Everything to Know About Seattle’s Port Valet — Free Cruise Luggage Transfer Service

Want to explore Seattle after your cruise and not sure what to do with your luggage? Or maybe you simply want to have someone else take care of your bags instead of having to lug them from the cruise port to the airport… while also being checked-in for your flight before you even leave the ship.

In that case, you’re in luck…

Port Valet service in Seattle

The Port of Seattle and Seattle-Tacoma International Airport have a “Port Valet” service for cruise passengers that can save you a lot of time and headache. If you’re taking a cruise from Seattle and plan on flying home from the airport, then you’ll want to take advantage of this little-known cruise perk.

The Benefits of Seattle’s Port Valet Service

With the Port Valet service , cruisers disembarking in Seattle and headed to the airport don’t have to worry about schlepping their bags. The complimentary service will transfer your luggage from ship directly to the plane. In addition, you will be checked in for your flight and provided with boarding passes before you even leave the ship.

What this means is if you want to explore the city before your flight, you can do so without wondering what to do with your luggage. And even if you are headed straight to the airport, you can do so without having to carry heavy bags.

At the same time, since you are already checked in, that means when you arrive at Seattle-Tacoma airport, you simply head straight to the security gate instead of having to wait in line to get a boarding pass or drop off bags.

The service is free, and passengers pay only normal baggage fees an airline may charge for either checking a bag or excess baggage, not for the transfer service.

How to Sign Up for Port Valet

So how can you take advantage?

First, you’ll have to enroll. That can be done on the Port Valet website up until 4:00 p.m. the first day of your cruise. After that time, you can still enroll on the ship. It’s a good idea to simply enroll early online before the cruise. If you do wait, any questions you have should be able to be address by the Guest Services desk on the ship.

The night before your cruise ends, you’ll have airline boarding passes and special luggage tags delivered. Place these tags on your checked bags and then set them outside of your room. The ship’s crew will pick them up for you.

From there, your luggage is delivered directly to your airport, so you don’t have to check those bags. The next time you see them will be on the luggage carousel when you land back home.

Want to track your bags? You can do so at https://portvalet.maketraveleasier.com

Currently, Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, Delta, JetBlue, Southwest Airlines,  and United Airlines participate in the program. If flying a different airline, then you won’t be able to take advantage.

Frequently Asked Questions

seattle cruise luggage valet program

What flight times work for the Port Valet service? What if I fly out the next day? Before you sign up, you’ll want to be sure your flight falls within the window to be eligible for Port Valet. For most airlines, the flight must be between 12 p.m. on debarkation day and 1:30 a.m. the next morning. For Southwest, the eligible window is between 12 p.m. and 4 p.m. on the day the ship arrives back in Seattle.

Can I use this service if flying international? Yes, the Port Valet service says you can use it even if flying international. The one exception is if you fly Delta. At this time only domestic flights on Delta are eligible.

Is there a charge for the Port Valet service in Seattle? No, the service is free. There is no additional charge to use the Port Valet.

What if I have a charge for a checked bag on my airline? Many airlines charge for checked bags. In that case, Port Valet says that any airline baggage fees are applied to your onboard account on the cruise ship. You’ll then pay them with the payment method on file, just like any other charges during the cruise.

What if I need something from my bag after it is picked up? You should be sure that you have everything you need from your luggage before you set it outside your door. With the Port Valet service, once your bags are picked up you won’t see them again until you land at your home airport. You won’t have a chance to get anything from them once they are picked up the night before your cruise gets back to port.

What if I’m not traveling on one of the airlines offering the service? As mentioned above, Alaska, American, Delta, JetBlue, Southwest, and United all are participants in the program. That should cover the vast majority of passengers. If you are flying out on a different airline, then you’ll still need to bring your luggage with you the traditional way.

What Passengers Think of the Program

Obviously having a completely free service that takes care of your luggage should be popular. And while not many people seem to know about the service (its only been around a few years), those that have used it rave about the program.

One passenger had this to say :

“It is GREAT!! You are given your airline docs (we were flying Southwest) and baggage checks on the night before docking. We attached them to our bags, put them in the hallway, and the next time we saw them was on the baggage carousel in Tucson. We walked off the ship with our carry-on in Seattle at 6:30, hailed a cab, and we were checked in and at our gate at the airport by 7:30. We were WAY early for our 11:30 AM flight, but that was fine. I had been concerned that 11:30 was too early, but everything worked out as well as we could have ever wanted. Seattle really had its act together, both for check-in at the pier and for disembarkation. I highly recommend the service!”

