The Statue of Liberty is America's most iconic and enduring symbol of freedom. A gift from the French, "The Statue of Liberty Enlightening the World" – its official name – was dedicated in 1886. It was often the first thing immigrants to the United States saw as they sailed to Ellis Island. The statue holds a torch in one hand and a tablet inscribed with the date of the Declaration of Independence in the other. She stands a little more than 300 feet tall and is made of copper, which has oxidized over time to create her signature green patina. To make the most of your visit to this UNESCO World Heritage Site, consider these key tips.

Several independent tour companies offer tours to the Statue of Liberty that include private guides and extra perks like priority ferry boarding. Some also combine trips to the Statue of Liberty with visits to other NYC attractions , such as the 9/11 Memorial. However, these companies are not official vendors of the national park service, meaning there may be unnecessary charges.

How to Tour the Statue of Liberty On Your Own

Getting There: You'll need to take a ferry to reach Liberty Island. Statue City Cruises is the official ferry provider for the National Park Service, and the only ferry service authorized to provide transportation to and from Liberty Island. Before you board, you'll go through an airport-style security screening. The ferry departs from two locations: Battery Park in New York City and Liberty State Park in Jersey City, New Jersey. Ferry operators recommend arriving about 30 minutes ahead of your reserved time.

You can reach Battery Park via public transportation, such as the subway or bus. The 4 and 5 trains stop at Bowling Green; the M5, M15 and M20 bus routes also stop within walking distance of the ferry. Driving is an option, but parking is limited. If you're planning to do more sightseeing, heed the advice of reviewers and sign up for a hop-on, hop-off bus tour , many of which stop at Battery Park.

For ferry departures from New Jersey's Liberty State Park, you can arrive via the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail. Plenty of parking is available, for a fee, if you choose to drive.

Tickets: Tickets, which cost $24.50 for adults and $12 for kids ages 4 to 12, cover round-trip ferry transportation and access to specific park attractions. To access both the pedestal and the crown, you need to reserve and purchase timed tickets before your trip. Tickets to the pedestal sell out quickly, and you'll likely need to book tickets to the crown at least three months in advance.

Experiences: Visitors can stop by the Information Center and explore the Statue of Liberty Museum The museum houses artifacts, including the original torch, as well as multimedia displays detailing the statue's history and creation. Meanwhile, the on-site Information Center offers brochures and tour schedules. Kids can join the Junior Ranger program at the center by picking up a booklet of activities to complete to earn a special badge. Any visitor is welcome to take a free Park Ranger guided tour of the statue's exterior, which explains how the statue was made, its symbolism and more, or use a self-guided audio tour.

The pedestal stands at about half the height of the monument and boasts panoramic views of New Jersey, New York City, the New York Harbor and Ellis Island. Brave-hearted visitors will want to take the narrow, double-helix steps to the statue's crown for a bird's-eye view of the city. There are 162 steps from the top of the pedestal to the top of the crown. There is no elevator and the park service discourages this trek for visitors who suffer from heart and respiratory conditions, claustrophobia, acrophobia and vertigo. Children must be at least 42 inches tall to safely climb the stairs.

What to Bring: You will need an ID to pick up your tickets from will call (if you choose to get your tickets there). If you plan to visit the crown, each ticket holder will need to show a valid ID along with the ticket that bears their name; minors without ID are exempt from this policy. Locker facilities to store personal items during your visit are available at the base of the statue; lockers accept quarters only.

No large bags (carry-on luggage, large suitcases, etc.) are allowed on Liberty Island. Backpacks, strollers, large umbrellas and food and drink are prohibited inside the statue.

Restrooms: Restrooms are available in the gift shop and in the statue's lobby.

Traveler Tips: Travelers love seeing the Statue of Liberty up close. Multiple tourists recommend a morning visit to make sure you have enough time to see everything, especially if you combine your trip to Lady Liberty with a visit to nearby Ellis Island. If you purchase a ferry ticket for 2 p.m. or later, you will not be able to go to both islands, but will have to pick either Liberty or Ellis Island. Reviewers recommend allotting at least half a day to see everything and suggest going in the morning to avoid crowds. They also stress booking tickets to the crown several months in advance to make sure you obtain tickets.

Keep in mind the Statue of Liberty ferry schedule varies slightly depending on whether it’s low or peak season, so I recommend checking ahead of time.

What is the best view of the Statue of Liberty?

