DIY Hiking Guide To Skandagiri Hill

Ever wanted to start trekking but had trouble finding a solid amateur trek destination? Well, you’re now in luck, as Skandagiri is one of the more beginner-friendly must-do treks in Bengaluru, Karnataka. It is a popular trekking destination among the Bengalurians. The uphill journey on the challenging terrain of boulders and rocks ensconced within the surrounding scenic landscape at the hilltop makes it worth a hike.

Situated approximately 70 Km from Bangalore city, Skandagiri (also known as Kalavara Durga) is one of the Navadurgas around Bengaluru .

The trek also offers you a great opportunity to visit the Papagni Mutt, an ancient temple situated near the parking lot at the base of the hike. A 5-minute walk from here will take you to the checking gate, which also serves as the starting point of the hike.

Table of contents, skandagiri forest guard official contact, network availability, atm availability, languages spoken, parking availability, restroom facilities, best time to visit, things to do in skandagiri, hiking details, important things to remember, essential things to carry, frequently asked questions, related posts.

Check post at the trek starting point

Forest Guard, Srikala – 9686347164

Receptionist, Gurunatha – 8722571516

Keep in mind that it is mandatory that you are subject to a comprehensive check by the forest officials. The forest guards will check your bags and your online registration. Following this, they will appoint a reliable guide to accompany you on your trek.

Airtel. Jio and BSNL offer decent network and cellular coverage throughout the hike.

There are no ATMs available in close proximity to the entire trek trail. You can find the nearest ATMs in Chikkaballapur town, approximately 3 Km away.

Kannada is the only language spoken by forest officials and people in the region.

There are safe and sufficient parking spaces available near the ancient Papagni Mutt temple. You can also fill your water bottles here from the nearby water tank.

Parking fee – Rs.30 for a two-wheeler & Rs.50 for a four-wheeler.

You can find clean and well-maintained restrooms near the hike-starting gate.

Best time to visit Skandagiri hills

Skandagiri can be visited all year round. So the timing of your travel is dependent on what you wish to enjoy.

If you visit in the winter, the view will be enclosed in a blanket of mist, making the entire scenic landscape invisible. However, this does make for a very romantic journey as you walk between the clouds.

During the monsoon and the rainy season, the rocks and boulders are very slippery, making for a less-than-desirable trek.

During the summer, you get the best sunrise view(s), but you have to ensure that you return well in time to ward off the scorching heat.

How To Reach Skandagiri From Bengaluru?

The Chikkaballapur railway station (Station code: MKL, 2 Km) is the only nearby railway station. There are trains (not so frequent) from Majestic railway station, Bengaluru. The train journey is approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes.

If you have your own vehicle, search for Papagni Math or Skandagiri parking on Google Maps. It will lead you straight to the parking area of the trek. You can further navigate from there using the clearly visible signboards that lead you to the checking gate.

If you are dependent on public transport, you can hop on the frequent BMTC buses available from the Majestic bus terminus to Chikkaballapur. From Chikkaballapur, you can hire a tuk-tuk from the station to Kalavara Village (the starting place of the trek), or you can also walk for 3 Km.

Where To Eat

There are no restaurants or snack shops at the base or summit of the hike. Bring food or snacks, especially if you are planning for a sunrise 4 AM hike as no shops would be open at that hour.

After descending down, you can refresh yourself by buying coconut water, just after the forest checking gate. He accepts both online payments and cash. Restaurants can be found after a 15-minute ride from the base.

Hiking Route:

Hiking route marked on the rocks along the trail

The trek starts from the Kalavara village and ends at the Shiva temple on the hilltop, which is surrounded by fort ruins. The trek route is marked with red arrows, but owing to the weather and harsh environments, the trail markers are not visible at about 40% – 50% of the journey. However, this is only a mild inconvenience, as the trail is paved in a manner where there is no way to get lost in this hike, as the path guides you straight to the top.

