Our Happy Customers

Great day out with Kim and the crew. It was a calm day so no one experienced sea sickness, but they gave us sea brackets just in case. It was unfortunate for me that when we stopped to look at the whales, the boat rocked a bit and I fell to the ground so be warned to stay seated until the boat is still. All in all, it was an amazing experience and the tour is extremely is well organized. Highly recommend.

In any service related business, the soft product/experience is likely the differentiator. Hiring the right people to represent your brand makes the world of difference and Samana with Terry got it right! From our zipline team members (Ariel, Franci and Concho) to our ATV/culture guide Rubio, all made our experience unforgettable. My wife and I have ziplined multiple times before however, this was one of our most memorable excursions. We always felt safe, equipment was in good condition and we liked the unique breaking system. Ariel and Concho helped take incredible and unforgettable videos/photos with our own mobile devices. They were willing to help us push our comfort zone (no hands, upside down) which added to our special day. Amazing and thank-you! Really enjoyed learning about the DR, its culture and how they live off the land and have a strong sense of community. Rubio (aka Benjamin Franklin?) ensure he took to time to stop, point out things of interest and let us smell/taste many different things. Homemade lunch at the beach was the icing on the cake. The ATV experience was amazing. It allowed us to see the countryside, waterfall, beach, dirt/paved roads. We covered a lot of ground over the 6+ hours we spent on our tour. Rubio made sure we had enough variety to keep everyone happy and a little wet/muddy if we really wanted to. The information we received prior to our cruise ship arriving was very clear. We had no problem finding them. We were back at the tender for our ship with lots of time to spare.

to various gorgeous beaches with Terry before we left. Communication with Terry was excellent. Due to weather predictions with rough seas he contacted us quite in time, asking if we wanted to change the tour to another date when the weather would be better. Sure! So a couple of days later than originally planned we did the tour. The staff accompanying us was great and the locations were absolutely gorgeous! We had plenty of time discovering everything and to relax as well. The lobster lunch was great. If you don’t eat seafood, they serve other yummy food. We didn’t feel uncomfortable at the boat at all and enjoyed everything to the max. We’d definitely recommend this tour if you like to discover hidden unspoilt beaches and gorgeous views from the seaside.

We had arrived at Las Terrenas the night before. We had the private tour booked for the Los Haitises Park. Benjamin Franklin picked us up at our Las Terrenas hotel at 8am sharp the next day. Benjamin is a friendly, very informative and great guide! The boat trip across Semana bay is spectacular. The caves are very well worth it. Because we were on the private tour, instead of Levantado Island, we went to the Eco Lodge. It's a bit of a walk, but it was a wonderful surprise. Lunch was great! The trip back was bit rough, but that was fine. Before booking, I had a lot of questions, and Terry was great in email. I would advise taking the private tour. It was great being on our own in the many caves with Benjamin there to inform us and answer questions, and keep us moving along. All in all, Tour Semana with Terry was a great and very professional and friendly experience. Highly recommended!!

Testimonials

Me and my firends visited the beautiful beach in Cayo Levantado and then went whale watching with Moto Marina. It was an amazing experience the staff was very kind and knowledgeable. I'm planning my next trip with them very soon!
From the very start of my interaction with Moto Marina, it was clear that they were professional and courteous. When we arrived at the office, that feeling was confirmed. And then when we got on the boat and experienced their generosity.
SUPER RECOMMENDED! We went whale watching and it was amazing. The crew had amazing energy and they had a lot of information on the whales as well as a couple of jokes as they guided us around the bay. We saw a lot of whales including some babies.

How to Plan a Trip to Samaná, Dominican Republic [in 2024]

You’ve certainly heard of Dominican Republic resort towns like Punta Cana… but what about Samaná?

A tiny peninsula on the north coast of the Dominican Republic, Samaná is rimmed with pristine beaches and packed with lush tropical beauty, offering everything travelers are looking for in Caribbean island vacation. Once just an afterthought as a travel destination in the Dominican Republic , Samaná is now finally starting to have its moment in the sun .

Ready to kick back on some of the most beautiful beaches in the Dominican Republic , far from the crowds? We tapped local experts and drew on our own experience exploring Samaná to create the ultimate guide to planning a trip to Samaná in the Dominican Republic.

Samaná Province

The province of Samaná is located in the northeastern corner of the Dominican Republic, stretching like a finger into the Caribbean Sea, with the deep Samaná Bay on its southern coast. The provincial capital city of Samaná (or, Santa Bárbara de Samaná ) is located on the southern coast of the peninsula. While the city doesn’t have much to offer , it’s a gateway to enjoying the rest of the region.

Small beach and resort towns like Las Terrenas and Las Galeras are popular destinations to enjoy the region’s hidden beaches, an impressive national park, and boutique luxury resorts that feel a world away from the frenzy of the country’s most famous destinations.

The province of Samaná in the Dominican Republic is known for its white sand beaches and lush, mountainous interior, home to some of the best things to do in the Dominican Republic . While there are a number of world-class resorts found along the peninsula’s beaches, it’s relatively untouched compared with other areas of the Dominican Republic.

The Samaná region also has everything from fantastic adventure sports like hiking and ziplining to eco-travel opportunities with eco-resorts and lodges set in the jungle and along deserted cove beaches.

Samaná vs. Punta Cana

In many ways, the province of Samaná and the area of Punta Cana are completely different. The gorgeous beachfront in Punta Cana is occupied by a seemingly unending row of oversized resorts. By contrast, much of the beachfront of Samaná is still undeveloped, with just a few small beach towns dotting the coast.

If you’re looking for a resort vacation in the Dominican Republic, don’t count out Samaná. The luxury private island Cayo Levantado Resort is located just a 10-minute boat ride from Samaná and sits on one of the country’s most pristine beaches.

Las Terrenas is also home to a number of more affordable resorts. Our top recommendation for a budget-friendly resort in the Dominican Republic , Bahia Principe Grand El Portillo, is located in Las Terrenas as well. Or, head to one of the province’s smaller beach towns, like laid-back Las Galeras on the peninsula’s tip, if you’re looking to disconnect.