FROM THE SHIP IS IT A MOTOR COACH THAT TAKES US INTO SEATTLE? WHERE IN SEATTLE DOES IT TAKE US? HOW DO WE GET TO THE AIRPORT?

Is there a limit on how many bags per person.

Not that we know of, although charges will apply via your airline.

If I hae 9 pax on one air res with American Airlines should I put all pax on the form for Port Valet or should each room on Carnival do their own???

I saw where it said that if baggage fees are required by your airline, the fees will be applied to your sail and sign account. What about if you have already prepaid for return luggage fees online through the airline , will there still be fees added to your sail and sign account?

There shouldn’t be, but definitely check your account just to be sure.

We are flying home on Southwest and have purchased the SW Early Bird feature to be checked in 36 hours out automatically. Will Port Valet be able to “see” we are already checked in?

Don’t know that!

So do we still have to lug around our carry on bags or can we have them held and get them just before boarding?

Sarah — NCL Bliss on Saturday. See you there. Signed up in advance for the port valet service, but got the same cancellation notice from them. Not sure I understood the explanation.

This article seems to have lots of great information! However, don’t plan on this service on your cruise without trying to sign up ahead of time. I’m leaving in two days on the first Alaskan cruise of the season, and Port Valet informed me (and others on our cruise) that they weren’t offering their service for our cruise, even though we meet all the qualifications on their website, because the “airport is experiencing delays.” Be forewarned.

Hello… Is there a form, that can be completed, prior to the Cruise?

You can enroll online ahead of time here:

https://maketraveleasier.com/PortValet

Seattle valet…can the luggage remain overnight at the airport? We return on Sat. but don’t fly out till Sunday

Oh, not sure about that. I’d be worried about having my luggage out of my hands that long to be honest.

No, it’s for day of travel only. You must fly out by 11:59pm day of your disembarkment.

The website says by 1:30 a.m. the next morning unless flying Southwest. Close to midnight, but only by about 90 more minutes.

We get free baggage fees on Delta with an AmEx card and fly Sky Priority. Is that still the case with this service?

Not sure of the logistics in this case. Might give a call to the cruise line to see.

Hello Gordon, Did you end up using the service? Were you charged? I have free checked bags with an airline credit card too so I was just curious what happened in your case. Thanks.

Is this service offered in San Diego?

Hello, my ship docks in seattle on july 24th 2020, however my plane out of seattle leaves on july 25th at 23:50 , can I still take advantage of this program? this would help me a lot because I would not have to carry my big suitcase all around seattle for basically two days

We wouldn’t want to risk it. That’s a long time to be away from your bags. Your hotel would likely have a bell desk where you can hold your bags. They will often hold them even after you’ve checked out.

hi. We are taking a red-eye out of SeaTac at 10PM on the day we disembark. Is that too late to use this service? I can’t find any time limit, but also value my luggage:) thanks!

Not sure of a timeline either, but given that it’s the same day, we can’t imagine it being an issue.

I paid for your Port Valet Service on the RC Ovation of the Seas departing Aug 2 and returning August 9. (today is August 23) I placed my bag outside the room with the luggage tag delivered with the Southwest Airlines boarding pass, which included a luggage claim number, the night before arriving at the port as instructed. The bag was removed from there by your port valet service.

In short my bag, with two weeks of clothing, was lost! In addition to the airline bag tag there was a yellow and black paisley ribbon on the bag for quick identification on a luggage carousel, which makes it less likely to have been taken by mistake. I filed claims with both SW airlines and RC cruise lost and found. The cruise line claims no responsibility or reimbursement obligation as they put it on the port valet service. Who can I file a claim with? I estimate that the contents were worth at least $1500. I ‘ve spoken with several people at the cruise line and baggage company Bags, Inc. everyday since returning.

So far each pretty much said too bad for your poor luck, we have no responsibility. This is unacceptable. I and the other 17 people in my group will never take another cruise with Royal Caribbean or out of the port of Seattle if this is not resolved. Please advise.

Sorry to hear about your lost bag. We aren’t the port, cruise line, or baggage company. We are simply a website that offers information about cruising. It sounds like you are on the right path in contacting all the responsible parties, even if they are trying to pass the buck as you say.

Did you have travel insurance? That may be your best bet at this point. If you find you aren’t getting anywhere contacting the companies directly, we’ve seen some people have success getting issues resolved by posting on social media about their issues.

