Disney Cruise Dining Schedule Overview

Are you ready to indulge in the delectable dining experience on your Disney Cruise? Let’s dive into the dining schedule overview and discover when second seating is!

Disney Cruise offers a variety of dining options to cater to every guest’s preference. One of these options is second seating, which allows you to enjoy your dinner a little later in the evening. This can be beneficial for those who prefer a more relaxed schedule or want to participate in other onboard activities before dinner.

Second seating typically starts around 8:15 or 8:30 PM, allowing you to take your time and savor each course. Understanding the first and second seating options is essential to plan your day and make the most out of your dining experience.

So, now that you know about second seating, let’s delve into the details of these dining options.

Understanding the First and Second Seating Options

Get ready to experience the magic of dining on a Disney cruise with two convenient options for enjoying your meals! When it comes to dining on a Disney cruise, guests can choose between first and second seating.

The main difference between the two is the time at which you’ll be seated for dinner. First seating typically starts around 5:45 PM, while second seating usually begins around 8:15 PM.

Making reservations for second seating is a great option if you prefer to have a later dinner time. This can be especially helpful if you have young children who may need time to wind down before heading to the dining room. To secure a reservation for second seating, simply let the Disney Cruise Line know your preference when booking your cruise.

Next, we’ll explore the differences between first seating and second seating, so you can decide which option is best for you and your family.

Differences between First Seating and Second Seating

One surprising fact is that families who choose first seating tend to have a shorter wait time for their meals compared to those who choose second seating. This is because the dining staff can focus their attention on serving the first seating guests without the pressure of having to prepare for the next group.

Additionally, first seating guests have the advantage of being able to enjoy the evening activities on the ship without having to rush to dinner. Another advantage of first seating is the wider selection of menu options available. The chefs have more time to prepare and present a variety of dishes, catering to different tastes and dietary restrictions.

Now, let’s move on to the next section and find out what time second seating is.

What Time is Second Seating?

Join us for a delightful evening as you indulge in the delectable cuisine during the later dining option on your Disney cruise. Second seating offers a range of timing options to suit your preferences and maximize your enjoyment.

Here are four benefits of choosing second seating:

Flexibility: With second seating, you have more flexibility during the day to explore the ship’s activities and attractions without rushing back for dinner.

Less Crowded: Second seating tends to be less crowded, allowing for a more intimate dining experience and personalized service.

Sunset Views: If you’re lucky, second seating may coincide with sunset, offering breathtaking views from the dining room.

Evening Entertainment: Following dinner, you can enjoy the ship’s evening entertainment options, such as live shows or movies under the stars.

Considering these benefits, you’ll want to make the most of your Disney cruise experience. Factors that may affect the timing of second seating will be discussed in the subsequent section.

Factors that May Affect the Timing of Second Seating

Experience an unforgettable evening on your Disney cruise by considering the factors that may influence the timing of the delightful second dining option. The timing of second seating can be affected by various factors, ensuring a smooth and enjoyable dining experience for all guests. Here are three key factors that may affect the timing:

First seating duration: The length of the first seating can impact when the second seating begins. If the first seating runs longer than expected, the start time for second seating may be delayed.

Cleaning and preparation: After the first seating, the dining staff need time to clean and reset the tables for the next guests. This process may take some time, which can affect the start time of second seating.

Entertainment schedule: Disney cruises offer a wide range of entertainment options, including live shows and character meet and greets. The timing of second seating may be adjusted to allow guests to enjoy these activities before or after their meal.

Considering these factors, second seating offers several advantages. It allows guests to have a more relaxed evening and enjoy the ship’s entertainment without rushing. It also provides flexibility for those who prefer to spend their day exploring the ports of call. So, after understanding the factors affecting timing and the benefits of second seating, let’s explore how to make reservations for this fantastic dining experience.

Making Reservations for Second Seating

To secure a spot for the delightful second dining option, be sure to make reservations in advance. Making reservations for second seating is a great way to ensure that you get the dining experience you desire.

7 Best Day Bags for Cruises

cruise bag designs

You may have the ultimate suitcase for your upcoming cruise, but don't forget about another all-important piece of luggage: the day bag. What bag you'll need for a day in port depends on a few factors: what type of shore excursions you've booked, if you're lugging camera equipment along or if you're the Sherpa for your entire family and their stuff.

We've picked these day bags to suit a variety of cruise adventures ashore. With the right bag for a destination, you'll feel equipped to explore your cruise port in confidence.

On This Page

Jemma overnight bag, fashion backpack, cross-body bag.

Jemma overnight bag

As cruise ships increase overnight calls in port, you might find yourself needing a bag that will hold everything to last you until the following day. The Birdie bag by Jemma has enough room for a change of clothes, but also compartments for your phone, laptop, a bottle of water -- even a ventilated pocket for a pair of shoes. Families will enjoy the organized space to hold a little of everything for a day in port. All bags are made with Italian nylon and come with a separate accessory case and laundry bag.

Backpack

There's almost no better bag for an active day in port than a good ol' backpack. This Stowaway backpack by Eddie Bauer is lightweight, stuffable and can be easily consolidated into a smaller front-zip pocket or rolled into a suitcase. A hands-free pack is equally useful exploring glaciers in Alaska or climbing the stairs of a cathedral in Europe.

Camera bag

For cruisers who can't be without their DSLR, this camera backpack by Beaspire is perfect for storing lenses and gear, with room for everyday essentials. A padded, pull-out compartment protects the camera, while a zippered main compartment contains a laptop sleeve and plenty of space for guidebooks and a spare sweater. Straps on the bottom can even hold a tripod. Prepare to take spectacular shots of every port of call with this bag in tow.

Drawstring

Drawstring bags are a low-maintenance way to store your stuff for an afternoon ashore. A sack like this drawstring bag by Adidas fits everything, takes little to no space in luggage and as an added perk -- it's difficult to pickpocket. It's a day bag that even your teenage son will be willing to carry off the cruise ship.

Fashion backpack

Not every backpack has to be sporty, and this trendy bag by Fjallraven proves its Scandinavian style is not just fashionable, but also functional. Inspired by the school bags of Sweden, the Kanken day bag is water- and stain-resistant, has handles as well as ergonomic straps and a large main compartment. It's the perfect bag to blend right in during your Northern Europe cruise.

Cross-body bag

Sometimes you just need the essentials -- not 20 pounds of paraphernalia -- to accompany you ashore. This cross-body bag by Travelon is a roomy purse that doubles as a travel pack with anti-theft features. Side pockets hold a bottle of water or an umbrella, the front pockets lock and there's a key clip with an LED flashlight for locating exactly what you need -- even in low light.

Beach tote

Perhaps the most iconic cruise bag of all is the beach tote. We love this tote by Forever Cultivate for its multitude of fun patterns and its top zipper closure to keep out the sand. Lightweight with durable straps and made with a waterproof polyester, this bag will turn heads while protecting your belongings for a perfect beach day in port.

Duffel bags are also a good option for cruising. They’re versatile and can be used for both packing and storing your belongings on the ship.

What Are the Benefits of Using the Right Luggage For a Cruise?

You’ll Have More Room to Store Things

One of the biggest benefits of using the right luggage for a cruise is that you’ll have more room to store things. When you’re on a cruise, there are a lot of things that you’ll want to bring with you, such as sunscreen, swimsuits, hats, and sunglasses. But if you have enough room to store these things in your luggage, you won’t have to worry about packing them in your carry-on bag or taking up space in your hotel room.

Your Luggage Will Be More Durable

Another benefit of using the right luggage for a cruise is that your luggage will be more durable. When you’re on a cruise, there are a lot of activities that can damage your luggage, such as getting wet, being in the sun, and being dragged across the deck. But if you have luggage that is specifically designed for cruises, it will be able to withstand these types of activities much better.

You Won’t Lose Your Luggage

Finally, another benefit of using the right luggage for a cruise is that you won’t lose your luggage. When you’re on a cruise, there are a lot of people and a lot of places to lose your luggage. But if you have a good piece of luggage, you’ll be able to keep track of it better and you’ll be less likely to lose it.

Best Luggage for a Cruise: FAQs

What is the best size luggage for a cruise.

When planning a cruise, one of the most important things to consider is what size luggage to bring. You want to make sure you have enough space for all of your essentials, but you also don’t want to bring too much and have to pay extra fees. The best size luggage for a cruise is typically a medium-sized suitcase. However, it’s always a good idea to check with your cruise line before you book to see what their luggage guidelines are.

Do they check your luggage on a cruise?

Yes, they do check your luggage on a cruise. In fact, they check it quite thoroughly. They will go through every item in your bag and make sure that it is safe and compliant with the cruise line’s rules and regulations. They may even open up your suitcase and rummage through your clothes if they suspect that you are hiding something.

Can you carry your own luggage on a cruise ship?

Many cruise lines allow passengers to carry their own luggage on board the ship. However, there are some restrictions that you should be aware of before you pack your bags. First, make sure that your luggage is not too big or too heavy. Most cruise lines have size and weight restrictions for luggage, so be sure to check the requirements of your particular cruise line before you pack. Second, keep in mind that you will need to be able to lift and carry your own luggage. If you are traveling with young children or have mobility concerns, you may want to consider having someone else carry your luggage for you. Lastly, keep in mind that you will need to carry your luggage up and down stairs. If you are traveling with a lot of luggage, you may want to consider using a luggage cart.

Can I lock my luggage for a cruise?

Most major cruise lines allow you to lock your luggage, but there are a few things you should keep in mind before you do. First, be sure to use a TSA-approved lock , as this will allow security to open your luggage if they need to. Secondly, keep in mind that while your luggage will be safe from prying eyes, it will still be subject to the elements. So if you’re planning on taking any valuables with you on your cruise, it’s best to keep them in your carry-on bag.

What should you not pack on a cruise?

There are a few things you should avoid packing on a cruise. First, anything that is illegal in the country you are visiting. This includes drugs, weapons, and certain types of food. Second, anything that is perishable or could easily spoil. This includes food, beverages, and cigarettes. Finally, anything that is flammable or could be dangerous if it caught fire. This includes, such as cleaning supplies, matches, and lighters.

The best cruise ship luggage – suitcases, carry-ons & cross-body bags

Finding your perfect cruise ship luggage pieces.

As cruise travelers, we want sturdy, long-lasting suitcases and bags that are easy to transport and withstand the heavy handling by airline and the cruise line baggage handlers. We also want our luggage to look good, be comfortable, and offer flexible packing options with plenty of compartments and pockets for our travel essentials.

We have listed our favorite luggage set in our essential cruise item list, but luggage does deserve a little more focus. After all, there are many options depending on what type of traveler you are. Often the very minimum we cruise with is one large checked suitcase plus a smaller piece of carry-on cabin baggage containing items such as travel documents, medicine, and a few spare items of clothing. Should our checked luggage go missing, the items we bring in our carry-on will be our lifeline for at least a day or two.

And with the mention of missing luggage, a trackable device attached to your suitcase to quickly locate your bag is a good idea.

When visiting different destinations, you may want to include a backpack or a popular cross-body bag for your shore excursion. You will need to carry your passport, wallet, smartphone, cruise card, and other essentials such as sun cream, a water bottle, and a waterproof jacket.

How we have chosen the cabin luggage pieces below

We travel as a family of four. Two adults and two children. Often our parents join us. And we all have different needs and therefore not the same type of luggage. When contemplating the best bags to buy, the decision is based on a combination of cost and need. Read on to find out which pieces are best for you and your cruise travel companions.

Cruise Carry On Bag – How to Pack Like an Expert

Sharing is caring!

You are excited and ready to board your cruise. But have you given enough thought as to what you need to pack in your cruise carry-on bag?

This really does need some thought as your checked luggage might take until early evening to reach your stateroom.

So you need to make sure that you have everything with you that you need for your first hours on your cruise.

When You Arrive at Your Cruise Port

Whatever port you are sailing from there will be a place where you will leave the bags that you want to check in.

