Trois tours du but

Introduction

Always wanted to work in Formula One? Then join the Voyager-AirShaper F1 team!

We've created a virtual challenge to optimize the aerodynamics of the Voyager-AirShaper F1 car through AirShaper simulations . The current design started life as a visual styling exercise - featuring a bespoke blue livery - 3D modelled by Voyager . But the car is just that – a styling model. A 3D model created to look stunning and realistic, but not engineered to perform well in terms of aerodynamics.

It doesn't comply with the official regulations, and we don't intend to make it comply. Rather, this exercise is about how you can tweak an existing design to perform better in terms of aerodynamics through modest and realistic changes. And we'll do so based in your input!

We've run aerodynamic simulations on the reference car – the current styling model. Both feature rotating wheels , moving ground and an adaptively refined mesh , but they differ in terms of accuracy:

This already poses the first challenge - which results will we use?

When it comes to running CFD simulations, you'll always need to make a compromise. Using the Regular Simulation will make it easier on your hardware to process data, the simulations will be faster and easier to run, etc. You'll be able to run more simulations with the same "teraflops" CFD budget, just like real F1 teams. If you're working on large flow structures, this may be enough. But when looking at small scale vortices, or need to mesh small details, it may not be sufficient.

For example, the downforce is higher on the Advanced simulation. In part, this is due to the fact that the Regular mesh was not detailed enough to capture the small gaps between the various wing elements. Actually, even on the Advanced simulation some gap areas are not captured properly!

Design challenge #1 Think carefully about which data to use for which area on the car.

voyage formule 1

Analyzing the data

We've added links to download the 3D model & report, to visit the online 3D results and to download the full simulation data. Again, we're facing challenges:

  • 3D model: you'll notice the STL surface quality is fairly low in some locations (and it will likely not improve anytime soon). How does this affect results?
  • Report: go through the full report and analyze the forces, the aero balance, the convergence graphs etc to get a feeling of how useful the simulation really is.
  • Online visualizations: the 3D pressure clouds are particularly interesting to spot areas of flow separation / drag. Also, through the "Forces & moments" tab on the left, you'll be able to click on components to analyze their individual drag & lift (like the front wing etc).
  • Simulation data: download the full simulation data and process the results in paraview – see this video . You can analyze every small detail in the flow by creating your own streamlines, pressure maps, and so on. Mastering paraview is a great skill for your aerodynamics career!

Design challenge #2 Use the online viewer and paraview to gain insights into the flow and share your findings.

voyage formule 1

Improving the car

The car does not comply with the official regulations and we don't intend to make it to. Nevertheless, the goal of this challenge is to come up with solutions that are realistic and stay close to the rules:

  • Don't simply increase the size of the wing, reduce the size of the sidepods, … . That's too easy – no fun in that!
  • Focus on improving flow quality in critical areas. Spot areas of separation and understand why it happens.
  • If you have the time, please do go through the official F1 rules to support your suggestions.

We've set some arbitrary goals:

  • Improved aero balance: not even 20% (-0.302 / -1.523 = 19.8%) of the downforce is going to the front wheels. The goal: increase the front downforce to 25% .
  • More downforce: for circuits with lots of corners, downforce is crucial. So find ways to improve the overall downforce by 10% .
  • More efficiency: the downforce to drag ratio is just 1.7 (1.523 / 0.896). Aim for a Cl/Cd ratio of 2.0 or more .

In reality, things are far more complex, with cars chasing each other, cornering simulations and so on. But for the sake of simplicity, we'll focus on an isolated car going in a straight line at a constant speed of 200 km/h.

Sharing your suggestions

To achieve our goals, we will use your input!

Just drop your thoughts on the AirShaper Reddit channel (use the flair "Voyager-AirShaper F1"):

  • Analysis: drop your insights on where you think the flow can be improved. Support your insights with post-processing screenshots of the 3D viewer / paraview.
  • Suggestions: drop your sketches on how you think the 3D model should be modified.
  • 3D model: if you want, you can also modify the 3D STL model directly. Contact us to get the Blender file.

We'll screen the Reddit channel regularly and gather design input. As soon as we have enough input, we will create an updated 3D model, run a simulation and share the results on the Reddit board!

Design challenge #3 : drop designs on the AirShaper Reddit channel

Aero Update 1

A big thanks to everyone who has contributed to the F1 challenge on our AirShaper Reddit channel ! We sat together with the talented designers at Voyager to implement most of the suggestions, resulting in aero update 1 (Download 3D Model here ):

voyage formule 1

  • We implemented the design of Busor to have a more updated design
  • The spacing between the wing elements was increased to avoid mesh bridging
  • The sideplates were pushed inward at the front to reduce flow separation

The downforce on the front wing improved dramatically, with low pressure zones on the suction side being much more pronounced, now extending to the second and partially the third wing element.

  • The thickness of the strakes was reduced to avoid local flow separation
  • The "inlet angle" of the strakes was increased, to point more inward.
  • The "outlet angle" of the strakes was increased as well, to be outward instead of parallel to the driving direction of the car.