Places to Visit in Samaná Province

There are plenty of places to visit in Samaná, with everything from larger cities and towns to tiny, beachfront villages that encapsulate the laid-back hammock lifestyle many travelers to the Caribbean are dreaming of. These are some of the most popular destinations for travelers headed to the province of Samaná.

The capital of the province of Samaná may not look like much, but it’s a great jumping-off point for exploring the rest of the province. Nearby beaches and great excursion opportunities to Los Haitises National Park , and half-day whale-watching excursions on Samaná Bay are some of the main draws to the small city of Samaná.

Samaná is also the gateway to some of the larger resorts in the region. Bahia Principe Luxury Samaná is located just outside of the city, while the stunning Cayo Levantado Resort is perched on white sand Cayo Levantado island just off the coast.

Where to Stay in Samaná: Bahia Principe Luxury Samaná ($$), Cayo Levantado Resort ($$$)

Las Terrenas

Las Terrenas is a favorite destination in the Dominican Republic and by far the most popular destination for travelers visiting the Samaná peninsula. This resort town is increasingly popular and even has a budding community of expats and long-term travelers. It’s still quite laid back and tranquil, though it now has more to enjoy than just the beach.

Where to Stay in Las Terrenas: Saman Boutique Hotel ($ – $$), Bahia Principe Grand El Portillo ($$)

Las Galeras

For a laid-back, less crowded beach experience in Samaná, consider heading to Las Galeras, located on the northeastern part of the peninsula. This small beach town is the ultimate breath of fresh air for travelers looking to get as far away from built-up Punta Cana as possible.

While the town is small, it has a lot of great conveniences and plenty of cool places to stay , including eco lodges and eco resorts , along with small, local hotels and apartments for those who want to stick around for even longer, like the growing number of digital nomads in the Dominican Republic .

Where to Stay in Las Galeras: Chalet Tropical Biohotel ($$)

Travel Essential

Don’t head out on your adventure without comprehensive travel insurance! Good travel insurance may cover lost or stolen gear, medical emergencies, delayed or canceled flights, and more.  Check out the policies available from  SafetyWing or compare plans using  Visitors Coverage .

Things To Do in Samaná

1. visit cayo levantado (or stay there).

Just off the coast of the city of Samaná is Cayo Levantado, a pristine white sand island that is home to some of the most beautiful beaches in the whole of the Dominican Republic. While much of the island is occupied by Cayo Levantado Resort – one of the most impressive resorts in the Dominican Republic – visitors who aren’t staying on the island can visit the island’s public beach for a memorable day trip.

Cayo Levantado is a popular day trip for travelers around the country – even those staying on the white sand beaches of Punta Cana make the trek to these beautiful shores! Cayo Levantado is easiest to access from Samaná, which is just a 15-minute boat ride from the island. These are the excursions to consider with reputable agencies in the area:

  • Cayo Levantado day trip from Samaná
  • Cayo Levantado day trip from Punta Cana

Of course, you can’t get the complete Cayo Levantado experience without staying at Cayo Levantado Resort . This recently refurbished resort is more impressive than ever, boasting stunning design, delicious cuisine, two sparkling pools, and a white sand beachfront that puts the island’s public beach to shame.

Cayo Levantado Resort is by far the best place to stay in Samaná, well worth traveling for!

el limon waterfall

2. Horseback Ride to El Limón Waterfall

Deep within the jungle heart of Samaná province is El Limón waterfall, a gorgeous natural attraction in the area that you won’t want to miss. Known in Spanish as Cascada El Limón or Salto del Limón , this towering waterfall is more than 130 feet (40 meters) tall and has an incredible swimming hole below it.

While the route to reach the falls is a little over 1.5 miles through the jungle, visitors can choose to hike or enjoy the journey by horseback. The falls can be visited independently if you have a rental car, though most travelers visit with a small group or private tour, which can be quite affordable. These are the tours we recommend:

  • El Limón Waterfall Tour from Samaná
  • El Limón + Cayo Levantado Excursion from Samaná
  • El Limón + Cayo Levantado Excursion from Punta Cana

You’ll also find excursions that include visits to Cayo Levantado or other beaches in the Samaná region, so make sure to consider all your options before booking an excursion!

3. Hit the Beach

You don’t have to go far to find a pristine beachfront in Samaná. This province is home to some of the Dominican Republic’s best beaches . Even better? The beaches in Samaná are never as crowded as the resort beaches like Bávaro Beach in Punta Cana.

These are some of the beaches you’ll want to visit as you explore the region.

Playa Las Galeras

Las Galeras is a small fishing town at its heart, making the white sand beaches of Playa Las Galeras some of the most laidback and relaxing on the peninsula. A great spread of tiny beach hotels, restaurants, and bars make it a dreamy place to spend an afternoon, while great snorkeling and diving beckon visitors offshore.

Playa El Valle

Rough roads to reach this cove-like mean that the golden sands of Playa El Valle are usually sparsely populated, perfect for travelers looking for that hidden beach feel. Spend a night at the sustainable El Valle Lodge for the complete experience, or just enjoy the beachfront eateries for a long afternoon.

Playa Bonita

The stunning white sands of the main beach in Las Terrenas as just as beautiful as their name implies. While the beach can get relatively busy at times, especially during holidays and the high season of travel, it’s nothing like the crowds you’ll find elsewhere in the Dominican Republic. Every imaginable amenity along the shores makes it perfect for a long day at the beach.

Playa Coson

Far enough west of Las Terrenas to avoid the crowds of Playa Bonita but close enough to make for an easy day trip, Playa Coson maintains that perfect hidden gem feel. This beach is surrounded by jungle and feels perfectly remote and peaceful; it’s a must-visit destination in Samaná.

samana los haitises national park

4. Visit Los Haitises National Park

The province of Samaná is home to one of the Dominican Republic’s most beautiful natural protected areas: Los Haitises National Park . With everything from ocean-carved caves to age-old Taino paintings and carvings and some of the most beautiful and undisturbed beaches in the Dominican Republic, it’s a must on any Dominican Republic itinerary.