It’s always pretty obvious where this is – I have checked in at many ports around the world and the place to drop your bags is always well-signposted.

disneycruiseportguestservices

Remember that your check-in luggage should have the proper luggage labels, which are always provided by your cruise line. If you forget, the porters usually have spares and can help you with this.

You will probably be checking most of your luggage.

But everyone will have some cruise carry-on bags that they take with them to board the ship.

It might be some considerable time before your checked-in luggage arrives in your stateroom.

So you need to plan for that and have the items that you really want with you from the get-go, to be with you when you board. Cruise lines are very efficient in getting your bags to your stateroom, but always plan on what you would do if you don’t get your bags until late on embarkation day.

Here is a guide to what to pack in a carry-on for a cruise.

Essential Travel Documents

Always. And I mean always double and triple-check that you have the correct documents to board the ship in your cruise carry-on bag.

Even if you forget everything else, you must not forget these items or you won’t even be boarding your cruise.

I have experienced that heart-stopping moment at the cruise check-in desk when I could not find an essential document needed to board. I found it in the end, but it seemed like an age before I found my passport as it was not where I was convinced I put it in my bag.

portcanaveralcruise port

That was more than 10 years ago and I still remember that feeling of panic!

These days I am hyper-focused on where everything is in my carry-on bag, so I can find it the moment I need it.

Always check the documents that you need for everyone in your party to board your cruise. Don’t forget your kids as they still need the correct documents!

Each cruise line will have a page online that will spell out exactly which documents you need to board your cruise.

Here are the requirements to board a Disney Cruise.

Always make sure you are very clear about the documents needed to get on a cruise and make sure you have those easily accessible

What Kind of Carry On Cruise Bag Should I Pick?

This is an important consideration and there are various options.

My preference is for a traditional airline carry-on with wheels, combined with a backpack.

Think about what you can use on the cruise as well. So maybe take something that will double up nicely as a beach bag. Or a backpack for an excursion.

Depending upon the cruise you are sailing on, you may also want to bring a garment bag.

I admit I try and avoid doing this, but sometimes if you are sailing on a cruise with a formal night, or if you have specific outfits such as pirate costumes for a Disney Cruise , that really you can’t crush in a suitcase, this is an excellent solution so that your clothes arrive in pristine condition.

Great Carry On Luggage for a Cruise

Many of you are going to be flying to your cruise port so it is obviously a good idea that you choose something that is great for a flight as well as for a cruise.

Even if you drive to a cruise port, the cruise habit is a difficult one to break, so you may find that further into the future you start flying to different ports. so picking luggage that is suitable for both a cruise and flying really makes sense.

My absolute favorite is my very tried and tested Monos luggage and bags .

I travel a lot. And I went through a lot of brands before I found the best.

cruise bag designs

I have the Carry-on Plus, Metro Duffel, and Check-in Plus.

What I particularly like is the Metro Duffel which often qualifies as a personal item on aircraft – and you can fit so much in this! I also use on it’s own as a weekend bag as you can easily fit enough for a couple of nights away in this bag.

Go to Monos Luggage to get $20 off

Monos is top of the line, and if you don’t want to spend quite that much at the moment then there are some great alternatives.

However, I do feel that the quality of Monos makes it a great investment if you travel quite a bit. Mine has now traveled tens of thousands of miles, many cruises, and flights, and still looks as good as new.

This Luggage Carry On is very similar to the Monos, but definitely at a lower price point.

cruise bag designs

It comes in a variety of colors and you can either opt for the front pocket for your laptop or get the slightly cheaper version without that. This comes in really handy though when you are going through airport security and need to take your laptop out and put it in the bin for TSA.

This carry-on is very highly rated and comes in a variety of colors including a bright yellow! At least your bag won’t be confused with other cruisers if you choose a distinctive design.

3 Piece Luggage Set

This is a great luggage set that has everything you need for your cruise carry-on. It has the option of 20″, 24″ or 28″

It has a hard shell so is very durable, but light as well. It is perfect for if you are traveling just on a cruise, or arriving by air to the port. Just check that the size of the carry-on complies with your airline size restrictions.

What I like about this is that it has the weekender bag which you can either carry independently or it fits easily and securely on the top of the case, so that you can easily carry both of them. Instead of just trying to balance the bag on the top, there is a built-in sleeve so it fits over the handle of the carry-on case.

The toiletry bag is a nice additional thing to have.

If you already have a carry-on suitcase but want to add a weekend bag this one is a great option.

BAOSHA HB-28 Ladies Women Canvas Travel Weekender Bag Overnight Carry-on Duffel Tote Bag (Blue) 16 x 12 x 8 inch

I really like how this one has a nautical theme so it makes it perfect for cruising.

The bag easily and securely fits over a suitcase handle and carries a huge amount of your stuff. You can use it for the airplane (often as a personal item) and it usually fits underneath an airline seat so you will have access to your things throughout the flight.

Packing Cubes

Packing cubes are life-changing.

Well maybe not quite, but they certainly make your travel life much much easier.

They just keep things very organized and also allow you to pack more efficiently.

BAGAIL 8 Set Packing Cubes, Lightweight Travel Luggage Organizers with Shoe Bag, Toiletry Bag & Laundry Bag (Cream)

You can also unpack much easier as you can simply put the packing cube in the drawers or closet in your stateroom, and you know where they are.

Apple AirTag

This is my new favorite travel essential.

For those of you new to AirTags it is Apple’s Bluetooth tracking device. You simply attach it to things you don’t want to lose, for example, keys, wallet, or luggage. You can then track it with an iPhone or iPad.

I don’t pretend to understand how it works, but apparently, it uses other Apple devices such as phones to locate the item. But no personal data is transmitted when this happens.

Apple AirTag 4 Pack

I have had these since early 2023 and now I never travel without them. I attach them or put them inside all my luggage so that I can locate everything. This is particularly useful for checked luggage so you can see exactly where it is.

If you use AirTags on a cruise for your checked luggage you can see where your luggage is and if it is on the move.

On a recent trip to Universal Studios where I transferred from one hotel to another, it was very useful to see where my luggage was when it was supposed to be transferred to Universal Portofino Hotel. I could see it was still at Sapphire Falls when it should have been transferred hours ago.

It is also potentially incredibly useful if an airline loses your luggage – you should be able to see it’s location.

Wine Carrier

Some cruise lines, including Disney and Princess Cruises , allow you to take alcohol on board your cruise.

This always needs to be in carry-on luggage.

You need a safe way to transport the wine bottles, and you can just wrap them in your suitcase and hope for the best, but I always like to have something to keep the bottles from breaking. You really don’t want red wine all over your clothes.

I use these bottle protectors and they have always worked well. They don’t take up too much space in the luggage and they protect the bottles.

LIVEBAY 5 Pack Reusable Wine Bag for Travel Wine Bottle Protector Sleeve for Airplane Car Cruise Protection Luggage Leak-proof

Medications

Always have your medications in your cruise carry-on bag. Luggage usually arrives in your stateroom pretty quickly after boarding, but you absolutely do not want to be without your medications.

This includes prescription medicines obviously, but you may also want to carry some other items.

  • Motion Sickness Medication. No one wants to think about this, but it does happen. It is best to be prepared – here are some of the motion sickness remedies available.
  • This cruise essentials first aid and medications kit has you covered for most things. From pain relief to motion sickness, band-aids to insect repellant, this compact first aid kit really does cover a whole lot of what you need for a cruise.

What To Pack in Your Beach Bag

It is nice to have your toiletries and make-up with you so that you have them before your luggage arrives.

Even if you just take a toothbrush and some toothpaste in your cruise carry-on bag, this can make a difference.

Remember that for cruises, whilst your carry-on luggage will go through the X-ray machine at security this is not like boarding an airplane. No need to have your liquids less than a certain size or put them out in a plastic bag. They can remain in your carry-on and you can take full sizes if you want.

I love these cruise-themed makeup bags!

Cunno 6 Pcs Cruise Clear Makeup Bags for Women Cruise Survival Kit with Zipper Fun Travel Transparent PVC Waterproof Toiletry Organizer for Cruise Trip Cruise Gifts

They are the perfect size to keep lots of things organized and then you can just put them on the shelves in your cruise bathroom.

It is very important to pack your sunscreen in your carry-on luggage as you will need it from the start of your cruise. As you are not restricted to the size of any liquids you take on board a cruise in your carry-on bag, you can choose your favorite full-size sunscreen.

I like this Reef Friendly Suncreen . It is SPF 50, reef-friendly and chemical-free.

Always keep your valuables with you, and when you get to your cruise stateroom, put things in the safe.

I like to keep things organized in a Travel Jewelry Organizer Case, and this one is great for just packing in your carry on for your cruise.

BAGSMART Travel Jewelry Organizer Case Foldable Jewelry Roll for Journey-Rings, Necklaces, Earrings, Bracelets,Mini,Soft Pink

Water Bottle

This is more of a “nice to have” than an essential, but if you are flying into the cruise port, this also makes a lot of sense.

Bottles of water and at the cruise port, tend to cost a ridiculous amount of money. I take a water bottle. Then you can use water from the water fountain.

Contigo West Loop Stainless Steel Vacuum-Insulated Travel Mug with Spill-Proof Lid, Keeps Drinks Hot up to 5 Hours and Cold up to 12 Hours, 16oz Dark Plum

This bottle keeps drinks hotter for up to 5 hours or colder for up to 12 hours. It is spillproof as well, which is particularly helpful on a plane!

One thing about having a water bottle is that you never quite know where to put it and it can be a pain to carry if you have luggage. This is a cup holder for your luggage is a great solution.

Luggage Cup Holder Travel Essentials Cup Holder, Hands-Free Drink Holder with 2 Coffee Mugs Tightening Drawstring, Accessory for Flying & Travelers - Travel Luggage Accessories by YSCEN (Grey)

This comes in a huge range of colors so you can match it to your luggage.

It may be sometime before your checked luggage appears at your cruise stateroom door. Sometimes, it may not arrive before you have to get dressed for dinner.

Therefore I always make sure that I have some clothes in my carry-on that I would be happy to wear to the first dinner on the ship.

What You Need to Take on a Cruise – The Ultimate Guide

If you want to be the first to hit the pools then make sure that you pack everyone’s swimwear in your carry-on luggage.

This can be the perfect time to go to the cruise ship pools when everyone else is still finding their way around the ship and wishing that they hadn’t left all their swimwear in their checked luggage.

Always remember to take your sunglasses too!

I have had a couple of these hats for years. I love them as they look good, provide a lot of shade, and are practically indestructible, even if you cram it in a suitcase.

FURTALK Womens Beach Sun Straw Hat UV UPF50 Travel Foldable Brim Summer UV Hat

A sun hat is absolutely essential, but it can be a bit of a pain to carry around on the first day when you are walking around the ship with your carry-on luggage.

One solution of course is to wear it. Even inside. So then you don’t have to carry it or have any chance you will lose it.

Or you can get a clip to attach it to your carry-on case. I find this particularly useful for airplane travel when you don’t want to crush your hat in a suitcase, but you also want to be as hands-free as possible.

Portable Charger

If you are anything like me then by the time you have had lunch on a ship you have taken so many photos your phone battery is already looking decidedly drained. You might not yet have access to your cruise stateroom to go and charge your phone.

I have had this portable charger for a couple of years now and I have always been happy with it. I always pack it for any kind of travel, and it has never let me down. It charges quickly and is compact enough to carry around with you if you are out for the day.

INIU Portable Charger, Slimmest 10000mAh 5V/3A Power Bank, USB C in&out High-Speed Charging Battery Pack, External Phone Powerbank Compatible with iPhone 15 14 13 12 11 Samsung S22 S21 Google iPad etc

Cruise Lanyard

Most cruise lines have a key card that doubles as your room key and a charging card. What this means is that you have to have it with you at all times.

This is changing on some cruise lines such as Princess which has the wearable Medallion and no key cards at all on their ship. Disney Cruise Line is also introducing the Magic Band system to the ships.

However, for most cruise lines you will have a key card that you have to carry around somehow.

