London Airports

Heathrow Airport (LHR) is consistently ranked as one of the top five busiest airports in the world. Annually, the facility transports over 72 million people which should come as no surprise considering Heathrow serves over 180 different destinations. Primarily a resource for international travelers, the establishment exudes a vibe of efficiency and professionalism. Don’t be awestruck by LHR’s massive size though; there are plenty of inviting lounges, restaurants, and shops to make you feel more comfortable. Additionally, there are free buses and trains to shuttle you around the airport in case you need to get to a different terminal or catch a connecting flight. More must-know information about London Heathrow is available at Flights.com .

Transportation from the Airport

There are a myriad of options to get to Londontown once you arrive at Heathrow. Utilize the city’s public ground transportation to get to the center of the action. The Underground, fondly referred to as “the Tube”, is a metro system which serves not only the various neighborhoods of London but parts of Hertfordshire, Essex, and Buckinghamshire counties as well. If you choose to forego the Tube, catch a ride on the Heathrow Express. The Heathrow Express is a high-speed train which takes about 15 minutes to get to the centralized Paddington Station. After you’re done saying hello to Paddington Bear at his very own gift shop, exit the station or board a connecting bus or train to further your travels in the city.

Lastly, choose to avoid the hustle and bustle of public transportation by renting a car for your stay in London ahead of time here on Expedia.com. This way, your journey can begin as soon as you land.

Frequently asked questions

  • The secret to having a great travel experience is to plan ahead. So, let’s start with the basics: passport, boarding pass, bank cards and vital medications. Next, bring on board items that’ll help keep you occupied, like your laptop or a juicy novel. It’s also wise to pack your chargers, a quality neck pillow and a pair of earplugs. And of course, don’t forget to toss in toiletry items like a toothbrush, cleansing wipes and a fresh set of clothes.
  • While the list of restricted items can differ between airlines, the general guide to follow is nothing sharp, flammable or explosive. This includes things like knives, scissors, fuels and bleaching agents. Sports equipment like ice skates, and objects that could injure passengers, such as pepper spray and guns, can’t come on board with you either.
  • Comfort should be your prime concern when choosing what to wear during your flight. Consider your choice of footwear with care too, as swollen feet and ankles are a common occurrence. Flat, slightly roomy shoes are your best bet.
  • A condition called deep vein thrombosis (DVT) can pose a risk on long-distance flights. It’s the result of blood clots forming due to poor circulation. Doing leg and foot exercises in your seat is a great way to prevent this from occurring. Wearing a high-quality pair of compression socks or tights is also a wise idea.
  • Be sure to keep your travel documents and passport within close reach. They’ll be the first things you’ll be asked to present to airport security.
  • The X-ray machine comes next. Remove anything metal on you that is likely to beep. This includes things like earphones or headphones, as well as heavy coats or jackets. They’ll all need to go on the X-ray conveyor belt.
  • All your electronic devices, including your laptop and phone, will also need to be scanned separately.
  • Any gels or liquids, such as hair oil or hand cream, that you want to bring on board need to be in containers no larger than 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters). They must also all fit inside a quart-size (one liter), clear zip-close bag.
  • It’s also possible you’ll be asked to take your shoes off for scanning, so wearing lightweight sneakers is always a wise idea.
  • Sharp or pointed objects (like knives and scissors) can’t be taken on board. They’ll be seized at security, so pack them in your checked suitcase.

Flights to London, England (LON)

One of the world's preeminent cities, London is as alive today as it was centuries ago, establishing itself as an international center of culture and history. While its most recognizable monuments – Big Ben, Buckingham Palace, Westminster Abbey - dot city center, expanding out from there visitors can take in the theater of West End, world-renowned art at the Tate Modern, and sample dining from across the globe. There's so much to see in this incredible city, and it will always invite you in for a nice pint at a warm pub.

Delta has flights from all over the United States to London and flies nonstop into two of London's primary airports. Fly on Delta to London-Heathrow (LHR) from Boston (BOS), Los Angeles (LAX), Seattle (SEA), Atlanta (ATL), Detroit (DTW), Salt Lake City (SLC), Minneapolis (MSP), and New York City (JFK) and into Gatwick Airport (LGW) from New York City (JFK).

London-Heathrow International, ranks as one of the busiest in the world by passenger traffic and has four passenger terminals.

London-Heathrow International Airport (LHR)

Beginning in April 2023, Delta also flies into London Gatwick from New York City (JFK). It is London's second busiest airport and has two terminals.

Gatwick Airport (LGW)

Both airports feature a variety of places to dine or shops and offer free Wi-Fi.

Free Attractions

Architecture, art, fashion, theater, literature and food are all jewels that London wears in its crown. But perhaps the most underappreciated aspect of this rather expensive city is how much you can see and do without spending a dime. Many of the city’s world-class museums, including the British Museum, the Tate Modern, the National Gallery and the Victoria & Albert are all free of charge. And that’s just a sampling. Two notable churches, St. Paul’s Church (not Cathedral) and Temple Church are also free to explore. The former was host to the first Punch and Judy show in 1662 and the latter plays a role in the Da Vinci Code. London also has more green space than any other capital in the world. In fact, nearly a third of the city is devoted to it. Visit the Kensington Gardens, home of the royal Kensington Palace residence. Stroll through Hyde Park, 350 acres of city park, where locals partake in everything from swimming and boating to tennis and horseback riding. And on Sundays, be sure to head to Speaker’s Corner to hear Londoners get up on their literal soapboxes. And of course, you can’t leave London without witnessing the changing of the guards at Buckingham Palace. The ceremony, which takes place daily at 11:30 between April and July, lasts about 45 minutes.

We wouldn't stay true to London without mentioning the city’s 150 ancient monuments. Among its most famous must-see monuments is the Tower of London, the castle along the Thames River that houses the Crown Jewels of England. There’s also Westminster Abbey, the Gothic church that has played host to at least 16 royal weddings since 1100. And no visit would be complete without spotting Big Ben, the clock tower at the Palace of Westminster, Britain’s Parliament. And if you’re looking to see it all in one fell swoop, check out the London Eye, a modern glass-enclosed Ferris wheel that affords views of it all.

Performing Arts

London is also a city of performances. The West End features a collection of theatres that’s the London equivalent of Broadway. Catch a variety of shows, musicals, Shakespearean classics and dance revues. If you’re an opera fan, the Royal Opera House is regarded as one of the world’s greatest opera houses. It’s also home to the Royal Ballet and hosts a resident symphony orchestra.

