The UN designated the  International Decade for People of African Descent , from 2015 to 2024, to promote the recognition, justice, and development of African descendants worldwide. Through various programs, events, and awareness campaigns, the Decade seeks to create a platform for dialogue, understanding, and positive change in the lives of people in the diaspora. Africa Renewal will highlight the journeys African Americans are taking to reconnect with Africa – the continent their ancestors called home. The third piece in this four-part series highlights the journey of one African American woman who uncovered the true identity of Africa while researching her own:

ghana tourism authority cape coast

There is a version of Africa romanticized as a place with lush landscapes and rich resources ruled by kings and queens. African Americans dream of going there and receiving a warm welcome home.

Then there is the other version.

“I grew up in the era of ‘feed the children’ campaigns, which showed Africa with a lot of poverty and blight,”  Ms. Kennedy S. Johnson told Africa Renewal in an interview. “I wanted to go there and see it with my own eyes.”

When Ms. Johnson placed her feet on African soil, she knew it would be her first of many adventures on the continent.

A transformational trip to Kenya in East Africa had Ms. Johnson looking to her future while examining her past. “As I got older and started travelling the world, I wanted to understand myself and my identity.”

Identity was always a question for the Detroit native. Her family dynamics were constantly shifting: she had never met her father, and her mother could not care for her. After her grandmother died, she lived with a string of relatives before being orphaned.

With 50 countries already stamped in her passport, Ms. Johnson embarked on a new journey —to discover her heritage. When she received her DNA results from Ancestry.com in 2016, her itinerary — and her life — changed.

“I rerouted my journey to all the countries that had my ethnicity markers: Ghana, Nigeria, Benin, Togo, Côte d’Ivoire, Senegal and the Gambia,” said the travel enthusiast. “I wanted to see the similarities in our traits, customs and traditions.

Honorary title

On one of Ms. Johnson’s many trips, she found an early investor to launch her Green Book Travel agency, and Forbes recognized her on its 2021 Next 1000 list.

Named after the Negro Motorist Green Book that helped Black travellers find welcoming services and accommodations in America’s segregated South , her agency offers ancestry, birthright and heritage tours for the African diaspora.

Ms. Johnson’s objective for Green Book Travel was to steer away from the colonial mindset and support descendants in tracing their ancestral footprints by visiting all the places that slave ships      docked.

“The transatlantic slave trade stripped us of our names, our culture, our traditions and our religion. It cut us off from our origins,” she said. “By going back, African      Americans can restore their identities.”

Ms. Johnson traced her ancestry to Ghana. There, she received her African name, which came with a royal title — Queen Zosimli Naa — a distinction bestowed on her through the enskinment ceremony where a candidate sits on an animal skin. Naa Fusheini Bawa, chief of Tamale in the Dagbon Kingdom of Ghana, enskinned Ms. Johnson.

According to the Ghana News Agency , Chief Fusheini Bawa said that he intended the title “to strengthen the bilateral relations [between Ghana and the United States], especially in the areas of culture and tourism.”

In her role, Ms. Johnson has supported clean water initiatives, provided shoes to school children and hosted economic development workshops.

She even employed local talent and paid them fair wages through Social Fabrik, her sustainable fashion line with ethically sourced materials.

Her position, she said, includes a cultural custodianship tasked with making public appearances.

Ms. Johnson was spotted in a photograph at a royal ceremony for fellow African American travel entrepreneur Diallo Sumbry, who sat on a traditional stool to receive his new title.

“Yes, she attended my enstoolment . I invited the entire community,” said Mr. Sumbry, honoured for his work as co-architect of Ghana’s Year of Return and as author of A Smart Ghana Repatriation Guide. Mr. Sumbry was named Nkosuohene , fittingly, chief of development.

Ms. Johnson chuckles when people ask about her royal roots, which she explains as an honorary distinction reserved for a few prominent individuals throughout the diaspora. “The positions help to reintegrate African Americans into the African family.”

