When talking about legendary and top-class brands in the microphone manufacturing industry, for many of us, the name Oktava might not be among the first few to come to mind.
But the truth is that Oktava (founded as far back as 1927 in Tula, USSR) remains one of the most iconic and legendary microphone manufacturers in the world.
Throughout the years, Oktava has not only gained popularity (however esoteric this popularity might be) but has also become a world-famous brand with a highly respected name in the microphone manufacturing industry.
A fact you must know is that Yuri Gagarin , who is a Soviet astronaut; also the first human to journey into outer space, uttered his famous words “Let’s Go!” into an Oktava microphone.
Currently, Oktava products are popular everywhere around the world (including the United States and the United Kingdom). These iconic microphones are favoured by legendary musicians such as Sting , Iron Maiden , U2 , Marilyn Manson and Radiohead .
That being said, when talking about flexible, natural/clean-sounding and superbly crafted microphones that are also affordable, the Oktava MK-012 will always make it to that list. Unarguably, this remains one of the best microphones you will ever lay your hands on.
In audio recording and microphone application situations where nothing but ‘purity’ and precision is the utmost need, the Oktava MK-012 will work better than any other microphone you will possibly lay your hands on. This makes it an absolutely great choice for sampling.
The MK-012 is a compact, top-quality capacitor microphone with interchangeable capsules that will offer users the choice of cardioid, hypercardioid or omni-directional polar patterns. Its wide, flat-frequency response ensures that all sounds are captured with a high degree of accuracy.
In this article, we will review the amazing and widely talked about Oktava MK-012.

A Brief History of Oktava Microphones
As we said, it all started in 1927 in Tula, a city in Russia renowned for its skilled metalworkers. Oktava began its journey with the production of carbon-granule microphones and telephone equipment.
As the years passed, Oktava’s ambitions grew. The company aimed to create microphones that would capture pivotal moments in history.
A testament to their success is the already mentioned space travel by Yuri in 1960, using one of these microphones, was not a small step for the brand. Oktava’s reputation for quality and innovation continued to grow.
Oktava’s journey from a small factory in Tula to a globally recognized brand is proof of its commitment to quality and innovation. With products like the MK-012, it’s clear that Oktava continues to be a leader in the microphone manufacturing industry.

More information is also available on Oktava’s official website.
What is the frequency response of the Oktava MK-012?
If we take a look at the manual that comes with the microphone, we can see that the frequency range in which this microphone operates is between 20Hz to 20.000Hz, which is the human audible range.
So this is the range of frequencies it can capture. Now, every microphone (or every piece of audio gear), often doesn’t have a flat response to all frequencies, meaning that it captures some frequencies with higher intensity than others.
That being said, the frequency response of the Oktava is quite impressive and provides a great response across the whole spectrum, with a slight boost in 7k Hz (i.e. 7000 Hertz) in all of its setups, Omni, Cardioid and Hypercardioid.
In Cardioid and Hypercardioid, we find a boost also in the lower end, between 20 and 40 Hz, and then a slight shelf between 400 and 2k.

Oktava MK-012 Detailed Review
Capsules (patterns).
As we said before, you have three different setups for polar patterns (basically, how sensitive it is to the 360 degrees field from the capsule). Let’s explore each one.
Omnidirectional: This pattern picks up sound from all directions equally. It’s great for capturing a natural and realistic sound. It can be used to record room ambience or a group of instruments.
However, it may also pick up unwanted noise from the room. Also, it can be harder to control factors such as the natural reverb of the recording room.
Cardioid: The Cardioid pattern is more directional and picks up sound primarily from the front of the microphone. It is the most popular and most used pattern in general. It’s useful for isolating a specific sound source and reducing room noise.
It’s often used for vocals, as well as for miking individual instruments in a multi-instrument setup. It provides a natural and dry sound for an isolated sound source, but also, in my personal opinion, has the benefit of allowing the performer to be more relaxed and free in terms of movement.
This is because it will still capture if they move within the polar pattern’s reach. This can be useful when recording a violin, for example, or a flute, and the performer has the tendency to move around. The signal will be consistent regardless of that factor.
Hypercardioid: The Hypercardioid pattern is even more focused than the Cardioid pattern. It offers the highest level of sound source isolation and is ideal for situations where there’s a lot of background noise.
However, it also picks up some sound from directly behind the microphone and it can be a little bit more demanding in terms of positioning. Mostly recommended for video and film field recording.
