Travel Planning: Yogyakarta to Bromo Made Simple

' src=

The Yogyakarta to Bromo tour is a popular option for tourists travelling through Java. It’s easy to understand why. Bromo National Park is famous for its amazing views. It’s really a photographers dream destination and getting there can be half the fun. So to help you plan your trip from Yogyakarta to Bromo I created this short guide. Whether you want to fly, take a train or go on a mega road trip, I’ve got you covered. Let’s get started.

General Information

Mount Bromo is located close to the cities of Malang and Surabaya. The easiest way to go from Yogyakarta to Mount Bromo is via Surabaya. Bromo is located between 4 regencies: Probolinggo Regency, Pasuruan Regency, Lumajang Regency, and Malang Regency. Surabaya is further away, but it has more options of ways to travel. Malang is a bit tricky to get to, but it’s closer to Bromo and arguably a nicer place to visit. The map below should help you with the geography of East Java.

Map of Central and East Java. Red lines are main roads and black and white striped lines are rail tracks.

Yogyakarta to Surabaya Flights

There are direct flights between Yogyakarta and Surabaya. The route between Yogya and Surabaya is flown by several airlines, such as Garuda Indonesia  (the national carrier), Wings Air and Sriwijaya Air . If you have the money I’d recommend Garuda, followed by Lion Air then Sriwijaya Air.

Flying is easily the quickest way to get from Yogyakarta to Surabaya. The flight takes just one hour and five minutes. One thing to keep in mind if you decide to fly is that Surabaya Airport is located far out of the city. It will take you at least 30-45 minutes to reach Surabaya (city) from the airport. If you want to go direct to Bromo on your first night in the city, then I’d recommend arranging a car rental and a driver to meet you at the airport.

Yogyakarta to Surabaya & Malang by Train

It’s easy to take the train from Yogyakarta to Mt Bromo. There is a regular train service to Surabaya, Probolinggo and Malang. Trains depart from Tugu Train Station, which is located in the center of Yogyakarta near Jalan Malioboro. The Yogyakarta to Surabaya train journey takes between four to five hours.  Ticket prices start at around Rp155,000 for a return ticket.

Malang is further away from Yogyakarta than Surabaya. While it does have an international airport there are no direct flights from Yogya to Malang. If you want to visit Malang from Yogyakarta the most convenient way to get there is by train. Some trains that go to Malang pass Surabaya, but not all of them. Trains to Malang from Yogyakarta depart from Tugu Train Station.

The final option is Probolinggo, which is the closest train station to Bromo. This is the most convenient option if you want to to go directly to a hotel near Bromo. However, there are only two trains per day to Probolinggo (No anymore! You have 5 schedules per day to choose from. And also it has several class option: Economy, Business and Executive). Remember, some of the trains from Yogyakarta to Probolinggo departs from Lempuyangan train station in Yogyakarta, not Tugu train station.

Below is the timetable for Yogyakarta to Surabaya by train, Yogyakarta to Malang by train and Yogyakarta to Probolinggo by train. You can visit the official Indonesia Rail Company website  to book your train ticket online. Make sure to book your ticket early and be at the train station 30 minutes before your departure time (well… I usually arrive at the train station 15 minutes before, but I always print my ticket first, for example, one day before departure). I recommend booking your ticket through Tiket.com or Traveloka.com .

Train Schedule – Yogyakarta to Surabaya

Train schedule – yogyakarta to malang, train schedule – yogyakarta to probollinggo, yogyakarta to bromo car rental.

A road trip through Java is a real adventure. The best route to take if you plan to drive from Yogyakarta to Bromo is to go to Malang. The first part of the journey from Yogyakarta through to Solo is along a busy main road and there is not much to see on the way. However, once you get past Solo the trip becomes a lot more interesting and the countryside can be really spectacular. The area around Tawangmangu is one of the highlights of the trip. The area is in the highlands. The hills are covered with deciduous forest and the farmland is rich and fertile (you can buy fresh strawberries from the roadside stalls, which make for a tasty and healthy snack).

If you drive from Yogyakarta to Malang you will pass Tawangmangu. The area is fertile and farmers’ fields carve up the countryside.

It takes about 10 hours to drive from Yogyakarta to Malang. Most tourists will stay overnight at a hotel in Malang and then leave very early in the morning to go to Mt Bromo for sunrise . This is a nice option; not only do you get a private driver who will take you where you want to go, it’s also a great way to see the countryside of Java. However, be warned: all this driving is tiring.

While it is possible to drive from Yogyakarta to Surabaya and then to Bromo the route doesn’t really make much sense. Not only is it a longer drive, but there’s less to see on the way.

Final Thoughts

There’s no ‘best way’ to go from Yogyakarta to Bromo. If you’re on a tight itinerary I’d recommend flying from Yogyakarta to Surabaya and then arranging a car rental to take you to Bromo the next morning. If you have the time, however, a road trip through Java is a great experience. Whatever option you decide to choose in the end, I hope this article helped you with your travel arrangements.

Have you followed the backpacking trail from Yogyakarta to Bromo? How did you make the journey? What form of transport would you recommend?

Still need to book your hotel for Yogyakarta? Save yourself some time! Here’s a list of the best hotels near Malioboro for every budget.

Hi Firsta … Thanks for your blogs/ guides. I’ll be coming from Yogya this coming June 20 and I’m going to Mount Bromo on a day trip. I’d like to ask if what will I do upon reaching Probolinggo? What’s the next ride? I’d like to see the sunrise in Mount Bromo. How much will it cost me? Also upon reading different blogs, all of them suggests that tourists should go to Surabaya first by train then bus from Surabaya to Probolinggo. I am a bit confused now. Which route will I take to Bromo – via Surabaya or the direct train to Probolinngo? Thanks..hope to hear from u soon.

' src=

You can take a train directly to Probolinggo from Yogyakarta, and it is closer from Probolinggo to Bromo rather than from Surabaya to Bromo. Surabaya to Probolinggo is 2-3 hours journey. To learn more about it, please check this: http://discoveryourindonesia.com/yogyakarta-bromo/ . Hope it helps.

Hi, thanks for this amazing informative article, I’m going to be doing the opposite route (Mt Bromo to Yongjakarta) in a few days. Do you recommend spending one night in Yongjakarta or should I go directly to Borobodur? Thanks!

Hi Raphael. Thanks for the kind words. I’d definitely recommend staying in Yogyakarta for one day so you can visit Borobudur and Prambanan temples.

Hello! This has been really useful as I’m really struggling to plot the journey out. We’re coming from Yogyakarta to Mt Bromo on the way to Bali (haven’t worked out areas yet) to Lombok, Gilis and back to Bali before heading back to London.

If we fly to Surabaya which seems the quickest route, do you have accommodation recommendations as I can’t find anywhere that offers trips or reviews the hotel helping. I then need to get us to Bali from there and work out the best route, so any help and info again really appreciated.

Thank you so much for your help. Rosie x

Hi Rosie. I would recommend flying. For hotels in Surabaya you can check this post .

This was really helpful. I wanted to go to Ijen further from Mt Bromo. How do you suggest I do that? Thanks in advance.

Hi Surabhi,

What suggestion do you need? You probably can find a taxi / motorbike taxi from Probolinggo train station to Cemoro Kandang area (Bromo)/ your hotel in Bromo.

Hello! Can I check if it is possible to rent a bike from Yogyakarta for a week and ride to Bromo via the below 2 paths? 1) Yogy –> Solo –> Batu –> Malang –> Jemplang –> Cemoro Lawang 2) Cemoro Lawang –> Jemplang –> Malang –> Pacitan –> Yogy

Was thinking of doing one route each direction. I was thinking of doing doing each direction within 10-12 hrs, or do you recommend a stop in between? And also will the route from Jemplang to Cemoro Lawang be difficult for a motorbike to go through due to the sandy path? Really appreciate your advice, thank you!

Hi Yang, I am not sure if it is possible/not to use the motorbike (that you rent in Yogya) to go all the way to Bromo. I did a road trip with my husband on a motorbike. We stop in Malang (stay overnight) and continue from there to Bromo on the next day. We didn’t go through Jemplang. We go through Probolinggo (before Probolinggo you turn right after Tongas Asri Restaurant). We stay in Lava View Lodge and hire a jeep. It is difficult for a motorbike to go through the Bromo area. It is ok with a trail bike.