At The Skandagiri Summit:

Temple at the Skandagiri summit

You can inspect the historically significant Lord Shiva temple with ‘Nandi.’  At the hilltop, you can also marvel at the 18th-century architecture that seems to still be very viable through the fort ruins. The Nandi hills and the other nearby settlements can be seen from the summit of the Skandagiri.

  • The use of plastics and smoking is strictly prohibited. It is your obligation as a tourist and a nature hiker that you do not litter. Collect and drop the waste at the base of the hill or take it back home and dispose of it properly.
  • Illegal trekking is strictly prohibited, and trespassers will be prosecuted.
  • As Skandagiri is popular, it is crowded on weekends and during public holidays. If you want to stay close to nature and enjoy the place with as little human interference as possible, go on weekdays.

Essential things to carry for the Skandagiri Trek

  • Ensure you carry at least 1L of water per person. You can also fill your water bottles near the water tank at the Papagni Mutt temple.
  • Ensure you carry sufficient snacks and energy bars, as there are no restaurants or food stalls at any part of the trail.
  • Carry all the necessary sun protection like a cap, sunscreen & sunglasses to ensure you can enjoy the hike without being drained by the Sun.
  • Carry a poncho or raincoat to ensure you are protected from sudden rains.
  • We highly stress that you use comfortable shoes that offer good support and have a proper grip for the trek.
  • If you are interested in going for a sunrise trek, then a Head torch needs to be added to your essentials.

Is Skandagiri a sunrise trek?

Skandagiri is a popular sunrise trek where people usually start hiking as early as 4 AM in the morning from the base. However, owing to safety concerns, night trekking is not allowed in Skandagiri.

Is a guide required for the Skandagiri trek?

Yes, as per the rules, a guide is mandatory for the Skandagiri trek. You will get your respective guide’s contact number when you register for the trek.

During the sunrise trek that we went on, each group was accompanied by a random guide. For the 7 AM slot, we noticed the guides did not tag along. But from our experiences, we are confident that the Skandagiri hike can be done independently.

Is camping allowed at Skandagiri?

No, overnight camping and bonfires are strictly prohibited in Skandagiri.

Are the Skandagiri and the Nandi hills the same?

Skandagiri and Nandi Hills are different hills situated close to each other. They are approximately 20 Km apart. One can view the Nandi hills from the summit of the Skandagiri.

Can kids do the Skandagiri trek?

Skandagiri is one of the most suitable beginner-friendly treks that can be comfortably hiked by kids above 12 years of age.

Skandagiri Trek: On the Other Side of Fear

Skandagiri Trek

Have you ever been afraid of being alone in an unfamiliar place you’d never been before? the response could be Yes or No.

What was it like to be alone in a lonely location, afraid and helpless? I’d never had anything like it till I went on the Skandagiri Trek by myself.

Skandagiri is a mountain 70 kilometers from Bangalore with a fortification at its summit. The peak is roughly 1350 meters above sea level.

Before You Begin Your Journey:

While reading several of the internet posts about this location, I noticed that night treks were prohibited, residents were unpleasant, and police would detain hikers, among other things. Even before we started the walk, it had become a terrifying prospect. The terror that these thoughts instilled in me made me reconsider going there for a hike.

But, for some reason, I convinced myself that all of my fears were unfounded, and I chose to go ahead and do it anyway.

The Adventure Begins:

I found a train from Bangalore to ChikBallapur because I’m usually on the lookout for a cheap excursion. It will just cost you 20/- to travel from Bangalore to Chik

●     Skandagiri is reached by train.

The train was scheduled to leave Bangalore city Junction at 08:30 a.m., but it arrived late. And the train, which was expected to arrive at ChikBallapur at 11 a.m., arrived at midnight.

I walked into town from the railway station and had my Bruch at a nearby nice restaurant

●     To get to the base from Chickballapur Town:

In broken Kannada, I asked a handful of people how to travel to Skandagiri, but I didn’t get any satisfactory answers. So, as is customary, I chose to rely solely on Google Maps.

According to maps, the base is 5 kilometers from the town, which takes an hour to walk. So, around 1:00 p.m., I began trekking towards Skandagiri’s base, following the charts. And I took a stroll down the village road, taking in the scenery without the glare of the sun.

