The pair chatted about their joint tour in a Monday appearance on The View after a jubilant performance of Donny Hathaway’s “This Christmas.”
“We were here five years ago to announce our Broadway Christmas special, which was exciting for us. We’re getting old, Ruben, we are about to celebrate our 20th anniversary from the year we were on Idol , and so Ruben and I are are hitting the road together with a 20th anniversary tour all across the country through the year,” Aiken told The View ‘s hosts. “We’re starting out this spring and we’re going to be celebrating the last 20 years since we did Idol and the music we’ve gotten to make and the friendships we made along the way.”
During the pair’s appearance on The View , they also revealed that they will be returning to American Idol in the upcoming season for the finale, as the finale date will coincide with their season two finale episode’s.
The second season of American Idol aired from January to May of 2003. Studdard faced off against Aiken in the finals, and ultimately won. Following the show, the pair remained close, which Aiken discussed in a Dec. 3 Instagram post .
“We don’t get to choose our family. Most family is predetermined by blood; some are predestined by God to come into our lives. I’ve got one brother who was born into my family and one brother who the good Lord introduced me to in 2003,” he wrote.

Now, two decades later, they’re still here.

Ruben Studdard, Clay Aiken bring pitch-perfect voices, boy band moves to Newark, Ohio
Timeless songs. Big personalities. Show-stopping performances.
Those were some of the elements that made âAmerican Idolâ must-see TV in its heyday 20 years ago. You really had to be there to truly understand, but Ruben Studdard and Clay Aikenâs concert Tuesday night in Newark captured some of that magic.
Season-two winner Studdard and runner-up Aiken brought âTwenty: The Tourâ to the Midland Theatre, where they told stories, delivered comedy bits and performed numbers that made them household names during their âIdolâ era. The reception from the packed venue was warm; most of the audience appeared to be people who contributed to the pool of about 124 millionvotes cast for the men in 2003âthough the family-friendly show would be appealing to anyone who appreciates powerful singers and classic R&B and pop.
More: Ruben Studdard and Clay Aiken talk 'American Idol' memories and music ahead of Newark show
Backed by a solid live band, Studdard appeared onstage first, singing his signature cover of âSuperstar,â made popular by Luther Vandross. Then, the literal spotlight was on Aiken, who sang Journeyâs âOpen Arms.â
Then, both performersâwearing matching shiny jackets resembling a grandmotherâs couch, Aiken jokedâjoined together for a cover of Elton John's "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me.â (Do yourself a favor and Google Aikenâs rendition with an impersonator on the season-five finale of âAmerican Idol.â)
After some funny banter, Studdard and Aiken launched into their own version of âMotown Weekâ on âAmerican Idol,â singing classics by the Temptations, the Four Tops, Martha Reeves & the Vandellas and others. When one sang lead, the other sang backup, along with another backing vocalist, while performing some famous Motown dance moves.
During one standout segment of the show, Studdard and Aiken used quick costume changes to launch into different songs. Studdard donned a curly wig to perform Rick James' âGive it to Me Baby,â and Aiken pulled on a glittery purple jacket to sing Whamâs âWake Me Up Before You Go-Go.â
When the guys changed into jean jackets, they tore through songs by New Kids on the Block, Boyz II Men, the Backstreet Boys and *NSYNC. Aiken actually did the signature dances during âYou Got It (The Right Stuff)" and âBye Bye Bye.â
Following a 15-minute intermission, Aiken appeared onstage by himself and offered the first line of a classic Lionel Richie song: âHello, is it me youâre looking for?â
The audiences shouted a resounding âYes!â
Studdard appeared and playfully scolded Aiken for trying to steal the show.
Spring fun: Big names, festivals and events coming to Columbus area
Aiken arguably has the stronger fan base; after all, they gave themselves the name âClaymatesâ two decades ago. Itâs easy to see why: he is a powerhouse singer, and his voice is still clear as a bell. While he offered stunning renditions of the Bee Geesâ âTo Love Somebody" and Simon & Garfunkel's âBridge over Troubled Waterââwhich earned him a standing ovationâit was his cover of âUnchained Melody,â made popular by the Righteous Brothers, that especially demonstrated his vocal control, range and knack for knowing how to let a song simmer and build to a climax.
