SUN, SPICE AND SEA BREEZES
It's no coincidence that many of the best European cruises call in the most beautiful ports in the world. Eat your way through the cobbled streets of Italy, contrast the timeless beauty of Greece's ruins with the modern chic that's come to define its islands or hike through forlorn caverns and up lush waterfalls in captivating Croatia.
DISCOVER LA DOLCE VITA
From the storied streets of Rome to the charming canals of Venice, Italy is a country that needs no introduction. Whether you pose with Michelangelo's David in Florence or indulge in to-die-for Pizza in Naples, it's no wonder why so many cruises to Europe visit la bella Italia.
FROM THE ACROPOLIS TO THE AEGEAN
Greece is remarkable, from the ancient Acropolis of Athens to the blue-roofed houses of Santorini. Whether you trek through the limestone hills in the north or swim through the cobalt waters around the Cyclades, it's easy to see why this is one of the best places to visit in Europe.
"GAMES OF THRONES" Lives On
The hit TV show might be finished, but "Game of Thrones" fans will recognize dozens of locations in the walled city of Dubrovnik , the jewel of Croatia's Adriatic coast. Farther afield, explore the countless waterfalls of Plitvice Lakes National Park or pair European cruises with tastings at underrated wineries.
SCENES THAT INSPIRED 1,000 PAINTINGS
Endless possibilities are what the coasts of France, Spain and Portugal have always been about. Generations of painting greats from Van Gogh to Picasso have found inspiration from the crystalline coasts of the French Riviera, to the craggy mountaintops of the Canary Islands. Of course, the best European cruises also dock in timeless cities like Barcelona, Cherbourg, Lisbon and beyond.
CITY OF LOVE, CÔTE D'AZUR
The only thing better than strolling into Paris as the Eiffel Tower lights up at night? Sitting down for a meal of fresh-caught seafood as the sun sets into the harbor of aptly-named Nice. France has got something for every traveler, which is why so many cruises to Europe dock here.
SAY "SALUD" TO SPAIN
Sitting down for Spanish tapas is one of the most satisfying food experiences in the world, especially when you wash it down with fruity sangria. Plus, the Jurassic topography of the Canary Islands and the storied streets of Barcelona are just a few of the best places to visit in Europe you'll find here.
KING OF DISCOVERY
Portugal is where many of the first expeditions to the New World start, but most people on European cruises bound for Lisbon wonder why anyone would leave. Explore the mysterious Quinta de Regaleira castle in Sintra, pour port wine in Porto or practice your surfing skills in the Algarve.

OLD-WORLD WARMTH ALONG BREEZY COAST
You can feel warmth in your heart no matter the temperature outside, and the northwestern reaches of Europe illustrate this beautifully. Join the best European cruises through the British Isles and along the coast of the Netherlands, where enchanted country charm and royal, old-world cities offer endless possibilities for memories that will last a lifetime.
THE JOY OF GOING DUTCH
The Dutch have managed to keep the sea at bay for hundreds of years, but many of the best European cruises still make their way into Amsterdam . If you tire of the tranquility you find amid tulip fields and beneath towering windmills, make your way to the hipster capital of Rotterdam.
ETERNAL LANDSCAPES ON THE EMERALd ISLE
Life is but a dream in Ireland , whether you down a pint of Guinness and trace tales told by James Joyce in Dublin, or careen along the Cliffs of Moher along the west coast. Many cruises to Europe also stop in Northern Ireland's Belfast, a city that's a testament to rebirth and reconciliation.
STEP INTO A SCOTTISH FAIRYTALE
When you visit Scotland, it can be difficult to discern legend from real life. Strolling down Edinburgh's Royal Mile to Edinburgh Castle might feel like a dream, while the fabled and mythical Loch Ness may surprise you with its charm and stunning scenery. Scotland's one of the best places to visit in Europe, period.
WINTER AURORA, SUMMER SUN
Scandinavia is dark for much of the year, but light is what defines its polar nations, from the Midnight Sun that rises high above Demark in mid-summer, to the aurora that dances above Norway and Iceland amid winter's deepest freeze. Find endless possibilities and the best European cruises along the Baltic, from the savory seafood eateries of Oslo, to the cold cityscape of Reykjavik.
SCANDINAVIA'S UNSUNG SISTER
Many of the best European cruises dock in Denmark, and it's no wonder why. From colorful Nyhavn harbor in Copenhagen to storied castles like Amalienborg and Frederiksborg, Denmark more than makes up for the fact that its more famous neighbors often eclipse it.
LAND OF FIRE AND ICE
It's easy to be intrigued by Iceland , whether you walk through Reykjavik's riveting Hallgrimskirkja church, or watch the northern lights dance over Kirkjufellsfoss waterfalls. Plus, there are few better ways to cap off cruises to Europe than a dip in the aptly-named Blue Lagoon.
PRICELESS PANORAMAS, FABULOUS FJORDs
Norway is a country in beautiful balance. Had enough of the orderliness of Oslo? Head west to beautiful Bergen, where finger-shaped fjords jut into and out of thousands of miles of coastline. Or contrast a fresh fish dinner at sea level with the view from towering Trolltunga cliff.