Most of Los Haitises National Park is covered with lush, impenetrable jungle, so most visitors access the park via its coastline along Samaná Bay. It’s a popular day trip destination for travelers from everywhere from Santo Domingo to Punta Cana, though it’s most easily accessible from Samaná.

Here are the day trips we recommend to Los Haitises:

  • Los Haitises Day Trip from Samaná
  • Los Haitises Day Trip from Punta Cana
  • Los Haitises Day Trip from Puerto Plata
  • Los Haitises Day Trip from Santo Domingo

Most day trips to Los Haitises National Park from Samaná include a stop at the public beach on Cayo Levantado , making this an ideal way to see two of the region’s most impressive attractions at once!

5. Adventure Sports and Excursions

A growing visitor number in Las Terrenas and the entire Samaná peninsula in recent years means there is more to do here than ever, including some seriously spectacular adventure activities and excursions in the area.

In addition to hikes to El Limón waterfall, which is just under half an hour away from Las Terrenas, you’ll find everything from ziplining and ATV tours to guided excursions through the mountains. You’re really only limited by your imagination in this lush, beautiful area of the country.

Don’t think about traveling without a good  VPN (Virtual Private Network) . Using a VPN while connecting to the internet is an easy way to keep your personal information safe from hackers and trackers.  We’ve used  NordVPN  for years and couldn’t recommend it more – it’s a must for safety online, at home or abroad.

6. Go Ziplining

If other adventure sports options aren’t for you, head down the peninsula to Playa El Valle. This northern Samaná beach town is home to some of the best ziplining in the Dominican Republic, with an extensive ziplining course that makes for a popular day trip from Samaná or local activity for those staying nearby.

If you’d love to try ziplining in the Dominican Republic but don’t have time to make it to El Valle in Samaná, consider visiting the impressive ziplining course outside of Punta Cana . It’s a popular day trip and a great way to break up a vacation mostly spent at your beachfront resort.

Where To Stay in Samaná

Samaná might not have the endless all-inclusive resort options of Punta Cana or Puerto Plata, but there are plenty of incredible places to stay here. From private island resorts to ecolodges in the jungle and tiny, local oceanfront hotels along untouched beaches, Samaná has something for every style of travel.

Cayo Levantado Resort

The public beach on white sand Cayo Levantado might be a favorite day trip destination in Samaná, but the day trip experience pales in comparison to spending the night at Cayo Levantado Resort , one of the most impressive resorts in the Dominican Republic.

Cayo Levantado Resort boasts six restaurants, eight bars, two pools, and an incredible gym and spa. Its dedicated wellness space, Yubarta, is home to one of the most extensive wellness programs of any resort in the region, offering everything from yoga and meditation sessions to sound healing, breathwork, and consultations with nutritionists for a restorative experience leaving visitors refreshed top-to-toe.

There’s no better place to stay in Samaná than Cayo Levantado Resort, among the very best resorts in the Dominican Republic.

Bahia Principe Grand El Portillo

Bahia Principe Grand El Portillo

Our top recommendation among budget-friendly resorts in the Dominican Republic is found in Samaná: Bahia Principe Grand El Portillo . Located in laid-back Las Terrenas along the northern coast of the Samaná peninsula, it’s a beautiful and affordable resort with a gorgeous beachfront, great amenities, and even better snorkeling . It really doesn’t get much better than that.

The resort offers three swimming pools and a kids’ water park, seven restaurants, seven bars, a spa, and an entertainment space, meaning that you’ll barely have to leave the resort. However, with the impressive El Limón waterfall just a 20-minute drive away, you’ll certainly want to! The resort’s outdoor spaces are particularly beautiful, making the most of the gorgeous natural beauty of Las Terrenas.

el valle lodge

El Valle Lodge

Even if the big resorts aren’t your style, Samaná has something for you. This area has an awesome selection of tiny, local hotels, including the beautiful El Valle Lodge , a sustainable hotel located just outside of El Valle, home to one of the most beautiful beaches in the region. Independent bungalows and cabanas offer seclusion, and all-natural materials enhance the enchanting jungle surroundings.

Despite its ecolodge feel, El Valle Lodge has every amenity for a comfortable stay. The resort is just 300 meters from the beach , making it the perfect destination for both a beach getaway and a jungle retreat all in one. It’s definitely one of Samaná’s hidden gems.

Reviews and Bookings: El Valle Lodge

bahia principe luxury samana

Bahia Principe Luxury Samaná

One of the best places to stay near the city of Samaná, Bahia Principe Luxury Samaná is a beautiful waterfront resort on the province’s stunning coastline. Affordable and comfortable, this resort is smaller than some of its sisters in Punta Cana, though its delicious, local-inspired cuisine and great amenities offer just as big of a bang for your travel buck.

Just a short drive outside of Samaná, Bahia Principe Luxury Samaná is a great spot for travelers looking to explore the best of the region, including nearby Los Haitises National Park with its indigenous cave paintings and undeveloped beaches and Cayo Levantado. It’s the perfect combination of excellent location, affordable price point, and great amenities for a dreamy Dominican Republic getaway.

Getting to Samaná

Samaná international airport.

The easiest way to get to Samaná from abroad is via the international airport in Saman á , known as Samaná El Catey International Airport. This international airport currently receives just a few direct flights a week from the United States and Canada, though its flight schedule changes significantly between high and low travel seasons every year.

It’s tiny when compared to the much busier airports in Santo Domingo and Punta Cana. However, if you’re just traveling in Samaná, it’s an unbeatable option that will cut down on your travel time significantly.

Santo Domingo to Sama ná

The drive from Santo Domingo to Samaná is quite a manageable one, with decent roads, and it’s frequently traveled. Driving between Santo Domingo and the city of Samaná takes around 2.5 hours, of from Santo Domingo to Las Terrenas takes just over two hours.

You’ll find plenty of options for private drivers , which are easy to book online (much recommended to avoid overpricing at the airport or in town the day of your trip).

