Global Dining Access

The Global Dining Access program (“GDA”) is a benefit available to eligible Card Members. “Eligible Card Members” are account holders of Platinum Card® or Centurion® Card from American Express, Business Platinum Card®, Business Centurion® Card from American Express, Corporate Platinum Card® or Corporate Centurion® Card from American Express, Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card, Delta SkyMiles® Reserve Business American Express Card, Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card, The Platinum Card® from American Express Exclusively for Morgan Stanley, The Platinum Card® from American Express Exclusively for Charles Schwab, The Platinum Card® from American Express for Goldman Sachs, and The Centurion® Card from American Express for Goldman Sachs (and any Additional Card Member(s) on their accounts). GDA may not be available for Cards issued from some countries. GDA provides eligible Card Members with (a) access to exclusive reservations, (b) Priority Notify, which allows GDA members to set notifications to be in the first group notified when tables become available before they are made available to other Resy users, and (c) access to exclusive events. GDA reservations are accessible through the Resy iOS App and Website (“Resy Sites”) and Concierge. Some features of GDA, like Priority Notify, may not be available through Concierge. To access this benefit through the Resy iOS App, you must download the Resy App; or if you already have the Resy iOS App, ensure the latest update is downloaded. When using the Resy Sites, create a Resy account or log into your existing Resy account and add your eligible Card to your Resy account. If you are assigned a new Card number, you must update the Card number in your Resy account. When you use GDA, a badge will be placed on your Resy profile, letting restaurants know that you are a member of the GDA program. Reservations are based on a first-come, first-served basis. In the event of a reservation cancellation, you will be subject to the restaurant’s cancellation policy. Generally, same-day reservations that are not booked by GDA members are released back to restaurants at certain times of day that vary across restaurant policies. American Express and Resy make no representations or warranties regarding the availability of reservations, events, and/or experiences, which shall at all times be subject to availability and the discretion of the applicable restaurant. American Express and Resy are not responsible for informing the restaurants of any dietary restrictions or for a restaurant being able to accommodate such restrictions. There is no cost to you for booking services through GDA, although you are responsible for any purchases or fees you authorize to be charged to your Card account. GDA reservations and events are intended for personal use only and cannot be resold or used for commercial purposes. By participating in the GDA program, you are accepting these GDA terms and conditions, which are in addition to and do not replace the Resy Sites’ Terms of Service. To be eligible for this benefit, your Card account must not be cancelled.

Effective April 15th, 2024, an American Express Card must be selected as the payment method for your order or ride to redeem the Uber Cash benefit each month, in addition to having Uber Cash toggled on and using a personal profile. Basic Card Members on a Consumer Platinum Card or Centurion account and Additional Centurion Card Members are eligible for Uber VIP and the monthly Amex Benefit (“Amex Benefit”). To receive this benefit, you must have downloaded the latest version of the Uber App and your eligible Platinum Card or Centurion Card must be a method of payment in your Uber account. The Amex Benefit may only be used in the United States. To be eligible for the Amex Benefit, your Card Account must not be canceled or past due. American Express reserves the right to suspend your eligibility for the Amex Benefit if we suspect any violation or abuse. To continue to receive the Amex Benefit, the details for your eligible Card must be kept up to date in your Uber Account. Cards added to your Uber account through a third party such as Apple Pay or PayPal will not be eligible. An eligible Platinum Card or Centurion Card may receive the Amex Benefit on one Uber account. If the same Card is added to multiple Uber accounts, only the first Uber account to which the Card is added will receive the Amex Benefit. If your American Express Card details change, you will need to make required updates to your Card details in your Uber payment profile before the end of the current month to ensure you remain enrolled in the Amex Benefit. If you do not update your Card details prior to the first day of the following month, you may need to re-enroll to continue to receive your Amex benefit. It may take up to 48 hours for the Amex Benefit to become available in your Uber account after your eligible Card has been added to that account. Uber VIP is available in select cities and is governed by Uber’s terms and conditions. The Amex Benefit is found within your Uber Cash balance. In order to use the Amex Benefit, Uber Cash must be turned on. If Uber Cash is turned on when you request a ride, Uber Cash will appear above the confirmation button. If Uber Cash does not appear above the confirmation button, tap on the current payment option and turn on Uber Cash. If you do not see the Amex Benefit in your Uber Cash balance within 48 hours from the time you enroll, call the number on the back of your Card for assistance. The Amex Benefit may be applied to all vehicle types with Uber, orders on Uber Eats and to any other services to which Uber permits Uber Cash to be applied. If your Uber Cash balance does not satisfy the cost of your ride or order, the primary payment method on your Uber account will be charged for the difference. The Amex Benefit will not apply to previous Uber transactions and cannot be used when paying with an UberFAMILY profile. New and existing Uber users are eligible. Uber will apply the Amex Benefit at the point of sale and it will be displayed on your emailed receipt. There is no limit to the number of transactions you may apply your Amex Benefit to each month, up to a total of $15 per month (up to a total of $35 in December). Your monthly Amex Benefit expires at 11:59 PM Hawaii Standard Time on the last day of each calendar month. Unused balance in Uber Cash from your Amex Benefit will not carry over to the following month. Your Amex Benefit will be applied for the month in which the transaction is completed. If a transaction is eligible for another promotion that you have added to your Uber account, the promotion will be applied before your Amex Benefit. Certain other types of balances in Uber Cash may be applied to the cost of your ride or order prior to your Amex Benefit in Uber Cash. For purposes of fulfilling this benefit, American Express will share with Uber certain information about your Card, including the Card type, and updated Card information from time to time. If you do not wish to receive the Amex Benefit, please call the number on the back of your Card. If you do not see the Amex Benefit in your Uber Cash balance by 5:00 PM Hawaii Standard Time on the first day of each calendar month, call the number on the back of your Card for assistance. Uber Cash terms and conditions also apply; see uber.com/ubercashterms.