Restaurants

Though British food has historically been the butt of culinary jokes, London is no gustatory slouch. The city is home to 45 Michelin-starred restaurants and thanks in part to the diversity of its residents, London does a number of ethnic cuisines proud, from Indian and Italian to Cantonese and French.

Despite its reputation for being rainy, London actually receives less annual precipitation than a number of other popular destinations including Rome, Sydney and New York. Its summers are generally warm, verging occasionally on hot, with average July temperatures of around 75 °F. Its winters are cool and damp with only very occasional snowfall. In January, the average high is around 46 °F.

One popular choice is American Airlines which calls its loyalty points scheme AAdvantage. At the time of writing, the airline was due to celebrate the 40th anniversary of its loyalty scheme. First launched in 1981, it now boasts 67 million members across the globe.

London-bound travelers can fly into London Heathrow Airport from multiple US cities, including Boston , Chicago, Dallas, Philadelphia, and New York JFK Airport.

American Airlines to Fly to London

Another great choice is a UK airline, British Airways . For starters, it partners with American Airlines and at least ten other carriers, including Qantas and Cathay Pacific Airlines. This means you can transfer your points across and use them with their affiliated airlines.

Travelers to London can fly in with British Airways to all the London airports mentioned at the start of this review. Departure airports include domestic cities such as Edinburgh, European cities including Paris and Amsterdam, and continents including Africa and North America.

Best Budget Airlines to Fly to London

Depending on where you’re traveling from, you may want to find the cheapest fares so that you have more to spend in London’s finest bars, restaurants, galleries, and museums.

It’s fair to say that London is an expensive city. As a result, budget-conscious travelers may be more interested in landing, having spent as little as possible.

There are hundreds of budget airlines, but here’s our pick of the best that fly into London from different parts of the globe.

Norwegian Air International

Budget airline Norwegian Air International has been around since 2014. While it no longer flies from the US, it’s possible to reach London from several less far-flung destinations, including Israel, Italy, Poland, Sweden, France, Iceland, and Spain.

It’s impossible to say how much prices are because they change continuously. However, we can tell you that all flights land at London Gatwick airport.

Best Airlines to Fly to London

American Airlines

Major American airline United Airlines also offers wallet-friendly fares to London from several US cities, including New York (JFK), Washington DC, Boston , and San Diego. Flights land at London Heathrow, and passengers can travel Economy, Business or First Class.

You can fly to London with Finnair from Los Angeles, Chicago, Boston, New York, and Washington DC. This domestic and international airline has its HQ in Helsinki, Finland. Founded in 1923, it’s one of the oldest airlines in the world—fun fact: back then, it was then known as Aero.

Some flights offer economy, premium economy, and business seats, whereas others also provide a first-class option.

Several Things to Remember

Be flexible about your dates and departure times. You stand a much better chance of getting a better deal if you’re not rigid about this. Similarly, if you’re based in a big city with a choice of more than one airport, be flexible about which one you’re prepared to fly from. You could also mix it up and fly out of one airport and back into another; sometimes, this presents a cheaper option.

Also, flying during the middle of the week is always cheaper than on weekends. If you’re able to juggle your Monday to Friday work schedule around your flights, you’ll undoubtedly save money.

The same goes for flying off-season. Instead of heading to London when everyone else does (late Spring and Summer), consider going during the colder months. Just take a warm coat and an umbrella. The British weather is notoriously tricksy! Having said that, if you’re used to colder US winter climates, the London winter temperatures will be a breeze.

You could also consider not flying direct. Instead, you could change at one of the European hubs such as Frankfurt, Dublin, Paris, or Amsterdam. Suppose you’re not worried about getting to London at a set time or don’t mind hanging about another European airport first. In that case, this may help you to secure a cheaper ticket. You could even stop off for a few days in the city of your changeover airport for an extra dose of European culture.

Lastly, just remember that the initial price you see isn’t ever going to be the price you pay. Budget airlines have a notorious rap for adding on so-called “extras.” Most notably, checking-in luggage, take a carry-on bag on board, paying to sit together if you’re flying as a pair, etc.

Best Luxury Airlines to Fly to London

Suppose budget flying isn’t your thing, and you’ve earned the cash to treat yourself. Why not spend some of your hard-earned money on a more comfortable, even luxurious airline?

You can get to London via several routes with Etihad, including JFK, from which you can book a truly sumptuous experience, the Etihad Residence. This is the airline’s most premium package, with three separate rooms: a bedroom with a 6ft 10” bed, a shower room, and a living room. Heady stuff!

All our favorite luxury airlines also provide access to their first-class lounges at your departure airport and chauffeur-driven cars to get you to the airport. However, it was unclear if these services were still be provided at the time of writing due to COVID-19 restrictions.

Best Airlines to Fly to London

Best Airlines to Fly to London from the US

Flying to London from the US is simple. So many of the airports in the US’s major cities can get you to London, including LA, New York, Washington, Boston , San Diego, Dallas, Houston, Atlanta, Chicago, and San Francisco.

While this list isn’t an exhaustive list by any means, here’s our take on the best airlines to use from the US, bearing in mind that each airline has its own destination list. Some may not fly from all the departure points we’ve mentioned so far, so it’s always worth checking first.

Delta Airlines

With more than 160 million customers using Delta Airlines each year, it’s safe they’re a firm favorite with travelers to many destinations, including London. Delta calls London “one of the world’s hippest locations.” Yo

can hop on one of their flights from several US departure points, including New York airports like Newark, JFK, and La Guardia, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, Boston, and airports in the Washington area such as Dulles and Reagan.

There are five categories of seats to choose from: Delta One®, First, Premium Select, Delta Comfort®, and the Main Cabin.

Best Airlines to Fly to London

This 90 year+ old airline has a significant number of routes for passengers to choose from in terms of departure cities: Dallas, Los Angeles, Chicago, Seattle, Austin, Miami, Phoenix, New York JFK, Raleigh, Charlotte, and Philadelphia.

The pandemic has clearly caused havoc for the travel industry, and American Airlines are no exception. The carrier canceled dozens of flights to the UK capital from December 2020 during the holiday season.

Having said that, a quick check on their website showed that flights appeared to be largely back up and running and landing at London Heathrow. In fact, it’s the second-largest airline at Heathrow airport.

Virgin Atlantic

Virgin Atlantic has always been popular with international travelers. Its website offers up some great things you can do while you’re in London. Of course, there’s the traditional old-school sightseeing – museum visits, British Royal family palaces, and events like the changing of the guard.