You will probably find that a lanyard is the easiest way to keep this safe and accessible. I have also found that a Waterproof phone lanyard case is a good, inexpensive solution. This doubles up as a place to keep your phone as well, and it is fine to have it around, or even in the pool with you.

Niveaya Double Space Waterproof Phone Pouch - 2 Pack, Waterproof Phone Lanyard Case with iPhone 15/14/13/12 Pro Max/Pro/8 Plus, Galaxy S22/S21/S20/S10/Note 20/10/9 up to 7

One of the real joys of cruising is being able to relax and take some time to yourself. One of the things I love to do is read. However, I certainly don’t want to take a whole library of books with me,

Some cruise ships do have libraries, however, this isn’t the norm.

So the easiest way to bring thousands of books with you is to bring your Kindle.

How To Choose The Best Cruise Luggage For Really Easy Family Travel

By: Author Elaine Warren

Cruising with your family can be a lot of fun, but it’s important to make sure you have the right luggage for the trip. Luggage can be expensive, and you don’t want to waste your money on pieces that won’t hold up, that are too heavy to carry, or that are too large to fit in your stateroom comfortably.

cruise bag designs

Here are some tips on choosing the best cruise luggage for your family. By following our guide, we’ll help you find pieces that are durable, lightweight, and work well for cruise ship travel. (We also provide some specific recommendations in the last section!)

Best Cruise Luggage: Factors To Consider When Choosing

When it comes to packing for a family cruise, the options can seem endless. But when it comes to choosing the best luggage for a cruise, there are a few key factors to keep in mind. Durability, weight, size, and internal storage space are all important considerations, but so is price. You don’t want to break the bank on luggage, but you also want pieces that will last and hold up well during your trip.

Beyond that, think about your specific itinerary and what type of luggage will be most convenient for you. If you’re traveling to a tropical destination, for example, you’ll likely want something lightweight and beach-friendly that can hold all of your swimwear and sandals. If you’re going on an Alaskan cruise, you might need something to protect your sweaters and rain jackets and that’s large enough to handle bulky clothes. You’ll also want to consider what you will be wearing in the evening on your cruise .

cruise bag designs

Ask yourself what you’ll be bringing to get a sense of how much space you’ll need, and reference the cabin size before making your purchase so you don’t end up with luggage that’s too big for your stateroom.

An important consideration when choosing luggage for a cruise is durability . If your travel involves multiple legs, it will be handled by a wide range of people on many occasions and circumstances. At airports, cabs, hotels, and cruise terminals.

If possible, try to choose pieces that will withstand being dropped or knocked around by baggage handlers. Also, something that will still look decent after your trip is done. Rather than stained, dented, and scratched.

cruise bag designs

Consider the weight of your luggage. The lighter your luggage, the easier it will be to carry.

Heavier bags will cause your shoulders and neck to fatigue more quickly, which can be especially problematic if you’re doing a lot of walking during your trip.

Also, if you’re flying as part of your travels, the heavier the bag, the fewer items you will be able to pack without incurring additional charges on your checked bags .

Storage space

When deciding how much storage space to get in luggage that you plan to take on a cruise, consider the length of your trip, how much you plan to pack, and the climate of your destination. Another factor is the size of your items. Bulky items will take up more space than small items. If you have a lot of bulky items, you’ll need a bigger bag with more storage space.  Eg., beach packing vs Alaska packing .

If you’re going on a short trip, you can get away with a smaller bag. But if you’re going away for an extended period of time or traveling to a colder climate, you’ll need to pack a larger volume of clothing and accessories.

Ultimately, it’s important to choose a bag that’s big enough to fit everything you need but not too big or heavy that it becomes cumbersome to transport. Check out our guide on what to pack for a cruise .

cruise bag designs

Most cruises last a week or more, which means you will need to pack enough clothing and toiletries for the duration of your trip. You’ll also want to consider what activities or excursions you plan on doing while on your cruise.

You might think that you won’t need as many clothes on your cruise because it is mostly spent at sea, but the reality could be quite different. You will likely be changing more than once a day (for at least some if not all of your cruise days). Even if most days are lazy hours by the beach or pool, you’ll still find yourself donning fresh threads each evening, either for dinner or some other fun nightlife activity.

Maneuverability

For ease of use, consider purchasing luggage that has wheels or bags that can be carried using an adjustable shoulder strap. This will make it easier to navigate airports and cruise ships when you’re juggling other items like passports, carry-on baggage, travel documents, and kids.

Interior organization

To make unpacking easier, choose pieces of luggage that have mesh dividers in their compartments. This allows you to keep your items separated and easier to find.

Affordability

Another factor to consider is how much it costs.

Often times low-cost suitcases don’t have many of the features that high-end ones do, like self-repairing zippers or sturdy wheels that can handle bumpy roads or cobblestone streets. However, there are some inexpensive options out there that will get the job done without damaging your wallet too badly. Shop around until you find one that fits your needs. And check out our specific recommendations below.

What Kind of Luggage Is Best For a Cruise?

For our family cruises, we have found the following types of luggage to be the most useful: suitcases, duffel bags, garment bags, carry-on bags, and something specifically designated for port travel. Let’s take a closer look at each of these.

Suitcases are typically the centerpiece of your luggage choices. Broadly, there are two key distinguishing factors among suitcases: (1) wheels vs no wheels; and (2) hardside vs. softside.

Wheels vs No Wheels

It’s strongly recommended that you get suitcases with wheels. This feature will make it significantly easier to manage your luggage through airports, hotels, and cruise ship terminals.

There are a few reasons why the best suitcases for cruises have wheels. It’s much easier to navigate through airports and onboard the ship with a roller bag than it is to carry a suitcase. Likewise, it’s much more comfortable to walk long distances with a roller bag than it is to carry a heavy suitcase.

That said, rolling luggage is typically more expensive than luggage without wheels. And, sadly, sometimes wheels break off during travel, which then makes them very awkward to drag around.

Types of Wheels

When it comes to rolling luggage, you have two options – regular wheels and spinner wheels.

The main difference between wheeled luggage and spinner luggage is that spinner luggage can rotate 360 degrees, whereas regular wheeled luggage cannot. This is a major advantage because it means that you can easily move spinner luggage in any direction, even when it’s full. And this makes it much easier to navigate around corners and obstacles.

Also, wheeled luggage is great for smooth surfaces like airport walkways and hotel hallways but can be a bit difficult to maneuver on uneven surfaces or cobblestones.

Hardside vs Softside

Hardside luggage : This type of luggage is durable and scratch-resistant, making it ideal for cruises. It typically comes with a TSA lock, which keeps your belongings safe and secure.

There are pros and cons to using hardside luggage for cruise travel. On the pro side, hardside luggage is generally more durable and can better protect your belongings than softside luggage. It can withstand more wear and tear. It’s also less likely to get damaged during transit, either by being thrown around or by having items stacked on top of it.

Hardside suitcases also provide a bit more stability than soft sides, so your belongings are less likely to move around inside the suitcase during transport. Additionally, hardside luggage tends to be easier to keep clean than softside luggage.

On the con side, some people find that hardside luggage is more difficult to pack into tight spaces than softside luggage. It typically does not have outside pockets for storing small travel items. It also typically weighs more out of the box which can be an issue if you’re concerned about overall luggage weight limits.

Softside luggage is able to conform to the odd shapes of cruise ship cabins, maximizing storage space. But a soft-sided bag won’t offer as much protection against knocks and bumps as a hard one will. The fabric on some softer bags can be damaged more easily than that on harder cases. And it can get ripped or stained.

Duffel Bags

A rolling duffel bag is a great piece of cruise luggage.

We always take a rolling duffel bag on a cruise along with suitcase(s). We have found that having at least one piece of luggage be a wheeled duffel helps make better use of the space under the bed. Because the duffel is typically much narrower, it can easily fit alongside another regular suitcase. Or, in the instances where the cabin attendant has stored stuff under the bed, it can easily share space with that as well.

Duffel bags are roomy and flexible so that you can fit more stuff in there than a regular suitcase. Plus, they offer plenty of organizational options via side sections and exterior pockets.

Best Cruise Luggage | older model High Sierra drop bottom duffel

Key factors to look for in a rolling duffel?

Size: It should be big enough to hold lots of stuff but not so big as to trigger oversize luggage charges. Structure: You want one with some built-in organization with easy-to-access compartments.

Over the years, our favorite duffels have been the drop bottom duffels with a U-shaped opening and several exterior storage compartments.

A drop-bottom duffel is a great option for cruise packing. The top compartment can be opened up like a traditional duffel, while the bottom suitcase-like opening has its own flexible divider that separates it from what’s inside your other luggage.

Duffel bags are versatile and can be used for both checked and carry-on baggage. They are typically lightweight and affordable.

Garment Bags

If you plan to participate in formal nights or otherwise dress up for dinner at times, then a rolling garment bag will be a great selection for your cruise luggage.

A rolling garment bag is designed specifically for hanging clothes, so they won’t get wrinkled during travel like they would be folded up in a suitcase. And if you need to pack extra items, such as shoes or accessories, larger garment bags come with extra compartments for ample storage.

If you get a large one, you should be able to pack all of your family’s dressy clothes in the same bag. The one we use can hold clothes for two formal nights, including accessories.

Carry-on Bags

You’ll want to pack a “carry-on” bag even if you’re not traveling by plane.

Ideally, you will pack a carry-on bag that can do double duty as a cruise bag for embarkation day . That’s a small day bag with some key items that will tide you over as you’re waiting for your luggage to arrive at your cabin. That’s also where you would store valuables and medications. (Check out our other useful embarkation tips! ).

Look for a bag with several compartments or pockets that will make it easier for you to stay organized. The exterior should feature some type of scratch-resistant material, such as nylon, which keeps marks from appearing when rubbed against other pieces of luggage in transit. Many carry-ons feature wheels for easy transport between the airport and ship docks.

Luggage for Port (A Day Bag)

Assuming you plan to leave the ship and engage in some activities in port, you will need a day bag. If you are traveling with kids, it’s a good idea to have a family day bag. Although different family members may have personal items that they cart around themselves, one primary can house all of your family essentials for your day in port . For instance, items like towels, sunscreen, water, snacks, etc.

It doesn’t necessarily mean one person carries it around all day; it can be a shared responsibility. But the benefit of having one primary consolidated bag is that it makes it easier to make sure that you have all the key items that you need for the day in one place.

The type of bag doesn’t really matter. It just needs to be big enough to hold everything that you need. If you are going to the beach, a big beach-style tote works nicely. If you have a city day plan, a backpack-style bag may be easier and more efficient. And there are also hybrids between the two styles.

What Size Luggage Should You Bring?

You probably know that cruise cabins have limited space. Whatever luggage you bring with you will need to be capable of being stored in your cabin. So keep the size of your cabin in mind when it comes to choosing the perfect suitcase for cruising.

Ideally, you will be able to nest some pieces of luggage inside others, for instance, if one is smaller in size than another or can be squished into a larger piece because it’s flexible/soft. You can buy luggage sets that have been specifically designed to nest.

In terms of actually storing your luggage in your cabin, the best luggage for cruise ships are pieces that can be stored in a location where they are not taking up valuable floor space or closet space. So, ideally, it will fit under the bed.

Recommendations for the Best Cruise Luggage

Hardside suitcases, samsonite centric 2 hardside expandable luggage.

Samsonite Centric 2 Hardside Expandable Luggage

View on Amazon

Samsonite Centric Hardside Expandable Luggage is our top pick for the best suitcases for a cruise. We think that either the Centric or the Centric 2 would make a good choice because the differences between them are extremely minor. (The most significant difference is that the carry-on in the Centric 2 line has a built-in power outlet.)

These suitcases feature a scratch-resistant polycarbonate shell, four multi-directional spinner wheels, and a full-zip interior divider and cross straps to help you stay organized.

Not to mention, it also has generous expansion capability for when you need more space for purchases, souvenirs, or other clothes. And this suitcase comes with cleverly designed side-mounted TSA locks to help deter theft.