5X Air and Hotel

Basic Card Members will get 1 Membership Rewards® point for each dollar charged for eligible purchases on their Platinum Card® or an Additional Card on their Account and 4 additional points (for a total of 5 points) for each dollar charged for eligible travel purchases on any Card on the Account ("Additional Points"), minus cancellations and credits. Eligible travel purchases are limited to: (i) purchases of air tickets on scheduled flights, of up to $500,000 in charges per calendar year, booked directly with passenger airlines or through American Express Travel (by calling 1-800-525-3355 or through AmexTravel.com ); (ii) purchases of prepaid hotel reservations booked through American Express Travel; and (iii) purchases of prepaid flight+hotel packages booked through AmexTravel.com . Eligible travel purchases do not include: charter flights, private jet flights, flights that are part of tours, cruises, or travel packages (other than prepaid flight+hotel packages booked through AmexTravel.com ), ticketing or simlar service fees, ticket cancellation or change fees, property fees or similar fees, hotel group reservations or events, interest charges, or purchases of cash equivalents. Eligible prepaid hotel bookings or prepaid flight+hotel bookings that are modified directly with the hotel will not be eligible for Additional Points. Bonuses that may be received with your Card on other purchase categories or in connection with promotions or offers from American Express cannot be combined with this benefit. Any portion of a charge that the Basic Card Member elects to cover through redemption of Membership Rewards points is not eligible to receive points. Additional terms and restrictions apply. Merchants are assigned codes based on what they primarily sell. We group certain merchant codes into categories that are eligible for Additional Points. A purchase with a merchant will not earn Additional Points if the merchant's code is not included in an Additional Points category. Basic Card Members may not receive Additional Points if we receive inaccurate information or are otherwise unable to identify your purchase as eligible for an Additional Points category. For example, you may not receive Additional Points when: a merchant uses a third-party to sell their products or services, a merchant uses a third-party to process or submit your transaction to us (e.g., using mobile or wireless card readers), or you choose to make a purchase using a third-party payment account or make a purchase using a mobile or digital wallet. To be eligible for this benefit, the Card Account must not be cancelled. If American Express, in its sole discretion, determines that you have engaged in or intend to engage in any manner of abuse, misuse, or gaming in connection with this benefit in any way American Express may remove access to this benefit from the Account. For additional information, call the number on the back of your Card or visit americanexpress.com/rewards-info for more information about rewards.

$240 Digital Entertainment Credit

Enrollment through American Express is required to receive the benefit. Only the Basic Card Member or Authorized Account Manager(s) on a U.S. Consumer Platinum Card Account can enroll in the benefit in the Benefits section of their Americanexpress.com online account or by calling us. Eligible purchases (see below) must be made directly with the participating partners in the U.S. locations where the partners’ services are available. Purchases by both the Basic Card Member and Additional Card Members on the enrolled Card Account are eligible for statement credits. However, statement credits will be provided for only $20 in statement credits per month per Card Account, for a total of $240 per calendar year, whether the purchase was made by the Basic Card Member or Additional Card Members on the Account. Only valid for transactions completed in the U.S. and U.S. Territories. Eligible subscriptions will automatically renew unless canceled and the merchant will charge the applicable membership fee to the Card they have on file. Purchases of prepaid or gift cards from third-party retailers for use at the participating partners are not eligible for this benefit. Only valid on eligible purchases charged directly with the following partners: Disney+, ESPN+, Hulu, The New York Times, Peacock, SiriusXM, and The Wall Street Journal. Age minimums and other restrictions apply to use of each partner's services; see each partner’s terms and conditions for more information.

Disney+: All Disney+ purchases made directly through www.disneyplus.com are eligible, for example, a Disney Bundle. The Disney Bundle includes Disney+, Hulu and ESPN+, or Disney+ and Hulu. Access content from each service separately.

ESPN+: All ESPN+ purchases made directly through plus.espn.com are eligible, for example, Pay Per View (PPV) purchases and a Disney Bundle. The Disney Bundle includes Disney+, Hulu and ESPN+, or Disney+ and Hulu. Access content from each service separately.

Hulu: All Hulu purchases made directly through www.hulu.com are eligible, for example, a Disney Bundle. Disney Bundles include Disney+, Hulu and ESPN+, or Disney+ and Hulu. Access content from each service separately.

Eligible purchases do not include advertising services, NYT conferences, gift cards, TimesDigest or purchases from the NYTimes company store.

Peacock: Eligible purchases for Peacock include all Peacock subscriptions, for example, Peacock Premium and Premium Plus, made directly online at www.peacocktv.com . Eligible purchases do not include subscriptions bundled with cable services or other bundles, promotional offers through third parties, or gift cards.

SiriusXM: Eligible purchases for SiriusXM include purchases made directly with SiriusXM (US) at www.siriusxm.com , through SiriusXM telephone sales or direct mail order purchase transactions. Eligible purchases do not include SiriusXM safety, security or telematics services (connected vehicle); SiriusXM for Business subscriptions, SiriusXM ad sales, or any transactions involving SiriusXM’s Stitcher or Pandora services.

