Moncton modernizes heritage walking tour

Walking tour updated to be more high-tech and user-friendly.

The city of Moncton's aging heritage walking tour is getting a much-needed facelift.

The free, self-guided tour has been offered since the early 2000s, and gives tourists an overview of dozens of heritage properties in the city's downtown. 

But it was heavily constrained by its original technology, including the high cost and low speed of cell phone data at the time, meaning it had to rely on spotty Wi-Fi coverage.

"Early 2000s data plans weren't like they are today," said Lawren Campbell, the city's heritage and culture co-ordinator.

"[With] data plans now … people are whipping up their phone to TikTok all day long. So that is not an issue anymore like it was in 2004."

Tour facelift

The new iTour Moncton stops at 30 locations through the downtown core, including stops at the Aliant Tower, the Transcript Building and the Capitol Theatre.

When someone stops at a location, they're given the name of the site, a short YouTube video, and a small text description of the history of the location.

Campbell said the tour is set up so people can either walk the whole route, or just pull up information on sites they find interesting.

"You can click any one you want and any sequence you want," said Campbell. 

"If you're only interested in one building, click on one. If you want to do the whole tour, start wherever you want and do the whole tour."

Heritage tourism

Campbell said heritage tourism is a major, but underappreciated, part of the tourism industry.

"People go to Boston, New York, wherever and they want to see a show and they want to shop, but they're also doing those hop-on, hop-off bus tours to hear the history of the places," said Campbell.

Campbell said the city hopes to refresh some of the YouTube videos embedded in the tour to make sure the information is up to date. They're also looking at adding more stops along the tour.

"Probably by the end of the summer, we'll probably have a half a dozen more sites," said Campbell.

DAY 1: Arrive Halifax, NS Arrive in  Halifax  and check in to your accommodations which are ideally located in the downtown core of this vibrant and cosmopolitan urban centre on the  Atlantic Ocean . Meet your Tour Director or Driver/Guide and fellow travelers this evening at a  Meet & Greet. Option: You may wish to add additional nights in Halifax to your vacation package.  Bursting with culture and rich history, Nova Scotia's capital city has much to offer. 

DAY 2: Halifax to Moncton, NB Explore the  Bay of Fundy  and learn about the world's highest tides as you meander its colourful coastline to  New Brunswick.   En route, explore the  Joggins Fossil Cliffs , a  UNESCO World Heritage Site , where you will see magnificently exposed layers of rock revealing the world's most complete fossil record of life in the "Coal Age" of 300 million years ago.  After crossing into  New Brunswick , an unforgettable culinary experience awaits as you enjoy a scrumptious lobster dinner on a lobster boat.*  Continue on to  Moncton  and check into your downtown hotel for the night. (Continental Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner) *This component is not available on the October 12, 2021 departure; the lobster dinner will be enjoyed at a restaurant in Moncton.

DAY 3: Moncton to Saint John, NB Experience a true natural wonder this morning at the  Hopewell Rocks  on the coast of the  Bay of Fundy . Marvel at these massive flower-pot shaped formations sculpted by the highest tides on the planet.  Travel through  Fundy National Park  on to Canada's first incorporated city,  Saint John,  on the southern New Brunswick coast.    Enjoy   a  city tour,  including the  Reversing Falls  where twice daily the  Bay of Fundy  tides force the  Saint John River  to reverse its flow.  Check into your  Saint John  accommodations for a two-night stay.  (Breakfast, Lunch)

DAY 4: St. Andrews by-the-Sea Day Trip Enjoy a day trip to picturesque  St. Andrews by-the-Sea  where the quaint charm of this coastal town is sure to captivate.   After a  Whale Watching Boat Tour  (weather permitting), the afternoon is yours to experience the friendly people, beautiful architecture, and rich marine life of this seaside gem at your own pace. (Breakfast, Lunch)

DAY 5: Saint John to Digby, NS Ferry back to Nova Scotia this morning and arrive in  Digby,  the scallop capital of the world,   where the fresh sea air and passionate Acadian culture combine to form an enchanting and historically rich town.  Check into the  Digby Pines Golf Resort & Spa  overlooking the  Annapolis Basin  on the  Bay of Fundy. (Breakfast, Dinner)

DAY 6: Digby to Halifax, NS Travel the lush Annapolis Valley where the French Acadians of Grand Pre made their first settlement in the early 1600's. Learn about this landscape's designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as fact and fiction blend to reveal the romance of the Land of Evangeline . Visit a local winery for a tour and tasting before returning to Halifax for a two-night stay. (Breakfast)