Europe is beautiful in every season, but the peak of comfortable weather (especially in the north) is between May and September.
You should always be prepared for rain and colder weather when you travel to Europe, especially in the North. Dress in light layers for your vacation.
Europeans speak more English the farther north you go. Your phone's translation app (or, at minimum, learning how to say "Hello" and "Thank You" in local languages) will aid you along the Mediterranean.
RELATED PORTS
Learn more about Baltic ports like Klaipeda, Lithuania and Tallinn, Estonia, or read up on Bergen, the gateway to Norway's stunning fjords. The Mediterranean provides many options but start by exploring Malaga on Spain's Costa del Sol or the exciting Monte Carlo, Monaco. The most popular ports in the British Isles are Edinburgh in Scotland and the cities of Belfast and Dublin in Ireland. No matter what you like, you will find your favourite European cruise.

Our Favorite Destinations for Winter Cruises This Year
By Zachary Laks
Swapping blizzards for trade winds, winter cruises can be the tonic to your seasonal downswing. Not unlike birds, cruise ships head south for the winter, chasing the sun, sand, and appeal of tropical paradise. Though with an increase in expedition travel, shifting routes are leveraging the winter months as prime time for glacial destinations, from the northern lights to Antarctica. If you’re going to travel to the ends of the earth, 2019 was the year ships stepped up to take you there in luxury and style. This past year alone saw 10 new expedition builds hit the seas, including the ultra luxury flair of Scenic Eclipse , complete with two helicopters and a seven-person submarine, and Hurtigruten's Roald Amundsen , the industry's first hybrid ship powered by LNG and electric battery. Whether the destination is a remote island or an iceberg, these winter cruises are your best bet for the season.
The Caribbean
From Boston to Miami , ports swell throughout the winter months with ships headed south to the Caribbean. This season’s mega-ships joining the fray include Royal Caribbean’s Symphony of the Seas , the world’s largest cruise ship; Norwegian’s newest and largest ship, Norwegian Encore , and the design-forward Celebrity Edge . Narrowly avoiding extensive damage from Hurricane Dorian , the cruise-favorite ports of The Bahamas are all back and operating at full capacity. As for determining what Caribbean itinerary is best for you, the cruise line and ship should take top priority. There’s not too much variation in beach quality at destinations along the eastern and western Caribbean routes, and nearly all islands offer comparable thrills such as zip-lining, scuba diving, and liquor tastings.
Private cruise line island stops help distinguish Caribbean itineraries, where well-kept beaches are steps from the ship and the shore-side BBQ lunches are included. New this year, Royal Caribbean’s Perfect Day CocoCay enhances the private island experience. The Bahamas-based outpost features an expansive water park featuring North America’s tallest water slide, a helium balloon that takes adventurers 450 feet high, and floating cabanas available to rent for the day.
For smaller ships, Viking has three of its sister ships traversing the Caribbean this winter , sailing seven to 21 nights from Miami, San Juan, and New York. Silversea continues its annual Caribbean winter itineraries spanning five to 24 days, with highlights that include swimming with the pigs of Exuma Island, a day in the remote Mayreau Island with a population of 200, and the remarkable 365 beaches at Falmouth, Antigua, and Barbuda.
Topping the bucket list as the final frontier for the world’s most avid travelers, Antarctica has never been more accessible, as a surge in expedition cruising has chartered new ways south. Only a select few vessels in the world are outfitted with ice-strengthened hulls strong enough to forge through the waters and iceberg-flanked passageways of the sprawling continent. The range in cruises spans small, expedition-focused ships that can accommodate 50-100 passengers to larger, 200-passenger five-star vessels. Voyages originate predominantly from Argentina’s Buenos Aires and Ushuaia before crossing the choppy seas of the Drake Passage, where whales can often be spotted frolicking in a ship’s wake. Temperatures on the Antarctic Peninsula (where most cruise ships frequent) are warmest December through February, with averages in the 30s. Nearly 24 hours of daylight makes up for the climate, with endless hours of sightseeing and sporadic excursions from the ship by way of guided Zodiac boats and kayaks.
On trend is the new fly-cruise experience, optimizing your time cruising the Antarctic coast by flying over the trying swells of the Drake Passage, normally a two-day trip by sea completed in two hours by plane. Having launched just last month, Antarctica21's Magellan Explorer is the region’s newest ship purpose-built for the operation of Antarctic fly and cruise expeditions. If you prefer your white ice caps with white glove service, Silversea’s newly announced Antarctica Bridge will be the first to bring an ultra-luxury touch to the fly-cruise experience. An all-business class private charter jet will transport passengers from Punta Arenas, Chile to the Silver Explorer , ready to cruise through the remote paradise (slated for its first expedition December 2021).
Southeast Asia
Ocean and river cruises continue to expand their routes throughout Southeast Asia, with ports in Malaysia, Indonesia, and Singapore showing significant growth in cruise traffic this past year. Avoiding the heat of the summer, most cruise lines focus their itineraries on the region in the fall and winter months. Singapore is a major hub for ocean liners as well as a popular stopover for smaller ships passing through. The island city-state is a seasonal home to Royal Caribbean’s Quantum of the Seas from October through April, sailing mostly four- to five-day trips north to Malaysia and Thailand; Princess Cruises’ Sapphire Princess from December through February sailing a wide variety of Southeast Asia itineraries; and Costa Cruises’ Costa Fortuna , which does primarily week-long tours of Malaysia and Thailand.
