FDOT Accelerates Significant Portions of I-4 Ultimate Project

~ Segments of westbound general use lanes and SR 408 interchange to be completed 1-2 months early ~

April 11, 2020

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. –  Furthering Governor Ron DeSantis’ direction to accelerate transportation projects across Florida, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) is expediting significant portions of the I-4 Ultimate Project in Orlando. With the ability to increase lane closures and extend work hours because of the reduction in traffic from COVID-19, FDOT plans to complete segments of the westbound general use lanes and their connection to the SR 408 interchange by Summer 2020, which is 1-2 months earlier. This acceleration will also help continue to provide much-needed jobs throughout Central Florida.

“The Department completely understands that I-4 is a major artery within our state’s transportation system and delivering these significant portions of the I-4 Ultimate Project is a huge win for Florida’s residents and economy,” said Florida Department of Transportation Secretary Kevin J. Thibault, P.E. “We are thrilled to accelerate as many segments of the project as possible so Central Florida residents can experience enhanced mobility on the corridor once we return to normal after COVID-19.”

The $2.3 billion I-4 Ultimate project will reconstruct 21 miles of I-4 from west of Kirkman Road to east of State Road 434 in Longwood. The specific segments of the I-4 Ultimate project that will be accelerated include:

  • Segments of Westbound I-4 through downtown Orlando.
  • Portions of the SR 408 interchange.

Acceleration of work in these areas will put more lanes of westbound I-4 into final configuration, reduce the number of construction sequences that would have occurred, and greatly reduce congestion through the most heavily traveled interchange within the I-4 Ultimate project.

No additional costs will be incurred or paid to accelerate these work activities. Maps of the planned detours and lane closures are attached and posted below reference.

FDOT continues to look for opportunities to accelerate projects across the state during this low traffic period and will share those updates as they are available.

FDOT Accelerates Critical Infrastructure Projects Valued at $2.1 Billion

~ Reduction in traffic allows state to expedite transportation improvements, provide needed jobs ~

April 1, 2020

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. –  At the direction of Governor Ron DeSantis, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) has started accelerating critical infrastructure projects, which are valued at $2.1 Billion. Due to a reduction in traffic throughout Florida during the fight against COVID-19, FDOT will expedite crucial improvements to the state’s transportation system and provide much needed jobs.

“The Governor understands that Florida’s transportation system is the backbone of our economy and FDOT is proud to accelerate projects, which will help expedite goods to market and provide much needed jobs throughout the state,” said Florida Department of Transportation Secretary Kevin J. Thibault, P.E. “Safety is our top priority, so we will continue to ensure that employees have the sanitation supplies needed to follow the guidance from the CDC and work with our industry partners to implement these same precautions to keep workers safe and healthy.”

Following an initial review of all pending construction projects across all FDOT districts, including the Florida Turnpike Enterprise, FDOT has identified the following projects to be accelerated:

  • The $864M Howard Frankland Bridge project in the Tampa Bay area will be accelerated by nearly 4 weeks.
  • The widening of Southern Boulevard (SR 80) in western Palm Beach County will be accelerated by nearly 3 months.
  • In Miami-Dade, the I-395/SR 836/I-95 Design Build Project is an $802 million reconstruction project being done in coordination with the local expressway authority that will be accelerated by 4 weeks.
  • The project at Sand Lake Road (SR 482) near the heavy tourist area of International Drive and Universal Boulevard in Orlando will be accelerated by 4 to 6 weeks.

Several other projects, by region, include:

Southeast Florida

  • Phase one of construction on the US-1 Cow Key Bridge in Monroe County will be accelerated by 1 week.

Southwest Florida

  • Paving along I-75 at the SR 70 Interchange in Manatee County will be accelerated by 2 weeks.
  • Paving, widening and signal upgrades along State Road 951 in southern Collier County will be accelerated by 4 weeks.

Northwest Florida

  • The 23rd Street Flyover project at the intersection of US 98 and 23rd Street in Bay County will be accelerated by 1 week.

Northeast Florida

  • The Diverging Diamond Interchange on SR 200 (A1A) at Interstate 95 in Nassau County, the first of its kind in Northeast Florida, will be accelerated by two months.

NAACP Travel Advisory for the State of Florida

Under its current Governor, the State of Florida has engaged in an all-out attack on Black Americans, accurate Black history, voting rights, members of the LGBTQ+community, immigrants, women's reproductive rights, and free speech, while simultaneously embracing a culture of fear, bullying, and intimidation by public officials. In his effort to rewrite American history to exclude the voices, contributions of African Americans and the challenges they overcame despite the systemic racism that African Americans have faced since first arriving in this country, Governor DeSantis has signed various controversial anti-civil rights measures into law; including the Combatting Violence, Disorder and Looting and Law Enforcement Protection Act Florida HB 1, Stop Wrongs against Our Kids and Employees Act ("Stop W.O.K.E. Act") Florida HB 7, Constitutional Carry Act Florida House HB 543, Florida Senate Bill 266, and Florida Senate Bill 7066.

Under the leadership of Governor Ron DeSantis, the State of Florida has criminalized protests, restricted the ability of educators to teach African-American history, and engaged in a blatant war against diversity and inclusion. On a seeming quest to silence African-American voices, the Governor and the State of Florida have shown that African Americans are not welcome in the State of Florida. Due to this sustained, blatant, relentless and systemic attack on democracy and civil rights, the NAACP hereby issues a travel advisory to African Americans, and other people of color regarding the hostility towards African Americans in Florida.

Please be advised that Florida is openly hostile toward African Americans, people of color and LGBTQ+ individuals. Before traveling to Florida, please understand that the State of Florida devalues and marginalizes the contributions of and the challenges faced by African Americans and other minorities.

If you decide to travel to Florida:

  • Please be advised that Florida public schools will not teach your children accurate African-American history, which includes a history of enslavement, segregation, racial injustice, and systemic racism.
  • Please be advised that the State of Florida does not value diversity, equity, and inclusion in Florida schools, colleges, and universities.
  • Please be advised that the State of Florida does not welcome the contributions of African Americans and people of color.

Please be advised that individuals may carry concealed firearms without permits in Florida.

Please be advised that there is a stand-your-ground law in Florida.