There are also numerous buses connecting Santo Domingo with the region daily, with 8+ buses connecting Santo Domingo and the city of Samaná every day, and just as many that head to Las Terrenas. Buses are greyhound-style and generally quite comfortable, with tickets costing between $6-9 one-way.

Punta Cana to Saman á

The drive from Punta Cana to Samaná is longer and takes about 4.5 hours, or even longer if you’re headed further down the Samaná Peninsula. The ride lasts about 6 hours if you travel by bus. There are plenty of services offering pre-booking for transportation from Punta Cana to Samaná , which is highly recommended.

An alternative option is to take the ferry from Punta Cana to Samaná. The ferry connects these two destinations with just a 50-minute boat ride. This ferry doesn’t permit vehicles aboard.

Samaná, Dominican Republic – FAQ

How safe is samaná in the dominican republic.

Samaná is quite a safe province in the Dominican Republic. Its laid-back nature and smaller tourism industry make it a welcoming and friendly travel destination that travelers tend to love.

Of course, petty crime exists in Samaná, as it does everywhere from your hometown to every corner of the world. However, with a few easy travel safety practices like not using clothing or jewelry that are too attention-grabbing and not flashing expensive technology , you should have no problems in Samaná.

How Long Is the Ferry From Punta Cana to Samaná?

The ferry from Punta Cana to Samaná takes about 45 minutes to an hour, depending on the conditions of the ocean when you’re traveling. The ferry between Punta Cana and Samaná is perhaps the best way to travel and cuts down travel time between the two destinations quite significantly.

Here’s What You Get

Are you having a tough time choosing just ONE excursion? If so, look no further than Samana by Bus.

The tour is, arguably, 3 excursions in ONE:

  • Safari Truck
  • Horseback Riding
  • Catamaran with Island time

Oh, and we throw in a secluded mountain waterfall to boot!

Sound impossible to do it all in one day? It’s not, so keep reading and let us explain…

Samana is a peninsula in the Northeast Region of the Dominican Republic, boasting a mix of virgin beaches and lush mountain forests. An hour-long bus ride that winds between the oriental mountain range and the Samana Bay takes us from Punta Cana to the sleepy fishing village of Miches. From here we board our catamaran and cross the Bay to the Samana Peninsula.

  • Safari Truck:  From the Samana docks, you board our Open-Air Safari Truck and we wind our way into Samana’s mountainous countryside to a typical ranch. Experience and taste the region’s colorful local produce: coconut, coffee, cocoa, mango, pineapple, sweet potato, banana, papaya, passion fruit and mamajuana (supposedly a natural aphrodisiac).

Back on the truck, you’ll pass by numerous plantations of produce you just savored at the ranch, before arriving at the entrance of one of the Dominican Republic’s most sought-after waterfalls… Salto El Limon.

  • Horseback Riding:  Now it’s time to saddle-up for a 30-minute horseback ride into the tropical forest. Our muddy trail follows the Limon River before it crashes down over a mountain ridge. Truly a sight to see, the Limon Waterfall is nestled in the depths of Samana’s humid forests, featuring a cascade that free falls 170 feet into a green lagoon below.

On how many occasions will you wade in natural mountain waters in the middle of the Caribbean? Take your time.

To the Truck once again, we make our way to the country ranch for an authentic Dominican lunch of fish, chicken, rice, beans, salad, fresh fruit and dessert in an amazing, rustic Caribbean setting. Believe us, this is better than your hotel’s “Dominican Menu”. On to the Catamaran…

  • Catamaran:  Our dual-haul, spacious catamaran will now take you to the renowned Cayo Levantado. Literally meaning ‘raised cay’ in English, this tiny atoll is encircled by powdery sands, lapping turquoise waters and mountains to the North and South. Enjoy your time on this lazy island and don’t forget to try the area’s famous Pina Colada with rum, ice and juice right in the hollow Pineapple. How do you drink your Pina Colada? In a cup?

We now transverse the Samana Bay to  Cayo Levantado…

AMAZING!!! We did this on our honeymoon and had so much fun! Everything from the pick up to the tour and drop off was great. You will not be disappointed!

One of the best excursions we’ve been on! So much fun and all the staff were incredible. We loved it so much that we talked a random couple we met in our hotel to book it the next day. Will definitely do it again.

We had such a great time!! My 13 yr old son, husband, best friend and I went on the all day excursion to Samana. We had a great trip, was brought to Bacardi Island and were able to snorkel, relax and have a few drinks. We decided not to do the whale watching, which was available to everyone, we decided to relax on the beach. Joaquin was our tour guide for the English speaking tourists. He was great!! He was full of knowledge and made sure we wanted for nothing. He was funny and a nice guy to spend the day with. The horseback ride to waterfall was great and the waterfall was beautiful!! When you get your horse you are accompanied by a “local” that stays with you THE WHOLE time. I wish my Spanish was better, my guide was so sweet and the work these guys put in is crazy. They run along side the horse all the way to waterfall, point out local vegetation on the way, walk you down to the waterfall, take pictures for you, literally rinsed my feet so I could put my shoes back on after swimming, waited for me as I made it back up the trail and then ran all the way back beside the horse. TIP, TIP, TIP these guys, please!! They all do this on the side for extra money and they only do it for tips, felt so bad when I saw a lot of them not being tipped. The trail leading to the falls is a bit difficult for someone if you are not in great shape, but the guides never leave you and help you along the way. Pushing 50 and an extra 15 lbs was my problem getting back up, but still did it, don’t let me scare you…totally worth it!!!! Again, I hope all people American and not, understand that when visiting other countries, especially ones that are not as fortunate as we, they depend on us tipping. I don’t think a few extra bucks for a wonderful lifetime memory is stretching it too much. It makes a world of difference to all those making sure that we enjoy our time there. Again…you were great Joaquin, thanks for a wonderful experience!!!!