Best Cruise Luggage | photo of Samsonite Centric 2 in expanded position

These suitcases come in a range of distinctive colors. We chose Caribbean Blue for our personal collection.

Notably, Samsonite Centric hardside luggage sets have been well-reviewed by cruise passengers . Based on our recent personal experience, we agree with the consensus view of our fellow cruise travelers:

  • Very lightweight – all of our suitcases were filled without ever triggering airline overcharges.
  • Wheels roll exceptionally well, even on the carpet. These suitcases don’t require any significant force to push. My youngest child was able to maneuver it with ease. And I was able to roll two large suitcases with one hand (held back to back) – for an extended trek through the airport.
  • These pieces nest together inside the largest suitcase, which fits easily under the cabin bed.

The best cruise luggage will fit easily under the bed in your stateroom.

2023 Note : We have now had this particular set for about two years and have used it for both cruise and non-cruise vacations. These pieces have been quite durable. All the wheels and handles still work perfectly, and the outsides have remained free of scratches and dings!

Samsonite Omni PC Hardside Expandable Luggage

Samsonite Omni PC Hardside Expandable Luggage

This luggage set is quite similar to the Centric and Centric 2 luggage, except that it has a strikingly different visual design and is usually a little cheaper. Like the Centric cases discussed above, the Samsonite Omni is constructed from scratch-resistant polycarbonate material, has four multi-directional spinner wheels, a mesh divider and cross straps, and the same TSA side-mounted locks.

All of the suitcases in this set are also expandable and come with push-button telescopic handles.

This luggage set is also very popular with cruise travelers. It receives dozens of rave reviews from veteran cruisers .

Of particular note, the Omni 2 suitcases receive high marks for being lightweight, their ease of maneuverability, interior organization, and those nifty TSA locks.

Amazon Basics 3-Piece Set Hardside Spinner

Amazon Basics Hardside Spinner Luggage

The price of the AmazonBasics 3-Piece Set Hardside Luggage may initially give one pause. The cost of the entire set is less than the price for a single suitcase in many luggage lines. But this luggage definitely gets the job done at a value price.

The extra-thick ABS hardshell and scratch-resistant black finish keep your items safe, while the four double spinner wheels provide 360° of smooth-rolling movement in any direction, making it easy to navigate through crowded airports or busy streets.

AmazonBasics Luggage for Cruise

The sturdy telescoping handle ensures comfortable maneuvering, while the securely mounted short handle provides an easy grab-and-go option when you’re in a hurry. And when you need a little more packing space, the luggage expands by up to 15%.

This economical purchase has simple and limited organization. The most significant drawback is the side with the straps.  Basically, the gaps between the straps are too wide and the straps themselves are too flexible. If you open the suitcase from the wrong side – which is inevitable because there is no easy way to tell which side is up – many of the items will fall out.  Since we always use packing cubes, this hasn’t been a true disaster, but it can get annoying.

cruise bag designs

We have found that our AmazonBasics luggage has held up very well over time, and it offers great value. This is also a set that’s highly rated by cruise passengers .

The highlights of this luggage set:

  • The set nests well. Each piece fits inside of the other.
  • The wheel roll smoothly and you can easily transition back and forth between using two and four wheels.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size luggage is best for a cruise.

The best place to store your luggage in your cruise cabin is under the bed, so you want luggage pieces that will fit there. Typically, if your suitcase is less than 13 inches in height, it should fit. This will accommodate your average large suitcase (28″-30″).

Do cruise ships XRAY your luggage?

Yes. All luggage that comes aboard a cruise ship – whether carry-on or checked – will be scanned. Your carry-on items will be scanned through an x-ray machine similar to what you find at the airport.

Do Cruise Lines search your luggage?

It depends. All luggage will be scanned. If something draws attention, then those individual pieces may be searched by security personnel. Any contraband items discovered will be confiscated (e.g., alcohol, firearms). Depending on the individual cruise line’s policy, some confiscated items may be held by security and returned to you at the conclusion of your cruise.

Closing Thoughts

The best cruise luggage will be lightweight, large enough to hold all of your belongings, and durable enough to sustain being handled by numerous people. FAQ: 8 Tavel Bags and Luggage to Bring on a Cruise in 2023

Here are answers to some common questions about types of travel bags and luggage to bring on a cruise in 2023.

How much luggage should I bring on a cruise?

The amount of luggage you can bring a on cruse depends on several factors.

  • Check Cruise Line Policies: Start by checking the specific luggage policies of your chosen cruise line. Most cruise lines have guidelines on the number and size of suitcases or bags allowed per passenger.
  • Cruise Duration: Consider the length of your cruise. For shorter cruises (3-5 days), one or two medium-sized suitcases may suffice. Longer cruises may require additional luggage to accommodate clothing and personal items for the duration of your trip.
  • Climate and Destinations: Think about the weather at your cruise destinations. If you’re visiting multiple climates, you may need a variety of clothing, which could impact your luggage needs.
  • Onboard Activities: Consider the activities you plan to engage in during the cruise. If you have formal nights or plan to work out, pack accordingly. Some activities may require specific clothing or equipment.
  • Cabin Space: Remember that cruise cabins are typically compact, so you’ll want to ensure your luggage can be stored comfortably in your cabin. Under-bed storage or closet space can be utilized for this purpose.
  • Travel Needs: Besides clothing, consider essentials like toiletries, medications, travel documents, and any specific items like snorkeling gear or formal attire for special events.
  • Laundry Services: Many cruise ships offer laundry services, so you can pack lighter and plan to do some laundry during your voyage.

In general, it’s recommended to pack efficiently, choosing versatile clothing items and coordinating outfits to make the most of the space available. Ultimately, the amount of luggage you bring on a cruise should be tailored to your individual preferences and the specific requirements of your trip.

Can I ship my luggage to and from my cruise?

Yes, you can ship your luggage to and from your cruise, and it can be a convenient option for many travelers. Here are some important details to consider:

1. Shipping Services: Several companies and services specialize in shipping luggage to and from cruise ports. They typically offer door-to-port and port-to-door services, meaning they can pick up your luggage from your home or a designated location and deliver it directly to your cruise ship or vice versa.

2. Convenience: Luggage shipping can be particularly helpful if you have large, heavy bags, or if you’re traveling long distances to your cruise departure point. It can save you from the hassle of lugging your luggage through airports and to the cruise terminal.

3. Timing: When shipping your luggage, it’s crucial to plan well in advance. Be sure to coordinate the pick-up and delivery schedule with your cruise departure and return dates. It’s recommended to allow sufficient time for your luggage to reach the destination before your cruise.

4. Cost: While luggage shipping can offer convenience, it often comes at an additional cost. Make sure to inquire about the pricing and any potential fees associated with this service when booking.

5. Luggage Insurance: Confirm whether the shipping service provides insurance for your luggage in case of loss or damage during transit. It’s advisable to purchase additional insurance if necessary.

6. Check Cruise Line Policies: Always check with your cruise line to understand their specific procedures and any requirements related to shipping luggage. Different cruise lines may have varying rules and recommendations.

7. Documentation: Ensure that your luggage is properly labeled and includes all the necessary cruise documents and identification tags to avoid any complications during boarding.

In summary, shipping your luggage to and from your cruise can be a practical option for those looking to streamline their travel experience. It can save you time and effort, especially when dealing with large or bulky items. However, it’s important to plan ahead, understand the costs involved, and coordinate the process carefully to ensure your luggage arrives on time for your cruise.

Are steamer trunks a good thing to bring on a cruise?

While steamer trunks possess a certain vintage charm, they may not be the most practical choice for modern cruise vacations. Here are a few factors to consider when deciding whether to bring a steamer trunk:

  • Size and Weight: Steamer trunks are typically large and heavy, which can be a drawback when dealing with airline weight restrictions or limited cabin storage space on cruise ships. Modern luggage options often prioritize lightweight designs and ease of handling.
  • Mobility: Maneuvering a heavy steamer trunk can be challenging, especially in crowded port areas, narrow cabin hallways, and when boarding or disembarking from the ship. Smaller, wheeled suitcases or travel bags offer greater mobility.
  • Storage in Cabins: Cruise ship cabins are designed to accommodate more compact luggage. Steamer trunks may not fit comfortably under the bed or in the available closet space. Check with your cruise line to ensure your trunk will fit in the cabin.
  • Packing Efficiency: Steamer trunks don’t typically offer the same level of organization and compartmentalization as modern luggage options, which can make it harder to keep your belongings neat and accessible.
  • Versatility: Cruise vacations often involve various activities, both on and off the ship. Modern luggage types, such as carry-on bags and backpacks, can be more versatile for excursions, day trips, and onshore adventures.

That said, if you’re a collector or enthusiast, and you have a particular fondness for vintage luggage, you can bring a steamer trunk for its aesthetic appeal and historical charm. Just be prepared for some logistical challenges and consider using it as a decorative element in your cabin rather than relying on it for practical storage.

In most cases, travelers find that modern luggage options, which prioritize convenience, organization, and portability, are better suited for the demands of contemporary cruise vacations.

If you think luggage is just luggage, no matter where you’re going or what kind of trip you’re taking, it might be time to think again. Especially when it comes to cruising, there are some things to think about regarding your luggage that you don’t need to consider when flying, driving, or taking the train.

The main issue is the space inside most cabins. Anyone who’s been on a cruise knows cabins can be a little on the snug side and you might not have much space to store your luggage. Then there’s the fact that you’ll be spending many of your days on land excursions and you’ll need a suitable bag for the whole day. I’ve taken a look at the best luggage items to take on a cruise, from backpacks for a land excursion to check-in suitcases, and everything in between.

Briggs & Riley Sympatico Medium Expandable Spinner

Perfect for a 7- or 10-day cruise, the Medium Expandable Spinner has some brilliant organizational features. There’s a large zip-around pocket inside, plus two smaller mesh pockets, that make packing much easier. I love how lightweight this case is. It’s nice and spacious and a good size for a cruise, but it’s really easy to maneuver and doesn’t feel cumbersome at all. It glides around on its double-spinner wheels and I found it easy to travel with, even to wheel around an airport and get from taxi to port. It also looks really smart and has a leather personalized patch where you can have your initials monogrammed, so you always know it’s your case.

Favorite Features

  • TSA-friendly combination lock
  • Adjustable garment compression panels to keep clothing flat
  • Expansion and compression system that can increase space by 17 percent
  • Strong and durable shell

A combination between a carry-on case and a durable bag, the Craghopper Wheelie is perfect for anyone who travels light and for day excursions on land. It’s spacious inside and has two front-zipped compartments that are perfect for a laptop and a tablet. This carry-on is especially great for a cruise as the soft material and shell mean it can be easily stored in your cabin. You can store it with other items on top of it as the fabric and shell provide space for stacking. I love how it looks like a backpack but behaves like a small suitcase.

  • Water-repellent
  • Padding throughout to protect your items
  • Internal organizer pockets
  • Cut-resistant safety pocket with RFID protection

cruise bag designs

As it suggests in the name, the Away Flex Suitcase is very flexible. When you unzip the flex feature, it creates an extra 2.25 inches of space, so it’s perfect for leaving room for bringing home souvenirs. Without the flex, it’s a carry-on, and with the flex, it’s a checked case. If you take a larger flex case and the carry-on, you can nest one inside the other in your cabin to save space. What I really love about this case is the little details they’ve added. There’s a handle on the bottom of the case, between the wheels. It might seem like a strange place for a handle, but when you’re at the baggage carousel and you need to pick up your case quickly, it comes in very handy.

  • TSA-approved combination lock
  • Hidden laundry bag to keep dirty clothes separate
  • Durable hardshell
  • Black leather luggage tag

cruise bag designs

The Nomatic Travel Pack is a backpack that packs like a suitcase. If you like to travel light and your cruise is fairly short, you can pack all your items in this pack and carry it like any backpack. It’s a slim and sleek bag, but it’s deceptively spacious inside and expands when you need to fit more in. It has water-bottle holders on each side, like a backpack, but inside it has zip-up sections for packing clothes and a large pocket for shoes or a laptop. If you can pack this light, it’s ideal for a cruise as it doubles as a lightweight backpack for land excursions.