Probillinggo, also i am thinking of skipping the Sunrise to Bromo as the weather here has been very cloudy i had the same problem when i did the Sunrise to Borobudur the weather was very cloudy foggy very dissappointing ,my plan B was to trek to the Viewpoint around 5.

Hi Adam, sounds as a great plan, especially if you stay in Lava View Lodge. The view from in front of the lodge is equally amazing (with the view point).

Im going to Probolinggo from Yogya next week. Im still struggling to find the best train to Probolinggo.

Whether to take Ranggajati and depart from Tugu Station Yogya (business class and more expensive) or to take Sri Tanjung and depart from Lempuyangan Station Yogya (way lot cheaper).

I have searched for the seats in Sri Jati and it seems less comfortable for a 10-hour journey.

If i take Ranggajati i will arrive around 6.15 pm. is it easy for me to find transport to cemoro lawang that evening? i have booked a hotel at cemoro.

tks for your advise

I would personally choose Business/Executive class rather than the Economy class, just because the comfort and also the travel time, but if you are tight of budget, the economy class is fine too. I never travel from Probolinggo train station to Cemoro Lawang at night, but I guess it should be a popular thing to do. The journey from the train station to Cemoro Lawang area is around 1,5-2 hours. I guess you can find a travel/mini bus, unfortunately I don’t have any idea how much does it cost. I have heard sometimes you have to wait for a while until the mini bus full with passengers. I would recommend to do search more about it (how to do it the best way). All the best for your travels.

hi there i want to ask is it possible for me to do a one day trip to bromo ? is it enough ? because i am planning to go to yogya first then to bromo for a day.

Do you mean a day trip to Bromo from Yogyakarta? It is not possible. At least you have to stay for a night. You can also arrange a flight from Yogyakarta to Surabaya, get pick up at the airport at around 10 pm and do the Bromo sunrise on the next day. Back to Surabaya again to fly out on the same day. That is possible but the arrangement is going to be expensive especially if you are a single traveller. Hope this helps.

wanna ask Surabaya to probolinggo via train go and return, train ticket need buy in advance? or I can just buy it on spot?

thank you for the advice in advance.

It is better to get the tickets in advanced as they are limited. Hope you have a great time in Indonesia.

Dear Firsta,

Do you think it is possible to travel in one day from Borobudur to Bromo? I mean, taking a taxi from Borobudur to Yogya, then a train from Yogya to Probolinggo and lastly a taxi from Probolinggo to Cemoro Lawang?

I would be arriving in Probolinggo at 17.30.

Also, how long in advance would you recommend I book train tickets, and can I book them in Jakarta? And are the train schedules reliable?

Thank you for your wonderful blog!

Hi Christel, I have sent an email to you. Hope you received it ok.

Hi Firsta! I’m thinking on visiting Bromo from Yogya. I’ll finish my visit in Yogya on Thursday evening after 4p.m) and my next stop is Mt Bromo. What do you think is my best option to get there. Should I sleep that day in Yogya and start my journey to Bromo? Or maybe there is a train to Probolinggo in the night? Or should I make a night in Surabaya and in the next morning go to Bromo??

Finally after visiting Bromo I wanna get Ketapang to take the ferry to Bali. How can I do that? What do you think is my best option? Thank you!

Hi Fer, Have you checked the train ticket booking site? As I know there are no late train from Yogyakarta to Probolinggo. If you want to go to Probolinggo, I would recommend to stay one night in Yogya and get the train on the next day. You have to get a bus from Bromo to Banyuwangi, or a train from Surabaya/Probolinggo to Bayuwangi Baru station. All the best for your trip!

Hello Firsta,

Firts of all kudos on your great travel blog and for sharing your valuable experience 🙂

I have the idea of renting a car in Yogyakarta to drive to Malang or Probolinggo, and do the Bromo Mountain tour the next day. I have unfortunately not found any car rental that allows to rent a car in Yogja and leave it in Probolinggo, or continue to Banyuwangi and leave it there. My final destination is Bali, so I would not return to Yogja to return the car. I wanted to know if maybe you know of a car rental that allows to pick up a car in one place and drop it off in a different place?

I also have a question regarding something mentioned above by Adam. Is there a special time during the year that is better to see the beautiful morning views of mount Bromo, and when the clouds lift easier around the caldera?

Hi Camilo, I never heard of a car rental company who can do things like that. Get the car in Yogya and drop off the car in Banyuwangi. As for Bromo, it’s really tricky. During the dry season is the best time to go, but if you come during the rainy season, sometime the morning is so beautiful and crisp! If you are lucky and it’s not raining during your visit.

Hello Firsta, Me and four of my friends are coming to Java in early March and are hoping to visit Borbodur, Mt Bromo and the Ijen Crater. We are on a rather tight budget. We are planning on having 5 days in Java, we will be based in Yoyojarta to begin with as we fly to the airport. What would you suggest is the best way to split up our days knowing the 3 main places we want to see. We will be moving into Bali after this. So want to finish our time in java by getting the ferry from Banyuwangi.

Dear Bee, I’ll get in touch through email. Speak to you soon.

MT. BROMO TRAVEL GUIDE (ITINERARY + BUDGET)

by thepinay solobackpacker | Jan 12, 2019 | Bromo , Indonesia , Itinerary , Travel Guide | 0 comments

Here’s a detailed Bromo itinerary and budget. I also created a DIY Bromo Travel Guide and how to do the Bromo sunrise tour from Cemoro Lawang or Surabaya.

Rugged peaks of the Tennger mountains pierce the morning mist in Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park. The view here during sunrise is mesmeric, as the whispering lava sand and the nearby massif are draped by fog. This popular volcanic complex in East Java is composed of the jaw-dropping Mt.Batok, Mt.Bromo, Mt.Semeru, Mt. Widodaren, and the Tengger Caldera. It is one of the first Indonesian Parks established as a recreational and tourism resource because of its breath-snatching scenery, for watershed protection, and as safeguard zone when the volcanoes here erupt.  Its territory, which is dappled with casuarina trees, is actually composed of nature reserved and other protected areas with endemic plants and typical Java wildlife.

Over the years, Mt.Bromo has attracted throngs of tourists, but despite the crowd it brings, it remains undeniably stunning.  The name Bromo is believed to be derived from the Sanskrit word “Brahma”, the highest god in the Hindu religion, so, it’s actually a holy mountain for the locals.  Here’s a detailed Mt. Bromo travel guide with sample Mt.Bromo itinerary and budget to help you plan your trip. You can do it by joining a Mt.Bromo tour (group of private tour) or by doing a DIY Bromo travel.

ABOUT MT. BROMO

bromo blog 41

The Tenggerese drew comfort from a legend that the same great lava flows that occasionally devastated their farms also protect their land. The Tenggerese (also Tengger) is a small group of indigenous people of Java living on the slopes of the Tengger mountains.  They are believed to be the only surviving bloodline of the Hindu-Majapahit Empire. But when the Dutch arrived and established plantation agriculture here, converting sprawling lands into the production of sugarcane and coffee, the Tenggerese were increasingly forced up into the mountains.

Based on anecdotes, sometime in the 14th century, Roro Anteng (the Princess of Majapahit Empire) with her husband Joko Seger fled to Bromo when their kingdom was gradually replaced by Islamic Rule. They ruled the place and named it “Tengger”, derived from their last name. While they formerly call their religion “Buddha Jawa”, their beliefs are said to be closer to Hinduism than Buddhism.

Despite the Kingdom’s success, the couple was unable to conceive an heir. So, they prayed to the gods of Bromo to give them successors. The gods granted their request, but in return they need to throw their last born into the crater as a sacrifice. The couple then had many children. But when their last child named Prince Kesuma was born. They refused to make him as an offer. This anger the gods and Mt.Bromo rumbled and spewed fire, fumes, and ash. This claimed the life of Prince Kesuma who was dragged to the volcano’s crater.

To appease the gods, the couple and their descendants held an annual ceremony called Kasodo at the temple on the foot of Bromo. On the 14th day, they all climbed the volcano and threw their offerings to the still angry crater.  This ceremony is still practiced today, as Mt.Bromo continue to simmer and spew white wisps of smoke rising into thin air.

Another popular base for Bromo tour is Malang, about 1 hour away. There’s also an airport here but it’s quite hard to find flights. There’s a train station too, but the one in Probolingo is nearer to Bromo.

