Joe Bonamassa Live At Utility Arena, Birmingham 14/05/2023 Live Review
Making a triumphant return to Birmingham for the first time since 2018, Joe Bonamassa is back at Birmingham’s Utilita Arena with a setlist packed with classic cuts and heavy-duty covers. Perhaps surprisingly, bearing in mind his recent live release ( Tales Of Time , reviewed here ) focused almost exclusively on the excellent Time Clocks album, this tour eschews it almost entirely, focusing more on the period running from 2011’s Dust Bowl to 2020’s Royal Tea , with a sprinkling of covers thrown in for good measure. It feels like something of a reset for, as much as Joe’s themed tours have been an absolute pleasure, this feels more like a consolidation of the fantastic run of albums with which Joe has graced us, and the man himself looks relaxed as he takes to the stage, suit and shades fully intact.
The show gets off to a cracking start with a bruising Evil Mama , the lead track from 2018’s epic Redemption . Whether because this is the last night of the tour, or simply because Joe’s current band absolutely cooks , the performance is ferocious, with that ascending riff simply smoking out of Joe’s fretboard. It’s an auspicious start and it firmly grabs the audience’s attention, not least when Joe stands back to allow Reese Wynans the opportunity to rip out a keyboard solo that matches Joe beat for beat in intensity. Next up, and sounding more Floydian than ever, Dust Bowl sees Joe using his lovely ES 335 to haul the track from layers of reverb, as excellent drummer Lemar Carter lets his cymbals wash over it all. Always a fantastic song live, tonight it takes on a proggier aspect than we’ve seen previously, providing a calmer moment before an epically expanded Love Ain’t A Love Song detonates with all the force of a tactical nuke. With the band playing for their lives, not only do we get another explosive keyboard solo, but we also see Joe tearing into his guitar with such abandon he cuts his hand open (“we’re literally bleeding for you people”, he comments later). Blood, sweat and tears there may be up on stage but it’s surely worth it for, with Joe and his entire band committed to the performance, the audience have no choice but to strap themselves in and try to go the distance.
It’s not all frantic guitar workouts and, following Love Ain’t A Love Song , we get the beautiful Self-Inflicted Wounds – one of Joe’s most intimate and affecting songs. A beautiful rendition, it sees a breathtaking vocal from Jade MacRae, who evokes Clare Tory’s scene-stealing performance on The Great Gig In The Sky , her commitment to the moment such that fellow singer Danielle De Andrea claps and cheers with delight. It’s a wonderful moment and it holds the entire arena, audience and band alike, absolutely captivated.
The middle portion of the set sees the band having fun with some lighter numbers. First up, a breezy Just ‘Cos You Can Don’t Mean You Should leavens the mood, neatly paving the way for a joyous cover of Coco Montoya’s I Want To Shout About It. A glorious, fifties-style boogie, it provides Josh Smith an impressive moment in the spotlight, while Jade and Danielle have fun winding the audience up with some call and response vocals towards the conclusion. There’s even room for some old school blues, with a brilliant cover of Double Trouble (Otis Rush), providing Jade and Danielle a moment to leave the stage, as Joe leads the band for a stripped-back performance that feels like a nod to his earliest days, getting to know the blues through covering the greats.
Kicking things up a notch, the wired riff to I Didn’t Think She Would Do It sets the stage a light once more, while the breezy A Conversation With Alice skips past quickly as the band head towards the one moment from Time Clocks on offer today – the slinky, bluesy shuffle of The Heart That Never Waits, which boasts gorgeous backing vocals and an extended opportunity for more of Joe’s sublime guitar work. Of course, while it’s Joe’s name on the sign, he’s always happy to give his band a chance to shine, and with the sparks still flying, he tears into Lonely Boy , providing space for Josh Smith to take the lead, before Reese and Calvin Turner get into a bass and keys battle that lights up the stage. It highlights the wonderful chemistry the band members have forged out on the road, and it also gives Joe a moment to stroll off, only to return with his flying V, ready for the show’s big rock number. And, of course, when it comes to Joe Bonamassa, it doesn’t get much bigger than his all-guns-blazing take on ZZ Top’s Just Got Paid. Extended here to a wonderfully ridiculous extent, the entire audience is on their feet for a number that takes in fiery solos, an extended drum break that leaves jaws on the floor, and even a brief snippet of Paranoid as Joe pays loving tribute to the Birmingham crowd.
With the audience still on their feet and a sense that the show has been an almighty blow-out for Joe’s band, who are looking forward to going home at the end of the tour, Joe drops the traditional Mountain Time encore, with which he’s been ending shows elsewhere, in favour of an epic Sloe Gin , a cover that maintains a special place in Joe’s catalogue. It is the perfect finale to an epic show, and it leaves the audience cheering for more long after the band have taken their final bow and the house lights have risen.