If you do decide to travel to Florida, please exercise extreme care in all parts of the state. Be aware of your surroundings.

  • If you do decide to go to the State of Florida, please be aware of the open hostility towards African Americans and people of color.
  • If you do decide to go to the State of Florida, please advocate for legislation that supports diversity in all aspects of education.
  • If you do decide to go to the State of Florida, please advocate for the right to peacefully assemble and protest any unjust laws or actions by the State.
  • If you do decide to go to the State of Florida, please advocate for the protection of African-American's right to vote.
  • We urge all, including those who travel to the State of Florida, to join the NAACP in our fight against the unjust attack on civil liberties, principles of diversity and inclusion, the right to vote, and the right to assemble in peaceful protest.

If you are a resident of Florida, we ask you to join us in our advocacy efforts to defeat the regressive policies of this Governor and this state legislature. Our greatest asset is the voice of the millions who speak up every day to protect our democracy and our civil rights.

This advisory will remain in effect until further notice.

ORLANDO, Fla. — The NAACP over the weekend issued a travel advisory for Florida, joining two other civil rights groups in warning potential tourists that recent laws and policies championed by Gov. Ron DeSantis and Florida lawmakers are "openly hostile toward African Americans, people of color and LGBTQ+ individuals."

The NAACP, long an advocate for Black Americans, joined the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), a Latino civil rights organization, and Equality Florida, a gay rights advocacy group, in issuing travel advisories for the Sunshine State, where tourism is one of the state's largest job sectors.

The warning approved Saturday by the NAACP's board of directors tells tourists that, before traveling to Florida, they should understand the state of Florida "devalues and marginalizes the contributions of, and the challenges faced by African Americans and other communities of color."

Critics say Florida aims to rewrite history by rejecting African American studies

Critics say Florida aims to rewrite history by rejecting African American studies

An email was sent Sunday morning to DeSantis' office seeking comment. The Republican governor is expected to announce a run for the GOP presidential nomination this week.

Florida is one of the most popular states in the U.S. for tourists, and tourism is one of its biggest industries. More than 137.5 million tourists visited Florida last year, marking a return to pre-pandemic levels, according to Visit Florida, the state's tourism promotion agency. Tourism supports 1.6 million full-time and part-time jobs, and visitors spent $98.8 billion in Florida in 2019, the last year figures are available.

Several of Florida's Democratic mayors were quick to say Sunday that their cities welcomed diversity and inclusion.

"EVERYONE is always welcome and will be treated with dignity and respect," tweeted Mayor Ken Welch of St. Petersburg in a message echoed by the mayor across the bay in Tampa.

"That will never change, regardless of what happens in Tallahassee," tweeted Mayor Jane Castor of Tampa.

Disney sues Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, claiming 'government retaliation'

Disney sues Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, claiming 'government retaliation'

The NAACP's decision comes after the DeSantis' administration in January rejected the College Board's Advanced Placement African American Studies course . DeSantis and Republican lawmakers also have pressed forward with measures that ban state colleges from having programs on diversity, equity and inclusion, as well as critical race theory , and also passed the Stop WOKE Act that restricts certain race-based conversations and analysis in schools and businesses.

In its warning for Hispanic travelers considering a visit to Florida, LULAC cited a new law that prohibits local governments from providing money to organizations that issue identification cards to people illegally in the country and invalidates out-of-state driver's licenses held by undocumented immigrants, among other things. The law also requires hospitals that accept Medicaid to include a citizenship question on intake forms, which critics have said is intended to dissuade immigrants living in the U.S. illegally from seeking medical care.

"The actions taken by Governor DeSantis have created a shadow of fear within communities across the state," said Lydia Medrano, a LULAC vice president for the Southeast region.

Recent efforts to limit discussion on LGBTQ topics in schools, the removal of books with gay characters from school libraries, a recent ban on gender-affirming care for minors, new restrictions on abortion access and a law allowing Floridians to carry concealed guns without a permit contributed to Equality Florida's warning.

"Taken in their totality, Florida's slate of laws and policies targeting basic freedoms and rights pose a serious risk to the health and safety of those traveling to the state," Equality Florida's advisory said.

Traveling to Florida is DANGEROUS

Know the risks, know your rights, protect yourself, reconsider travel to florida due to unconstitutional law that targets immigrant communities and abuse civil liberties, caution advised for travelers to florida.

Travel to all areas of Florida should be done with extreme caution as it can be particularly unsafe for people of color, LGBTQIA+ communities and individuals who speak with an accent, and international travelers. Due to unconstitutional legislation signed by Governor Ron DeSantis and supported by Legislative Leadership, every county in Florida poses a heightened risk of harassment, possible detainment, and potential family separation based on racial profiling.

Unconstitutional Legislation Increases Risk in Florida

In Florida, routine daily activities for those who cannot immediately prove United States Citizenship and lawful residency at all times may result in devastating consequences. These consequences include arrest for operating a vehicle, no matter the state you are from, reduced access to healthcare services, and compromised safety. Exercise extra caution if you are over 6 weeks pregnant due to restrictions on reproductive health services.

Risks for Accompanying Individuals in Florida

Family members or friends accompanying a person without a regulated immigration status traveling into the state may be subject to unconstitutional questioning about involvement in transporting or providing any other form of aid. The accompanying individuals, including U.S. citizens and tourists, may be subject to 15 years in prison and up to a $15,000 fine.

Racial Profiling in Florida Affects Many

Naturalized and U.S. Citizens of African, Latin-American, Central American, Native American, Asian, and Pacific Islander descent are not immune from racial profiling, heightened scrutiny, and false arrest.

Consult an Attorney Before Traveling to Florida

It is recommended to consult with a licensed attorney if you fall into any of the above mentioned groups before traveling to Florida in order to assess the level of danger you may encounter in being searched, questioned, and/or arrested.

Caution at Florida Airports and Bus Stations.

Show extreme care in areas around Florida’s 120 Airports as well as at Greyhouse, Megabus and RedCoach bus transportation stations.

Assaults on Medical Freedom

Florida’s Boards of Medicine and Osteopathy have adopted policies banning access to lifesaving medical care for transgender youth and the Agency For Health Care Administration has eliminated Medicaid coverage for transgender adults accessing that care.

