Can I travel to Thailand? Entry requirements from the UK explained

By Abigail Malbon

Ko Samui Surat Thani province Thailand

Travel to Thailand from the UK is allowed, but what are the Covid rules when flying to the destination? Here’s what you need to know about holidays to Thailand.

What are the entry requirements for Thailand?

In January 2023, the Thai government reintroduced some requirements for international travellers after China reopened its borders for the first time since 2020. These include all airline passengers over 18 providing proof of full vaccination or proof of Covid-19 recovery in the past six months (180 days). Those who are exempt from vaccination must provide proof from a doctor.

Additionally, any travellers who are visiting from a country that may prohibit them returning home in the case of a positive Coronavirus test occurring while in Thailand must have insurance covering at least $10,000 of health care while in the country.

Thai passport holders and those transiting through Thailand en-route to another country are exempt from these checks.

For more information and updated rules, visit the UK government website before travelling. We also recommend ensuring you have valid travel insurance with Covid cover before taking any trips.

Can I travel to Thailand from the UK, and back again?

Yes. Since 18 March 2022, there are no Covid travel rules in the UK, which means that those returning from Thailand do not need to test, quarantine or fill in a passenger locator form , regardless of their vaccination status. The UK government also stopped managing any quarantine hotels at the end of March.

Travel time from London to Bangkok Thailand

How long does it really take to fly from London to Bangkok Thailand? Here's a sample itinerary for a commercial flight plan. If you want to know the total travel time to reach Bangkok Thailand, you need to include time at the airports. Eventually, you'll be able to customize this itinerary to select other nearby airports and choose your preferred airline.

Tuesday, 4:51 pm :  start in London drive for about 1 hour most airlines recommend you get to the airport at least 90 minutes before your flight, so arrive by 7:00 pm at the latest

6:35 pm :  get your boarding pass and go through TSA security allow enough time for long security lines during busy travel seasons or holidays, and prepare for the wait time

7:35 pm :  arrive at the gate once you're ready to board, you can get something to eat in the airport or just relax near the gate

8:05 pm :  prepare for boarding check your boarding pass for your group number or listen to the gate agent as they announce boarding, some airlines require you to be in the boarding area 10-15 minutes before departure or risk losing your seat

8:20 pm :  board British Airways Plc flight you can scroll down to view other airlines that fly this route

8:30 pm :  this is your scheduled departure time but remember flights can be delayed, so take that into account it takes the plane an average of 15 minutes to taxi to the runway

8:45 pm :  wheels up! take-off from LGW fly for about 12.5 hours in the air

Wednesday, 4:07 pm (local time) :   Don Mueang International (DMK) Bangkok Thailand is 7 hours ahead of London so the time in London is actually 9:07 am you actually arrive the day after you left taxi on the runway for an average of 15 minutes to the gate

4:22 pm (local time) :  arrive at the gate at DMK deboard the plane, and claim any baggage if you're renting a car, check if you need to take a shuttle to car rental agency, otherwise you can ride in a cab, limo, or Uber for about 39 minutes to your destination

5:00 pm (local time) :  arrive in Bangkok Thailand

Now finally, let's look at an example flight from LGW to DMK and figure out how long it would take to fly including take-off and landing, and time to taxi on the runway.

So now we can finally get an idea of the total travel time from London to Bangkok Thailand including time spent getting to/from the airports, an estimated wait time of 2 hours at the airport for TSA security lines and waiting at the gate, and the actual flight itself.

Total travel time: 16 hours

How far is Bangkok Thailand from London? Here's the quick answer if you have a private jet and you can fly in the fastest possible straight line.

Flight distance: 5,929 miles or 9543 km

Flight time: 12 hours, 22 minutes

Compare this to a whole day of commercial travel with the airports and waiting in line for security, which ends up taking a total of 17 hours, 9 minutes .

Flying private is roughly 1.4x faster , and saves you about 5 hours in your total travel time.

Because of the curvature of the Earth, the shortest distance is actually the "great circle" distance, or "as the crow flies" which is calculated using an iterative Vincenty formula. For a long distance, this appears as a curve on the map, and this is often the route that commercial airlines will take so it's a good estimate of the frequent flyer miles you'll accumulate as well.

This is a fairly long flight, so unless you have a Gulfstream G650 or your own Boeing or Airbus, you might be booking a commercial flight. In that case, your travel time would really need to include how many minutes to get to your local airport, wait for security, board and taxi on the runway, land at the other airport, and get to your destination. The flight itinerary at the top of the page takes into account all these factors to get a more accurate estimate of your actual flight time .

The most common route is LGW to DMK, so that's what we used in the sample itinerary. However, you may want to explore travel alternatives, you could try one of these routes:

  • LHR to BKK London Heathrow to Suvarnabhumi International
  • LHR to DMK London Heathrow to Don Mueang International
  • LTN to BKK London Luton to Suvarnabhumi International
  • LTN to DMK London Luton to Don Mueang International
  • STN to BKK London Stansted to Suvarnabhumi International
  • STN to DMK London Stansted to Don Mueang International
  • LGW to BKK London Gatwick to Suvarnabhumi International
  • LGW to DMK London Gatwick to Don Mueang International
  • BQH to BKK Biggin Hill to Suvarnabhumi International
  • BQH to DMK Biggin Hill to Don Mueang International
  • LCY to BKK London City to Suvarnabhumi International
  • LCY to DMK London City to Don Mueang International

We picked British Airways Plc for your main flight, but there are other airlines that you should check if you're looking for the cheapest flight, or you need a different schedule. Check the websites of these airlines:

