About Lombok

ACCOMMODATIONS – HOTELS – GUEST HOUSES – TOURS – INFORMATION

Lombok is an Indonesian island located in the West Nusa Tenggara province. It is known for its stunning beaches, lush landscapes, and vibrant culture. The island is home to several ethnic groups, with the Sasak people being the largest and most prominent group.

The Sasak people are the indigenous inhabitants of Lombok and have their own unique culture, traditions, and language. Their culture is a blend of indigenous beliefs, Islam (the dominant religion on the island), and influences from neighboring cultures such as Bali and Java.

One of the most significant aspects of Sasak culture is the traditional architecture. The Sasak people are known for their distinctive Sasak-style houses, called “Bale Sasak.” These houses are typically made of bamboo, wood, and thatched roofs. They are designed to withstand the tropical climate and are often elevated off the ground to prevent flooding.

Another important cultural element is the traditional Sasak music and dance. The Sasak people have their own traditional musical instruments, such as the “gambus” (a lute-like string instrument), “gandrung” (a two-stringed fiddle), and “selonding” (a bronze percussion instrument). These instruments are often played during cultural events and celebrations, accompanied by traditional dances like the “Peresean” (stick-fighting dance) and the “Gendang Beleq” (a lively drum dance).

The Sasak people also have a rich tradition of handwoven textiles known as “tenun.” The tenun fabric is made using traditional methods, and each design and pattern holds cultural significance. Sasak women are skilled weavers, and their woven fabrics are highly valued for their intricate designs and vibrant colors.

Religion plays a significant role in Sasak culture, with the majority of Sasak people adhering to Islam. However, there are still elements of pre-Islamic beliefs and rituals that are practiced alongside the Islamic traditions. Sasak people also celebrate various cultural festivals and ceremonies throughout the year, which often involve communal feasts, traditional music, and dance performances.

Tourism has played a significant role in promoting and preserving Sasak culture on the island of Lombok. Many visitors to Lombok have the opportunity to witness and experience traditional Sasak culture through cultural performances, handicraft workshops, and visits to traditional villages.

Overall, the Sasak culture of Lombok is a vibrant and integral part of the island’s identity. Its rich traditions, distinct architecture, music, dance, and handicrafts contribute to the cultural diversity and allure of Lombok as a tourist destination.

Culture Clash: Sasak Sade Traditional Village in Lombok, Indonesia

sasak tour & travel

 Tripsavvy / Mike Aquino

Whack ! The bamboo baton hits the pepadu 's buffalo-hide shield hard, and we feel the blow reverberate in the air, almost as if we'd taken a hit ourselves. As the crowd inches closer to get a better view of the peresean fight, the flurry of blows between the dueling pepadu feels like the batons are whizzing only inches away from us.

Thwack! One of the pepadu reels back, thrown off balance by the opposing pepadu 's blow. The pakembar , or referee, immediately calls an end to the fight, before blood can be drawn.

Generations ago, drawing blood was the whole point of a peresean duel. The Sasak communities of the Indonesian island of Lombok used to stage such fights just before they planted rice in their paddies, believing that the more bloodshed during a duel, the heavier the rain was going to be that planting season.

The tamer peresean we're witnessing right now occurs almost every day, whenever tourist buses disgorge their riders into the Sasak Sade Traditional Village in east Lombok.

A visit to Sasak Sade is a crash course in the Sasak culture native to the island, where villagers gleefully put their music, comedy, combat, and crafts up for show. Only a little of it is sanitized for an international audience; into every entertaining morning meeting the Sasak, a little culture shock must fall! For our visit to Sasak Sade in full motion, view this  Youtube video .

Let Loose the Drums of War: Sasak Gendang Beleq

The Sasak living in Sade put on a rousing show for every tourist bus that comes by, starting with a rousing performance by a traditional musical troupe, led by a gendang beleq (big drum) .

The gendang beleq leads the rhythm, while the accompanying gongs provide the melody. The resulting music is an energetic, repetitive racket, perhaps hearkening back to the gendang beleq 's original purpose as a war instrument. Back in the day, generals would lead their troops with a gendang beleq , to rouse the fighting spirits of their men before battle.

Send in the Clown: Tari Amaq Tempengus Dance

The troupe provides the musical accompaniment to several acts put on by Sade's menfolk. After the peresean duel, a lighter act takes center stage: Tari Amaq Tempengus , a court jester's dance that used to be performed for tired soldiers returning from battle.