DAY 7: South Shore Touring Discover the rustic charm of the renowned fishing village of Peggy's Cove where you will enjoy breakfast overlooking one of the most photographed lighthouses in the world. Travel the South Shore and on to the UNESCO World Heritage Town of Lunenburg, renowned for her fleets of Grand Banks' fishing schooners.  Take a walking tour to fully experience one of the most remarkably preserved colonial settlements in the New World, and visit the Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic to learn about the town's famous seafaring heritage. (Breakfast)

DAY 8: Halifax to Charlottetown, PE Learn about the Mi'kmaq people at  Millbrook Cultural & Heritage Centre  before crossing  Confederation Bridge , the world's longest continuous multi-span bridge, to  Prince Edward Island.     Check into your  Charlottetown  accommodations   for a two-night stay and enjoy a theatre performance by local entertainers at the  Confederation Centre of the Arts  (a substitution may be necessary due to the theatre schedule). (Continental Breakfast)

DAY 9: Prince Edward Island Touring Enjoy a  free morning  in Charlottetown, Canada's birthplace, or join a complimentary  walking tour  of the city.  This afternoon, tour the scenic  North Shore  of the island.  Drive by red cliffs, white beaches, gently sloping sand dunes and green fields of  Prince Edward Island National Park  and visit  Anne of Green Gables Heritage Place , the alluring inspiration of Lucy Maud Montgomery's classic books.  Experience true Maritime hospitality this evening at a traditional hall-style  lobster supper . (Breakfast, Dinner)

DAY 10: Charlottetown to Baddeck, NS Ferry over the  Northumberland Strait  back to  Nova Scotia  and proceed to  Cape Breton Island ,   the Scotland of North America, via the  Canso Causeway .  Visit  Alexander Graham Bell National Historic Site  in  Baddeck  to learn of the many accomplishments of this genius who made his home on the island before checking into your accommodations on the  Bras d'Or Lake  where you will spend the next two nights. DAY 11: Cabot Trail Touring Experience one of the most stunningly picturesque drives in North America today as you tour the  Cabot Trail  which winds around the rocky splendor of Cape Breton's northern shore, ascending to the incredible plateaus of  Cape Breton Highlands National Park .  Look-offs offer unforgettable vistas of Cape Breton's rugged coastline so be sure to have your camera on hand .   (Breakfast, Boxed Lunch, Dinner)

DAY 12: Baddeck to Halifax, NS The Fortress of Louisbourg National Historic Site  awaits today. This reconstruction of the original French town and fortifications, depicting one-fifth of the settlement of 1744 New France, is the largest of its kind in North America. Your tour continues along the shore of the Bras d'Or Lake to the mainland, and back to Halifax for one last night in the Maritimes. (Breakfast)

The Sightseeing Bus Wars of New York City

You’ve probably seen the TopView Sightseeing ticket sellers in their hooded red jackets, standing opposite the Hershey’s store in Times Square, pushing bus tours to One World Trade or Wall Street. You’ve also probably seen sellers for Gray Line and Big Bus in their also red outfits, standing outside the M&Ms store and offering pretty much the same “hop-on, hop-off” rides around the city. They can be hard to tell apart, which is one of the reasons they’ve been engaged in various legal battles for years. And the occasional headbutt. “It’s a very complicated history,” TopView’s lawyer, Maurice Ross, tells me.

And really, it is. Earlier this month, the New York Court of Appeals reinstated a claim made by TopView that Big Bus and Gray Line have operated as a secret monopoly, giving new life to a yearslong drama that TopView sees as a David and Goliath story about who gets to shuttle tourists to the Fearless Girl statue. The suit alleges that Big Bus and Gray Line, among others, have used their “market share to ‘shut out’” TopView from the sightseeing hustle. (This isn’t Gray Line’s first time in court over monopoly allegations: In a 2015 settlement, Gray Line and another company called City Sights were ordered by the New York attorney general to pay $7.5 million and give up dozens of stops on their Manhattan routes to settle an antitrust suit filed by the state and federal officials and allow other companies into the market.) TopView also alleges that Big Bus and Gray Line have “impugned” its reputation in an effort to tank its business relationships. But the great tour-bus wars of New York City aren’t just playing out as courtroom dramas — which brings us to the headbutting.

The city’s sightseeing-by-bus industry has never exactly been peaceful, as ticket sellers tried to get an edge on one another while going after the same pool of tourists. But things came to a new head in June 2018. “These guys are motherfuckers. I’ll beat the shit out of you, piece of shit motherfucker. I’ll kill you!” a Gray Line worker yelled at a TopView employee stationed near the Empire State Building, according to a lawsuit filed by TopView that year. A few months later, at the same spot , Gray Line ticket seller Pitoh Poyodi was approached by TopView ticket sellers who allegedly wanted to poach him. When he declined, a TopView seller assaulted him. (The New York Post says he was headbutted and kneed in the stomach.) “There’s always fighting over territory around here,” one TopView seller told the Post . The result of these fights was a heavily negotiated memo on “ Conduct Guidelines ” signed by each of the named companies. This agreement included explicit directions to not physically assault competitors and guidance around smack talk, which was also rampant among ticket sellers. (Forbidden statements include: “They don’t have buses,” “They are being investigated by the FBI and Homeland Security,” “They don’t show you Statue of Liberty,” and “Their bus drivers are mean.”)

