Expert fears private Kwik Trip customer data at risk due to disruptions

MEQUON, Wis. — A power outage caused Kwik Trip app users to be unable to use their app.

According to Kwik Trip's X account , app users are still experiencing issues. Guests who have the Kwik Trip card cannot make purchases at the moment. Kwik Trip said several areas are impacted. The Mequon Kwik Trip had several paper signs taped to doors alerting customers of the issue.

"We have been working diligently to restore our systems as quickly and safely as possible," Kwik Trip Public Relations Specialist Amy DuPont said. "We have made significant progress over the past few days and anticipate that services will be incrementally restored over the coming days. We will let you know of any further developments and appreciate your patience."

Patience is something Niki Schultz is willing to afford a place that's earned her respect.

"Kwik Trip is my go-to, for sure," Schultz said. "But unfortunately, if nothing is done about this, I will probably go elsewhere."

Earlier this week, Schultz, who lives in Waterloo, was at a Kwik Trip in Oconomowoc. She had forgotten her purse but had her Kwik Trip credit card with her.

"I swiped my rewards plus credit card and it said invalid card," Schultz recalled. "I tried three times swiping my card and it kept saying invalid."

She had to drive back to Waterloo and then back to Oconomowoc, over an hour round trip. It was already an inconvenience, but now she's nervous about how this could impact her finances. She tried to pay off a balance on her Kwik Trip card, but because of the outage she's unable to do so. If she's penalized for not making an on-time payment, it could spell disaster for her family.

"Being a single mom of two boys and currently not working, it would be a big impact," Schultz said.

But this could be just the beginning of trouble for her and customers across the state. One expert believes this could be the signs of a cyberattack that could impact both Kwik Trip and its customers.

"It sounds like a cyberattack and quite serious at that," Alex Holden, Chief Information Security Officer at Hold Security said. "The gas stations are still functional which is a good thing. But some of the infrastructure most likely within Kwik Trips have been disabled for five days now. That's a very long time. Usually companies on day two or day three give us some kind of status."

Holden says this situation has all of the earmarks of a cyberattack.

"This seems to be a situation with ransomware where the bad guys get into the systems of the company, encrypt it, lock away their data and most likely stole some data as well," Holden said.

These types of attacks are becoming more prevalent. According to the FBI , internet crimes were responsible for $6.9 billion dollars in losses in 2021. That number jumped to $10.2 billion last year.

The FBI data also shows in Wisconsin, there were $15,000 in losses due to ransomware in 2021. Last year, that jumped to $286,200.

Just last month, Johnson Controls was struck by a ransomware attack, where hackers demanded $51 million . According to an SEC filing on Sept. 27 , Johnson Controls said it "has experienced disruptions in portions of its internal information technology infrastructure and applications resulting from a cybersecurity incident."

In August, Caesars Entertainment, a Las Vegas casino, faced a cyberattack where they paid a $15 million ransom. But it didn't stop there.

Thursday, Caesars told its customers at least 41,397 people had their data stolen in the grift, according to The Register.

Holden says, even though Kwik Trip and Caesars are on different levels, the cyber swindle remains the same and people in Wisconsin should be concerned.

"They should be taking this more seriously because at the end of the day, it's likely a cyberattack," Holden said. "Their information can be endangered if they trusted anything to Kwik Trip."

HOW CAN YOU LOVE A GAS STATION?

Right - it’s generally like a ‘63 Chevy on a -15 day in January. Yes, a non-starter. Not even a possibility. But Kwik Trip is not your ordinary pull in and gas up and getaway place. If you don’t develop a strong desire for the Cinnamon Rolls or the Great Cream Dream Dunkers you probably can’t ever get by the Captcha “I’m not a Robot” tests. And even more addictive are the 2 or3 piece baked chicken pieces. I can feel my car pulling in all on its own whenever I drive near a KT - so I have a hard time choosing a route where I don’t have to fight the steering wheel. I’m sure if Col. Sanders had lived, he’d prefer the KT chicken to any bucket of his own. He knew good chicken and KT might have send him down a whole different cuisine cruise. Anyone for K Fried Gator? Then there’s also the whole range of stuffed breakfast buns and biscuits and croissants, and hot cheesy sticks and - not to mention lunch options. And yes, even the gas is good. Real good. Top tier s by tuff. My cars all like it, even the fancy German one that demands “Premium” . Made me feel good when I saw a guy in a McLaren filling up one day. (And I swear he walked out with a box of Dunkers too!) Anyway / to answer my question - Yes, it IS possible. Actually - it’s LIKELY once you pull in and try one. If that scares you - well that’s OK. Just keep going to those places that specialize in air fresheners and 25cent air machines. See you next time?

I love that there are many Kwik trips near me and when I am traveling in the Midwest. Here are some of my favorite things. First, I love that I can buy quick or Kwik grocery items without going to a grocery store. If I stop to get gas on my way home and need some item to make dinner, it’s easy. If I don’t feel like making dinner there are options for that. Although I’ve never done this, my friend calls ahead and has hot food or pizza made for pickup. Second, I am very judgy about clean bathrooms and Kwik trip always has clean ones or an option to notify staff if there is an issue. Third, free air. That is so thoughtful in my opinion. It makes me more loyal to Kwik trip because they are there for me when my car signals low tire pressure. It’s a brilliant way to have people stop at a Kwik trip. Kudos to the person who thought of that. Finally, I love how friendly the staff is. Always willing to be helpful and make good suggestions. They always say see you next time and I laugh to myself “if only you know how often I’m here “. #kwiktriplove

As once a customer and now an employee at the Kwik Trip in Cameron, all I can say is, WOW! The other Employees were all very welcoming of the new trainee, the guests were always or almost happy with their purchases. Those who weren’t we addressed the issue and made ways to amend the issue or situation on hand. The kitchen staff that I work with all are understanding of the learning disability I have and have done a tremendous amount of work and through many new ways of help in this area of which I struggle the employees have been such great help to me, I would HIGHLY recommend stopping and if in the area do some shopping at this fine convenient establishment. Prices on their products is very reasonable, plus the bosses I work under are both very understanding if I need to make an appointment, something comes up, or I.E something else, but within a 24 hr. notice

Kwik Trip will discontinue bagged milk in May

It was a partnership going back more than 40 years, however the convenience store chain, founded in Wisconsin , announced Wednesday that Nature's Touch bagged milk will be discontinued at all stores beginning in May.

Kwik Trip said in a news release that "guest preferences and purchasing patterns have indicated a substantial declining demand for this product compared to milk sold in jugs."

John McHugh, vice president of external relations, said Kwik Trip has begun to contact groups who had special promotional coupons for bagged milk and have offered a new solution with other milk offerings.

"This is an end to a product that was associated with the Kwik Trip brand for many years, but after evaluating the need and cost for new equipment to replace our antiquated bagged milk equipment, and the decreased customer demand, we made the tough decision to discontinue Nature’s Touch milk in the bag," McHugh said.

(WFRV) – Due to what Kwik Trip described as a ‘substantial’ decline in demand, the company has decided to discontinue Nature’s Touch bagged milk.

Kwik Trip announced that it has decided to discontinue the sale of Nature’s Touch bagged milk across all stores. This will reportedly start in May 2024.

The release says that purchasing patterns indicated a ‘substantial’ decline in demand for the product when compared to milk sold in jugs. Bagged milk was reportedly been a part of Kwik Trip’s product line for over 40 years.

It was also mentioned that Kwik Trip’s Marketing Department contacted groups that had special promotional coupons for bagged milk.