Joe Bonamassa shows are always special, and you never quite know what to expect. Tonight, having successfully concluded another run, Joe’s enthusiasm frequently runs away with itself. An artist who usually seems so unflappable, even when tearing through a solo that would have most guitarists running for cover, tonight he’s a demon, shredding his guitars (and his fingers); and even dropping the carefully-guarded façade (albeit briefly), when humorously admonishing the crowd for booing the fact that it’s the tour’s final night. With the current band firmly bedded in after their time out on the road together, and with Josh Smith providing additional weight to the guitars, it’s the heaviest we’ve seen Joe in some time and the blazing Just Got Paid finale reminds us that while Joe has blues in his soul, sometimes he just wants to rock – tonight we saw both sides and it was one hell of a performance.

LIVE REVIEW: Joe Bonamassa in Blackpool
Blackpool opera house, uk - wednesday 10th may 2023.
12 May 2023 David Pickles
I don’t know if it’s the doughnuts or a stick of Blackpool rock, but whatever it is Joe Bonamassa can’t keep away from Blackpool. From his first visit in 2006 for his second ever UK show, he has been back many times. This is Joe’s fourth visit to the Magical Opera House and the perfect venue for the incredible artist that Joe is and with him his talented band.
As Joe hit the stage with ‘Evil Mama’ from his ‘Redemption’ album, you just knew this was going to be an epic night. Joe was heavy with his trusty Les Paul, cranking it up through a multitude of amps on the stage, accompanied by some awesome Hammond playing from Reese Wynans on this one. The band rocked, with a big shout out to his two fabulous backing singers. Strapping on his Gibson 355 Joe slid into one cool version of ‘Dust Bowl’… wow the band are as tight as tonight! And what soul there is in Joe’s fingers, as he weaves his magic on the fretboard. Lemar Carter on drums was on fire, driving the band with that grove… sublime.
Strat time and we have the wonderful ‘Love Ain’t a Love Song’ from ‘Different Shades of Blue’, with some tasty delicate playing and soulful backing singing. ‘Self Inflicted Wounds’, again from ‘Redemption’ was majestic and beautiful with Joe weaving his way through this one, accompanied by the backing singers, once again perfectly complimenting the song. Some incredible vocals here. ‘Breaking Up Someone’s Home’ from ‘Live at the Greek’ is next and the Gibson 355 looks and sounds so right on this one. Next is the Coco Montoya song ‘I Wanna Shout About It’, with an audience sing along. Strapping on the big red 355 again, Joe channels his inner Otis Rush on the excellent ‘Double Trouble’… you could hear a pin drop as he turns it down. Joe sure can play the blues.
The frantic ‘I Didn’t Think She Could Do It’ from the excellent ‘Royal Tea’ album. The haunting beauty that is ‘Happier Times’ – a Gibson SG never sounded so sweet. ‘Lonely Boy’ sees Joe strap on the Telecaster but it’s Josh Smith letting rip on his Ibanez Tele that steals the thunder on this one and as Joe says of Josh, “he is the best guitarist on the stage tonight.”
Some honky-tonk piano from Reece before Joe let’s the telecaster rip, Wow wow wow is all I can say as, a quick Hammond fury allows Joe just enough time to swap the Telecaster for the Flying V finishing the song and going straight into the ZZ Top classic ‘Just Got Paid Today’. Boy, Joe is in overdrive now, the Flying V perfect for the chunky riff, Joe struts every inch of the Opera House stage with an understated air of confidence slaying all before with his axe.
Joe’s inner Page comes out as he uses his Theremin dipping into a bit of Led Zeppelin’s ‘Dazed and Confused’ before it’s all over. But Joe and the band quickly return to the stage to great delight and we are given the most amazing version of the sublime ‘Mountain Time’, nearly 15 minutes of pure bliss – a telecaster has never sounded so good. Joe’s guitar playing is smooth like honey and as in the words of ‘Mountain Time’, “it takes me somewhere and it’s good to be there” which leaves me feeling truly satisfied.
When you have such a vast back catalogue of songs to chose from, the thirteen songs Joe played almost feels like you have been short changed. Like when you get a bag of donuts and there are only a few in there, but when you taste one you realise that these are the best god damn donuts you have ever tasted. And that was tonight – Joe didn’t play all my favourites but the 2 hour 20 minute set was sublime. The best god damn show I have seen him play and I have seen a few going back to 2007. If you haven’t got a ticket for a show on this tour, then get one and that’s an order! You won’t be disappointed.

“[They’re] better than me — all of them,” he tells Billboard ‘s Behind the Setlist podcast. Keyboard player Reese Wynans “gets a standing ovation every night,” says Bonamassa before a recent concert in Charlotte, N.C. “He gets the biggest ovation of the night. He’s a living legend [who has] played with Stevie Ray [Vaughan] and Delbert McClinton. He’s a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee [as a member of Vaughan’s band, Double Trouble]. Every band has to have a Hall of Famer. He’s our’s.”