Top tips for finding cheap flights to Thailand

  • Enter your preferred departure airport and travel dates into the search form above to unlock the latest Thailand flight deals.
  • If you're looking to find cheap flights to Thailand from the UK, consider booking an indirect flight. Qatar Airways offers one that stops over at Manama Bahrain Airport (BAH) from London Heathrow (LHR), and you can fly from Edinburgh (EDI) via Amsterdam (AMS) on KLM, for instance.
  • You can find cheap flights to Thailand from many UK cities, including London (LON), Manchester (MAN), Edinburgh, Glasgow (GLA), and Birmingham. So no matter where you are in the country, you'll find an airport close by to get to Thailand.
  • The public transport can be erratic or non-existent in some areas of Thailand, so consider adding a hire car when booking your ticket. You can sometimes get package discounts, which is another way to find cheap flights to Thailand.
  • Thailand has two international airports in Bangkok – Don Mueang International Airport (DMK) and Suvarnabhumi International Airport (BKK) – and as these are located in the centre of the country, they provide a good starting point to explore north and south. If you wish to go to the north of the country, consider booking a flight to Chiang Mai International Airport (CNX), while if you would like to visit the south, then Phuket International Airport (HKT) is a good option.
  • Visitors who would like to do some island hopping while in Thailand should consider booking a flight into Krabi Airport (KBV). Krabi is an ideal place to base yourself in order to visit the many islands in the area and is well-connected with flights to and from Bangkok airports.
  • If you are looking at flights to Thailand in order to visit some of the attractions in the north-east of the country on the border with Laos, why not think about booking a connecting flight from Bangkok to Udon Thani International Airport (UTH), which serves as a hub for this region. Udon Thani International Airport only operates domestic flights, so you will need to fly in from one of the main airports in Bangkok or Chiang Mai.
  • The U-Tapao Rayong Pattaya International Airport (UTP) in the Rayong province is a good airport to consider flying into if you want to spend your holiday on the island of Kho Samet. You will need to book a connecting flight from Bangkok or Phuket to Rayong or in the high season, Tui Airways operates direct flights from Birmingham Airport (BHX), London Gatwick (LGW) and Manchester Airport (MAN) to U-Tapao Rayong Pattaya International Airport.
  • The best way to buy foreign currency for your trip to Thailand is to take some GBP or USD cash with you and change it at a bureau du change. These money exchange counters will yield better rates than the ATMs and can be found in the airports.

Top 5 airlines flying to Thailand

It was a pleasant fly with Eva Air from NYC to Taipei. The crew were friendly and the food was exceeded my expectation.

Boarding is fast and easy for economy class, food was ok baggage policies are good

The flight went well. Everything good. Boarding. Meal service. Snack (crackers) & Drinks. Entertainment was good as I watch 4 movies. The need to have milk for hot black tea though as coffee creamer just never makes tea taste nice.

Experience was good. Check-in at airport was slower than norm.

seamless check in/ friendly staff, food is good, always love flying Eva Air

Eva is one of the top airlines in Asia... but often are over priced. Finally found a reasonable rate.

Polite hard working crew. No complaints really. Meals were not to my liking.

Everything was fantastic! It was a short flight but the crew really went above and beyond to make it a great flight. I felt cared for with EVA.

This was only a short flight, but it had a full hot in-flight meal service. I was very impressed by the skills of the flight attendants in getting the meals out and collecting the trays back without any problems, in double quick time. The meal I had was also very tasty.

I enjoyed the flight it was long but very friendly crew

Absolutely terrible delays for 3 hours changed seats after we paid an upgrade on both legs. It appears it’s up to us to request a refund after they down graded our seat. Never again !!

Good but needs to improve cleanliness Coffee serve cold Needs to raise standard serving food Otherwise good

Staff were friendly, and provided great service. The food was plentiful and delicious. Food could have been hotter.

They had superb boarding (started an hour before flight time). Timely pushback from them gate and an early arrival. Flight and service was very comfortable. I wanted to move my flight to an earlier one, only thing was there was no one at emirates in Heathrow to help. Had to call the call the center and pay to change. There were ample seats on the flight though

More leg room and comfortable seats at least for long flights

Newly reconfigured 380 I assume. Has a new ife with usb c ports and Bluetooth connections

Lovely experience. I feel like travelling in Emirates.. The flights are always superb.Vegan food served was really good..

On both legs of my trips (Jhb - Dxb and Dxb - Jhb) the entertainment system did not work.

service was slow, to get water had to press 4-5 times , crew come near but never notice, serving those they like to serve, hope this crew can improve their attentive ness and serve everyone respectfully.

We had a connecting flight which is got delayed they didn’t transfer me to another flight and up I have to by 3 new tickets and I have to pay extra luggage fees cost me rs 100000

The transfer from Domestic and International was a bit confusing but I am easily confused. I did not eat any food, but the food on the other leg was decent. It was nice they turned the lights off on the night flight. The plane was in good shape, but was a little cramped in economy and I am small. They gave me a customs form to fill out and nobody looked at it as I went through customs. Not a bad flight.

We are satisfied with the cabin crew serviceand the quality of meals served.

Lunch Food was tasteful and had variety. Seat was comfortable. However, when I was reserving my seats during booking, the seat configuration showed was 3-3-3, but when I boarded it was a 2-4-2 configuration? Also during booking, I had also bought travel insurance together with my TG booking. However there was no confirmation of my purchase from Allianz and TG. After several emails with TG contact, sales, reservation and Allianz was i able to confirm my insurance purchase. When the policy was issued, the birth dates of me and my wife were wrongly stated and I had to go through another round of emails with Allianz to get it corrected. Otherwise any claims would be void! It was indeed not a very good booking experience!

Check in was a disaster. 90 minutes and only 2 economy check in desks open. Had to rush to catch the flight.

I couldnt go on this flight and lost all my money over 1,000 UK Pounds as my visa to Myanmar was not accepted :(

Thai Airways is one of the best airlines in the business. Looking forward to fly again with them.