Florida is poised to pass laws creating criminal penalties for medical providers who provide medically necessary care for transgender youth, weaponizing the courts to shred existing child custody agreements and reassign transgender youth to an unsupportive parent, and severely restricting access to prescribed medical care for transgender adults.

Florida has passed or is poised to pass bills that restrict access to reproductive health care, including a near-total abortion ban, which threatens to force people to travel out of state or seek unsafe, illegal abortions.

If you decide on travel to Florida, make a clear safety plan

Equality Florida Issues Advisory Warning For Travel

ST. PETERSBURG, FL --  Today, Equality Florida took the extraordinary step of issuing a travel advisory, warning of the risks posed to the health, safety, and freedom of those considering short or long term travel, or relocation to the state. The move comes in response to a wave of safety inquiries Equality Florida has received following the passage of laws that are hostile to the LGBTQ community, restrict access to reproductive health care, repeal gun safety laws, foment racial prejudice, and attack public education by banning books and censoring curriculum.

“As an organization that has spent decades working to improve Florida’s reputation as a welcoming and inclusive place to live work and visit, it is with great sadness that we must respond to those asking if it is safe to travel to Florida or remain in the state as the laws strip away basic rights and freedoms,” said Nadine Smith, Equality Florida Executive Director . “While losing conferences, and top students who have written off Florida threatens lasting damage to our state, it is most heartbreaking to hear from parents who are selling their homes and moving because school censorship, book bans and health care restrictions have made their home state less safe for their children. We understand everyone must weigh the risks and decide what is best for their safety, but whether you stay away, leave or remain we ask that you join us in countering these relentless attacks.  Help reimagine and build a Florida that is truly safe for and open to all, and where freedom is a reality, not a hollow campaign slogan.”

Governor Ron DeSantis, who has made the extremist policies the centerpiece of his presidential campaign strategy, has weaponized state agencies to silence critics and impose sanctions on large and small  companies that dissent with his culture war agenda or disagree with his attacks on diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Already, the adopted and proposed policies detailed in the travel advisory have led Florida parents to consider relocating , prospective students to cross Florida colleges and universities off their lists , events and conferences to cancel future gatherings , and the United States military to offer redeployment for service members whose families are now unsafe in the state. Businesses have spoken out against the governor’s abuse of state power to punish dissent, with Disney CEO Bob Iger calling DeSantis “ anti-business and anti-Florida .” The worsening attacks, especially those targeting transgender youth, have also led to the proposal of policies around the country to provide refuge for those fleeing states like Florida.

The Florida Immigrant Coalition, a statewide immigrant rights coalition of 65 member organizations and over 100 allies, also issued a travel advisory today , urging reconsideration of travel to Florida and providing critical information about where immigrant travelers can learn more about their constitutional rights. And just weeks ago, Florida chapters of the NAACP voted unanimously to request similar warnings to the Black community about the risk of traveling or relocating to the state.

Equality Florida's full travel advisory follows.

Subj.: TRAVEL ADVISORY: FLORIDA MAY NOT BE A SAFE PLACE TO MOVE OR VISIT

Date: April 12, 2023

Today, Equality Florida took the unprecedented step of issuing a travel advisory to individuals, families, entrepreneurs, and students warning that Florida may not be a safe place to visit or take up residence. The advisory comes after passage of laws that are hostile to the LGBTQ+ community, restrict access to reproductive health care, repeal gun safety laws and allow untrained, unpermitted carry, and foment racial prejudice. The Governor has also weaponized state agencies to impose sanctions against businesses large and small that disagree with his attacks on diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Florida has recently adopted a slate of hateful laws, and is fast-tracking additional measures that directly target the rights of LGBTQ+ individuals and basic freedoms broadly. Already, those policies have led Florida parents to consider relocating , prospective students to cross Florida colleges and universities off their lists , events and conferences to cancel future gatherings , and the United States military to offer redeployment for service members whose families are now unsafe in the state. These laws and policies are detailed below.

Assaults on Medical Freedom

Florida’s Boards of Medicine and Osteopathy have adopted policies banning access to lifesaving medical care for transgender youth and the Agency For Health Care Administration has eliminated Medicaid coverage for transgender adults accessing that care

Florida is poised to pass laws creating criminal penalties for medical providers who provide medically necessary care for transgender youth, weaponizing the courts to shred existing child custody agreements and reassign transgender youth to an unsupportive parent, and severely restricting access to prescribed medical care for transgender adults

Florida has passed or is poised to pass bills that restrict access to reproductive health care, including a near-total abortion ban, which threatens to force people to travel out of state or seek unsafe, illegal abortions.

These policies disproportionately harm marginalized communities, including the direct impacts on the transgender community and communities of color, and could lead to serious health consequences. Transgender people in Florida are facing the immediate threat of loss of lifesaving, medically necessary care and families risk interference in child custody arrangements at the hands of an unsupportive parent and a weaponized state court system. These attacks pose an imminent threat to the health and safety of all in Florida and potential travelers should be aware of the risks.

Assaults on Academic Freedom

The Florida legislature has sought to strip Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programs from colleges and universities, that help LGBTQ and minority students thrive

The Governor has initiated a hostile, right-wing takeover of higher education, and installed partisan allies to implement a conservative overhaul of public universities

His administration has taken aim at AP African American studies, threatening to sever ties with the College Board over the inclusion of queer history and intersectionality in the course, and college majors, including gender studies

These actions by the Governor pose a serious threat to academic freedom, free speech, and the pursuit of knowledge. DEI departments play a crucial role in promoting diversity and inclusion on campus, and their removal undermines the ability of students and faculty to engage in critical discussions about issues of race, gender, and identity.

Furthermore, the replacement of university presidents with political appointees threatens the independence of higher education institutions, and undermines the ability of these institutions to make decisions that are in the best interest of their students, faculty, and staff. These attacks on public education are deeply concerning, and further reinforce the message that Florida is not a welcoming state for people from all backgrounds. We urge individuals, families, entrepreneurs, and students to consider the implications of traveling to or residing in Florida, and to support efforts to defend public education and academic freedom in the state.