Guitarist Josh Smith is a “better player than I am,” he continues. “He’s killer.” He calls both drummer Lamar Carter (Raphael Sadie, Demi Lovato) and bass player Calvin Turner (Marc Broussard, Troy “Trombone Shorty” Andrews) “amazing” musicians. Backup singers Jade MacRae and Danni D’Andrea, who have worked with Liam Gallagher and Prince, respectively, are “saints” for tolerating his singing voice, he says self-effacingly.
The great musicians tend to attract talented musicians to their touring bands. That gives Bonamassa a superb cast to help re-create his songs and transform the studio recordings for the live setting. “We have some fun with it,” he says. “Bring it up, bring it down. Like in the case of ‘Self-Inflicted Wounds,’ our great vocalist Jade MacRae takes a vocal solo at the very end and it brings the house down.”
Bonamassa is currently on tour in Europe and will perform in Germany on May 5-6, Luxembourg on May 7 and France on May 10. He will play five dates in the U.K. from May 9-14 before returning to the U.S. to perform at the Capitol Theatre in Yakima, Wash., on May 26 and the Backroad Blues Festival with Kenny Wayne Sheppard in Bend, Ore., on May 27.

Show Review: Joe Bonamassa in Milwaukee
Joe Bonamassa, The Riverside Theater, Milwaukee, WI, 2/18/2023

Joe Bonamassa Brings His Fierce Intensity to Milwaukee’s Riverside Theater
It feels like words themselves are simply inadequate to fully describe the guitar wizardry of Joe Bonamassa. ‘Amazing,’ ‘astounding,’ ‘unbelievable,’ ‘mind-blowing,’ ‘unequalled,’ ‘superlative.’ Yes, they all work, but are still insufficient to convey the experience of witnessing Joe Bonamassa live.
Joe Bonamassa and his band brought their Spring 2023 Tour to a jam-packed Riverside Theater in Milwaukee on February 18. For some in the audience, this was their first taste of his talents. For many, this was just one of a multitude of live performances they have experienced with the fervor of band zealots.
Joe Bonamassa has been a prolific artist for over 25 years. He’s released 16 solo studio albums since 2000 and a bunch of live albums. He’s appeared and collaborated with legends spanning many different genres, including opening for B.B. King at age 12. His newest release, Tales of Time , is an upcoming live concert film and album shot last year at Red Rocks Amphitheater in Colorado.
Bonamassa was raised on the blues, thanks to the guidance of his father. His style and writing has evolved over time from covering pure blues to infusing rock into his work. His style is warm and inviting, drawing in the listener as one gazes in awe at his intricate finger work. While many have suggested Bonamassa may not be a true blues musician, he clearly shows how the genre can grow and evolve.
An appropriate build-up to the start of the show was the sound of Tom Petty over the loudspeakers with his classic, “The Waiting.” Everyone in the audience would have agreed as Petty’s recorded voice carried throughout the auditorium singing “The waiting is the hardest part!” After the last notes of that song, the stage lit up, the crowd jumped to its feet as Joe Bonamassa launched into “Evil Mama.”
A simple three note guitar lick led off “Dust Bowl,” evoking the echoes of an abandoned Western town.
“Midnight Blues” started off slowly at almost a ballad-like pace leading into frenzied note picking demonstrating Bonamassa’s ability to mix up styles during individual songs.
Throughout the entire set, Bonamassa was intensely focused on his music. At times, he appeared to be physically attacking and squeezing the life out of his guitars with his fingers flying at lightening speed. At other times, he stroked the strings lovingly, almost sensuously, as he coaxed and extracted extended tones that felt like a siren’s song.
His set list in Milwaukee spanned his entire recording career, from “Mountain Time,” which appeared on his 2002 release, So, It’s Like That, to one of his newest songs, “Shout About It.”
With his ubiquitous shades, Bonamassa clearly cuts a distinctive figure on stage. The shades are not an affectation, but instead are necessary due to his sensitivity to light. Understandable given the brightness of the stage (for which a photographer gives his thanks!).
Unlike many artists, Joe Bonamassa didn’t offer up much in the way of banter between songs. This is a direct reflection of the intensity with which he treats his music. 100% focus, 100% of the time.
Bonamassa’s take on one of Muddy Waters’ classics, “Double Trouble,” was especially sweet. From Bonamassa’s 2014 tribute concert to Waters and Howlin’ Wolf at Red Rocks, the tune began with Reese Wynan’s honky tonk tickling of the ivories. Bonamassa then gave the song his soulful guitar and vocals. The song showed how Bonamassa can master blues classics.
He did take a break after “I Didn’t Think She Would Do It,” when he engaged warmly with the audience and introduced his band.
Bonamassa is backed up on this tour by true talent. Most notable is the venerable Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member, Reese Wynans, on keyboards. A longstanding member of Stevie Ray Vaughan’s backing band, Double Trouble, Wynans was highlighted throughout the show with solos on the keys.
