Emily Morra's two-run homer in the top of the fifth inning was a part of Mahwah's 16-hit barrage in a 14-2 win over Indian Hills in the semifinals of the Bergen County Tournament on Sunday.

MONTVALE – Cayla Nista: Base hit. Jessie Sandusky: Base hit. Emily Amell: Base hit. Annmarie Morra: Base hit. Those were the first four hitters of the game and their results for Mahwah in the semifinals of the Bergen County Softball Tournament on Sunday. The outcome of such a blazing start was an early two run lead that set the table for what was to come over the next five innings.

Third-seeded Mahwah sent seven hitters to the plate in the first inning, eight in the second, 10 in the fifth and eight more in the sixth in a 16-hit barrage that resulted in a 14-2, 6-inning victory over No. 2 Indian Hills. The win sends Mahwah into the county championship game for the first time in its history.

“From the get go we said we needed to go out there with high energy. We went out there with a lot of energy and it helped us in those first at bats. We came out with our bats ready to go, bats on fire,” said Morra, Mahwah’s senior catcher who will play next season at Utica College. “Every single girl on this team has worked towards the county of winning the county [championship] and every single girl on this team deserves this opportunity.”

And every single girl in the lineup contributed. Nista (4-for-5, 3 R, 3 RBI), Sandusky (2-for-5, 2 R, SB), Amell (2-for-4, 2 RBI), Annmarie Morra (3-for-4, 3 RBI) and Emily Swedelson (2-for-4, 2 R) all had multiple hit games. Erin Pryor had a hit and scored a run, Sydney Hesser was 1-for-4 with 2 RBI and a run scored and Emily Morra crushed a two-run homer and scored twice. The only Mahwah starter without a hit was sophomore Alexa Seidner, who instead drew two walks and scored twice.

Emily Amell pitched Mahwah into the Bergen County final for the first time in program history.

“We were confident coming in here, but I am going to be honest, I did not see [14-2] coming. We lost to [Indian Hills] in a really close game the last time we played them, so this was more than I could have imagined. Everyone was down when we lost to them, but we knew that if we got a chance to play them again that we would come back strong,” said Sandusky, Mahwah’s junior shortstop. “I knew this team was special, I know we have the potential to go all the way and I could not be prouder of this team.”

To win its first ever Bergen County championship, Mahwah is going to have to get past the hottest team in North Jersey and one of the most in-form squads in the state.

With its 9-5 win over top-seeded IHA in the first game of Saturday’s semifinal doubleheader at Pascack Hills High School, Ramapo (26-4) won its 16th straight game and punched its ticket to the championship round for the first time since the last of its three straight titles from 2006-08.

“A big part of this is that I honestly don’t think that there is another team that gets along as well as we do. That is really important because ultimately it is a team sport and we would be nowhere without each other,” said Sydney Samuel, the junior third baseman who hit one of Ramapo’s three home runs in the game. “There is just so much love on this team.”

Sydney Samuel hit one of three home runs for Ramapo, which raced out to an 8-1 lead.

Ramapo, the No. 4 seed, came out swinging. The Green Raiders got home runs from Savannah Ring, Samuel and Victoria Cunningham and blasted its way to an 8-1 lead through five-and-a-half innings over top-seeded IHA, which managed only one unearned run in the bottom of the first.

“We have had a lot of different kids step up. Our lineup is very balanced. Today we got home runs from our No. 1, No. 4 and No. 7 hitters,” said Ramapo head coach Darren White. ” It’s not easy to pitch to our lineup.”

Savannah Nowak had a three-run double as part of the Raiders’ four-run second inning that gave the Raiders the lead for good. Cunningham, just back from an ankle injury, hit a solo homer with one out in the third to make it 5-1. Ring’s blast came with one on and two out in the fifth to make it 7-1 and Samuel’s dinger came leading off the sixth to build what looked like an insurmountable seven-run cushion.

McKenna Lont, Ramapo’s junior right-hander gave up just one hit and did not walk a batter through five innings, but IHA got it together in the sixth when Cara Kochakian led off with a home run and, four hitters later, Jocelyn Moody hit a three-run shot to get the Blue Eagles back to within 8-4.

Savannah Nowak drove in three runs for Ramapo, which has now won 16 straight games.

Samuel’s sac fly in the top of the seventh pushed the Ramapo lead back to five runs, but it was anything but smooth sailing as Gianna Stirone drew a leadoff walk in the bottom of the seventh. Chelsea Lapp doubled in a run with one out to make it 9-5 and Kochakian worked the count to 3-1. A walk there and IHA could have had the tying run in the on deck circle, but Lont battled back for a strikeout and then a little pop up into the mitt of first baseman Macy Eglinton-Manner was the final out.