African ambassador

Through her business ventures, Ms. Johnson has had opportunities to help others take their own journeys back to Africa through cultural tours.

She sees herself as a conduit for her American brothers and sisters to come to the continent as tourists, investors or returnees.

The tours offer descendants a historical connection, Ms. Johnson said. “I get emotional visiting traditional kingdoms and meeting with the elders, experiencing those places where my ancestors took their last bath, tracing their footsteps through the Door of No Return .”

The Door of No Return refers to the exit at the dungeons in Cape Coast, Ghana, where millions of Africans were detained before being forced onto ships and sold into slavery. According to the Ghana Tourism Authority, the Cape Coast Castle is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a museum honouring the ancestors.

Experiencing Africa

Through her travels, Ms. Johnson realized, though, that life on the continent may not be a fairy tale. “Some areas are thriving and affluent, whereas others are impoverished and in need of assistance,” she said of the disparities that mirror her hometown of Detroit.

Yet, she also recognized that the reality is far from the negative myths and misconceptions portrayed for years in the media.

Everywhere she turns, Ms. Johnson said that the beautiful brown images in advertisements overwhelm her. “In this age of social media, the continent has reimaged itself. Now Africa is on our vision board,” said Ms. Johnson, a self-appointed ambassador for the continent.

“I want to share my stories, my pictures and my videos,” she said. “I want to tell everyone about the richness of the culture and the kindness of the people. I want to pass on everything I have learned.”

Taking the DNA test, Ms. Johnson said, was one of the most profound acts of her life. Recently, it allowed her to share those travel stories with the father who never knew she existed.

“You must go back to your roots so that you can move forward,” Ms. Johnson said. “It is the concept of Sankofa. What has been lost, stripped or taken away from you can be reclaimed, preserved and revived.”

Ms. Beard is a writer and educator based in New York.

GTA holds ‘Invest in Central’ summit in Cape Coast

Participants at the forum

The Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) has held an investment forum in Cape Coast, with a call on Africans in the Diaspora to invest in the diverse potentials of the Central Region.

The maiden edition of the ‘Invest in Central Region’ Summit was organised as part of the national celebration of the 65th Independence Day anniversary to be held in Cape Coast on Sunday, March 6.

The event is expected to provide a platform for professionals and industry players from the private and public sectors to discuss investment opportunities in the region in a bid to explore and optimise its potentials for the common good of the people.

It was also designed to bring Diasporans in the wake of events, to entice them with the different investable areas and to elevate the state of tourism in the region.

Mr Mark OkrakuMantey, the Deputy Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, said Central Region could not be sidelined in Diasporans investments especially as it gave birth to the Pan-African Historical-Theatre Festival (PANAFEST).

He indicated that it was necessary to push the agenda of investment, as tourism in Ghana was gradually recovering from the shock of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The region, he noted, needed more versatile attractions to complement its tourist sites, especially in the Elmina and Cape Coast castles to boost expert investments as arrivals of Diasporans increased

Giving the keynote address, Mrs Justina Marigold Assan, the Central Regional Minister, said it was important to develop and build initiatives to attract sustainable investments the region because it resonated with the President’s vision to create an enabling environment for the Ghana beyond Aid Agenda.

She bemoaned the fact that accolades such as the ‘citadel of education’, ‘tourism hub’ and ‘home of excellence’ given to the region appeared to be just on paper with nothing much to show for them.

“We can do so more by ourselves to keep earning all the accolades that we deserve but to say that we are one of the poorest regions doesn’t sit so well with me and I think we can begin to change the narrative,” she indicated.

MrsAssan said it was time to articulate, project and package the potentials the region carried for the World to know that Ghana and precisely, the Central Region was a home of excellence and a pacesetter of development.

MrAkwasiAgyeman, the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA), said his outfit would not relent on its mandate to coordinate with other stakeholders to ensure that the Region’s vast potentials were developed to its peak.

He said GTA would position itself strategically to give enough room to investors to take due advantage of the resources in the region, which he believed would yield greatly for the nation.