Alternatively, there’s the hipper stuff like London’s markets (Brick Lane, Portobello Road, and Greenwich). Virgin Atlantic also suggests foodie and beer-related activities, so no one has to go hungry or thirsty after all that sightseeing and shopping!

US departure points include Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, and Miami.

Like Delta, there are five categories of seats to choose from: Economy Light, where your seat is allocated at check-in, Economy Classic, Economy Delight, Premium, and First Class.

Make the most of your trip to London with these expert tips © Martin-DM / Getty Images

Even though I was born and raised in London, I’ve been caught out without a brolly (umbrella) in the rain countless times. I’ve felt the scorn of others when not noticing there’s a queue, and I’ve made the costly error of driving into the city. But as a local, I’ve made these mistakes so you don’t have to; I hope my experience and top tips help inspire a smooth and memorable trip to the UK capital.

1. Skip the car

London ’s roads are small, its traffic is chaotic, and there’s hardly anywhere to park. Plus, you’ll be charged for driving your car in to the center of London – the congestion charge is £15 a day, while the separate ULEZ charge starts from £12.50 and only certain energy efficient or electric cars are exempt. The best way to get around is on public transport. Use the Tube, hop on a bus, or rent a Santander bike if in the center of the city; cycle maps, highlighting designated paths for bikes, can be downloaded online.a

2. Know your Tube etiquette

One easy way to annoy commuters is to not follow these very easy rules when traveling around on London’s Underground. Get your ticket, debit or credit card ready before you reach the ticket barriers so you don’t create a queue. Stand on the right when using escalators so passengers wanting to walk can pass. Let passengers off the train first (stand to either the right or left of the doors) before you board, and offer your seat to someone who may need it more, such as a pregnant person, an elderly person, someone who is disabled and so on.

3. Bring layers (and a raincoat)

London’s weather is changeable – temperatures have been known to rise and fall by 20°C in a matter of days. Showers can happen any time of year so pack a brolly (umbrella) or raincoat in your day bag and wear layers that you can easily take off. In summer, always carry a bottle of water on the Tube (the deep tunnels were built before air-conditioning). And while the climate may be mercurial, don’t let bad weather put you off going about your day – simply switch to more indoor-based activities, as there are hundreds of them to choose from.

A knee-down shot of a woman walking across London streets in black tennis shoes

4. Opt for comfort over fashion when it comes to shoes

Most people cover a lot of ground when exploring London, plus different terrains: grass in the many green spaces, long Tube escalators, slippery pavements and even cobblestones. Museums require leg work, as do bridges, boats and parks. Heels are pretty pointless in London, unless you are getting a door-to-door cab to a venue.

5. Make reservations for top restaurants

While there are plenty of terrific places to eat that welcome walk-ins (although be prepared to queue for the best joints), many of the best restaurants are booked up weeks in advance, especially new ones or those run by celebrity chefs. More restaurants have adopted booking policies and deposits since the pandemic, so if you’re looking for a unique dining experience, book ahead.

6. Do as the Londoners do and go to a supper club

Embed yourself in London life with a dinner party with locals; a supper club is a superb way to try home-cooked local food from London’s diverse community. These are locally run endeavors, taking place in people’s homes or taking over whole restaurants – try The Bridge Club  serving British eats made with French cooking techniques in South London or Indian street food with Chaiiwala  in East London, run out of local chef Dhruv Mittal’s flat.

A group of friends at a pub laugh while holding pints of beer

7. Know how to order at a pub

There are unspoken rules when visiting a pub. One person – not a whole group – should go to the bar. Stand anywhere and wait your turn. If someone was waiting before you, it’s polite to signal for the bar staff to serve them first if they come over to you. When you go back to your table with the drinks, you just bought a ‘round.’ Now everyone at the table owes you a drink throughout the evening, each person has a turn at buying a round. Last orders are when the bell rings, and from this moment you have 20 minutes to finish your drink.

8. Go to a football game

Football rivalries run high in the city, with 17 football clubs, including seven Premier League teams and four Women’s Super League Teams. Giant temples to the Beautiful Game sit around London and are great places to feel the collective energy of the city, as locals congregate come rain or shine to watch their heroes on the field. You'll need to book tickets far in advance for Premier League Games, but women’s and lower league men’s games are easier to come by – and arguably far more fun to watch. Visit local team websites to book.

9. Be polite and embrace the art of queueing

Londoners (and British people alike) are big on manners, and not having any will get you into trouble. Say please and thank you, and apologize if you bump into someone. Don’t stare at people on the Tube, and hold the door open for people behind you when you walk through. Let people pass, and be sure to help people in need (people with buggies at the top of stairs, older people crossing the road etc). If there is a queue to the attraction you want to visit or a stall you want to buy from, join it – you’ll soon get into a confrontation if you skip the line.

10. Make a plan, but don't go overboard

London is massive, so getting from one side to the other takes a couple of hours in a car (and that's if there is zero traffic). Riding the Tube is quicker, but journey times can still be long if attractions are on either side of the city. Minimize travel times by exploring by region – do a day in Central London, another day in North London and so on. Plan on spending at least a few hours in the big museums and galleries, as there is so much to see. Take many breaks, grab lunch at a cafe or pub and pause to take in the views. It’s easy to get carried away with the energetic pace of London, but sights are more enjoyable if you adopt a more leisurely approach.

11. Don’t leave your stuff lying around

Don’t leave your bags unattended at public venues like stations, buses, theaters or museums, as this is likely to cause alarm and your bag may be removed – or stolen. Only take around with you what you are able to carry for several hours. Luggage storage is generally rare in London, but hotels will likely store bags once you check out. Avoid carrying mobile phones in back pockets or where they can be easily swiped.

Everything you need to know about London’s 6 airports

Ben Smithson

Large cities will often have more than one airport.

There might be a main international airport and a smaller, domestic/regional-only airport. London is so big that it actually has six official airports. They are located in very different parts of the city, serve different purposes and largely offer flights to differing destinations.

Note that the COVID-19 pandemic has seen many airlines temporarily cease operations from London airports altogether. This has also led to multi-terminal airports consolidating their operations into fewer terminals. Check with the airline or airport to determine if terminal and flight arrangements differ from the descriptions below.

air travel in london

Located 14 miles west of central London, Heathrow (LHR) is the busiest airport in the U.K., and one of the world's most famous aviation hubs. This is where you are likely to land if you're arriving on a long-haul flight into London on a full-service airline. Many foreign airlines only service Heathrow in London.

In normal times, the airport sees 80 million passengers pass through its four different active terminals (2 through to 5). Terminal 1 been decommissioned.