[wp-svg-icons icon=”home” wrap=”i”]   3.  Probolingo

This base is closer to Bromo compared to the two above. This is where the bus and train stations are located. There are also hotels in the area.

[wp-svg-icons icon=”home” wrap=”i”]  4.  Ngadisari

This village is about 3 km back towards Probolingo.  This is where I stayed during my 1 st visit to Bromo in 2010, because the tour package I availed in Yogyakarta booked me in Yoschi Hotel , a rustic hotel with lots of character.

[wp-svg-icons icon=”home” wrap=”i”]   5.  Wonokitri

Also closer to Mt.Bromo, but I don’t have much information on this.

[wp-svg-icons icon=”home” wrap=”i”]  6.  Cemoro Lawang

This is the recommended area to stay for those on a budget as it is peppered with cheap homestays. This is also the closest to Mt. Bromo, located at the tip of the Tengger crater. Our hotel is located in this area on our most recent trip.

We stayed in Jiwa Jiwa Resort, a mid-ranged hotel in Cemoro Lawang.

BROMO TRAVEL GUIDE

How to get to mt.bromo.

bromo blog 20

OPTION 1 (*Recommended if you have limited time.)

If you opt for this route, I recommend you do this if you are traveling alone:

  • Fly from Jakarta  or Bali to Surabaya via Airasia.
  • Join a group tour to Bromo.

Here’s a detailed Bromo Travel Guide from Surabaya:

  By Plane:

Juanda International Airport (Surabaya Airport) serves Sidorajo Regency in East Java.  It is located in Sedati, about 20 km drive from the city center. It is one of the nearest airports to Mt.Bromo, along with the Malang Airport (however, the flights to Malang from other parts of Indonesia is irregular).

If you are coming from Jakarta, Airasia has direct flights to Surabaya, the earliest flight leaves at 5:00 AM. Fare starts at $54.84 (₱/IDR728.20/SGD 73.62/MYR 446.62) and travel time is about 1 hour and 20-35 minutes.  Book here: Airasia.com

To get to Mt.Bromo by DIY travel, from Surabaya, you have to make your way to the town of Probolingo and then Cemoro Lawang.

SURABAYA AIRPORT TO SURABAYA CITY CENTER

1.By Bus: There are several buses from Surabaya Airport to Surabaya City Center.  Fare is IDR 30,000 (₱111,$2,SGD 2.88, MYR 8.72)  and travel time is about 50 minutes.

Bus Line 1: Surabaya Airport to Purabaya Station

Bus Line 2: Surabaya Airport to Ttanjung Perak Station

Bus Line 3: Surabaya Airport to Bunder Gresik Station

*Purabaya Station is the main bus station in Surabaya, with buses heading to Bromo and other parts of Surabaya.

2.By Private Car: If you want a hassle-free transfer, you can hire a private car to transfer you from the Surabaya Airport (Juanda Airport) to your hotel in Surabaya. Depending on the vehicle, it’s good for 2-3 and 4-5 passengers. Inclusive of driver, gas, toll fee, parking fee, and airport fee.

[wp-svg-icons icon=”checkmark-circle” wrap=”i”] BOOK HERE

3.By Taxi: Fixed coupon cabs are available at Surabaya Airport. Travel time to the city center is about 40 minutes. Blue Bird Taxi are the most reliable.

4.By Ride Sharing: Gojek and Grab are available in Surabaya.

SURABAYA TO BROMO

By Tour:   Tour packages also abound in Surabaya to Mt.Bromo, usually include hassle-free transfer to Sukapura village or Cemoro Lawang where you ride the 4×4 jeep to Mt.Penanjakan Hill for the Mt.Bromo sunrise tour, and then transfer back to your hotel in Surabaya. I would recommend this if you are alone and you have limited time since you no longer have to deal with the touts when transferring between Probolingo and Cemoro Lawang. This tour package will end up cheaper if you are a solo traveler than doing DIY tour to Bromo from Surabaya that will involve staying overnight in Cemoro Lawang.

[wp-svg-icons icon=”checkmark-circle” wrap=”i”] RESERVE BROMO TOUR HERE

By DIY Travel: If you plan to do a DIY Tour, here’s a step by step guide from Surabaya to Probolingo to Cemoro Lawang. Take note though that you will end up paying more than joining a tour package from Surabaya especially if you are a solo traveler, but if you want to soak in the atmosphere in Bromo and you want to do the tour at your own pace, by all means, do it DIY.

1.Go to Purabaya Bus Station in Surabaya .

2.At Purabaya Bus Station, ride a bus or minibus to Probolinggo . Travel time is about 3 hours.

3.At Probolingo, make your way to Bayuangga Bus Terminal .

4.At Bayuangga Bus Terminal, change to minibus to Cemoro Lawang. Fare is roughly IDR 35,000 per person. But the minibus only leaves once full, they need about 15 passengers. If you miss the bus or you can no longer wait for the bus to get full, you can pay for the other seats (around IDR 525,000 for the whole minibus), or split that cost with other tourists. If you miss the bus, you can go with those private taxi or bemo (minivan) to Cemoro Lawang. Prepare around IDR 350,000 for 1 taxi or bemo, depending on your haggling skill. Travel time is about 1.5 hours.

5. The minibus will stop over at the ticket office where passengers need to pay IDR 10,000 each as entrance fee to Cemoro Lawang .

6.At Cemoro Lawang, look for your hotel or homestay.

7. At Cemoro Lawang, rent a 4 x 4 jeep or go hike to Penanjakan Hill, the sunrise viewpoint. Touts will offer you the 4 x 4 jeepney, it’s up to you if you want to take this, prepare around IDR for 1 jeep, good for 3 persons.

Otherwise, you can hike for about 1 to 1.5 hours to the sunrise viewpoint. Ask for directions from your hotel staff. The 4×4 jeep will usually pick up tourists for the Bromo sunrise tour around 2:00 AM. If you are a solo traveler, you may also join group tours for 4×4 jeep instead of paying for the entire jeep, inquire with the travel agencies, your hotel or the touts.

Whether you will go by 4 x 4 jeep, motorcycle, or walk on foot, 2:00 – 2:30 AM is the recommended time to start your tour.

8.Pay the entrance fee for Mt.Bromo National Park. For foreigners, the fee is IDR 218,000 during weekdays and IDR 320,000 on weekends and holidays. For locals, fee is IDR 28,000 on weekdays and IDR 38,000 on holidays and weekends.

IMPORTANT: There are a lot of touts in bus stations in Probolingo to Cemoro Lawang, the yellow minibus will drop you at the private van or bus terminals owned by local tour agencies and convince you to take the “taxi” or bemo (minivan) with them (they do this because they get a commission for every passenger that books with the the tour operator). You can take it if you want, if not, just follow the directions above and make sure you use your Google Maps to check of you are actually at the public bus terminal called Bayuangga Bus Terminal. However, the public buses leaving for Cemoro Lawang will only leave once full. It could take up to 3:00 PM, after that, you have no choice but to avail of  those private van or bus. Use your haggling skills if that’s the case.

OPTION 2 (By Train + DIY Tour)

SURABAYA TO PROBOLINGO TO CEMORO LAWANG

If you’ll do this, here’s the summary:

1.Train from Yogyakarta to Bromo , or if you are already in Surabaya, you can get on the train to Probolinggo.  But you have to head first to Surabaya Gubeng Station, about 20 km from Surabaya Airport.  You can go there by taxi or by ride sharing app – Grab.

2.Upon arrival at Probolingo Train Station, exit the station and walk opposite to the bus station.

3.Ride the yellow minibus to Bayuangga Station in Probolinggo.

4.Ride bemo to Cemoro Lawang.

5.Pay Cemoro Lawang entrance fee.

6.Check-in at hotel/homestay

7.Book Bromo sunrise group tour or rent a 4×4 jeep.

8.Pay Mt.Bromo National Park fee.

9.Bromo tour.

Here’s the comprehensive travel guide to Bromo from Yogyakarta and Probolinggo.

By Tour: When I first visited Mt.Bromo in 2010, I just joined a group tour package from Yogyakarta that includes an overnight stay in one of the hotels in Probolingo, one-way transfer to Probolingo, and Mt.Bromo sunrise tour via 4×4 jeepney. It was hassle-free, since you don’t have to deal with the touts. You can inquire the rates from tour agencies in Yogyakarta.