FYI, almost all credit card/ travel insurance policies won’t cover the lost luggage with their standard policies since the luggage/port valet is a third party. You have to ask if 3rd party baggage handling coverage can be added which would obviously be an additional fee and not every provider is even willing to cover a 3rd party. To avoid further miscommunication, I would recommend you specifically point out that it is a 3rd party and not a cruiseline or airline run service. Learned this the hard way.

Hi we are currently on the ovation of the seas arriving on 8/9/19 and flying out of SeaTac the same day. We are flying in southwest but signed up for the early bird check in. Is it an issue to be able to take advantage of the valet service? I am hearing mixed things from the staff onboard the ship.

Obviously the people on the ship should know best, but this is exactly what the valet program was made for. We’re not sure what the issue might be. We’d suggest going down to talk to Guest Services.

I will be arriving at the Seattle Airport very early in the morning the day of my cruise. The cruise is not scheduled to leave until 5pm. Although I know I will need to check in earlier than that, can I drop off my luggage at the port earlier ?

You can, but only your bags that you are checking. Any carry-on will obviously need to stay with you.

Thank you for your kind response.

We will be on Royal Caribbean Ovation of the Seas, arriving back in Seattle 8/23/19, my flight is on 8/24/19 06:25 am. Will I be able to use this service?

We would suggest not doing that given that you don’t fly out until the next day. If you are staying the night somewhere, then you can likely have them hold your bags even before you check in.

We are flying with United and there will be baggage fees. How are the fees handled. Thanks, S.L.

We just called the port and were told the baggage fees charged by the airline are charged to your shipboard account.

Why to Use Port Valet While Cruising From Seattle

Last Updated on August 26, 2022

Imagine this, you just finished a week-long cruise sailing past the majestic mountains and cleaving glaciers of Alaska. The ship finally arrives back in Seattle, and at 7 am, you experience the rude awakening of leaving the beautiful vessel and returning to reality. You lug your 50-pound suitcases down stairs and through long hallways to make your way off the ship. Now what do you do? Seattle/Tacoma Airport is about 30 minutes away. If you have a late flight, how do to fill all that time? You could sight-see, but carrying around all your bags filled with a week’s worth of clothes and souvenirs will quickly take the fun out of that. That’s where Seattle’s Port Valet comes in.

What is Port Valet?

Port Valet makes it easier for cruisers to explore the city of Seattle after they get off the ship but before their flight home. The service will take your bags from the cruise ship and check them with your airline so they’ll be on your flight home without you having to lug them around the city. It’s run by the Port of Seattle in an effort to increase tourism in the city.

Why use Port Valet?

Port Valet is an especially useful service for cruisers who live on the East Coast. Most flights from Seattle to the East Coast leave early in the morning or late at night, with just a handful of midday flight options. While cruise ships arrive back at the port as early as 7 am, it takes time to debark the thousands of guests, so many of the earlier flights aren’t an option. For example, Carnival Cruise Line recommends not booking a flight before 11:45 am in Seattle.

With few mid-day options, you could easily have 8 or 9 hours to fill before your flight home. With Port Valet, you can use that time to visit the Space Needle or the Museum of Pop Culture without worrying about your bags.

blue suitcase in airport

How does Port Valet work?

It’s straightforward to use Port Valet. You simply fill out your information on a form, put a special tag on your suitcase, and then put out your large luggage the night before the cruise is over. The cruise staff will then take your suitcase and send it directly to the airport once the ship docks. Then, your bags will be given to your airline to be put on your plane. You’ll claim your bags from the baggage claim at your home airport just like you usually would. It’s an amazingly seamless process.

TIP: Remember that you won’t see your bags until you get home, so don’t pack essential things like medications, travel pillows, etc., in the bags you’re dropping off.

As part of the program, you’re also checked in for your flight for most airlines. When you finally arrive at the airport, you just go right to TSA and then to your gate. Port Valet provides a form on their website that lets you track exactly where your luggage is in case you’re someone who likes to stay on top of things. You can also use trackers like Apple’s AirTags or Tile Bluetooth Tracker to track your luggage using an app on your phone.

cruise ship hallway with suitcases

How much does Port Valet cost?

Port Valet is completely free. It’s all covered by the Port of Seattle. If your airline requires that you pay a fee for a checked bag, it can be charged directly to your cruise account.

Tip: With Port Valet, they don’t weight your bags before checking them in, so you won’t be penalized if you bought too many souvenirs and your bag is over the 50 pound limit.

How do I sign up for Port Valet?

You have two options. The easiest way is to fill out the forms left in your cabin on your Alaskan cruise. You’ll provide your flight and cabin information, and Port Valet will take care of the rest.