The answer depends on what kind of view of the Statue of Liberty you want. If you want an up-close view, the best option is to see it from the water, on a boat tour. That said, you can get amazing views of Lady Liberty from the air on a helicopter tour, or from One World Observatory since it’s the best observation deck in NYC that’s closest to Liberty Island.

When is the best time to visit the Statue of Liberty?

The best time to visit the Statue of Liberty is in the morning because you can avoid the crowds and enjoy more time at the landmark.

How do you see the Statue of Liberty for free?

The cheapest way to see the Statue of Liberty is by visiting the parks that overlook Liberty Island, like Liberty State Park in New Jersey or Battery Park in Manhattan. You could also take the Staten Island ferry, which cruises past Liberty Island. While it doesn’t get as close as the Statue of Liberty ferry, it’s a free activity in NYC that grants you decent views.

With that, you have all the info you need to book your Statue of Liberty tour ! I’m sure one of these tours will appeal to you, but if you have any questions, feel free to leave me a comment below. I’ll be happy to help you out! Until then, have a wonderful trip.

Guide to Visiting the Statue of Liberty

I t’s arguably one of the most popular tourist attractions in the United States, and it’s a place most visitors to New York City want to visit. However, a combination of its popularity, as well as its island location, make the Statue of Liberty a frustrating place to visit.

Statue of Liberty visitors plan months in advance – it’s not as easy as waking up and walking over. Many guests in NYC wonder how to visit the Statue of Liberty because it isn’t straightforward.

You do have to plan to have the most seamless, cost-effective trip to the Statue of Liberty. It’s one of the most popular things to do in NYC. If you want to visit Lady Liberty yourself, you’ll want to read your guide to visiting the Statue of Liberty well in advance of your trip.

I remember the first time I saw the statue up close. I was on an 8th-grade field trip, and remember how big the statue looked up close. It looks rather small across the water at Battery Park.

Getting to the statue was much easier then than it is now, in the post-9/11 world. If I could offer one very important piece of advice, it would be to pack your patience with you.

It’s an incredibly frustrating time to get over to the Statue of Liberty, especially if you have tickets for the pedestal or crown. Being patient and being prepared for the chaos will improve your experience.

How to Visit the Statue of Liberty

Purchasing your statue of liberty tickets.

Once you arrive at Battery Park, you’ll find numerous vendors offering tickets and tours to the Statue Of Liberty and the Ellis Island Immigration Museum. You are going to walk right past those vendors because you are going to purchase your tickets in advance.

Many of these vendors are offering scams and/or overpriced tickets, so you’ll want to avoid them. You must purchase tickets from the official site (or the official ticket office) to avoid the higher price.

Statue Cruises is the only authorized ferry service to Liberty Island and the Statue of Liberty, and you can pre-purchase these ferry tickets. They are very reasonable (at the time of publication, they were $24.50 for adults and $12 for kids aged 4-12 years old) and your ferry ticket will include access to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island.

If you want to access the pedestal of the statue or the crown, those tickets need to be reserved in advance. There are only a limited number available, and Statue of Liberty crown tickets are especially limited.

Note that there is no additional fee for Statue of Liberty pedestal access tickets, but it can be very difficult to get last-minute tickets to these. Book in advance.

Taking the Statue of Liberty Ferry

There are two departure points for the Statue of Liberty ferry – one in NYC at Battery Park, and one in New Jersey at Liberty State Park. While you can purchase your tickets at the Castle Clinton ticket office, we recommend getting a reserve ticket online in advance .

As mentioned above, there’s no additional fee for pedestal or crown access, but you will want to make an advanced reservation.

You’ll have to go through airline-style security at the terminal before entering the boat. Just like the airport, you’ll have to put small items like wallets, cell phones, or belts in a bin or one of your bags. Drinks, however, are allowed.

Once you go through the security, you’ll be led into a waiting area for the boat. Ferries depart every 20 minutes, so there’s almost always a boat loading or unloading. Entering the boat does feel a bit like a cattle call – everyone just pushes to the front to board the boat. If you have young kids, you’ll want to hold hands as you enter the boat.

The ferry boats that we were on were all a bit different, but they were pretty much the same. Boats had three levels, and guests could sit on any of them. There were plenty of seats, as well as restrooms and a snack bar. The ride isn’t very long at all, so before long, you’ll be at the Statue of Liberty National Monument National Park.

The ferries stop at both the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, so you’ll want to get off at the first stop for the statue. After disembarking the boat, you’ll be right at the Statue of Liberty National Monument.