Also accompanying Bonamassa was blues guitarist and producer Josh Smith, Lamar Carter on drums and Calvin Turner on bass. Australian-born singers, Jade MacRae and Danielle De Andrea, provided backing vocals.
Bonamassa showed his appreciation for the packed house complimenting the crowd on its rowdiness. He recalled his first Milwaukee gig at Shank Hall, playing to a crowd of about 40 people. That was in stark contrast to his last time playing to a full house at The Riverside on March 10, 2020—just before the Covid-forced lockdown that killed live performances. He then quipped about that, after Saturday night, “if I wake up to WWIII, I’m going to blame all of you!”
Bonamassa ended his regular set with his unique twist on ZZ Top’s “Just Got Paid.” Unique with Bonamassa’s teasing with fades and tones throughout, and ultimately transitioning into a concluding raucous jam of Led Zeppelin’s “Dazed and Confused.”
After a standing ovation and cheers by the crowd, Bonamassa and crew came back on stage for their encore of “Mountain Time,” which he said was his most requested song and inspired by his love for the Allman Brothers.
Beyond his formidable playing and composing talents, Bonamassa has a number of other ventures aimed at promoting upcoming stars and furthering the blues and rock genres. Bonamassa founded the Keeping the Blues Alive Foundation in 2011, with the mission of funding youth music education and projects and preserving the rich heritage and culture of blues music. An offshoot of the Foundation is Keeping the Blues Alive Records. KBTR Records was formed in 2020 with the goal of promoting up and coming blues artists, such as Joanne Shaw Taylor, Marc Broussard, and Joanne Carter.
Bonamassa also recently launched Journeyman LLC, designed as a full-service artist management, record label, concert promotion and marketing company to build awareness and promotion of independent artists.
Joe Bonamassa has a heavy tour schedule during 2023, with the continuation of his spring tour in the US, Australia and Europe. He’ll host a two-night “Keeping the Blues Alive Presents” event in August 2023 with Styx and guitarist Don Felder.
For more information about Joe Bonamassa and a list of his tour dates, visit his website at: https://jbonamassa.com/tour-dates/ .
Stated simply, Joe Bonamassa is one of the best contemporary guitarists around. His music is wonderful to listen to, but true joy exists in seeing him live. Talent beyond description.

Prepare to be impressed. There’s never a doubt about the quality of talent on a Joe Bonamassa stage! He brings it each and every time.
He’s the best live. Saw him at Red Rock, but I thought his Milwaukee show was better

CONCERT REVIEW: JOE BONAMASSA Epic Tour Closing Date at Fort Lauderdale Was An Eclectic Blues Masterclass That Defied Tomorrow
It feels almost futile at this point to keep documenting Joe Bonamassa ’s live performances, yet here we are once again. Uncontested as the torchbearer of modern blues-rock, we have followed Joe ’s studio and live endeavors for many years now, and we found ourselves witnessing the final night of his current tour – coincidentally also his final show for 2023 – at the Hard Rock Live at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood this past Saturday. And, once again the evening unfolded as a testament to Bonamassa ‘s virtuosity, punctuated by his effortless stage presence and the stellar support of his outstanding band.
The anticipation was palpable as the venue plunged into darkness at 8:15 PM, with the melodies of Tom Petty and The Heartbreak ’s song “The Waiting” signaling the beginning of the show. Impeccably dressed, as usual, Joe and his bandmates showed up on stage and wasted no time as they dived head-first into a scintillating rendition of “Hope You Realize It (Goodbye Again)” , one of the tracks from his most recent studio album “Blues Deluxe Vol. 2”. Such opening salvo served as an impeccable appetizer, setting an electrifying tone for the evening to come; filled with infectious harmonies and searing musicianship, and topped off with Bonamassa ‘s emotional vocal delivery and guitar pyrotechnics.
As it happens in every Bonamassa show I’ve been to, we were treated to a musical tapestry that spanned various tempos and emotions, with Joe ’s original songs sprinkled with covers for a good measure, exemplified by the cuts two and three from the setlist: a fiery rendition of Bobby Bland ’s “24 Hour Blues” and a cover of Guitar Slim’s “Well, I Done Got Over It”, the later paired with a ferocious guitar solo section. What makes Bonamassa a force of his own is the fact that his performance is not just about technical prowess. Sure, he absolutely can make his guitar sing, but he connects with the audience at a much deeper level. As his hands run through the fretboard, he manages to convey such a depth of emotion, a true tapestry of sounds that feel both powerful and intimate in unison, easily resonating with everyone present. And the standing ovations from almost 5000 in attendance during several moments throughout the night, were unequivocal evidence as to how the Bonamassa ’s music made them feel.