Remember to check the graphics for each pattern’s frequency response above (even though as we said and will repeat, it’s pretty flat).
This is one of my favourite aspects of this microphone. Have you ever bought a product online that looked solid and sturdy, only to realize that it’s light and frail when you unbox it? This will not happen to you with the MK-012.
The MK-012 is built from a single metal piece, not plastic. The capsule changing will be uncomplicated too.
You simply screw the capsule you want to use, and you can place the -10dB pad between the capsule and the preamp if desired. It’s very easy to carry around in its wooden box which is light and small.
Sound Quality
The sound quality is outstanding, delivering a very pure signal and capturing the source with impressive transparency. Drum overheads are one of the most typical uses for this microphone. I recommend you try this mic with acoustic guitars , violin, grand piano or upright piano.
To be honest, almost any classical music instrument will make a wonderful team with this mic. It also makes a lot of sense to use it in human-speech situations too. A lot of YouTubers love recording their videos with it.
One of its most remarkable features is its transparency and its flat response, and one of the reasons it is like that is that it has a transformerless preamp.
This means it doesn’t use a transformer for tasks such as impedance matching, balancing the signal, and providing electrical isolation. Transformers are a great way to deal with these aspects, but they are also known to add some EQ to the signal.
They also add size, weight and cost to the product. It’s important to note that a transformerless solution, which incorporates components such as capacitors, transistors, and resistors, must be meticulously designed to effectively handle the task.
Achieving the desired performance and sound quality with this approach is a complex engineering challenge, but when done right, it can yield excellent results, as you can see with the MK-012.
What comes with the Oktava MK-012?
The MK-012 will usually come in a wooden box that fits easily in your hand. Inside the box, you’ll find the manual, the body (the pre-amp), one or three capsules (if you bought the 03 version), the pad and a holder.
Of course, this is if you buy it new. If you buy it used check two important things:
- That it comes with all the pieces you’re paying for
- That it is not the Chinese version (massive drop in quality)
- Overall state
Pros and Cons
Here, we will share some demos so you can hear the sound of the microphone.
Here’s a video of a pianist using different mics to record the same fragment, and you can find the Oktava recording on this link (it’s interesting to hear the other takes too, so we encourage you to do it)
Also, by the same channel, here’s a recording of an acoustic guitar:
Here is ‘ Ok Computer ,’ an album by the celebrated band Radiohead , that uses this microphone.
Oktava MK-012 Application
This microphone is extremely versatile. Here we’ll take a look at the most recommended and popular uses, exploring its application on drums as overheads , in sampling , vocal recording , and on acoustic instruments .
Each of these applications showcases the unique capabilities of this microphone, explaining why it has become a favourite among professionals in the recording industry.
Application on Drums as Overheads
The Oktava MK-012 is often used as an overhead microphone for drum kits. Its clear and balanced sound captures the overall picture of the drum kit, including the cymbals’ shimmer and the toms’ resonance.
When used as overheads, these microphones are typically placed a few feet above the drum kit, and slightly towards the front, to capture the full range of the drum sounds.
The MK-012 microphones are known for their ability to capture the high frequencies of the cymbals while still providing a good representation of the entire kit.
A famous scenario where the Oktava MK-012 was used as drum overheads is in the recording of Radiohead’s “In Rainbows” album, where the detailed and natural sound of the drums is a testament to the capabilities of these microphones.
Application in Sampling
The Oktava MK-012 is also a popular choice for sampling. Its accurate frequency response and ability to handle high sound pressure levels make it ideal for capturing a variety of sounds for use in digital music production.
Whether you’re sampling percussive sounds, ambient room tones, or the intricate details of a musical instrument, the MK-012 can capture it with clarity and precision.
Application in Vocal Recording
When it comes to vocal recording, the Oktava MK-012 shines in its ability to capture the nuances and details of the human voice.
Whether used in a close-mic setup for a pop vocal or a bit further away for a more ambient, roomy vocal sound, the MK-012 delivers a clear and detailed sound.
Its smooth high-frequency response helps to capture the breathiness and airiness of vocal performances, while its solid mid-range captures the body and depth of the voice.
Application on Acoustic Instruments
The Oktava MK-012 is a favourite for recording acoustic instruments, such as guitars, violins, and pianos. Its small size allows it to be placed close to the instrument, capturing the intricate details and resonances that larger microphones might miss.