“Walking the first batter of the seventh inning was obviously not what I wanted to do, but I just tried to keep my focus on throwing strikes, getting groundballs, getting outs. When you adrenalin is this high you have to focus on your mechanics,” said Lont, who also went the distance on Saturday as Ramapo stayed alive in the North 1, Group 3 state sectional tournament heading into the semifinal round. “We are all just so excited to be in this position and we can’t wait for the next one.”

Ramapo and Mahwah will play for the Bergen County championship on Saturday at Mahwah High School, the predetermined site, although the day and start time may change depending on state tournament results this week.

Girls Softball Tryouts A Quick Overview

Girls softball tryouts for club and town travel teams are usually held during the summer months, most often in July. Players who are picked for a team usually commit to a full year of membership on that team, which includes year-round practice and games. Typically, NJ teams practice outside and play games during the fall, take about 1 month off during December, practice indoors for the winter months, and play games and practice outdoors again in the spring and early summer. Most teams allow partial payments in 3 stages prior to the fall, winter, and spring seasons. We recommend registering and attending several softball team tryouts. After all, the tryouts are usually free, and, you can learn a lot from attending these events. You can also network with other players, parents, and coaches. We also recommend researching each team before accepting an offer to join. Lookup their track record on Game Changer, research the team manager and head coach, look for team reviews on the Internet, and talk to parents and players already on that team. Sometimes tryouts are 1 day events, but more often, you will attend several sessions. Team managers will often ask players to practice with their teams to see if they are a good fit. Softball tryouts are usually advertised on the internet. So, tryout for a few teams and good luck!

Softball Club Teams in Northern New Jersey

Travel vs. club fastpitch softball.

Travel softball usually refers to town travel teams. These teams join softball leagues and travel from town-to-town playing each other. On a town travel team, most of the girls live in that town. The cost to join a town travel team is usually affordable, as the programs are designed to be cost-effective. Sometimes the teams will play a few tournaments on weekends. Club softball usually refers to teams that play only tournaments. On a club team, most of the girls live in different towns that are nearby geographically. Club tournaments are often far away. Sometimes, players need to stay in hotels to attend the events. Club teams typically practice year-round and the costs are much more expensive compared to town travel teams. Club teams are usually organized to bring girls together to play at a higher and more competitive level.

Two North Jersey softball teams have new coaches after rare in-season departures

bergen county travel softball

Two Top 25 North Jersey softball programs have new coaches after unusual early-season changes.

Bergenfield coach Nick Pampaloni stepped down a few days before the season started, and the team has been guided by assistants. Former Dumont coach Kendal George was approved as new head coach by the district’s Board of Education on Monday night.

DePaul coach Cyndi Covello retired from DePaul last week and was replaced by long-time assistant coach Frank Zampese.

Bergenfield is 2-1 and ranked No. 10 in the latest North Jersey Top 25 rankings .

“I loved coaching the girls and couldn’t have asked for a better group of girls these past five years,” Pampaloni said in a text message to NorthJersey.com.

Pampaloni went 66-43 in four years as head coach of the Bears. They reached the Bergen County Tournament quarterfinals last year and shared the Big North National championship with Old Tappan.

Bergenfield athletic director Darren Massey referred questions to the superintendent. It’s standard policy for the district not to comment on personnel matters.

George had great success at Dumont, winning 103 games in six seasons and lead the Huskies to four Big North National division titles until leaving after the 2022 season. She was planning on attending the Bears' game Tuesday against Indian Hills, and coaching Wednesday against Demarest.

“I am proud to take over a well-established Bergenfield team,” George said in a text message. “Everyone has been extremely welcoming and I am excited to get to know each of the players strengths in order to continue an already successful season.”

The Bears also play at Dumont on April 17.

“It will be a unique experience,” George said. “Many of the girls know each other, so I am sure they will all work hard in order to win.”

DePaul is ranked No. 13 in the latest rankings and is 3-2 after losing to Paramus Catholic on Monday.

In an email to NorthJersey.com, Covello called her decision a ‘personal choice,’ but did not wish to elaborate publicly on her move. DePaul athletic director John McKenna confirmed Covello’s departure.

Covello served as an assistant at DePaul under Sue Parler, who stepped down in 2022 after 432 wins and seven Passaic County titles . Covello was elevated to head coach in 2023 and went 15-11 last season. After not coaching anywhere in 2023, Parler is now an assistant coach at Wallington.

Softball: North Jersey Top 25 rankings heading into the 2024 season

Welcome to the official 2024 North Jersey preseason softball rankings. We did the unofficial ones back in June.