The result is less flow separation at the inlet and stronger vortices further downstream, resulting in a lower pressure and thus more pronounced suction effect across the majority of the underfloor.

The bib (sort of scoop around the central part of the underfloor) was added, grabbing some extra downforce (as the pressure on top of it pushes it downward - even though some of this is cancelled out as this higher pressure also acts on the surface above the BIB).

Other small changes include updated barge boards and a different nose angle.

The result is Aero Update one, featuring massive performance improvements:

Original Car - View Online Results

  • Drag Coefficient Cd: 0.896
  • Lift Coefficient Cl: -1.523
  • Aero balance: 19.8% front / 80.2% rear

Aero Update 1 - View Online Results

  • Drag Coefficient Cd: 0.87
  • Lift Coefficient Cl: -2.496
  • Aero balance: 33.4% front / 66.6% rear

That's a 64% increase in downforce while reducing drag by 3%, combined with an improved aero balance (more downforce at the front). It's a no-compromise, pure improvement in aerodynamic performance!

We explain all of this in detail in the video below:

Improving F1 Aerodynamics using AirShaper CFD simulations - The Voyager-AirShaper F1 challenge

UPDATE: we found an error in the simuolation setup for Aero Update 1: the rear wheels were positioned slightly above the ground. This created a small gap between the wheels and the ground, creating a venturi channel (converging-diverging channel). This strong acceleration of the air lowered the pressure (because of the Bernoulli effect), creating downforce on both rear wheels. Once corrected, we found that the downforce gain was not 64% but 44%. Still massive, but not as much as claimed previously. This goes to show just how sensitive CFD and aerodynamics are to small changes - our apologies!

View Corrected Online Results

Aero Update 2

Again a massive thanks to everyone who has contributed to this second Aero Update. It was brilliant to see visuals, sketches and even YouTube videos appear on our AirShaper Reddit channel ! As before, the guys at Voyager implemented most of the suggestions in 3D to get to aero update 2 (Download 3D Model here ):

voyage formule 1

  • The side pods were extended forwards
  • At the top, more curvature was added to the front half of the side pod and less curvature at the rear half to keep the airflow attached all the way to the engineered
  • In top view, the sidepod curvature starts earlier now, to have a less abrupt lateral push of the air outward. And the maximum width was reduced a bit, all to avoid the flow separation at the rear half of the sidepods.

The result is attached flow all the way to the rear of the sideopods. We still have a lot of flow separation at the inlets, as the air jumps across the sidepods. So there we still have room for improvement.

  • The inner fence was extended beyond the top of the underfloor to fight some of the flow curvature in that region
  • The exit angle of the inner fence was reduced to avoid local flow separation
  • The first, straight part of the fences was given a curvature. This curvature was gradually released towards the outward curvature of the fences, ti help initiate a stronger vortex. The result is a significant increase in downforce on the underfloor!

The BIB has been made sharper to reduce the local pressure buildup.

The airfoil design was not changed (that is the topic for Aero Update 3) but we moved from a double support arm structure to a single one. Also, the swan neck geometry was pulled forward, to reduce the separation it induces at the suction side of the wing.

  • The mirrors are now connected directly onto the top of the sidepods, eliminating the hozirontal support arm. The remaining support arm below the mirror has an outward curvature, to remove some of the air at the top of the sidepods.
  • The halo has been given a truncated section to reduce drag

The result is Aero Update two, featuring a further increase in downforce but in drag as well:

Aero Update 1 (corrected) - View Online Results

  • Drag Coefficient Cd: 0.881
  • Lift Coefficient Cl: -2.195
  • Aero balance: 37.4% front / 62.6% rear

Aero Update 2 - View Online Results

  • Drag Coefficient Cd: 0.91
  • Lift Coefficient Cl: -2.437
  • Aero balance: 36% front / 64% rear

That's a 11% increase in downforce at the cost of 3% more drag.

Formula One Aerodynamics Challenge - Part 2: side pods, underfloor, fences and more

Aero update 3.

We're happy with the added downforce but sad about the extra drag! So the goal for the third aero update is to reduce drag. We suggest working on the sidepods (flow separation at the intake) and the rear wing (we'll use proper airfoil designs this time) but all ideas are welcome! Just analyse the online results and download the 3D model to get started.

Deadline: Friday, Dec 23rd, 17:00 CET

The goals for this aero update:

  • Maintain current downforce levels
  • Reduce drag by 3%

If you wish to contribute, just head over to our AirShaper Reddit channel and drop your images / sketches / videos - thanks a lot!

The aging Voyager 1 spacecraft has a serious glitch, and NASA is pondering risky fixes

Nell Greenfieldboyce 2010

Nell Greenfieldboyce

The Voyager 1 probe, the first human-made object to reach the space between stars, has suffered a serious problem that NASA experts are struggling to understand and repair.

ARI SHAPIRO, HOST:

The Voyager 1 spacecraft rocketed off our planet in 1977. It's now about 15 billion miles away. That's farther out than any other object made by humans. And the spacecraft still talks to Earth. But as NPR's Nell Greenfieldboyce reports, lately its messages don't make any sense.