River cruises are most predominantly found on the Mekong in Vietnam and Myanmar’s Irrawaddy river . Viking Mekong has a seven-day Mekong river tour that shifts from a northbound to southbound river expedition weekly, with the most temperate weather found in the low 70s from December through March. December and January are best for Myanmar’s river cruises as it’s one of the sunniest and driest times of the year, with temperatures along the river banks averaging from 75 degrees in Mandalay to 80 degrees in Bagan. Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours’ year-round Bagan and Mandalay river cruise on the Scenic Aura adds the comforts of luxury as you explore one of the world’s most remote destinations.
The most popular port in Australia is the coveted Sydney Harbour, home to the iconic Sydney Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge. January and February are the warmest months to head down under, averaging temperate 72-degree days with an average of nine hours of sunshine. Royal Caribbean has invested heavily in the market, steering four ships with more than 80 sailings throughout their 20/21 season. Ovation of the Seas returns for its fifth winter homeport in Sydney with two- to 19-night itineraries that include the South Pacific. Opting for a more intimate and luxurious cruise of the Tasman Sea, Seabourn Encore ferries passengers one way between Sydney and Auckland on a 14- to 16-day New Zealand & Australia itinerary from December through March. (One warning: Come prepared with layers and rain gear, as it’s not uncommon to experience a swell of weather patterns in a matter of hours.)

As elusive as they can be magical, the Northern Lights are the primary drive for opting to coast along the frigid waters of Norway in the winter months. Drastically dropping below zero as you near the Arctic Circle, temperatures will rarely peak above 20 degrees. Add in an average of five to six hours of daylight (or even less in the Arctic Circle as polar nights bring days without the sun). But the discomfort is tamed by the majesty of a Northern Lights sighting. Among the most dependable guides to the region, Hurtigruten’s Norwegian-owned and operated history with the coast dates to 1893. Predominantly known as a ferry line that shuttles locals, Hurtigruten welcomes expedition travelers on no-frills Northern Lights tours. The 12-day sailings run October through February. With their experience and northernmost-reaching itineraries, they’re so confident you’ll glimpse the Northern Lights during this time that if you don’t, they offer compensation by way of a six- or seven-day cruise free of charge. Of the larger lines, British-based P&O Cruises offers only one to two itineraries each year in search of the phenomenon, while Royal Caribbean offers a single itinerary that reaches the Arctic Circle this year on Jewel of the Seas . Select smaller lines that traverse the Arctic Circle with a little more regularity during the wintery months include Cruise & Maritime Voyages, Saga Cruises and Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines.
Regulations prohibit foreign-flagged ships (a.k.a. nearly all major cruise lines) to sail a U.S.-based itinerary without stopping at one foreign port. Cruise lines have skirted around this issue by creating Hawaiian voyages that originate in Vancouver , make a pit stop in Ensenada, Mexico on the way to Honolulu , or make Hawaii a destination on a transpacific crossing. Hawaii’s winter temperatures average in the high 70s and cruises that sail the island waters January through March are timed for a chance encounter with humpback whales . Norwegian Cruise Line currently operates seven- to 14-day itineraries roving the Hawaiian islands and making its way to the South Pacific in the spring. Go for the seven-night “greatest hits” cruise that hits up ports including Maui, Kona, and Kauai. If you’re looking to sail from the mainland, Princess Cruises’ Star Princess and Grand Princess feature round-trip 15-day itineraries to Hawaii from Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Vancouver .
Galápagos Islands
Cruises are the most practical and immersive way to experience the natural wonder of this archipelago of volcanic islands, which straddles the equator in the Pacific Ocean. Smaller, intimate ships sail uniform routes approved by Galápagos National Park . December through March marks the high season on the islands, as the temperatures average in the upper 70s and low 80s, and endemic species enter into breeding and nesting season. Choosing a Galápagos cruise comes down to what kind of adventure you want, and what standard of luxury you’re seeking. Sailing its inaugural winter season, Celebrity Flora has arrived in the islands as one of the most high-tech and luxurious ships to navigate the islands in years. The 100 passenger ship is sailing 10- to 16-night itineraries. Silversea’s Silver Galápagos seven-day trek continues its all-inclusive sailings as capacity demands lead to the line’s expansion with Silver Origin , set to debut summer 2020. For a more intimate and eco-conscious expedition , Ecoventura sails luxury yachts with capacity for only 20 passengers on 7-night itineraries.
Prioritizing the romanticism of strolling Piazza San Marco in Venice with room to breathe over a beach is a real consideration—especially as European cruise ports continue to manage overcrowding issues in the high season. Cruising Europe in the winter months adds a convenience factor that’s hard to find any other time of the year, as restaurants welcome you in off the street, winding lines for top museums and attractions are almost non-existent, and bargaining at the deserted markets is in your favor. The Christmas market river cruises are among the most popular of the season, alighting at each frankincense-filled pop-up along the Rhine and Danube rivers. It’s important to note for ocean cruises that the seas can be rough, especially the Bay of Biscay. Weather conditions can often lead to last-minute itinerary changes and canceled excursions. Also, some of the port highlights use the slow season to close for break or refurbishment. Plan ahead and come prepared with a few options for each port.