The Statue of Liberty National Monument and Liberty Island

Most people generally get grounds-only tickets, so they can access almost everything on the grounds except for the actual statue. There’s also the Fort Wood area of the grounds, which is only accessible to those who have crown or pedestal tickets.

You can spend as much time as you’d like on the grounds. After getting off the boat, you can pick up an audio tour at the tent to the right. These audio tours are included in your ticket and come in multiple languages. I’d recommend getting one because it’s included and will provide you with additional context about the monument.

There’s also the new Statue of Liberty Museum, which is located on the grounds. There, you’ll find the original torch of the Statue of Liberty, which came down in 1984, as well as a theater and other exhibits. This new museum is accessible to anyone with grounds tickets, whereas the old museum was only open to those with pedestal or crown tickets.

At the grounds, you’ll also find areas where you can get stunning views of Manhattan. We enjoyed spending time just taking pictures of the city and New York Harbor.

There’s also a gift shop, restrooms, a cafe, and more. During our visit, the outdoor cafe was open with outdoor seating. It was a beautiful day, so we enjoyed getting our lunch and sitting outside.

Food is what you’d expect at a tourist attraction, although they do have a delicious-looking lobster roll. Guests can bring their own food, but you won’t be able to bring a cooler on the ferry. If you do bring food, pack it in a small bag.

If you want to combine your visit to the Statue of Liberty with a trip to Ellis Island, you’ll want to start your journey early in the day. We got in line for the ferry at about noon and ended up spending most of our day at the Statue.

Visiting the Pedestal

We had pedestal tickets during our visit, so we headed there right after we got off the ferry. When visiting the crown or pedestal, you’ll have to go through additional security. There are some things allowed on the grounds that are not permitted in the statue.

Locker rentals are offered, so you can store any items if necessary. Lockers accept change only, and there’s a change machine right at the lockers.

Once you pass by the lockers, you can enter the queue for the statue. Tickets are checked to make sure you have pedestal or crown access. Then, you can walk to the security screening area.

There are some items that are not allowed inside the Statue of Liberty. These include (but are not limited to): strollers, laptop, food and drinks (water in clear containers is permitted), and backpacks (including drawstring bags). See the full list here . Note that some of these things, like strollers, are allowed on the island, just not in the Statue.

The name “pedestal” may be a bit misleading, as you do get a great view from this point. While you may think it’s the very base of the statue, it is about 10 stories high. There are stairs to climb, although an elevator that goes most of the way up to the pedestal is available.

After you reach the top of the pedestal, you can go outside and see the city. You can also continue up to the crown if you have those tickets. There are security personnel checking out tickets, and only those with actual crown tickets can enter.

As you walk down from the pedestal, you’ll be able to go outside to Fort Hood. There, you’ll have great views of both the city and the statue. Only those with pedestal or crown tickets can enter this area, so it typically isn’t overly crowded.

We were thrilled to be able to go to the pedestal and get that close to the statue. We didn’t spend too much time there but did spend enough time to explore and take lots of photos.

Tours of the Statue of Liberty

In addition to the audio tours, there are also guided tours at the Statue of Liberty. These are included with your tickets and are ranger-guided. They can’t be booked in advance, and the schedule varies daily. If you are looking for additional information, a guided tour would be a great option, especially since they are free!

Once you are done at the island, you’ll need to get the ferry back to Manhattan or New Jersey. Once again, you’ll line up, waiting for the ferry to arrive. Make sure you are on in the right line for the correct ferry.

While we were there, the line for the ferry back to Battery Park was significantly longer than the line for the New Jersey ferry. It was a very busy day on a holiday weekend, so we had to wait for one ferry to completely fill up and leave before we got to the front of the line to board the ferry.

The ferry will make a quick stop at Ellis Island to drop off/pick up passengers before returning to Battery Park.

The Statue of Liberty is open most days, except for Thanksgiving and Christmas Day.

Frequently Asked Questions About Visiting the Statue of Liberty

Access is offered to the pedestal and the crown of the Statue of Liberty. However, you do need tickets, and these aren’t always available. Reserve as early as possible.

You may be able to, but it’s best to get them as early as possible. Purchase them from the authorized outlet so that you don’t have to overpay.

Two men on either side of a bar.

A local’s travel guide to New York City: what to eat, see and do in three days

Top destinations in New York include a ferry ride, shopping for watches in Chinatown and a Brighton Beach bender

I first came to New York City by accident, after a miscommunication with my father led me to believe my (long-deceased) mother had been desperate to visit the city before she died.