After going back and forth with the airline, they never reimbursed the airline tickets. Went around asking multiple people how to get reimbursed and kept getting put back, not satisfied with their customer service.

No working jet bridge to deplane, with priority customers deplaning last. Followed by bus to terminal.

Efficient like all the other flights with them. An outstanding budget airline!

Excellent service. departed on time, and arrived ahead of schedule. The whole restrictions around no food/drink is a bit weird even with Covid. Also, no mobiles and iPad use during takeoff and landing is very 2006!

I staff or crew they were very friendly and humbly, they done theirs service very well, I appreciate them and thank you to the company or Qatar 🇶🇦 Government for providing as good service in their flight ,once again, thank you 😊 🙏 😀 😉 👍

To many ads. 3 or 4 between each movie. All repetitive, all related to Doha which I was just passing thru.

I had already opted for Vegan food before 2 months yet they say we have no record for it,

Crews are very rude and unhelpful. Cramped seats in economy. Foods are useless

Terrible. The website insisted that I wasn't logging in correctly to confirm my flight. It also wouldn't let me register as a member. I was unable to get a boarding pass until 4 hours before the flight so I couldn't get through security and had to wait. It was unlike anything I've experienced in decades.

Terrible airlines - suffered entire flight due to food poisoning from stale food

They ran out of some of the popular food items. 😞

The overall experience for the price we paid was mediocre. Nothing outstanding! Check in process was standard. Flight attendants could have been more well mannered. I found it rude when the attendant nudged me with the snack box to grab my attention when not looking. She could have said ,’excuse me’ instead. My son’s in flight entertainment was not working. The food was not great either. The snack options were not so great with kids in mind. Overall, might not travel qatar again.

Lovely aircraft and I flight entertainment. Good leg room. Full flight crew struggled a bit

Ordinary Indian food... Not great. Limited movie and TV selection

The staff was very nice and polite but it was very very hot and no ways to have some fresh air. It would be nice to have more time to sleep since it was a night flight

The staff was kind and polite, but it was very very hot and no ways to have some fresh air.it would be also be nice to have more time to sleep, since it was a night flight

I WOULD ADVISE NOT TO BOOK YOUR FLIGHT ON KAYAK. THEY SHOW BETTER FARES AND AFTER I BOOKED MINE, I FIND OUT THAT IT DID NOT INCLUDE LUGGAGE. i HAD TO PAY $800 TO CHECK IN MY BAGS.

Entertainment did not work from flight from Abu Dhabi to Kolkata. Emirates has a much better flight in that sector.

1.Aircraft Comfort: The aircraft type was quite small with non-reclining, cramped seats that significantly lacked comfort. 2.In-flight Entertainment: There was no provision of in-flight entertainment screens or Wi-Fi for the majority of the flight. 3.Boarding Process at New Abu Dhabi Airport: Despite the move to a new airport, which promised enhanced experiences, the use of buses instead of jet bridges did not meet expectations, causing inconvenience. 4.Gate Change Communication: A last-minute gate change was poorly communicated, resulting in a long and difficult walk.

Very unfriendly team. It was very difficult to get a cup of coffee. Legroom was extremely small. Old, dilapidated plane.

Crew was good, boarding mediocre, food choices were limited, seating was not comfortable

Sits are very uncomfortable and food quality should be improved. Alcohol you have to ask and wait for more then 1/2 hrs. Don’t feel like to travel in Etihad. It was 1st time we traveled in Etihad now we decided we don’t want to travel in Etihad.

Very very bad service very tight seats never ever flying with Etihad again

It feels like the seat did not have any cushion just plywood. The seats are so compact that I could not even move at all and I am slim. Just imagine someone else. Singapore Air and Emirates are far far better than this. Do not even travel for free. For a 12 hour flight sitting on a plywood is horrible experience and on top of that the person at checking counter at NY was worst and rude. Plus they charge arms and leg for everything. I think they would also start charging for belts and oxygen also soon. First and last time flying with Ethiad.

Can I travel to Thailand from UK? Entry requirements, Covid tests and quarantine rules as it leaves red list

Thailand is open for visitors - and while restrictions mean travelling to the tropical kingdom is still trickier than for most destinations, there are still great deals to be had.

travel time uk to thailand

Thailand is one of 47 countries that have been cut from the Government’s red list, meaning that travellers returning from the popular winter sun destination will no longer be subject to 10 nights of hotel quarantine.

The change, announced yesterday evening by Transport Secretary Grant Shapps, opens up the country to travel for UK residents for the first time since the start of the pandemic.

However, there are still obstacles to consider when booking a break to the tropical kingdom.

Can I go on a quarantine-free holiday to Thailand?

Yes, but your first seven days must be spent in one of four pilot “sandbox” regions that are now open to inbound tourism before you are free to see the rest of the country.

UK holidaymakers must be fully vaccinated, stay in a specially accredited “SHA+” hotel and take two PCR tests, on day zero to one and on day six to seven.

Under-18s are exempt from proof of vaccination if travelling with parents or guardians, but children aged seven to 17 must take both PCR tests, and saliva tests are mandatory for babies and children below seven.

There are four pilot destinations which holidaymakers are free to travel to directly from their country of origin as part of the “Sandbox” programme, with more planned for later ahead of a full reopening of the country to tourism. The current list is a as follows:

  • Surat Thani (Ko Samui, Ko Pha-ngan, and Ko Tao only)
  • Phang-Nga (Khao Lak and Ko Yao only until 1 November when all of Phang-Nga will be open)
  • Krabi (Ko Phi Phi, Ko Ngai and Railay Beach only)

There is also an extensive list of required documentation. You will need:

  • A certificate of entry from ceothailand.mfa.go.th
  • Confirmed return flights
  • SHA+ approved hotel booking for the first seven days
  • Health insurance which covers a minimum of $100,000 for duration of stay
  • Proof of vaccination (for all travellers aged 18 or over)

What must vaccinated travellers do upon arrival in Thailand?