“Self Inflicted Wounds” allowed Joe to stretch out his soulful voice, whereas the slow-burner of “The Last Matador of Bayonne” turned into a blues feast, taken to unexpectedly high levels by the combination of his blistering, incendiary extended guitar solo (on his 1962 Cherry Red Gibson ES-335 Guitar), and the mesmerizing powerhouse background vocals of Jade McRae and Danielle DeAndrea , who are an essential part of the presentation, and add a phenomenal extra layer to each song, serving as a tremendous counterpart to Joe ’s register.
Bonamassa ‘s interaction with the audience came after “Breaking Up Someone’s Home” , and he effortlessly injected a touch of humor while acknowledging the significance of the night being the tour’s finale: “Thank you to every one of you for coming to spend this night with us. Tonight is the last night of the tour, and our final show of the year, and we couldn’t think of a better place for it to happen” he wittily quipped, setting the stage for the introductions of the exceptional talent that was accompanying him on stage. “These guys are the real deal, and I would be nowhere without them, I’m just a guy pretending to look like Men in Black, Part 5” he humbly added.
Despite Bonamassa ‘s humble assertions that he’s an entertainer rather than just a guitar player, his otherworldly abilities were front and center, and “The Heart That Never Waits” was a picture-perfect example of a band firing on all cylinders, sporting a ferocious organ section courtesy of three times Grammy award winner keyboardist Reese Wynans , searing backing vocals by McRae and DeAndrea , and Joe exploring his instrument’s sonic nuances, building to a thunderous crescendo and concluding with an extended note that seemed to suspend time and space.
The last segment of the show was the stuff blues dreams are made of: “Is It Safe to Go Home”, coincidentally written by the other man on stage playing the guitar, Josh Smith , and supercharged renditions of Fleetwood’s Mac “Lazy Poker Blues” , and ZZ Top ’s “Just Got Paid”, featuring a drum solo by Lemar Carter and a riveting, additional section of Zeppelin ’s “Dazed and Confused” , as immortalized by Bonamassa during his 2009 rendition at The Royal Albert Hall. Joe played a red Jackson instead of a Les Paul, and rocked it in a way that would make James Hetfield pale with envy.
I’ve seen Bonamassa live numerous times over the years, and every single time is a different experience, with its own charm and song selection, but all of them become a remarkable spectacle. He knows all too well how to weave a sonic narrative that captivates and transcends the live stage, one that leaves an indelible memory experience that defies the “tales of time”.

Gig review: JOE BONAMASSA – Utilita Arena, Birmingham, 14 May 2023
Share the post "Gig review: JOE BONAMASSA – Utilita Arena, Birmingham, 14 May 2023"
Joe Bonamassa is a regular visitor to these shores. Having wrapped up a short tour last Spring, he was back with his band for another five UK dates playing venues he skipped last time. Indeed this was his first gig in Birmingham for four years.
So I was a little surprised that this cavernous arena was not more full. The stage had been moved forward a couple of blocks and the upper tiers were shrouded behind black curtains.
The band had seen a couple of personnel changes since those UK shows in 2022. Lemar Carter stepped up to the drum stool and Calvin Turner picked up the bass. They were immediately in the thick of the action with Carter’s furious drum intro to ‘Evil Mama’ paving the way for Turner’s heavy, rolling bass groove.
Bonamassa’s choppy licks caught the ear, but so did the multi-tasking stabs and swirls of veteran keyboard maestro, Reese Wynans who brought the organ fill as well as simultaneously covering the horn samples (in the absence of real brass) and taking an early keyboard solo following Bonamassa’s first instrumental foray.
The contrasting ‘Dust Bowl’ followed immediately, bringing a change of pace and mood. Turner continued to shine on the track’s bubbling bass signature and the almost haunting guitar lines seem to echo around the hard surfaces and open spaces of the venue.
‘Love Ain’t A Love Song’ pushed and pulled the mood around. The track might not be one of Bonamassa’s strongest studio cuts, but it is transformed live, with extended instrumental sections, amped-up funk rhythms. And a prominent role for both backing singers, where Jade MacRae and Dani De Andrea excel.

This rendition had a song-within-a-song passage as JB took the solo right down and hovered stage-right to build up the layering and explode into a dramatic climax. Josh Smith on second guitar helped himself to his own solo at the end of the track and it felt like we were cooking on gas for the first time tonight.
‘Self-Inflicted Wounds’ marked the first departure from last year’s setlist running order and again Turner demonstrated his formidable wares on the track’s bass intro. The crowd responded appreciatively. Bonamassa found a seductive guitar tone full of poise and pace, but in some ways his plaintive vocal stood out here, augmented by a beautiful solo spot from MacRae. A very rounded track which seemed to slip into the set perfectly.
Bonamassa has a knack of taking studio tracks that might pass under the radar and turning them into something else on stage. ‘Just Cos You Can Don’t Mean You Should’ is another example. It has become a staple of the live set and when JB unleashes an absolute screamer of a solo mid-track, it was clear why. The passage is like a musical googly – you think you know what’s coming and then the flight, dip, pace and swerve of the notes take you by complete surprise.