Censorship and Erasure of the LGBTQ Community

Florida has passed a prohibition on classroom instruction on sexual orientation and gender identity in public schools

This law has already precipitated a raft of damaging impacts in school districts across the state, including

Hundreds of book challenges and bans targeting titles written by LGBTQ authors and/or including LGBTQ characters

The refusal of districts like Miami-Dade to recognize LGBTQ History Month

The removal of rainbow Safe Space stickers

The censorship of graduation speech content to remove references to LGBTQ identities

Warnings to educators and administrators to hide family photos

Lawmakers are currently considering a bill to extend that prohibition through 8th grade, while the Department of Education is set to decide on a policy proposal that would expand it to all grades and revoke teacher licenses over violations

Florida is poised to pass a bill that would ban transgender people from updating their birth certificates to reflect their gender identity

The infamous Don’t Say LGBTQ law has made Florida synonymous with the anti-LGBTQ movement to empower government censorship and book banning across the nation. That law, along with additional proposals being considered, has turned the state’s classrooms into political battlefields and is telegraphing to LGBTQ families and students that they are not welcome in Florida.

Assaults on Arts, Entertainment, and Sports Participation

Florida has passed a ban on transgender women and girls from participating in school sports consistent with their gender identity

Lawmakers are poised to pass restrictions on certain live drag performances, stage shows, and local pride celebrations, limiting parents’ ability to determine what content may be suitable for their families

The far-right’s obsession with drag queens has put LGBTQ people in physical danger across the country, but especially in Florida. In 2022 alone, the LGBTQ media organization GLAAD found 141 incidents of anti-LGBTQ protests and threats targeting drag events. Right-wing media like Fox News and Libs Of TikTok have misrepresented what occurs at drag events and taken examples out of context to create fear and misunderstanding. This has had real world consequences, with protests and threats of violence against venues hosting drag shows.

In Florida, Orlando organizers were forced to cancel Drag Queen story hour due to threats from Neo-Nazis . This last December in Lakeland , masked individuals in Nazi gear, waving Nazi flags ambushed a charity event hosted by drag queens while projecting hateful messages onto local buildings.

Assaults on Business

DeSantis has recently signed a bill that restricts businesses from providing diversity and inclusion training to their employees, a blatant attempt to dictate to businesses what they can and cannot do, and to prevent them from training their employees to be better prepared for a diverse workforce and customer base

The Florida legislature is expected to pass SB 1438, which weaponizes state agencies with more power to politically target LGBTQ-friendly businesses who open their doors to live drag performances, with threats of fines, license revocation, and jail time. Individuals that admit minors with an accompanying parent would be charged with first degree misdemeanor crimes.

The governor has weaponized the state legislature against businesses that stand with their LGBTQ employees and clients and against his agenda, most notably wielding two special sessions of the legislature to punish Disney, the state’s largest single-site employer

The Miami Herald recently reported that DeSantis-controlled agencies sought to punish and revoke the liquor license of an Orlando establishment that hosted a live drag performance even after the state’s own investigators reported that they saw nothing “lewd”. The discriminatory targeting of LGBTQ-friendly businesses by the state will have a broader chilling effect over drag performances, an intended consequence of this type of censorship.

Disney has also recently denounced the governor’s actions against them, with CEO Bob Iger calling the state’s policies “ anti-business and anti-Florida .”

These laws and actions are harmful to businesses and their employees, as they undermine efforts to create inclusive workplaces and hinder the ability to effectively engage with diverse customers and clients. It also sends a message that Florida is not a welcoming state for people from all backgrounds and that discrimination is acceptable.

Efforts to Foment Racial Prejudice

Florida has passed a bill that would limit the honest teaching of history and systemic racism in schools

The state passed another that restricts voting access for people of color and is currently considering additional voting restrictions

DeSantis’ new elections police have abused their power to aggressively target and prosecute returning citizens, mostly Black Floridians, for voting after official government entities told them they were eligible to vote

These laws create an unsafe and unwelcoming environment for LGBTQ+ individuals, women, people of color, and other marginalized communities. They send a message that discrimination and prejudice are acceptable in Florida, and we cannot in good conscience encourage people to visit or move to a state that is openly hostile to their basic human rights.

As a result of these dangerous and discriminatory laws, we urge individuals, families, entrepreneurs, and students to reconsider travel plans to Florida and to consider the impact that their travel and economic choices can have on promoting equality and justice for all.

Repealing of Gun Safety Laws

The passage of deadly permitless carry makes Floridians less safe and signals the reversal of the progress made after Pulse and Parkland. Coupled with the state’s infamous Stand Your Ground law, Permitless Carry threatens to exacerbate Florida’s violent crime rate at a time when the state’s homicide rate ranks 20th in the nation, exceeding both California and New York.

LGBTQ Floridians know all too well that the gun lobby's obsession with easy access to deadly weapons can make hatred and bigotry lethal . Gun violence is not abstract or hypothetical -- it is stealing our loved ones. Those considering travel to Florida should weigh the potentially deadly consequences of the DeSantis Administration’s decision to eliminate basic training and permitting requirements in order to concealed carry a firearm.

Attacks on Immigrant Communities

Florida has passed and is poised to pass legislation targeting immigrant communities, with consequences that could include arrest for operating a vehicle, no matter the state you are from, reduced access to health care services, and compromised safety. A bill currently being considered by the Florida legislature could impose criminal penalties on any who shelter, support, or provide transportation to undocumented immigrants. And these moves come just months after Governor DeSantis trafficked migrants from Texas to Massachusetts in a cruel scheme to use their suffering as campaign marketing material.

The threats posed to immigrants in Florida led the Florida Immigrant Coalition to issue its own advisory urging reconsideration of any travel to the state. That advisory can be found here .

Taken in their totality, Florida’s slate of laws and policies targeting basic freedoms and rights pose a serious risk to the health and safety of those traveling to the state. We regret that these attacks have already led many to flee the state and are driving others to consider relocation. And, in a state whose economy is fueled by visitors from around the world, it is with great sadness that Equality Florida has had to take the extraordinary step of responding to inquiries by issuing an official advisory warning about the risks of travel to the state.

Equality Florida will continue providing information and resources to those impacted by these laws and policies. Visit our Open Doors Florida directory to find businesses with nondiscrimination policies and procedures. And if you experience discrimination, report it to our team here or call our Main Office at 813-870-3735.