NELL GREENFIELDBOYCE, BYLINE: Voyager 1's problem started a few months ago, back in mid-November. Suzanne Dodd is the Voyager project manager.

SUZANNE DODD: It basically stopped talking to us in a coherent manner.

GREENFIELDBOYCE: The spacecraft is just sending back alternating ones and zeros. Her team has tried the usual tricks to try to reset things with no luck. It looks like there's a problem with the onboard computer that takes information and packages it up to send home. Dodd says this technology is primitive compared to, say, a car key fob.

DODD: The button you press to open the door of your car - that has more compute power than the Voyager spacecrafts do. You know, it's remarkable that they keep flying and they and that they've flown for 46-plus years.

GREENFIELDBOYCE: Voyager 1 and its twin, Voyager 2, have outlived many of those who designed and built them. To try to fix Voyager 1's current woes, the dozen or so people on Dodd's team have had to pore over yellowed documents and old mimeographs.

DODD: They're doing a lot of work to try and get into the heads of the original developers and figure out why they designed something the way they did and what we could possibly try that might give us some answers to what's going wrong with the spacecraft.

GREENFIELDBOYCE: She says they have a list of things to try. Since their go-to approaches haven't worked, they'll have to take measures that are more bold and risky. This could take weeks, months of sending commands to the spacecraft. Voyager 1 is so distant, it takes almost a whole day for a signal to travel out there, then a whole day for its response to return.

DODD: So we'll keep trying, and it won't be quick.

GREENFIELDBOYCE: In the meantime, Voyager 1's discombobulation is a bummer for researchers like Stella Ocker. She's with Caltech and the Carnegie Observatories.

STELLA OCKER: We haven't been getting science data since this anomaly started, and what that means is that we don't know what the environment that the spacecraft is traveling through looks like.

GREENFIELDBOYCE: That environment isn't just empty darkness. There's gases, dust, cosmic rays. Only the twin Voyager probes are far away enough to sample this cosmic stew, and only Voyager 1 is still able to take the particular measurements she needs.

OCKER: So the science that I'm really interested in doing is actually only possible with Voyager 1.

GREENFIELDBOYCE: Now, she wasn't even born when the Voyagers launched. For other scientists who've been with the Voyager program from the start, Voyager 1 is like an old, dear friend who suddenly has been hit with a terrible illness.

TOM KRIMIGIS: Well, frankly, I'm very worried.

GREENFIELDBOYCE: Tom Krimigis is with the Johns Hopkins University's Applied Physics Lab.

KRIMIGIS: My motto for a long time was 50 years or bust (laughter), but we're sort of approaching that.

GREENFIELDBOYCE: So even if this current crisis gets solved in a couple of years, the ebbing power supply will force managers to start turning off science instruments one by one. The very last instrument might keep going until 2030. After that, Krimigis says both of these legendary space probes will basically become space junk.

KRIMIGIS: Pains me to say that.

GREENFIELDBOYCE: And while the spacecraft will keep moving outward, each carrying a set of golden records that have recorded greetings in many languages, Krimigis doubts that any alien will ever stumble across Voyager and have a listen. Nell Greenfieldboyce, NPR News.

The Formation and Essence of Authentic Emeralds

An image showcasing the mesmerizing journey of an emerald's formation

As I explore the captivating realm of emeralds, I am entranced by their origins and charms.

These precious gemstones are born deep within the Colombian mountains, where rare elements and geological forces collide. The intense heat and pressure create magnificent crystals that slowly cool over time.

To determine their authenticity, one must examine their flaws, as even the slightest imperfections do not diminish their value.

The vibrant green hues, ranging from subtle to intense, make emeralds highly coveted. Their durability ensures they withstand the test of time, making them a valuable investment.

  • Emeralds are formed deep in the mountains of Colombia through the combination of rare elements brought together by geological forces.
  • Flaws in color or shape indicate the authenticity of emeralds, and slight imperfections do not reduce their value.
  • The intense green color of emeralds, especially grass-green, is considered the most valuable, and personal preference plays a role in selecting the green color of an emerald.
  • Emeralds are durable gemstones, resisting abrasion and scratches over time, making them suitable for long-lasting jewelry.

Geological Forces and Rare Elements

I learned that emeralds form deep in the mountains of Colombia, where rare elements like beryllium and chromium are brought together by geological forces. These forces create the perfect conditions for the formation of emeralds, with high temperatures and pressures needed for their growth.

The mining techniques used to extract emeralds from these mountains are precise and require skilled workers. Emerald mining is a significant part of Colombian culture, as emeralds hold great value and are often used in traditional jewelry and artifacts. They are considered a symbol of wealth and prestige.

The beauty and rarity of emeralds have made them highly sought after worldwide. Colombian emeralds are known for their exceptional quality and vibrant green color, making them truly unique and treasured gems.

Formation Process of Emeralds

The combination of rare elements and geological forces deep in the mountains of Colombia brings about the formation of emeralds. These precious gemstones are highly valued for their vibrant green color and durability.

When it comes to mining emeralds, various techniques are employed to extract the gemstones from the earth. This includes both traditional methods, such as hand tools and manual labor, as well as more modern techniques, such as mechanized mining and underground tunnels.