  • Water-resistant
  • Sunglasses case
  • Magnetic water-bottle pockets
  • Side handle to carry like a briefcase

cruise bag designs

If you have checked-in luggage, which you probably do for a cruise, this Metro Duffle Bag is a spacious and versatile carry-on bag that works perfectly as a day bag for land excursions. You can travel with it if you’re flying to your port destination and it fits a whole world of items inside it. You can easily get a laptop in the bag and it has lots of great zip compartments and pockets for your passport, water bottle, and even your umbrella if you think you’ll need it. What I really love is the switch system. The bag comes with a metro kit, where you can fit lots of small items, and this attaches and detaches for when you want to take it with you and when you don’t.

  • Trolley sleeve that fits around your suitcase handle and keeps all your luggage together
  • Vegan leather
  • Adjustable, removable shoulder strap

cruise bag designs

Take it right back to the golden age of glamor travel with this classic-looking trunk . It is definitely the most-spacious luggage on the list and also the most beautiful in design. It’s inspired by the original steamer trunks that were made for the cabins on steamer ships, but unlike classic trunks, this one has four wheels and is easy to move around. It is large, yes, but that means you can pack a lot into it. If you’re lucky enough to have booked a suite on a cruise, you won’t have any trouble storing this trunk. Otherwise, it doubles nicely as a little stand or table.

  • Leather corners and straps to protect the trunk
  • 100-liter capacity
  • Carbon-steel locks
  • Each individual case has its own unique serial number.

Sailing’s a Breeze With The Best Luggage for a Cruise

Posted on Published: 03/05/2024

Cruises can be an effortless vacation for families. Once you are onboard, you’ll already have much of your entertainment, meals, and other vacation plans settled.

The family-friendly lines offer kids’ programming, including kids’ clubs and amenities, so you’ll probably even have some free time during your vacation.

Packing, however, is extremely important. You’ll have limited access to shops to purchase things you may need.

But, cruise staterooms are also notoriously small, so you’ll want to be efficient with what you bring. The luggage you bring on the cruise is important because the bags do get handled quite a bit. You’ll want to make sure you can pack effectively, still leaving some space in your bag.

There are loads of good options for luggage, at varying price points. The best luggage for a cruise will depend on several factors.

This post will help you figure out the best luggage for your vacation, including information about the different types of luggage that you’ll need for your trip.

Make Sailing a Breeze With the Best Luggage for a Cruise Vacation

Want to skip the tips and go right to our favorite luggage? Our favorites are Away, Hideo Wakamatsu, and Beis.

Here are some factors you’ll need to consider before deciding which luggage to bring on your cruise . Keep in mind that all of our tips will also apply to other vacations as well – so your purchase will last well beyond your cruise. The best luggage for cruises can also be used for other vacations.

When sailing on a cruise, all of the cruise terminals offer the opportunity for you to drop your luggage off with a porter before sailing. These pieces of luggage are delivered to the cruise cabins later in the day.

The porters at the cruise terminal aren’t cruise line employees, so be sure to have tip money available. You can also carry your own luggage on board, but that can be very inconvenient.

If your cruise line provides you with luggage tags, put them on before you sail, but after you fly. Some cruise lines, like Royal Caribbean, let you print your own tags. We like these plastic luggage tag holders which can keep your luggage tags secure to your bag .

Length of Cruise

We’ve been on many cruises – from quick two-night sailings to a 7-day cruise. What you need to bring with you will vary dramatically for a longer sailing.

When taking a short cruise, you’ll be able to carry your luggage on yourself – limiting how much handling your bag gets. You’ll still want to make sure your bag is easy to carry around – because your stateroom may not be ready the minute you board the ship.

Takeaway: The shorter the cruise, the less concern about the quality of the bag.

How You Are Getting There

Because I like to fly to the Caribbean and typically sail out of Florida, I need to fly in for my cruise vacation. Flying in for a cruise can be stressful. With flight delays and potential weather concerns, you’ll want to ensure you arrive with plenty of time.

Most cruise experts recommend arriving at least the night before your cruise. On our post-Christmas cruise, our checked bags didn’t make it onto our flight.

Because we arrived the day before, we were luckily able to get the bags the next morning. It made for a stressful 12 hours.

If you are flying, I highly recommend packing carry-on bags with lots of essentials. At a minimum, you’ll want enough underwear and outfits for a day or two, as well as a swimsuit (for a Caribbean vacation).

That way, you’ll at least have some clothing in case your bags go missing, as ours did. For this purpose, I pack roller bag carry-ons, rather than duffel bags.

Takeaway: If you are flying, have some larger carry-ons filled with essentials.

Where To Store Your Bags

Staterooms are often small, so you’ll want to make sure you have enough room in your cabin to store your empty bags. While some cruise guests prefer to live out of their suitcases, I like to fully unpack.

One of the first things I do is unpack, and then I store my bags under the bed in the room. Storage space can sometimes be limited, so keeping the bags out of the way during your trip is best.

Takeaway: Don’t pack more bags than you can easily store in your room

Luggage Price

You’ll find luggage in almost any general merchandise store you visit – from mass merchandisers and department stores to off-price retailers. If you want to use your luggage for multiple trips, I highly recommend splurging on a high-quality luggage set.

We’ve all seen broken bags on the luggage carousel. From torn and busted zips to broken handles, damaged luggage can put a damper on the start of your family cruise. While purchasing a more expensive bag isn’t a guarantee that something won’t happen, those bags often have warranties and are less likely to break.

Takeaway: You’ll get more long-term value with an investment in high-quality luggage, but cheaper, more affordable options are available.

Bag Features

Regardless of whether you choose a pricey bag or a more affordable option, you’ll want to consider the different luggage features available.

Wheels: I prefer 360-degree spinner wheels, so the bag can be easily moved in either direction. Cruise ships also typically have lots of carpeting, so a roller bag with spinner wheels is easier to pull or push.

Hard-sided: Soft-sided bags can be more easily stuffed, but hard-shelled bags are more sturdy. It can also be easier to compress items in these bags.

Expandable: While an expandable bag can be useful, keep in mind that when expanding it you may make it too large to be a carry-on.

Colors: Almost every bag on the luggage carousel is black, making it difficult to identify your specific bag. Purchase a unique color, and you’ll be easily able to find your bag as soon as it comes out.

There are other features you may want to have, including a water-resistant material, a lock, and an interior or exterior pocket for easy access to travel documents and other essentials.

Takeaway: Consider the features you may want before purchasing. For a cruise, the type of wheels can be important.

Two pink suitcases

Checked Baggage

When you arrive for your cruise, you can give the porter any luggage that you’d like to check-in. This may or may not be the same as the checked bags that you give the airlines. Cruises don’t have the same liquid carry-on bag restrictions.

Keep in mind, however, that you will need to carry any luggage that you don’t check along with you until your cruise ship stateroom is ready.

When you are done with your cruise, you can also have your luggage taken directly off the ship and to the port. Typically, you’ll need to pack and leave your bags out at night. Crew members take them from outside your stateroom and deliver them to the port.

We have two favorite larger suitcases that are great for checked luggage.

Hideo Wakamatsu: This line offers a soft-sided bag that can really be stuffed. It’s water-resistant and lightweight. It doesn’t have spinner wheels, however. I’ve had this bag for years and love it, but the color I have – blue – is no longer available.

Away: One of the most popular luggage brands is Away, and for good reason. It’s a hard-shell suitcase but has really great spinner wheels making it easy to wheel around an airport.

Carry-On Bag

I almost always bring a wheeled carry-on bag with me, even when I check luggage. That way, I have some clothes in case my luggage is delayed. However, I always check this bag at the port so I don’t have to drag it around as I start to explore the ship.

Recommendations: I recommend the counterparts to the checked bags listed above . While there are different sizes, I really like the “bigger carry-on” size of the Away bag – it holds a ton of stuff with a compression pad and is the perfect size as a carry-on.

In addition, I also love the luggage line from Beis. They offer stylish and functional bags, and their Weekender is one of my favorite versatile personal items.

Garment Bag

While some cruise lines have formal nights with a formal dress code (where you’ll need to get very dressed up), the trend seems to be toward more casual cruising. In general, I’d only recommend a garment bag if you need one because they aren’t very versatile.

As an alternative, Away offers a garment sleeve, which can be used in the bigger carry-on. That can be a great option without adding a separate piece of baggage to your allowance.

Because you won’t receive your checked baggage until later in the day, you’ll want to have a day bag packed with essentials. I include my important documents, electronic devices, sunscreen, valuables, medication, chargers, and anything else I need for the first day. Some people choose to pack swimsuits so their kids can go right to the pool, and you may also want a change of clothes.

You’ll want to make sure anything important is in this bag, but won’t want it to be too heavy. To save space, I usually use my beach bag (if I have a beach day as part of my planned shore excursions) as my day bag. Just keep in mind that a tote bag can get heavy.

My favorite beach bag is by Aloha Collection , which can be purchased on Amazon. They also have great pouches to hold your essentials and can be used for packing your wet bathing suit when you go home.

To stay organized, I’d recommend using packing cubes . These are especially useful if you are staying at a hotel the night before your cruise. You can pack the items you need for this first day separately from the other items for your cruise.

The Amazon basics brand is a great choice. There are many different colors offered, so you can get a different color for each member of your family. That way, you can use them for the entire family and stay organized.

Toiletry bag

A toiletry bag is a travel essential. It will keep everything clean and separate from your clothes and can be easily moved from your suitcase to the stateroom bathroom. If you are a frequent traveler, you may want to keep a stocked toiletry bag ready to go for any trip. Just check it before you go to make sure there is enough of each product and that nothing is expired.

Airtag in blue holder on blue suitcase

If you use an iPhone, AirTags can be a great way to keep track of your baggage. This post offers some essential information for using an AirTag on your luggage . It’s a good idea to have them on your bags to keep track of them during your flight and on embarkation day.

You’ve booked the flight, scouted the hotel, and assembled a packing list of your very best vacation-ready essentials . But what to put them in? A sleek, stylish travel bag that complements your OOO aesthetic is among the most important investments for those with a penchant for stylish escapes.

The season’s very best options check off all the boxes of a luxuriously crafted bag that can weather even the most far-flung adventures. Saint Laurent’s giant quilted duffle remains a celebrity favorite (Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Olivia Wilde are fans), and Prada’s geometric-pattern trunk will feel exquisite slung over your shoulder en route to somewhere beautiful. And there’s no denying the enduring appeal of The Row’s sleek, streamlined black leather tote bag.

If you’re heading somewhere close to home, an oversized tote might feel more appropriate—we love Totême’s leather-trimmed canvas option for this. And for a budget-friendly pick, Alex Mill’s vintage-inspired canvas bag (aptly named ‘the perfect weekend tote’) is always a favorite. From luxe leather duffels to timeless utilitarian silhouettes, shop 28 of the season’s best travel bags ahead.

Ultimate Cruise Gift Ideas Guide for 2024

Are you looking for cruise gift ideas for someone who loves cruising? My updated 2024 cruise gift ideas guide includes everything a cruiser needs to enjoy their vacation.

cruise bag designs

Do you have a friend or family member who is going on their very first cruise, and you’d like to choose a special cruise present or even make a cruise gift basket for them?

In this post, I’m including cruise gifts for every budget . From small stocking stuffers to splurge cruise gifts for someone you love, all the perfect cruise gift ideas are right here for you.

My hand-picked cruise gift basket suggestions are at the bottom, so be sure to read all the way through!

Cruise gifts under $25

Looking for inexpensive cruise gifts for a small birthday present, secret Santa gift, or cruise stocking stuffer? All of these cruise gifts are small enough to fit in a small space, but can make anyone’s cruise so much more enjoyable.

Magnetic hooks

Did you know that cruise stateroom walls are made of metal? These strong magnetic hooks can hold everything from hats and jackets to bags. They’re a great way to keep a cruise cabin neat when there’s limited storage.