The Wall Street Journal: Eligible purchases for The Wall Street Journal include any subscriptions, for example, news bundles including The Wall Street Journal and Barron’s, MarketWatch and/or Investor’s Business Daily, made directly through www.wsj.com/amex . Eligible purchases do not include advertising services, WSJ events, gift cards or purchases from The Wall Street Journal Online Store. Please allow 6-8 weeks after an eligible purchase is charged to your Card Account for statement credit(s) to be posted to the Account. Please call the number on the back of the Card if statement credits have not posted after 8 weeks from the date of purchase. American Express relies on the merchant to process transactions within the same calendar month that you made the purchase in order to apply the $20 monthly statement credit in the month that it was intended. For example, if you make an eligible purchase on the last day of the month, but the merchant doesn't process that transaction until the next day, then the statement credit would be applied in the following month. If American Express does not receive information that identifies your transaction as eligible for the benefit, you will not receive the statement credit. For example, your transaction will not be eligible if it is not made directly with the merchant. In addition, in most cases, you may not receive the statement credit if your transaction is made with an electronic wallet or through a third party (such as an app store or cable bundle) or if the merchant uses a mobile or wireless card reader to process it.

To be eligible for this benefit, Card Account(s) must not be canceled and not past due at the time of statement credit fulfillment. If your Card has been replaced, make sure that the most up to date Account information is on file with the Merchant or else you may not receive the statement credits. If American Express, in its sole discretion, determines that you have engaged in or intend to engage in any manner of abuse, misuse, or gaming in connection with this benefit, American Express will not have an obligation to provide statement credits and may reverse any statement credits provided to you. If you receive a refund for an eligible purchase and the statement credit has been applied before the merchant refunds the charges, that statement credit may be reversed. If a charge for an eligible purchase is included in a Pay Over Time balance on your Card Account, the statement credit associated with that charge may not be applied to that Pay Over Time balance. Instead, the statement credit may be applied to your Pay In Full balance. For additional information, call the number on the back of your Card.

With Plan It®, you can create up to 10 active payment plans, each subject to a plan fee. The plan fee is a fixed finance charge that will be charged each month that the corresponding plan is active. You will be offered 1-3 plan duration options for the qualifying purchase. The plan duration options can vary based on a variety of factors such as the purchase amount, your Account history and your creditworthiness. If you are enrolled in an intro or promotional APR, you may see limited plan duration options during the intro or promotional period when you use Plan It on your Account. If you create a plan during an introductory or promotional APR period, your plan fee will be based on the introductory or promotional APR as long as the plan is created before 11:59pm MST on the last day of the introductory or promotional period.

To create a plan, select qualifying purchases of $100 or more and a plan duration. If you have a Card with a Credit Limit, you may also be able to select a qualifying amount of $100 or more and a plan duration. When creating a plan for purchases, you may select up to 10 qualifying purchases for each plan that you create in your American Express online Account. However, you may select only one qualifying purchase for each plan that you create in the American Express App. Qualifying purchases will be identified in your American Express online Account and American Express App. Qualifying purchases (or a qualifying amount, if you have a Card with a Credit Limit) do not include purchases of cash or cash equivalents, balance transfers (if offered), purchases subject to Foreign Transaction Fees, or any fee owed to us, including Annual Membership fees. Unless you are creating a plan at checkout, please allow 2-3 days for your purchase to post to your Account. Once your purchase posts and is no longer pending, you can create a plan for that purchase.

Your ability to create plans will be based on a variety of factors such as your creditworthiness, and your Credit Limit or Pay Over Time Limit, as applicable. The Pay Over Time Limit applies to the total of your Pay Over Time, Cash Advance, and Plan balances. You may not be able to create a plan if it would cause you to exceed your Pay Over Time Limit or cause your Plan balance to exceed 95% of your Account Total New Balance on your last billing statement. You will not be able to create plans if your Pay Over Time feature is suspended or your Account is canceled. You will also not be able to create plans if one or more of your American Express Accounts is enrolled in a payment program, has a payment that is returned unpaid, or is past due. The number and length of plan duration options offered to you, the number of active plans you can have at a time, and your ability to include multiple qualifying purchases in a single plan, will be at our discretion and will be based on a variety of factors such as your creditworthiness, the purchase amount(s), and your Account history. After a plan is paid in full, it will be removed from your Account in the next billing period.

Plan It is available on Card Accounts issued by a U.S. banking subsidiary of American Express, excluding Accounts that do not have either a Credit Limit or the Pay Over Time feature. Only the Basic Card Member or Authorized Account Managers on the Account can create a plan. Join Uri for lunch at his restaurant, Uri Buri, one of Israel’s most famous.

Great Spirit Circle Trail on Manitoulin Island, Ontario, Canada – The largest freshwater island in the world is home to the Anishinaabe people who offer insight into their history and culture through local experiences such as retracing ancient canoe routes, listening to songs and stories, tasting traditional tea and foods, and even setting up teepees.

Skilled local women in the onsite studio teach embroidery, painting and drawing and jewellery making from USD 30 to 50.

Hyatt Regency in Port of Spain, Trinidad – Trinidad gave the world the only new acoustic musical instrument invented in the 20th century – the steelpan – and through Banwari Tours (USD 65 per person), guests can watch and listen to musicians in local panyards (practice areas) and even make their own steelpan to ship home.