Mr Agyeman further indicated that the ‘Year of Return’ and ‘Beyond the Return’ projects had had its successes in the country, adding, “We intend to continue showcasing the interest of the region to attract people in our bid to change the narrative that investments cannot thrive in the region.”

The Chairman for the event, OsabarimbaKwesi Arthur II, Omanhen on Oguaa Traditional Area, expressed worry over the lack of adequate investments in the region despite its contribution to the country’s history and development. “The region has been the home, where several activities like boxing, film making, Christianity, tourism, politics, began in Ghana, but unfortunately, we are lacking.

“But the time has come for us to move forward,” he stressed, adding that the unenviable status of region as one of the poorest in the Country was unacceptable and invited all hands on deck to change that characterisation.

Forever haunted by the colonial horrors of the past, Cape Coast is one of Africa's most culturally significant spots. This former European colonial capital, originally named Cabo Corso by the Portuguese, was once the largest centre for the trade of enslaved people in West Africa. At the height of the trade it received trafficked people from locations as far away as Niger and Burkina Faso, and enslaved people were kept locked up in the bowels of Cape Coast's imposing castle. At the shoreline, these enslaved people were herded onto vessels like cattle, irrevocably altering the lives of generations to come.

11 Fascinating Things To Know About Ghana's Cape Coast

Cape Coast Castle

Cape Coast is located in Ghana’s Central Region, and thanks to its time as a trading post, the location where many slaves were held before being shipped to the Americas, and its colonial history, it is an important focal point of pan-African history. Here are some of the fascinating things to know about this historic city.

1. michelle obama believes it to be her ancestral home.

A New York Times genealogist traced the former first lady’s roots back through American slavery to Cape Coast and although the details remain under wraps, there was no denying how important it was not only for her, but her entire family, to connect to these faraway roots during her family’s visit to Cape Coast Castle in 2009.

From 1500’s to 1957, the city and port changed hands between the British, Portuguese, Swedish, Danish, and Dutch

This multicultural history speaks to the area’s importance as a trade route that transported not only slaves but gold, honey, and other African spoils; thus making this ideal spot (then called the Gold Coast) the country’s capital until 1877 when it was moved to Accra.

It’s the home of 32 festivals

From local and tribal festivals to larger and more modern ones, Cape Coast is a culturally rich and historical location. Included is the biennial Panafest , a theatre festival established in the 1980s to contemplate the effects of the slave trade. Based on the ideas of W.E.B. Du Bois, there are academic lectures as well as music and dance performances. Another, older festival, Fetu Afahye is celebrated by the chiefs and held to ward off a plague that claimed many lives once upon a time.

Festival rites

Cape Coast Castle was built by the Swedish in 1653 and named it Carolusburg after King Charles X of Sweden

Not many people think about Sweden when discussing colonial West Africa, but the building on the original site was an impermanent trade lodge erected by the Portuguese. Subsequent to this, the Swedes, led by Johann Philipp von Krusenstjerna, built a permanent fort though the Swedes’ time there was not long lived. In the next 11 years, the site the Danes, the Dutch, and the local Fetu chief all made challenges for ownership.

Cape Coast Castle housed slaves from as far away as Burkina Faso and Niger

The Gold Coast was a focal point of a far-reaching slave trade organisation that went far inland to bring slaves from varying regions and tribes all in the name of commerce.

2. It is home to Fort William

Slave records show that the number of people transported from Fort William to Barbados and Jamaica in a single stretch from 1701 to 1708 was over 30,000. This fort, whose location was contested by the French, was a centre of the British slave trade until the illegality of the act in 1807. The impressive remains of the fort can still be seen today.

Fort William, Coronation Road, Cape Coast, Ghana

One of the oldest churches in Ghana is located here

Headed by Joseph Dunwell , The Methodist Church of Cape Coast was set up by Wesleyan missionaries in 1835. The early beginnings of missionaries in the country was a difficult transition as 11 out of the original 21 missionaries died in this new environment. Despite this, they stayed through the various wars and skirmishes and spread their message throughout West Africa.