  • PCR test upon arrival.
  • Wait at hotel for result. After negative result is received, you are free to leave accommodation and enjoy destination for seven days.
  • PCR test on day seven or eight (total cost for two mandatory tests needed in Thailand is between £50 to £100pp).
  • After day seven, you are free to visit the rest of Thailand.

When will the rest of Thailand, including Bangkok, open up to direct inbound travel?

The Thai government has set out a four-stage reopening plan, with the current stage being called the Pilot Phase. Bangkok will be open for direct travel in the next phase, which will be gradually rolled out at some point in November, with the exact dates yet to be announced.

The full list of destinations in the next three phases are as follows:

Phase 1 At some point in November 10 more destinations will be opened up to inbound travel. These include: all areas of Bangkok, Krabi and Phang-Nga, and designated areas in Buri Ram (Mueang), Chiang Mai (Mueang, Mae Rim, Mae Taeng, and Doi Tao), Chon Buri (Pattaya, Bang Lamung, Na Jomtien, and Sattahip), Loei (Chiang Khan), Phetchaburi (Cha-Am), Prachuap Khiri Khan (Hua Hin), and Ranong (Ko Phayam).

Phase 2 At some point in December, 20 more provinces will be opened up. These are: Ayutthaya, Chiang Rai, Khon Kaen, Lamphun, Mae Hong Son, Nakhon Ratchasima, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Narathiwat, Nong Khai, Pathum Thani, Phatthalung, Phetchabun, Phrae, Rayong, Samut Prakan, Songkhla, Sukhothai, Trang, Trat, and Yala.

Phase 3 From 2022 all other provinces will be opened including: Bueng Kan, Chanthaburi, Kanchanaburi, Mukdahan, Nakhon Phanom, Nan, Ratchaburi, Sa Kaeo, Satun, Surin, Tak, Ubon Ratchathani, and Udon Thani.

Passport Validity / Visas

The first thing to check before planning to travel to Thailand is the validity of your passport. International travel requires that your passport is not expiring within six months of your travel date. If you have less than six months left on your passport, you cannot enter Thailand.

If you are planning to travel in the future, check your passport early so you know if you need to apply for a new one or not. It is best to check with your local embassy about how long it will take to receive your new passport. As people look to travel again, passport departments are swamped with new applications and this is causing a backlog in many countries.

There are several visas available to foreigners who are planning to visit Thailand. The visa you need will depend on where you are from, your purpose of travel, and how long you intend to stay.

Visa Exemption

A foreign visitor may enter Thailand under the Visa Exemption Program . Nationalities under the Visa Exemption Program may enter Thailand without a visa from a Thai Embassy or Consulate.

Upon arriving in Thailand, most nationalities who are part of the Visa Exemption Program may stay for up to 30 days. Certain nationalities can arrive as part of this program, but for a shorter time. It is best to check the country exemption list and confirm how long you can visit Thailand without needing to apply for a Visa.

Tourists arriving under visa exemption are eligible to extend their stay for up to a further 30 days by visiting a local Thai Immigration Office. The cost to extend is approximately 2000 baht.

There is often confusion about Visa Exemption and “Visa on Arrival”. Visa on Arrival is a 15-day visa for travelers from India,  China, and 16 other countries. If you do not find your country on the Visa Exemption list, it is best to check the Visa on Arrival list.

There are some important things to note for Visa on Arrival:

  • A passport must be valid for at least 30 days.
  • The purpose of the visit is strictly tourist.
  • A visitor must show an address in Thailand where they will be staying.
  • A traveler must have a confirmed return flight.
  • Must show proof of funds to the value of 10,000 baht per person or 20,000 baht for a family.
  • A fee of 2000 baht is paid on arrival. The fee must be paid in cash and in Thai baht.

Tourist Visa and Special Tourist Visa (STV)

Foreigners may also apply for a Tourist Visa from a Thai embassy or consulate. There is the normal 60-day tourist visa that can be extended for additional 30 days, or the 90-day Special Tourist Visa (STV), which can be extended for 90 days twice at a local immigration office. There are certain requirements needed for the STV, but it allows a visitor to potentially stay in Thailand for 9 months. The Special Tourist Visa is currently scheduled to halt applications in September.

Contact your local Thai Embassy to verify what documents are needed to complete the process. When your visa is approved, the Embassy will place a sticker on your passport, so allow time for potential postage.

For those entering Thailand for a different purpose of stay, they need to obtain a Thai visa from their local Thai Embassy or Consulate prior to coming to Thailand.

Non-Immigrant Visa

Foreigners may apply for a wide range of long-term non-immigrant visas:

  • Non-immigrant B Visa – for conducting business or employment
  • Non-immigrant O visa – for visiting Thai spouse and family
  • Non-immigrant ED visa – for students of recognized institutions in Thailand and their Parents or Legal guardian
  • Non-immigrant O retirement visa – for those who wish to retire in Thailand
  • Non-immigrant OA and OX visa – for those who wish to obtain a Thailand retirement visa for a long stay (it differs from type O visa)

The above visas can be organized at a local Thai Embassy or Consulate. The paperwork can be quite involved, but there are companies that can help.

Siam Legal International is a reputable company in Thailand that has offered visa assistance to foreign visitors for years. They are well versed in Thai immigration policies and processes. If you would like to streamline your long-term stay in Thailand, it is worth contacting them.

Proof of Vaccine or Testing

How a visitor enters Thailand will still depend on their vaccination status.

Vaccinated Travelers

Vaccinated travelers do not need to provide proof of vaccination to Thai authorities before arriving. A vaccinated traveler will need to have a copy of their vaccination certificate either printed or on a digital device and be able to present it if asked.