GREATMAG Magnetic Hooks Heavy Duty, 100 lbs Strong Hooks for Hanging, Magnet with Hook for Cruise, Grill, Fridge, Pack of 6

I like to use mine to hang damp swimsuits to dry when it’s inconvenient to use the clothesline in the shower. (Like when people need the shower for showering.)

Lounge chair towel clips

It can get windy up on the pool deck, so these lounge chair towel clips come in handy to keep towels in place. They also make it clear that your lounger is reserved when you take a dip in the pool or the hot tub.

ECROCY Beach Chair Towel Clips on Cruise, 8 Pack Large Clamps,Clothes Pegs,Beach Towel Holder to Keep Your Towel from Blowing Away,Heavy Duty and in Bright Colors

The clips are also great to take along on any beach-bound shore excursions.

Power strip with USB

Cruise staterooms never have enough power outlets! With all of the electronic devices that we need to keep charged, it can be a struggle to find a spot for everyone to plug in.

Cruise Power Strip No Surge Protector with USB Outlets - Ship Approved (Non Surge Protection) Cruise Essentials in 2024 & 2025 (White)

A non-surge protecting power strip will give your cruiser enough outlets and USB ports to keep everything powered up. Plus, it’s cruise-friendly! Surge protecting power strips are usually prohibited on cruise ships.

Stateroom bathrooms have no ventilation, so odors tend to permeate the entire cabin. Yuck. Poo-Pourri traps the odors in the toilet bowl before they have a chance to hit the air.

Poo-Pourri Before-You-Go Toilet Spray, Original Citrus, 2 Fl Oz - Lemon, Bergamot and Lemongrass

The travel-size pump spray is TSA friendly, and the non-toxic formula is made with essential oils and natural compounds.

Battery-operated night light

Cruise staterooms can be pitch-black at night, especially the inside staterooms. A battery-operated nightlight gives off just enough light to safely get to the bathroom without tripping over someone’s shoes.

ZEEFO Retro LED Night Light PIR Motion Sensor Light,Activated Step Lighting Lamps,Indoor/Outdoor Battery Operated Lamp Sensitive Portable Moving Table Lamp for Kids Room,Hallway(Round Shape)

I like the motion-sensor feature on this model (which can be switched on or off). Plus, it doesn’t take up a valuable electrical outlet, and can be placed on a nightstand or carried around.

Wrinkle release spray

Cruise lines prohibit passengers from carrying on irons or clothes steamers, so it can be difficult to keep clothing looking neat and pressed.

Downy Wrinkle Releaser Spray, All In One Formula, Removes Wrinkles, Static and Odors, Crisp Linen Scent, 33.8 Fl Oz, Pack of 2 + Travel Size Spray

Wrinkle release spray quickly removes wrinkles from most fabrics. Just hang the item, spray lightly, and tug out any wrinkles. Plus, it adds a light scent so it’s possible to re-wear things if there isn’t a laundry room for guests.

Waterproof luggage tag holders

Cruise lines require each piece of checked luggage to have one of their printed labels on it. They instruct passengers to fold the paper label and then use a stapler to attach it to suitcases and bags.

Highwind Cruise Luggage Tags for Suitcases | Compatible w/All Cruise Lines | E-tag Holders Zip Seal&Steel Loops | ID Badge | Waterproof Clear Cruise Tags (8pk, Clear)

A water-damaged tag (or one that falls off!) means that cruise line staff won’t know which room the bag belongs to. I use reusable waterproof luggage tag holders to protect my bag labels.

Make sure you pick the right style for the cruise line. The ones above will work for Princess, Carnival, Costa, Holland America, P&O, and Norwegian. Royal Caribbean and Celebrity have different size tags.

Pickpockets and thieves love it when a cruise ship comes into port. They often prey on unsuspecting tourists whose money and valuables aren’t secured.

DAITET Money Belt - Passport Holder Secure Hidden Travel Wallet with RFID Blocking, Undercover Fanny Pack (Black)

Help your cruiser avoid being a target by giving them a money belt . It’s not just useful for hiding cash! Their passport and smartphone can also fit inside.

This belt also includes RFID blocking technology which helps to prevent scammers from obtaining personal information from credit cards and IDs.

Collapsible water bottle

Single-use water can be expensive on cruise ships and in port, not to mention the environmental impact of all those plastic bottles.

Collapsible Water Bottles 2 pack Travel Water Bottle Portable Hiking Water Bottle with Leak proof Twist Cap 500ML Reusable BPA Free Silicone Water Bottles (Style1, Black+Purple)

Tap water on cruise ships is perfectly safe to drink. A collapsible water bottle is the perfect size to pack in a suitcase, and will save your cruiser money while out on shore excursions.

This two-pack is made of BPA-free food grade silicone and comes in a variety of colors, including some fun multicolor designs.

Packable shopping bags

Many cruise ports are shopping meccas, and a set of lightweight packable shopping bags can hold all those souvenirs—up to 50 pounds per bag! They fold down into a little pouch, the perfect size for tossing in a purse or beach bag.

BeeGreen Sea Turtle Gifts for Women Foldable Reusable Grocery Bags Shopping Bags for Groceries Cute Holiday Bags with Handles Large Cloth Gift Bags Heavy Duty Bulk 6 Pack Lightweight

The bags also do double-duty as laundry bags (I hang mine in the stateroom closet) or to keep shoes separate from clothing in a suitcase.

My smartphone gets quite a workout when we’re in port. Pulling up maps and directions, looking up restaurant reviews, and checking in at home often leaves me with a dead battery! A small power bank will charge it right back up.

Anker PowerCore 5,000mAh Portable Charger, Ultra-Compact 5K External Battery with Fast-Charging Technology, Power Bank for iPhone 15/15 Plus/15 Pro/15 Pro Max, iPad, Samsung Galaxy and More

It works to charge tablets as well. I make sure to bring mine on those long coach drives when the port is far away from the city destination. No more worries that reading or playing a game will drain the battery.

Reef-safe sunscreen

Did you know that most commercial sunscreens contain ingredients that can be harmful to marine life? Some chemical sunscreen ingredients like oxybenzone and octinoxate can kill coral and damage coral reef ecosystems.

Badger Reef Safe Sunscreen, SPF 40 Sport Mineral Sunscreen, 98% Organic Sunscreen Ingredients, Broad Spectrum, Water Resistant, Zinc Oxide Sunscreen, Unscented, 2.9 fl oz

Going without sunscreen is a dangerous idea when swimming or snorkeling, so if your cruiser will be in the water, get them some reef-safe sunscreen .

For a more high-end, skincare-based sunscreen option, read my MyCHELLE Dermaceuticals Reef Safe Sunscreen: An Honest Review

Waterproof phone pouch

Your cruiser can enjoy the ship’s pool or a shore excursion to the beach while keeping their phone handy and safe. These waterproof phone pouches come with a detachable neck strap and fit phones up to 6.8″ diagonal.

JOTO Waterproof Phone Pouch IPX8 Universal Waterproof Case Dry Bag Phone Protector for iPhone 15 14 13 12 11 Pro Max Plus XS XR X 8 Galaxy S23 S22 S21 S20 Pixel Up to 7' -2 Pack, Black

And yes, the touchscreen works through the clear plastic window. They can even be used to take photos underwater!

Over-the-door organizer

Give your cruiser the gift of more storage space in their stateroom. An over-the-door organizer can corral toiletries and accessories on the back of the bathroom door.

Cruise On Large Mesh Over Door Hanging Organizer 15 Pockets - White Cabin Organization Shoe Holder & Cruise Essentials Storage (24'x60')

This model is flame-retardant, as is required by some cruise lines. I keep the packaging with mine to prove to my stateroom steward that it meets the rules.

Note: Disney Cruise Line has banned over-the-door hooks because they might mar the finish of the doors.

Packing cubes

Organizing and packing a suitcase for a cruise is so much easier with packing cubes . I keep my items inside when I unpack, and just place them on the closet shelves or drawers. The see-through mesh makes it easy to see what’s inside each cube.

eBags Classic Medium 3 Piece Packing Cube Set (Aquamarine)

The gentle compression of the packing cubes also results in less-wrinkled clothing.

Travel Board Games

One of my favorite things to bring on a cruise is a travel-sized board game, like Tile Lock Scrabble . Its slightly smaller size makes it easy to pack, and the tiles won’t shift if the board is bumped – perfect for playing on the ship or on a plane.

A travel board game, or a fun card or dice game makes an inexpensive but appreciated gift for a friend, coworker, or family member that’s going on a cruise.

Tile Lock Scrabble,2 to 4 players

Cruise gift ideas for a holiday swap ($25-$50)

Lots of us participate in a holiday gift swap each year. Whether it’s a Secret Santa or Kris Kringle, or your family (like mine!) draws names for a gift swap, sometimes it’s tough to find just the right gift and still stay within the swap budget.

All the cruise gift ideas in this section are right in the price range of most gift swap budgets.

Travel safe

On the pool deck or at the beach, it’s never a good idea to leave valuables out where they can be stolen. This mini travel safe is roomy enough to hold money, jewelry, and most phones while swimming.

SAFEGO Portable Indoor/Outdoor Lock Box Safe with Key and Combination Access (Green)

It attaches easily to a lounge chair with a flexible metal strap. Your cruiser will love knowing that their valuables are secure while they’re enjoying the water.

Apple AirTag

If your cruiser has an iPhone, they’ll appreciate one of these handy little AirTag devices to keep track of their stuff when they travel.

Apple AirTag

I like to clip one inside each of my suitcases using an inexpensive silicone holder (much cheaper than the overpriced ones sold by Apple) to make sure my checked bags make it on the plane and then on the cruise ship!

Full-face snorkel mask

Does your cruiser enjoy snorkeling? Then they’ll love the 180° view they’ll experience with this full-face snorkel mask . The mask features adjustable straps, an easy drain valve, and anti-fog coating. It even has a GoPro mount to capture all of those underwater adventures!

ZIPOUTE Snorkel Mask Full Face, Full Face Snorkel Mask Adult and Kids with Detachable Camera Mount, Snorkeling Mask 180 Panoramic View Anti-Fog Anti-Leak Dry Top Set with Adjustable Straps(Black L/XL)

I’ve saved far more than I spent on my set by not having to rent snorkel equipment in port. Plus I feel better about not putting a germy rental snorkel in my mouth.

Mid-range gifts for cruisers ($50-$100)

Is your budget for your cruise gift a bit more generous, but you don’t want to completely splurge? I have plenty of ideas for cruise gifts in the $50-$100 range.

Anti-theft travel bag

Pickpockets love it when tourists are carrying bags that are easy to get into. An anti-theft travel bag will keep money and valuables safe from thieves. With locking clips on the zippers and slash-proof straps, this bag will prevent pickpockets from accessing its contents.

Travelon Anti-Theft Heritage Tote Bag, Pewter, One Size

I use mine as my cruise carry on bag for embarkation day, as well as for shore excursions.

Packable rain jacket

I used to take an ugly plastic poncho with me when I cruised, in case I was caught in the rain in port. I didn’t feel like taking a bulky raincoat. But plastic ponchos are ridiculously ugly.

Eddie Bauer Women's Packable Rainfoil Jacket, Waterproof, Deep Eggplant, X-Large

My favorite packable rain jacket folds into its own pocket, and doesn’t take up much room in a shore excursion bag. Much nicer looking than an ugly poncho! It also comes in men’s sizes here .

Is your gift recipient cruising to an area with lots of wildlife? On our recent cruise to Alaska , I was so thankful we had binoculars. From the deck of a cruise ship, what looked like tiny moving dots to the naked eye suddenly became a mama bear and her cub, or a pod of porpoises.

SkyGenius 10 x 50 Binoculars for Adults Powerful Full-Size, Clear Durable Binoculars for Bird Watching Sightseeing Wildlife Watching Traveling Stargazing with Low Light Night Vision

These full-size 10 x 50 binoculars feature low-light night vision for evening viewing, and have a shock-resistant, non-slip rubber coating.