However, the environmental impact of emerald mining cannot be ignored. The process of extracting these gemstones can lead to deforestation, soil erosion, and water pollution. It is crucial for mining companies to implement sustainable practices and minimize their impact on the environment.

Additionally, efforts must be made to rehabilitate and restore the areas affected by mining activities to ensure the long-term preservation of these valuable natural resources.

Indicators of Authenticity

Color and shape flaws in emeralds indicate their authenticity and do not diminish their value. When it comes to emeralds, it’s important to understand how to distinguish between genuine stones and imitations. Here are some methods of emerald testing to help you make an informed decision:

Visual Inspection: Examine the color and clarity of the stone. Genuine emeralds typically have a deep, rich green color with slight imperfections.

Refractive Index: Use a refractometer to measure the refractive index of the stone. Authentic emeralds have a specific range of refractive index values.

Magnification: Inspect the stone under a microscope to identify natural inclusions and flaws. Synthetic emeralds often lack these natural imperfections.

UV Testing: Shine ultraviolet light on the stone to see if it exhibits the characteristic red fluorescence of genuine emeralds.

The Value of Brilliance and Intense Green Color

When shopping for emeralds, it’s important to consider the value of brilliance and an intense green color. The shine and identity of emeralds are significant factors in determining their worth. Personal preference also plays a role in selecting the color of an emerald. Emeralds have a unique green color that can vary from stone to stone. To give you a better understanding, here is a table that illustrates the different shades of green:

The intensity and hue of the green color can greatly affect the shine and identity of the emerald. Ultimately, it is up to personal preference to choose the perfect green color that speaks to you.

Unique Green Color Variation

I personally find it fascinating how emeralds can have such a wide range of green shades.

The green color grading of emeralds is a complex process that involves evaluating the intensity and hue of the stone’s green color. Factors affecting color intensity include the presence of impurities and the amount of chromium and vanadium in the crystal lattice structure of the emerald.

Impurities can create a yellowish or bluish tint, while higher levels of chromium and vanadium result in a more intense green color. Light and dark tones can also affect the overall appearance of the stone.

Gemologists use specialized tools and techniques to grade emeralds based on their green color, ensuring that each stone meets the highest standards of quality and beauty.

Durability and Longevity

Emeralds are known for their durability and ability to withstand abrasion and environmental factors, making them a long-lasting investment. When considering the durability of emeralds, it is important to understand the difference between durability and hardness.

While emeralds may not be as hard as diamonds, they are still substantial gemstones that resist scratches and abrasion over time. Environmental factors such as dirt and sand do not easily damage emeralds, further enhancing their longevity.

This durability ensures that emeralds can be worn and enjoyed for years to come without losing their beauty or value. So, when investing in emeralds, you can have peace of mind knowing that they will remain stunning and resilient, even in the face of everyday wear and tear.

Emeralds as the Perfect Gift Choice

Choosing an emerald as a gift is an excellent choice because of its unique green color and durability. Emeralds are not only stunning gemstones but also hold historical significance. They have been revered for centuries and are considered birthstone options for the month of May.

The historical significance of emeralds can be traced back to ancient civilizations, where they were believed to possess healing powers and bring good fortune. In addition, emeralds have been cherished by royalty and nobility throughout history. They have adorned the crowns and jewelry of kings and queens, symbolizing wealth and power.

Today, emeralds continue to be highly prized and are sought after by collectors and jewelry enthusiasts alike. When choosing an emerald as a gift, you are not only selecting a beautiful gemstone but also a piece of history and tradition.

How Do Geological Forces and Rare Elements Contribute to the Formation of Emeralds?

Geological forces and rare elements combine to form emeralds deep in the mountains of Colombia. These forces bring together beryllium and chromium, creating the perfect conditions of high temperature and pressure for the formation of these precious gemstones.

What Is the Specific Process by Which Emeralds Are Formed Under High Temperature and Pressure Conditions?

The formation process of emeralds is like a slow-cooking recipe. Under high temperature and pressure conditions, rare elements like beryllium and chromium combine, resulting in the growth of large crystals with intense green color.

How Can One Determine the Authenticity of an Emerald Based on Its Flaws in Color or Shape?

Determining authenticity of an emerald is based on flaws in color or shape. Imperfections do not devalue the stone. Expertise is necessary for accurate evaluation and comparing emeralds.

Why Do Emeralds With Slight Imperfections Still Hold Value in the Market?

Emeralds with slight imperfections still hold value in the market because they exhibit authenticity and uniqueness. Market demand for imperfect emeralds is driven by their rarity and the belief that flaws add character and individuality to the stone.

What Factors Contribute to the High Value of Emeralds, Such as Brilliance and Intense Green Color?

Brilliance and intensity, along with rarity and demand, contribute to the high value of emeralds. These stunning gemstones captivate with their vibrant green color and dazzling sparkle, making them highly sought after in the market.