The interchangeable capsules also allow for different pickup patterns, enabling the recording engineer to choose the best one for the specific instrument and room acoustics.
Spoken Word/Videos
Some YouTubers have the MK-012 on the top of their list, because it is very comfortable and small, in contrast to some heavier and bulky models.
Also, it gives YouTubers some advantages such as elegance aesthetics-wise and easier placement on the ‘shot’ (without taking too much visual space) and portability.
Application in Classical or Jazz Ensembles
The MK-012, particularly with its omnidirectional capsule, is often used for spaced-omni recording of classical or jazz ensembles. It’s prized for its natural sound, capturing the intricate details and nuances of these types of performances.
The omnidirectional pattern allows for a more ambient capture of the ensemble, providing a sense of the room and the ensemble’s placement within it.
Application in Live Sound Reinforcement
While it might seem counter-intuitive given its studio reputation, the MK-012 can frequently be used in live sound reinforcement applications, particularly on acoustic guitar.
Its ability to accurately capture the sound of the instrument and reject unwanted noise makes it a valuable tool in a live setting.
Application with Large-Diaphragm Capsules
The MK-012 body is compatible with a variety of capsules, including medium and large-diaphragm capsules (you can usually buy these separately).
This allows the microphone to be used in applications typically reserved for large-diaphragm microphones, such as vocal performances that require a more intimate, warm sound.
Application in Project Studios
Given its low cost relative to its performance, the MK-012 is a popular choice for project studios. It can handle vocals and all kinds of acoustic instruments, functioning as a top-class sampling mic.
Its versatility allows for usage according to the specific requirements of the project, making it a valuable addition to any studio setup, even for recording engineers starting out.
Does the Oktava MK-012 Need Phantom Power?
Like every condenser microphone, the ML-012 needs phantom power to work. Phantom power essentially refers to the 48 Volt DC power that is supplied through the microphone cable.
It’s called “phantom” because it doesn’t interfere with the audio signal that is also carried on the same cable. This power is used to polarize the microphone’s transducer, which is necessary for it to function. In short, yes, the Oktava MK-012 does require phantom power.
We have reviewed the applications, the features, the components and the quality of a great microphone within the reach of almost all budgets.
The Oktava MK-012 is an example of what excellence means in audio engineering, not only in build, durability, and comfort of use but also in performance and end result.
This doesn’t mean it is the perfect microphone for each and all recording situations, but it does mean that it’s an outstanding option to choose from, especially when the diversity of recording situations you might be in is considerable.
From drum overheads and classical music ensembles to Youbue videos and podcasts, this microphone is definitely an exceptional choice that keeps gaining popularity across the music production space.

Vodka Museum Tour with transport (excursion only)
Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.
Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.

Moscow is Russia’s largest city with a population of between 12 and 13 million. It is also Europe’s largest city and when you visit Moscow, you can feel it. The layout and architecture of the city is eclectic, ranging from crooked, ancient streets and alleyways to wide, bustling boulevards, from medieval churches to Stalin skyscrapers and to modern, glass buildings towering over everything and of course in the center of it all is the Kremlin and the magnificent Red Square. Moscow is also home to a fantastic, efficient and very beautiful metro system – each station having its own special design. Moscow Tours centering on Russian History
Moscow has a long and interesting history and has been the capital of Russia in many of its different iterations – capital of the Grand Duchy of Moscow , the Russian Empire and of course the Soviet Union (who could ever forget the Soviet Union?). Moscow, was founded in the 12th century by Prince Yuri Dolgaruki (Yuri of the long arms – he really did have long arms!). From that time on, it was home to the Russian Tsars until Peter the Great moved the capital to St. Petersburg in 1703. The city has survived invasions and sieges from the Mongols, the Tartars, the Poles, Lithuanians and Napoleon but has always persevered. Our Moscow tours will enlighten you on this great history and give you insights into Muscovites and their unique culture. Our Moscow tours show you what the city is like today but also brings to life the past. Moscow never seems to sleep and is bursting with energy. A Moscow tour with Express to Russia is truly the best way of getting to know Russia’s largest and most vibrant city.
Frequently Asked Questions From Our Travelers
What is the best time to visit moscow.
Any time of year is fine depending on what you plan to do. Summertime is pleasantly warm, ideal for exploring the city and its vibrant atmosphere, but Moscow will be much busier and accommodation is more expensive. Winter can be quite cold but beautiful nonetheless, and this is unproblematic if you intend to spend most of your trip in museums and galleries. There are also various festivals and events organised throughout the year. For more information about the best time to visit, read our guide
How many days are enough in Moscow?