A backpack for active shore excursions

Is hiking or a bike tour on your cruiser’s agenda? A quality backpack would be a much-appreciated gift. This 26-liter pack is the perfect size to fit all the essentials for an active shore excursion.

THE NORTH FACE Jester Everyday Laptop Backpack, Astro Lime AI Blossoms Print/TNF Black, One Size

A comfortable, functional backpack makes all the difference when taking an active shore excursion. Padded shoulder straps and a hip belt and sternum strap ensure that weight is distributed evenly.

Splurge gifts for cruisers ($100+)

Do you want to get something really great for a loved one who’s going on a cruise? These cruise gift ideas are a little more pricey, but your cruiser will love them!

Expandable hardside suitcase

Is your cruiser still using that beat-up suitcase from a high school trip abroad? Bring them into the modern era of travel with a new expandable hardside rollaboard .

Samsonite Omni PC Hardside Expandable Luggage with Spinner Wheels, Checked-Medium 24-Inch, Caribbean Blue

This sleek rollaboard is slim enough to easily slip under a cruise ship bed, but roomy enough to fit all the essentials. Plus it’s made of scratch-resistant polycarbonate, so it’ll stay beautiful trip after trip.

The 24″ suitcase comes in a range of eleven colors, and has over 17,000 five-star reviews on Amazon.

Noise-canceling Bluetooth headphones

Mr. SBC and I each have a pair of Beats Studio3 headphones , and we wouldn’t cruise (or fly on a plane!) without them. They pair easily with any smartphone or tablet, and the noise-canceling feature is amazing at blocking out crowd noise.

Beats Studio3 Wireless Noise Cancelling Over-Ear Headphones - Apple W1 Headphone Chip, Class 1 Bluetooth, 22 Hours of Listening Time, Built-in Microphone - Red

I love to use mine to listen to music on our balcony, or to listen to an audiobook while lounging on the pool deck. Throw in a subscription to Audible , and your cruiser will be all set to relax!

GoPro camera

The newest and best GoPro camera yet, the HERO12 Black is a fun gadget to take along on shore excursions! I love that it’s waterproof so I can use it to document my snorkeling adventures.

GoPro HERO12 Black - Waterproof Action Camera with 5.3K60 Ultra HD Video, 27MP Photos, HDR, 1/1.9' Image Sensor, Live Streaming, Webcam, Stabilization

A fun feature of the GoPro is its time-lapse video function. I like to set it up to record the view from my window or balcony while I’m having fun around the ship.

Tablet or e-reader

I think there’s nothing more relaxing than sitting by the pool and reading a book. But traveling with bulky paperbacks gets annoying, especially if you’re trying to pack light. An e-reader or tablet is a great gift for any book-loving cruiser.

Amazon Kindle Paperwhite (8 GB) – Now with a larger display, adjustable warm light, increased battery life, and faster page turns – Black

This new 8GB Kindle Paperwhite model is waterproof and glare-free, with an adjustable light—perfect for poolside or beach reading.

Wrapping it up

How can you make your cruise gift even more fun? Wrap it in a nautical theme! This gift wrap multi-pack includes a classic navy-and-white anchor wrapping paper, ship’s wheels, and a cute whale pattern.

WRAPAHOLIC Wrapping Paper Sheet - Nautical Anchors Blue Design for Birthday, Holiday, Wedding, Baby Shower - 1 Roll Contains 6 Sheets - 17.5 inch X 39.3 inch Per Sheet

Or maybe you despise wrapping gifts? I hear you. Gift bags are much faster and easier! Check out this cute anchor tissue paper that pairs well with blue and gold kraft paper gift bags .

Cruise gift basket ideas

Can’t decide on just one or two cruise gift ideas? Why not make a cruise gift basket? Instead of using a boring wicker basket, give your gifts in a packable pop-up laundry basket that they can use during their cruise.

Is your cruiser going to a tropical destination? Or do they have a summer cruise planned? A cute beach bag makes the perfect packaging for a warm-weather cruise gift.

MIYO Beach Bag, Mesh Beach Bag, Women's Tote Bag, Beach Mesh Bag, Large Capacity Beach Organizer with Zipper and 9 Pockets-Blue

Another fun cruise gift basket alternative is a lightweight packable backpack . This would be a great way to pack some cruise essentials for a kid who’s going on a cruise.

Introduction

Embarking on a cruise is an exciting and memorable experience, filled with adventure and relaxation. Whether you’re a seasoned cruiser or planning your first voyage, one crucial aspect to consider is the size of your luggage.

Choosing the right size luggage for your cruise is essential for a variety of reasons. Not only does it determine how much you can pack, but it also affects your comfort and convenience throughout your journey. Before setting sail, it’s essential to understand the factors that influence the ideal luggage size for your specific needs.

In this article, we will explore the various factors you need to consider when determining the size of your luggage for a cruise. From the size of your cabin to the duration of your trip, climate and destination, and even luggage restrictions and policies, we will cover everything you need to know to make an informed decision.

So, whether you plan to explore the warm waters of the Caribbean or embark on an adventurous Alaskan cruise, let’s dive into the world of luggage sizes and find the perfect fit for your cruise vacation.

Factors to Consider

When it comes to choosing the right size luggage for your cruise, there are several factors you need to take into consideration. By understanding these factors, you can ensure that you have enough space to pack all your essentials while also staying within the limitations set by the cruise line. Here are the key factors to keep in mind:

  • Cabin Size and Storage Space: The size of your cabin plays a significant role in determining how much luggage you can bring. Cabin sizes can vary widely, ranging from cozy interior cabins to spacious suites. Take into account the available storage space in your cabin, including closets, drawers, and shelves, to gauge how much luggage you can comfortably fit.
  • Duration of the Cruise: The length of your cruise will directly impact the amount of clothing and other essentials you need to bring. For shorter cruises, you can opt for smaller luggage, while longer voyages may require larger suitcases to accommodate additional clothing and personal items.
  • Climate and Destination: Consider the climate and destination of your cruise when choosing your luggage size. If you’re heading to a tropical destination, you may need to pack more lightweight clothing and swimwear. For colder climates, heavier layers and bulky winter gear may be necessary. Adjust your luggage size accordingly to accommodate the appropriate clothing for your cruise.
  • Luggage Restrictions and Policies: It’s crucial to familiarize yourself with the luggage restrictions and policies of your chosen cruise line. Different cruise lines have varying rules regarding the size and weight of luggage. Be aware of any limitations to avoid any extra fees or having to leave behind certain items.
  • Types of Luggage: Consider the types of luggage available to you. Carry-on luggage and checked luggage serve different purposes and have their own size limitations. Understanding the differences between these types of luggage can help you make an informed decision.

By considering these factors, you can ensure that you choose the right size luggage for your cruise. This will ensure a smooth and hassle-free journey, allowing you to focus on enjoying your time on board and exploring the exciting destinations on your itinerary.

Cabin Size and Storage Space

When it comes to choosing the right size luggage for your cruise, one of the most critical factors to consider is the size of your cabin and the available storage space. Cabins on cruise ships can vary in size, from cozy interior cabins to spacious suites with balconies. The size of your cabin will directly impact how much luggage you can bring and how comfortably you can move around.

Before packing for your cruise, research the dimensions and layout of your cabin. This information is usually available from the cruise line or travel agent. Take note of the closet size, the number of drawers, and any shelves or storage compartments provided. This will give you an idea of the amount of space you have for your belongings.

If your cabin has limited storage space, it’s best to opt for smaller, more compact luggage. Consider using soft-sided suitcases or duffel bags that can be easily folded or compressed to fit into tight spaces. Additionally, packing cubes or compression bags can help maximize storage efficiency and keep your belongings organized.

On the other hand, if you have a spacious cabin, you may have the luxury of bringing larger suitcases or even multiple pieces of luggage. However, it’s still important to be mindful of not overpacking, as it can lead to unnecessary stress and difficulty in finding what you need during your cruise.

Remember that in addition to storing your luggage, you’ll also need space to move around comfortably in your cabin. Large, bulky suitcases can take up valuable floor space and make it challenging to navigate your room. Opting for smaller, more streamlined luggage can help create a more spacious and enjoyable living environment during your cruise.

By considering the size of your cabin and the available storage space, you can choose the right size luggage that allows you to pack all your essentials without compromising comfort and convenience. Take the time to plan and organize your belongings efficiently, and you’ll have a stress-free, clutter-free cabin to relax and unwind in during your cruise.

Duration of the Cruise

Another crucial factor to consider when choosing the right size luggage for your cruise is the duration of your trip. The length of your cruise will determine the amount of clothing, toiletries, and other essentials you need to bring along. It’s important to strike a balance between having enough items to last the entire journey and avoiding overpacking.

For shorter cruises, such as weekend getaways or 3-5 day trips, you can opt for smaller luggage options. A carry-on suitcase or a medium-sized duffel bag should provide enough space to pack a few outfits, toiletries, and any necessary accessories. Since the duration is shorter, there is less need for a wide variety of clothing options.

On the other hand, for longer cruises, such as week-long or multi-week voyages, you will need to bring more clothing and personal items. In this case, larger suitcases or multiple pieces of luggage may be necessary. Consider the different types of activities and occasions you’ll encounter during the cruise, such as formal dinners or casual excursions, and pack accordingly.

One helpful tip is to plan your outfits in advance and focus on mixing and matching clothing items. This will allow you to create different looks with fewer individual pieces, ultimately reducing the amount of clothing you need to bring. It’s also a good idea to pack lightweight, quick-drying fabrics that can be easily washed and dried if needed.

If you’re unsure about the appropriate luggage size for your cruise’s duration, it’s better to lean towards a slightly larger suitcase. This will give you more flexibility in case you want to purchase souvenirs or bring back items from your travels. Just be mindful of any luggage weight restrictions imposed by the cruise line.

By considering the duration of your cruise and planning your packing accordingly, you can ensure that you have enough essentials to last the trip without burdening yourself with excess luggage. It’s all about finding the right balance and optimizing the space you have available.

Climate and Destination

When it comes to packing for a cruise, considering the climate and destination of your voyage is essential. Different destinations and climates require specific types of clothing and gear, which can influence the size and contents of your luggage. By planning ahead and packing accordingly, you can ensure that you have everything you need for a comfortable and enjoyable cruise.

First and foremost, research the weather conditions and average temperatures of your cruise destination. If you’re heading to a tropical paradise, such as the Caribbean or Hawaii, you’ll likely need lightweight and breathable clothing like shorts, t-shirts, sundresses, and swimwear. In this case, you can pack lighter and opt for smaller luggage options.

On the other hand, if you’re cruising to colder regions, such as Alaska or Northern Europe, you’ll need to pack layers and heavier clothing items to stay warm. This may include jackets, sweaters, long-sleeved shirts, and pants. Additionally, you may need to bring accessories like gloves, hats, scarves, and boots. These bulkier items may require larger suitcases or extra bags to accommodate them.

It’s also important to consider any specific activities or excursions planned at your destinations. For example, if your cruise includes hiking or outdoor adventures, you may need to bring specialized gear like hiking boots, rain jackets, or snorkeling equipment. These additional items should be factored into your luggage size considerations.

Another aspect to keep in mind is the dress code on board the cruise ship. Some cruises may have formal nights where you’ll require more formal attire. This could include cocktail dresses for women and suits or tuxedos for men. If you’re planning to participate in these events, you’ll need to allocate space in your luggage for these dressier outfits.

By taking into account the climate and destination of your cruise, you can pack the appropriate clothing and gear while managing the size of your luggage. Plan your outfits accordingly, considering the expected weather conditions and any specific activities or events, to ensure that you have everything you need for the journey.

Luggage Restrictions and Policies

Before embarking on your cruise, it’s crucial to familiarize yourself with the luggage restrictions and policies of your chosen cruise line. Each cruise line has its own set of guidelines regarding the size, weight, and number of bags allowed, and it’s essential to adhere to these restrictions to avoid any complications or additional fees.