But the rivalries persisted all the same: In March 2019, just a month after the agreement between the tour companies was finalized, TopView filed a federal antitrust lawsuit against Big Bus, Gray Line, and other tour companies. Two months later, Big Bus filed its own suit against TopView, claiming its ridership was declining in part because of “the abusive, deceptive, reckless, exploitative, and dangerous practices” of TopView. Big Bus also claimed that in a single 24-hour period in January 2019, “over two hundred 5-star reviews” were posted to TopView’s Google Business profile, the majority of which allegedly came from Nigeria. Also included was an allegation that TopView’s use of the color red in the design of its tour buses — Big Bus buses are also red — was part of a pattern of “unscrupulous business conduct.” By allegedly copying Big Bus in this manner, the suit read, TopView “has unfairly arrogated to itself the benefit of millions of dollars that Plaintiff and its affiliates have invested in recent years in market research, strategic planning, and product design.”

Ask former employees, though, and it seems there are no good actors involved here. A former Big Bus tour guide seemed delighted that the companies spent so much time squabbling: “They are two miserable companies,” he tells me. “Let ’em fight it out and spend their money on lawyers.” A former TopView worker had this to say about his old bosses: “My feeling would be that whatever TopView is coming up with is just like a gangster ploy.” Former TopView employees allege that they had pay docked if they were late or had minor uniform deviations and were asked to report drivers for leaving the bus to use the bathroom. (TopView is owned by venture capitalist Asen Kostadinov, who declined to comment on the litigation and did not respond to specific workplace allegations. Big Bus, which is mostly owned by a private-equity firm called Exponent Private Equity and entered into a renewable consolidation agreement with Gray Line in 2020, also declined to comment on the legal proceedings and did not respond to questions about its apparent merger with Gray Line.)

One might think that the pandemic wallop to the city’s tourism industry quieted things among the bus rivals, and for a brief moment in 2020, it did look as though there may be a truce in the world of the hop-on bus tour. Big Bus voluntarily discontinued its 2019 case in 2020, proposing that both parties throw out their suits. “Prudence suggests that the parties focus on restoring their businesses and devoting resources to protecting and rehiring employees, rather than litigation,” the claim reads. “Moreover, because essentially no one is riding tour buses in New York City now (or for the foreseeable future), there are no reviews (false or otherwise) appearing currently on travel websites.” It was, perhaps, an opportunity to forget the alleged anti-competitive practices, forget the street fights, forget the purportedly fake reviews from Nigeria. TopView declined. When I asked Ross about the company’s commitment to the fight, he seemed surprised by the question. “We had good claims,” Ross says. “Why would we drop our claims?”

The additional optional tours were also good, we did the Metro tour which I highly recommend, we also paid for the Kremlin tour. The hop on hop off has three different lines all included. The red route is quite exciting and takes about an hour. The bus comes every 10 to 15 minutes. However the other two routes take about two hours each and buses come every 30 to 40 minute period. If the bus is full then you have to wait at the stop for the next bus. So personally I feel that not much can be seen this way. I definitely was not impressed. The boat element was wonderful, we saw some amazing parts of Moscow along the river side. The bus element was very disappointing as it only started at 10am and was finished by 6:30pm. It was extremely warm when we were there and it would have been great to do the tour in the cool of the day. There was also no air conditioning in the down stairs part of the bus. The ear phones were small and sometimes the commentary did not link up with the sites you were seeing. The green bus takes you on a longer route and ours took two and a half hours due to the heavy traffic. I would not recommend this trip unless it is raining or you want to fill in time. The bus didn't stop at many points. Were were unaware a couple of times at what point we were and missed them. Headphones and maps were provided. Would recommend one should check out the route map before going and decide which places to stop in advance, this way one can manage and enjoy the tour more and us it more effectively.! And in the boat even tough we were 90% English speaking tourist at least, the tour guide spoke 95% of the time in Russia, and only 3 sentences in English, I really counted how many times she spoke in English. And at the end she asks us if we have any questions? Of course I told her I couldn’t ask her anything since I didn’t understand 95% of what she was saying. The boat tour is not worth it, just take the bus that would be my advice. Second minus is the waiting times, in the boat they made us wait an hour before it departed, and in many stops with the buses waiting times of 20-30 minutes.