If you plan your itinerary strategically and aren’t averse to a packed schedule, you can cover Moscow’s main sights over a long weekend. Most popular attractions are in the city centre, and the Moscow Metro allows you to cover much ground in a small amount of time. Ensure that your accommodation is fairly central and book tickets in advance, so that you can make the most of your days. For an informative and well-organised day out, check out our Moscow day tours with options to suit all interests.
Do they speak English in Moscow?
As Russia’s capital city, tourists are well accommodated in Moscow. There should be English-speaking staff in restaurants, bars, hotels, shops and attractions in tourist hotspots, and there are also English-speaking tourist police. Transport services have English translations on their maps and English announcements via intercom; alternatively, order taxis from the Yandex Taxi app (Russian Uber), though it’s unlikely that your taxi driver will speak English. If you get stuck and cannot communicate, it’s fine to use Google Translate.
Is it safe to travel to Moscow?
It is no less safe to travel to Moscow than to any European city if you exercise common sense and look after your belongings. As with every city some regions can be more unsavoury than others, but no tourist attractions are located there. The traffic in Moscow is notorious, so exercise caution when crossing roads. Do not take unlicensed taxis; book in advance or take public transport, which is widespread and perfectly safe. If you encounter any problems, look for the special tourist police who can help you. How to spend a perfect weekend in Moscow
Feb 11, 2020 • 5 min read
Moscow enjoyed the status of capital for most of Russia’s history, except for a relatively brief period (about two hundred years), when the Tsar and the government relocated to St Petersburg . But the Bolsheviks moved the capital back to Moscow in 1918, and today it’s an extremely diverse city. It can easily take a couple of weeks to see all of its sights, but if you've only got a weekend to explore, here's how to have two perfect days in Moscow.
Start your weekend in Moscow by acquainting yourself with top-notch Russian cuisine at Grand Cafe Dr Zhivago . Located on the first floor of the historical hotel National and overlooking the Kremlin, it’s definitely one of the best breakfast spots in the city. Try millet porridge with crawfish, pearl barley porridge with oxtail or traditional cottage cheese with raisins and candied fruit.
Set aside at least half a day for Russian capital’s major attractions: the Red Square and the Kremlin . To reach the Kremlin, cross the street from Dr Zhivago and walk through the Alexander Garden to the main entrance at the Kutafya Tower . Check out all the cathedrals, including Archangel cathedral with all the tsars’ tombs and Uspensky cathedral with medieval icons. Pause to look at the famous Tsar Bell and climb Ivan the Great Bell Tower to enjoy some great views.
Exit and walk to the Red Square through the Alexander Garden, where, if lucky, you can see the change of guard. If you’re feeling hungry, stop by the food court at Okhotny Ryad shopping complex to pick up a snack.
The Red square is dominated by four buildings of equal historical importance: the Kremlin's most famous Spasskaya (Saviour) Tower , with a clock and fourteen bells that chime national anthem four times a day (6am, noon, 6pm, midnight), St Basil's Cathedral , Moscow's best-known symbol with its multi-colored domes, Lenin’s Mausoleum , the resting place of the leader of the 1917 October revolution, and GUM , Moscow's oldest department store, topped with a glass roof, designed by one of Russia's most celebrated architects, Vladimir Shukhov.
A guide to shopping in Moscow
Right behind the St Basil’s it is the relatively new Zaryadye Park , designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro, famous for its work on the High Line in New York City. Zaryadye showcases flora from all the climate zones of Russia, which is the largest country in the world. The floating bridge at the edge of the park is one of the biggest selfie magnets in Moscow, providing spectacular views of the river and the city skyline as the background.
Another Zaryadye attraction is a glass pavilion that hosts restaurant Voskhod (Sunrise) – a perfect spot for your lunch or early dinner. Voskhod focuses on dishes from all fifteen former Soviet Union republics and its inside looks like a Soviet-made spaceship with great views of the Moscow river. Try Azeri home-made pasta or trout from Lake Sevan in Armenia.
After all that walking and exploring you need some quality downtime and what better way to spend it than relaxing for a couple of hours at the famous Sanduny traditional Russian hot bath. Make sure to get a massage with birch sticks!