By Train: There’s no Airasia flight from Yogyakarta to Surabaya, so, you either have to take a flight back to Jakarta and fly to Surabaya from there (like we did), or take the train from Yogyakarta to Probolingo.  Travel time is about 8 hours.

There are 3 train stations in Yogyakarta with trains to Probolingo:

Tugu Station (Yogyakarta): This train station is in the city center (near Maliboro Street and the backpacker street of Sosrowijayan) with economy, executive, and business class trains.

Lempuyangan Station: Also located in Yogyakarta city but a little farther from the city center and Tugu Station. Check Google Maps. This is where you can board economy trains.

Wates Station: Has economy trains to Probolingo.

Economy Class(Lempuyangan) – starts at ₱257.49 (IDR 70,000/$4.96/SGD 7)

Economy Class (Tugu Station) – starts at ₱827.63 (IDR 225,000/$15.96/SGD 21.47)

Business Class – starts at ₱827.63 (IDR 225,000/$15.96/SGD 21.47)

Executive Class – starts at ₱1,121.90 (IDR 305,000/$21.63/SGD 29.11)

Here’s the train schedule for Yogyakarta to Probolinggo:

Take note that the train station indicated below is the departure train station, all trains will arrive at Probolingo Station. Rates may change without prior notice. The earlier you book, the lower the price.

bromo 90

Here’s a step by step guide from Probolingo to Cemoro Lawang.

  If arriving by train:

  • Train from Yogyakarta to Probolingo . IDR 70,000 – IDR 305,000
  • Arrive at Probolingo Train Station.
  • Exit the train station. Walk to the opposite side and look for the yellow mini-buses to Bayuangga Bus Terminal . Ignore the touts saying those buses won’t go to the terminal or will leave late. They will talk you to take the private taxi where they will get a commission.
  • Ride yellow minibus to Bayuangga Bus Terminal. Fare is IDR 5,000 – IDR 25,000 per person depending on your haggling skill. Transit time is about 10 minutes. Check Google Maps or the Map.me app to make sure you are the right bus terminal. The driver might drop you in front of a tour agency instead of the bus terminal itself, insist on being dropped off at the Bayuangga Bus Terminal, which is further down the road on the left side.
  • At Bayuangga Bus Terminal, change to minibus to Cemoro Lawang. Fare is roughly IDR 35,000 per person. But it only leaves once full, they need about 15 passengers. If you miss the bus or you can no longer wait for the bus to get full, you can pay for the other seats (around IDR 525,000 for the whole minibus), or split that cost with other tourists. If you miss the bus, you can go with those private taxi or bemo (minivan) to Cemoro Lawang. Prepare around IDR 350,000 for 1 taxi or bemo, depending on your bargaining skill. Travel time is about 1.5 hours.
  • The minibus will stop over at the ticket office where passengers need to pay IDR 10,000 per person as entrance fee to Cemoro Lawang.
  • At Cemoro Lawang, look for your hotel or homestay.
  • Touts will offer you the 4 x 4 jeepney . It’s up to you if you want to take this, prepare around IDR for 1 jeep, good for 3 persons. Otherwise, you can hike for about 45-60 minutes to the sunrise viewpoint.
  • Pay the entrance fee for Mt.Bromo National Park. For foreigners, the fee is IDR 218,000 during weekdays and IDR 320,000 on weekends and holidays. For locals, fee is IDR 28,000 on weekdays and IDR 38,000 on holidays and weekends.

IMPORTANT: There are a lot of touts when doing a DIY travel from Probolingo to Cemoro Lawang, the yellow minibus will drop you at the private van or bus terminals owned by local tour agencies and convince you to take the “taxi” or bemo (minivan) with them. This makes it quite confusing and unfortunately many foreign travelers call this as a scam. You can take it if you want or just follow the directions above and make sure you use your Google Maps to check of you are actually at the public bus terminal called Bayuangga Bus Terminal. However, the public buses leaving for Cemoro Lawang will only leave once full. It could take up to 3:00 PM, after that, you have no choice but to avail of  those private van or bus.

You can try using Grab, but as per reviews on Tripadvisor, it only works around Probolingo. If you try to book to Cemoro Lawang (around IDR 180,000 ), the driver reportedly usually cancel the booking once near and will try to haggle the price with you. Some will also request you to walk a few meters away from the bus terminals for fear of retaliation from the touts or the bus drivers of private transport companies. They might charge extra, or ask for about IDR 550,000 to take you to Cemoro Lawang.

GETTING AROUND MT. BROMO

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by gael | thepinaysolobackpacker (@thepinaysolobackpacker) on Jan 11, 2019 at 7:05pm PST

1.By 4×4 jeep. Good for 3-4 persons. The most convenient. The sunrise tour typically starts at 2:00 AM to 2:30 AM. Here’s the rate of the 4 x4 jeep (Toyota Land Cruisers) in Bromo, good for 3 -4 persons. Use your haggling skills.

2.By motorcycle . I wouldn’t recommend this unless you are with a local driver or you’re are a professional driver because the trail is really rocky, bumpy, and there’s a lot of 4×4 jeeps on the road.

3.By walking. If your hotel is in Cemoro Lawang, you can walk for about 1 hour to 1.5 hours to the sunrise viewpoint on Penanjakan Hill. If you have the energy, then by all means, do this. But this could take up your time. Make sure you bring a flashlight or headlamp, wear sunscreen and face masks because of the dust. If you want to go to the crater, you can ride a motorcycle from Penanjakan Hill  for about IDR 50,000 ((₱184 – $4 – SGD 5) or hike all the way down.

There are 2 popular sunrise viewing point for Mt.Bromo:

  1.Penanjakan Hill

2. 2 nd Viewpoint down Penanjakan Hill

There’s a fee for the Mt.Bromo National Park:

THINGS TO DO IN MT.BROMO

If you avail of the 4 x 4 jeepney tour, there are 2 kinds of tours:

Short Tour: Bromo Sunrise (Penanjakan Hill)+ Bromo Crater

Long Tour: Bromo Sunrise + Viewing Deck 2 + Lava Sand + Bromo Crater + Savannah Hill

Here are the things to do and attractions in Bromo.

1.Watch the sunrise: When visiting Bromo, do the sunrise tour because it’s pretty dreamy when the weather is good. You can witness the surreal sea of clouds surrounding the Bromo massif. It’s pretty dramatic if you ask me. However, be prepared for the crowd. It is pretty crowded even on regular days. Much more on weekends and holidays.

bromo blog 30

TIP: There’s a secluded spot below the paved viewing deck at Penanjakan Hill, but it is pretty slippery and dark. So, if you plan to go there, be very careful. Make sure you have a headlamp or flashlight. Not recommended for the elderly and kids.

2.Photo op at the Lava Sand – Sea of ash and sand surrounding Mt.Bromo. Great spot for photo op.

bromo blog 44

3.Climb the Bromo Crater  – Yes, you can actually climb Mt.Bromo, on foot or by riding a horse  half-way to the volcano.

bromo blog 46

4.Stop Over at the Savannah – If you’re going for the long tour in Bromo, you will stop at the Savannah Hill. It’s a stunning, green landscape that reminds me of  the hills of Batanes. One of my favorite spots in Mt.Bromo.

Stack up cash when visiting Bromo, everything is on cash basis.

Bromo sunrise tours usually starts at 2:30 AM, so if you are arriving late in the afternoon or at night in Cemoro Lawang, you need to find a 4×4 jeep for rent as soon as you arrive.

Based on the itinerary above, if you are a solo traveler, the most practical and cheaper option if you have limited time is to fly to Surabaya via Airasia, book a budget hotel in Surabaya, and then join the group tour to Mt.Bromo.

Never had I ever thought I’d have the opportunity to see an active volcano , let alone hiking to the rim.

Mount Bromo (Gunung Bromo) is notably the most famous volcano in Indonesia due to the fact it is such an easy trip and the reward of witnessing the Bromo volcano is something that truly leaves you speechless.

What’s even more exciting is that this adventure in East Java is close to other travel activities like exploring waterfalls and temples so it makes for an absolutely once-in-a-lifetime trip!