A Look At NASA's Groundbreaking Voyager 1 Mission - And Where The Probe Is Heading Next

A gencies such as NASA are responsible for giving us a more detailed picture of space, literally in the case of technology such as the Hubble Space Telescope and the James Webb Space Telescope (utilizing the tiniest SSDs ). The latter is currently orbiting the Sun one million miles from us, a fascinating case study in the way that we can bring the distant reaches of space (realms it's entirely unsafe and impractical for humans to venture to directly) to us.

Drones and similar machines, capable of exploring the most inhospitable environments imaginable, have been key to this. Humans have never been more than 248,655 miles into space (a feat achieved by Apollo 13 in 1970 on its journey 'around' the moon), but Voyager 1 has boldly gone far, far, far beyond that, offering us a privileged and unprecedented insight into the universe beyond our own.

This piece will explore the beginnings of the Voyager 1 project, its objectives, and how the mission has unfolded to date. It's also important to look at the future of Voyager 1 and where it's scheduled to go next.

The Concept Of Voyager 1

Jupiter and Saturn, the fifth- and sixth-furthest planets from the Sun, are approximately 601 million miles and one billion miles from the Earth respectively, at the furthest point in the planets' orbits. At their closest, these numbers shrink to a still-ludicrous 365 million miles and 746 million miles from our planet. With these being insurmountable journeys for even the most dedicated scientists, then, NASA needed an alternative way to get a closer look at these two gas giants.

Voyager 1, which set off on its journey on September 5, 1977, was designed with just that primary objective in mind: to reach both planets. A voyager in the truest sense of the word, it would gather remarkable information about those planets (and much more besides), and continue to provide such data for decades.

Voyager 1 was launched second, after Voyager 2, and is structurally just the same. The body of both probes consists largely of a 12-foot radio transmitter, and though they might look like rather humble craft, measuring at 28.2 feet long , these revolutionary probes have done some extraordinary work. Here's how it reached the first stop on its originally-planned adventure, Jupiter, and what it was able to learn on doing so.

When Voyager 1 Reached Jupiter

Monstrously large and difficult to miss as Jupiter may be, it wasn't until Voyager 1 that scientists were given an opportunity to study it up close and in painstaking detail, marking technological strides beyond Pioneer 10 and 11's own journeys earlier in the decade. The sheer length of the journey from Earth meant that it took the probe, capable of reaching speeds of more than 38,000 mph , almost a year and a half after launch to get within range to begin documenting the planet-gobbling gas giant .

From January to April 1979, Voyager's suite of scientific tools amassed readings about the planet as it passed by, and the snap-happy spacecraft collected around 19,000 images of it in the process. This bounty provided researchers a wealth of new information about Jupiter's composition, movement, atmosphere, and more.

A previously-unseen ring, rather less prominent than those sported by Saturn, was noted, theorized to have resulted from detritus left behind by numerous meteor impacts. The immense Great Red Spot, under the closest and most sophisticated watch in history, could be observed in terms of its impact on the wider planet's atmosphere, where winds swirl between and around each other.

A NASA statement, according to  Space , concluded that "possibly the most stunning of Voyager 1's discoveries was that Io has extremely active volcanoes," a unique feature in the solar system that results from the constant pressure of the moon's orbit of the planet. Even more revelations awaited when Voyager 1 reached Saturn.

Voyager 1's Study Of Saturn

It's no short hop from Jupiter to Saturn. In fact, it's a hop of around 403.3 million miles . This part of the journey, from the beginning of its Jupiter adventure to the beginning of its Saturn one, took around a year and a half to complete: It came into range of Saturn in August of 1980.

Voyager 1 noted some interesting similarities between the two gas giants. Truly monstrous storms raged here too, with the volatile and hydrogen-heavy conditions supporting winds of 1,100 mph . Voyager 1's in-depth case study provided a new understanding of the makeup of the planet, allowing science to look at even its most previously-well-documented elements anew.

Saturn, of course, is also ringed, a fact that makes its composition so iconic. What we did not know until the probe provided evidence, however, is that what we see isn't just one thick ring, but a complex structure of smaller rings (dubbed ringlets by NASA ), in layers.

Besides the two planets themselves, Voyager 1 had a particular interest in Saturn's moon Titan. From August to November 1980, this moon was also monitored by the probe, its atmosphere and relationship with Saturn investigated using ultraviolet and other technologies. With that, Voyager 1 had completed the journey it was primarily designed for, and an astonishing journey it was. The spacecraft was far from finished, however, as there were much further reaches yet to explore.

The Voyagers' Journey Beyond Saturn

Voyager 1 still had a surprising amount left in the metaphorical tank after its study of Saturn ended. The even-more-distant Uranus and Neptune didn't get the fly-by treatment as Jupiter and Saturn did, due to the logistics of the course it took to get the best look possible at Titan, but it passed by them nonetheless, and further still.

Its twin, Voyager 2, would investigate Uranus and Neptune more closely, discovering 11 new moons of the former up to February 1986 and observing Neptune three years later. Maintaining functionality of the spacecraft's instrumentation this far away required some complex work to keep NASA communication technology up to the task, but the work was a remarkable feat of human ingenuity. February 1998 marked an astonishing record for Voyager 1: still speeding away, it became the furthest-reaching man-made object ever.