Amaq Tempengus' movements recall a stylized Sasak Charlie Chaplin's: flicking his sarong for comical effect, Amaq Tempengus prances around the small town square, his garish makeup accentuating his bucktoothed smile and flashing eyes. Gamely posing for the camera, Amaq Tempengus flits from one viewer to another, playing the fool and the clown, in turn, all to the beat of the gendang beleq troupe.

It's a convincing act – after the show is done, adoring fans surround Amaq Tempengus for selfies, but the man behind the makeup seems much shyer in real life, only agreeing with some reluctance.

Making the Cut: Tari Petuk Dance

Even Sasak kids get their time in the spotlight: the Tari Petuk dance, performed by two boys no older than ten years of age, takes over the town square, gyrating as the gendang beleq hits a crescendo.

The moustaches painted on the boys' faces feel almost like an inside joke, given the context of the dance: the tari petuk is traditionally performed as part of the Sasak circumcision ceremony, a rite of passage to manhood. Newly-circumcised boys watch the tari petuk to take the edge off the pain of having part of their penises trimmed off.

The Village People: Exploring the Rest of Sasak Sade

After the show, visitors are encouraged to walk in the Sasak Sade Village, accompanied by a local guide.

Sade contains 150 houses built in the traditional Sasak style, with wooden pillars, woven-bamboo walls and thatched roofs crafted from alang-alang grass. About 700 Sasak live in Sade, all of them working together to keep the cultural flame alive.

The old ways live on in Sade, such as the use of coconut-oil lamps; the lumbung (rice granaries) that tower over the houses; and the persistence of weaving as a life skill for Sasak women.

The Sasak in Lombok number about four million, making up over eighty percent of the people living on the island. Thanks to villages like Sade, the Sasak way of life continues to thrive, despite colonization by the Balinese and the Dutch, and the onslaught of modernity that's made short work of other traditional communities throughout  Indonesia.

Strange Sasak Traditions on Display

Fifteen generations of Sasak have lived in Sade for centuries; old habits die hard. Take the custom of swabbing Sasak floors with buffalo poop, as we found this Sasak housewife doing. Sasak houses have clay floors, which are ostensibly replenished by regular swabbings with diluted cow dung.

The older generation believes that this custom wards off mosquitoes and evil influences. The newer generation was not available for comment, and at least one of my fellow visitors – spotting this amiable matron covering her own floor with handfuls of earthy-smelling greenish feces – ran from the scene gagging.

Sasak Women Doing the Weaving

Sasak society has a strict division of labor between sexes. The men concern themselves with activities outside the home, while Sasak women fuss about with the kitchen, children, and the weaving loom. In Sade village, this manifests in the men taking on all the performance work, with the women weaving traditional cloth and selling them to visitors.

Traditional looms demonstrate the weaving process for visitors. Sasak weaving is a time-intensive process, from dyeing the cotton with natural colors (betel nut and ginger make orange; indigo makes blue) to weaving the threads by hand. Sasak women spend two months making a single bolt of cloth, and about six weeks to make a lesser quality product.

Ikat and Songket Cloth Bargains on Every Corner

The footpaths beyond Sade's town square feel like a traditional market, with several homes having been converted into storefronts for Sasak fabrics like ikat (a colorful rainbow cloth using traditional patterns) and songket (cloth with gold and silver threads woven throughout). The ladies also sell products made from their cloth, including bags, hats, sashes and table runners.

This writer managed to get a broad two-meter bolt of ikat for about IDR 500,000 (about US$37) and a smaller bolt of songket for about IDR 300,000 (about US$22).

Transportation to Sasak Sade Village

To visit Sasak Sade Traditional Village, you can take a hired car from the Lombok capital of Mataram down to Pujut District, an hour and a half ride that takes you past Mataram's towering mosques and Lombok's scenic rice paddies. See the location of Sasak Sade Traditional Village (Google Maps).

You won't be able to enter without getting a paid guide, which will cost you about IDR 50,000 (about US$3.75). Solo tours to Sasak Sade Village are not encouraged; the show and tour attracts large groups of visitors, of which this guide was a part (thank you, Indonesia Tourism and #TripofWonders). We suggest you ask your hotel in Mataram to hook you up with a tour package visiting Sasak Sade, instead of arranging one on your own.