Thailand does not require visitors to have had a third booster shot. 2 shots (1 shot for Jansen) is considered fully vaccinated and accepted.

Unvaccinated Travelers

Unvaccinated travelers will need to complete an RT-PCR test or Professional Antigen Test (Pro-ATK) within 72 hours before boarding a flight in their departure country. They will need to have a copy of the test result and be able to present it if asked.

The RT-PCR and Pro-ATK test must be completed by a medical professional and a test report received. The home ATK (RAT) self-test is not acceptable for entering Thailand.

Vaccination and Testing for Children

The testing requirement for children under 18 depends on the vaccination status of their parents. Children traveling with vaccinated parents do not need to complete any RT-PCR or Pro-ATK test before entering Thailand. Children traveling with unvaccinated parents will need to complete the same test as their parents within 72 hours of departing their home country.

It is important to note that many airlines are still asking for proof of vaccination or a Covid test before boarding flights. If you cannot produce one of these documents, you might not board the flight.

Though foreigners no longer need to provide evidence of testing or vaccination prior to arriving in Thailand, they are still required. Thai authorities are conducting random checks of international passengers and if a vaccination certificate or test result cannot be shown, a visitor will not be allowed to enter Thailand.

Insurance has become a dirty word during Covid. Seasoned travelers have always understood the importance of having comprehensive Travel Insurance when traveling abroad. Travel insurance protected travelers from unexpected incidents like:

  • Medical emergencies
  • Personal injury & accidents
  • Missed or delayed flights
  • Damage to belongings
  • Lost luggage

It was one of those things that people hoped they would never need but regretted not having when needed.

During the Pandemic, proof of insurance became mandatory when visiting countries like Thailand. Over time, people stopped referring to insurance as “Travel Insurance” and always referred to it as “Covid Insurance”. Because you had to have it, it was another hoop to jump through.

The good news is that you no longer need to provide proof of “Covid Insurance” to enter Thailand. But it is recommended because all the things listed above can still happen, and Covid has not disappeared completely.

Foreign visitors are not eligible for free medical care in Thailand if something should happen. Whether it be an accident or personal injury, if a visitor needs medical help, or has a canceled flight, they will need to cover any expenses themselves. Depending on the severity, this could be hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars.

Buying good Travel Insurance shouldn’t break the bank. Protecting yourself is cheaper than medical bills, new flights, and replacing lost luggage.

You can buy Travel Insurance from many companies. But if you are looking for coverage that is designed for Thailand, is trusted by Thai authorities and medical institutions, and offers a helpline with people who speak the local language and know the country’s procedures, it is worth checking out AXA Thailand .

Their policies are well priced, straightforward, offer many benefits to its customers, and can be approved in minutes.

Hotel and Proof of Address Updates

Previously, a foreign visitor would complete an Arrival Card (TM6) before entering Thailand. This requirement has been temporarily removed as part of a new initiative by the Thai government.

A visitor no longer needs to provide proof of a hotel booking before departing their country, but will still need to provide an address when passing through Passport Control in Thailand. This address can be a hotel, home, or friend’s address.

This is especially true with people arriving on a pre-approved visa from a Thai Embassy or Consulate.

From July 1, travelers are no longer required to book a SHA+ hotel and undergo an RT-PCR test on arrival. Most hotels have removed their SHA+ quarantine packages, but you will still see the SHA+ badge displayed on hotels.

It is recommended to browse hotels in Thailand on Agoda.com before arriving as it is easier to organize transport to your first night’s rest if pre-booked.

Thailand Pass

From July 1st, 2022, foreign travelers no longer need to apply for a Thailand Pass before entering Thailand. The system is still in place but is now a platform where visitors can notify the Thai authorities and medical facilities if they are diagnosed positive for Covid during their stay.

If you need to access the Thailand Pass system while in Thailand, please visit https://tp.consular.go.th/ and register by filling in your personal details on the Thailand Pass registration page.

International Arrivals

Travelers do not need to provide any proof of flights before leaving their home country.

There is a lot of discussion about whether a return flight needs to be booked when entering Thailand. Technically, all visitors should have a return flight booked. However, you will not always be asked to present evidence of a return flight.

If a visitor is entering Thailand with a pre-approved visa, or Visa on Arrival, they will often be asked to present details of their exit flight. Sometimes a visitor did not have a return flight and had to book a flight on the spot before being processed through Passport Control. To avoid this, it is best to book an exit flight that can be changed. You can always change your plans once in Thailand.

Domestic flights

There are no longer any restrictions on domestic flights and travel. When entering Thailand at an international terminal, a traveler is free to transit to a domestic flight right away. “Sealed” flights have been removed.

Domestic airlines will not always ask for proof, but it is best to have your vaccination certificate or Covid test result on hand in case you are asked to show it.

Siam Legal has received reports from potential clients that some hospitals are creating difficulties for them until full payment is made for their medical expenses. Also, foreigners have allegedly been threatened with lawsuits for not settling their medical bills before being discharged. Using out-of-country policies can be problematic. We recommend using insurance providers headquartered inside Thailand with a proper cover to avoid any undesirable outcomes.

Siam Legal International, a premier law firm in Thailand, recommends purchasing the proper insurance and so endorses AXA Insurance for your travel to Thailand insurance needs.