The terminals are split as follows:

  • Terminal 2: Most Star Alliance airlines as well as Aer Lingus;
  • Terminal 3: Most Oneworld airlines (including some British Airways flights), Virgin Atlantic, Delta and Emirates;
  • Terminal 4: Most SkyTeam airlines, plus non-aligned Middle Eastern and Central Asian-based ones including Etihad and Qatar;
  • Terminal 5: Most British Airways flights, plus Iberia. American Airlines has temporarily switched from T3 to T5 and may remain there permanently.

Check Heathrow's website to see which terminal any other airline not listed here uses.

British Airways operates most of its flights from Heathrow and is by far the largest carrier at this airport. Virgin Atlantic has sizeable operations at Heathrow as well.

As a "full-service" airline airport, you can expect modern facilities with plenty of upmarket shops, duty-free and dining. Terminals 2 and 5 are quite new and very modern. There are also dozens of luxurious airport lounges operated by various airlines, as well as independent lounges welcoming paid entry and members of Priority Pass. With the number of passengers Heathrow processes each day, outbound security is usually very efficient, though you may experience very long immigration wait times at Heathrow if you cannot access the eGates.

Transport: The Heathrow Express connects you directly with Paddington in central London in 15 minutes. A cheaper, slower journey can also be taken on the Picadilly line Tube service into the city. The Tube makes three stops at Heathrow -- Terminals 2/3, Terminal 4 and Terminal 5. Make sure you get off at the correct stop, as it can be time-consuming to switch between terminals otherwise.

Buses and taxis will take around an hour to reach the city center, depending on where you are headed.

Heathrow is particularly convenient if you are living or staying west of the city because of its location. Many international travelers dislike Heathrow, especially for its complex, unglamorous terminal transfers. For me, noting the long journey west, once you are at Heathrow, it's quite an efficient and modern operation. I especially like Terminal 2.

Long regarded as London's second airport, Gatwick now sees a mix of full-service carriers like Virgin Atlantic, Emirates and China Airlines and those low-cost carriers that can absorb the slightly higher landing fees than Stansted and Luton.

It's located 24 miles south of London city center.

Pre COVID-19, both British Airways and Virgin Atlantic operated some long-haul flights from Gatwick, primarily to premium leisure destinations like Florida and the Caribbean. Gatwick is also home to Norwegian's London operations, with short- and long-haul flights usually offered. Leisure operators like TUI operate from Gatwick to "summer sun" destinations in southern Europe.

With slots at Heathrow so scarce, some airlines used Gatwick to operate extra flights to London where they cannot manage extra services into Heathrow. The likes of Qatar Airways and Cathay Pacific have operated this dual Heathrow plus Gatwick operation.

There are plenty of flights to short-haul leisure destinations from Gatwick -- EasyJet has its largest U.K. base at the airport.

The airport has two terminals -- North and South — and there is a free shuttle service between them. British Airways, Norwegian, TUI and Vueling are among the major airlines in the South Terminal. EasyJet, Emirates, Virgin Atlantic and WestJet are major airlines in the North Terminal.

There are numerous lounges there, both airline-run and independent.

Transport: You can take the Gatwick Express to Victoria station in central London in just under 30 minutes. Note that the National Rail service takes only around five minutes longer but is cheaper if you aren't in a hurry. Depending on traffic, a bus or cab will take around 80 to 90 minutes depending on where in the city you are traveling to.

If you're staying south of the Thames, Gatwick is a good location for your airport of choice. Servicing so many leisure destinations, Gatwick can become extremely crowded in summer, as a huge amount of people pass through various bottlenecks. There are a number of facilities in both terminals, and I especially like the new British Airways lounge at Gatwick. It can also be a long walk from security to some of the farthest gates.

By far the closest airport geographically to central London, just seven miles from the center, tiny London City Airport has traditionally connected business travelers located in nearby Canary Wharf with European business hubs like Zurich (ZHR), Frankfurt (FRA) and Amsterdam (AMS). The now-discontinued BA1 all-business-class service to New York (JFK) also operated from the airport until recently.

Only full-service airlines like British Airways , Swiss , Lufthansa , KLM and others operate from the airport.

The airport has also commenced services to some leisure destinations, particularly on weekends when there is less demand for business travel. Note that the airport is closed for flights between 1 p.m. Saturday and 12:30 p.m. Sunday to give some noise relief to local residents.

With all flights located in a small single terminal, it's an airport designed to spend as little time in as possible. You can check-in as late as 15 minutes before your flight and then take the short walk to your plane. There are no lounges at London City Airport.

Transport: Being so close to central London, there is no express transport option. You can take the Docklands Light Railway to Bank in just 20 minutes where you can connect to various places across Greater London. By car or bus, you're looking at just a 30- to 40-minute journey, depending on traffic and where you're headed.

If you're anywhere near Canary Wharf or east London, then London City is ideal, but you will be limited with a small number of destinations.

If you're an AvGeek and have the option of a flight to or from London City, it's a really unique flying experience and feels really cool taking off and landing right in one of the world's most famous cities. Without low-cost airlines operating there, you can expect to pay more for a flight than you would from the likes of Stansted and Luton.

Located 42 miles north-east of the city in Stansted Mountfitchet, this low-cost airport is the largest base of European powerhouse Ryanair . Ryanair operates nonstop flights to well over 100 destinations from Stansted alone to popular cities like Barcelona (BCN), Lisbon (LIS), and Prague (PRG), through to lesser-known destinations like Kalamata (KLX), Trieste (TRS), Wroclaw (WRO) and La Rochelle (LRH).

Stansted is a true low-cost airport with very basic facilities. There's only one lounge at the airport, the Escape Lounge, reflecting the fact the airport serves very few full-service airlines, though full-service carrier Emirates flies to Dubai (DXB). All flights depart from the one terminal building, though you can expect long walks to some gates.

Jet2 has also built sizable operations at Stansted -- it operates to holiday destinations likes Spain, Portugal, Cyprus, Turkey, Greece and Italy.

Transport: There is no Tube service from Stansted, so you are forced onto the fairly expensive Stansted Express service if you are headed into Central London, which reaches Liverpool Street in around 50 minutes. You can expect a bus or cab ride to take 60 to 70 minutes, depending on traffic and where you're headed.

If you are located north of the city, Stansted can be convenient. For most travelers, they tolerate the long journey to the airport in exchange for a very affordable ticket on a low-cost airline.

I've enjoyed some astonishingly cheap flights to and from Stansted thanks to Ryanair (I'm talking $13 a flight). The airport experience isn't great though, I admit. I recommend leaving enough time to head to your gate, as some are a good 20-minute walk from security.

air travel in london

A true ultra-low-cost airport, this is probably the least pleasant airport experience as a passenger. There's no train from London to the airport, you'll have to take a frustrating shuttle bus from the local train station.