But Studdard is no slouch. For the first half of the concert, he showed off the buttery tone that earned him the âvelvet teddy bearâ nickname from Gladys Knight. During the second half, he really came alive, presenting a dynamic belting voice on âToo Much Heavenâ by the Bee Gees, "Kiss and Say Goodbyeâ by the Manhattans and his own hit song, âFlying Without Wings.â He also impressed during a Luther Vandross set and a beautiful, haunting cover of the Broadway classic âThe Impossible Dream (The Quest)" with Aiken.
Though a part of me secretly hoped to hear a bit of Studdardâs âSorry 2004ââsimply for the sake of nostalgiaâthe two performers put on a flawless show, which could work extremely well as a Vegas residency in the future. Aiken admitted that the opportunity to perform again with Studdardâthe two did a Broadway show in 2018âbrought him out of a break from performing. Aiken not sharing his gift is criminal, so Iâm imploring the powers that be to keep creating opportunities for the duo to perform.
I and the millions of other âAmerican Idolâ voters canât be wrong, and we will show up, which Aiken and Studdard acknowledged from the stage on Tuesday night.
âYou put us here,â Aiken said. âYou picked up the phone.â

'Idol' rivals Ruben Studdard, Clay Aiken are keeping the magic alive. See them in Phoenix
Itâs been 20 years since Ruben Studdard squeaked by Clay Aiken to win Season 2 of âAmerican Idol.â
That season finale remains the most-watched episode in âIdolâ history and the highest-rated regularly scheduled, live, non-sporting television episode of the 21st century with 38.1 million viewers.
It was kind of a big deal.
Thatâs why Studdard and Aiken are headed to Phoenix with Twenty | The Tour for a show at the Orpheum Theatre to celebrate their anniversary.
Well, that and the fact that they formed more of a friendship than a rivalry on their way to the finals, where Studdard prevailed by a margin of 134,000 votes of the 24 million total.
We caught up with Aiken and Studdard to discuss the tour, the ârivalryâ that never was and more.
An icon: How this new bar will honor the spirit of 'what Lost Leaf was' in downtown Phoenix
How it feels to be celebrating 20 years since 'American Idol'
How does it feel to be out there celebrating 20 years since the two of you did ââAmerican Idolâ together?
Studdard: It feels absolutely amazing to know that Iâm 20 years older than I was on âAmerican Idolâ (laughs).
Aiken: We do move a little slower (laughs). Itâs crazy. Ruben pointed out to me that it was coming up on 20 years about a year or so ago and I donât think that I had even comprehended what that meant. It sort of feels like it was yesterday to some degree. And to think about just how long 20 years really is, itâs a little mind-blowing and a little bit humbling, too.
Weâve been lucky enough to keep doing this 20 years later and a lot of people have not had that luxury in their careers, so we feel really good about that.
What brings Ruben Studdard and Clay Aiken back together
This isnât the first time you have worked together since the show. What do you think keeps bringing you back together?
Studdard: I honestly think itâs the response from the fans. They really enjoy the nostalgia of it all and the opportunity to see us on stage together.
Aiken: That and itâs easy. And by easy, I mean it's easy because weâve known each other 20 years. Weâve been close friends for 20 years. Weâve done one other tour together, a Broadway show and now this second tour together. Itâs very easy when you work with someone you know and can trust.
Thereâs certainly comfort in not having to carry the whole burden of a show on your own. But itâs even easier and more fun when you know thereâs a natural chemistry.
The idea of a Studdard-Aiken rivalry
You guys are obviously friends. When it came down to just the two of you on âIdol,â though, there had to be a sense of competition. Was there a rivalry?
Studdard: I mean, you know, I think the competitive nature of the show, I only felt during the earliest moments of the show, when we were in those large groups. Once we were in the group of people that made it to the house, so to speak, it took on a family atmosphere.
Aiken: Also, I can say emphatically that very last week of the show, when it was just the two of us, I would argue that was possibly the least competitive any of us had been. At that point, I think we both felt that we had made it to the end. We were gonna be on every episode of the season.
But there were also no stakes to Season 2 in the way I think there were for other seasons. When Fantasia showed up for her audition, she had seen Kelly sell her album very successfully. She had seen our season air to 40 million people in its finale. People who came into Season 3 and 4 and beyond, they knew what âIdolâ could do for them and what was at stake if they were successful.