This excursion is absolutely amazing!! From the moment you get picked up at the airport you are greeted by a wonderful staff, Joaquin was very welcoming and made us feel right at home. We were handed a nice cup of Brugal and soda and our adventure begun. We were taken off in a big truck. We arrived on a farm, where we were taught about cocoa, coffee, tea, and Mama Juana. of course we were able to sample a little bit of everything. From there we were taken to mount the horses. The horses along with our guides took us to El Salto De El Limon Waterfall. It was an absolute adventure. The next thing we did after taken a plunge in the beautiful waterfall was head back for an amazing lunch. After lunch we headed down to the beach at Cayo Levantado. Cayo Levantado was beautiful and the catamaran ride was fun. We loved every minute of it and will definitely recommend it to our friends. When the day is done you are taken back to the airport and head back to PUNTA CANA. Make sure you bring cash for tips.

Fun day with great people! It is a long day, but you get to see a lot. It would of been good if you could stay at the island longer than an hour but still a fun day!

Shanelle (verified purchase) – August 25, 2022

This was amazing and I am so glad that we experienced this. HOWEVER, I was not very happy that we were not informed of the 250 steps. We pre planned and paid almost $600 for the 2 of us using the website. No where on the website was there any mention of the physical challenge necessary to get to the waterfall. And we were not informed until we were at the 1/2 way point. I am 54 with a bad heart and bad knees, and my boyfriend is legally blind. We travel a lot and we always plan our excursions in advance and have never had this happen. So please consider including information about the physical challenges on the website so that others can make an informed decision before purchasing. We did however complete this excursion with the assistance of 2 wonderful guides from the horse farm. So if you are physically challenged be aware that you will see an amazing waterfall but not before climbing down and then back up 250 uneven steps…

Samana Beautiful island, WONDERFUL experience. The produce tasting, horseback riding, waterfall and private beach was AMAZING! Wish I bought more chocolate, coffee and coconut oil. My horse Carmelo was slow, but that seemed to bother Armando (his handler) more than me – I like to take in the sights! Waterfall was refreshing and just enough time. Private beach was B-E-A-UUUUU-TIFUL!!! I had 2 problems with this excursion – 1. no one advises you that the 2 propeller plane goes higher than most commercial flights (this was the scariest experience of my life! I fly commercial all the time and have also been in helicopters and this was SCARY) and 2. the time at the private beach (Bacardi Island I think it was called) should be longer. The small plane ride would be the only reason I would not recommend this excursion – should atleast advise people so they know. I can only say it was worth it because we made it there and back safely!

Awesome tour! We loved El Limon waterfall. The only complaint would be more time at the waterfall (I could have spent all day). It was well worth the money spent. This is a tour I would do again and would highly recommend.

By far, this was my favorite excursion. I really enjoyed the visit to the plantation n the horseback ride to the waterfall was fun. The guys that assisted us with the horses were wonderful n the meal provided was delicious. Nathan, the guide was very informative n Vladimir was of great help as well. I wish that the beach stay was longer. Overall, I had an awesome time. Thank u for providing us with such a wonderful n unforgettable experience.

Pation (verified purchase) – March 24, 2022

Most amazing tour I have ever been on! I highly recommend! As a solo traveler, I felt completely catered to. It was just a quick ride over to the airport and the plane seated about 35 people. Once we reached Samana, Eduardo spotted me in the crowd of 30+ non English speaking touristas. He proceeded to tell me that he would be my private guide, translator and best buddy for the day! And he really was!! The. Next person who approached me was the photographer. He asked everyone if he could take pictures of them (60$ per couple or $50 for singles). I was the only one to request the photo package so I also had my own personal paparazzi! He took over 140 FANTASTIC shots too!! We took a beautiful trip into the countryside and made our way to a plantation/farm where I was schooled about cacao, pineapple, cigars and of course MAMJUANA! All are available for purchase. The prices are super reasonable and you have the chance to shop after the horse ride and waterfall.

next I was fitted for my helmet and boots. Then we got in the jeep and drive to the back of the farm where we were paired up with our horse and guide. This young man never left my side & even ran with Dinéro (my horse)& I many times as we galloped on the way to the waterfall. (I was sure to tell Them I was an experienced rider so that I was given a larger, more fiesty horse that wasn’t afraid to move and pass others).

The waterfall was breathtaking and worth the muddy, steep 80 steps you have to hike down!!! (Just remember, you have to walk back up too!! Take your time. It’s not for anyone Who is not in decent physical condition), we swam in the waterfall for about half an hour, climbed the stairs back up and mounted the horses again back to the plantation. I did tip my horse guide $20 as it was WELL EARNED. I saw a few people give their boys $5 or $10 & they seemed happy with it. The plantation had an amazing lunch of breads, rice, potatos, chicken, fish and fresh fruits were provided by the owner & workers. Very TASTY! They also provided a rum and coke drink, or soda and waterfront the cooler on the tour truck.

After lunch we boarded the tour truck again and headed to the other side of the mountain. (From buying cigars and tipping, I needed more cash. they were happy to stop at the ATM!!) We then boarded the boat to the island for a fun, 15 minute ride over to the island where we were welcomed with fresh pina colodas and coco locos in the fruit and shell!! These drinks were $5 each but you were also allowed a beer or soda for no charge. We spent an hour and a half on the white sandy beach. There is a little market place with local art for purchase and a few guys walking around with snorkel gear to rent as well. Our day came to a close with a short ride back in the boat and a quick ride in the truck back to the airport.

Honestly, I was treated like a princess all day and these guys really work so hard to show everyone their beautiful countryside and share their blessings. Worth every penny. Best day ever! I’d take this trip 100 more times. Thank you Punta Cana Tours!!

We booked the Samana waterfall excursion and it was hands down the best excursion I have ever taken! I knew to bring a tip for our main tour guide, but I didn’t realize there would be guide’s that guide your horse to and from the waterfall. These were the real MVP’s of this whole trip! The trails were muddy and could be a bit nerve racking but the horses were well trained and very steady. Don’t try to guide your horse even if you are an expert. These horses know the trails like the back of their hoofs and I trusted my sweet Cappuccino every step of the way. My only regret is that I did not bring more cash to tip the horse guide more. He even carried my backpack and looked after my belongings while I swam. If you are worried about flying in a small plane, don’t! I knew at first sight we had a professional, experienced pilot. Takeoff and landing were as smooth as glass! Bravo gentleman! Joaquin our tour guide was very knowledgeable and very professional! And who can forget our sweet Perez (that was his last name), the photographer who documented our day of adventure every step of the way! Nicest people ever! If you do one excursion on your trip, this is the one! Oh and last but not least, I was very impressed with the communication from Punta Cana tours. They responded so quickly to my emails and questions. Fantastic company all around!