Wizz Air is now the king of Luton Airport, offering bargain-basement fares to all sorts of destinations in Eastern Europe, as well as some popular holiday destinations likes Spain, Greece, Portugal and others. If you're looking to travel to lesser-known destinations in Eastern Europe like Kosovo or North Macedonia, Luton is a good place to look for cheap flights with Wizz.

EasyJet's headquarters are located immediately next to the airport terminal, though it now has a much larger presence at the more premium Gatwick.

Luton has a couple of independent airport lounges, which can be accessed with Priority Pass.

Transport: There is no easy or quick way to get to or from Luton. You need to take a shuttle bus from the terminal to the local train station and then a 35-minute National Rail train into St Pancras. By road, it's 60 to 70 minutes, depending on traffic and destination.

The main terminal at Luton has had a recent makeover to make it a more pleasant airport, but it's still basically a big shed a very long way from London. This is only an airport to choose if you score an amazingly low price or you're already well north of the city.

air travel in london

Located almost 36 miles east of London in Essex, you may see Southend missing from some lists of London airports. However, it is technically London Southend Airport (SEN) and has seen huge growth in the past few years as a low-cost alternative. Ryanair has been flying to an impressive number of destinations in mainland Europe from Southend, with Wizz also growing its services.

Southend saw around two million passengers in 2019 -- less than half of the number at London City and a fraction of even Luton, which handled more than 16 million passengers for the same time period.

The advantage of flying into or out of Southend Airport is its size. It's small, which means fewer passengers, queues and wait times than you can expect at a larger airport like Heathrow. The train station is a very short and easy walk from the terminal, and you're likely to be checked in, through security and at your boarding gate with few steps.

With its random mix of destinations, it could make sense to choose Southend if you can get a great deal on a flight. Do note that any destination served from Southend is likely to already be served from Stansted and/or Gatwick, so choose carefully based on where you're located.

The single terminal has one shared airport lounge, which can be accessed with Priority Pass.

Transport: There is no express train from Southend into central London, so you'll need to spend almost an hour on a National Rail service to Liverpool Street. By car or bus, you're looking at a journey of at least 70 minutes, depending on traffic and your destination in London.

While it takes a long time to travel to or from Southend, once you're there, the experience is great as a passenger. It's small, easy to navigate and efficient.

Bottom line

There's no perfect airport in London.

If you're flying long-haul into London, you're likely to land at Heathrow (or maybe Gatwick). If you're looking for a cheap flight to mainland Europe, you will be met with a dizzying array of options -- many destinations will have flights from four or more London airports.

air travel in london

Heathrow, Gatwick and City are considered more premium passenger experiences, while Stansted, Luton, and Southend are very much budget terminals. Where you are going in central London (or coming from) should influence your choice of airport. If you're located closer to one, it can make sense to choose an airport that might not be so premium and an airline you might not normally fly.

You could easily spend longer traveling to or from an airport than the length of the flight itself, so regardless of the airline or terminal, it makes a lot of sense to choose the airport the closest and easiest to get to. You might also spend more money traveling to or from the airport than the cost of your flight!

Quick stats about vacation rentals in London

Your guide to london, all about london.

One of the world’s most visited cities, London is a rich tapestry of history, culture, and innovation that come together seamlessly over 600 square miles on the River Thames. Even if you’ve never been to the English capital, chances are you’re familiar with its sights like Big Ben, London Bridge, and Buckingham Palace. You could spend months exploring its world-class museums, sprawling Victorian gardens, and A-list theaters and still not scratch the surface.

London’s creative drive extends beyond the exhibition halls and onto the plate. The city is an epicenter of gastronomy, boasting some of the most diverse cuisine in the world. Indian curry houses line Brick Lane, Jamaican jerk chicken shops populate New Cross, and the aroma of grilled Turkish kebabs welcomes you to Stoke Newington. In between meals, you’ll find high-fashion boutiques, niche markets, and some of the oldest bookstores in Europe. Just make sure you save time to spend a Sunday afternoon with a classic roast dinner and your beverage of choice at a corner pub — you’ll fall in love with London in an entirely different way.

The best time to stay in a vacation rental in London

London’s weather is fairly mild year-round, but that does not mean it is always warm and sunny. Rain is part of the charm in the capital, so it’s smart to pack an umbrella and a trench coat. Flowering trees and blooming gardens make spring a lovely time to visit, while a visit in December promises Christmas markets and holiday magic that emanates across the city. The weather is likely to be the best in summer, while chilly winter days make for a perfect excuse to park yourself in front of the fireplace and warm your stomach with some snacks at a pub. Regardless of when you go, keep in mind that there is no off-season in London and no shortage of apartments to rent.

Top things to do in London

Shopping in shoreditch.

Every Sunday, London’s trendiest neighborhood is home to Brick Lane market. Wander past buskers playing live music and striking street art, and you’ll find stalls selling vintage clothing, antiques, and wares by local designers. Duck into basement thrift shops and past warehouse doors that house artist ateliers, and follow your nose to Upmarket, a sprawling street food hall, for a smorgasbord of international snack options.

Barbican Centre

Amble past the Southbank booksellers and turn your eye to the Brutalist beauty that is the Barbican. Part apartment block, part multidisciplinary art complex, it’s a one-stop shop for revolving contemporary art exhibitions, to take in a London Symphony Orchestra concert, see the season’s top-billed independent theatre, or watch an arthouse film. And in December it hosts one of the city’s most charming outdoor Christmas markets.

If you’re looking for views, you won’t get better ones than from the tip top of the Shard, a 72-story skyscraper that towers above London Bridge. It houses several restaurants and bars, each one serving up delectable views over the city skyline. Whether you’re after modern British fare, craft cocktails, or afternoon tea, you’ll feel on top of the world looking out the floor-to-ceiling glass windows with the whole city sprawled beneath. Naturally, the most impressive views are to be found at sunset and into the night.

Check-In: Most airlines operating at London Gatwick offer online check-in services before your flight. It is recommended to check in online and print your boarding pass to save time at the airport. However, if you need to check bags or prefer to check in at the airport, follow the signs to your airline’s check-in desks, located in the departure areas of the North or South Terminals.

Baggage Drop-Off: If you have checked in online and have already printed your boarding pass, proceed directly to the baggage drop-off counters to deposit your checked luggage. Ensure that your bags comply with the airline’s specified weight and size limits to avoid any additional fees or delays.