When Ruben and I and all of us on our season auditioned, we didnât have the benefit of that information. We auditioned for a show that had gotten 9 million viewers the season before. And we all thought this would be a fun thing to do, that we might make some contacts and might get to make an album. And then we might go home.
Do you remember when you met? Did you immediately bond?
Aiken: (laughs uproariously) Ruben and I bonded over, I think, the fact that we were so similar. (Laughs). No, Iâm kidding. Weâre so different.
But we both had a strong affection for our home states. He was telling me all the people who were from Birmingham. I was telling him all the things that were great about Raleigh. And we just kind of competed back and forth with each other about that and that built a friendship.
But like Rubenâs been saying, there was something about that season. Season 2 is the only season where everybody lived in a house together. We roomed with each other, ate dinner together. Everything was done together. All subsequent seasons, they had hotel rooms or little apartments and lived their own separate lives. We shared everything.
Yes, there's a Season 2 Facebook chat group. And a text group
Have you stayed in touch with other people from that season?
Studdard: Weâve stayed in touch with everybody. We have our own little Facebook chat group and text chat group for everybody from the Top 12.
Aiken: Julie DeMato, who was in our season, sheâs already been to this show. Vanessa Olivarez, who was in the Top 12 with us, sheâs coming to the Nashville show. They all come when they are able to. And we stay connected pretty regularly. Unfortunately we lost one of our brothers from the show a few years back to a car accident, Rickey Smith. And we all flew to Oklahoma to be together for that funeral with his family. It is a family, that group of 12. Â We both know other people from other seasons, obviously, professionally or more, but we have really stayed connected to our core group.
It sounds like you have nothing but good memories of that show.
Studdard: Absolutely. It was one of the fondest times of my life. I liken it to my experience in college, playing football. It was just with music. So it was very memorable. A lot of work but well worth it.
Aiken: I tell people all the time if we could eliminate that little piece of Wednesday where we had to worry about being cut, I wouldâve done everything we did on âIdolâ and enjoyed it for the rest of my life. I just really had fun with it. It was exhausting, but we had a great time.
Did either of you have a week where you thought for sure you were gonna be cut?
Studdard: I was in the bottom two once, so I had a week where I definitely thought I would be cut.
Aiken: For me, it was every week (laughs). I actually didnât end up in the bottom two, but every week, I thought I would go home. I was sure.
The show aired at 5 p.m. on the West Coast, so weâd do dress rehearsal in the early afternoon and for the very first time all week, weâd get to see the other people sing their song. And I would sit there and listen to Rickey sing his song. Or Trenyce. Or Kim Locke sing. And Iâd think, âOh my God, (I'm) going home. Thereâs no way.â We had so many good people on that season.
And we did not realize that people were watching this show. There were 9 million people watching it the season before. And it sort of blew up while we were sequestered in our Idol house. We had no idea that people were watching and certainly didnât realize that people who were watching it were liking the two of us as much as they did.
I know you said that by the time you made the finals, you felt youâd already won. But Clay, what did you think when Ryan announced that Ruben had won?
Aiken: (laughs) Well, hereâs the breaking news that isnât news anymore. I actually saw the card before he said Rubenâs name. We were standing backstage. So I had seen it. By mistake. Ryan had turned it around and looked at it and I looked over his shoulder and saw.
So I expected it. I knew what was gonna happen. And if you go back and look at the show, Iâm staring right at Ruben when he announces the winner because I wanted to see Rubenâs face when he won. And Ruben, Iâm sure, is thinking âWhy the hell wonât you back up, man?â
What fans can expect from the Clay Aiken and Ruben Studdard tour
Tell me about this tour and what fans can expect.
Studdard: It is a wonderful night of great music. And I say that because on the show, in particular, we got an opportunity to sing songs from I think Americaâs greatest songwriters. So what weâre doing is trying to bring that same energy to our live show.
Aiken: Something about âIdolâ for not just us but the audience that watched it 20 years ago was you could turn it on with family and sing along with the songs. I tell people at our stage show every night, I didnât know who the Bee Gees were until âIdol,â which is a little embarrassing, even to this day. I didnât know who they were, but I knew their music.