‘I Want to Shout About It’ is a Ronnie Earl and the Broadcasters original also recorded by Coco Montoya and retained its joyous, Latin-infused rythmn; and again saw Turner and Carter combining well. Josh Smith took a starring role on an extended solo, bringing a lighter, melodic tone in comparison with JB. During a slow guitar/keyboard segment, Smith encouraged the audience into some clap-along/sing-a-long moments, but it’s a bit half-hearted and the venue in that set up gives limited scope for enthusiastic engagement.
The pace dropped for some slow blues in the shape of the Otis Rush standard, ‘Double Trouble’. Bonamassa indulged in a slow solo and walked across to the corner of the stage. He took his shades off, nodded to the audience and said, ‘How you doin’?’ before popping the eyewear back on and instantaneously changing gear to unleash burning fire and hot lead from his red semi-acoustic Gibson. Thrilling moments. Even though Bonamassa changes his guitar every other track, this is the gorgeous beast I associate most closely with him.
We get a snatch of a Hendrix-influenced ‘Django’ before the track morphs into ‘I Didn’t Think She Would Do It’ where some excellent harmonizing between guitar and keyboards provide a standout set-piece.
The logistics of a Bonamassa show are pretty much battened down these days. He has the same look each tour: blue suit, black shades, white shirt. Though I did notice the brown brogues have gone and he’s bought himself a nice comfy pair of black loafers since last May. It was time for the regulation mid-set chat around the band introductions. This was the final gig of a lengthy European tour and I thought I detected just a smidge of impatience in his humour. Or maybe a hint of awkwardness.
No matter. On the with the fine music. ‘A Conversation with Alice’ kicked in on its smooth, bowling riff and big, catchy chorus. One of the best tracks from 2020’s ‘Royal Tea’. Like many others, the song is extended and reworked in the live arena, with Smith stretching out on a lovely solo before Bonamassa and Wynans exchange pulsating vibes.
The band felt cohesive tonight and Bonamassa seemed happy to hand over the spotlight to both Wynans and Smith in particular for more starring roles than I’d seen previously. But on ‘The Heart That Never Waits’, it was the sensational drumming of Carter that stood out, powering a funky, rocky, swinging track. There was another immersive solo from the main man and when he took the picking down quiet and slow, stood at the front of the stage, he garnered the strongest response from the audience all night. The Birmingham crowd were clearly up for a little nurdling.
The thumping rockabilly of ‘Lonely Boy’ has suddenly become a live epic. Weinans looked done in after his supersonic piano break and we saw the best work all night from Smith on a stunning lead spot. Bonamassa followed this with a low-down dirty solo that finally had the crowd on its feet.
JB strapped on a Flying V for the last bars of ‘Lonely Boy’ which gave the closing moments extra grit and then straight in to ZZ Top’s ‘Just Got Paid’. Chunky riffs abounded in the heaviest track on view. Monster drumming from Carter and in the long instrumental section, the track became unrecognisable from the original. Bonamassa pulled out his trick with the theremin over in the corner to produce some unearthly sounds. There was even a drum solo, during which the band stepped back and then rejoined with a few blistering, spine-tingling bars of Zep’s ‘Dazed and Confused’. The number clocks in at over 10 minutes of neat adrenaline.
The encore was a classy rendition of ‘Sloe Gin’ and the evening was very complete. Punters went home happy.
Even though nine of the 13 tracks played tonight were in the set at the Royal Albert Hall last year, nothing was really the same here. All the tracks were reworked, re-arranged and buffed up. A couple of personnel changes also freshened the approach and ensured another masterclass from this blues rock talisman. We are lucky to have him around.

Review: Joe Bonamassa ‘Tales Of Time’
Tales Of Time
By Martine Ehrenclou
Three-time Grammy nominated blues/rock guitarist Joe Bonamassa returns with Tales of Time , a live concert film and album recorded over two nights at Red Rocks Amphitheater in Morrison, Colorado. Tales of Time is set to release on April 14th via Bonamassa’s J&R Adventures in CD/DVD, CD/Blu-Ray, 3 LP 180 gram vinyl and digital formats.
Tales of Time features the blues-rock superstar in peak form, performing raw and rocking tunes, pushing the boundaries of the genre with his band of superb musicians. It’s the next best thing to seeing Bonamassa live, as he seems to give in to his performances, letting loose on guitar riffs and solos, and genuinely enjoying enjoying the collaboration with his band. Against the stunning visual backdrop of the venue, few can deny the thrill of watching him perform.
The CD features ten tracks from Bonamassa’s acclaimed album Time Clocks and the DVD includes extra tracks such as “Mountain Time,” “Dust Bowl,” “Midnight Blues” “I Didn’t Think She Would Do It” and “The Ballad of John Henry.”