HERE ARE SOME IMPORTANT POINTS YOU NEED TO KNOW BEFORE PURCHASING TRAVEL INSURANCE

  • Please review the details of any insurance before purchasing to understand if the policy has adequate cover. Cheap policies with inadequate levels of cover can lead to significant personal liability, and scenarios where policy holders incur hundreds of thousands of baht in out-of-pocket medical expenses have been reported. There are significant financial risks to being underinsured during your stay in Thailand.
  • These policies do not cover medical costs from accidents (like motorcycle accidents) or common unexpected illnesses (common fever or food poisoning). Best to pay a few baht more for the peace of mind that comes from having proper coverage.
  • AXA covers medical expenses (outpatient and inpatient) for accidents and illnesses, including COVID-19. Other insurance coverage might not.
  • AXA also covers telemedicine and teleconsultation, which may be required during the quarantine period of any traveler.

Thai hospital staff are familiar with AXA cover, which should prevent any inconvenience during hospital admission or medical treatment from your hotel room. AXA Thailand also offers 24/7 local support during your stay in Thailand.

  • Pfizer–BioNTech or Comirnaty
  • Janssen or Janssen/Ad26.COV2.S
  • AstraZeneca or Covishield
  • Sinopharm or COVILO
  • CoronaVac or SinoVac
  • Sputnik Lite

How to Obtain Travel Insurance

Though COVID-19 insurance is no longer mandatory for entry to Thailand, it is recommended to have comprehensive Travel insurance for the duration of your stay. Good travel insurance covers not only medical expenses relating to Covid but also accident cover, personal damage, loss of possessions, and missed or delayed flights.

It is best to purchase insurance before you travel. The easiest way to buy your policy is online through a reputable insurance provider. The insurance company will provide you with the all-important certificate of cover that you can present to authorities or medical professionals if you need to make a claim.

You may also be asked to present this certificate to the airline before they will allow you to onboard. It’s quick and easy to do online. You can choose your length of policy from 7, 15, 30, 60 days, and 180 days. Just make sure that the policy covers your entire period of stay in Thailand as foreigners are not eligible for free medical care in Thailand and insurance companies will not cover claims for existing conditions.

You may purchase AXA COVID-19 travel insurance within a few minutes. Check them below.

How Far Is Thailand From UK

' src=

The world is a tapestry of diverse cultures and breathtaking landscapes, waiting to be explored and experienced. As you plan your next adventure, a question that often arises is just how far your chosen destination is from your starting point. In the case of Thailand and the UK, two distinct worlds beckon, separated by vast stretches of land and sea. Understanding the geographical distance between these two captivating destinations is not just about numbers on a map; it’s about comprehending the magnitude of the journey that lies ahead.

In this illuminating exploration by Go Find Thailand, we embark on a virtual journey that bridges continents, traversing from the bustling streets of the United Kingdom to the tropical paradise of Thailand. From the miles in the sky to the time zone shifts, we delve into the dimensions of distance that shape your journey.

As you delve into this journey of discovery, consider how the distance between these two remarkable destinations is more than just a physical span. It’s a passage through cultures, experiences, and moments that will become a part of your travel narrative. So, whether you’re an explorer seeking new horizons or a dreamer yearning for distant shores, join us as we uncover the question: How far is Thailand from the UK?

The Aerial Journey: Miles Across the Globe

When it comes to measuring the distance between Thailand and the UK, the most direct way is to look at the aerial route that connects them. The approximate aerial distance between the two destinations is around 5,900 miles (9,500 kilometers). To put this in perspective, it’s equivalent to flying almost halfway around the Earth’s equator or covering the distance between New York City and Los Angeles multiple times.

Comparing this distance to other popular travel routes can help grasp the magnitude of the journey. For instance, the flight from London to Bangkok is longer than the journey from London to New York, showcasing the extensive scope of the adventure that awaits those venturing from the UK to Thailand.

Duration of Flight: From Takeoff to Touchdown

The aerial distance between Thailand and the UK undoubtedly raises questions about how long the actual flight takes. The duration of a flight between these two destinations can vary based on factors such as the departure and arrival airports, flight routes, and layovers.

On average, a non-stop flight from major airports in the UK, like London Heathrow or London Gatwick, to Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport takes approximately 11 to 13 hours. This duration provides a snapshot of uninterrupted travel time, but it’s essential to consider that many flights may involve layovers, which can significantly extend the total travel time.

Routes with layovers might have shorter flight durations but longer overall travel times due to the waiting time between connecting flights. Depending on the chosen route and layover locations, total travel times can range from 14 to 20 hours or more.

As you plan your journey, factoring in the flight duration is crucial for setting expectations, especially if you’re connecting with other travel arrangements upon arrival. Keep in mind that while the journey might span hours, the experiences and memories you’ll gain will be immeasurable.

Time Zone Difference: Navigating Across Time

Traveling across continents not only covers physical distance but also entails a shift in time zones. Thailand and the UK are in different time zones, and understanding this difference is vital for planning your itinerary and minimizing the effects of jet lag.

Thailand follows Indochina Time (ICT), which is typically 6 to 7 hours ahead of Coordinated Universal Time (UTC+7 or UTC+8, depending on daylight saving time). On the other hand, the UK operates on Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) or British Summer Time (GMT+1 during daylight saving time).

This time zone difference means that when it’s noon in London, it’s already late afternoon or early evening in Thailand. Adjusting your internal clock to the local time of your destination helps mitigate the effects of jet lag and ensures a smoother transition into your Thai adventure.

Navigating the time zone difference adds a layer of preparation to your journey, enabling you to optimize your schedule, activities, and rest for a seamless transition across continents.

Travel Routes: Direct Flights and Layovers

When embarking on the journey from the UK to Thailand, you’ll encounter different travel route options, each with its own advantages and considerations.

Direct Flights: Direct flights offer the convenience of a non-stop journey, allowing you to reach your destination without layovers. While direct flights might have longer durations, they provide a straightforward and uninterrupted travel experience. These flights are suitable for travelers who prefer to minimize transit time and enjoy the comfort of staying on the same plane.