Security Screening: After checking in or dropping off your luggage, you will go through security screening. Be prepared to remove your outerwear, empty your pockets, and place all personal items and electronics in the provided trays for X-ray screening. Liquids, gels, and aerosols must be in containers of 100ml or less and placed in a clear, resealable plastic bag. Familiarize yourself with the liquids restrictions to minimize any inconvenience during the security screening process.

Passport Control: Once you have cleared security screening, proceed to passport control. Have your passport and any necessary travel documents ready for inspection. Non-UK, EU, and EEA passport holders will need to present their passport and may require a visa to enter the United Kingdom. Passport control at London Gatwick is typically efficient, but there may be queues during peak travel periods.

Departure Lounge: After clearing passport control, you will enter the departure lounge. Here, you will find a range of amenities, including shops, restaurants, and seating areas, allowing you to relax and prepare for your flight. Take note of your boarding gate information, as it will be displayed on the flight information screens. Stay close to your gate and listen for any announcements or updates regarding your flight.

Be sure to arrive at the airport with sufficient time before your flight to allow for check-in and security procedures. The recommended time varies depending on your destination and airline, so check with your airline for specific guidelines. Preparing for Your Flight

Preparing for your flight is essential to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable journey. Here are some tips to help you get ready before boarding your plane at London Gatwick:

Check Your Travel Documents: Before heading to the airport, double-check that you have all the necessary travel documents. This includes your passport, visa (if required), boarding pass, and any other identification or documentation specific to your destination. Ensure that your passport is valid for the duration of your trip.

Pack Wisely: Pack your carry-on and checked bags with the essentials you’ll need during your journey. Consider the baggage restrictions and weight limits imposed by your airline and pack accordingly. It’s a good idea to carry a change of clothes, travel-sized toiletries, and any necessary medications in your carry-on bag in case of unexpected delays or lost luggage.

Plan Your Airport Arrival Time: Give yourself enough time to arrive at the airport, especially during busy periods. Consider factors such as traffic, transportation options, and the recommended check-in time provided by your airline. Arriving with ample time reduces stress and allows you to navigate through the airport at a relaxed pace.

Comfortable Attire: Dress in comfortable clothing and footwear for your flight, especially if it’s a long journey. Layer your clothing, as temperatures can vary throughout the airport and onboard the aircraft. Avoid wearing heavy jewelry or belts that may trigger additional security checks at the airport.

Electronics and Entertainment: Bring along your personal electronic devices, such as smartphones, tablets, or e-readers, to keep yourself entertained during the flight. Make sure your devices are fully charged and consider bringing a portable charger for long-haul flights. Don’t forget to pack headphones to enjoy music, movies, or podcasts during your journey.

Stay Hydrated: Airplane cabins can be dry, so it’s important to stay hydrated during your flight. Bring an empty refillable water bottle through security and fill it up at one of the water stations in the departure lounge. You may also want to bring a small moisturizer or lip balm to keep your skin hydrated.

Stay Informed: Check the status of your flight before leaving for the airport. Airlines often provide real-time updates through their websites or mobile apps. In case of any delays or schedule changes, you’ll be aware and can plan accordingly.

Security Regulations: Familiarize yourself with the security regulations and restrictions in place at London Gatwick. This includes the liquids and gels policy, prohibited items, and any additional security measures specific to your destination. This knowledge will help you pack your bags appropriately and streamline the security process.

By preparing in advance and being aware of what to expect, you can enjoy a comfortable and stress-free experience before your flight from London Gatwick. Take the time to ensure you have everything in order, allowing you to relax and look forward to your journey.

Have your passport and any necessary travel documents readily available for inspection. Non-UK, EU, and EEA passport holders may need to complete departure forms or provide additional documents as required by their destination country.

I have a US passport and I'll be flying with Virgin Atlantic. I'll have a nine-hour layover at LHR after flying in from Delhi, India. I'm actually thinking about exploring outside the airport during this time. So, I have a couple of questions about storing my carry-on luggage at LHR.

1. Do you happen to know if Virgin Atlantic allows gate check-in of carry-on bags in India?

2. If any of you have used the lockers at LHR before, could you let me know how much extra time I should factor in for using them? I'd also appreciate any other suggestions you might have regarding luggage storage at LHR.

Thanks in advance for your help!

There are no baggage lockers at Heathrow airport, but there are left luggage storage facilities in all terminal buildings: https://www.excess-baggage.com/our-locations.php

Nine hours between arrival and departure will probably mean half that time to explore. If you want to go to central London then the travel date is key as planned works could have an impact on the trip. Let us know more please.

1- I don't know but would be surprised if they offer that

2- There are no lockers at Heathrow. If you want to leave your bags, you need to make use of the left luggage facility at the airport, or one of the train stations in London. Or use the Stasher service:

https://www.heathrow.com/at-the-airport/airport-services/left-luggage

https://www.luggagestoragelondon.co.uk/victoria-station

https://stasher.com/

You might look at going to Windsor instead of into London. It’s closer to the airport and would probably be a little easier all the way around.

I’ve only used the left luggage at T5, but it’s the same company in all terminals so expect it to be the same. It’s a fairly quick process on both drop off and pick up, in my experience. It costs GBP 15 per item, assuming it will be stored for between 3-24 hours.

No reason why you couldn’t go into London if the transport systems are operating as normal, you don’t need to be back at the airport 3 hours before the onward flight , 90-120 mins would be fine IMO, even allowing for picking up any stored bags. Unless you have lounge access, LHR T3 airside departures isn’t a place you’d seek to spend a lot of time…

Thank you all. Appreciate the information.

view of planes on their stands and taxiing out to the runway in a queue at Heathrow, with one plane coming in to land and the London skyline seen in the background

London is most exposed city in world to air pollution from aviation, study finds

Six airports put UK capital ahead of Tokyo and Dubai, with Heathrow second-worst global airport for climate impact

The planes taking off and landing at London’s six airports expose the city’s inhabitants to the equivalent of 3.23m cars’ worth of harmful nitrogen oxides and particulate matter emissions every year. In Tokyo and Dubai, residents are exposed to 2.78m cars’ worth of emissions from air traffic.

These three cities are the world’s worst affected by air pollution from aviation, according to new research tracking the air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions of cargo and passenger flights from airports around the world.

It found the largest 20 airports, taken together, produced as much carbon emissions as 58 coal-fired power stations.

“Pollution around airports is growing year on year,” said Jo Dardenne, the aviation director at Transport & Environment , the thinktank which helped produce the research. “It affects millions of people, who breathe in toxic emissions and develop health conditions as a result, yet policymakers are brushing the problem under the carpet.