Among the new ships making their way through Europe this winter season, AmaWaterways' 196-passenger AmaMagna is turning heads as the first-of-its-kind, extra-wide river ship. The ship is nearly twice the width of standard riverboats, increasing capacity but also adding more interior space for dining venues, a heated pool, and a water sports platform from the back of the ship. The ship will roam the Danube year-round, including an annual November and December Christmas Markets on the Danube tour .

European Cruise Departure Ports
- London (Southampton)
Rooted in Greek mythology, Athens is alive with stories from civilizations of the past. On a cruise to Europe departing from Athens, arrive early to tour the remains of ancient lores — like the Temple of Olympian Zeus and Acropolis — dine at the city’s lively tavernas and admire iconic sculptures bathed in natural light within the Acropolis Museum.
Until it was popularized by the 1992 Olympics, Barcelona was a hidden gem amidst Europe’s diverse landscapes. Now it’s widely recognized for its architectural masterpieces and spirited customs. On European cruises from Barcelona, leave enough time before you depart to visit Park Güell — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — and feel inspired by the colors and unique artistry that lies in the park and throughout the entire city.
Copenhagen boasts equal parts charm and culture. Before you set sail on your European cruise, indulge in thrills at Tivoli Gardens, and ride a bike along Nyhavn’s waterways, passing multi-colored homes on the way. Tour ancient fortresses, like Kronborg Castle, which inspired Shakespeare’s “Hamlet.” Or make a stop to see Copenhagen’s most famous symbol, The Little Mermaid.
From double-decker buses and telephone booths to medieval castles and monuments, experience the best of the city and countryside on a European cruise from Southampton. Ride on the London Eye, and watch the Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace. Then head west and walk the hallways of Windsor Castle, or travel even further to learn about the mystery of Stonehenge.
Italy’s capital city is something of a dream. Grand chapels and stone angels line the roads, whispering secrets of Rome’s past. On a cruise to Europe from Rome, arrive early to toss a coin into Trevi Fountain. Legend has it, you’ll be guaranteed return to The Eternal City. Then walk in the footsteps of Emperors at the Colosseum, and receive a blessing from the Pope at St. Peter’s Square.
Why Cruise in Europe
With Princess, travel effortlessly through Mediterranean beaches, British Isles, Russian palaces and Norwegian fjords. On a European cruise, meet locals who call these destinations home, see world-famous landmarks and relive stories of the past.

But with Princess, you can spend more time exploring Europe and less time checking into your next hotel.
Experience Different Seasons of Europe
Sail into the season
See the many faces of the world with seasonal European cruise sailings from Princess. In the spring, shop France’s colorful outdoor markets for hand-crafted souvenirs. Frolic through Norway’s landscapes when they fully bloom in summer. Or visit Italy in the fall to taste the first wines of the season.
Sail Aboard Our Newest Ships
Your best-in-class travel companion
Built in Italy, our newest ships first set sail in international waters for their inaugural season. On a European cruise, you can be one of the first to travel aboard these vessels, adding a whole new level of excitement and opportunity to your trip. Plus these are the first ships designed with Princess® MedallionClass®, making them the best European cruises at sea.
See Famous Landmarks
Where history books come alive
Between the castles, towers and ruins, Europe is teeming with ancient architecture. On a European cruise, sail into Le Havre and choose to visit the beaches of Normandy or ascend the Eiffel Tower in Paris. Walk through the Colosseum in Rome, and stop by Livorno to see the Leaning Tower of Pisa. Or explore hidden gems — like Belfast’s Giant’s Causeway.
A Vacation for Every Generation
Adventures for all
In Europe, there are activities for all. With exciting tours through age-old cities, kids can see textbooks come to life and return with their own stories to tell. Parents can relish in romance and relaxation amidst fairytale landscapes, and grandparents can relive stories of memories past with their loved ones. Enjoy a food and wine pairing in the home of a local Tuscan farmer. Capture snapshots of Glasgow’s breathtaking scenery with the help of a Scottish photographer. Then head ashore to savor fresh ingredients and iconic dishes, including fresh Greek salads and Italian gelato. From ship to shore, taste the best of abroad with Princess.
Sip and savor
Home to some of the best vineyards in the world, Europe knows a thing or two about wine — and so does Princess. Or enjoy a glass from the comfort of your stateroom balcony while taking in views of Europe’s most inspiring shorelines.
Cultural Immersion

Even kids can awaken their sense of wonder with our Youth and Teen Centers, created in partnership with Discovery™ and Animal Planet™.
Entertainment
Find your joy

Top 10 Helpful Tips For Your Mediterranean Winter Cruise
By: Author Maria Haase
Winter is my favorite time to cruise in the Mediterranean. The crowds are less, the weather is not scorching hot, the atmosphere is more calm and relaxing. Don’t get me wrong, I also really enjoyed my Greek island cruise during the summer. It is just a very different experience.