I loved everything about this excursion! The facilities were beautiful, the staff was so friendly and fun, and the excursions themselves were worth every penny!

I was super nervous reserving online but everything went just as Punta Cana Tours said it would . They are a great company that went out of their way to assist us. I don’t remember meeting anyone that worked for Punta Cana Tours that day but we did have a number for emergencies if one arose. You have to remember that these tours are sold by many companies but there is only one tour in general. No matter who you buy through you end up on the same tour. Our guide Rody was amazing and really made the day special for everyone!!! I think this part of the trip was contracted with S&S tours. We went on the full day Samana day trip (ElLimon Waterfall) w/ Bacardi Island. It was amazing!! The only bummer part was that we put a small deposit on a video with our pictures from the day with Miguel (worked for the tour) and he never delivered it. We waited for an hour after the agreed upon time and he never came. He seemed like a very honest person so I am thinking something must have happened to prevent him from coming to meet with us. It was a small deposit so no worries but I do wish I had those photos 🙁 Thanks again Punta Cana Tours you helped make our trip one to remember!!

Quick Overview: best Punta Cana to Samaná excursions

Looking to book last-minute and don’t have time to read all the details? No worries, the following overview shows you the different tours available when looking for a Samaná adventure to Punta Cana. If you are interested in all the details about Samaná, Salto El Limón Waterfall and Cayo Levantado and Bacardi Island continue reading this guide below as I will show you all the different options of how to get from Punta Cana to Samaná.

What is Salto El Limón Waterfall?

Salto El Limón, also known as El Limon Waterfall, is one of the most captivating waterfalls in the Dominican Republic. With its lush vegetation, vibrant waters, and picturesque drop, it offers a mesmerizing natural spectacle. The waterfall can be accessed through hiking or horseback riding, typically included in guided excursions from Punta Cana or other locations. Alternatively, Salto El Limón presents an opportunity for independent hikers to explore the trails, as they are reasonably well-marked even for those without extensive jungle experience. Upon reaching the waterfall—whether on a guided tour, horseback ride, or self-guided hike—you can relish in the invigorating natural swimming pool, boasting an enchanting emerald green color. It’s important to exercise caution during this Samaná adventure, as the path can be slippery, and there may be rocks in the pool.

The waterfall of Salto El Limon, one of the most picturesque waterfalls in the Dominican Republic

Salto El Limón is not only the most picturesque waterfall, with 120 feet it is also the highest waterfall in Samaná. Therefore it is even more impressive to visit this waterfall in the Dominicana Republic, especially as you can see another one on the way to the falls.

Where is Salto El Limón Waterfall?

Salto El Limón is nestled on the Samaná peninsula, located in the northeastern part of the Dominican Republic. The access point is the charming village of El Limón (Dominican Republic), situated between the popular fishing town of Las Terrenas and the vibrant city of Santa Barbara de Samaná. There are several El Limon Waterfall hiking trails (detailed below) that commence between the villages of El Limón and Rancho Español. If you’re driving, the approximate distances to the trailheads are 30 minutes to Las Terrenas, 2.5-3 hours to Santo Domingo , 3-3.5 hours to Puerto Plata , and 4.5 hours to Punta Cana. For those relying on public transport , the journey takes slightly over 30 minutes from Las Terrenas and Santa Barbara de Samaná.

When to go to El Limón Waterfall?

El Limón Waterfall (Dominican Republic) is best visited during the rainy season or at the beginning of the dry season as in some years the waterfall dries out pretty much at the end of the dry season. In this case, particularly in the months of April to June, you might only see a trickle running down the impressive drop. Therefore, the best time to visit Salto El Limón Waterfall is between August (or after the first rains have arrived) and March more or less.

In terms of the time of the day, it is best to visit Salto del Limon in Samaná as early as possible in the morning – ideally before 9am – or late in the afternoon after 3pm, to avoid the crowds of tour groups during the day.

The journey to Salto El Limon Waterfall begins with an early morning pick-up from your hotel or all-inclusive resort in Punta Cana , covering pick-ups in areas such as Cap Cana, Cabeza de Toro, Bavaro, Macao, and Uvero Alto . As you travel northwestward, a scenic drive unfolds along a newly constructed road, meandering between the majestic mountains of the Cordillera Oriental, including the notable Montaña Redonda , and the picturesque coastline. En route, you’ll pass through quaint villages and witness the lush rice terraces, immersing yourself in the local ambiance.

Upon reaching one of the small ports along the Miches – Sabana de la Mar route (which depends on the tour operator you book), you transition to a boat for a 15-mile ride from the Punta Cana side to the Samaná peninsula. The boat journey may vary in intensity, influenced by the day’s wind and waves. Upon arrival in Samaná, you’ll switch to a safari truck, traversing the verdant Samaná mountain range, abundant with lush vegetation and charming fishing villages, on your way to the ranches that mark the beginning of the tour to El Limón Waterfall.

At this point, you’ll have the option to choose between a horseback ride or a hike. While a horseback ride is available, I recommend opting for the hike, not only to challenge your fitness but also to support the mules and horses, which may not always be in optimal condition (so express it positively – in other words, the horses or mules are getting treated very poorly). The El Limón Waterfall hike takes approximately 30 to 45 minutes and although the trail can be rocky and muddy, it is a manageable trek.

Hike to the waterfall of Salto El Limon on the Samaná peninsula

For both options – hike or horseback ride – you have to first climb down and afterwards climb up a natural staircase of around 150 feet altitude to reach Salto El Limón Waterfall. That’s equal to the height of this beautiful waterfall.