7 Reasons you have to visit Mount Bromo Indonesia

Bucket List – I mean seriously , how many people can say they’ve visited an active volcano

The Views – Literally looking with your naked eyes into a volcano is something magical, but the views of the volcano complex is a photographer’s dream

Adventure – The entire experience of the Mount Bromo tour is absolutely incredible and so far removed from what most people visiting Indonesia just for Bali will ever experience

Effortless – Now when most people think of a volcano, you think you’d be hiking for days – that’s not the case here (this is the most rewarding walk I’ve ever experienced)

Value – Most people spend thousands for an expedition like this, visiting is so affordable that locals love this destination just as much as foreigners!

Location Friendly – The Mount Bromo location is by no means isolated or inaccessible for those flying in or taking the train!

Sleeping in Comfort – So you think you need to camp to see the sunrise?  Not a chance , there’s plenty Mount Bromo accommodation, close enough to sleep in a comfortable bed before your sunrise start!

Now if I haven’t convinced you to try Mount Bromo with the snippet above let me go into detail below (skip to what you need in the Table of Contents above, Because I have to start with the best bits first and logistics later) :

The Mount Bromo Sunrise Journey

sunrise over mount Bromo landscape at bromo Tengger National Park East Java Mount bromo sunrise

I’m not a morning person. Well , sometimes I can be. I’d love to say I’m that chipper person who oozes sunshine when needing to wake up at 2:00 am for a 3:00 am starting, but I’m not.

This however is one of the few times I needed to be that ‘before crack of dawn’ person.

Being ripped from your bed in the early hours is obviously not the way most people would epitomize their vacation, but for the chance to see the Mount Bromo sunrise you’ve got to bite the bullet.

Our guide and driver, Eddy was waiting for us along with the throngs of other Jeeps at the entrance to Mount Bromo National Park. ‘Jeeps’ is in Italics because it’s actually 1980’s Toyota Land Cruisers.

Queue of 1980's Toyota Landcruisers enroute to Mount Bromo East Java - mount bromo sunrise

It’s 3:00 and time to leave, The lengthy queues of Jeeps contained the masses of fellow adventurers eagerly awaiting the start of their adventure to Mount Bromo with the first stop being Mount Penanjakan.

This is the place you NEED TO BE for the sunrise Bromo offers. Getting there is easy. The Jeep literally takes you from your hotel doorstep to the parking area for a quick trip up to the viewpoint.

💡 This is the bonus for arranging your trip through a tour.

The trip was exciting , you’re driving on ‘ who knows what’ in complete darkness , in the back of this old Jeep that makes you truly feel you are truly at the start of an adventure.

With literally just the car lights ahead of you shining onto the next Jeep, you kind of have no idea where you are or where you’re going which just makes the anticipation grow that much more!

One thing you will realise is that wherever you’re going, there’s a lot of sand.

volcanic landscape of Mount Bromo with sea of sand in East Java Indonesia mount bromo sunrise

Depending on how long the queue takes to get into the Bromo Tengger National Park will determine how early you are for sunrise. Our drive was pretty quick and we reached the parking lot for Mount Penanjakan earlier than expected.

So it’s cold . You know when you first land in Indonesia, the first thing that hits you smack in the face is humidity, well, here it’s not the case , at over 2000 metres (8000 ft) altitude, you best be wearing a jacket.

Needless to say, some warming up was in order and was easily arranged. In the parking area, there are plenty of little makeshift stalls and cafe-type structures selling coffee, teas, and warm snacks.

We made sure to get some warmth in before Eddy, discreetly motioned us to follow him.

It seems we were going to a little area of Mount Penanjakan that was not as crowded as the other viewpoints.

The seclusion and secretiveness of stealthily creeping behind the cafes and makeshift paths towards the viewpoint was so exciting.

A short walk up and we were there in place to start watching the slivers of sun creep in.

As the clouds and became less visible and the light peeked through, I knew that this moment would be one I’d remember for the rest of my life.

What materialized from the clouds by the sun was at the time one of the most beautiful views I had ever seen.

Mt Bromo: Quiet, breathtaking, and yet so powerful. It’s a moving moment. You can really just sit for hours and stare. Which I did.

Panoramic shot of Mount Bromo landscape at sunrise from Mount Penanjakan in Probolinggo East Java mount bromo sunrise

The Mount Bromo images and photography from this viewpoint are honestly the most beautiful I’ve ever seen and can truly say this is one of the few destinations where what you see in the pictures is truly what you are getting with NO FILTERS NEEDED!

TRAVELIST INSIGHT: I’m not sure if you’ve realised yet, but I still haven’t mentioned the word ‘hike’. With all the pictures you’ve seen, there’s literally been no hiking! So what do people actually mean when they say ‘hike Mount Bromo’? That part comes next.

Reaching the Mount Bromo Crater Rim

This is where the words ‘hiking Mount Bromo’ are derived but as I’ll explain, there’s no hiking involved at all.

Once you’ve finished basking in the beauty of the Mt Bromo sunrise, the jeep will take you down Mount Penanjakan and across the sea of sand.

Bromo‘s crater rim climb involves taking the Jeep close enough to the base of Bromo which is actually what we passed in the early hours of darkness.

The Jeep will then drop you off at the parking area, and you’ll make your way on foot across the sea of sand. This is where you truly come to terms with the fact that this is a volcano.

travel jogja bromo

The sand is actually volcanic ash. And there is a ton of it. You definitely need to be wearing some sunglasses and a mask or buff over your mouth.

The walk isn’t very far, but there is the option to ride a horse to the stairs for a fee. I’m just mentioning this, It’s not something I’ve tried or have any insights into.

travel jogja bromo

Now I mentioned the words stairs. Yes, there are stairs . There are stairs to reach the crater rim of Mt Bromo Indonesia! How crazy and effortlessly convenient is that?!?

Hiking Mount Bromo actually involves NO HIKING at all!

Yes, the stairs involve the effort of doing them, but you can easily take your time and do it at your own pace, and it’s really no more difficult than walking uphill.

The stair way up to Mount Bromo after mount bromo sunrise

My mind was blown . I really thought that you would need some level of physical fitness to embark on this adventure of the summit of Mount Bromo volcano. The Mt Bromo hike is literally a walk and some stairs.

If you can do that in your day-to-day life, there literally is no further preparation needed to conquer this mountain.

‘Hiking’ Bromo Indonesia was easier than running 1 kilometre (less than a mile!).

The Bromo view even from the stairs is quite other-worldly . I’ve never been to another planet (as many of us haven’t) , but I imagine that this must be what the landscape must be like.

Mount Bromo crater was a quick walk up the stairs and there you have it. You are literally face-to-face with the crater of an active volcano.

travel jogja bromo

Another factor making this feat so incredible is that the entire crater rim is completely walkable (at your own safety) . There is a barrier between yourself and the crater as you reach the top of the stairs, but you can easily walk left or right for an unobstructed view.

You do need to be careful. It can be sandy and slippery so you do this at your own safety expense.

It is mesmerizing though. It’s not the lava and magma you see from an eruption, but the sulfur deposits and gases that actually create the billowing smoke that is characteristic of volcanoes.

travel jogja bromo

I couldn’t believe my eyes.

It was a moment I didn’t even know I needed to tick off my bucket list.

Now onto the nitty-gritty details. If you’re looking for how to plan this trip to Indonesia, below is a Mount Bromo comprehensive guide on everything you need to know about visiting and planning a trip to Gunung Bromo Indonesia

Where is Mount Bromo?

Simply put, It’s located in Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park, East Java, Probolinggo near the small town of Cemoro Lawang . Check it out on the map below

When to Visit Mount Bromo?

The best time to visit Mount Bromo would be between April/May to October . Our visit was in the first week of June .

Indonesia only has two seasons (dry season and wet season). The wet season starts in November and lasts till mid to end of April. I’d recommend trying to visit Gunung Bromo Indonesia just out of the rainy season in May or June.

How To Get to Mount Bromo

Mount Bromo is an easily accessible location and can be reached from a number of cities. The closest major cities to Mount Bromo are Malang and Surabaya. Surabaya is a bigger city hub therefore, most people fly to Surabaya and drive to Cemoro Lawang Bromo accommodation.

Bali to Bromo

✈️ OPTION 1: The fastest way is to book a flight from Bali (Ngurah Rai International Airport) to Surabaya Airport (Juanda International Airport) where you can be picked up by your tour company.