A winter cruise in the Mediterranean is a completely different experience, though. While the weather is usually still milder than many places, it is definitely not a beach-y vacation. But if you want to see some amazing destinations, explore and are ok with it not being hot, you are in for a real treat.

10 Tips You Need To Know Before Your Mediterranean Winter Cruise
I recently was invited on a 8 day Eastern Mediterranean cruise by Celestyal Cruises and my husband and I had a wonderful time. They have an amazing sale going on with cruises starting at $339/person . Hurry up and see if you can snatch a deal. This was my first winter cruise and I have a few helpful tips for you next Mediterranean winter cruise that you need to know before you go:
Pack Layers & Pack Light
Leave your thick sweaters at home. They are bulky to pack, hard to wash, and heavy. They also can be uncomfortably hot when you are inside. And the Mediterranean countries do not get super cold, even in winter.
I highly recommend to pack layers instead. Bring clothes that you can mix and match with each other. I like to bring a few long-sleeve shirts or blouses, a few tank tops for colder days underneath, and a few cardigans in various warmths.
As a top layer, I bring this 3-in-1 jacket from Tommy Hilfiger . I love this jacket. So convenient and perfect for every occasion.
For travel pants, I like to bring 1-2 thin jeans, 1 pair of slacks and 1 pair of hiking/travel pants, and a few leggings. I can layer those under my other pants if it is really cold or wear with a longer tunic-style shirt.
For dressier occasions, I bring 1-2 nice tops to wear with slacks, a few fun scarfs, as well as a long-sleeve dress.
My husband brings a few undershirts, a few button-down shirts, and a few thin sweaters or cardigans to layer on top the button down shirts. He also brings 1-2 long-sleeve button downs, a sport coat, jeans and 1 pair of slacks as well as 1-2 ties.
Laundry is usually pretty cheap on cruises, so take advantage of that as well. We paid only 20 EUR for a large bag with next day delivery (~ 1 weeks worth of underwear and socks for 2 people, 8x shirts, 4x pants, 2x pajamas). This makes your suitcase easier to handle, and leaves more room for souvenirs.
While winter is technically off-season, most cruise companies reduce their number of sailings to accommodate for lesser demand. That means, even in the off-season, but especially if you are traveling during major holidays, the best cabins for winter Mediterranean cruises can book up quickly.
If you plan to travel during Thanksgiving week, Christmas break until the first week of January, I highly recommend to book a few months in advance. If you are more flexible and can travel during non-peak time, I would highly recommend it to avoid the biggest of crowds.
Find A Great Winter Cruise Itinerary
Picking a great itinerary is especially essential on a winter cruise in the Mediterranean. Cruising during that time is less about fun in the sun and beach time, but more about cultural and historic places.
Pick a cruise that takes you to places that have more to offer than beaches and snorkeling, such as great museums, castles, or palaces so you have some indoor alternatives in case the weather is not so great.
On our recent cruise in December, we visited 3 continents: Egypt, Israel, Cyprus, Rhodes, and Turkey. While we were lucky with the weather in each of our destinations, we spent quite a bit of time inside. And remember to pack a good raincoat in case you do experience some not so great weather.
Know What To Expect From A Winter Cruise
Yes, the winter in the Mediterranean is milder than in most places. Freezing temperatures are rare, but they do happen. So does rain and the occasional gloomy day. So if you are looking for HOT weather and beach time, snorkeling excursions and sunbathing, a Mediterranean winter cruise might not be the right thing for you.
However, if you prefer milder, spring-like temperatures, fewer crowds, and a romantic walk on the beach makes you equally as happy as frolicking in the water for hours, a winter cruise might be just the right choice for you.
Prepare For Rougher Seas
As the weather is colder during the winter months, the sea can also be a bit rougher than in the summer. We had two rough nights at sea, where we sailed across the open water of the Mediterranean. While it wasn’t dangerous in any way, the waves were very noticeable and strong enough that some of our belongings rolled off our table and shelves. Our ship, the Celestyal Crystal , had stabilizers which made it a lot smoother though.
If you have even the slightest notion to get seasick, I highly recommend to bring your medication along and take it, if need be.
Plan Your Shore Excursions Carefully
Do some research about the weather at the ports on your itinerary before you sign up for any excursions. Also check if there are any alternatives offered, if the weather is bad and if you can get a refund for bad weather or if it is considered “an act of god”.
If you do decide to sign up for an activity that takes place mostly outdoors, make sure that you bring some appropriate clothing. I always say: “There is no bad weather, only bad clothing mixed with a bad attitude.” If you can stay warm, dry and have a positive attitude, you can still have tons of fun, even if the weather is not so great.
Pay Attention To Time In Port
Depending on the cruise line, you have more or less hours in port. Make sure that those hours in port are taking advantage of the most daylight hours. During the winter, it can get dark quite early, so make sure you pick an itinerary that offers you the most daylight hours in port.
This was one of the reasons why I really fell in love with Celestyal Cruises . They have some of the longest times in port I have ever seen on any cruise line. In Egypt, we had 15+ hours of shore time. Some of their cruise stops in Greece even offer overnight stays in some ports (Mykonos), so you can watch the sunset from land and take advantage of the local nightlife.