Please note that if you decide on horseback riding you get assigned a private guide who is taking care of your horse and is guiding you all the way to the waterfall El Limón. They also make sure you are comfortable and enjoy the ride. Those local guides usually don’t get paid (it doesn’t matter which tour you book), so please tip them generously. That’s one of the few things I don’t like about Salto El Limón in Samaná, but unfortunately, that’s how their business is organized. Again, the better option would be opting out from the horseback ride as the horses are not getting treated well anyway. Hiking to El Limon Waterfall is definitely the better option here, even though your guide might try to convince you of the opposite.

After refreshing yourself in the natural swimming pool, you ride or hike back to the starting point of the El Limón Waterfall tour and can enjoy a typical Dominican lunch. Back in the safari trucks, you are heading back towards the port of Samaná where you embark on the boat and just take a quick 15-minute hop to the gorgeous island of Cayo Levantado, which is also widely known as Bacardi Island (apparently, this was where the famous Bacardi commercial was filmed, but there is no real proof about it). Anyway, Bacardi or not, you can enjoy the beach and the turquoise ocean before heading back from Samaná by boat to the mainland and from there by bus back to your Punta Cana resort .

If interested in this Punta Cana to Samaná tour, please check out the following hand-selected options, which are some of the recommendable excursions from Punta Cana to El Limón Waterfall and Cayo Levantado.

As you can see from the description of those Samaná adventure tours, these excursions from Punta Cana are quite long, as they have several stages of transport: bus – boat – safari truck – hike/horseback ride and the same way back. The amazing thing about it is that it doesn’t get boring, the negative point might be that it’s just too long because the whole excursion from Punta Cana to Salto El Limón takes 10-12 hours – which is also why most of the El Limón Waterfall excursions only have average reviews. However, if you see the journey as part of your trip, the tours to Salto de Limon are enjoyable.

Guided air excursion to El Limón Waterfall from Punta Cana

If you feel that this is too long then you should check out the excursion by airplane as it cuts the transport part considerably. Instead of the long bus and boat journey, you board a plane at Punta Cana International Airport and hop over to Samaná in a fraction of the time. This tour is called Samaná Explorer from Punta Cana by plane * and comes with a couple of additional perks on top: – smaller groups, as the plane usually only fits 8 to 19 passengers – less time in the bus and more time on the Samaná peninsula – amazing views on the Dominican Republic from above, including Punta Cana, the Cordillera Oriental and the Samaná peninsula (depending on the flight route of the day)

Playa Esmeralda seen from above, during the flight from Punta Cana in direction to the Samaná peninsula

Once you arrive at the local Samaná airport of Arroyo Barril, the procedure is similar to the guided land excursion starting with the part of the safari truck. Some companies swap this truck for a private van as well, depending on the tour. You head over to the area of Salto del Limón (usually a bit earlier than the regular groups from Punta Cana), hike or horseback ride to the El Limón Waterfall and visit Cayo Levantado (Bacardi Island) on the way back. Once you are done here, you head back to the Arroyo Barril Airport and fly back from Samaná to Punta Cana – again with marvelous views if the weather permits. As the planes are super small, you shouldn’t be claustrophobic, but the big advantage is that nearly everyone in the plane has a window seat and can admire the Dominican Republic from above.

Check the prices of both Punta Cana to Samaná tours, the land excursion and the Samaná Explorer by plane. Sometimes the difference is amazingly small. At the time of writing, some tours by bus are offered at 179 USD per person (even there are existing a few cheaper options), while the plane excursion is priced at around 300 USD for 2023. That’s not so much of a difference considering you are getting two panoramic flights on top.

You don’t like these guided excursions and would prefer to go on your own? Absolutely possible! Just count in some additional time as driving there the whole way is a bit far and would not be feasible for 1 day. That’s why I would highly recommend making a 2- or 3-day road trip out of it – either as a self-drive tour or with a private driver. This also gives you the advantage that you can visit Salto El Limón very early in the morning or very late in the afternoon and therefore have a high chance of having this beautiful waterfall just for you. You can check out a possible itinerary from Punta Cana to Samaná in this article .

The waterfall of Salto El Limon, one of the most picturesque waterfalls in the Dominican Republic

How do you organize this trip?

Well, it depends! If you would like to do it as a self-drive tour, just rent a car ( my recommendation is here *), book yourself an accommodation * in the popular beach town of Las Terrenas (the complete opposite of Punta Cana) and head off early the next day on your way to El Limón Waterfall.

If you prefer a private driver, I can help you with finding one, then you just need your accommodation on the Samaná peninsula and you are good to go.

Visit waterfall El Limón Waterfall from Santo Domingo

Guided excursion to salto el limón from santo domingo.

If you are based in Santo Domingo , incl. its beach towns Boca Chica and Juan Dolio, there are – as far as I know – no guided group excursions to the waterfall El Limón on the Samaná peninsula. Therefore, a private excursion (where you can combine El Limón Waterfall with some other highlights of the Samaná peninsula, for example, the pristine beaches of the area or the popular beach town of Las Terrenas) would be the only option to reach Salto De Limón for a day-trip.

However, even better would be a 2- or 3-day road-trip to Samaná , as the driving time from Santo Domingo to El Limón Waterfall is still around 3 hours, which is pretty long for a day trip. Such a Samaná road-trip is particularly interesting as the peninsula is stunning and will blow your mind away with its natural beauty and unspoiled nature. Samaná is harvesting millions of coconuts every year, so you can imagine how many palm trees you can find here. The beaches in Samaná are no comparison with those in Punta Cana , as they are mostly pristine and empty – you can have a 2-mile beach in Samaná all on your own. So why not explore a little bit more and plan a 2- or better 3-day itinerary ?

You can find a sample of my road trip ideas and itinerary proposals here . Furthermore, you can contact me here and we can work out a cool and personalized Dominican Republic itinerary together.

Visit waterfall El Limón Waterfall when you are already in Samaná

Many people choose to spend their vacation right in Samaná – because of the relaxed beach town vibe, the pristine beaches and the lower prices, even transportation from the airports in the Dominican Republic to the Samaná region is a bit more difficult than in Punta Cana .