It is our hope that those Floridians who can, will stay and engage more deeply in the fight against the state’s all-out assaults on democracy and freedom. This moment calls for a grassroots movement in defense of justice and equality for all -- so that we can turn back the tide of right wing authoritarianism, recommit to building a state that is safe and open to all, and once again celebrate Florida as a free state.

Mexico under caution warning from U.S. for spring break. 5 Florida beach towns to go to instead

Fort lauderdale, panama city and daytona beach not the only florida spring break destinations.

travel alerts florida

College students and families planning a spring break in Mexico may want to reconsider, according to an advisory issued by the U.S. Embassy and Consulates in Mexico.

The advisory , posted Monday, says that while many thousands of people travel through Mexico safely, Mexico-bound visitors should be aware of high levels of crime (particularly in the downtown areas of popular spring break destinations Cancún. , Playa Del Carmen and Tulum), sexual assault, counterfeit or ineffective prescription drugs, unregulated alcohol, high-priced hospitals and strict laws against drunk and disorderly behavior, possession of drugs, guns or ammunition, along with natural dangers such as dangerous beaches without lifeguards or warnings.

Well, if you're looking for a new spring break vacation location, the party did start in Florida.

Ever since a New York university swim coach took his team down to Florida one spring for some early training in the 1930s, the idea of spending a week or two in the warm has been a powerful motivator, building up to hundreds of thousands of bathing-suit-clad students bringing their volleyballs and fake IDs to Fort Lauderdale, Panama City Beach and Daytona Beach in the 1980s. Crackdowns on public behavior and stricter alcohol laws calmed the parties down a bit, and famed party town Miami Beach is pushing back hard against spring break this year.

But Florida still remains a top destination for people wanting a break from the cold, with March temps projected in the 70s.

If you're avoiding Mexico this year and don't want to bother with a passport, Fort Lauderdale, Daytona Beach and Panama City Beach are still top places to relax, unwind and enjoy yourself. But the Sunshine State has other locations to consider besides those annual favorites.

‘You are going to pay the price:’ DeSantis sends more cops to Florida spring break hot spots. Here’s where

1. TripAdvisor names Siesta Beach one of the best in the world

If you want the best, head to the west. Siesta Beach in Siesta Key, west of Sarasota on the state's west coast, regularly makes TripAdvisor's list of best beaches based on user reviews. Currently listed at No. 2 in the United States and No. 9 worldwide , the site praises the snow-white sand and small-town feel.

"Whether you want to relax or fill your day with activities, Siesta Beach delivers," Tripadvisor said on its website.

"Kick back on the white sand, go swimming in the clear water, play some outdoor sports, or simply admire the sunset — it's up to you. The family-friendly beach is easy to get to via public transportation, offers wheelchair access, and has plenty of parking, restrooms, and a small concession stand. There are a variety of shops and lively restaurants nearby, too."

Siesta Key, on the brilliant green waters of the Gulf of Mexico, is close to lots of restaurants and bars, a thriving arts community, and one of the largest state parks in Florida, Myakka River State Park.

Take that, Hawaii! : This Florida beach tops Dr. Beach's Top 10 list for 2023

2. Delray Beach a small-town spot with plenty of attraction

Delray Beach , a 15-square-mile city in Palm Beach County, was awarded the prestigious international Blue Flag designation last year, one of only two in the entire U.S., after meeting 33 stringent environmental, educational, safety and accessibility criteria.

But what visitors will probably be interested in is the vibrant downtown area, huge number of unique restaurants, and, of course, the 7,000 feet of beach with a mile of it blessedly free from looming high-rise condos. Surf, sail, or just hit the water at the beach that "Travel Holiday" magazine named the best public beach in the Southeast for swimming. Or, for some less crowded sand time, head to nearby Atlantic Dunes Park, which features 450 feet of guarded beach.

When the sun goes down or you've just had enough for one day, Delray's Atlantic Avenue is a 20-minute walk from the shore with a staggering assortment of restaurants, bars, art galleries, clothing boutiques and antique stores. A few miles away, Delray Marketplace offers even more. Delray is also convenient to several other excellent beaches and attractions.

3. New Smyrna Beach is Daytona without the crowds, mostly

Daytona Beach is famed for its 26 miles of hard-packed beach and its worldwide tradition of unbridled spring break madness, but if you want a somewhat calmer version just head a bit south to New Smyrna Beach.

Students (and their families) congregate at the beach and hit the charming shops and restaurants on Flagler Avenue for a relaxing week of sand and surf, within easy driving distance of Daytona Beach, Orlando and Cocoa Beach.

However, keep in mind that the city imposed a youth curfew last year to cut down on disruptions, trash and drunk driving so it's likely there'll be one again this year.

4. Key West is still a party town

There's an amazing laid-back party scene year-round in Key West, so why not have your spring break there? The southernmost tip of the continental U.S. is just four miles long by one mile wide so once you get there transportation isn't a problem and live music and great food is never very far away.

Plus Key West may have the most activities to do when you're not actually lying on the beach. Swim, dive down to the coral reefs, fish, take one of the many boat tours or sunset sails, jetski, visit some astounding art galleries, watch the performers at the sunset celebration at Mallory Square, visit Ernest Hemingway's house and pet the descendants of his six-toed cats, eat at some fantastic restaurants, or just cruise Duval Street for colorful nightlife.

If Key West gets too crowded there are wonderful beaches and places to visit on the other Keys, and Key Largo is the diving capital of Florida.

5. Naples is a great family Florida spring break vacation place

Naples in Southwest Florida on the Gulf Coast doesn't get the spring break crowds that nearby Fort Myers does, which may make it more attractive to visitors seeking a more peaceful destination. TripAdvisor calls it a "polished, culture-packed city fringed by blue bays and sugar-sand beaches."

Packed with upscale shopping, parks, art festivals and museums, Naples also boasts nine miles of pristine beaches where you can enjoy the sun, watch for dolphins from Naples Pier (which shoots out 1,000 feet into the Gulf of Mexico) and get extremely fresh seafood at one of the many beachside restaurants .

But really, there are dozens of Florida beachside cities and towns that make great spring break destinations.

Check out the place named best beach town in the nation , or this one Reader's Digest included in their " 15 Best Beaches in Florida Locals Want to Keep Secret " list, or the other beaches TripAdvisor named the best , or the places Florida students go , or the Florida shores that Dr. Beach recommends , or the list of "hottest" spring break beaches .