You might still have time to go to Winzavod Center – a creative cluster with galleries housed at a former wine factory. Galleries like XL , pop/off/art and Ovcharenko always have something on, most likely a cutting-edge Russian contemporary art exhibition. Finish the evening hanging out at one of the best Moscow bars – try socialites’ paradise Noor Electro , co-joined with one of Moscow’s avant-garde theatres or Powerhouse Moscow , located in a 19th-century mansion, which is famous for live indie and jazz band performances. Both serve great food, too.
Power up for a busy day ahead at one of Moscow’s trendiest coffee/breakfast spots, Nude . Located in the upscale, well-heeled neighborhood of Patriarch’s Ponds, Nude offers a wide range of breakfast dishes, including scrambled eggs, toast, porridge and banana bread. Book ahead as it might be busy on a weekend morning.
After checking out the Patriarch's Ponds, which features prominently in Mikhail Bulgakov’s perennial novel The Master and Margarita , devote the rest of the morning and early afternoon to exploring Moscow’s best museums. Depending on your tastes, pick one of the following: Tretyakov Gallery for traditional Russian art, from medieval icons to the early 20th century; New Tretyakov for 20th century and contemporary art as well as great temporary exhibitions; Pushkin Museum for one of the greatest collections of Impressionist and post-Impressionist art in the world; and the Garage Museum for some eye-opening modern-art exhibitions.
Whichever museum or gallery you choose, be sure to go to LavkaLavka for lunch, certainly one of the best places to try new Russian cuisine, which is a contemporary reading of centuries-old recipes. It’s one of the few places to try polugar , which is, allegedly, what Russians called vodka in the 19th century.
When you talk about Russian culture, literary giants usually pop into mind: the likes of Leo Tolstoy, Fyodor Dostoevsky and Anton Chekhov. There are plenty of literary museums in Moscow, but if you had to pick one, visit Tolstoy Estate Museum , located just opposite the headquarters of Yandex, the Russian equivalent of Google. Every little detail has been restored just the way it looked when Tolstoy lived here in the 1880s–90s.
Leave some time for exploring the Moscow Metro : every station is an architectural masterpiece in its own right. Our favorites include Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya and Kievskaya. Later, unwind at one of dozens of Moscow’s craft beer places . Try Jawsspot , named after one of the leading breweries in Russia, Jaws from the Urals region, which also serves decent pizza and salads.

19 Unique And Fabulous Experiences In Moscow
- Destinations
Thinking of visiting Russia? When visiting such a famous city, one must, of course, visit the iconic landmarks first. Moscow has plenty of those, most of them in the center of the city, which is very well-planned for tourists. Once you’ve seen the sights that are on most travelers’ lists, it’s time to branch out and visit some of the lesser-known sites, and there are some fascinating places to see and things to do.
I know this list is long, but I just couldn’t help myself. You probably won’t have the time to see them all. But that’s okay. Just scroll through the list and choose what sounds the most interesting to you. Where possible, make sure to book in advance, as things can get crowded, especially during high season.
1. The Red Square, Kremlin, And Surroundings
Red Square (Krasnya Ploshad) is the heart and soul of Russia, and where much of the country’s history has unfolded. This is the most famous landmark in Moscow and indeed the whole country, it’s an absolute must-do! The square is always full of people and has a rather festive atmosphere!
Saint Basil’s Cathedral
This is the famous church with the rainbow-colored, onion-domed roof. The cathedral was commissioned in the 1500s by Ivan the Terrible and according to legend, the Tsar thought it was so beautiful, that he ordered that the architect’s eyes be cut out afterward, so he could never build anything more beautiful! He wasn’t called Ivan the Terrible for no reason!
Lenin’s Mausoleum
The “love-it-or-hate-it” of tourist attractions in Russia. A glass sarcophagus containing the embalmed body of Russian revolutionary, Vladimir Lenin. It may seem a bit bizarre to display the mummy of a person, but it has been there for almost half a century and the 2.5 million visitors who come each year, clearly feel the queuing and thorough body search are worth it, to be in Lenin’s presence.
Pro Tip: no photos and no loud talking are allowed inside the Mausoleum.
Eternal Flame
There is an Eternal Flame in honor of an unknown soldier on the left side of Red Square. The hourly changing of the guards is worth seeing.