3. There's a great vegetarian restaurant in the area

Vegetarian in Ghana know how hard it is to find good options in decent restaurants . Save for a couple of regular dishes such as plantain and bean stew, choice is often limited. Baobab House is a vegetarian’s dream and patrons can choose from options including smoothies, curries, stews, and black bread sandwiches while enjoying a seaside view.

A historic bond was signed here between the British and the Fante Federation in 1844

After much fighting with the Ashanti chiefs, British colonial rule officially began with the formal ceding the Cape Coast and strategic places around it from the authority of local chiefs to the British.

4. It is home to The International Stingless Bee Centre

This quaint ecotourism site and centre for environmental education is home to the beekeeping of the varied and little known stingless bees. An international research centre is also on site in this gem off the beaten track, visitors can also sample the delicious honey and pollen.

Cape Coast to host ‘This Is Africa Festival’ in December

The Paramount Chief of the Cape Coast Traditional Area, Osabarimba Kwesi Atta II, has said that Cape Coast would be the hub of special activities and attractions in Ghana every December, starting this year.

Speaking at the official launch of the Destination Ghana Global Project (DGGP) at the Cape Coast Castle on February 25, the Paramount Chief stated that two big events: This Is Africa Festival and the Tourism Business Summit, will happen in Cape Coast every December.

Nana Obokese Ampah, a Director and Cultural Lead for the DGGP explained the project as a private-public collaboration that primarily partners strategic events across the globe to promote Ghanaian businesses, tourism and local cultural festivals while marketing Ghana as the Home of Culture, Warmth & Rhythm.

ghana tourism authority cape coast

Rabbi Kohain Halevi, Executive Director of PANAFEST Foundation

The project was motivated by the Ghana Tourism Authority’s Destination Ghana campaign, launched by Government of Ghana in April 2022 in the United Kingdom.

According to the DGGP Secretariat, the project has identified strategic business summits, tourism conferences, concerts and cultural festivals across the globe that it is collaborating with to market the DGGP’s agenda from May 25, 2023, to November 30, 2023.

All those activities will be climaxed in Cape Coast this December by The Tourism Business Summit and the This Is Africa Festival events.

The Special Guest of Honour for the launch, French Ambassador, H.E Jules Armand Aniambossou pledged his Mission’s partnership with DGGP and reiterated French President Emmanuel Macron’s love and renewed interest in Africa.

“Mr. Macron has a good heart for the continent”, H.E. Aniambossou said. He described France as “a true friend of the African continent” and that France was ready to demonstrate that.

Ambassador Jules-Armand Aniambossou later met with key stakeholders and local government officials at the office of the Mayor of Cape Coast on February 27 to discuss areas of partnership in commerce and tourism development.

In a video message delivered by Ghana’s High Commissioner to Malta, Her Excellency Barbara Akuorkor Benisa, she pledged her Mission’s support for the project.

“As you target to attract over 100,000 visitors to Ghana annually with this project, I am assuring you that I will personally help push the agenda here in Malta. With the help of the Culture and Tourism Ministers here in Malta, I will lead a strong delegation to Ghana to participate in this year’s This Is Africa Festival and the Tourism Summit come December.”

Events producer, Verus Nartey, who has handled successful concerts at all of Ghana’s biggest venues and across the world, commented on the upcoming This Is Africa Festival.

“Cape Coast will experience one big tourism, arts and cultural exposition that will seek to “bring the world home and to connect the African family,” the experienced events producer said.

Cape Coast Mayor, Hon. Ernest Arthur and the Central Regional Minister, Hon. Marigold Assan pledged their offices’ readiness to ensure the two events make the biggest impact in tourism and investment in the Central Region.

In his address, the Executive Director of the PANAFEST Foundation, Rabbi Kohain Halevi, who is leading the pitch sessions to market DGGP said: “Tourism in Ghana can best get up there with Cape Coast as the forerunner. We will be looking for the right partnerships to position this great city as the flagship tourist destination in Africa”.