As always, Bonamassa surrounds himself with world class musicians including Reese Wynans (keyboards), Calvin Turner (bass), Lemar Carter (drums, percussion), Josh Smith (guitar), and Jade MacRae, Mahalia Barnes and Dannielle DeAndrea on vocals and percussion.
The CD and DVD open with Deepak Chopra narrating passages of Kahil Gibran’s The Prophet over percussion. Joe’s melodic guitar is heard as the rocking crowd pleaser “Notches” kicks into gear. Modulating his voice from soulful to powerful, Joe proves his mettle on this tune, a showstopper indeed. Watching Bonamassa play this inspired guitar solo is a treat for any guitar fan, including this one. The cinematography and sound are unparalleled.
The bluesy “The Heart That Never Waits” is a standout, with Wynans killing it on keys, backed by the incredibly tight rhythm section. Joe’s vocals sound a bit strained but the backing singers fatten the sound. His guitar playing is as you’d expect–soulful and exhilarating. The cinematography on the DVD pans from above the stage to Wynans, to the rest of the band, and of course to Joe who riffs on a blond Telecaster. Vocal powerhouse Jade MacRae sings a brief solo spot over Lemar Carter’s monster drumming.
The crowd goes wild.
After the rocking march of “Curtain Call,” the song “Mind’s Eye” slows things down, beautiful and simple in the most un-simple ways. Joe is at his best here on vocals and guitar. A song of heartbreak, it’s one of Bonamassa’s most moving and melodic.
Joe has an ear for melodies, his songwriting impressive on numbers like “The Loyal Kind,” the blues rocker with a 70s vibe “Known Unknowns” and the blues rocking “Just ‘Cos You Can Don’t Mean You Should.”
Mid way through the DVD, Joe and the band go to town on “Evil Mama,” a rhythmic standout. Once again, the rhythm section locks down while Wynans works his magic on B3. One can never get enough of the famed keyboard player. The song is a seamless rocking number that includes Joe’s devil-in-the-details guitar solo played on a Les Paul. One of the benefits of the DVD, is seeing Joe and the band digging deep and grooving.
When Bonamassa takes his foot off the gas like on the DVD-exclusive “Midnight Blues” by Gary Moore, that’s when it gets real. Soulful isn’t just a word here on this slow blues gem.
On the DVD, Joe closes the show with a story about writing with the noted songwriter Will Jennings, adding a dose of humor as he launches into “Mountain Time” a mid-speed rock ballad from his 2002 album So, It’s Like That .
Video bonus features for the DVD include “Dust Bowl” and “The Ballad Of John Henry.”

Review: Joe Bonamassa – Mind’s Eye – 2023: Video single from new live album
The three-time GRAMMY-nominated guitarist and 25x Billboard chart-topper Joe Bonamassa has released a mind-blowing live rendition of “Mind’s Eye,” a standout track from his most recent studio album ‘Time Clocks.’ Featured on ‘Tales Of Time,’ his sprawling and expansive live concert film and album shot at the breathtaking Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Colorado, the psychedelic influences of the song were augmented by the stunning visual backdrop produced by the iconic Kevin Shirley, serving to highlight the beauty of the music. Tales Of Time is set to release April 14th via J&R Adventures in CD/DVD, CD/BR, vinyl, and digital formats.
The live video captures a stratospheric performance by the blues-rock titan, as his virtuoso guitar style and unique technique and flair elevate the evening to an almost heavenly high.
“The song has a very Pink Floyd feel,” commented Roy Weisman, CEO of Bonamassa’s J&R Adventures label, upon the song’s original release. “The whole ‘Time Clocks’ record is about a journey, and ‘Mind’s Eye’ gives you a fun glimpse of what could be swimming around inside someone’s mind.”
“This live show represents our most progressive and largest production to date, focusing on my most ambitious studio album to date,” adds Bonamassa . “My band was a force of nature on this show, and it truly was a special night.”
“Mind’s Eye” soars to a whole new level on the Red Rocks stage. Bonamassa is deeper water than he has ever been here, combining psychedelic influences, intensely personal lyrics, and his always-impressive guitar work. The band behind him burns with a cool, blue flame and drives Joe higher and higher. The stage production is an added bonus and makes the performance complete. Want to know why Bonamassa is the king? Listen once and you’ll get it.
Cited by Guitar World as “arguably the world’s biggest blues guitarist,” Bonamassa is known for taking risks and venturing into uncharted territory throughout his wide-ranging career. ‘Time Clocks’ marked his most raw, rocking studio album yet, with American Songwriter sharing, “Bonamassa pushes into fresh territory while staying within a blues-based framework,” and “there is more than enough proof in this sprawling set that Bonamassa doesn’t intend to rest on his laurels or take his star status in the blues-rock genre for granted.”