Start by visiting the cruise line’s official website or contacting their customer service to obtain accurate and up-to-date information on their luggage policies. Pay close attention to the allowed dimensions and weight for both carry-on and checked luggage. Typically, checked luggage may have a higher weight limit, while carry-on luggage is subject to stricter size restrictions.

Keep in mind that luggage restrictions can vary depending on the cruise line, the specific ship, and even the embarkation port. Certain destinations, such as those with small ports or limited transportation options, may have tighter luggage policies due to logistical reasons. Be sure to verify any specific requirements for your itinerary.

Aside from size and weight limitations, it’s also important to be aware of any prohibited items. Some items, such as weapons, flammable substances, or illegal drugs, are strictly forbidden on cruise ships for safety and regulatory reasons. Ensure that your luggage complies with these restrictions to avoid any issues during embarkation or throughout your journey.

Additionally, consider any additional fees that may apply for exceeding luggage restrictions or bringing certain items on board. Some cruise lines charge extra for overweight or oversized luggage, and others may have specific rules for sports equipment, musical instruments, or fragile items. Understanding these policies beforehand can help you avoid unexpected charges and make necessary arrangements, such as pre-booking luggage storage or shipping services for specialized items.

By taking the time to familiarize yourself with the luggage restrictions and policies of your chosen cruise line, you can ensure a smooth and hassle-free experience. Pack within the designated size and weight limits, avoid bringing prohibited items, and be prepared for any additional fees that may apply, allowing you to focus on enjoying your cruise to the fullest.

Types of Luggage

When it comes to choosing the right size luggage for your cruise, it’s important to understand the different types of luggage available to you. Each type serves a specific purpose and has its own advantages and limitations. By considering these options, you can select the most suitable luggage for your needs and make the most of your cruise experience.

Carry-On Luggage: Carry-on luggage refers to bags that you can bring with you onto the cruise ship and keep with you throughout your journey. These bags are typically smaller in size and are designed to fit in the overhead compartments or under the seat in front of you. Carry-on luggage is convenient as it allows you to have immediate access to your belongings while on board and eliminates the need to wait for checked luggage upon arrival. However, it’s important to check the size restrictions imposed by the cruise line to ensure your carry-on bag meets the requirements.

Checked Luggage: Checked luggage refers to larger suitcases or bags that are checked in with the cruise ship staff upon embarkation. These bags are stored in the ship’s cargo area and are typically delivered to your cabin before or shortly after boarding. Checked luggage allows you to bring more clothing, personal items, and larger or bulkier items such as shoes, toiletries, and electronics. However, it’s crucial to adhere to the weight and size restrictions imposed by the cruise line to avoid any additional fees or difficulties during luggage handling.

Travel Backpacks: Travel backpacks are a popular option for those who prefer a hands-free and versatile luggage solution. These backpacks often come with multiple compartments and pockets, providing ample space for organizing your belongings. While travel backpacks are convenient for exploring ports of call or participating in active excursions, they may have limitations in terms of overall capacity compared to traditional suitcases.

Duffel Bags: Duffel bags are soft-sided bags with a flexible and spacious design. They are lightweight and easy to store when not in use, making them a practical choice for cruise travel. Duffel bags can be a great option if you have limited storage space in your cabin, as they can be easily folded or compressed. However, it’s important to note that duffel bags may lack the structure and organization features of other luggage types.

Suitcases: Suitcases are the most common and widely used type of luggage. They come in various sizes and designs, including hard-sided and soft-sided options. Suitcases provide a more structured and organized packing experience, with compartments, dividers, and wheels for easy transportation. Depending on the size and weight restrictions, suitcases can be an excellent choice for those who require more storage space and prefer a sturdy and secure luggage option.

Consider your personal preferences, travel style, and the specific needs of your cruise when deciding on the type of luggage to bring. It’s also worth noting that a combination of different luggage types, such as a carry-on bag and a checked suitcase, can provide the flexibility and convenience you desire.

By selecting the appropriate type of luggage, you can ensure that your belongings are well-protected, easily accessible, and efficiently organized throughout your cruise journey, enhancing both your comfort and peace of mind.

Carry-On Luggage

Carry-on luggage is an essential component when planning for a cruise. It refers to the bags that you can bring with you onto the cruise ship and keep with you throughout your journey. These bags are typically smaller in size and are designed to fit in the overhead compartments or under the seat in front of you. Choosing the right carry-on luggage is crucial for convenience, accessibility, and ensuring a smooth travel experience.

When selecting carry-on luggage for a cruise, consider the size restrictions imposed by the cruise line. Most cruise lines have specific dimensions for carry-on bags to ensure they fit in the overhead bins or under the seats without any issues. Make sure to choose a bag that meets these requirements to avoid any complications during boarding.

One of the main benefits of carry-on luggage is having immediate access to your belongings. This is especially useful if you want to quickly change into more comfortable clothing, grab essential items during the flight, or have easy access to important documents like passports and travel itineraries. It also eliminates the need to wait for checked luggage upon arrival, allowing you to disembark and start exploring as soon as the ship docks.

When it comes to packing your carry-on bag, prioritize items that are necessary for your comfort and immediate needs. This includes a change of clothes, toiletries, medications, electronics, travel documents, and any valuable items. Additionally, consider packing a small bag within your carry-on for small essentials like your wallet, phone, charger, and any other items you may need during the journey.

It’s important to note that although carry-on luggage provides convenience, it has its limitations in terms of size and weight. To comply with airport and cruise line regulations, it’s essential to be mindful of any liquid restrictions and to pack any toiletries or liquids in accordance with the guidelines. You may also want to consider any additional rules that apply to items such as sharp objects, alcohol, or other restricted items.

One useful tip is to pack your carry-on with the assumption that your checked luggage may be delayed or temporarily unavailable upon boarding. By ensuring you have essential items in your carry-on, such as a change of clothes and toiletries, you can comfortably navigate your first few hours on the ship without relying solely on your checked luggage.

Overall, choosing the appropriate carry-on luggage for your cruise is essential for a seamless and enjoyable travel experience. Make sure to consider the size restrictions, prioritize essential items, and adhere to any regulations imposed by the cruise line and transportation authorities. With the right carry-on bag, you’ll have the convenience of easy access to your belongings and a stress-free start to your cruise vacation.

Checked Luggage

Checked luggage is an integral part of your cruise travel preparations. It refers to the larger suitcases or bags that are checked in with the cruise ship staff upon embarkation, which are stored in the ship’s cargo area and later delivered to your cabin. Choosing the right checked luggage is crucial for accommodating your clothing, personal items, and any larger or bulkier items you may need during your cruise.

When selecting checked luggage for a cruise, it’s important to consider the size and weight restrictions imposed by the cruise line. Most cruise lines have specific guidelines to ensure smooth handling and storage of the luggage. Make sure to check the dimensions and weight limits to avoid any additional fees or difficulties during embarkation.

One of the significant advantages of checked luggage is the ability to bring more clothing options and personal items. This is especially important for longer cruises or if you prefer to have a variety of outfits for different occasions. Checked luggage can comfortably accommodate items such as shoes, toiletries, extra layers, and any special equipment or gear you may need for activities or excursions.

When packing your checked luggage, it’s important to be organized and maximize the available space. Utilize packing cubes or compression bags to efficiently pack your clothing and keep them wrinkle-free. Place heavier items at the bottom, near the wheels, for better balance, and utilize pockets, compartments, and dividers to separate and organize your belongings.

It’s also advisable to pack a small carry-on bag within your checked luggage. This can be useful for carrying essential items you may need during embarkation, such as a change of clothes, toiletries, and any valuables you prefer to keep with you.

While checked luggage provides ample space for your belongings, it’s important not to exceed the weight limit imposed by the cruise line. Weigh your luggage before departure to ensure it meets the guidelines. If you anticipate purchasing souvenirs or shopping during your cruise, leave some room in your checked luggage or consider bringing an empty foldable bag to accommodate any extra items you acquire.

Furthermore, it’s crucial to secure your checked luggage with durable locks and ensure that they are labeled with your name, contact information, and cruise ship details. This will make it easier for staff to identify, should it get misplaced or lost during the journey.

By choosing the appropriate checked luggage for your cruise, you can comfortably pack your clothing, personal items, and any additional gear. Adhere to the size and weight restrictions, pack efficiently, and include a small carry-on bag within your checked luggage for immediate essentials. With a well-prepared and organized checked bag, you can enjoy a smooth and stress-free cruise experience.

Tips for Choosing the Right Size

Choosing the right size luggage for your cruise is essential for a comfortable and convenient travel experience. Here are some tips to help you select the appropriate luggage size:

  • Research the airline and cruise line restrictions: Each airline and cruise line has specific size and weight restrictions for both carry-on and checked luggage. Check the official websites or contact customer service to gather accurate information before making a decision.
  • Consider your cabin size: Take into account the size of your cabin and the available storage space. If you have a smaller cabin, opt for compact luggage that can easily fit in the available storage areas.
  • Think about the duration of the cruise: For shorter cruises, smaller luggage may be sufficient. However, longer cruises may require larger suitcases to accommodate additional clothing and personal items.
  • Take the climate and destination into account: Pack appropriate clothing for the climate and activities at your destination. Warmer climates may call for lightweight clothing, while colder regions require heavier layers. Adapt your luggage size accordingly.
  • Remember the luggage restrictions and policies: Familiarize yourself with the luggage restrictions and policies of the cruise line to avoid any additional fees or complications during embarkation. Be aware of any prohibited items as well.
  • Consider different types of luggage: Explore various types of luggage such as carry-on bags, checked suitcases, backpacks, or duffel bags. Evaluate their pros and cons in terms of size, practicality, and ease of use.
  • Plan your outfits and mix and match: Optimize your packing space by planning your outfits in advance. Mix and match clothing items to create different looks with fewer pieces. This will help reduce the amount of clothing you need to bring.
  • Don’t forget about the weight limits: Be mindful of the weight limits imposed by the airline and cruise line, especially for checked luggage. Weigh your luggage before departure to ensure you stay within the guidelines.
  • Leave room for souvenirs: If you anticipate purchasing souvenirs or shopping during your cruise, consider leaving some extra space in your luggage or bringing an additional foldable bag.
  • Utilize packing accessories: Make the most of packing accessories like packing cubes, compression bags, and garment bags. These can help maximize space, keep your belongings organized, and prevent wrinkles.

By following these tips, you can choose the right size luggage that suits your specific needs and ensures a stress-free and enjoyable cruise vacation. Prepare in advance, pack efficiently, and make the most of the available space while adhering to the regulations set forth by the airline and cruise line.

Choosing the right size luggage for your cruise vacation is essential for a comfortable and hassle-free travel experience. By considering factors such as cabin size, duration of the cruise, climate and destination, luggage restrictions, and the types of luggage available to you, you can make an informed decision.

Take the time to research the specific guidelines and regulations imposed by the airline and cruise line to ensure compliance with their size and weight restrictions. This will help you avoid any additional fees or complications during embarkation.

Consider the size of your cabin and the available storage space when deciding on the luggage size. Opt for smaller, more compact options if you have limited storage space or choose larger suitcases for spacious cabins.

Take into account the duration of your cruise and pack accordingly. For shorter trips, smaller luggage may suffice, while longer voyages may require larger suitcases to accommodate additional clothing and personal items.

The climate and destination of your cruise play a significant role in determining the type and size of luggage you need. Pack appropriate clothing and gear for the weather and activities you’ll encounter during your journey.

Lastly, familiarize yourself with the luggage restrictions and policies of the cruise line to avoid any complications or extra fees. Be mindful of prohibited items and adhere to the weight and size limitations set forth by the cruise line.

By following these guidelines and considering the tips mentioned, you can choose the right size luggage that suits your needs and ensures a stress-free and enjoyable cruise vacation. Pack efficiently, utilize packing accessories, and plan your outfits wisely to maximize space and organization.

Remember, the right luggage size allows you to bring everything you need while maintaining convenience and comfort throughout your cruise. So, embark on your next adventure well-prepared and with the perfect size luggage in tow!