Keio Plaza Hotel in Tokyo, Japan – The graceful Japanese tea ceremony dates back more than 1,000 years, and Keio Plaza is one of the few hotels in central Tokyo with a ceremonial tearoom, where a tea master sits on the tatami mat and goes through carefully choreographed ritual, pouring tea and offering traditional sweets. Open to hotel guests and non-guests at USD 19 per person.

San Ignacio Resort Hotel in Belize – The threatened Green Iguana is the star at the rehabilitation and educational centre built on this hotel property . Update: Some offers mentioned below are no longer available. View the current offers here .

There are a ton of perks that come with having a card from American Express — many of which can make your travel experience more rewarding and luxurious. From airport lounge access to airline fee credits and benefits at top-notch resorts around the world , holding the right Amex card can transform your time on the road.

However, there's also a way for Amex cardholders to do this when making flight reservations — by booking online with American Express Travel . For select cards, American Express Travel can save you money and provide additional flexibility when it's time to use your Membership Rewards® points , a valuable combination as travel continues to rebound.

Here are some of the ways Amex Travel can elevate your next trip.

Unlock special prices

Thanks to Insider Fares and the International Airline Program through American Express Travel, eligible cardholders can save on domestic and international airfare across cabins. And because airfare purchased through Amex Travel comes in coded as a revenue ticket, you also earn airline miles and credit toward elite status (more on that below).

Searching for airfare on American Express Travel is easy: Simply navigate to this page , then click Log In and enter your account credentials. From there, begin searching for the type of travel you want.

amex travel experiences

However, this isn't just a place to search for flights. There are many ways you can use American Express Travel to unlock special pricing for your next trip — and here are two programs exclusively for eligible card members.

Insider Fares

Insider Fares give you access to flight deals on select domestic and international itineraries, and they're offered on all eligible American Express cards that earn Membership Rewards points, including:

  • The Platinum Card® from American Express
  • The Business Platinum Card® from American Express
  • American Express® Gold Card
  • American Express® Business Gold Card
  • The Blue Business® Plus Credit Card from American Express

When searching for airfare at AmexTravel.com , Insider Fares will appear only if you have enough Membership Rewards points to cover the entire cost of the ticket — but they won't be available on every flight. In addition, Insider Fares must be booked entirely with points.

amex travel experiences

In the above example, the Insider Fare would save you over 3,000 Membership Rewards points on this one-way flight from New York-JFK to Los Angeles (LAX).

And you could save even more when booking a Delta One ticket on the same flight.

amex travel experiences

Travelers could save nearly 18,000 Membership Rewards points to fly in the first-class cabin on this example.

And while Insider Fares are limited to flights booked at AmexTravel.com entirely using points, there's another way to save when paying with your card at AmexTravel.com .

International Airline Program

Cardholders of the Amex Platinum and the Amex Business Platinum cards can save when booking premium-cabin seats on international flights with the International Airline Program through American Express Travel.

You can find these fares on more than 25 airlines, and the program includes both refundable and nonrefundable tickets. It also extends to a total of eight travelers — you (as the cardholder) and up to seven companions.

Best of all, you can pay for your ticket with your card, points or a combination of both — and don't forget that you also still earn airline miles as you normally would, which you can then redeem for future travel.

Unlike Insider Fares, the International Airline Program is available to eligible cardholders no matter your current amount of Membership Rewards points. You also have the option to pay with your card or with your Membership Rewards points. And the higher the class of service, the greater the potential for savings.

amex travel experiences

In the above example, holders of either the Platinum or Business Platinum card would save $155 or 15,500 points on this round-trip, business-class ticket from Miami (MIA) to London-Heathrow (LHR).

There's even savings to be had when booking many premium-economy tickets through American Express Travel. In this example, you would save about $108 or 10,800 points on a round-trip ticket on the same flight from Miami to London.

amex travel experiences

These savings appear automatically for participating airlines when searching for flights at AmexTravel.com — giving you another reason to start your flight searches there.

Don't worry about award availability

While it's true that you can transfer Membership Rewards points to travel partners, it may be worthwhile to book through American Express Travel thanks to the additional flexibility you can get. For starters, award availability through airline programs is limited — especially in premium cabins. And transfers to airline partners can't be reversed, so a canceled flight could leave you with miles that are much less flexible than Membership Rewards points.

The last thing you want is for those points to be stuck somewhere you can't use them .

Luckily, you can always use points to pay for flights booked through American Express Travel, because there are no blackout dates.

amex travel experiences

The same British Airways flight above doesn't have any award availability in any class of service at the time of writing. But you wouldn't have to worry about that when you book with Amex Travel — and you'd still be saving whether you chose to pay with points or with your card.

Earn rewards for your next trip

The Platinum and Business Platinum cards are great for earning Membership Rewards points on flights booked through American Express Travel as well.

Those who have the Platinum card earn 5x Membership Rewards points on flights booked directly with airlines and at AmexTravel.com (up to $500,000 per calendar year), while Business Platinum cardholders can earn 5x on airfare booked at AmexTravel.com . (Both can also earn 5x points on prepaid hotels booked at AmexTravel.com .)

But other cards offer bonuses on airfare purchases too. For example, the Amex Gold card awards 3x points for flights booked directly with the airline and at AmexTravel.com — so you don't need to have a Platinum card to earn bonus Membership Rewards points.