Biden kicks off post-State of the Union travel blitz in Pennsylvania

President Joe Biden kicked off a travel blitz Friday after his State of the Union address , heading to the critical swing state of Pennsylvania to drive home some of the key points he delivered during Thursday's address.

The president's speech in a solidly Democratic county almost immediately attacked former President Donald Trump. Biden criticized his record on reproductive rights issues and invoked a family impacted by Alabama's controversial state Supreme Court ruling that embryos are considered children, which prompted in vitro fertilization providers to halt services.

"Do you know why it happened? I'll tell you why. One reason: Donald Trump," Biden said Friday of that family's paused IVF plans. "He came to office determined to overturn Roe v. Wade. In fact, he's bragged about it repeatedly."

The president then pivoted to issues including cooling inflation , lowering prescription drug prices and his demand to ban assault weapons .

"Too many corporations raise their prices and pad their profits, charging you more and more for less and less," Biden said. "That's why we're cracking down on corporations engaged in price gouging and deceptive pricing."

Biden also drew a contrast between his governing philosophy and Trump's.

"My lifetime has taught me to embrace the future. I mean it sincerely: freedom, democracy, [and a] future based on the core values that have defined America," Biden said. "Honesty, decency, fairness, equality."

"Donald Trump sees the story differently," Biden added. "He sees a story of resentment, revenge, retribution."

President Joe Biden, right, is escorted by Air Force Cpt. Eric Anderson, 89th Airlift Wing Flightline protocol officer, as first lady Jill Biden, left, talks to Col. Angela Ochoa, commander of the 89th Airlift Wing,

The audience included people who have volunteered or worked for the Democratic Party, the Biden campaign or a similar organization. The high-energy crowd occasionally broke into chants of “four more years.”

Before the president's speech, first lady Jill Biden delivered a forceful rebuke of her husband's predecessor: "Donald Trump insults our veterans and disparages those who died in war, calling them 'losers' and 'suckers.' How dare he?"

"We must meet this moment as if our rights are at stake, because they are," the first lady said. "As if our democracy is on the line, because it is."

Aside from the State of the Union, Friday's speech saw the largest audience for Biden since a January speech centered around abortion rights, which was interrupted more than a dozen times by anti-war protesters criticizing Biden's response to the Israel-Hamas war.

The president's speech kicks off what the campaign is calling a "month of action," during which Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris will visit every battleground state.

Biden will visit Georgia on Saturday, New Hampshire on Monday, Wisconsin on Wednesday and Michigan on Thursday, according to the campaign. Meanwhile, Harris visited Arizona on Friday and will travel to Nevada on Saturday, zeroed in on mobilizing Latino voters.

Of those states, Biden flipped Georgia, Wisconsin, Michigan and Arizona blue in 2020.

The president's Cabinet and senior administration officials are also fanning across the country this month, with more than two dozen trips to states including Texas, Ohio, Florida and New York, according to the White House.

The campaign announced on Friday that "Team Biden-Harris" will open 100 offices and onboard at least 350 new staffers in battleground states and is launching a six-week, $30 million ad buy that will "intentional and sizable buys into Hispanic, African American, and AANHPI outlets and radio," according to the campaign. The campaign often uses "Team Biden-Harris" as a shorthand to refer to itself and affiliated groups, such as the Democratic National Committee.

The $30 million ad buy is in a similar range as certain super PAC ad spending this campaign cycle . The pro-Biden super PAC Future Forward has spent about $20.8 million, the pro-Trump super PAC MAGA Inc. has spent $39.5 million, the pro-Ron DeSantis super PAC Never Back Down spent about $40.2 million, and the pro-Nikki Haley super PAC SFA Fund spent $64.4 million, according to AdImpact.

Putin Visit Sparks Major Shutdown in Russian City

Internet access and mobile communications were limited in southern Russia as President Vladimir Putin toured the city of Krasnodar, according to a Russian media report.

Residents of the city "were warned about the shutdown of all types of communications in part of the city due to Putin's arrival," independent outlet 7x7 reported on Thursday. Several highways were closed, it said.

Residents in one part of the city were asked to use elevators less often on Thursday, as emergency services wouldn't be contactable with the communication blackout and road use would be limited, Russian state outlet Kommersant reported on Wednesday.

Putin arrived in the Krasnodar area on Thursday. The region connects to the annexed Crimean peninsula, which Russia has controlled since 2014 and used to launch attacks on Ukraine.