Helpful Things You Should Pack
- Rain coat (I already mentioned my favorite one above!)
- A waterproof bag or a few ziplock bags to keep things like your camera or passports dry in your purse/backpack.
- Books/ Kindle to keep you occupied during sea days and not so great weather.

Check If Kids Clubs & Other Amenities Are Open
During winter cruises, some of the amenities on the ship might not be open due to low demand. For example, not all bars might be staffed at all hours, or the kids club might be closed during non-school holiday sailings. Make sure to check ahead, if you plan to use specific amenities during your winter cruise.
Holiday Cruising
If you are cruising during the winter Holidays, I not only recommend to book early, but also a few other things. When you are away from your home, family, and friends for the Holidays, you might want to bring along a little something to remind you of them.
Our cruise ship was beautifully decorated for the Holidays. There were Christmas trees and Gingerbread houses everywhere. We sailed during the first half of December, but if I were to sail during the Holidays directly, I would bring 1-2 of my favorite Christmas decorations from home to put up that remind me of home. I also would have a scheduled Face-Time call to connect with my loved ones at home and wish them Happy Holidays. Maybe there is a way you can bring your favorite Holiday tradition with you on your cruise?
Also keep in mind that people like to dress up more festively during the Holidays, so maybe bring 1-2 more dressy outfits for your dinners and Holiday parties. Maybe you even have a special Holiday-themed outfit you want to bring for some photos?
Don’t forget the presents – if your traveling companions do that kind of thing. However, I think a Holiday cruise might be the perfect occasion to focus on giving experiences rather than things. That way, you don’t have to worry about packing, wrapping, and breaking your gifts and can rather make some amazing memories together.
A Mediterranean winter cruise is a unique experience, but certainly a lot of fun. I actually prefer cruising in the winter, because I don’t like HOT weather and prefer to visit places when they are not as crowded.
To book this winter cruise I mentioned above, just go to the Celestyal Cruise website and read more details about sailing dates, cabins and of course to go through the booking process.
A big thank you again for the team from Celestyal who invited us on this cruise around the Eastern Mediterranean in December and made this trip possible. Thank you Chuck, Marios, and Frosso for taking such great care of us.

Introducing the new cruise map of Europe – with Venice falling from favour
W ith the backlash against cruise ships in some of Europe’s most popular ports refusing to subside, the cruising map of the region is being subtly redrawn as companies search for alternative stops.
Norwegian Cruise Line this week announced that it would stop visiting Venice over the requirement, introduced in 2021, to tender guests from outside the lagoon. “Large cruise ships are required to anchor outside and utilise tender boats,” the line said. “While we have made every effort to maintain these calls, the tender operation and overall experience falls short of the standard we aim to deliver.”
And in October last year, Barcelona moved to deter cruise ships and ferries from visiting due to concerns about overtourism. Such was the proximity of its now-closed cruise terminal to the city centre, passengers could stroll to the popular Las Ramblas shopping street in just a few minutes. Now they face a shuttle bus journey from the more distant Adossat wharf, where ships are required to berth.
These developments illustrate the tightening squeeze on cruise ships from a number of destinations, prompting cruise lines to start substituting other ports wherever possible. Instead of Venice, for example, lines with larger ships have been forced to find alternative cities along Italy’s Adriatic coastline, such as Ravenna.
Not only do new destinations spice up itineraries as fresh points of interest, but they promise a better overall experience for cruise guests, away from the general crowds drawn en masse to Europe’s, and particularly the Mediterranean’s, tourism hotspots.
Here’s a taste of how some of them are being replaced or complemented by alternative ports.
Instead of Venice, there’s Ravenna
The protests of Venetians under the No Grandi Navi (no big ships) campaign were well documented and after years of wrangling, the ban on large ships has resulted in many lines, including Norwegian Cruise Line, using Ravenna instead.
Located more than 120 miles south of Venice , this ancient city has a wealth of history with Roman roots and medieval churches full of beautiful mosaics. In addition to Ravenna, some lines use Trieste on the border of Italy and Slovenia or Fusina, a small town just 12 miles from Venice that attracts the smaller ships of boutique lines including Seabourn, from where passengers can jump on the ferry to Venice.
Instead of Dubrovnik, there’s Split
The city’s mayor implemented a cap on cruise ship visits in 2018 that limited the number of arriving vessels to two a day and carrying no more than 8,000 passengers between them. Many lines, such as P&O Cruises, have looked to replace or complement visits with calls at Split, Croatia’s second city which is dominated by remains of the Roman Diocletian Palace whose extensive stone colonnades house an extraordinary collection of restaurants and shops.
Another alternative is Sibenik, a lesser-known but charming city north of Split that is a gateway to the Kornati Islands and Kornati National Park. Game of Thrones fans who are naturally drawn to Dubrovnik can also get their fix here as scenes from the cult series were filmed in Sibenik too.
Instead of Santorini, there’s Naxos
Such is Santorini’s appeal and ability to accommodate larger ships that anchor in the vast caldera, the Greek island is still a fixture on many cruise line itineraries. Cruise ship arrivals are already limited to 8,000 per day, but the overall burden of visitors makes the summer peak season unbearable as the tiny stone streets in the capital Fira and the beautiful white-washed town of Oia are packed to bursting .