And remember — you also earn airline miles and credit toward any applicable airline elite status requirements on the flights as you normally would, because airfare booked through American Express Travel comes in coded as a revenue ticket. This is true whether you pay for your flight with your card or with Membership Rewards points, allowing you to earn rewards across two programs — and potentially putting you closer to a given airline's elite status.

amex travel experiences

Enjoy benefits while traveling

In addition to the above benefits from booking through American Express Travel and at AmexTravel.com, it's also worth noting that Platinum cardholders have access to many additional perks that can enhance their experience on the road. This includes:

  • Annual Uber Cash of up to $200 (for U.S. services)*
  • Comprehensive airport lounge access , including Centurion Lounges*
  • Gold elite status with Hilton Honors and Marriott Bonvoy *

*Enrollment required for select benefits. Terms and conditions also apply. Please see each benefit's page for details.

For more details, check out our complete guide on maximizing benefits with the Amex Platinum card .

Bottom line

American Express Travel can elevate your flight booking experience by allowing you to save on airfare with two programs: Insider Fares and the International Airline Program.

Insider Fares are available to eligible American Express card members that are enrolled in the Membership Rewards program, while the International Airline Program is limited to holders of the Platinum and Business Platinum cards . And using your Membership Rewards points for flights in either program means you don't have to worry about scant award availability through frequent flyer programs.

Perhaps most importantly, all flights purchased through American Express Travel and at AmexTravel.com — whether with points or using your card — will count as revenue tickets and thus be eligible to earn miles as you normally would and count toward applicable airline elite status requirements.

For these reasons, consider starting your flight searches for your next trip with American Express Travel .

Dining and other perks

As a card member, you can access special dining experiences and reservations through Global Dining Access by Resy. You’ll also get access to exclusive experiences, including sporting events, art exhibits, and more, through the American Express By Invitation Only program.

Who is the Platinum Card from American Express best for?

In general, it only makes sense to apply for the Amex Platinum card if you travel often. Its perks are mostly travel-focused, so those who don’t venture away from home frequently probably won’t get much value from this card.

Jetsetters who travel regularly for business or pleasure likely won’t have to strategize much to offset the pricey annual fee. But to really maximize your points, you should be comfortable booking travel through the American Express portal, as those purchases earn the highest rewards.

Cardholders who frequently shop at the brands offering credits could also get good value from this card, though it may take more deliberate planning. For example, cardholders that max out the annual credits from Walmart, Uber, Equinox, and the eligible streaming and online media subscriptions would come out ahead.

You can use the Amex Platinum anywhere American Express cards are accepted. Amex is widely accepted in the U.S., though it’s not as commonly accepted globally. It’s also worth noting that you cannot use Amex cards at Costco .

Review your card agreement before traveling abroad if you have questions about acceptance, and consider bringing along a Visa or Mastercard as backup.

Alternative cards to consider

While the Platinum Card from American Express could be great for frequent travelers, its annual fee can make it cost-prohibitive for occasional travelers who can’t access all its benefits. Here are some alternative travel cards to consider if you feel it isn’t right for your wallet.

Chase Sapphire Reserve®

Why we like it : The Chase Sapphire Reserve has a slightly lower annual fee of $550, and cardholders can get a $300 annual travel credit. This card offers fewer credits than the Amex Platinum, but it still holds a lot of value.

After spending $4,000 in the first three months, you can earn a 60,000-point welcome bonus. These points are valued at up to $900, depending on your redemption. As a cardholder, you’ll get a free Priority Pass Select membership, which lets you access over 1,300 airport lounges worldwide.

Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card

Why we like it : The Venture X Rewards Credit Card from Capital One has a $395 annual fee, but you can also get a $300 travel credit when booking through the Capital One portal. Cardmembers can earn 75,000 miles after spending $4,000 in the first three months. Between the travel credit and welcome bonus, you could easily offset your annual fee for the first couple of years.

Besides that, you’ll also get complimentary access to Capital One airport lounges, Priority Pass lounges, and Plaza Premium lounges.

American Express® Gold Card

Why we like it : If you only travel occasionally and prefer to earn rewards elsewhere, the American Express Gold Card could be a good option. This card offers 4x points at restaurants, 4x points at U.S. supermarkets (up to $25,000 a year), 3x points on flights booked directly with airlines or through Amex Travel, and 1x points on everything else.

You can also earn 60,000 Amex Membership Rewards points if you spend $6,000 within three months of card opening. This card has a $250 annual fee. (See rates and fees .)

Who can use the American Express Travel portal?

Benefits of booking travel on amex travel, how to book travel in the portal, is travel insurance included when booking through amex travel, downsides of booking via amex travel, final thoughts on the amex travel portal.

The American Express Travel portal is similar to many other online booking sites in that it allows you to purchase flights, hotels and other travel reservations. The main difference is that only those who hold an American Express card can use it.

Certain cards come with additional perks for booking in the portal. For instance, some AmEx cards allow travelers to earn extra points for bookings, receive a 35% points rebate, pay for a portion of the reservation with points, get room upgrades and more. Terms apply.

Here's a look at what the AmEx Travel portal offers and how to use it to maximize your benefits.

American Express Travel flights, hotels and other reservations are available for American Express cardholders. Depending on which American Express card you have, you may earn additional points on your reservation or unlock additional features. Terms apply.

For example, The Platinum Card® from American Express cardholders earn 5x points on flights booked directly with an airline or through AmEx Travel and 5x points on prepaid hotels booked through AmEx Travel. They also have access to the Fine Hotels & Resorts collection through the travel portal. Additionally, American Express® Gold Card and The Platinum Card® from American Express cardholders can book room reservations with The Hotel Collection . Terms apply.

amex travel experiences

Here are eight reasons why booking with AmEx travel could be a good idea.