●     Skandagiri is reached via the village.

I arrived at the bottom of the slope around 14:00 hours. I discovered the temple mentioned in previous blog articles, confirming that I had not taken any false turns.

According to Google maps, the peak was 3 kilometers from the base, which meant another hour of hiking.

From the base, the first view of Skandagiri

When I first started trekking, I was a little confused about where the trails were because Google maps didn’t indicate my specific location on the map. But, with no other option, I simply followed the path until I came across a few arrow marks on the rocks signifying the beginning of the trekking track.

On the rocks, there were similar markings.

There was no one else in the area. It was two o’clock in the afternoon. The sun shone brightly and to its full extent. There was only a sliver of a breeze to provide some relief. But, sooner or later, some clouds arrived to assist, and things began to improve.

view of Skandagiri

The hiking trail was indicated. As a result, it wasn’t difficult to follow. When I first started hiking, I even turned off Google Maps.

●     Skandagiri’s Trails

After a long trek, I was able to glimpse a portion of the stronghold.

●     The first sighting of the SkandaGiri fort wall.

It was a fraction of an hour. So I thought I was moving quickly. However, as I approached that area of the stronghold, I noticed another similar fortress a little higher up. In actuality, they were a series of fort walls, stacked one on top of the other at various levels.

●     There are no shortcuts in life, and there are none in trekking! :

I considered taking shortcuts when I spotted the fort walls. I decided to walk towards the fort walls because the straight line between them was the shortest distance between them

●     The Pursuit of Happiness Is…:

Finding plastic waste thrown aside by someone can be a source of joy (even though it is a sad scene)

Conclusion:

To Conclude, The trekking route provides some spectacular views, so taking breaks to enjoy the scenery is always recommended. Don’t miss the vantage points from which you can get awe-inspiring views of the lush green landscape.

However, the trek is tricky in the monsoon as the trail is slippery.

A summer trek to Skandagiri is possible if you have the stamina to endure South India's treacherous summer heat. Skandagiri is famous for its spectacular sunrise views. You can also go on the Skandagiri sunrise trek which can be done throughout the year, except during heavy monsoon.

Skandagiri Trek: The Do’s and Don’ts Guide for Karnataka Hikers

Skandagiri, also known as Kalavara Durga, is a popular trekking destination in the state of Karnataka, India. Situated approximately 70 kilometers from Bangalore, this picturesque hill fort offers breathtaking views and an exhilarating trekking experience for outdoor enthusiasts. To ensure a safe and enjoyable outing, it is essential to follow certain guidelines. Here is a comprehensive list of do’s and don’ts for hikers planning to conquer Skandagiri:

Do’s:

1. Plan Your Trek: Before embarking on the Skandagiri trek, make sure to plan your trip well in advance. Check the weather conditions, obtain the necessary permits if required, and gather all the information about the route and trekking trails.

2. Start Early: Begin your trek early in the morning to witness the stunning sunrise from the hilltop. It is not only a mesmerizing sight but also ensures that you complete the trek before the sun gets too hot.

3. Carry Essential Supplies: Pack enough water, food, and energy bars to keep you hydrated and energized throughout the trek. Also, carry a first-aid kit, sunscreen, a map or guidebook, and any other necessary hiking gear.

4. Wear Suitable Clothing: Dress in comfortable and lightweight clothing that provides flexibility and allows for easy movement. Opt for sturdy trekking shoes with good grip to navigate the rocky terrains.

5. Stay in a Group: The Skandagiri trek is best enjoyed with a group of fellow trekkers. Hiking in a group not only adds to the fun but also ensures safety in case of any unforeseen circumstances.

6. Follow the Trail: Stick to the marked trails and avoid venturing into unknown paths. This will minimize the risk of getting lost and help preserve the natural surroundings.

7. Respect the Environment: Ensure that you leave no trace behind. Do not litter or harm the flora and fauna of Skandagiri. Preserve the natural beauty of the place by carrying your trash back with you.