It is easier for small and medium-size ships to find alternative islands and nearby Naxos, as the largest and most fertile of the Cyclades, has Venetian history in abundance while its main town Hora boasts Venetian mansions, snaking alleyways and small streets full of bars and restaurants, attracting lines such as Explora Journeys, Silversea and Seabourn.
Instead of Barcelona, there’s Tarragona
In addition to closing the north terminal at its World Trade Centre, Barcelona is also capping the number of cruise ships to seven at any one time. As a major turnaround port, where many cruises start and finish, substituting another port is more problematic.
However, on sailings where the Catalan city is simply a day stop, Tarragona further west is attracting attention as an alternative with lines such as MSC Cruises already calling there. This port city flows with ancient flavours as one of Spain’s most important Roman sites with a seafront amphitheatre and a characterful medieval centre. Further west is Spain’s third largest city, Valencia, which already attracts several lines including Cunard, and is bursting with culture that underpins its atmospheric old quarter and striking collection of modernist buildings.
Instead of Amsterdam, there’s Rotterdam
When the so-called Venice of the North suddenly ramped up cruise passenger taxes in 2019, a number of cruise lines skipped the city and called at Rotterdam instead. Now Amsterdam’s politicians have the cruise industry in their sights again, having voted last July to ban ocean ships from docking at the city centre port .
However, this is unlikely to happen in the immediate future as port calls are scheduled until 2026, though there are ongoing talks over relocating the port away from its current location close to the central station.
Some lines, such as Viking Cruises, already call at the somewhat industrial port city of Ijmuiden on the Dutch coast, around 18 miles from Amsterdam and regarded as the city’s ocean-facing port. However, Rotterdam, with its dynamic vibe and diverse architecture offers a contrasting flavour with the likes of Princess Cruises calling there.

Ukraine-Russia war latest: Ukraine advises civilians to avoid using Crimean bridge; Navalny 'died from a blood clot', says Ukraine
A Ukrainian official has said Navalny died from a blood clot. Meanwhile, civilians have been urged to avoid using the Crimean bridge, with Ukraine's defence intelligence chief warning "new surprises" await Russia.

At least four people have been injured in a Russian attack on Dnipro, the local governor has said.
Serhii Lysak said Russian forces attacked the city with cruise missiles and drones, damaging 10 houses and several cars.
Two men aged 41 and 49 and two women aged 20 and 60 have been taken to hospital, he added.
"The enemy is once again directing his weapons at peaceful cities. Let's hold on. Let's support the defence forces. We have to expel terrorists from our land," he wrote on Telegram.
By John Sparks , international correspondent
The city of Avdiivka now constitutes a Russian trophy in a state of ruin.
The logistics hub - or what's left of it - was exhibited by uniformed Russian officials after months of intensive fighting on the front line.
It is their latest conquest in the invasion of Ukraine and the latest setback for their hard-pressed neighbour.
It was with reports of further Russian advances in villages surrounding Avdiivka that the Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy convened an all-day conference along with his ministers and general in a smart Kyiv hotel.
The gathering may have been designed as a show of confidence - or reassurance - but his address began with something that sounded like an admission - the first time he has spoken about the number of Ukrainian soldiers who have died since the beginning of the full-scale invasion.
"I'm not sure if I have the right. It's a very serious moment. Let's start from the beginning. Recently, there were voices in a radical part of some American political circles that were not on our side. They said, 'How many more casualties do you want? Ukraine has lost 300,000 lives...' This is all nonsense, this is all rubbish. Every person lost is a great loss for us, and it's a very big loss for us - 31,000 Ukrainian soldiers died in this war."
Critics will argue that the number is too low, with Western officials saying the total is closer to 70,000, although the president had felt the need to give a figure.
There was another attempt at candour when I asked the Ukrainian leader whether he was prepared to cede territory to the Russians as the country attempts to rearm its depleted military.
Zelenskyy responded by referring to the shortage of artillery shells now faced by his forces - a ratio he estimated at 1 Ukrainian shell for every 12 Russian munitions fired.
"When we are at 1 to 1.5 (shells) or 1 to 3 (shells) then we can push back the Russians. Until we reach such numbers, we either hold our positions - or we lose them - 100 metres, 50 metres. Unfortunately, this is it."
The prospect that Ukrainian forces will lose ground to the Russians seemed all too real to our team when we travelled to the city of Kupyansk on the north-eastern section of the front.
Soldiers told us they were under severe pressure, with Russian troops mounting continuous attacks. An anti-tank commander said he only had enough grenades to fire for approximately 15 minutes.
This was something we were able to raise with the country’s powerful head of military intelligence, General Kyrylo Budanov, who also attended the conference.
"It's been a really tough period at the front (for Ukraine), what message are trying to send now?"I asked when we spoke outside the main hall.
"Listen, don't dramatize the situation, that's what I want to say. The situation is hardly different from yesterday, the day before, or a month ago," he responded with evident frustration.
"But your soldiers are under pressure," I responded. "We have been to Kupyansk," I said before the general cut me off.