🚢🚌 OPTION 2: The second option involves a couple of transfers. In Bali you will need to head to Gilimanuk Port , you then will depart Gilimanuk to East Java’s Ketapang Port . After arriving in Ketapang Port, head to the bus terminal to take a bus to Surabaya bus station, after arriving at Surabaya you can then be collected by your tour company to transfer to Cemoro Lawang.

TRAVELIST TIP: If you think flying is pricey here, you’re highly misinformed . In Indonesia, there are a number of low-cost carriers and domestic airlines so finding a deal that’s as cheap as taking the ferry, train or bus is pretty easy.

Yogyakarta to Bromo

🚆 OPTION 1: Take a train from Yogyakarta to Surabaya (approximately 4 hours). Get collected by your tour company and transferred to Cemoro Lawang Bromo accommodation.

✈️ OPTION 2: There is also the option to fly from Yogyakarta (Adisucipto International Airport) to Surabaya . Then be collected by your tour company from the airport.

Have more time to spend in Yogyakarta? 📖 Check out these Incredible UNESCO World Heritage sites : Borobudur Temple and Prambanan Temple

Surabaya to Bromo

TRAVELIST TIP: The Surabaya Bromo tour option is a popular one because Surabaya is a more popular destination (and cheaper) to fly to from bigger cities like Jakarta, Bali, or Yogyakarta.

✈️🚆 OPTION 1: Get your tour company to collect you from the train station/ airport and head to Cemoro Lawang for your accommodation.

💡 PERSONAL EXPERIENCE: We did this trip as part of a combined tour that included Mount Bromo, Ijen Crater, and Tumpak Sewu Waterfalls. I strongly suggest a combined tour and making the most of your time in East Java and these spots are seriously not to be missed! ➡️ BOOK IT HERE

🚌 OPTION 2: (Public Transport) In Surabaya you will be able to use public transportation like the bus to get to Probolinggo , another ‘main’ city close to Mount Bromo. The bus will then stop in Probolinggo where you will then need to get into a smaller green mini-bus to get to Cemoro Lawang. There is also the option to take a train from Surabaya Station to Probolinggo Station and then do the minibus transfer to Cemoro Lawang.

Malang to Bromo

🚗 OPTION 1: Stay in Malang, use a tour company that leaves from Malang to Mount Bromo.

🚌 OPTION 2: (Public Transport) Head to the Malang Bus station and take a bus to Probolinggo, From there take the small minibus van to Cemoro Lawang

Mount Bromo Tours

When visiting Indonesia, Mount Bromo is basically a necessity to visit regardless of whether you’re just looking for a Boho Bali trip. Bromo is actually so well situated that it makes for a great destination to combine with other stops in East Java .

🔥One of the most popular tours is the Mount Bromo Ijen Crater Tour , 3 days across Java including a stop at an amazing waterfall.

Whether you choose to tour Bromo only , an Ijen Bromo tour , or even a Mount Bromo Tumpak Sewu waterfall tour – You will not be disappointed!

Mount Bromo Tour Package Prices

Prices will vary depending on whether you visit Mount Bromo only or do a tour combined with other destinations like the Mount Bromo-Ijen tour.

TRAVELIST TIP: Be sure to check your inclusions and exclusions in tour packages prior to booking . Things like entrance tickets, jeep rental, driver, guides, etc. may seem mandatory, but if something is not stipulated – ASK!!!

A typical private 3 day 2-night Surabaya Mount Bromo tour can start from IDR 3. 5 to 5 million and upwards per person.

💡 PERSONAL EXPERIENCE: Our Mt Bromo tour price was 3 days and 2 nights and included Mount Bromo, Tumpak Sewu Waterfall, and Ijen Crater, 2 nights accommodation, drivers, guide, and all entrance fees were included. The only exclusions were lunch and dinner. We paid 4 million IDR per person. This is an EXTREMELY GOOD Mt Bromo tour package for a PRIVATE TOUR from Surabaya at the time.

travel jogja bromo

If you don’t go for the tour package option, here’s an idea of the Mount Bromo tour price for the individual fees below

Mount Bromo Entrance Fees

Mount Bromo Entrance Fees: TOURIST – IDR 220 000 (weekdays) IDR 320 000 (weekends and peak season), LOCAL – IDR 29.5000 (weekdays) IDR 34.000 (weekends)

Mount Bromo Jeep Fees

Jeep Rental Fees: These fees are determined by whether you just visit the Mount Penanjakan Viewpoint (short tour) or visit the Mount Penanjakan viewpoint and go to the crater Rim (long tour)

🚙 Short Tour Jeep Price: low season- IDR 500 000; high season- IDR 650 000

🚙 Long Tour Jeep Price: low season- IDR 700 000; high season- IDR 850 000

These fees are In addition to the entrance fees, but a Jeep can take 4 people so you could also find others to share with and split the costs.

PERSONAL OPINION: There have been many articles stating how you should never take the first price provided and that locals are out to cheat foreigners and overcharge or even scam you. The tours that I have recommended above are reviewed and operated by reputable companies using local guides and drivers. I STRONGLY RECOMMEND USING A TOUR COMPANY   for the reasons that the jobs are given to locals and this is their source of income and you are also contributing to the growing economy of this third world country.

I also believe that the people reporting being scammed and overcharged are not using reputable and reviewed guides and agents. Most local guides, companies, and drivers are charging the figures listed above.

If you are getting a deal vastly different from what’s listed above, then perhaps it’s shady and you should look elsewhere. Things that are too good to be true, usually aren’t!

What to Wear to the Mount Bromo Sunrise

As mentioned above the weather in Cemoro Lawang is cold!

Like European winter cold!

It’s not very common to wear long pants and jackets in such a tropical country but at these altitudes, you’ll need to cover up. I suggest dressing in layers as you’ll probably want to peel some off after you’ve summited the Mount Bromo crater.

PACK THESE ITEMS

🧥 Warm Jacket – something not too heavy (Down jackets are great and easy to fold up and pop back into your backpack)

🧥A Vest or Thin Activewear Top – to wear under your thin top (You might be questioning whether you need 3 layers – typically get hot and 3 layers were just enough for sunrise)

🧥 Long Thin Top – to wear under your jacket to shield you from the chill after the jacket becomes too much

🧥 Beanie – My ears were freezing, it’s recommended!

🧥 Gloves – my fingertips were going numb, you need these.

🧥 Buff/ Bandanna or Mask – to cover your mouth whilst driving in the jeep across the sea of sand and for the walk to the crater rim.

🧥 Sunglasses – to shield your eyes from the ash and dust when walking across the sea of sand (and generally just from the sun)

🧥 Sports Sneakers or Shoes with a bit of Grip – closed shoes are recommended for the walk through the sand as well as for ankle support in the soft sand (hiking boots are not essential)

🧥 Light Day Bag or Backpack – for your camera gear, water and to put your layers in after you’ve taken them off

Typical Mount Bromo Sunrise Hike Itinerary

One of the things I absolutely love about this adventure destination is that this incredible experience can be accomplished literally in one morning. Your Bromo mountain tour starts at 3:00 am and completes at 10:30 am.

This is a typical Mount Bromo itinerary for sunrise:

  • An early morning start of 3 am is required for the Mount Bromo Sunrise Hike tour.
  • The jeep will then take you to Mount Penanjakan (a 30 to 40-minute drive depending on how busy it is that day).
  • It will park just before Mount Penanjakan, where you will walk for about 10-15 minutes to the top of Mount Penanjakan for the King Kong Hill Viewpoint. The time for sunrise will usually be about 5:30 am. Indulge in something warm to drink and snack on from the vendors
  • From the top of Mount Penanjakan, you will see a panoramic birds-eye sunrise view of the gigantic Tengger Caldera, Mount Bromo, Mount Semeru, and other lesser but equally impressive volcanic cones.
  • After sunrise, you will board the jeep again, where you will be driven down (approximately a 20-minute ride) to the bed of the caldera via the plains through the Seas of Sand.
  • The jeep will stop at a car park just beside The Poten – a Tenggerese Hindu temple.
  • Then walk across the seas of sand (volcanic ash)
  • Next is the Mount Bromo steps: a concrete flight of (approximately 240) steps will lead you from the base of Mount Bromo to its crater rim, where you can peer down into its crater.
  • After taking in the scenery, you will head back to board the Jeep
  • The jeep will take you back to your accommodation where you can warm up/cool down with a shower, have some breakfast and check out of your accommodation around 10:30 am or 11:00 am

for your information, mount Bromo has uniqe destination between nature and people culture there. Tengger people is the origin of bromo culture. They keep the nature and make some rules for the tourist. You have to visit Bromo and get double destination between nature and culture. Thank’s for your article and i’am as travel agency so proud it.