So the music âIdolâ brought to audiences in their living rooms every week was stuff that everyone knew, the biggest hits from the biggest songwriters. And we wanted to make sure we recreated that when we did this tour. Weâve tried to make the entire evening a flashback to 2003. The music as youâre walking into the theater and playing during intermission is all the hits from 2003. Â
And we tell the stories of what it was like on the show. We talk about how we chose the song, about the people we worked with, like Smokey Robinson, or how we got to record with Burt Bacharach. We tell some of those stories from behind the scenes, and we really just try to recreate as much of that magic from that year as we can.
Do each of you have a particular moment in the concert that you most look forward to?
Studdard: I canât say that I do have a special moment. I enjoy all of it, honestly. And thatâs not to say that other people donât say that all the time, but I really do.
Aiken: When we sat down to put the show together, it was very much an organic situation. Ruben, myself and our music director, John Jackson, we all just kind of sat down and started talking. Ruben would start talking about a memory and Iâd say âOh, I remember this.â And then, weâd say âOh we should do this song together.â
But at one point in the process, we started talking about music that inspired us growing up and somehow that detoured into boy bands. And we ended up deciding to put together this medley of boy-band songs but it's less about the songs than it is about me trying to dance. Which is never pretty.
Studdard: (Laughs)
Aiken: So I think that maybe is my favorite simply because Iâve just gotten to an age where I know I can own it, that I cannot dance at all, and we just both have a lot of fun with that part of the show.
Your fans were obviously deeply invested in seeing you win. How does that work with them coming together to cheer for both of you on this tour?
Aikens: It comes to blows every night in the audience (laughs).
Studdard: If you had asked us that question when we were on the âAmerican Idolâ tour, I would say they probably did have a couple of fights in the parking lot. Now, nobody cares. They really are just coming to have a good time.
Aiken: And they know. They know weâre friends. We play it up a lot. We joke about being competitive with each other. But we donât feel that way. And our fans recognize that. I know my fans have grown to love Ruben and I think some of his fans like me a little bit too.

Twenty | The Tour will highlight the music that made Ruben & Clay American Idol favorites and household names. From Clay’s iconic rendition of “Bridge Over Troubled Water” to Ruben’s soulful single ”Sorry”, join America's favorite odd couple for an unforgettable evening of music and memories, spanning two decades, delivered as only these true superstars can.
Ruben & Clay are thrilled to reunite twenty years after captivating audiences during their historic run on the second season of Fox's American Idol in 2003. Both plucked from the relative obscurity of their hometowns in the South, the unlikely pair quickly became audience favorites instrumental in helping propel Idol to the top of the Nielsen ratings, nearly tripling the viewership of the previous season, and securing its place as one of the most consequential TV series in American history. Over 38 million viewers tuned in to hear the results of more than 124 million votes cast during their finale making it the most watched Idol episode in history and the highest rated regularly scheduled, live, non-sporting television episode of the 21st century. Combined they have recorded twelve albums, sold more than eight million albums worldwide, toured the country 14 times, starred together on Broadway, won four Billboard Music Awards, an American Music Award, and have been nominated for two Grammys.

The sprawling, mind-boggling metropolis of Russian Moscow has long been one of the theatrical stages on which the great dramas of Europe and Asia have been played out in grand style. Burned by Napoleon in 1812, immortalised by Tolstoy, utilised by the Bolsheviks and championed as a bastion of heroic defiance by the post-war communists, it’s almost hard to believe just how defining the historical events that found their home on Moscow’s streets have been. Moscow tour guides will easily be able to mark the major must-see landmarks on the map, from the onion-domed orthodox Saint Basil's Cathedral, to the political powerhouse of Red Square just next door, while others will be quick to recommend a ride on Moscow’s famous subterranean metro system, or a visit to the UNESCO-attested Novodevichy Convent on the city’s southern side. But Moscow is a city also in the throes of a cultural wrangling between the old and the new. Creative energies abound here: Boho bars and pumping super clubs now occupy the iconic mega structures of the old USSR; high-fashion outlets, trendy shopping malls and luxurious residential districts stand as testimony to a city that’s now the undisputed playground of the world’s super-rich, while sprawling modern art museums dominate the cultural offering of the downtown districts north of the Moskva River.