"There are no problems in the Kupyansk direction. There are issues in Avdiivka direction," he said.
"What do you want from the West? What do you need?"
"We need weapons, and the sooner the better."
The Ukrainians used this conference to sell the national story of resilience and heroic struggle – but it was General Budanov who seemed to get to the point.
Survival will not be achieved without urgent Western help.
Seven NATO submarines are taking part in the organisation's largest and most complex underwater exercise in the Mediterranean.
The vessels from Greece, France, Italy, Spain, Turkey and the US arrived off the coast of Sicily to carry out the Dynamic Manta 24 exercise today.
Naval assets took turns to hunt and be hunted in close coordination with air and surface assets, to train and refine capabilities in this particular type of warfare, officials said.
As NATO's most advanced anti-submarine warfare (ASW) exercise, it prepares crews to respond and adapt to any kind of threat below the sea surface.
The Italian Navy is hosting the exercise, providing logistical support from the Augusta naval base, the port of Catania and the Sigonella air base.
"NATO ships in the Eastern Mediterranean routinely monitor Russian naval activity, including submarines," said Alper Vural, Lieutenant Commander of the Turkish submarine.
"Allies have also decided to enhance NATO's standing naval forces with more ships. This is important for training and situational awareness."
Russian forces have advanced in three locations, according to a leading US thinktank.
The Institute for the Study of War said Russian troops have made "confirmed advances" near Bakhmut, Avdiivka and western Zaporizhzhia.
It said geolocated footage showed "continued positional fighting" in some areas yesterday.
"A Russian milblogger claimed that Russian forces recently advanced up to 1.5 kilometres in the direction of Orlivka (west of Avdiivka) from the Avdiivka Coke Plant," it added.
The eastern city of Avdiivka fell into Russian hands earlier this month following intense battles.
Earlier today, Russia's defence ministry said troops had taken a more advantageous position in the city and rebuffed seven Ukrainian attacks.
Two Ukrainian missiles have been "destroyed" over the Black Sea, the Russian defence ministry has said.
The aircraft guided missiles were launched towards targets on Russian territory, it said.
Air defence systems were used to destroy the weapons, it added.
Ukraine has in recent months mounted a series of drone and missile attacks on Russian military targets in the Black Sea, sinking at least one naval vessel and damaging others.
Russian forces have shot Ukrainian soldiers after they surrendered in an incident near Bakhmut, Kyiv's human rights commissioner has said.
In a post on Telegram, Dmytro Lubinets said at least seven servicemen were "executed" by Russian forces.
He shared a video purporting the moment the soldiers were killed, but this has not been verified by Sky News.
"The video shows that the Ukrainian servicemen surrender: their hands were raised to the top, they showed that they were unarmed and did not pose a threat," Mr Lubinets said.
"The Russian military was supposed to take them prisoner, but instead they mercilessly shot them."
He said the shooting was a war crime and urged for the United Nations and the Red Cross to record the incident as such.
Russians in the UK have held an anti-war protest outside their country's embassy today.
Organised by the Russian Democratic Society, the demonstration comes a day after the second anniversary of the Kremlin's invasion of Ukraine.
The group said the protest was against the "egregious violence, war crimes, and human rights violations" perpetrated in Ukraine by Moscow.
Ksenia Maximova, the founder of the organisation, said opposition to the war in Russia was "widespread" and that opinion polls within the country "cannot be trusted".
"This is the way to show that Russians are not indifferent to what is going on and that we stand in solidarity with Ukraine," she said.
Around 250 demonstrators met at Marble Arch this afternoon before marching to the Russian Embassy in Kensington.
Flowers and messages of condolence had been left opposite the embassy to commemorate Alexei Navalny - Vladimir Putin's best known opponent who died suddenly last week.
During his two-hour news conference earlier today, the Ukrainian president mocked Vladimir Putin for not having a mobile phone.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy was asked by a reporter if he would answer a call from the Russian president.

Ukrainian authorities uncovered 47 Russian spy networks operating inside the country last year, a senior security official has said.
Vasyl Maliuk, head of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), made the remark during a televised conference in Kyiv.
He added that more than 2,000 suspected "traitors" had been arrested since the war began.
"The SBU is, was and will be a scalpel in the hands of the Ukrainian people, which will cut out these shameful phenomena, which I have listed, like cancerous tumours," he said.
Ukraine's defence intelligence chief Kyrylo Budanov says it is "more or less confirmed" that Alexei Navalny died from natural causes - specifically a blood clot.
This cause of death has previously been reported by Russian state-controlled media.
Speaking on the sidelines of Sunday's Year 2024 forum in Kyiv, Mr Budanov reportedly agreed with that assessment.
"I may disappoint you, but what we know is that he really died from a blood clot," he said, according to Ukrainian broadcaster Hromadske.
"And this is more or less confirmed. This was not taken from the internet, but, unfortunately, a natural [death]."
Many have blamed Russian President Vladimir Putin for the opposition leader's death in an Arctic penal colony, with growing calls for an independent investigation.
During a news conference earlier today, Volodymyr Zelenskyy continued to express the same sentiment, saying Mr Navalny had been "murdered".
