Journey’s protective iPhone 13 leather case feels just right [Review]

Whether you’re getting an iPhone 13 series handset at a discount because iPhone 14 is coming soon or you just want to change up your case for the iPhone you already have, you can’t go wrong with the tasteful and tough Journey iPhone 13 Leather Case.

The company sent me a MagSafe-compatible, tan-colored case for iPhone 13 Pro to try out. I found it a refreshing switch from the Apple clear MagSafe case I’d been using, which had begun to blacken at the corners over the past several months.

Journey iPhone 13 Pro Leather Case

Journey, an Alogic brand, makes chargers and accessories, Apple Watch bands and leather cases for iPhones and AirPods.

The refined look and feel of the Journey iPhone 13 Pro Leather Case I’ve been using for several days impressed me right out of the box. And it continues to impress me.

Refined look and feel

The light-weight leather case looks terrific and feels good in the hand. It looks a bit lighter in color in-person than it does in some of the photos, by the way. The photos on the Journey website show the color well.

The light scratches in the leather, visible in some of the photos, were my doing, by the way. I accidentally added some “character” that I think will probably blend in more over time.

A nice aspect of the case is that the branding, like my scratches, is pretty subtle. A small, glossy “Journey” is embossed along one matte black edge in the same color. And inside the case the Journey logo appears.

You can find leather iPhone cases that are more supple and distinguished-looking than this one, but they will cost substantially more.

Reasonably protective

The Journey case feels almost as protective as the Apple clear case I use most of the time. The Journey case is rated to withstand falls of up to 6 feet, which covers most real-world drops. Just don’t drop your iPhone off a building.

The reason I say “almost” as protective is simply that the Journey case features cutouts for all button and ports, whereas the Apple case covers the buttons with thin TPU. Journey’s cutouts offer some protection, though, in that the buttons are in a recession, so the adjacent bumper material probably takes the punishment in a fall.

But Journey provides a bit more protection than Apple at the bottom of the case. Journey’s cutouts precisely encircle the Lighting port and speaker holes, whereas the Apple case is open. Its hard edge material stops at the corners of the handset.

The Journey case also features a hard, raised lip around the iPhones camera assembly. At 1mm thick, the black lip is not as thick as Apple’s, but seems just as protective. And the black color matches the bumper material on the case’s edges. It goes well with the tan leather.

The case’s microfiber lining feels like it shouldn’t scratch my iPhone at all.

Slim and light case made of supple leather

Journey’s case is just 0.07 inches thick at its edges, which his pretty slim for a case that feels this rugged. “Phones don’t have to be bricks,” Journey says on its websites, and mine certainly isn’t one in this case.

The company uses full-grain leather from Ecco, based the Netherlands. Its soft feel in the hand is a nice change from the Apple case’s polycarbonate exterior.

Leather like this should develop a patina over time, Journey says, darkening a bit in color. I hope any developing patina will sort of absorb or disguise any further scratching of the surface I manage to inflict.

MagSafe compatible

The case features a built-in array of magnets that ensures an iPhone sticks to MagSafe and other magnetic chargers. My iPhone in the case readily took to a third-party MagSafe-compatible 3-in-1 charger, as did the case by itself.

Bottom line, if you want a refined and protective leather case for your iPhone that doesn’t cost too much, go with Journey. It’s not unusual to see cases of similar quality that go for $20 to $50 more.

Everyone has different needs here, whether it’s an ultra-protective option, something more affordable, a folio-style leather wallet solution, or super minimalist clear iPhone 14 case. Journey’s protective iPhone 13 leather case feels just right [Review]

Whether you’re getting an iPhone 13 series handset at a discount because iPhone 14 is coming soon or you just want to change up your case for the iPhone you already have, you can’t go wrong with the tasteful and tough Journey iPhone 13 Leather Case.

The company sent me a MagSafe-compatible, tan-colored case for iPhone 13 Pro to try out. I found it a refreshing switch from the Apple clear MagSafe case I’d been using, which had begun to blacken at the corners over the past several months.

Journey iPhone 13 Pro Leather Case

Journey, an Alogic brand, makes chargers and accessories, Apple Watch bands and leather cases for iPhones and AirPods.

The refined look and feel of the Journey iPhone 13 Pro Leather Case I’ve been using for several days impressed me right out of the box. And it continues to impress me.

Refined look and feel

The light-weight leather case looks terrific and feels good in the hand. It looks a bit lighter in color in-person than it does in some of the photos, by the way. The photos on the Journey website show the color well.

The light scratches in the leather, visible in some of the photos, were my doing, by the way. I accidentally added some “character” that I think will probably blend in more over time.

A nice aspect of the case is that the branding, like my scratches, is pretty subtle. A small, glossy “Journey” is embossed along one matte black edge in the same color. And inside the case the Journey logo appears.

You can find leather iPhone cases that are more supple and distinguished-looking than this one, but they will cost substantially more.

Reasonably protective

The Journey case feels almost as protective as the Apple clear case I use most of the time. The Journey case is rated to withstand falls of up to 6 feet, which covers most real-world drops. Just don’t drop your iPhone off a building.