Don’ts:

1. Avoid Trekking Alone: It is not advisable to embark on the Skandagiri trek alone, especially if you are a beginner or unfamiliar with the region. Always trek with a group or under the guidance of experienced hikers.

2. Don’t Overexert Yourself: Pace yourself and take regular breaks during the ascent to prevent exhaustion. Listen to your body and know your limits. Pushing yourself too hard can lead to injuries and spoil the trekking experience.

3. Stay Away from Restricted Areas: Skandagiri Fort is a protected archaeological site, and certain areas might be off-limits to trekkers. Respect the signage and avoid venturing into prohibited zones to ensure your safety and preserve the historical significance of the site.

4. Don’t Disturb the Wildlife: Skandagiri is home to various species of flora and fauna. Avoid making loud noises, chasing animals, or damaging their habitats. Observe and appreciate the wildlife from a distance without causing any harm.

5. Avoid Alcohol and Drugs: Consumption of alcohol or any illegal substances is strictly prohibited during the trekking adventure. Such substances impair judgment and pose a risk to both your safety and that of fellow trekkers.

By adhering to these do’s and don’ts, you can have a remarkable and responsible trekking experience at Skandagiri. Enjoy the stunning views, soak in the serenity, and cherish the memories of this magnificent trekking escapade in Karnataka.

Myself and few of my friends went to Skandagiri in October and we were blocked by the village people as there was some incident.,.. I would like to know is the trekking allowed now in skandagiri??

Skandagiri trek has always been one of the most controversial treks near Bangalore. Most of the times, people make it and many a times, people are also unable to make it. Officially, Skandagiri trek is banned. The reason being a lot of Incidents because it is one of the favorite points for people having suicidal tendencies. I hope you are getting me what am I trying to say here. It purely depends on our luck. However, there are also and in fact a lot of trekking places around Bangalore just like skandagiri. Here is the link:

We went to skandagiri on the 3rd oct 2015(Saturday), parked our vehicle in the Chikkaballapur town and took autos to the foothills. 5 of us left from bangalore it took us 2hrs from hennur via the route you suggested. I followed your reviews and found it very useful so i thought we’ll go.

The ride was amazing, but it started pouring once we reached chikballapur. Due to the rain and since we reached at 10pm the autos demanded 200 rupees for a one way fare. But seeing no other way to reach the destination we reluctantly took two autos.

The route from the town was pitch black as there was a power cut in the town, the road and the surrounding region was also not visible. Only for a second when the lighting struck could we see the surrounding in a flash. The ride was scary as the roads we flooded and very narrow, the auto driver claimed to have taken us on a route through the village which was one of the three route suggested on google maps.

1km before papagni math one person came with a flashlight and blocked the road, he claimed to be a forest official and prevented us from going any further. He was pretty strict and said that all treks are cancelled even during the day as a leopard had attacked cattle in the surrounding region. This seemed too fake, but we had to listen, we tried persuading him but he refused.

With no other option we had to return disappointed. Since we took the same auto he demanded us another 200 to go back, or else drop us there. But at 10:45 stranded in a place none of us knew we paid 300 to each auto for both ways.

This seemed difficult to believe as so many other people have trekked before and enjoyed the trek and the sunrise. I thought this whole experience was a scam to loot the tourists. Easy money for both parties the auto guy could have had a agreement with the official. But i don’t want to be judgemental about the proceeding but would take it as a learning experience. Can you please let me know if they have actually banned trekking to the hills or these guys are making a business giving us false information.

Yes you can go for this trek throughout the year but best time to go for the trek is after monsoon and in winter. Due to unfortunate incident at skandagiri, now-a-days police camp there to prevent people from going for the night trek.

However people still got there.

The view from the top is truly rewarding. If you are lucky, then you witness a sheath of clouds floating under the hilltop . You also get a glimpse of a lake with the hills in the background.

Wait at the top for the sun to rise from the mountains covered with clouds. The mesmeric view is worth the wait. Enjoy the moment, click some memorable snapshots before heading back to the base. It takes around 1.5 hours to get down.