1. Earn up to 5x points

When you book flight through the AmEx Travel portal, your credit card may earn additional points for the purchase. In addition, prepaid hotel reservations through the AmEx travel portal also earn extra points. These are a few of the cards that offer a bonus when making reservations through AmEx travel:

The Platinum Card® from American Express – 5x points on flights, prepaid hotels and vacation packages, and 2x points on cruises.

American Express® Gold Card – 3x points on flights and 2x points on prepaid hotels, cruises and vacation packages.

American Express® Green Card – 3x points on all travel.

All other Membership Rewards points earning cards - 2x points on flights, prepaid hotels, cruises and vacation packages.

Terms apply.

2. Pay for reservations using Pay with Points

With American Express Travel, flights, hotels and more can be paid for with points instead of cash. Members can even choose to pay a portion of the trip with points and the rest with cash. Once your reservations have been booked, the full amount of your trip will be charged to your American Express credit card, and then a credit will be posted for the points redeemed within 48 hours.

You must redeem at least 5,000 points in order to use Pay with Points. Points are redeemed at a value of 1 cent per point when booking flights or making Fine Hotels & Resorts reservations. Other eligible travel receives only 0.7 cents per point. NerdWallet values Membership Rewards points at 2.8 cents per point if you take advantage of transferring to and booking through travel partners, so the redemption rates in the travel portal are significantly below our ideal value.

If you need to cancel your reservation, you'll receive a statement credit on your card for the cash equivalent. Members who would rather have the unused Membership Rewards points returned to their accounts must contact American Express customer service at 800-297-3276. Terms apply.

3. Upgrade flights with points

Eligible flights booked with cash can be upgraded using your American Express Membership Rewards points. You'll receive 1 cent per point credit towards the cost when upgrading a flight with points (which is again below our AmEx point valuation ).

To upgrade your flight with points, select your airline and provide your reservation details in the AmEx travel portal. You will be notified if your flight is eligible or not. If your flight is eligible, you can submit an offer to the airline for the upgrade. The airline will accept or reject your bid between one and five days of your flight's departure and you'll receive a decision via email.

If your upgrade offer is accepted, the points will be deducted from your account. Your statement will show a charge and a credit for the corresponding points.

» Learn more: You can now use AmEx points to bid on flight upgrades

4. Discounted international flights through AmEx IAP

Platinum cardholders have access to discounted flights through International Airline Program (IAP) , which allows members to book first, business and premium economy at a discount on select airlines and routes. Plus, you'll receive 5x Membership Rewards points on the booking when using your The Platinum Card® from American Express or The Business Platinum Card® from American Express to pay for the flight. Terms apply.

There are 25 airlines that participate in this program. You can book refundable and nonrefundable tickets for up to eight passengers through the IAP. Tickets can be paid with your card, points or a combination of the two. You will have to pay a $39 nonrefundable ticketing fee, however the discount received on these tickets should outweigh the fee.

5. Cancel For Any Reason insurance

CFAR is shorthand for an insurance policy that allows you to cancel your trip for any reason whatsoever and receive a refund. In May 2022, AmEx launched its own version of CFAR coverage for airfare booked through the travel portal using an AmEx card.

This feature, called Trip Cancel Guard, will get you up to a 75% reimbursement on nonrefundable airfare costs, provided you cancel at least two calendar days out from your departure. You'll need to purchase Trip Cancel Guard coverage at the point of booking and if you cancel, whether through the airline directly or through AmEx Travel, you can request reimbursement online or over the phone.

» Learn more: The guide to Cancel For Any Reason (CFAR) travel insurance

6. 35% points rebate with The Business Platinum Card® from American Express

When The Business Platinum Card® from American Express cardholder book flights using points through the AmEx travel portal, they can receive up to 35% of their points back . The benefit is available on first or business class flights on any airline and all economy flights with their chosen airline. This benefit provides up to 500,000 points back per calendar year.

However, as with all AmEx credits , it's not as straightforward as you may hope. You will have to designate the airline for the 35% rebate and the airline must be the same as the one chosen for the $200 airline incidental credit .

7. Fine Hotels & Resorts

Fine Hotels & Resorts is a collection of resorts and benefits available only to Platinum Card members. There are over 2,000 properties worldwide that participate in this program. When making reservations with Fine Hotels & Resorts for one night or more, you'll receive the following benefits:

$200 statement credit provided once per year.

Noon check-in (when available).

Room upgrade upon arrival (when available).

Daily breakfast for two.

Guaranteed 4 pm late checkout.

Complimentary in-room WiFi.

Unique property benefit valued at least $100.

These benefits rival those that many travelers receive when booking directly with hotels to obtain elite status perks. Some locations also offer a last-night free benefit, depending upon when you make your reservation. Terms apply.

8. The Hotel Collection

AmEx Gold and Platinum cardholders receive elite status-level perks at more than 600 hotels worldwide. When you stay for two nights or more, you'll receive a $100 resort credit and an upgrade upon arrival (when available). In addition, you can use your AmEx Membership Rewards credit card to book and pay for your reservation entirely or partially with your points.

While you can book travel over the phone with an agent, it is often quicker and more convenient to make your reservations through the AmEx Travel portal.

amex travel portal header

Here's how to book travel in the American Express travel portal:

Go to americanexpress.com/en-us/travel/ .

Log in with your username and password.

Select flights, hotels, flight + hotel, cars, or cruises.