Alternatively, you can prebook it online at their website . It’s not the sleekest of website interfaces, but it gets the job done. If you want to book online, you have until 8 pm on the night of your first cruise day.

If you have questions or concerns about the process, wait and book it until you’re on the ship. The ship’s staff is well-versed in the program and how it works.

Also, keep in mind you may be rejected from the program. It’s not the cruise line or Port Valet that makes this call, but the airline. It can be due to things like flight times, changes, or other policies. It’s a good idea to have a plan B in mind, as you won’t be notified until the night before you leave the cruise ship.

Which cruise lines participate in Port Valet?

Most major cruise lines participate in the program. That includes:

  • Celebrity Cruises
  • Holland America
  • Norwegian Cruise Line
  • Princess Cruises
  • Royal Caribbean Cruise Line

Update 8/2022 – Carnival is no longer participating in this program

Which airlines participate in Port Valet?

Most major airlines leaving out of Seattle/Tacoma International Airport (SEA) participate in Port Valet. That includes:

  • Alaska Airlines
  • American Airlines
  • Delta Airlines
  • Horizon Air
  • Southwest Airlines
  • United Airlines

To use this service, your flight must leave after 11 am and before 2 am on debarkation day.

How do I get to Seattle/Tacoma International Airport?

This program only takes care of your bags. You’re responsible for getting to the airport yourself. Seattle has an excellent transportation system, so you could easily grab an Uber, Lyft, taxi, or even use Seattle’s Light Rail system to head back to the airport after your day of exploring.

Port Valet really improves your post-cruise experience

Port Valet is a great idea, and it’s really hard to believe there’s no extra charge for it. It lets you get the full Seattle experience without having to lug around heavy bags or pay for a hotel to store them. It’s disappointing that more ports around the US don’t have similar programs.

Tip: If you’re nervous about leaving your bags out of the sight for so long or are concerned they might get lost, consider a Tile Bluetooth tracker or Apple AirTag . You can monitor where your bags are throughout your trip using an app on your phone.

However, accommodating more mega-ships will require significant infrastructure investment. It’s crucial to find a balance between tourism and environmental concerns to ensure sustainable growth for Port Ketchikan.

To tackle this issue, Port Ketchikan needs to invest in infrastructure improvements. This could include expanding existing docks or building new ones specifically designed to accommodate mega-ships. By doing so, the port can attract more cruise ships and increase its capacity to handle the growing number of visitors.

Additionally, it is essential to prioritize environmental sustainability in these infrastructure investments. This can be achieved through incorporating eco-friendly practices and technologies, such as using renewable energy sources and implementing waste management systems.

Investing in infrastructure while considering environmental sustainability will not only enhance Port Ketchikan’s capacity to accommodate more mega-ships but also ensure the long-term viability of the cruise ship industry in the region.

Overall, this collaboration holds great potential for Port Ketchikan to unlock the benefits and opportunities offered by mega-ship expansion.

Balancing Tourism and Environmental Concerns

Striking a balance between promoting tourism and addressing environmental concerns is a crucial consideration for our community. As we explore the potential expansion of mega-ships in Port Ketchikan, it is essential to conduct a comprehensive environmental impact assessment. This data-driven approach will help us understand the potential consequences and make informed decisions.

Finding a sustainable balance is of utmost importance. While mega-ships can bring economic benefits and increased tourism revenue, we must ensure that our environment is not compromised. By conducting thorough assessments, we can identify any potential negative impacts on our marine ecosystem, air quality, and local communities.

This analytical approach will guide our decision-making process and enable us to implement measures to mitigate any adverse effects. We must invest in infrastructure and technologies that minimize pollution and protect our natural resources. Through careful planning and collaboration with stakeholders, we can strike a sustainable balance that benefits both our community and the environment.

What Are the Specific Concerns That Port Ketchikan Has About the Increasing Number of Mega-Ships?

My concerns about the increasing number of mega-ships in Port Ketchikan include the limited number of docks available and the need for a solution to accommodate more ships. Impacts could include increased tourism and economic benefits.

How Does the Presence of Mega-Ships in Port Ketchikan Impact the Local Economy?

The presence of mega-ships in Port Ketchikan has a significant impact on the local economy. Their arrival brings a surge of tourism and economic growth, making them a valuable asset for the community.

What Specific Expertise and Resources Does Norwegian Cruise Line Bring to the Negotiations With Port Ketchikan?

Norwegian Cruise Line brings negotiation expertise and valuable resources to the table in discussions with Port Ketchikan. Their involvement can potentially address the issue of increasing mega-ships and expand the infrastructure to accommodate them.