Florida has 825 miles of sandy beaches. If you want a beach holiday, it's hard to miss here.

Bahama, Jamaica also under travel advisories

The U.S. Department of State issued a travel advisory for Mexico last year, with various levels of travel warnings including a   Level 2 advisory for Cancún for violent crime. Travel advisories have been issued for the Bahamas and Jamaica as well.

The State Dept. has listed 20 locations around the world under Level 3 advisories, meaning visitors should avoid them and reconsider, and 21 Level 4 places they say Americans should not go to at all.

Where do you go for spring break when you already live in Florida?

travel alerts florida

Spring break is almost here, but where do you go when you live in Florida, the site so many other sun-starved students head toward?

Florida is a known destination for students on spring break around the U.S. That's understandable. It's so popular, even many Florida college students stick around instead of heading elsewhere.

Even with recent "cold fronts," Florida's temperatures have already climbed into the upper 70s and low 80s. And there's plenty of sunshine. That doesn't mean they won't drop again.  Low temperatures overnight were expected to drop into the upper 40s to middle 50s across North Florida, low to middle 60s across Central and South Florida and near 70-degrees across the Florida Keys.

Compare that to Thursday morning's 14 in Minneapolis, Minnesota; 32 in New York City; 21 in Chicago. And for students at the University of Alaska in Fairbanks, it was a minus 29.

When is Spring Break 2024 in Florida? Dates differ in schools, colleges, universities. Here are the schedules

What about safety? US Embassy in Mexico issues statement for spring breakers

There are several travel advisories issued for Mexico. Depending on the state, they range from from Level 1 of using normal precautions all the way to Level 4 warning visitors to avoid these areas.

Caution warning for Mexico travel: US issues Mexico 'increased caution' warning for spring break travelers

If Mexico is part of your spring break plans, the U.S. Embassy & Consulates in Mexico issued this statement Feb. 26:

"Each year, thousands of U.S. citizens visit Mexico during spring break. While the vast majority travel safely, visitors should consider the following when planning their vacation or traveling in Mexico":

  • Crime : Crime, including violent crime, can occur anywhere in Mexico, including in popular tourist destinations. See the Mexico Travel Advisory for specific information for each Mexican state. Exercise increased caution in the downtown areas of popular spring break locations including Cancun, Playa Del Carmen, and Tulum, especially after dark.
  • Drugs : Drug possession and use, including medical marijuana, is illegal in Mexico and may result in a lengthy jail sentence. U.S. citizens have become seriously ill or died in Mexico after using synthetic drugs or adulterated prescription pills.
  • Unregulated alcohol: Unregulated alcohol may be contaminated, and U.S. citizens have reported losing consciousness or becoming injured after consuming alcohol that was possibly tainted.
  • Pharmaceuticals : Counterfeit medication is common and may prove to be ineffective, the wrong strength, or contain dangerous ingredients.
  • Sexual assault: U.S. citizens have been victims of rape and sexual assault. Perpetrators may target inebriated or isolated individuals or may employ drugs that alter the victim’s physical or mental state.
  • Drowning : Some beaches have strong undercurrents and rip tides.
  • Medical emergencies: Private hospital prices can be higher than those in the United States. Many facilities require payment (sometimes only in cash) either before providing treatment or before discharging a patient.
  • Guns and ammunition : All guns and even small amounts of ammunition are illegal in Mexico.
  • Arrests : Drunk and disorderly behavior, public urination, and open alcohol containers in vehicles are illegal in Mexico.

Travel advisory remains in effect for Jamaica

The U.S. State Department issued a  Level 3 travel advisory  for Jamaica in January which encourages travelers to reconsider travel to the country.

The travel advisory was issued due to crime and medical services.

"Violent crimes, such as home invasions, armed robberies, sexual assaults, and homicides, are common. Sexual assaults occur frequently, including at all-inclusive resorts," the department said.

The State Department prohibits government personnel from visiting several areas in Jamaica, including Montego Bay, downtown Kingston, and neighborhoods near the popular tourist destination of Ocho Rios.

State Department travel advisories issued for popular cruise destinations Bahamas, Jamaica

T he State Department has updated travel advisories that it previously issued for Jamaica and the Bahamas — two popular destinations for cruises and for spring-break vacations.

Many of the Port Canaveral-based cruise ships have port-of-call stops in the Bahamas, including some at cruise lines' private islands. Some of the longer cruises also stop at ports in Jamaica, an island that is south of Cuba.

Here's what you need to know about the State Department's actions and the reaction to it:

Start the day smarter. Get all the news you need in your inbox each morning.

How serious is the issue?

The State Department , in its updated advisories issued in late-January, kept its advisory levels for both destinations — a Level 3 advisory for Jamaica and a Level 2 advisory for the Bahamas.

What does that mean?

A Level 3 advisory means the State Department recommends that U.S. residents should "reconsider travel" to the location. A Level 2 advisory means residents should "exercise increased caution" when traveling to the destination.

The other levels are Level 4 ("do not travel" to the location) and Level 1 ("exercise normal precautions" when traveling to the location).

So what has changed in the new advisories?

The State Department added more detailed context to the advisories, and that has created buzz within the travel industry and the general public.

What does the State Department say about Jamaica?

"Reconsider travel to Jamaica, due to crime and medical services," the latest advisory said. "Violent crimes — such as home invasions, armed robberies, sexual assaults and homicides — are common. Sexual assaults occur frequently, including at all-inclusive resorts."

What's the problem with Jamaica's medical facilities?

The State Department advisory warned that "emergency services and hospital care vary throughout the island, and response times and quality of care may vary from U.S. standards. Public hospitals are under-resourced, and cannot always provide high-level or specialized care. Private hospitals require payment upfront before admitting patients, and may not have the ability to provide specialized care. Ambulance services are not always readily available, especially in rural areas, and are not always staffed by trained personnel."

What about safety in the Bahamas?

"Exercise increased caution in the Bahamas, due tocrime," the State Department said. "The majority of crime occurs on New Providence (Nassau) and Grand Bahama (Freeport) islands. In Nassau, practice increased vigilance in the 'Over the Hill' area (south of Shirley Street), where gang-on-gang violence has resulted in a high homicide rate, primarily affecting the local population. Violent crime — such as burglaries, armed robberies and sexual assaults — occur in both tourist and non-tourist areas. Be vigilant when staying at short-term vacation rental properties where private security companies do not have a presence."