The release of “Mind’s Eye” coincides with the launch of Bonamassa’s U.S. Spring Tour 2023, which kicked off in Charleston, West Virginia this week. The Spring tour will conclude with Bonamassa’s Keeping The Blues Alive at Sea VIII, set for March 13-17, departing from Miami, Florida to Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic. The festival line-up includes legendary artists like Little Feat, Dion, Bobby Rush, Robert Randolph Band, Joanne Shaw Taylor, Jimmy Vivino, and more.
KTBA at Sea is one of the largest fundraisers for Bonamassa’s Keeping The Blues Alive Foundation , aiding in its mission to promote music education by providing grants and resources to schools and musicians in need. Bonamassa also just announced “Keeping the Blues Alive presents: Joe Bonamassa & Friends,” a special two-night performance run with Styx and Don Felder at Northwell Health at Jones Beach Theater on Saturday, August 12th and Bethel Woods Center for the Arts on Sunday, August 13th.
Bonamassa and his long-time manager Roy Weisman recently launched Journeyman LLC, a full-service artist management, record label, concert promotion, and marketing company that builds awareness for independent artists worldwide. Journeyman provides the infrastructure needed to jumpstart the careers of exceptional independent artists, who are too often overlooked by the major labels or concert promoters while circumventing the resistance of typical “gatekeepers” who don’t support indie acts. “I wanted to take what I’ve had to learn the hard way to create a company that could make navigating this process a little easier,” Bonamassa explains.

JOE BONAMASSA @ UTILITA ARENA, BIRMINGHAM 14/05/23
It’s almost an hour into this show before Joe Bonamassa speaks to the audience. When he does, he explains that this first show in the second city for five years, is the last of the tour. Then he adds the crucial point. “And that means”, he reasons, “that once a tour we get to play like there’s no tomorrow, and that night is tonight.”
That might explain the vibe. There’s a sort of reckless abandon in the playing, a rawness which is great to see from someone so wonderfully polished, but it doesn’t explain the whole Bonamassa package.
That comes in the encore. The only other thing he really says in his two and a quarter hours. He talks about “the song that changed my life”, the one he recorded 17 years ago, altered the chorus of and began the phenomenon. “Sloe Gin” is stunning too. The first time (I think) it’s been played on this UK run, but when he plays the solo at the end, it underlines how special he is.
He’s here with a similar set to that which he played last year – still only one, the bombastic yet haunting, “The Heart That Never Waits”, from the wonderful “Time Clocks” album, which is a shame – and that night I wrote “Joe Bonamassa stands apart. In years, decades even, to come, people will talk about him. He may be the best guitar player in the world (in truth, as a non-musician I consider this to be someone else’s business)” and all of that still applies here, but here, you realise how he’s got there: and the answer is by having the most incredible band around him.
“Evil Mama” does its thing. Its the first vehicle for all of the band to shine. There are 12 others. So, yes there’s a jaw-dropping solo on “Dust Bowl” but then there’s “Love Ain’t A Love Song”, a soul-filled slice of fun, that sees a band with a mastery of it’s craft. The backing vocalists of Danielle De Andrea and Jane MacRae are to the fore here and the way they sing is central to things.
There’s a couple of covers in the middle of the set that weren’t in last years. Coco Montova’s “I Want To Shout About It” is turned into something from the Jersey Shore, Southside Johnny is in the air, but “Double Trouble” is a showstopper. Reese Wynans who knows a thing or two about being in a band called Double Trouble after all, is at his best. Indeed, he works overtime as so good is his work in the next one “I Didn’t Think She Would Do It” that bassist Calvin Turner fans him playfully.
There’s a sense of playfulness around everywhere you look, even on the highly personal “Conversation With Alice” on which, JB doubles down on his claim that Josh Smith “is the best guitar player on this stage” by letting him loose with the solo.
“Lonely Boy” as always, sees hair let down and handbrakes off (as much as any Bonamassa performance is) but ZZ Top’s “Just Got Paid” has the heaviest riff of the night, and a drum solo from Lamar Carter which rather exemplifies how good he is (he’d been superb throughout).
Which brings us back to “Sloe Gin”. The one that’s a cover but no one knows is a cover, and the last one of the tour.
There’ll be other tours. The hardest working musician around lives on the road, and if he keeps on picking musicians this good to join him, at the age of 46, and 17 years after his life changed, then Joe Bonamassa is only just getting started.

Actually, my feelings are between nothing special and great. I enjoyed myself, but it seemed like there was a lot of the same. He is an amazing guitarist, but the musicality wasn't there for me.

Can't fault the playing, but I came away disappointed. I thought he a was too self indulgent and turned recognisable songs into noodling. I've seen Joe before and he was much better last time. Even John Henry became unrecognisable. Sorry.
just witnessed an amazing performance by Joe last night at the arena, he had that guitar talking! his band were so tight, a wonderful night and can't wait to see him again.