  • Best Way to Travel from Yogyakarta to Mount Bromo

Even if you’re only planning to visit top places of interest in Indonesia ‘s Java Island, Yogyakarta with its magnificent temples Borobudur and Prambanan and picturesque volcano Mount Bromo most probably will be on your list. Yogyakarta and Mount Bromo are quite far from each other with no direct routes between them, making traveling from Yogyakarta to Mt Bromo quite an adventure.

Mount Bromo

What options you have to choose from when planning to travel from Yogyakarta to Mt Bromo?

Taxi/Private Car from Yogyakarta to Mt Bromo

The easiest, most comfortable but not necessarily the fastest way is taking a taxi or private car directly all the way from Yogyakarta to Mount Bromo. Tour companies in Yogyakarta can help you with arranging it but don’t expect it to be cheap.

All other transport options include going to Probolinggo, which is the nearest town to Mt. Bromo, first and then taking a bus from Probolinggo to Mt Bromo. Keep in mind that buses between Probolinggo and Mt Bromo operate only until 4 pm, so you need to arrive to Probolinggo earlier than that. Otherwise, you will be stuck in Probolinggo for one night and there’s really not much to see and do in the town.

Bus from Yogyakarta to Probolinggo

Some of the buses going from Yogyakarta to Bali stop at Probolinggo but you need to check at the station first as bus tickets can’t be booked in advance. Buses in Java are unreliable and depending on traffic the trip by bus from Yogyakarta to Probolinggo might take 10-12 hours or sometimes even more. This way of traveling from Yogyakarta to Mt Bromo might be one of the cheapest (costs about 150000 IDR) but it won’t be comfortable and the time of your arrival can be unpredictable. Even if you will take a bus very early, you still risk missing the last bus to Mt Bromo.

Train from Yogyakarta to Probolinggo

There are 3 daily trains going directly from Yogyakarta to Probolinggo but they all come too late for catching a bus to Mt Bromo on the same day.

A direct train to Probolinggo leaves from the main train station of Yogyakarta (Tugu Station). Ranggajati train departs from Tugu Station at 09.56 and is expected to arrive at Probolinggo train station at 18.14 as the trip should take 8 hours and 18 minutes. Normally the trains in Java come on the schedule, unlike the buses. The trip on this train can cost from 185000 IDR to 315000 IDR, depending on seat class and availability as cheapest seats are usually sold out first.

Train from Yogyakarta to Probolinggo

There are also 2 economic trains to Probolinggo departing from Lempuyangan Station in Yogyakarta: Logawa and Sritanjung. Taking one of these trains is the cheapest way to get from Yogyakarta to Probolinggo as the ticket costs only 74000 IDR or 94000 IDR.

Logawa train leaves Yogyakarta at 08.57 and goes directly to Probolinggo with no stopover in Surabaya. The train should arrive at Probolinggo at 17.35.

Sritanjung train is the earliest available train leaving Lempuyangan Station in Yogyakarta at 7:00 and arriving at Probolinggo at 16.10.

Flight from Yogyakarta to Surabaya + Train or Bus to Probolinggo

You can fly from Yogyakarta Adisutjipto International Airport (JOG) to Surabaya as there are plenty of direct flights between these two cities.

Flight from Yogyakarta to Surabaya

Some of the flights are early enough for you to catch a morning train from Surabaya to Probolinggo which departs at 09.00. Another option is taking a bus from Surabaya to Probolinggo.

Current schedule of Indonesian domestic flights can be found and flight tickets can be booked here: Flights from Yogyakarta to Surabaya .

The price of the flight isn’t the only downside of this way of traveling from Yogyakarta to Mt Bromo as you will additionally need to arrange transportation from central Yogyakarta to Yogyakarta airport and from Surabaya Airport to the train or bus station in the city.

Train from Yogyakarta to Surabaya + Train or Bus to Probolinggo

There are plenty of direct trains running between Yogyakarta Tugu Station and Surabaya Gubeng Station. However, if you are willing to take a morning train from Surabaya to Probolinggo at 09.00, you will have to take an overnight train from Yogyakarta to Surabaya. Traveling at night helps you to save time and money on accommodation but taking an overnight train in Indonesia isn’t comfortable, as even the most expensive executive class trains here don’t have sleepers. The distance between Yogyakarta and Surabaya is 308 km and the journey by train takes from 4.5 to 5.5 hours, depending on the train.

Train from Yogyakarta to Surabaya

Overnight business / executive class trains leave Yogyakarta Tugu Station at 00.52, 01.38 and 03.30. All these trains reach Surabaya Gubeng Station early in the morning and you can connect with a train going to Probolinggo at 09.00 from the same railway station.

If you don’t mind spending a night in Surabaya, you can take train from Yogyakarta Tugu Station at 06.45, 09.56, 16.00 and 16.40. The journey by business / executive class trains costs from 165000 IDR to 375000 IDR, depending on the seat class and availability as cheapest seats are usually sold out first.

Train from Yogyakarta to Surabaya

Staying overnight in Surabaya might be avoided by taking 06.45 train from Yogyakarta and traveling from Yogyakarta to Probolinggo by bus but in bad traffic conditions you might find yourself in a race with time.

There are four economy trains running daily between Lempuyangan Station in Yogyakarta and Surabaya Gubeng station. The journey by economy trains take from 6 to 7.5 hours. The fare varies from 74000 IDR to 104000 IDR. However, none of these trains will suite you if you are not willing to overnight in Surabaya.

Train from Yogyakarta to Surabaya

There are few trains going from Surabaya Gubeng Station to Probolinggo. However, only business / executive train departing from Surabaya at 09.00 and economy train departing at 04.25 are suitable for getting to Mt Bromo from Probolinggo on the same day. The train ticket price varies from 29000 IDR in economy class up to 275000 IDR for executive class.

Train from Surabaya to Probolinggo

If you will miss these trains, get a bus going from Surabaya to Probolinggo instead as they are much more frequent.

Best Way to Travel from Yogyakarta to Mt Bromo

What is the best way to travel from Yogyakarta to Mt Bromo?

Actually there is no correct answer as it subjectively depends on your priorities . However, taking a bus all the way is really not recommended.

Private car will be really expensive, especially if you’re a solo traveler.

By taking a direct train you will be stuck in Probolinggo for one night so consider this option only if you have plenty of time to waste or like visiting ordinary towns and looking for a real local feel.

If you’re a heavy sleeper and don’t need much comfort for sleeping, taking an overnight train to Surabaya and morning train to Probolinggo can save you one night at hotel and let you reach Mt Bromo on the same day.

Surabaya has much more to offer for tourists than Probolinggo so you can plan a stopover in the second largest city of Indonesia. You can take a day train from Yogyakarta to Surabaya, spend a night there and next morning get on the early train or bus to Probolinggo. Staying overnight in Surabaya can be avoided by taking 06.45 train from Yogyakarta and traveling from Yogyakarta to Probolinggo by bus.

In case you can find a good deal for an early flight from Yogyakarta to Surabaya , this might be the best way to travel to Mt Bromo. Taking a flight to Surabaya at 06.00 will give you enough time for catching a morning train to Probolinggo. Otherwise, you can take a bus going from Surabaya to Probolinggo.

We always try to use public transportation whenever we travel. It’s normally the cheapest and most environment friendly way of traveling, giving you the best local feel. That’s why taking a private car for such a long distance wasn’t even considered.

Our Indonesian trip schedule was very tight so we tried to avoid staying overnight in Surabaya and Probolinggo at any cost. This condition automatically took all direct trains and buses out of the list.

One thing is common between all ways of traveling from Yogyakarta to Mt Bromo, whatever transport you will be taking, if you want to reach Mt Bromo on the same day, you need to wake up early.

As we are not light sleepers and can take a good nap even while sitting, there was little difference between waking up very early and sleeping on overnight train, especially when spending the evening at Malioboro night market the night before leaving Yogyakarta was an important part of our trip plan. In this case we have chosen the most wallet friendly option – taking overnight train to Surabaya and morning train to Probolinggo .