The last few years, Immaculate Heart Academy has basically gone wire-to-wire as No. 1. The Blue Eagles finished at No. 1 in 2023, 2022, 2021 and 2019 (remember, there was no softball season in 2020).

Spoiler Alert: They will start off as No. 1 in 2024.

Start the day smarter. Get all the news you need in your inbox each morning.

After that, it gets interesting. Ramapo was an out away from beating IHA in the Bergen County Tournament last year. Had that happened, a lot might look different. Ramapo is good again, are the Raiders good enough to topple IHA? Weehawken is still fantastic, but can the Indians get by Cedar Grove in Group 1?

Before the season starts, my favorite thing to do with the first set of rankings is spot a team (or two) where the vibes just feel right. Maybe they finished the year strong (like Saddle Brook) or bring back a young pitcher with some game (Northern Highlands), or maybe they’ve been hovering around .500 for a few years and this is the year they break through (Pascack Valley?).

Anyone can pick No. 1… and really, probably No. 2 (Ramsey). The fun is picking the rest.

Here’s are first official North Jersey Top 25 rankings of 2024:

1. Immaculate Heart Academy

Good pitching, best hitter in North Jersey since…I have to think about that, Gabby Shadek (Duke commitment). The Blue Eagles will be judged on two games: The Bergen County Tournament final and if/when they face Mount St. Dominic in the State Tournament. They’re No. 1 until someone else knocks them off.

I feel like Alana Chetaitis has been playing softball at Ramsey for 11 years. She’s a great player. The Rams attack every game with passion and a plan and succeed.

3. Weehawken

These are the glory days of Weehawken softball. Senior pitcher Savanna McHale (Binghamton) is the returning North Jersey Player of the Year.

The Green Raiders only graduated one starter and brought in a freshman or two. It’s all there.

5. Old Tappan

The Golden Knights bring back almost everyone from last year. Old Tappan always puts pressure on the other team’s defense by running and playing smart.

6. Bergenfield

This is the Bears best team since, well, last year. Eight seniors and pitcher Kayla Porter are back ready to roll.

7. Indian Hills

Audrey Amoruso went 16-6 for the Braves last year…and they were young. Experienced Indian Hills teams usually win championships.

8. Passaic Valley

I’m not underrating the Hornets this year. They have everything, including a rising star in pitcher Mia Aquino.

9. Rutherford

The Bulldogs are overdue for a sectional championship. Giana Yaniero can get them there with another good year in the circle.

10. Ridgefield Park

The Scarlets are in position to have another big year. They have pitching, speed and defense.

11. Pequannock

At the end of the season, Pequannock may barely be .500. That’s how good Morris County softball is, but Pequannock is still worthy of a high ranking. When she’s on, McKenzie Minervini is as good as anyone in the circle.

12. Northern Highlands

Playing in that tough division in the Big North, the Highlanders record may not look great at the end of the year either, but they’re legit.

13. Glen Rock

The Panthers will be the most experienced team in North Jersey with every starter back. They’ve become the dominant program in their division, can they get to the Bergen County semifinals? That should be the expectation.

14. St. Mary

Wait, St. Mary? When’s the last time they were in the poll? Maybe over a decade, but remember the Gaels picked up the bulk of the Immaculate Conception softball roster. It’s a new era.

15. Waldwick

Always good vibes around the Warriors. They bring back pitcher Hailey Zirpoli, but it’s always the same fight with Emerson and Park Ridge.

16. Wood-Ridge

If the Blue Devils can play above-average defense, there’s no reason why they can’t be dangerous in the section with Brooke Stellato pitching.

17. Ridgefield

After a league title and 14 wins, the Royals bring back just about every key contributor and are ready to take the next step.

18. Fair Lawn

I may have the Cutters too low. Can they outslug Passaic Valley in the Big North Independence division?

19. Bergen Tech

After a great run, the Knights are retooling a bit, but still have Nina Sarlo and other good bats.

20. Hawthorne

The Bears couldn’t get past Glen Rock and Pompton Lakes in the NJIC Colonial, but they have some big pieces back and a couple of freshmen who can help.

21. Wallington

Delilah Tabaka and the Panthers came on strong at the end of the season, but there’s not a lot of depth here.

22. Ridgewood

The Maroons surged at the end of last year and seem to have the athletes in the right place. Hey, Ridgewood is good in just about every spring sport, why should softball be any different?

23. West Milford

The Highlanders started 1-8 last year, but then started to show some signs they were figuring some things out. They have some sticks, can they start winning consistently?

24. Emerson

When Group 1 schools lose a standout pitcher to graduation like the Cavos did, usually there’s a dropoff, but I’m confident the core values established in the program will still work.

The T-Birds have hovered around .500 the last two years. They always have some girls who can hit. No one should take them lightly.