The Kremlin is the official residence of the Russian president. You can see it from the outside, or you can take an excursion to one of the museums located inside. This is the biggest active fortress in Europe, and holds a week’s worth of attractions! Once behind the 7,332-feet of walls, there are five squares, four cathedrals, 20 towers, various museums, and the world’s largest bell and cannon to see. Worth a special mention is the Armory Chamber that houses a collection of the famous Faberge Eggs.
Pro Tip: You can only go inside the Kremlin if you are part of a tourist group.
2. Bolshoi Theatre
Bolshoi Theatre translates to “The Big Theatre” in Russian, and the building is home to both the Bolshoi Ballet and Bolshoi Opera — among the oldest and most famous ballet and opera companies in the world.
Pro Tip: It’s hard to get an inexpensive ticket, so if you’re reading well in advance of going to Moscow then try buying tickets on the official website . Last-minute tickets cost around $250 per person. If this is out of your budget, about an hour before a performance, you can try buying a ticket at the entrance from a reseller. Most can speak enough English to negotiate the price.
Tour the Bolshoi Theatre: You can take a group guided tour of the Bolshoi Theatre which focuses on the history and architecture of the theatre and behind the scenes. There’s an English language tour that lasts 2 hours and costs around $300 for a group of up to six.
3. Luxury Shopping At GUM And TSUM
Russia’s main department store, GUM, has a stunning interior that is home to over 100 high-end boutiques, selling a variety of brands: from luxurious Dior to the more affordable Zara. Even if shopping is not on your Moscow to-do list GUM is still worth a visit; the glass-roofed arcade faces Red Square and offers a variety of classy eateries. TSUM, one of the biggest luxury malls in town, is right behind the Bolshoi and GUM. It’s an imposing building with lots of history, and worth a visit just for its design and its glass roof.
4. Christ The Savior Cathedral
This is one of Russia’s most visited cathedrals and is a newer addition to the gorgeous array of Muscovite cathedrals, but don’t let its young age fool you. After perestroika, in the early 90s, the revived Russian Orthodox Church was given permission to build a cathedral on this site. It did the location honors and built the largest temple of the Christian Orthodox Church. The façade is as grand as you’d expect, but it’s the inside that will mesmerize you, with its domes, gold, gorgeous paintings, and decor!
The cathedral is located just a few hundred feet away from the Kremlin and was the site of the infamous Pussy Riot protest against Putin back in 2012.
Pro Tip: Bring a shawl to cover your hair as is the local custom.
5. Gorky Park
Moscow’s premier green space, Gorky Park (Park Gor’kogo) is the city’s biggest and most famous park. There is entertainment on offer here for every taste, from outdoor dancing sessions to yoga classes, volleyball, ping-pong, rollerblading, and bike and boat rental in summer. In winter, half the park turns into a huge ice skating rink. Gorky Park is also home to an open-air movie theater and the Garage Museum of Contemporary Art. There is also Muzeon Art Park, a dynamic contemporary space with a unique collection of 700 sculptures. It is located right in front of Gorky Park.
6. Sparrow Hills Park
If you take a walk from Gorky Park, along the Moscow River embankment, you’ll end up in the city’s other legendary park, Sparrow Hills. Although the park doesn’t offer as many activities as its hip neighbor, it has a great panoramic view of the city
Pro Tip: You can take a free walking tour to all of the above attractions with an English-speaking guide.
7. River Cruising
One of the best ways to experience Moscow, and see all the famous landmarks, but from a different angle, is from the Moscow River. Take a river cruise. Avoid the tourist crowds. There are little nameless old boats that do the cruise, but if you are looking for a more luxurious experience take the Radisson Blu cruise and enjoy the sights with some good food and a glass of wine.
8. Metro Hopping
Inaugurated in the 1930s, the Moscow Metro system is one of the oldest and most beautiful in the world. Started in Stalinist times, each station is a work of art in its own right. I’d recommend touring the stations between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. This way, you’ll be able to properly see it without the crowds. Ideally, I’d recommend taking a tour with a knowledgeable guide with GuruWalk, who will tell you stories of forgotten stations and how the history of the country is interconnected with the metro development. If going by yourself, then I definitely recommend checking out: Mayakovskaya, Ploschad Revolutsii, Kievskaya, Kropotkinskaya, Kurskaya, and Novoslobodskaya stations.
Visit the free Moscow Metro Museum: For real train enthusiasts, located in the southern vestibule of Sportivnaya station is a small free museum. Here you can take a peek into the driver’s cabin, see a collection of metro tokens from different cities, and see different models of a turnstile, traffic lights, escalator, and more.