“Exponential growth of the sector and airports is incompatible with their climate goals, especially considering the slow uptake of clean technologies. The sector led us to believe that they would bounce back better after the pandemic. They’ve certainly bounced back – but without action, the sector’s climate and health impact isn’t going to get any better.”

The 2024 Airport Tracker, produced by the global affairs thinktank ODI in partnership with T&E, updates research first published in 2021. For the first time it includes the carbon impacts of air freight as well as passenger flights, covering the emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx) and fine particulate matter (PM2.5) from 1,300 airports.

An Emirates jetliner comes in to land at Dubai International airport; the control tower, a terminal building and parked planes are seen in the foreground and the city is seen in the far distance

The world’s most polluting airport overall, it found, was Dubai , in the United Arab Emirates. It accounted for 20.1m tonnes of CO 2 emissions in a single year, roughly equivalent to the greenhouse gas emissions of five coal power plants, as well as 7,531 tonnes of NOx and 71 tonnes of PM2.5.

Heathrow airport in London was the second-worst for climate impact, spewing out 19.1m tonnes of CO 2 a year, and for its NOx emissions, at 5,844 tonnes, although its 37 tonnes of annual PM2.5 pollution put it down that list in 16th place.

From there the picture is more complicated, with airports’ climate impacts and emissions of other harmful pollutants not clearly linked.

Critics of air travel have said there were insufficient safeguards around the kinds of pollution caused by airports. “Aircraft noise levels are continuously exceeded, and we completely lack EU standards on ultrafine particles, which are a major health hazard,” said Magdalena Heuwieser, of the activist network Stay Grounded.

after newsletter promotion

“Some key measures must be taken immediately to protect the health of workers and communities surrounding airports – like night flight bans, or simple jet fuel improvements to have at least the same standards as car fuel. But technology won’t solve the whole problem: a reduction of the number of flights is most effective and needed.”

Sam Pickard, a research associate at ODI, said: “Airports are long-term infrastructure, so choices now affect climate and air quality far into the future. More has to be done to recognise these impacts and limit expansion in many parts of the world.”

The Guardian has contacted the International Air Transport Association for comment.

City Pair Program (CPP)

The OMB-designated Best-in-Class City Pair Program procures and manages discounted air passenger transportation services for federal government travelers. At its inception in 1980 this service covered only 11 markets, and now covers over 13,000 markets. Today, CPP offers four different contract fares.

Fare finder

  • Search for contract fares

Note: All fares are listed one-way and are valid in either direction. Disclaimer - taxes and fees may apply to the final price

Taxes and fees may apply to the final price

Your agency’s authorized travel management system will show the final price, excluding baggage fees. Commercial baggage fees can be found on the Airline information page.

Domestic fares include all existing Federal, State, and local taxes, as well as airport maintenance fees and other administrative fees. Domestic fares do not include fees such as passenger facility charges, segment fees, and passenger security service fees.

International

International fares do not include taxes and fees, but include fuel surcharge fees.

Note for international fares: City codes, such as Washington (WAS), are used for international routes.

Federal travelers should use their authorized travel management system when booking airfare.

  • E-Gov Travel Service for civilian agencies.
  • Defense Travel System for the Department of Defense.

If these services are not fully implemented, travelers should use these links:

  • Travel Management Center for civilian agencies.

Previous fiscal year contract awards can be found on the Fiscal documents and information page . To read more about the contract award highlights, please see our Award highlights .

Instructions for the FY24 CSV file

All fares are listed one-way and are valid in either direction. In the CSV file, Origin and Destination are in alphabetical order regardless of travel direction. The Origin is the airport code (domestic travel) or city code (international travel) that comes first alphabetically and the Destination is the airport or city code that comes second alphabetically.

For example, you are traveling from Washington, DC to London, England. You know the city codes are WAS and LON respectively. The city code LON comes first alphabetically and WAS comes second alphabetically. To find the contract fares, you filter:

15 alternative things to do in London that aren’t the same old tourist traps

Tourists boating along the Regents Canal around Little Venice in London

London certainly isn’t short of attractions — but the obvious choices can be overcrowded and, let’s be honest, a little overpriced.

Those looking for hidden gems off the tourist trail, simply need to know where to look.

That’s because the capital is brimming with alternative activities – some of which won’t even cost you a penny.

So let’s get into it. Forget The Shard, Buckingham Palace and Skygarden, below are 15 alternative things to do in London…

Go stargazing at the Royal Observatory

The historic Royal Observatory Green in London

The Royal Observatory in Greenwich is (funnily enough) the Home of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT). It also houses the UK’s largest telescopes as well as the Peter Harrison Planetarium, where you can get up close and personal with the stars.

What’s more, you can stand on the Prime Meridian line – which divides the eastern and western hemispheres of the Earth. So there’s plenty to get stuck into.

Have a drink on Royal Festival Hall’s balcony

Royal Festival Hall

London can feel a little saturated with rooftop bars and it can be hard to know which one to pick. However, a lesser-known and more peaceful find in the capital’s offering comes in the form of Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall.

Grab a drink from one of the venue’s bars and head to the balcony for stunning views over the Thames. It’s also the perfect spot for people-watching on the Southbank.

Take a Backstage Tour of the National Theatre

Latest london news.

  • Train derails causing travel chaos on major route into London
  • London police station goes up in flames with 30 fire engines sent to scene
  • This 1960s housing estate is the utopian living we all deserve

To get the latest news from the capital visit Metro.co.uk's London news hub .

One of the riverside entrances to the National Theatre on the south bank of the River Thames, London

Get backstage access to one of the capital’s most renowned theatres with this experience.

Let expert guides take you on a 75-minute tour of the venue, covering on-site carpentry, props and scenic painting workshops, and learn what goes into the world-class productions.

These tours take place at 5pm on Monday to Friday and midday on Saturdays.

Book Electric Shuffleboard

Get your game on with this fantastic electric shuffleboard experience.

Metro’s very own lifestyle reporter Courtney Pochin says: ‘If you’ve got a couple of hours to kill with several friends or relatives in London, Electric Shuffle is a great way to spend the time – especially if you’re the competitive sort.

‘The venues look pretty funky inside, they serve tasty cocktails and nibbles and the games are really fun. You might get lucky and discover a hidden talent for it, but at the very least you’ll definitely have a laugh.’

Ride the IFS Cloud Cable Car

The Emirates Air Line or Thames Cable Car

London’s only cable car offers 360 views of the Thames, the Greenwich Peninsula, the Royal Docks, The O2, and the capital’s skyline in general.

