  • You can get more facilities at a cheap rate than FIT Package tours.
  • You will have to share your tour carrier with other people in the group.
  • The rate depends on the size of the group.
  • It is more suitable for families, and students who want to have fun with other members of the group.

7)    What tips do you have for travelers to help them stay in shape while on the road?

  • Eat right. This is definitely number one on my list. Just because you are traveling doesn’t mean that you have to eat food that will leave you feeling bloated and tired. Proper diet is one of the most important things you can do to make sure you are staying healthy while you are on the road.
  • Don’t postpone your workout. There are so many benefits to a morning workout. It will boost your metabolism, mood and energy level, keep you alert and focused throughout the day. You are also far more likely to stay consistent with your training if you get it done early in the day rather than wait for later when you feel less motivated and fatigue.
  • Never miss a Monday workout. There is something about working out on Monday that makes you feel like you are off to the right start of the week.  You’ll definitely be more likely to stay consistent with your workouts for the rest of the week. In addition, high-intensity exercises will help to reduce anxiety prior to the work day, encourage self-control and more discipline for other areas of your life and improve your sleep cycle.
  • Drink plenty of water. The body needs water for virtually all of its functions. Flying dehydrates you because of the lack of humidity in the cabin air, so I recommend to drink plenty of water before, during and after your flight. This will help you to avoid headaches, fatigue, travel lag and dry skin. I would also recommend drinking a glass of water every hour while you are on the plane. It’s also a good practice to skip any alcohol beverages and coffee during the flights. But if you are a coffee drinker like myself, then limit your consumption to one cup and drink plenty of water with it.
  • Make exercising part of who you are. Walk more, take the stairs, explore the city on foot. Those are small but important things that each one of us can implement into our busy schedules daily.
  • Plan a workout . Sometimes our schedules can get pretty hectic. So I find that the best practice to stick to your workout regimen is by planning your workouts ahead of time. I usually plan mine on Sunday for the week ahead. Pencil your workouts in and I promise you will be less likely to skip them.
  • Pack your workout outfit and a mat. That’s all you really need to get a nice intense full-body workout. If you maintain a proper diet and workout regularly, you will stay in shape no matter where you are or how busy your life gets.

Fitness Travel: 10 Ways to Travel and Stay Fit

Fitness travel – a verb; meaning to stay fit while traveling on a vacation or a trip. No this doesn’t mean you have to take a vacation designed around fitness, it means to take an active trip where you are doing more than laying around the pool and sipping pina coladas, even though that is perfectly acceptable to do for a few days.

Traveling in my opinion is the ultimate high. I am always searching for the next big adventure and unknown place to explore in the world. But just because you are traveling, that doesn’t mean your fitness routine has to go out the window.

Or that you’ll have to go on a diet from your vacation.

Travel and fitness are top priorities in my life. Being fit, makes me feel better mentally, physically and emotionally. That is why I put together a list of how to stay in shape while traveling.

One needs to have a little bit of fitness to travel the world. The best part about staying fit while traveling is that it’s easy to incorporate on a vacation and most of the time you won’t even know you’re doing it. Now that’s a win-win in my book.

Walk Everywhere to Stay Fit While Traveling

This is one of the easiest ways to stay fit while traveling, w alk everywhere. Not only does it burn more calories but it helps you get familiar with a new area. Free walking tours is one of my favorite ways to explore a new city.

I once walked 16 miles in one day in Las Vegas just by exploring the strip. This made indulging in margaritas and meals that much more enjoyable. This is also a great way to save money while you travel .

Did you know that average beer has 150 calories, a margarita is anywhere from 200-300 calories and a glass of wine has 123 calories? It’s no secret that drinking heavily adds hundreds or even thousands of extra calories a day to your diet.

Excessive drinking not only drives up your budget but it also packs on the pounds. This brings us to our second fitness travel trip, party with a purpose.

Save the partying for special occasions at events like St. Patrick’s day in Ireland or at a legendary full moon party in Koh Pha Ngan in Thailand. These are 2 major drinking events and it’s fun to be able to let loose every once in a while.

Pair this fitness travel tip with the previous one and you’ll be able to balance out the splurge and get back on track.

Hiking is by far my favorite way to stay fit while traveling. Some of my favorite travel memories are from conquering an epic hike in a foreign destination.  

Hiking while you travel not only burns some serious calories but it gets you outside which boosts your Vitamin D and you’re almost guaranteed killer views.

Colca Canyon – Offers trekkers a chance to spot soaring condors, stay in an oasis on the canyon floor, witness some of Peru’s most beautiful landscapes, bathe in thermal hot springs and hike through desert scenery.

Valbona to Theth Trek – An adventure through the Albanian Alps hiking connecting Valbona and Theth National Park.