Enter your travel dates, cities and other relevant information.

Choose options based on your trip.

Pay with your American Express credit card, points, or a combination.

Since you need an American Express card to make reservations through AmEx travel, you may already hold a card that offers complimentary travel insurance . If you don’t get travel insurance perks through your AmEx card, you can purchase Trip Cancel Guard through when making your booking.

Trip Cancel Guard works similarly to CFAR in that it allows you to cancel your trip for any reason whatsoever and get up to a 75% reimbursement of your travel costs as long as the cancellation is made two full days before your trip.

What is the AmEx Travel cancellation policy?

When you book travel through the American Express travel portal, you may be eligible to cancel your reservation within 24 hours and get a full refund. However, the cancellation policy is determined by the airline.

As such, AmEx instructs travelers to refer to the cancellation policy on the itinerary or reach out to customer service with any questions. Terms apply.

There are many appealing reasons why travelers want to book reservations with the AmEx travel portal. However, there are some downsides as well. These are some of the most common reasons why you shouldn't:

Low value for your points. Redeeming points through the AmEx travel portal yields a value of 1 cent per point or less. That's at least a 50% reduction compared to our value of Membership Rewards points.

Complicated customer service. Resolving flight or hotel reservation issues becomes more complicated when you book through a third party such as AmEx travel. The airline or hotel blames the booking agency and may not immediately resolve the problem in some instances. However, providers have no scapegoat when you book direct.

No hotel elite status benefits or loyalty credits. Most hotels require you to book directly to receive elite status benefits, stay credits or earn points. For travelers looking to take advantage of their elite status or earn status for the next year, booking AmEx travel hotel reservations is not a good idea.

Despite the above policy, hotels booked through Fine Hotels & Resorts allow you to earn elite night credit and earn loyalty perks associated with your elite status level on any hotel reservations — regardless if you book in the portal or not.

The AmEx travel portal offers numerous benefits for all American Express cardholders. If you have a Membership Rewards credit card, you can pay for all or part of eligible travel reservations using your points.

And any portion that you pay with your Membership Rewards card can earn up to 5x points. AmEx Travel also offers two hotel collections that provide additional perks similar to elite status benefits.

  • Exclusive deals on lower rates for hotel bookings or reservations
  • Room Upgrade upon check-in when staying 2 nights or longer
  • up to $100 in hotel credits, which can be used to spend on dining, spa and other eligible activities when staying 2 nights or longer
  • 5x Membership reward points for Platinum cardholders, 2x membership reward points for Gold cardholders on prepaid reservations or bookings.

The Fine Hotels & Resorts Program

The Fine Hotels & Resorts program, also known as "Amex FHR" or "FHR," has a suite of benefits such as daily breakfast for two, guaranteed 4pm check-out, complimentary WiFi, and room upgrades when available.

The Fine hotel & Resorts program is only available for American Express Platinum cardholders and above.

When booking through the Fine Hotels & Resorts program, you'll also receive a $100 experience credit for services at the spa or food and beverages at the hotel–note that this benefit varies based on the property.

The FHR program is entirely different from the Amex Travel Portal, so points and credits aren't guaranteed in this program. Be sure to check up on whether your points count towards the FHR program with Amex Travel's representative before booking!

Cruise Privileges Program

American Express Platinum cardholders also have access to the Cruise Privileges Program in the Amex Travel portal.

Platinum Card and Centurion Card Members can receive amenities like $100-$300 in onboard credit, as well as 2x points per dollar spent per booking when using the Amex Travel portal. These benefits are available on sailings of five nights or more and may include additional perks specific to each cruise line.

Platinum Destinations Vacations

Platinum Destinations Vacations is another perk of using the Amex Travel portal as an American Express Platinum cardholder. Cardholders can receive up to 2x points per dollar spent on a qualifying independent or escorted vacation package through Amex Travel.

Additional Amex Travel Benefits

Another key benefit of booking travel through the Amex Travel portal is that users can receive additional points on bookings when using their American Express credit card.

American Express Platinum cardholders can earn 5x points on flights and prepaid hotels, and American Express® Gold cardholders can earn 3x points on flights. American Express® Green cardholders can earn 3x points on all travel. If you're looking to rack up more American Express Member Rewards points, this is a quick way to do so.

For a comprehensive list of all available benefits associated with the Amex Travel portal, visit the  Amex Travel website .

Amex travel credit card

Is Amex Travel worth it?

Amex Travel is an easy-to-use, convenient travel booking portal, but it might not be a good option for travelers looking to get the best value for their American Express Membership Rewards points.

While always changing, the points-to-dollar conversion rate has historically yielded less value than transferring points to partner programs like Delta or Marriott. This is worth noting because better value often means you'll get more out of the points you accrue.

Further, you aren't guaranteed to earn loyalty points with outside partners since Amex Travel is a third-party booking service.

For travelers looking to enhance their loyalty status, booking directly with the hotel group might make more sense. For airline miles, you might still be able to earn loyalty points or miles with the airline when booking through Amex Travel.

Be sure to check with the airline before booking if you aim to receive miles for your flight. Note that basic economy fares, whether found on Amex Travel or another website, are sometimes not eligible for earning miles or enhancing your loyalty status.

Something important to note is that a fee is added using the service, which is built into the cost of a ticket. This fee is unavoidable and can be higher if you call to book as opposed to using the online booking platform. The fees are waived if you have the Platinum Card, Business Platinum Card, or the Centurion Card.