Years later I found out that my mum had actually wanted to go to Paris. But I still had a great time in New York, and ended up moving here a couple of years later.

On that first trip I did all the main tourist things which, owing to the miscommunication, I had thought my mother had wanted to do: I went up big buildings, looked at big buildings, drank in bars beneath big buildings.

It was great and everything, but there’s much, much more to do here – especially if you like eating, riding about by subway and ferry, and bargaining for knockoff luxury goods.

Day 1: Boating and brownstones

A lot of people have heard of the Staten Island ferry , and for good reason. It’s free to travel on the big orange boats between the southern tip of Manhattan and Staten Island. The route goes right past the Statue of Liberty, and offers amazing views of lower Manhattan.

As a boat lover, I’d also recommend taking the NYC ferry . It has a flat fare of $4 and operates up and down the East River, passing under bridges and allowing riders to snoop at waterside buildings.

If you’re starting in Manhattan (which you probably are), take the southbound ferry from East 34th Street to the Brooklyn neighborhood of Dumbo, which stands for “down under the Manhattan Bridge overpass”. It’s here where everyone with an Instagram account gets their shots of both the Manhattan Bridge and the (older, better-known) Brooklyn Bridge. Plenty of people will visit this area then turn their back on Brooklyn, but I’d recommend sticking around New York City’s most populous and, depending whom you speak to, trendiest borough.

A crowd of people walk on a path over the Brooklyn Bridge while two young women pose for a photo.

Pop by Jane’s Carousel , an exquisitely restored 1922 ride which is plonked between the bridges, and then walk south through Brooklyn Bridge Park. You’ll go past several piers – once working docks now transformed into leafy picnic and sport areas. There are magnificent views across to Manhattan. It’s a nice spot to propose to a partner, as my little brother did last year. If you don’t want to do that, but do like to play soccer or basketball or roller-skate, you’re in luck.

After you hit Pier 6, where there’s a pleasant, if expensive, rooftop pizza restaurant called Fornino , walk up Atlantic Avenue for some shopping and coffee at Goose Barnacle , an independent clothing store with a hidden bar in the back. The owner, Dave Alperin, a fourth-generation Brooklynite, is very friendly and knowledgable about the area and can give you tips about everything from where to buy the best sandwich ( Lillo Cucina Italiana – try the Mamma Roma) to the location of a semi-secret basement speakeasy ( Le Boudoir ) nearby.

From there I’d take a bus or cab to Fort Greene, a very pretty neighborhood whose townhouses are the sort of Brooklyn thing you see in the movies, and grab dinner at Olea . If you make it before 6.30pm, there’s a great happy hour.

Day 2: Rude T-shirts and not-quite Rolexes

Manhattan’s Soho neighborhood has all the posh shops, so if you have money, or like looking through windows at expensive clothes and bags, walk east along Prince Street from West Broadway. There are nice buildings to look at around here too – the newly constructed towers that abound in the city are largely absent in this neighborhood. Stop in at Fanelli Cafe , a neighborhood stalwart that has been around since 1847, for a coffee or some food, then head south along Broadway to Chinatown.

People ride an old-style wooden worse carousel.

There are lots of great dim sum places, including Golden Unicorn , whose large fancy dining hall is located on the second floor of a marble-esque building. From there I’d take a walk along Canal Street, dipping into sidestreets for cheap souvenirs – snow globes, little statues and that sort of thing – and bizarre T-shirts (many of which are very rude).

Chinatown also does a roaring trade in imitation watches and handbags. So if, like me, you will not and cannot spend $30,000 on a watch but have about $100 to spare, you can get (to my eye) a fairly good imitation. The food markets along Canal Street also sell real nice timepieces – they even work – if you fancy sticking it to big watch. You’ll find plenty of “designer” bags too.

Hopefully you’re hungry again, because Great N Y Noodletown is, per its name, great – especially the roast pig on rice.

From there I’d head farther south and stop in at Whiskey Tavern , the friendliest bar I’ve ever been to in my life (and I’ve been to a lot of bars). They print out personalized welcome signs that they will stick to your table or behind the bar, which sounds a bit naff – but isn’t. The real reason to come is to chat to locals and regulars. It’s also one of the closest bars to city hall, which means there’s a regular stream of “Just Married” couples doing shots of whiskey and eating chicken wings.

If you’ve still got energy, and like singing or shouting, go to Up Stairs , a karaoke bar tucked behind a nondescript doorway on Canal Street. Drinks are cheap, and it gets packed with revelers.