What’s more, you can enjoy it for less than a tenner – with single tickets coming in at £6 for adults and £3 for kids.

If you really want to make the most of it, why not catch a cable car at sunset to capture the capital in all its golden hour glory.

Get a GoBoat down Regent’s Canal

Sure, taking the sights of the capital in by the touristy open-top bus is great, but have you ever considered lapping up the city by boat?

For those wanting to try, GoBoat lets you roam the city’s waterways with your own electric powered boat. The vessels have space for eight and are available to hire from one to three hours – plus you can pick from a variety of locations. You can even take your own picnic and drinks aboard.

One of the more scenic spots is Paddington, where you can sail down Regent’s Canal and enjoy views of Little Venice, London Zoo and more.

Take a look around Highgate Cemetery

Graves in the East cemetery of Highgate Cemetery

Highgate Cemetery is the final resting spot for a plethora of famous names – from George Michael to Karl Marx.

Split into two sides, the cemetery in North London is also home to a whole host of fascinating characters throughout the centuries.

You’ll also find eccentric showman George Wombwell’s grave, which has a stone lion resting on it, while Thomas Sayers – a bare-knuckle prize fighter – has a stone sculpture of his pet dog resting on the front.

Either opt for a guided tour or wander around at your own leisure.

Visit Walthamstow Wetlands

Walthamstow Wetlands nature reserve

This 211-hectare nature reserve is the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of city life.

‘Walthamstow Wetlands is a gorgeous little nook that stretches all the way over to Tottenham,’ explains Metro’s lifestyle reporter Eleanor Noyce .

‘I used to live very close-by and when I started training up for my first half marathon, I’d run a lovely big loop around the whole area. It’s big enough that it doesn’t feel too busy, especially at the weekends, and it’s also the perfect spot to do some bird watching too if you’re into that.’

Take a trip to God’s Own Junkyard

London Neon Wonderland

Also in Walthamstow is this neon paradise – a venue that celebrates the life and work of the late artist Chris Bracey.

Eleanor adds: ‘If you want an edgy snap for your Instagram page, this is sure to provide one. God’s Own Junkyard is set amongst an array of craft ale shops in an unsuspecting old industrial estate.

‘There’s more to do here than just gaze at vintage neon signs though, as there’s a cafe where you can sit and read or catch up with a friend over coffee.

‘Nearby, there’s also Walthamstow Village which is home to loads of fantastic pubs, including The Nags Head and The Castle (which does a delicious roast dinner).

Tour around Ham House

Ham House in Richmond, London, UK

For history lovers who want a break from the capital’s crowded museums, a trip to National Trust’s Ham House, in Richmond, could be just the ticket.

The 17th-century house and formal gardens are set on the bank on the River Thames in Ham.

A quick tour of inside the magnificent Stuart house will give you a glimpse of times gone by, with a unique collection of cabinets, artwork and furniture. Outside, a walk through the Cherry Garden and Kitchen Garden is a lovely way to while away the hours.

Enjoy a picnic on Primrose Hill

London skyline

Channel Emma and Dex and take a bottle of wine and a packet of Kettle chips to Primrose Hill for a picnic with a view.

Located north of Regent’s Park, the scenic spot featured in Netflix’s One Day and offers incredible views of the skyline, from 63 metres above sea level.

Courtney says: ‘If you can’t be bothered to make a lunch, you could always head to nearby It’s Bagels. The NYC-inspired bagel place went viral on social media after opening, selling out its bagels in mere hours. Hopefully by now the rush has died down and you’ll be able to grab a tasty treat to enjoy with the sights.’

Visit one of London’s lidos

Aerial view of London Fields Lido.

From Parliament Hill nestled on Hampstead Heath to the colourful changing rooms at Tooting Bec, London’s lidos cater for everyone.

Swimming al fresco is a lovely way to spend a few hours in London and most are found in vibrant areas, with plenty to explore afterwards.

If you fancy some open-air splish-splashing then Brockwell Lido, Charlton Lido, Finchley Lido, Hillingdon Lido and Hampton pool are just a few to choose from.

Take on white water rapids

Thrillseekers can head to Lee Valley White Water Rafting experience for the ultimate day of adrenaline.

The London 2012 legacy venue will host you for the day and kit you out in a wetsuit, boots, helmet and a buoyancy aid before letting you loose on the rapids.

Whether you decide to tackle it solo, with a friend, or in a group, it’s guaranteed to be a day to remember.

Wander around Little Venice

Little Venice on Regents Canal

Little Venice, with its beautiful waterways and canals, is located just to the north of Paddington. For those who love to stroll around a city, a 2.5 mile canal walk will take you from the quaint Little Venice to the vibrant Camden.

The area is also home to some independent theatre venues, such as the Canal Café Theatre and the Puppet Theatre Barge – hosted on a canal boat.

Soak up graffiti on Leake Street

Leake Street Arches Graffiti

The eight former railway arches that lie beneath Waterloo station are home to the longest legal graffiti wall in the capital.

Stretching for 300 metres, take a stroll through this creative canvas, which is always ever-changing, so no two visits are ever the same.

Video taken by a planespotter in Canada shows the moment a Boeing 777 was hit by lightning just after takeoff

  • A Boeing 777 was struck by lightning while taking off from Vancouver International Airport.
  • A planespotter caught the incredible sight on video.
  • The Air Canada jet continued to London Heathrow Airport and landed safely before being inspected.

Most airliners are struck by lightning at least once a year, according to the National Weather Service. It's less common that such an incident is caught on video.

Ethan West told CBC News he was planespotting at Vancouver International Airport on Sunday when he saw one of his favorite aircraft: a Boeing 777-300ER.

Shortly after he started filming the Air Canada jet taking off, it was struck by lightning.

A spokesperson for Air Canada confirmed to CBC News that a plane departing Vancouver was hit by lightning on Sunday.

It continued its 10-hour journey to London Heathrow Airport and landed safely before being inspected, they added.

Planes that are suspected to be hit by lightning have to undergo a mandatory inspection which can end up delaying flights.

The National Weather Service says jets avoid thunderstorms as much as possible because they actually often cause the strike: "Their presence enhances the ambient electric fields typical for thunderstorms and facilitates electrical breakdown through air."

Commercial jets are designed with several protections to mitigate the impact of a lightning strike, such as an additional layer of protection that conducts the electricity away from passengers and internal electronics.

Sometimes it can still damage the fuselage, as in the case of an American Airlines Boeing 787 Dreamliner last year, per View From the Wing .