Are water-based activities an issue in the Bahamas?

The advisory about the Bahamas warns that "activities involving commercial recreational watercraft, including water tours, are not consistently regulated. Watercraft may be poorly maintained, and some operators may not have safety certifications.  Always review and heed local weather and marine alerts before engaging in water-based activities. Commercial watercraft operators have discretion to operate their vessels, regardless of weather forecasts. Injuries and fatalities have occurred."

What specific steps can cruise passengers take?

Miami-based cruise industry expert Stewart Chiron said he does not believe people should have to cancel their cruises.

If they are concerned about a particular port, they can always stay on the ship or remain in a secure area of the port.

That's what Alabama resident Laura Strickland plans to do.

"I am sure the cruise lines makes every effort to protect you, but I'll just stay on the boat at Nassau." Strickland said, as she was preparing to board Royal Caribbean’s Allure of the Seas on Monday at Port Canaveral. The four-night cruise has scheduled stops at Nassau and Perfect Day at CocoCay, Royal Caribbean's private island in the Bahamas.

But other passengers on the Allure of the Seas appeared to be not as concerned.

Cleveland resident Joe Walters said he's not worried about safety issues in the Bahamas, saying: "We have been to Nassau a few times already, and feel safe there. I don't think it's a problem."

"You just need to try to be safe and aware of your surroundings," Connecticut resident Matt Hovan said. "That is really all you can do. Everywhere can be dangerous."

What if passengers want to explore the community?

What's next for iconic tower?: Port Canaveral looking to lease out its now-closed Exploration Tower

Chiron — who has followed the cruise industry for about 35 years and operates the cruiseguy.com website — advises that cruise passengers with concerns should only book excursions that have been vetted by the cruise line, rather than setting out on their own with a random tour operator or taking ground transportation from someone not recommended by the cruise line.

Chiron also noted that the cruise lines' private islands generally are safer than venturing into a city near a cruise port that is not overseen by the cruise line or the port.

"These are not events that are happening on the ship," but rather in the areas outside the port, Chiron noted, in reference the incidents alluded to in the State Department advisories.

What does the cruise industry say about this?

In responding to the State Department advisories Michele Paige, CEO of the Florida-Caribbean Cruise Association, said: "As always, the safety and security of guests, crew and the communities we visit are the top priority for FCCA and our cruise line members. We are aware of the U.S. State Department travel advisory, and have been working closely with global security experts and government authorities — including the U.S. Embassy — to monitor the situation. We and our cruise line members will continue monitoring conditions in all the destinations we visit to make decisions that prioritize safety."

What general advice does the cruise industry give to travelers?

Paige said, as with visiting any destination, travelers should "practice common-sense security measures for their safety and make informed decisions about their travel. We also recommend they pay close attention to updates from their travel adviser or cruise line, including referring to shipboard announcements, no matter the destination."

US issues Jamaica, Bahamas travel advisories, but there are more. Here’s a list of all of them

Making plans for your upcoming summer getaway? Might want to strike Jamaica off your list … and a couple other countries.

A Level 3 travel advisory was issued by the U.S. Department of State with a recommendation to reconsider traveling to the island . A Level 3 advisory asks residents to reconsider travel due to serious risks to safety and security.

This comes after officials issued a  Level 2 travel advisory  for travelers heading to the Bahamas , warning travelers to "exercise increased caution" due to increased crime.

Why is Jamaica under a travel warning?

The travel advisory was issued due to crime and medical services.

"Violent crimes, such as home invasions, armed robberies, sexual assaults, and homicides, are common. Sexual assaults occur frequently, including at all-inclusive resorts," the department said. "Local police often do not respond effectively to serious criminal incidents."

When it comes to medical care, "Emergency services and hospital care vary throughout the island, and response times and quality of care may vary from U.S. standards."

Is there a travel ban to Jamaica?

No. Visitors are encouraged to  reconsider travel.

There are 4 levels of travel warnings. Here's what they mean

  • Level 1: Exercise normal precautions: This is the lowest advisory level for safety and security risk. There is some risk in any international travel.
  • Level 2: Exercise increased caution: Be aware of heightened risks to safety and security.
  • Level 3: Reconsider travel: Avoid travel due to serious risks to safety and security.
  • Level 4: Do not travel: This is the highest advisory level due to greater likelihood of life-threatening risks.

Traveling abroad? Here are some safety tips before you go:

The U.S. State Department recommends that citizens sign up for the department's free  Smart Traveler Enrollment Program , as well as to plan contingency plans in case of emergencies.

As for general safety tips, author Christopher Elliot shared his tips with USA TODAY for travelers before they head out on their vacation:

  • Research your destination carefully . Plan your itinerary to avoid any dangerous places and activities.
  • Ensure all your routine and travel vaccinations are current, especially if you're traveling abroad.
  • Buy adequate  travel insurance  and a medical evacuation membership like  Medjet  or  Global Rescue .
  • Have a plan B in case something goes wrong. Carry a list of emergency contacts and discuss the game plan with your travel companions in the event something goes wrong.

Florida news | our foodie awards winter winners revealed. see who won., florida news, florida news | desantis says spring break hot spots will get extra help from state troopers this year.

travel alerts florida

Spring Breakers looking for a good time will surely find it here in the Sunshine State.

But troublemakers intent on causing chaos and mayhem also will find more cops on patrol and ready to enforce the laws of the land, Gov Ron DeSantis announced Tuesday during a news conference in Miami Beach.

Florida is sending in 140 state troopers to assist 17 cities across the state that have requested help keeping order during Spring Break, including Fort Lauderdale, Hollywood and Miami Beach, Daytona Beach and Panama City Beach, DeSantis told reporters.

“If you’re coming here and you’re committing crimes and causing havoc, you are going to pay the price,” DeSantis said. “We will hold you accountable. That’s what we do here. That is not going to fly in the Sunshine State.”

In addition, the Florida Highway Patrol is providing 24 “Quick Response” troopers in Broward, Dade, Volusia and Bay counties to immediately respond to incidents requiring additional law enforcement personnel.