Amextravel island

For travelers considering convenience as their main priority in the booking process, Amex Travel makes it easier than ever to book a trip.

Overall, Amex Travel is worth checking during the booking process to compare prices and points conversions on flights or hotels you might be interested in.

However, for the budget traveler or the points-and-miles traveler, Amex Travel might not be worth it to use while booking your next vacation because of the low redemption value of American Express Membership Rewards points in the portal.

If you're an American Express cardholder and want to earn more Membership Rewards points when booking travel, Amex Travel is a great option. If you do not have any American Express credit cards, there is no real advantage to using Amex Travel compared to any other third-party booking service.

With over 4,000 branches and $1.7 trillion in assets, Wells Fargo is the third largest bank in the U.S. Yet Wells Fargo credit cards offerings have long lagged in popularity behind competitors such as Chase and American Express. But, the introduction of the Wells Fargo Autograph Journey℠ Visa® Card * The information for the Wells Fargo Autograph Journey℠ Visa® Card has been collected independently by Blueprint. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer. includes the addition of airline and hotel transfer partners to the Wells Fargo Rewards program, adding appeal for travel rewards enthusiasts. Here’s what you need to know about the Wells Fargo Rewards program.

How to earn Wells Fargo Rewards

Wells Fargo now offers three main cards that earn Wells Fargo Rewards:

  • Wells Fargo Active Cash® Card : The no-annual-fee card earns 2% cash rewards on purchases.
  • Wells Fargo Autograph℠ Card : The no-annual-fee-card earns 3 points per $1 at restaurants, travel, gas stations, transit, popular streaming services and phone plans and 1 point per $1 on other purchases.
  • Wells Fargo Autograph Journey℠ Visa® Card * The information for the Wells Fargo Autograph Journey℠ Visa® Card has been collected independently by Blueprint. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer. : For a $95 annual fee, the card earns 5 points per $1 on hotels, 4 points per $1 on airlines, 3 points per $1 on other travel and dining and 1 point per $1 on other purchases.

You can pool the rewards between all three cards, according to a Wells Fargo spokesperson. This makes holding a combination of the Active Cash and one of the Autograph cards appealing as you can use the cards strategically to earn elevated rewards on all of your spending.

How to redeem Wells Fargo Rewards

With the Active Cash and the Autograph cards, points can be redeemed as a credit to your qualifying Wells Fargo credit card, checking account or mortgage. You can also use your rewards to pay for purchases from participating merchants. Other options include redeeming rewards for travel reservations through Wells Fargo or gift cards. Wells Fargo Autograph Journey and Autograph cardholders also will have the option starting April 4, 2024 of transferring rewards to six participating airline and hotel loyalty programs.

What are Wells Fargo Rewards worth?

When redeeming your points for cash back, statement credits, purchases, travel reservations booked through Wells Fargo and gift cards, Wells Fargo points are worth one cent each. When you transfer points to airline and hotel partners, the value will vary based on the partner loyalty program.

Best ways to use Wells Fargo Rewards

Transferring to airline or hotel partners when the program goes live April 4, 2024 may be the best way to redeem your Wells Fargo Rewards points. That’s because it’s possible to get a value of several cents per point or mile, especially when you’re able to redeem your rewards for expensive airline tickets or hotel stays. For example, the Air France-KLM Flying Blue frequent flyer program may offer business class tickets to Europe for 55,000 miles each way. If you’re able to redeem 110,000 miles for a round-trip flight that would normally cost around $5,000, you can receive nearly five cents in value per point transferred.

Another option is the Choice Hotels Choice Privileges program, which can offer extremely valuable redemptions for hotels in places such as Europe or Japan, and for all-inclusive resorts in the Caribbean. For example, an award night for a room with one double bed at the Comfort Hotel Bolivar in Rome, Italy in June 2024 is 25,000 points, but the cash price for this property in the heart of the city is $685 per night. This results in a value of roughly 2.7 cents per point redeemed.

Wells Fargo transfer partners

Starting April 4, 2024, the Wells Fargo’s Autograph Journey and Autograph cards have five airline partners and one hotel partner:

  • Choice Privileges®
  • Air France-KLM Flying Blue
  • Avianca LifeMiles
  • British Airways Executive Club
  • Aer Lingus AerClub
  • Iberia Plus

Final verdict

Until recently, Wells Fargo Rewards was a simple program that allowed cardholders to redeem their points for one cent each towards cash back, statement credits, gift cards or travel reservations. But, with the introduction of the Autograph Journey card and the addition of transfer partners as a redemption option — cardholders now have the opportunity to turn their rewards into airline miles and hotel points, potentially raising their value to far more than one cent each.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

Wells Fargo Rewards points are worth just one cent each towards statement credits, gift cards and travel reservations booked through Wells Fargo. However, Autograph Journey and Autograph cardmembers are able to transfer their rewards to airline and hotel partners, potentially unlocking redemptions worth at least several cents per point or mile.

Wells Fargo Rewards generally will not expire as long as your account is open and active, but check your card’s fine print to be sure.

If you redeem your points for travel booked through Wells Fargo Rewards, points are worth one cent each towards flights. So a $200 fight will cost 20,000 points. However, Wells Fargo Autograph cardholders can transfer their points to airline partners. The airline miles are redeemed through the airline, and the number of points required will vary based on the flight chosen and the rules of the frequent flyer program.

Yes, you can transfer Wells Fargo points to another person by going to the Wells Fargo Rewards page, logging in and choosing the “Share” option.