The reason I say “almost” as protective is simply that the Journey case features cutouts for all button and ports, whereas the Apple case covers the buttons with thin TPU. Journey’s cutouts offer some protection, though, in that the buttons are in a recession, so the adjacent bumper material probably takes the punishment in a fall.

But Journey provides a bit more protection than Apple at the bottom of the case. Journey’s cutouts precisely encircle the Lighting port and speaker holes, whereas the Apple case is open. Its hard edge material stops at the corners of the handset.

The Journey case also features a hard, raised lip around the iPhones camera assembly. At 1mm thick, the black lip is not as thick as Apple’s, but seems just as protective. And the black color matches the bumper material on the case’s edges. It goes well with the tan leather.

The case’s microfiber lining feels like it shouldn’t scratch my iPhone at all.

Slim and light case made of supple leather

Journey’s case is just 0.07 inches thick at its edges, which his pretty slim for a case that feels this rugged. “Phones don’t have to be bricks,” Journey says on its websites, and mine certainly isn’t one in this case.

The company uses full-grain leather from Ecco, based the Netherlands. Its soft feel in the hand is a nice change from the Apple case’s polycarbonate exterior.

Leather like this should develop a patina over time, Journey says, darkening a bit in color. I hope any developing patina will sort of absorb or disguise any further scratching of the surface I manage to inflict.

MagSafe compatible

The case features a built-in array of magnets that ensures an iPhone sticks to MagSafe and other magnetic chargers. My iPhone in the case readily took to a third-party MagSafe-compatible 3-in-1 charger, as did the case by itself.

Bottom line, if you want a refined and protective leather case for your iPhone that doesn’t cost too much, go with Journey. It’s not unusual to see cases of similar quality that go for $20 to $50 more.

The company is an excellent choice for cases; one example is its donation program. Every month, Casely donates a portion of case sales to a different charity .

For example, in January, the company donated to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, and in February, Casely donated to Black Girls Code. In 2022, the company donated a total of $188,781 to charities.

But the cases themselves make Casely an excellent choice for purchasing one for your iPhone. The business offers many beautiful case designs, including Night Skies, Golden Hour, and Sunny Days, to name a few.

There are also plain cases to choose from, but the emphasis is on colorful designs from various artists. The cases we chose include a design with flowers , one with a skeleton , and a plain blue case .

Getting the cases on

The cases with a design came slightly curved out of the box, so they were challenging to put on our iPhone 14. They're made of rigid plastic, so you'll have to put in some effort to get one on a phone, though the plain blue case was much easier to use.

Additionally, only some cases will be compatible with MagSafe charging, at least not on all supported iPhones. For example, Casely's FAQ states that the Classic case collection is MagSafe-compatible for the iPhone 13 and iPhone 14 lineups.

However, the original Classic collection is incompatible with MagSafe wireless charging for the iPhone 12 Pro Max and iPhone 13 mini. Any clear Classic designs are also not MagSafe-compatible.

But an iPhone 14 had no trouble with MagSafe charging with any of the cases we chose. And some case collections offered by Casely have built-in magnets for MagSafe.

Using the cases

Once on, the cases were ready to go. Unfortunately, they add a fair amount of thickness to the iPhone, which we didn't like, but that's true of any case that isn't an ultra-thin version, which Casely doesn't sell.

The sides of the art cases had some small, protruding lines that offered nice texture for an extra grip, though the plain case was smooth all over. The power and volume buttons were easy to access because each case had little button covers for pressing.

Due to the art cases' rigidity, removing the iPhone was also tricky. So, because of the differences in the plastic, people might be better off with one of the plain cases — at least if they want to swap cases frequently.

But the art cases offer more protection. For example, they offer eight feet of drop protection with shock-absorbing air pockets, though that wasn't something we wanted to test.

Each case is excellent, and Casely offers a fantastic charity program, so it's a great shopping choice.

Casely sells products on its website and through Amazon at different prices. For example, the Solid Neon Blue and Navy Floral cases are $30, while the Van Gogh skull case is $50.

The Sunday Read: ‘What Deathbed Visions Teach Us About Living’

Chris Kerr was 12 when he first observed a deathbed vision. His memory of that summer in 1974 is blurred, but not the sense of mystery he felt at the bedside of his dying father. Throughout Kerr’s childhood in Toronto, his father, a surgeon, was too busy to spend much time with his son, except for an annual fishing trip they took, just the two of them, to the Canadian wilderness. Gaunt and weakened by cancer at 42, his father reached for the buttons on Kerr’s shirt, fiddled with them and said something about getting ready to catch the plane to their cabin in the woods. “I knew intuitively, I knew wherever he was, must be a good place because we were going fishing,” Kerr told me.

Kerr now calls what he witnessed an end-of-life vision. His father wasn’t delusional, he believes. His mind was taking him to a time and place where he and his son could be together, in the wilds of northern Canada.

Kerr followed his father into medicine, and in the last 10 years he has hired a permanent research team that expanded studies on deathbed visions to include interviews with patients receiving hospice care at home and with their families, deepening researchers’ understanding of the variety and profundity of these visions.