Putin in Krasnodar

Russian independent journalist Farida Rustamova highlighted a similar situation from last year. She said in early February 2023 that mobile internet access was cut off in the Russian city of Volgograd ahead of Putin's arrival.

Authorities in the Russian Black Sea city of Sochi, also in the Krasnodar region, reported "temporary interruptions" to mobile internet connection in parts of the city during another visit from the Russian leader in June 2023. That trip coincided with the arrival of foreign delegates to Sochi, including Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko , who met with Putin in the city.

On the day of Putin's visit to Russian Krasnodar, mobile networks and Internet have been turned off in the city. Residents were told not to use elevators. Days later, Russian authorities organizing an economic forum in the Russian city of St. Petersburg said attendees of the conference wouldn't be able to use mobile internet during Putin's speech at the event. "There will be a temporary lack of Internet access from mobile devices," organizers said in a statement, adding that attendees would need to use a wireless connection supplied by the event.

Putin visited the Higher Military Aviation School, based in Krasnodar, on Thursday, meeting with a group of female pilots based out of the center.

The Russian leader tested out a flight simulator at the military school, praising the country's air force for its execution of "serious tasks on the battlefield," Russian state news agency RIA Novosti reported. Russia has suffered double-digit aircraft losses in just a few weeks at Ukraine's hands, according to statistics from Kyiv's military.

Putin also toured a new sports training facility for martial arts, Veniamin Kondratyev, the governor of the Krasnodar region, said in a post to Telegram on Thursday.

A new destination in a galaxy far, far away will be added to the mission of the Starspeeder 1000 when the Star Tours attraction at Disneyland is updated just in time for the annual Star Wars festival that now stretches to two months.

Former Jedi Knight and rebel spy Ahsoka Tano, Alliance intelligence officer Cassian Andor, Mandalorian bounty hunter Din Djarin and “Baby Yoda” Grogu will become part of the Star Tours attractions on April 5 at Disneyland, Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Florida and Disneyland Paris in France.

The updates to Disneyland’s Star Tours attraction headline the Season of the Force event returning to the Anaheim theme park on April 5 through June 2.

Star Wars characters currently show up in Star Tours in a few key ways.

Glimpses or hints of a few characters can be seen during the planetary excursions — including Chewbacca and Jar Jar Binks.

One of seven Star Wars heroes — Princess Leia, Yoda, Lando Calrissian, Poe Dameron, Admiral Ackbar, Maz Kanata or BB-8 — interrupts the journey via a hologram transmission, according to Touring Plans.

Ahsoka, Cassian, The Mandalorian or Grogu could appear as one of the hologram transmissions in Star Tours without joining the Starspeeder crew during an excursion to a previously unvisited Star Wars planet.

CORRECTION: An earlier version of this story incorrectly reported Star Tours would be traveling to three new destinations in the Star Wars galaxy. The Star Tours attraction will add one new destination.

Trevor Bauer will pitch vs. Dodgers minor leaguers on pay-to-play travel team

sasak tour & travel

A year after being released by the Dodgers, Trevor Bauer is scheduled to pitch Sunday against minor-leaguers from the Los Angeles organization, playing for a traveling club from Japan.

Bauer will pitch for the Asian Breeze, a team that plays scrimmages against squads of minor-leaguers. The game will take place on the back fields at Camelback Ranch, the Dodgers' spring training home.

“Trevor Bauer will be making his Asian Breeze debut on March 10th against the Los Angeles Dodgers Organization,” the club said in a release  on its website Thursday.

Asian Breeze charges players about $2,500 to join a 20-day tour.

The Los Angeles Times reports that the Dodgers were surprised by the news that he would be on the team but don't plan to interfere with Bauer's planned participation.

All things Dodgers: Latest Los Angeles Dodgers news, schedule, roster, stats, injury updates and more.

Bauer was released by the Dodgers in January 2023 following the completion of his suspension for violating MLB’s domestic violence and sexual assault policy .

He had been placed on administrative leave before being suspended for 324 games. Bauer appealed the suspension, leading to a hearing  before a private arbitrator  who  reduced it to 194 games , still the largest ever under the league’s domestic violence policy.

No MLB team was interested in signing Bauer, who went to Japan to pitch for the Yokohama Baystars. He posted a 11-4 record and 2.59 ERA in 24 appearances overseas.

In recent months, Bauer has gone on something of a publicity tour to express his desire to return to the majors.