On the proposed partnership with the French, the Chairman for the launch occasion, Osabraimba Kwesi Atta II, gave an assurance that Cape Coast stood ready to lead the teaching and learning of French in Ghana as well as to welcome French businesses for foreign direct investments.

Musicians Jupitar, Kofi Kinaata, Bessa Simons, Lamisi, Asodzi Cultural Troupe and Flat 5 Band performed at the launch. They were later unveiled as the Music Ambassadors for the project, as they will lead the promotion as well as provide entertainment at DGGP events.

The launch was hosted by Nyanis Addo, Nana Ama Egyirba and Raza Swaag, all of Asaase Radio.

The Destination Ghana Global Project is being organized by the DGGP Secretariat, Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA), Ministry of Foreign Affairs & Regional Integration, Showbiz Africa, Obokese Foundation, Ghana Tourism Authority, Ghana National Chamber of Commerce and Ghana Museums & Monuments Board, RAM Media Concept and SM Group Ltd.

GTA visits 6 sites to promote ‘Experience Ghana, Share Ghana’ campaign

ghana tourism authority cape coast

The Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) as part of its ‘Experience Ghana, Share Ghana’ campaign has visited Kakum National Park, Cape Coast Castle, and Elmina Castle in the Central Region, and Nzulezu, Bisa Abrewa Museum, and Ankasa Resource Reserve in the Western Region.

The move by the GTA is to encourage domestic tourism in the country and market both popular and unfamiliar tourist sites domestically and internationally.

Speaking on why Ghanaians need to visit castles and forts in Ghana, Robert Morgan Mensah, Head of Education at the Castle, said it is important to learn about Ghanaian history and to honour the memories of those who suffered during the slave trade.

“It is fascinating to learn about the different powers that occupied and fought over the same piece of land over the centuries. The dungeons, governor’s residence, tunnels, and other areas give visitors a glimpse into the harsh realities of the transatlantic slave trade. It is again significant to know the symbolism of the Door of No Return and the Door of Return and the role the castle played in the propagation of Christianity in Ghana”.

Benjamin Amoah, a tour guide trainee at Elmina Castle, also noted that visiting the castle offers a chance to appreciate the architecture and craftsmanship that have survived for over five centuries.

At Kakum National Park, Mr. Samuel Dunkwa, Assistant Wildlife Officer with the Wildlife Division of the Forestry Commission of Ghana, revealed that the park has a gift shop where visitors can purchase locally made clothes, jewelry and artifacts.

“Currently, Kakum National Park has diverse plant and animal species, with more than 100 mammals, reptiles, and amphibians. The park offers a variety of activities for visitors to enjoy, such as the canopy walkway, nature walks, treehouse camping, and watching butterflies. There are also recreational facilities like a children’s park and an amusement park where visitors can host small programs. The park has restaurants that serve delicious local food and a gift shop where visitors can purchase locally made cabins, clothes, and artifacts. The waiting area is also well-furnished and equipped with movies of animals in their natural habitat”.

On his part, Sam Isaac, Tourism Officer in-charge of Ankasa Reserves Area, said that the Ankasa National Park offers visitors the opportunity to experience the beauty of Ghana’s nature and unique wildlife. “The park is easily accessible by road and can be visited as a day trip or as part of a longer trip to the Western Region. It is an ideal destination for nature lovers, bird watchers, and anyone interested in exploring Ghana’s rich nature”.

The team further visited Nzulezu, a community noted for its distinctive architecture, with houses built on stilts above the water. The community is also known for its traditional fishing practices. It has its own school, church, and clinic, and residents rely on the lake for transportation, food, and water.

Finally, the team made a stop at the Bisa Abrewa Museum, a private Pan-African Museum that showcases the rich history and culture of Africa and Africans in the diaspora. It features over 200 artifacts, including statues, arts, pictures, and vessels made of gold, bronze, and brass, some of which are 400 years old.