Flights with Layovers: Flights with layovers can offer shorter overall travel times but involve connecting at an intermediary airport. Layovers vary in duration and can range from a couple of hours to several. While layovers provide an opportunity to stretch your legs and explore a new place, they also extend the total travel time and might involve adjusting to different time zones.

Choosing between direct flights and flights with layovers depends on your preferences, budget, and travel plans. Direct flights are ideal for those seeking convenience, while layovers can provide a chance to experience an additional destination during your journey.

Conclusion: Embarking on an Epic Journey

As we conclude our exploration of the distance between Thailand and the UK, you’re equipped with insights that extend beyond mere miles and hours. The journey from one continent to another encompasses more than physical distance; it’s a passage that weaves cultures, time zones, and experiences into a tapestry of adventure.

From the bustling streets of London to the serene beaches of Thailand, this journey invites you to embrace the transitions, whether they’re in time or scenery. It’s a reminder that travel is not solely about reaching a destination; it’s about the transformation that occurs along the way.

So, as you embark on the remarkable journey from the UK to Thailand, remember that each mile is a stepping stone toward a new experience, a new connection, and a new story to tell. From navigating time zones to choosing travel routes, every decision adds to the narrative of your journey. As the world shrinks beneath the wings of an aircraft, the possibilities and adventures that await are boundless.

The primary train route from London, UK, to Bangkok, Thailand, typically involves a journey through France, Germany, Poland, Russia, China, Vietnam, and Cambodia. Taking a train for part of the route can bring down the cost of travel versus taking a direct international flight.

Trains and Buses:

Using the Trans-Siberian railway to Moscow is an efficient route and allows you to stop to sightsee along the way or to go directly to Moscow. It is a long route so you may choose to purchase a sleeper cabin to spend your time sleeping overnight.

Once in Moscow you will have the option of taking faster or slower routes which will affect the total cost, and then you will also need to choose if you want to take a budget (Trans-Mongolian) or luxury (Golden Eagle) train which will cut across Mongolia and the Gobi desert before entering Beijing China.

Using the Trans-Siberian Trip Planner you can plan stopovers to explore the destinations along the route.

From Beijing, you will take the two-night sleeper to Hanoi, then head to and then Phnom Penh via Saigon which will take you to Cambodia, and then you will board the 16-hour bus to Bangkok.  The total route will take two weeks to complete.

Why take a train instead of flying to Bangkok?

Are you tired of the terrible food, cramped seats, lost luggage, and long security waits involved with international travel then trade in your plane ticket for a train ride?

Using trains as your source of travel is often more comfortable, and flexible and offers scenic views as you take one of the two major routes across Europe and Asia on the Trans-Siberian railway. Also by taking a train instead of a plane you are reducing greenhouse gasses in the environment and helping our planet.

I would advise you to book a package deal through an organized trip as while booking yourself can offer flexibility and save money, you will have to figure out how to transfer between the Eurostar and Tran-Siberan railway on your own.

Can you travel directly from London, United Kingdom to Bangkok, Thailand?

The answer is “YES!” There are a variety of airlines that offer direct flights from Heathrow Airport to Bangkok Airport daily including Thai Airways (TG), British Airways (BA) Qatar Airlines, and Eva Air landing at Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) in Bangkok.

How long is the flight from London to Bangkok?

The flight route from London to Bangkok takes approximately 12 hours if flying direct and even longer if flying with any layovers in your route.

When is the best time to fly from London to Bangkok?

The best time to fly between London and Bangkok is November to April.

Steps to Booking a Flight from London to Bangkok:

Step #1: Choose an Airport

Decide which airport in London you will fly out of as the Major airports in London for international travel include Heathrow (LHR), Gatwick (LGW), London City (LCY), and Stansted (STN).

Step #2: Check Visa and Entry Requirements – Do I need a VISA?

Those with British passports are eligible for a 30-day visa-free entry into Bangkok as long as the reason is tourism. All tourists should ensure they have the necessary visa or entry requirements for Thailand, so consult the Thai embassy or Consulate before booking a trip. Tourists can often extend their visas between 30-60 days with permission.

Step #3: Book Vaccinations

Health providers would encourage all travelers to get vaccinations for hepatitis A, typhoid, and tetanus and if you plan to explore rural Thailand then you should get Malaria prophylaxis but it is best to consult a health provider well in advance of leaving the country.

Step #4: Book Flights

Once your travel documents are in order you can use various travel websites like Skyscanner, a travel agency, or go directly to the airline’s websites to book flights. It is important to consider cost, layovers, and luggage allowances when selecting a flight. Booking flights early can be an advantage as you often receive better pricing than waiting closer to the departure date.

Getting Around Bangkok

Once you arrive in Bangkok you will need to know how to get around and explore the city. Bangkok has multiple affordable transportation options including the subway (MRT), the Skytrain (BTS), taxis, and tuk-tuks.

If you are using multiple public transportation options you will want to buy the Rabbit card for easy accessibility as it allows you to load your card with money and then tap on and off transit.

When traveling you should always be aware of your safety and while these transportation routes are safe you should ensure you hold on tight to your luggage, use reputable transportation options, and be cautious of pickpockets in crowded areas such as train station platforms.

Foreign Secretary pushes for closer cooperation with Thailand

David Cameron heads to Thailand, one of the biggest economies in South East Asia, for his first visit as Foreign Secretary to the Indo-Pacific region.

travel time uk to thailand

The Foreign Secretary takes a seat in a Gripen aircraft during his visit to Korat Royal Thai Air Force Base in Thailand.

  • the Foreign Secretary travels to Thailand on his first visit to the Indo-Pacific region
  • he will visit fighter jets built with British components and promote defence exports worth over £300 million
  • he will agree a new Strategic Partnership with Prime Minister Srettha and the Foreign Minister, deepening economic and security ties and paving the way to closer cooperation between the UK and Thailand

The Foreign Secretary will travel to Thailand today (Wednesday 20 March) to drive forward the UK’s partnership with the one of the biggest economies in South East Asia.