It remained so, and continues to, with Guinness World Records officially declaring it to be the Most Remote Human-Made Object in October 2022. At the time, it was 23.631 billion km  from Earth. In fact, it's so distant that it comes somewhat closer and further from the planet as Earth orbits the Sun. Let's see where it's been on its great odyssey out of the Solar System, and where it may be heading.

The Most Incredible Leg Of Voyager 1's Journey, And Where It's Going Next

Having wrapped up its investigation of Saturn, it may have just become floating space junk, but that's far from the truth. In 2012, it exited the Heliosphere, essentially the area under the influence of the Sun's strongest magnetic field. As of that August, then, it has been passing through space outside of the Solar System itself, another first in human history.

As of February 6, 2024, NASA reports that Voyager 1, more than 46 years into its journey, is approximately 15,148,155,240 miles from us. Voyager 2, meanwhile, is a little behind at 12,677,967,494 miles. Both, however, are in the unprecedented territory of interstellar space. The Plasma Wave Subsystem, Low-Energy Charged Particles, Cosmic Ray Subsystem, and Magnetometer for both probes are still functional (as is Voyager 2's Plasma Science system), meaning that although their ultraviolet and radio functionalities are among the systems to have been deactivated to maintain fuel, they're still transmitting some information back to the planet.

NASA suggests that Voyager 1 will reach the beginnings of the Oort Cloud, an icy Solar System 'shell' half the distance to Alpha Centauri, in approximately 300 years. From there, it's on course towards a constellation called Ophiuchus. I How much longer its radioisotope thermoelectric generators will last remains a mystery, but Voyager 1 and 2 have had quite the extraordinary and pioneering journey to date.

Formula One is the most popular annual car-race series in the world. Its global reach allows people from all over the world to attend its races. Attending a race can be an adventure in itself, and a race-goer can expect to experience a new country and culture and interact with people from all around the world. Formula One visits roughly 20 countries on every continent except Africa.

Understand [ edit ]

The locations of Formula One racing remain fairly static throughout the year, with only the dates of the races subject to year on year changes. More countries have been hosting a Grand Prix, especially in Asia. Recent additions include circuits in Azerbaijan , the Middle East , Singapore , the United States and Mexico .

Weekend structure [ edit ]

Formula One events take place over three days, referred to as 'the weekend', starting with practice sessions on Friday, qualifying on Saturday, and culminating with the race on Sunday. Monaco is only exception to this, where the practice sessions are by tradition held one day earlier on the Thursday, leaving the Friday free. The routine below outlines a normal non-sprint weekend:

  • Friday (Thursday in Monaco) kicks off the weekend with two 1-hour Free Practice sessions: one in the morning (FP1) and one in the early afternoon (FP2). Qualifying for some supporting championships may also occur in between or after the sessions.
  • Saturday features the third and final Free Practice session in the morning (FP3) before the official qualifying session, which most often begins at 1PM local time. The qualifying lasts 60 minutes, after which support championships go back on track with either qualifying sessions or races depending on the category.
  • Sunday is the busiest day of the weekend, comprising entirely of races. Support championship races will bookend the day, with the Formula One race beginning anywhere between 13:00 and 15:00 local time, depending on location (the Australian and Abu Dhabi Grands Prix begin late afternoon, the Singapore Grand Prix at 20:00). A Formula One race can last up to 2 hours of running time or 3 hours from race start (whichever comes first; red flag stops the running time), but barring delays or wet weather 70-90 minute races are expected.

As of 2021, a new format that includes the Sprint has been introduced at some tracks. The routine below outlines a sprint weekend:

  • Friday kicks off the weekend with the only Free Practice session in the morning (FP1). Teams will make their best efforts to utilize the limited practice before Qualifying at the FP2 timeslot.
  • Saturday is the Sprint day, kicked off with a Sprint Shootout (read: shortened Qualifying) at the FP3 timeslot, followed by a 100-km Sprint Race that lasts roughly a third of the main race on Sunday. Offers limited points for the Top 8 and pitstops are optional, however results from the Sprint Race do not affect the main race.
  • Sunday works the same way as a normal non-sprint weekend.

Support races [ edit ]

With only six hours of action over three days, the crowd can get restless when the Formula One cars aren't racing around the track. However, the Formula One championship is joined by many other supporting championships over the weekend to keep the track alive. The races may be shorter and the cars may be slower, but don't discount the excitement (and carnage) they may bring.

  • Formula 2 (F2) is the feeder series to F1 and is present at most European and Middle Eastern races. Formula 2 cars look like smaller versions of F1 cars and their drivers are eager to cut their teeth into world-class racing, as finishing well in this series helps to acquire the prestige and Super License points necessary to make it to F1. Formula 2 features 30-minute practice and qualifying sessions on Friday and Saturday respectively, and one race each on Saturday and Sunday. The series has a reputation of delivering future racing stars, and several of the current crop of F1 drivers, such as Lewis Hamilton, Lando Norris, Alexander Albon, and Charles Leclerc were once Formula 2 drivers.
  • Formula 3 (F3) is a rung down from Formula 2, with young drivers getting their first taste of international racing. The series is present at most European races. Like Formula 2, there are 30-minute practice and qualifying sessions on the Friday and Saturday before two races on the Saturday and Sunday. While successful F3 drivers typically graduate to F2, a notable exception is current F1 series champion Max Verstappen, who went directly from F3 to F1.
  • Porsche Supercup is a sports car series where all drivers compete in identical Porsche 911 GT3 Cup cars. Most current Porsche factory drivers have competed in Porsche Supercup.