9. Moscow State University View
In his effort to create a grander Moscow, Stalin had seven skyscrapers built in different parts of town; they’re called the Seven Sisters. The largest of these buildings and the one with the best view is the main building of the Moscow State University. Although this is a little outside the city center, the view is more than worth it.
10. Izmailovsky Market
Mostly known for the city’s largest flea market, the district of Izmaylovo is home to a maze of shops where you can get just about anything, from artisan crafts to traditional fur hats, handcrafted jewelry, fascinating Soviet memorabilia, and antiquities. It’s also one of Moscow’s largest green spaces. There are often no price tags, so be prepared to haggle a bit. Head to one of the market cafes for a warming mulled wine before continuing your shopping spree.
The History of Vodka Museum is found here, and the museum’s restaurant is the perfect place to sample various brands of the national drink.
Once you’ve covered the more touristy spots, Moscow still has plenty to offer, and the places below will also be full of locals! So for some local vibes, I would strongly recommend the spots below!
11. Moscow City
With a completely different vibe, Moscow City (also referred to as Moscow International Business Center) is like a mini Dubai, with lots of impressive tall glass buildings. Here is where you’ll find the best rooftops in towns, like Ruski Restaurant, the highest restaurant both in Moscow City and in Europe. Moscow City is great for crowd-free shopping and the best panoramic views of the city.
12. Tretyakov Gallery
Tretyakov Gallery started as the private collection of the Tretyakov brothers, who were 19th-century philanthropists. They gave their private collection to the government after their deaths. If there is just one museum you visit in Moscow, I recommend this one!
13. Tsaritsyno Museum-Reserve
Tsaritsyno was a residence of Catherine the Great more than two centuries ago. It became derelict during the Soviet era but has now been fully renovated. With its opulently decorated buildings, gardens, meadows, and forests, Tsaritsyno Park is the perfect place for a green respite in Moscow.
14. Kolomenskoye
A 10-minute metro ride from the city center is Kolomenskoe Museum-Reserve, where you can get an idea of what Russia looked like 200 years ago. You’ll find ancient churches (one dating back to the 16th century), the oldest garden in Moscow, and the wonderful fairytale wooden palace of Tsar Alexey Mikhailovich, father of Peter the Great.
15. Ostankino TV Tower
Built in 1967, Ostankino TV Tower was the tallest free-standing construction in the world at the time, it’s still the 8th tallest building in the world and the highest in Europe. It’s also the best observation deck, with a glass floor and 360-degree views. The speedy elevators take you 1,105 feet in next to no time.
Pro Tip: You need to book in advance; entrance is based on specific ticket times and the capacity is limited and only a certain number of tourists are allowed per day. Don’t forget your passport, you’ll need it to get through security.
16. Zaryadye Park
Zaryadye is a newly opened, landscaped urban park so new you won’t find it in a lot of tour guides. The park is near Red Square and is divided into four climatic zones: forest, steppe, tundra, and floodplains, depicting the variety of climatic zones in Russia.
These last three suggestions are a little quirky, but all are really worth checking out.
17. Museum Of Soviet Arcade Games
Release your inner child playing on 66 arcade machines from the Soviet era! What a great way to spend a couple of hours when tired of visiting museums and palaces. The staff speaks excellent English and are happy to explain how the games work.
18. Moscow Rooftop Tour
Take a 1-hour private Moscow rooftop tour with an experienced roofer. I can just about guarantee none of your friends will be able to say they’ve done it! For your comfort, I recommend wearing comfortable shoes. Take your camera, there are some amazing photo opportunities out there!
19. Sanduny Banya
This classical Russian bathhouse opened its doors in 1808 and is famous for combining traditional Russian banya services with luxurious interiors and service. If you enjoy spas and saunas, then you should experience a Russian bathhouse at least once in your life! Go with an open mind and hire a specialist to steam you as it’s meant to be done — by being beaten repeatedly with a besom (a leafy branch)! This is said to improve circulation, but is best done by a professional!
So there you have my list of things to do in Moscow. I could have gone on and on and on, but I didn’t want to try your patience! There are so many things to do in this vibrant city that you’ll definitely need to allocate several days for exploring.

Oktava mk012.
- Microphones / Miking
Oktava have created a storm in the microphone marketplace with the MK219. Now they hope to follow up their initial success with the MK012, designed for both studio and broadcast use.