He will look to bolster even closer cooperation through a range of joint priorities including defence, regional security and stability, science and technology, the economy and trade.

The UK and Thailand’s trading relationship is worth around £6 billion annually, and the Foreign Secretary will use his visit to explore ways to strengthen these ties to boost both the UK and Thai economies.

Thailand is an important UK security partner, particularly on advancing peace and reconciliation in Myanmar and protecting international law and regional cooperation. With over half of world trade passing through the Indo-Pacific region, it is also vital to work with Thailand on maritime security to ensure reliable access to the goods the UK wants and needs.

Foreign Secretary David Cameron said:

South East Asia is a commercial powerhouse and Thailand is one of the biggest economies of the lot. Working with countries in this region means jobs and growth back here in the UK.     Thailand is a founding member of ASEAN and an influential player across the Indo-Pacific region. We will continue to work with them to address shared global challenges that affect us all – including the impacts of climate change, rapid technological development, and threats to global health.

The Foreign Secretary will see first-hand the deepening UK-Thailand defence partnership on a visit to a military airbase, where he will showcase UK support for the Gripen aircraft campaign.

The Gripen is a collaboration between the UK, Sweden and the US, with companies across the UK supplying up to 40% of the components for the aircraft. The success of the campaign would not only strengthen the Royal Thai Air Force but would also see an injection of £350 million into the UK economy, creating and supporting jobs from Bournemouth to Manchester.

Three years ago, the UK delivered almost half a million COVID vaccines to Thailand. Since then, UK and Thai researchers have boosted efforts to deliver fair and timely access to affordable and high-quality vaccines through the recently announced UK-South East Asia Vaccine Manufacturing Research Hub.

The Foreign Secretary will meet researchers from this partnership and other inventors, working on challenges from AI to engineering biology, on a visit to a university. There, he will highlight the ambition of the International Science Partnership Fund worth £337 million globally to enable scientific collaboration between UK and Thai researchers and innovators to solve shared global challenges and foster prosperity. Key projects include tackling some of the world’s deadliest diseases, building food security networks and developing clean energy systems.

He will also announce the launch of a UK Partnering for Accelerated Climate Transitions (UK PACT) Thailand Country Fund worth up to £6 million to boost green growth. This will support sustainable transport, green finance and carbon pricing in Thailand.

David Cameron will sign the UK-Thailand Strategic Partnership Roadmap to strengthen the relationship on defence, climate and energy, trade and investment, agriculture, digital and tech, health and education ahead of next year’s 170-year anniversary of UK-Thai diplomatic relations.

Following his visit to Thailand, the Foreign Secretary will head to Australia for the annual Australia-UK Minister Consultations (AUKMIN).

These Are The 5 Best Countries For First Time Solo Travelers In 2024

Solo travel is one of the hottest travel trends of 2024.

More and more travelers are opting to explore the world solo rather than travel with friends, family, or a significant other.

There are so many benefits to solo travel, but it can also be overwhelming - especially if it's your first time traveling alone.

As someone who has traveled solo to 50+ countries , there are many destinations I would not recommend for a first-time solo traveler.

However, the 5 countries below are some of the best places to start to ease yourself into solo travel. These destinations are safe, beautiful, and easy to travel solo.

Here's where to go for your first solo trip this year:

1. United Kingdom

One of the top destinations I always recommend for first-time solo travelers is the UK.

For travelers coming from the United States, the UK is probably the “easiest” place you can travel abroad.

You don't have to worry about any language barriers, it's easy to get around on your own, there are tons of fun things to do for solo travelers, and it's very safe.

London is a great place to base yourself on a solo trip to the UK, and there are lots of easy day trips you can take on the train from there.

You can also easily hop on the train and head up to Edinburgh, Scotland if you want to visit another UK destination too.

Another great destination for first-time solo travelers is Mexico.

It's a tourism powerhouse and English is widely spoken in the most popular beach destinations like Cancun, Tulum, Playa del Carmen, Puerto Vallarta, and Cabo.

In particular, Cancun and the Mexican Caribbean are perfect for your first solo trip. Gorgeous beaches, fun activities like visiting Mayan ruins, and delicious food await you in Mexico.

It's also easy to meet other solo travelers while traveling in Mexico.

If you'd prefer a city break over beaches, Mexico City is also one of the top destinations in the country for solo travelers.

3. Thailand

The best country in Asia for first-time solo travelers is Thailand. Thailand, nicknamed the Land of Smiles, is safe and beautiful and has a well-trodden backpacker trail, making it very easy to get around and meet other travelers.

From the lively city of Bangkok to the mountains of the north to the stunning beaches and islands of the south, there is so much to explore in Thailand.

It's also incredibly affordable, making it a great value destination for solo travelers.

If you're looking for one of the best European countries for your first solo trip, why not head to Croatia?

Croatia is among the safest countries in the world right now, making it a great destination for solo travel in Europe.

It's also impossibly beautiful, with amazing towns like Dubrovnik and Split dotting the Adriatic Coast and beautiful national parks like Krka and Plitvice Lakes inland.

There's a good level of English spoken in Croatia, and it's easy to get around the country on your own by bus.

As a solo female traveler , I also felt incredibly safe here.

Finally, if you're dreaming of South America, Peru is where I would start for a first-time solo traveler.

Peru has a well-developed tourism infrastructure so it's easy to get around and book activities.

It's also a destination where you can easily meet lots of other travelers.

This is a great destination for adventurous travelers. Trekking the Inca Trail to Macchu Picchu, hiking to Rainbow Mountain, surfing in Lima, and sandboarding in the desert in Huacachina are just a few of the epic activities that you can easily do solo in Peru.