How did it go, read here: From Yogyakarta to Mount Bromo by Overnight Train .

It is advisable to book your train tickets online in advance as the cheapest seats sell out quickly in Indonesia and there's a risk to miss out getting on the particular train as seats are limited. Tiket is the most popular online system for booking train tickets in Indonesia and we always use it.

Current schedule of Indonesian domestic flights can be found and flight tickets can be booked here:  Flights from Yogyakarta to Surabaya .

  • 476shuyuh 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Loved my experience in Indonesia and I can't wait to come back again! :) After browsing through a lot of options for the Tumpak Sewu/Bromo/Ijen tour, I ended up deciding on this one since it's a longer tour that also covers Borobudur and Prambanan. My overall experience with my guide, Yovi, and the tour company, was positive, and I would not hesitate to book with them again. That being said, I do think there were some details that weren't clear in the descriptions and didn't match with my expectations. The tour starts in Yogyakarta instead of Surabaya. This is in the descriptions but a detail that I overlooked because most trips to Bromo/Ijen start in Surabaya. This tour option seemed to be pretty unique and I didn't find anything similar elsewhere. While it's a 5 day tour, the hotel on the first night (in Yogyakarta) isn't actually included. Again, I believe this is in the descriptions but I overlooked it & simply assumed that hotel would be covered for all the nights during the tour. I really like the fact that the tour company and my tour guide Yovi were very flexible in helping me adjust my itinerary. I had booked the tour to start on a Monday, but Borobudur and Prambana are closed on Mondays. Because of that, we modified my itinerary slightly to fit Borobudur on the day before and Prambana on the morning after. Yovi took great care of me and picked me up from the airport. I was a little nervous about the tour because I was traveling solo, but he really went above and beyond to help me (e.g. took me to get a phone SIM card) and to provide an amazing experience for me. Now, some clarifying details about the trip. My guide Yovi was my driver and provided helpful information for most questions I had. He spoke amazing English and I had no problem conversing with him, even on non-daily topics. I thought that a guide would be traveling with us, but actually, it did not turn out to be the case. At most of the attractions we had local guides, but not all of them were private (or 1-1). At Borobudur I was in a group tour organized by the temple. At Prambanan and Kampung Pelangi (rainbow village) I did not have a tour guide, but Yovi walked me around Kampung Pelangi (and to be honest there really wasn't that big of an attraction, so I think not having a guide here made sense). At Tumpak Sewu I had a private tour guide. At Bromo I had a private Jeep for the sunrise tour but no tour guide for the actual climbing of Mount Bromo (to the crater). And lastly, at Ijen, I had a group tour (this one happened to be small and only had 4 people that day including me). I had mostly positive experiences with all the tours, but this was just something that wasn't clear to me when I signed up for this trip. Even at the attractions where I did not a guide, Yovi did his best to make sure that I had a good experience and did not get lost. The only one that was difficult for me to navigate was Prambanan. I happened to have gone on a day when there were a lot of student groups doing field trips, so it was extremely crowded and I kept getting asked to get photos with them (which was super weird to me at first, but I later realized that they generally had friendly intentions). I think someone local accompanying me would've helped the experience, because 1) I felt so weird about everyone asking me for photos because I had no idea why and 2) I really wasn't able to explore freely with a crowd following behind me the entire time. I also think it would've helped if someone explained the details and the intricacies of the culture and history of the temples there. My local guide at Tumpak Sewu and Ijen were both amazing. There were some adjustments that we had to make to my itinerary, but the tour operator informed me ahead of time and I was okay with these changes. I do feel that they could have provided more information on what I needed to bring. I asked ahead of time if there was anything I needed to bring, but didn't really get much of an answer besides a windbreaker for hiking, and by the time I got that answer, I was already overseas. So this information didn't really help me. For Tumpak Sewu, I would highly recommend wearing a bathing suit underneath in case you decide to swim or go into the cave. I was wet head to toe after this and sitting in wet clothes really wasn't pleasant. I like that the tour company had scheduled me for very early tours in order to avoid the crowd and to make sure that I got the complete experience. We were one of the first groups to reach the Ijen blue fires as well as the waterfalls at Tumpak Sewu. This made such a difference! Getting up 1-2 hours earlier for me was 100% worth it. By the time we were finished with photos, the places were beginning to get very crowded. As we were climbing back up from the Ijen blue fires, there were so many people trying to get down in a rush (because you can only see the blue fires before daylight) and struggling. Lastly, I called Viator ahead of time to confirm where this trip ends, because it simply said "Bali" in the descriptions. They had told me "anywhere in Bali". This turned out to not be the case and the trip ends at the ferry port and you ride the ferry by yourself to Bali. If you have some other itinerary planned in Bali or need to get to the airport, you would need to arrange transportation yourself and it's actually a pretty long drive (around 4 hours). The accommodations were comfortable and pleasant. Also, Yovi had to do so much driving over the 5 days, especially early in the morning (there were days where we had to leave at 1am or 12pm), and I'm incredibly grateful for that. I was able to take naps in the car mostly and I can't imagine how he was able to do all of that. In regard to the itinerary itself, I think it really depends on what you want to see. I came for Mount Bromo and that was the one thing that I HAD TO do, but I ended up also doing Borobudur and Prambanan because I wasn't sure if and when I will have another opportunity for them. The rainbow village itself was not that exciting, but you probably wouldn't be going for the rainbow village anyway. Borobudur and Prambanan are very interesting from both a cultural and historical perspective if you have an interest in that, and for me it was okay that I am not necessarily religious. Yogyakarta itself is also a less "touristy" city (it's popular among domestic tourists but not international tourists) where you can experience more "real" Indonesian culture if that's something on your list. I ended up having a lot of fun at Tumpak Sewu and Ijen was such a beautiful surprise that exceeded all my expectations, and I would 100% say that Tumpak Sewu/Bromo/Ijen are worth going. The package is a little pricey for one person, and I would recommend booking with more people if you want to bring down the cost. Read more Written January 11, 2024

But, climbing the mountain with Jeep at morning 4 am and seeing the views from top of mountain was very enjoyable. And, we got the very good driver called Indira as well. He is punctual. In the early morning,he arrived at the hotel exactly as scheduled to pick up us.He made sure to tell us all the knowledge about our trip. He bought and served traditional snacks as breakfast 😊. Another thing is that he drives very well, he knows the roads well, and he leads us so that we don't delay the trip. We liked his service so much that we continued to rent his car even for our back to the airport. We highly recommend other travelers to hire him 👍. Read more Written January 2, 2024

The trains and stations of the Moscow Metro

2 Comments · Posted by Alex Smirnov in Cities , Travel , Video

The Moscow Metro is the third most intensive subway system in the world after Tokyo and Seoul subways. The first line was opened on May 15, 1935. Since 1955, the metro has the name of V.I. Lenin.

The system consists of 12 lines with a total length of 305.7 km. Forty four stations are recognized cultural heritage. The largest passenger traffic is in rush hours from 8:00 to 9:00 and from 18:00 to 19:00.

Cellular communication is available on most of the stations of the Moscow Metro. In March 2012, a free Wi-Fi appeared in the Circle Line train. The Moscow Metro is open to passengers from 5:20 to 01:00. The average interval between trains is 2.5 minutes.

The fare is paid by using contactless tickets and contactless smart cards, the passes to the stations are controlled by automatic turnstiles. Ticket offices and ticket vending machines can be found in station vestibules.

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

By Claudia Looi 2 Comments

Komsomolskaya metro station

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

3. Arbatskaya Metro Station served as a shelter during the Soviet-era. It is one of the largest and the deepest metro stations in Moscow.

4. Biblioteka Imeni Lenina Metro Station was built in 1935 and named after the Russian State Library. It is located near the library and has a big mosaic portrait of Lenin and yellow ceramic tiles on the track walls.

5. Kievskaya Metro Station was one of the first to be completed in Moscow. Named after the capital city of Ukraine by Kiev-born, Nikita Khruschev, Stalin's successor.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.

9. Belorusskaya Metro Station is named after the people of Belarus. In the picture below, there are statues of 3 members of the Partisan Resistance in Belarus during World War II. The statues were sculpted by Sergei Orlov, S. Rabinovich and I. Slonim.