Oktava's MK219 (reviewed SOS April '94) has caused quite a stir in the microphone world. It delivers a tonal performance to challenge mics which its own list price wouldn't even pay the VAT on, despite a standard of cosmetic finish that would make a Trabant engine casting look like a work of art. In that respect, Oktava's MK012 microphone couldn't be more different, being well‑engineered and very conservatively styled. As tends to be the case with ex‑eastern bloc microphones, the technology is largely 'borrowed' from the major mic manufacturers, but implemented in a slightly less refined manner.
The basic package comprises the mic body plus a stand clip, a 10dB pad and three individual capsules providing cardioid, hypercardioid and omnidirectional pickup patterns. A figure‑of‑eight capsule might have been more useful than two cardioid types — the importers tell me they're already looking into the possibility.
The capsules screw directly to the microphone body, where the thread‑to‑thread contact forms the negative signal conductor, and a central pin in the capsule mates with a sprung contact in the microphone body to carry the positive signal. If the 10dB pad is needed, it fits between the mic body and the capsule. Low noise, transformerless preamplifier circuitry is housed in the mic body, and can be driven from any nominal 48V phantom powering source. Unlike vocal mics, where the response is often deliberately coloured, the 012 has a nominally flat frequency response extending from 20Hz‑20kHz — though that's not to say that it isn't also a good vocal mic.
I heard this mic as part of a comparative test undertaken at the Gateway School of Recording in Kingston, where they have a grand piano set up in the middle of a large studio. Several mics were set up on boom stands about four feet away from the open piano lid, and positioned as closely together as was practical. We then repaired to the control room and scrutinised the various mics while someone played the piano. Though every mic produced a slightly different sound, the 012 stood up surprisingly well, delivering a clean, open sound with plenty of depth. Further studio tests revealed that the mic also works well with acoustic guitars and, indeed, it should suit any application requiring an honest, natural result. As you might expect, there's a reasonable degree of consistency between the sounds produced by the three available capsules. Two of these mics would make a versatile and affordable stereo recording kit, though M&S recording is not possible, because there's no figure‑of‑eight capsule.
Because this mic doesn't produce a coloured response, it would be fine for classical and choral work, as well as for recording smaller ensembles (for example, folk, chamber, or ethnic music). Its small size also makes this mic suitable for broadcast, sound‑for‑picture, installation, and theatre situations.
Given the low cost, the MK012 is a surprisingly competent and flexible microphone, suited to virtually any application where an accurate sound is sought. In the project studio, it can handle vocals and all manner of acoustic instruments, and should also function as a top class sampling mic. A stereo pair would make great drum overheads or location recording mics, and their relatively high sensitivity means they could also be used for gathering sound effects on location, without noise posing too much of a problem.
There are plenty of professional mics already available which do essentially the same job as the MK012, but none at anything like the price. Traditionally, project studios go for large diaphragm capacitor vocal mics, but given its very attractive price, the MK012 makes a welcome and useful addition to the mic locker. The MK012 is optionally available with an elastic suspension cage, a phantom power supply, foam windshield and cable, all in a wooden case. Given that this costs only £50 or so more than the basic package, it adds further value to what is already a bargain.
Brief Specification
- Frequency Response: 20Hz‑20kHz (The useful response extends well above this)
- Sensitivity: 10 mV/Pa
- Power: Phantom power (48V nominal)
- Output Impedance: 300 ohms nominal
- Standard Accessories: Plastic case with mic body, hypercardioid, cardioid and omni capsules plus mounting clip
- Good Performance.
- Versatility.
- No figure‑of‑eight capsule.
A great all‑round capacitor mic at a real knock‑down price. Two sets would form the heart of a really nice stereo rig.
Information
Oktava MK012 £352.50; box set including extra accessories £411.25. Prices include VAT.

A fact you must know is that Yuri Gagarin, who is a Soviet astronaut; also the first human to journey into outer space, uttered his famous words "Let's Go!" into an Oktava microphone. Currently, Oktava products are popular everywhere around the world (including the United States and the United Kingdom).

Nowadays, an Oktava continues to be a welcome (if not slightly peculiar) sight to see in a mic locker, with models like the MK-319 and MK-52 being the mic of choice for several big name engineers when working with guitar cabs and acoustic instruments. Meanwhile, MK-101s and MK-2500s are considered as quality all-rounders to suit an assortment ...