Haleakala Volcano – Hiking into the world’s largest dormant volcano on Maui, staying the night in a cabin and hiking out another route.

An exciting fitness trend that has been emerging are airport gyms. This means that sprinting to your gate doesn’t have to be your only form of cardio.

Many airports around the country are popping up with airport gyms which are usually located within security and some even offer options to rent exercise clothes and tennis shoes.

Make sure you check out an airport gym next time you are flying through Singapore, San Fransisco, Dubai, Chicago or Toronto. Plus exercising before a flight helps increase your mood and aids in having a more comfortable long haul flight.

A great way to explore city is by bike. Renting a bicycle and biking around takes you further than if you were just walking.

When I traveled through China , I rented a bike in Xi’an and in Beijing to explore these massive cities. This was a perfect way to explore as many of the highlights I wanted to check out were spread out across town.

It doesn’t just have to be a city that you explore by bicycle. If you ever find yourself in France in wine country, cycling around to different vineyards in between wine tasting is the way to go. Travel and fitness doesn’t get more perfect than this.

Choose Active Activities to Stay in Shape While Traveling

Who says you can’t plan your vacation around fitness. For example you can take a ski trip, spending all day skiing in the mountains is one heck of a workout. Or taking a trip to Hawaii to perfect your surfing is a full body workout while getting a tan.

Even if your vacation isn’t designed specifically around a certain sport you can still choose active activities to fill your days. For instance, instead of going on a whale watch you can opt for kayaking with the whales, a once in a lifetime adventure on Maui .  Or go rock climbing, one of the coolest things to do in Vang Vieng, Laos .

If you’re not much of an adrenalin junky, schedule an early tee time to hit the links. There are plenty of activities that exert effort and are lots of fun in the process.

If you enjoy running, a great way to get to know a city is by waking early and going for a run. Not only does it blast major calories but it gets you familiar with your surroundings and the lay of the land. Early morning runs are great because it’s cooler in temperature and less people are out and about.

I have a friend who runs destination marathons all over the world! From the original marathon in Greece to Uganda, Africa she travels all over the world to run marathons which is pretty awesome.

Whether you are a beginner or seasoned athlete, a HIIT class at the block will get your heart pumping and leave you feeling like the queen that you are, strong, confident and powerful.

Some other trendy workouts you should try are aerial yoga, Muay Thai training classes, pole dancing or a dance class like salsa dancing.

The United States is a highly sought-after tourist destination for people all around the globe. For those of us in New York State, we are fortunate to have some of the most highly sought-after tourist destinations on the planet! New York City and Niagara Falls serve as natural gateways for international travelers around the world. We all know that tourism is big business- international travel plays a big part and is increasing every year. Types of International Travelers

There are two main types of international travelers, those who come in groups and those who come independently. The type of international traveler I’m referring to is the individual or families, also known as FIT – Foreign Independent Traveler. FITs are individuals, families, couples, or any group made up of about 10 people or less. They tend to stay longer and spend more than the typical domestic traveler. They will fly in and rent a car but since they’re from overseas, they often don’t know what else there is to do in our state between the two gems at each end. So, they will often go to a travel agent and buy a readymade itinerary. These itineraries are imperative in implementing an international tourism marketing strategy.

In creating international itineraries, destinations need to be cognizant of who they are trying to attract.

9 points to keep in mind when creating itineraries for FIT Travel

  • Give it an interesting and enticing title . Be creative in the title of the itinerary! It will be the first thing that will attract the prospective visitor.
  • Make sure it makes logistical sense. People will be driving, so put attractions and hotels in the correct geographic order.
  • Don’t try to time out the itinerary. Remember, these folks are on their own. They don’t want to stick to a specific schedule. The itinerary should focus on suggested attractions and activities and not a specific amount of time to spend at each place.
  • Visuals are a must! Social media plays a key role in travel & tourism and drives people to visit a destination. There must be beautiful pictures! Just descriptions won’t be enough.  We live in a highly visual world, especially in travel. A picture speaks a thousand words.
  • Descriptions are important and can make or break an itinerary. Of course, there should be descriptions of the activities and sights to see but make it brief. Also, the descriptions should be more experiential in nature. The modern tourist is much more interested in the experience than they are the background or history.
  • Know your audience. Keep in mind who you’re talking to and where they’re from. In relation to most other countries around the world, the United States is very young.  For example, while we may think it’s a big deal that a building is 200 years old – compared to 1,000-year-old castles in Germany or artifacts in China, a couple of centuries isn’t that impressive. Although a few historical facts can be mentioned, the focus in a short description should be on experience, beauty or culinary delights.
  • Less is more. There isn’t much real estate on an itinerary. The key sellers are pictures and descriptions. Don’t take up space on addresses and phone numbers, but always include a website.
  • Show the way! Maps are a must. It doesn’t have to be a detailed map, but a map of the state which includes location identifiers (dot or star), is a great asset.
  • How does it look? Remember that this is an international piece.  Invest in a professional design to ensure high quality printed pieces, as well as something sharable electronically.  It may be featured on a travel agent’s website or shown in hard copy to be used in various marketing activities.

