Fellow Carter Move Mug Review

The super insulated ceramic lined travel mug.

If you find that stainless steel lined travel mugs affect the taste of your coffee and you haven’t yet tried a ceramic lined travel mug, this could be the one for you. The Fellow Carter Move Mug has beauty and function. In this Fellow Carter Move Mug review I’ll share all of my testing, research and thoughts as well as detail on a smelly issue that has plagued some of these mugs. 

What We Like

• Ceramic lined , to replicate drinking from a ceramic mug at home, avoiding metallic or plastic tastes which happen with some travel mugs. 
• Beautiful aesthetics,  if the style of your travel mug is important to you, they do not come much better looking than this. 
• Super insulation , the Fellow Carter Move mug is at the top of our test results for keeping coffee hot. 
• 100% leak proof whichever lid option you choose.
• An 8oz option , a lot of brands do not go down to this size. When paired with the Move lid it makes a really good mini thermos for coffee.

What We Don't Like

• Not as tough as some other travel mugs like a YETI or Stanley.
• Not dishwasher safe, hand washing only is recommended for Fellow Carter Move mugs.
• Many users report an issue with a bad smell , more on that in the full review below.

Carter Move Mug Design

The Carter Move Mug has a stainless steel body and the inside of the mug is lined with a ceramic coating. It’s difficult to show in a photograph, but there is a single joint line running up the side of the ceramic lining, potentially a weak point where the seam may split. The mug comes in 8oz, 12oz and 16oz sizes. A lot of brands don’t go down to an 8 oz size so this is a nice option, it feels more akin to carrying a regular coffee cup or disposable coffee cup than most larger travel mugs do. Each size is 3″ wide and only the height varies. With the lid off, the top of the mug has a thin steel lip for drinking directly from the mug. The mug has a powder coated paint finish which adds to its aesthetic and comes in enough colors to suit everyone. 

There are 3 lids options for hot drinks, which fit any size of move mug; the move lid, slide lid and carry lid. You can currently buy a move mug with either a move lid or slide lid. Each lid type can also be purchased separately. The carry lid is new and I have yet to try it. I’ll update this review once I’ve had a chance to use it. It seems like a great option for carrying the mug on the move though I’m not yet convinced that I like the look of the carry lid. 

Not long after I started using the 8oz mug I accidentally dropped it on my concrete driveway. It did pick up a small dent and crack in the paint as you can see in the photograph. Thankfully since this is on the bottom of the mug, its not very noticeable and the paint hasn’t peeled away where the crack is. I think you will need to care well for your mug if you want it to keep looking as good as it does when you first buy it. I would describe this as a mug designed for the city and it doesn’t compete with outdoor brands like YETI or Stanley for ruggedness. 

Fellow Carter Move Lid

The Fellow Carter Move lid is a screw on lid which allows you to use the mug like a thermos. The lid has no drinking spout, you remove the lid and drink directly from the cup. The Move lid comes with a splash guard insert for the mug to help prevent splashes when you have the lid off. 

I really like the styling of the mug with the move lid, it is really pretty. The 8oz mug in particular is really cute. I also don’t mind drinking directly from the cup, the only downside for me is that I have hold the lid or find somewhere to put it down whilst I’m drinking which doesn’t work in every scenario. With the lid off, the mug doesn’t hold temperatures for as long as mugs with small drinking holes in their lids. I think the move lid is ideal for someone who wants a compact leak proof solution to pack their coffee to bring somewhere like an office where you will drink at a desk and plan to drink it fairly soon after opening. 

One of my sisters likes to bring a cup of tea on the school run in the morning and she loves this mug because she can drop her tea bag under the splash guard and drink. With other mugs the tea bag would block the drinking hole. You have to be careful not to burn your fingers when you’re pushing the splash guard into the mug but it is pretty effective at stopping your drink from splashing out of the mug on the move. 

Fellow Carter Move Mug Slide Lock Lid

The slide lock lid transforms the Fellow Carter thermos into a mug that you can drink from without removing the lid. Like the carter move lid the Fellow Carter Move Mug slide lock lid is designed to be leak proof and I found in my testing that it is. The only time this leaked was when I filled it above capacity and that surplus water was pushed out when the lid was screwed on. 

The lid opening is a bit different compared to usual travel mug lids. A thin disk on top of the lid slides back to reveal a drinking spout underneath. The disk then overhangs the rest of the mug whilst open. 

With the slide lock lid, you can keep your coffee hot whilst drinking from the mug, it has excellent performance in my insulation testing. There are a few things  I don’t like about this lid which may also be important for you:

• The sliding disk is a bit awkward to push back. There is a little groove to place your thumb in but it would be much easier if there was actually something to grip. You need two hands to open the mug unless it is sitting on a steady surface.
• I find that my nose bumps on the disk when drinking.

There are also a couple of positives:

• The lid dismantles for thorough cleaning. 
• It is very obvious when the mug is open so you don’t risk putting it in your bag in the open position. I have done this a few times with other mugs after forgetting to double check for example on a YETI bottle hot shot cap its easy to think the lid is fully closed when it isn’t. 

Fellow Travel Mug Insulation Performance

The insulation performance of the Fellow Carter Move Mug is excellent, especially with the Move Lid. The 8oz size can keep coffee hot for up to 9 hours which matches the performance of the 30oz YETI mug. Larger volumes will inherently stay hotter for longer so this is exceptional. The sacrifice is obviously lack of a drinking hole in the lid so I would recommend the Move Lid if you want a mini thermos for coffee where you will drink your tea or coffee soon as opening or only open the mug briefly to decant. 

The 8oz Fellow Carter Move Mug is currently top of my insulation performance for small mugs with either the Move Lid or Slide Lock Lid. Whilst the slide lock lid does not insulate as well as the move lid, it is still an excellent option. The 16oz Fellow Carter Move Mug with a slide lock is in joint top position with medium sized mugs from Stanley and YETI in my insulation testing. Fellow Carter Move Mug Cleaning

One of the downsides of the Fellow Carter Move Mug is that its not dishwasher safe. Fellow recommend hand washing with an non abrasive sponge to prevent damage to the mug exterior or the ceramic lining. This isn’t a huge problem for me but its a red line for some of our team. 

Cleaning the Carter Move Lid is really simple, I just remove the grey rubber gasket and can then quickly and easily clean all areas of the lid. There is nowhere for any dirt to linger or mould to grow un-noticed. 

Cleaning the Slide Lock Lid is not as straightforward as the Move Lid or as easy as some other travel mugs but the lid does dismantle to allow all areas to be fully cleaned. It isn’t immediately obvious from looking at the lid, but the mug comes with some written instructions on how to dismantle and Fellow have also published a helpful video . 

There have been a lot of reports from Fellow Carter Mug users of an odd garlicy musty smell from their mugs that is difficult to shift. It seems a bit of a mystery on where exactly the smell comes from or what causes it. Some people think it comes from the mug itself and other people think it comes from the lid or rubber gasket. Some find the smell starts straight away and for others it develops after some time. We’ve tried five of these mugs so far and have experienced a smell in one only. We contacted Fellow who asked us to try cleaning again with some baking soda, which didn’t resolve the issue. The mug was replaced by Fellow and so far all is well with the replacement. I have read feedback from others though that replacements have not been offered.

The Fellow Carter Move mug currently has an 83% 5 star rating based on lots of Amazon reviews so it does look like the majority of people do not experience any problems. Hopefully this review has given you all of the info you need to decide whether the positives out weigh the risks.