The news was a surprise to Fort Lauderdale Mayor Dean Trantalis.

“Things are fun and quiet here in Fort Lauderdale,” Trantalis said Tuesday. “We don’t want to create an environment like a combat zone. This is a free and open beach for everyone to enjoy. I have complete faith in our first responders to handle anything, but I appreciate the state’s offer to help in case of an emergency.”

Fort Lauderdale City Manager Greg Chavarria says the state offered assistance to all coastal communities.

The Fort Lauderdale Police Department accepted the offer. State troopers will be assisting with traffic management near A1A and Seabreeze Boulevard, a notoriously busy area.

Trantalis made note of the message being put out by Miami Beach that it’s “breaking up” with Spring Break after enduring a climate of chaos over the past few years. But he’s not sure the message is having the intended effect.

“Miami Beach is putting out messaging that they are a place for bad boys,” Trantalis said. “That’s like catnip, drawing them there. You think Miami Beach is closed? The place is packed.”

In recent years, Miami Beach has become ground zero for spring break mayhem.

There was trouble in 2021, when officers made more than 1,000 arrests. In 2022, five people were injured in two separate shootings on Ocean Drive, generating headlines across the globe. Last year, police responded to two shootings on Ocean Drive that left two people dead. The number of arrests: Nearly 500.

Each year, Miami Beach has declared a state of emergency in response to the overwhelming crowds and sometimes deadly gun violence. Curfews were imposed and causeways closed in an attempt to calm the chaos on the streets.

This year, state troopers will be on hand at the start to help with traffic flow and any other issues that arise, DeSantis said.

“We’re a law and order state,” he said. “Florida is a very welcoming state. We welcome people to come and have a good time. What we don’t welcome is criminal activity.”

More than 60 state troopers are being sent to South Florida alone, DeSantis said. Another 60 are heading to Spring Break hot spots such as Daytona Beach and Panama City Beach.

The Florida Highway Patrol and local police will be relying on mobile license plate readers to track down people with outstanding warrants and stolen vehicles, DeSantis said.

Visitors to Miami Beach will also find DUI checkpoints, curfews, bag checks and early beach closures.

Uniformed officers will be patrolling in vehicles, ATVs, bicycles, on foot and along the waterways, DeSantis said.

“The state’s got a lot going on,” the governor said. “It’s a fun place to be. We want to see people (have fun). But we are also going to insist that people respect the law, that order is kept in the streets. We want to keep people safe.”

Haitian Americans are stuck in Haiti as gangs attack

By Tania Francois

Updated on: March 4, 2024 / 8:24 PM EST / CBS Miami

MIAMI — Haiti is under attack by local gangs who are ravishing the small nation's capital and surrounding cities. They tried taking over Toussaint Louverture International Airport in Haiti in what officials are calling the largest.

The U.S. State Department has issued multiple travel warnings asking Americans and State Department employees to stay put and be careful while on the island.

At Miami and Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airports, all flights in and out of Haiti's two airports are canceled. Despite many warnings, countless Haitian Americans are still on the island. For them, Haiti is home and leaving is complicated.

The sister of CBS News Miami's Tania Francois is one of those people. We are not using her name for her protection.

"I've been stuck in my city where I'm living now for about two months," she said. "Trying to make it into Port Au Prince so I can fly to the States, and I just can't leave."

She now calls Haiti home. She's adopted a son and also runs an orphanage but like many Haitian Americans, the violence and unrest have stopped her from being able to travel. Since February, she's been trying to get to a doctor's appointment here in South Florida.

"I was supposed to leave again for Port Au Prince tomorrow, but the airports have been closed," she added. "Sunrise, which flies in through Port Au Prince into the United States, JetBlue, American Airlines, Spirit — they've all canceled flights."

Kareen Ulysse operates Centre Hospitalier de Fontaine. She too is a Haitian American working in Haiti. The hospital, which is also an orphanage, is in Cite Soleil a suburb of Port au Prince.

"We work literally in the ghettos for the most vulnerable people and there's no help, there's no one really standing in line to help people like them," she said.

She's in the heart of where some of the worst gang violence is currently happening. Ulysse moved back to take over for her father.

"The mothers can't get jobs. So they're in my care. So that's how I ended up with 17 little ones," she said. "And right now and sometimes people give birth at the hospital, they don't come back for them. So I take them home and the orphanage is in my house."

This is also why Ulysse can't leave. She says despite hearing gunfire from just yards away from her door steps she says the work she's doing is far greater.

"I'm here to see this through. My will to fight for good is, has to be just as strong, if not stronger than their will to destroy. So I'm here for the long run," she said. "This is home. I don't have a plan B so this, I left everything in the States and I'm here."

Cancelled flights mean the help that usually flows into Haiti is halted making the situation there more dire. For more information on the work that Kareen Ulysse is doing, you can go to www.chffoundation.com .

U.S. issues spring break travel warning

The U.S. Embassy and Consulates in Mexico has issued a  spring break  travel warning for Americans planning to visit the country. The message posted on Monday highlighted a range of potential  safety threats  in the popular destination, like crime.

“U.S. citizens should exercise increased caution in the downtown areas of popular spring break locations including Cancun, Playa del Carmen, and Tulum, especially after dark,”  the advisory  said, though it noted that crime can occur anywhere in Mexico. The U.S. State Department's  travel advisory  for the country notes various warning levels for different states, ranging from Level 1 (“exercise normal precautions") through 4 (“do not travel”).

The message also warned of other potential hazards like unregulated alcohol and pharmaceuticals. “Unregulated alcohol may be contaminated, and U.S. citizens have reported losing consciousness or becoming injured after consuming alcohol that was possibly tainted,” the advisory said.

The U.S. Embassy and Consulates noted that counterfeit medication is “common” and could be ineffective or an incorrect strength. Those products may also have dangerous ingredients.

The advisory warned of drowning and high private hospital prices, as well, among other risks. The message urged travelers to take precautions like keeping an eye on their drinks; staying with a group of friends in bars and clubs, while walking in dark areas or in taxis at night; and letting family and friends know about their travel plans.

Despite the warning, however, it noted that “the vast majority” of U.S. citizens visiting Mexico at spring break each year do so safely.