The bottom line is, our friends overseas are at our back door.  We just need to make sure they know to stop in and say hello.

FITs: A Booming Market and an Opportunity for Agents

This is the first of two interviews with Avanti Destination’s Harry Daalgard on FITs Fully independent travel. Foreign independent tour. Whichever definition you ascribe to the acronym FIT, one thing is certain. FITs are an increasingly popular form of travel as more clients forego off-the-shelf packaged tours in favor of bespoke itineraries. Selling FITs is an opportunity for travel agents to showcase their expertise—and prove their value to clients, according to Harry Dalgaard, founder and president of Avanti Destinations. The company specializes in independent travel to Europe and Central and South America. Travel Market Report spoke with Dalgaard about trends in FIT and FIT travel to Europe. Many tour operators tell us that FIT business is booming. Do you agree? Dalgaard: I’ve been in the market for 34 years. The growth we’ve seen in our area of specialization is extraordinary. At Avanti, our business to Europe has more than doubled in the last four years. At the moment there’s a perception that you’re getting a lot of bang for the buck there. We’re seeing the lowest exchange rates in many years. Many people are jumping at the opportunity to go there because the Euro may not stay that low for long. Other than a weak Euro at the moment, what trends do you think are driving the growth of FITs? Dalgaard: I think the market is maturing and expanding. There’s been a tremendous amount of growth from the Midwest. Traditionally, that’s been more of an escorted or group market. But now the folks who’ve already experienced group travel want to go back. This time, they want to sample those destinations on their own. How do the demographics break down for FITs as opposed to packaged tours? Dalgaard: Since we’re a straight B2B, we don’t typically have a lot of client data. But we do have age statistics. They tell us that half of our clientele is under 50. We’re also seeing a growing acceptance of travel professionals by millennials. They’re like boomers in that they like their independence. They also like to use agents. They’re web savvy and they don’t mind research. But when it’s more than simply a three-night stay in Cancun, they want an advocate on their side. Agents are advocates. They can reach millennials with authentic, unique itineraries.   What’s the strongest argument for FIT travel as opposed to a packaged tour? Dalgaard: Customized travel is a lot more personal. And it’s so rewarding to have encounters that aren’t pre-planned. Sometimes the greatest experiences happen that way. We also encourage people to get off the beaten path. In Europe, we want to give them the flexibility to explore beyond the major capital cities. We make it possible for them to go to small villages in Germany, attend a wine fest or experience a traditional festival in Spain. For example, there’s the Las Fallas Festival  in Valencia each March where you’ll see bonfires on every corner. It’s really special if you come across something like that. It’s not mass tourism or grandstands. But it’s definitely authentic. What are the biggest advantages for travel agents in booking FITs? Daalgard: There’s value in showing your expertise to the client. You’re providing them with a customized vacation. Agents also earn a good commission on lots of things that clients can pre-book. There are so many things such as day sightseeing tours that concierge ends up booking. In Paris, for example, you know they’re going to take a day tour to Versailles, to the Normandy beaches, to the Loire chateaux. Why not get your commission on those things? What other destinations in Europe are doing well for FIT business? Dalgaard: Portugal and Andalusia, Spain are very strong for us. Iceland is probably the highest growth product in terms of percentage. The stopover opportunities with Icelandair make it very attractive. It’s also seen as an adventure destination and it’s very appealing to millennials. You have a lot of people going up to see the Aurora Borealis, or to dive under frozen lakes. Other tour operators tell us that the growing river cruise market is helping their business. Do you agree? Dalgaard: Definitely. We’re seeing a tremendous benefit. These aren’t mass market cruises. The ships carry 150 passengers. Most of them are interested in being away for about 10 to 14 days. The average cruise is one week. So the passengers are looking for some time to add on to the front or the back. We’re seeing people get off in Passau, make their way to Prague or Vienna and fly out from there. It’s not just central Europe; people are looking for stays in places like Bordeaux and Lyon. For agents, it’s a great opportunity to sell some additional pre- or post-cruise stays to their river cruise clients.   What about ocean cruises?   Dalgaard: They’re also bringing in extra FIT business. Baltic Sea cruises are leading to tremendous growth in Copenhagen and Stockholm, two big ports. Both are lovely cities, and the chance to plan some extra time there is something agents should jump at. Norway is going crazy with the whole “Frozen” phenomenon.  It’s hard to imagine that a cartoon aimed at kids is generating interest, but it is. Everyone wants to go there. It’s lovely, you can’t blame them. Next time: The FIT market in Latin and South America