Bahrain [ edit ].

Bahrain Grand Prix - Bahrain International Circuit [dead link] , Sakhir

  • Date : early April
  • Tickets : No information available
  • The Bahrain International Circuit became the first circuit in the Middle East to host a Formula One race in 2004. The race has been held in March/April for the entirety of its run to avoid the scorching summer desert heat. However, the race is usually the hottest of the year. The grandstands provide relief from the sun but when walking around the paddock make sure to stay hydrated. Being in the middle of a desert, the landscape is barren and dull, not unlike much of the racing here. Local civil unrest can be a distraction.

Chinese Grand Prix - Shanghai International Circuit [dead link] , Shanghai

  • Date : mid-April
  • Tickets [dead link] : No information available
  • The Shanghai International Circuit is a modern autodrome built for the first Chinese Grand Prix in 2004. Good vantage points are the hairpin at the end of the 1 km straight, which always has overtaking action, and the main grandstand along the start/finish straight, from which one can view 80% of the circuit. Crowding is never a problem and the event typically undersells, leading to many empty seats. General admission is very cheap compared to grandstand entry, but there are no viewable video screens.

  • The only Grand Prix in Asia for a long time, the Suzuka Circuit is notable for being the site of numerous championship deciders in the 1990s. The Japanese fans are an enthusiastic bunch and seldom leave the grounds before the sun has set. The best spot for viewing overtaking is along the main straight where one can see moves into the final chicane and into the first corner. There is an amusement park on site for the quieter parts of the weekend.

Belgian Grand Prix - Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps , Wallonia

  • Date : late August
  • Possibly the best racing track in the world, the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps features everything that makes a circuit great: challenging high speed corners, large changes in altitude, plenty of overtaking opportunities, and a long history of producing exciting racing. The Eau Rouge corner is perhaps the most famous in F1, and Blanchimont and Stavelot are well known in motorsport circles. The best viewing opportunities are at the first corner ( La Source ) and the climb up to Les Combes . The circuit is notorious for its own micro-climate that can see drastically different conditions at each end of the track so be prepared for anything.

  • The Hungaroring is notoriously twisty and makes overtaking very difficult. The first corner and the chicane are best bets to see some racing action. Being in Central Europe during the height of summer, temperatures can get very hot, and there is little shading. Grandstands along the start/finish offer some shade. Wet weather has only affected one Hungarian Grand Prix in more than 25 years, so an umbrella would only be needed for protection against the sun.

  • The Italian Grand Prix is one of the classic events on the Formula One calendar and is home to the Ferrari team, where their fans are at their most passionate. The Autodromo Nazionale Monza is located inside a huge enclosed park, the Parco di Monza , which is also a natural reserve. The best viewing spots are at the chicanes and at the Curva Parabolica . Be aware of pickpocketing and the sale of illegal tickets in crowded areas near the circuit's gates.

Monaco Grand Prix - Circuit de Monaco [dead link] , Monte Carlo

  • Date : late May
  • Located on the streets of Monte Carlo , the Monaco Grand Prix is one of the most prestigious automobile races in the world. Overtaking does not feature heavily at the Circuit de Monaco . Viewing is largely restricted in the grandstands; being in a city means buildings block out a majority of the rest of the circuit, although it does provide a great opportunity for fans to get closer to the action than at any other venue. Unlike every other Grand Prix, Friday is a day off, with the cars taking to the track on the Thursday instead.

Netherlands [ edit ]

Dutch Grand Prix - Zandvoort Circuit , Zandvoort

  • Tickets prices not announced yet
  • A historic track which hosted its first F1 race in 1952. Formula 1 left the circuit in 1985 but returned in 2021. Traffic into the venue can be notoriously heavy, not only for cars but also for public transport.

  • A historic track which hosted the first F1 race in 1950, Silverstone is one of the fastest on the calendar and provides plenty of great viewing opportunities. Camping is allowed on site with a permit. Traffic into the venue can be notoriously heavy, not only for cars but also for helicopters, with the circuit becoming the busiest heliport in Europe on race day. Take precautions to deal with the unpredictable British summer weather. Despite having a modern layout and expensive ticket prices, the circuit still retains an old-fashioned vibe, and is still very much an event for the fans.

Australia [ edit ].

Australian Grand Prix - Melbourne Grand Prix Circuit , Albert Park, Melbourne

  • Date : mid-March
  • Tickets [dead link] : Grandstand: Adult: $320-565 (4 days)
  • The Australian Grand Prix takes place at the Melbourne Grand Prix Circuit in Albert Park, which is normally a public park the rest of the year. Plenty of good viewing spots and compared to many tracks are quite close to the circuit's edge. General entry is good value with the most popular spot being Brocky's Hill at the back part of the circuit. It is advisable to take a picnic rug or foldable chair if choosing to sit there.