The Domestic Tourism campaign is under the Ghana Tourism Development Project (GTDP) being undertaken under the auspices of the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture.

Implement blueprint to make Ghana-made chocolate affordable – GTA appeals to COCOBOD

By Prince Acquah, GNA

Anomabo (C/R), Feb. 16, GNA – The Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) in the Central Region has called on the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) to expedite the implementation of a blueprint to make locally made chocolate more affordable.

The Authority toured of some historic monuments in the ancient town of Anomabo and a quiz for three selected secondary institutions in Anomabo and Cape Coast to mark this year’s National Chocolate Day.

The students selected from Academy of Christ the king, University Practice Senior High and Kwegyir Aggrey Senior High Technical Schools visited the Memorial Garden of Return, formerly the Heroes Garden, commissioned by former President John Agyekum Kufuor on February 24, 2007, during the Ghana @50 Independence celebration.

They also toured the Fort William built by the British for slave trade activities in 1753 after which a quiz was held to crown it.

The GTA after the tour distributed bars of chocolate to the students and some community members.

The Ridge Royal Hotel supported the celebration with some branded chocolates.

The National Chocolate Day was instituted by government in 2005 to coincide with Valentine’s Day to promote Ghana’s premium chocolate products and make it an integral part of the country’s tourism experience.

This year’s celebration was on the theme: “Eat chocolate, stay healthy, grow Ghana.”

Despite the State’s efforts to make the consumption of Ghana-made chocolate a routine for every Ghanaian, the product is sorely expensive for which reason many citizens, including cocoa farmers, could not afford.

In many parts of the country, a bar of chocolate sells between GHC10.00, GHC17.00 and GHC20.00 which is far beyond the means of many Ghanaians who struggle to afford three-square meals a day.

The Ghana News Agency (GNA) observed that the prices of chocolates go up in every Valentine season after which they never plummet.

This situation is counterproductive to the agenda to promote made-in-Ghana cocoa products, many consumers noted.

Mr Charles Kwaku Buabin, the Regional Director of GTA, speaking to the GNA at the celebration, noted that the Ghana Cocoa Board was aware of the situation and was working assiduously to make chocolate affordable.

He said the Board and its stakeholders had developed a comprehensive blueprint to make Ghana-made cocoa products less expensive to realise the vision of boosting the economy, tourism and health with cocoa.

He, therefore, implored the Board to step up efforts to implement the plan to change the status quo as soon as practicable.

Mr Buabin observed that the National Chocolate Day had largely succeeded in promoting pure love among spouses, families and friends on Valentine’s Day, and mitigated the promiscuity associated the Day.

“Initially, people would drink alcohol and engage in promiscuous lifestyle as part of Valentine.

“But now, as Chocolate Day, we are promoting a healthy lifestyle, a healthy way of showing love, a healthy way of extending love to deprived communities and underprivileged individuals among us,” he said.

He called on Corporate Ghana to embrace the day and promote it in their own small ways to achieve the goal of a more morally upright society.

He said the Authority chose Anomabo to popularise the tourism facilities among Senior High Schools and make them familiar with the cultural and historic heritage of the ancient town.

Mr Victor Nana Osei Gyasi, the Site Manager of the Anomabo Tourist Information Centre, who guided the tour, also reiterated the need to promote Ghana’s cocoa products to increase consumption, pay back the hardworking farmers and boost the economy.

“When sensitisation goes down well and translates into consumption, it will definitely drive down the prices of chocolate because of economies of scale,” he indicated.

He urged the students to be patriotic, vigilant, and firm in their mind not to allow slavery to happen to Ghana again in any form.

Mr Nii Adjetey Adjei, the Senior Human Resource Manager of the Mfantseman Municipal Assembly, who represented the Municipal Chief Executive, advised the students against leaving Ghana to escape hardship.

“Stay and fight and work and make sure everything works for the country. The countries you are running to are over 200 years and so if stay you here and ensure the country works, we are going to be like them,” he said.