How Does the Cruise Ship Industry Contribute to the Overall Economy of Alaska?

The cruise ship industry significantly boosts Alaska’s economy. For example, in 2019, it generated over $2 billion in visitor spending and supported thousands of jobs. Its impact on tourism and local businesses cannot be overstated.

What Potential Infrastructure Investments Does Port Ketchikan Need to Make in Order to Accommodate More Mega-Ships?

To accommodate more mega-ships, Port Ketchikan needs to make infrastructure investments such as expanding dock capacity and improving port facilities. These investments will support economic growth and attract more tourists to the area.

What Strategies Did Port St. Maarten Use to Revitalize and Grow, and Can They Be Applied to Port Ketchikan’s Expansion?

The revitalizing Port St. Maarten CEO implemented various strategies to promote growth, such as expanding cruise ship facilities and improving cargo operations. Similar tactics could be applied to Port Ketchikan’s expansion, including enhancing infrastructure and increasing tourism partnerships to spur economic development.

In conclusion, the potential for mega-ship expansion in Port Ketchikan is undeniable. With concerns about the increasing number of mega-ships and limited docks, it is imperative that we find a solution to accommodate their growth.

Collaboration with Norwegian Cruise Line presents a promising opportunity to address this issue and unlock the economic benefits that mega-ships can bring. Balancing tourism and environmental concerns is crucial, but with careful planning and investment in infrastructure, Port Ketchikan can thrive and further boost Alaska’s economy.

As the saying goes, "The tide waits for no man," and it is important that we seize this opportunity to ensure a prosperous future for Port Ketchikan.

Anyone use Domodedovo (DME) airport in Moscow

I am looking at booking my own air for my river cruise and have seats held using miles. The only problem is that AA (partner SwissAir specifically) can not get me out of Sheremetyevo SVO - they can only get me out of Domodedovo.

My flight is at 7:25 in the morning. Has anyone had transfers with Amadeus to Domodedovo or is it easy to arrange for a private taxi to Domodedovo.

My agent is out of town for a week. I may try calling Amadeus directly but if anyone has first hand knowledge - that would be great.

Theresa, as I just posted in your other thread, it can take literally HOURS to get from Domodedovo to where the river boats are docked. I just returned last night from my first riverboat cruise and heard horror stories of how it took four hours to get from Domodedovo. Just be prepared that it could take that long. The Moscow traffic is mind-bogglingly horrendous and their definition of "highway" is our definition of a local 4-lane road. The pier where they dock the riverboats is a distance on the outskirts of the city and there aren't many options or short cuts to get to it.

Also, make sure you pack some clothing in your carryon. Twelve people arriving in Domodedovo didn't have their luggage arrive for days and three never had it for the entire cruise. Out of 160 people, that's a pretty nasty percentage.

Pam - Welcome back!

Thank you for your insight. I fly into St. Petersburg and will leave out of Moscow so this probably will be better. I do have a 7:30 am flight which probably means that I will leave the ship at 4 am or so. It is my last day so I guess it is ok. Hopefully this means I won't lose my luggage going.....!

I am using FF miles and can not get to Sherman airport as none of AA's partners go there.

When you get rested and get back into the swing of things - I have a million questions for you. I know you did Viking and I will be on Amadeus so there are a few things different but we basically go to the same places.

I do not have any pre or post cruise hotels. Our trip is 12 days (14 with flying) and I don't want to be away for much longer. I did try to fly in the day before to St. Petersburg but FF miles would not let me. If they change my flights - I will try to fly in the day before.

I was in Russia for a week in 1988. Spent 3 days in Moscow and 3 days in Leningrad. So it will be interesting to see the changes since Communism. I was a Poli Sci/History Major in college and took a lot of Russian classes so I am pretty familiar with the history but definitely need a refresher!

I am so glad you enjoyed your experience. The fact that you decided to go there this year sort of gave me an incentive to look around and I came across the Amadeus trip that interested me.

seattle cruise luggage valet program

Does luggage storage work on Sundays? The website says "except Sat and Sund" , is that true?

Are there lockers where you can leave your stuff for a few hours?

' class=

I'm pretty sure they work every day, the "8:00 to 18:00 except Saturday and Sunday" next to the phone number must refer to when someone is supposed to answer the phone. Actually they won't pick up the phone even right now, at 8:35 ;)

Of course lockers operate rounf the clock. There auto lockers for smaller items, and manually operated for any luggage. Payment is usually for the day, until midnight. Pass midnight - new charge. Enjoy

thanks guys! I was getting worried :-)