Get in [ edit ]

Tickets [ edit ].

Entry to a circuit requires a ticket. Tickets can be bought for the whole weekend (all three days) or for one specific day (they get more expensive as the weekend goes along). There are generally two types on sale:

  • General admission tickets are the cheapest and most easily available, and they do not restrict the ticket-holder to a particular section of the track. Many circuits have viewing banks that general admission ticket-holders can use, although these fill up very quickly so get there early for a good spot. If the viewing areas are full then there are many parts where standing is available. These tickets do not give the comfort of grandstand tickets, so make sure adequate protection from the elements is brought along. The ground may be uneven or wet underfoot so bring suitable footwear and something to sit on.
  • Grandstand tickets give the best view of a particular section of the track and often have a large screen in view so none of the action is missed. Ticket prices are scaled, with the most expensive stands giving the most protection from the elements along with the best view. Tickets for grandstands are most commonly booked in advance so the buyer can choose a specific seat, although a few may be available on entry. There may be a few grandstands at some circuits that have no seat allocation, although these don't always give the best view.

Traffic [ edit ]

By car [ edit ].

Formula One Grands Prix are popular events, so preparations should be made for heavy traffic. If arriving by car, Fridays are often the quietest day, but don't expect to just sail through. Traffic queues on the weekend can be ridiculously long, and unless you are a dedicated soul arriving before sunrise expect to be waiting upwards of half an hour. The same can be said for leaving. A vast majority of the crowd tends to try and leave at the same time, so unless you wish to leave early (and miss some racing) or wait until late in the evening (when there is no racing going on) be prepared for more waiting. The parking areas tend to be extremely large so make a note of anything that can make identifying where you've parked easier. No one wants to be searching for their car at the end of a tiring day.

By shuttlebus [ edit ]

Some circuits may offer a shuttlebus service, designed to alleviate traffic problems. Cars are parked some way from the track and shuttlebuses run at frequent times to the track in their own designated lane, so this can make entry a much quicker process.

By helicopter [ edit ]

Arriving by helicopter is the most stylish way for the fan to enter, if you are lucky enough to be a VIP. Most tracks have some kind of heliport, if not a purpose-built one then a field within the circuit perimeter is used. All the worries associated with queueing and waiting are largely foregone, and helicopter is surely the most stress-free way of getting in.

Get around [ edit ]

Walking is generally the best option (and sometimes the only option) for getting from one area to another. Circuit maps are printed within official programs and on boards dotted around the track. If you do not have a print version of the circuit map consider taking a picture of one of the boards with your phone or camera. Bridges and service tunnels connect the interior of the circuit with the exterior.

Buy [ edit ]

There will be many stalls situated just outside the viewing areas selling all kinds of F1 and motorsport memorabilia. Stock typically includes official team/driver merchandise and clothing; pictures and paintings; branded gear such as umbrellas, binoculars and flags; DVDs and other media; and collectible racing car models. Official programs will also be on sale. Be prepared to pay high prices (remember you're mainly paying for the brand), but they can make excellent souvenirs from the event and the gear can be used again for future events. These can usually be purchased online for cheaper prior to the weekend.

Sleep [ edit ]

With these tracks often located away from city centers, hotels near many of the circuits can sell out up to a year in advance, so if you are intending on staying nearby book early. Some venues, such as Silverstone, allow camping on fields adjacent to the circuit. You will probably need to book a camping ticket to take advantage of this, and these too usually sell out fast so book early if you want to take this option.

Stay safe [ edit ]

Despite the high visibility of the 'motorsport is dangerous' notices Formula One has quite a good spectator safety record. However, no matter how safe a restricted part of the track may seem you should not venture onto these areas as they can be quite dangerous. Previous spectator fatalities at Formula One races have been caused by the spectators in question being on a restricted part of the track. Sticking to the proper areas drastically reduces the chances of being hurt in an accident. Moving vehicles operate in the paddock areas and along service roads, so keep your eyes and ears open. If someone is hurt, there are medical tents with trained staff at various points around the track; these are marked clearly on circuit diagram boards.

The following general precautions should also be taken:

  • Earplugs are highly recommended especially for young children and those going for the first time. Formula One cars are ear-damagingly loud and having 20 cars over a sustained period of 90 minutes can cause harm. Earplugs will probably be available at the track and some circuits offer basic versions for free. If you are intending on taking a radio to listen to the on-track commentary use a pair on in-ear monitors that can double as earplugs.
  • Sun protection is advised as many races take place in the summer with only grandstand seats getting any meaningful shade. Wide-brimmed caps are handy, and sunglasses are optional.
  • Waterproof clothing is a necessity especially for those not in sheltered areas. Even if the forecast is dry, some areas (for example Spa-Francorchamps) may experience large changes in conditions over a small area. Take a strong umbrella to cope with windy weather, otherwise bring a waterproof coat.