Day 3: Seaside shenanigans

If, like me, you’re a fan of once-glamorous seaside attractions that are now in a state of faded glory, then take the F train to Coney Island. People seem to overlook the fact that the city is surrounded by water, and while Coney Island isn’t the nicest beach for bathing (for that, try Fort Tilden or Jacob Riis Park), there’s loads to do.

Kick things off by watching a Brooklyn Cyclones game. The Cyclones are a feeder team to the New York Mets. They play at Maimonides Park, tickets are usually dirt cheap and easy to get, and you’ll be able to enjoy a nice view of the Atlantic Ocean. If you want a snazzy memento, buy a beer in a foot-long plastic baseball bat. Sometimes they let the crowd “run the bases” after the game, which is a lot of fun, especially if you’ve had more than one of the baseball bat beers.

A person sits on a bench on a boardwalk with birds circling and snow on the ground.

After the exhilaration of taking in second-tier baseball, walk east towards the Cyclone , one of the oldest and, as far as I can tell, rickety-est rollercoasters in the US. The wooden ride – described as “pretty extreme” by Coaster Critic – will celebrate its 100th birthday in 2027, and it sounds and looks its age. Buyer beware.

Once you’ve stumbled off the ride, go for a settling drink at Ruby’s , the oldest bar on the boardwalk. You can take in the black-and-white shots of Coney Island in its 1930s glory, and if you’re feeling brave, buy a cardboard box full of clams.

Every Friday night from late June to September there is a fireworks show on the beach, which draws a large crowd. You could take it in while eating borscht and sipping coffee or vodka at Tatiana’s , a Russian restaurant-cum-nightclub a 10-minute walk along the boardwalk from the Cyclone.

Side note: you don’t need to wait until summer to visit. I went a day after it had snowed, and it was brilliant.

Question time

How many days do you need to visit new york city.

Three would be fine. If you want to take in all the Instagram favorite destinations, then maybe four.

What’s the most-visited attraction? Is it worth it?

Times Square. And not really. But it’s near enough to other attractions that if you’re heading to a Broadway show then you might as well walk through it.

When is the best time to visit?

The peak of summer can be boiling hot, and winter can be freezing cold. May through early July and September through October are usually a safe bet.

How expensive is it?

New York City is expensive. If you’re staying in Manhattan you’d be (very) lucky to get a hotel room for about $200 a night – but bear in mind that there will usually be hefty taxes on top of that. A bog standard coffee will cost you about $5, a pint anywhere from $6 to $10. The subway fare recently went up: it’s $2.90 a ride now.

Raffles, Whitehall, London

For a truly memorable visit to London, you can stay in the former office of Winston Churchill, Lawrence of Arabia and the infamous John Profumo. The Old War Office was where Richard Haldane, Britain’s first secretary of war, was a key player in the founding of MI5 and MI6 in 1909. Tread the same hallways as Ian Fleming when he worked in intelligence during WWII and the spies (both men and women) who inspired his famous character James “007” Bond. The building has been used in various Bond films, as the MI6 headquarters in Octopussy (1983), A View to a Kill (1985), Licence to Kill (1989), Skyfall (2002) and Spectre (2015).

Granville suite bedroom at Raffles London

After eight years and a painstaking $1.4 billion renovation, using only British materials except Italian marble, this famous building has reopened as Raffles London at The Old War Office (OWO). Guests are greeted with opulence and grandeur from the moment they enter, with high ceilings, oak-panelled walls and a stunning grand staircase with a huge glass chandelier and original Edwardian clock. It is the first property in the UK for the legendary Raffles Hotels & Resorts. Founded in Singapore in 1887, Raffles Hotels can be found around the world in cities including Paris, Istanbul, Warsaw, Bali, Manila, Jakarta and Boston.

Changing of the Horse Guard at Horse Guards Parade in Whitehall in London.

The London hotel in the imposing Baroque style, Grade II* listed building, built in 1906 on Whitehall. is in a prime location for sightseeing, across the road from the changing of the Guard and just around the corner from Westminster Abbey and Big Ben. Designed by Scottish father and son architects, William and Clyde Young, the War Office was built on the site of the Palace of Whitehall, home for centuries to English monarchs, including King Henry VIII. When it opened in 1906, the OWO housed over 1,000 offices and two-and-a-half miles of corridors that some staff used bicycles to traverse.

Known as The Whitehall Wing, this can accommodate up to twelve guests, one of the largest luxury hotel wings available in London.