If you are already in Samaná you can choose between two options to visit El Limón Waterfall: going on an organized tour or heading to the waterfall on your own.

Delicious tropical fruits right on the road when driving in Samana

If you are on holiday in Samaná, you have different options to book a guided excursion to El Limón Waterfall. Advantages of these tours: some of them leave early so that you reach the waterfall before other people arrive from cruise ships or from Punta Cana.

If you are staying at one of the few all-inclusive resorts in Samaná, you can book one of the regular tours, where you get picked up and later head to the trailhead of Salto El Limón by safari truck. These Samaná adventure tours are considerably shorter than the ones described above from Punta Cana because depending on where you are staying, the driving time is just 20 – 60 minutes. Upon arriving at the ranch, you saddle up the horse and start horseback riding (or hiking) to the waterfall Salto El Limón (Samaná). As mentioned, I would recommend the hike as the horses or mules are not in good shape, furthermore the trail is a good challenge for your physical fitness. And by the way, I was once riding the horse and felt more in danger than when walking due to the uneven path, that’s also one of the reasons I have done all the El Limón Waterfall hiking trails by foot since then.

Hike to the waterfall of Salto El Limon on the Samaná peninsula

Once you have arrived at El Limón Waterfall and climbed down the 150 feet staircase, you can refresh yourself in the natural swimming pool and enjoy the cold river and gorgeous colors. After the hike (or horseback ride) back you usually get a local Dominican lunch and drive back to your accommodation afterwards. The whole El Limón Waterfall excursion just takes around 4-6 hours as opposed to 10-12 hours when coming from Punta Cana to Samaná, but does not – in most cases – include “Bacardi Island” (Cayo Levantado).

Here you can find some of the best El Limón Waterfall excursions from Samaná: – El Limón Waterfall without pick-up (starts right at El Limón) * – El Limón Waterfall from Las Terrenas * – El Limón Waterfall from Las Terrenas (Private Tour) * – El Limón Waterfall from Santa Barbara de Samaná *

If you would like to be particularly early at El Limón Waterfall (Dominican Republic), I can recommend Flora Tours * from my own experiences. They start their tours in Las Terrenas (no other pick-up points) at the latest at 8 am and just go in small groups which means you are at the waterfall usually around 9 am, which (nearly) guarantees you some unspoiled views and experiences of Salto El Limón (Samaná). Further plus: if you reserve with 2 people and they don’t have other reservations for that day, they do the tour just with you – there is no minimum number of participants. This means you just pay the price for a group tour but get a private tour if you are lucky.

Visiting El Limón Waterfall on your own

How to arrive by car and where to park at el limón waterfall.

Arriving by car to Salto El Limón is not that difficult if you are used to road conditions in third-world countries. Saying that, if you have driven in similar countries before, you can easily rent a car in the Dominican Republic . If this is your first time in this kind of environment I highly recommend a private driver.

To reach Salto El Limón, just enter El Limón Waterfall (Dominican Republic) in Google Maps and follow the instructions. Depending on where you are coming from, the distance and driving time to the trailheads are as following:

– from Las Terrenas: 12 miles / 30 minutes – from Las Galeras: 25 miles / 1 hour – from Santo Domingo : 100 miles / 2:40 hours – from Puerto Plata : 120 miles / 3:45 hours – from Punta Cana: 200 miles / 4:20 hours

You can park your car at one of the several paradas and ranches which are signposted along the road between the villages of Rancho Español and El Limón (Dominican Republic). Those are properties of small family-operated tour operators. All the tours to Salto El Limón waterfall, it doesn’t matter if guided or not, if hiking or by horse, start from here. Check the map below with all of the El Limon Waterfall Hike Starting Points to get a full overview of where you can park (for example for Sendero Franklin you park at “Parada Franklin” respectively “Rancho Franklin”)

Hike to the waterfall of Salto El Limon on the Samaná peninsula

Reaching Salto El Limón by public transport

If you would like to reach Salto El Limón Waterfall by public transport, you can connect either via Las Terrenas or Santa Barbara de Samaná. Little pick-ups or minivans are leaving Las Terrenas at the cemetery right in front of La Bodega or in Santa Barbara de Samaná at the public market.

When arriving from Las Terrenas, some of the vans/pick-ups run all the way to Santa Barbara de Samaná. In this case, tell the driver that you want to go to Salto El Limón and they will drop you at one of the different trailheads.

If the minivan/pick-up just runs until the village of El Limón (Samaná), you have to get a motoconcho (motorcycle-taxi) from there to your preferred trailhead or simply walk half a mile to the first trailhead, Sendero El Café (see below for explanations of the different trails).

El Limon Waterfall Accommodation

Usually, most people visiting Cascada El Limón Waterfall are staying in Las Terrenas ( check here for the best Las Terrenas accommodation *), which is only a 30-minute drive away. Still, if you’d like to stay even closer, there are a few accommodation options available right in El Limón in Samaná, a busy little village mostly unaffected by tourism (except for the daily El Limón Waterfall excursions):

De Luz Hotel ($): a very affordable small hotel, with a couple of rooms which just got renovated when I was there a couple of years ago. No frills, but clean and great value for money. De Luz Hotel is located right in El Limón town and within walking distance of several restaurants and smaller shops but still set in a peaceful surrounding (call +1 809 757 5168 for availability).

De Luz Hotel in El Limon, Dominican Republic

Lutix Hotel * ($$): another affordable option in El Límon (Samaná), yet more expensive than De Luz Hotel as it offers more amenities such as a swimming pool and a restaurant. It is located slightly out of town but still walkable to El Limón. To the trailhead for the EL Limón hiking trail “Sendero El Café”, it is a 1-mile walk. ( check prices and availability here *)

Samana Eco-Lodge * ($$$): a unique hotel right in El Limón, just a few hundred feet behind the town, amidst the beautiful green and lush nature. You can expect a true eco-lodge here, where you can connect with nature and enjoy peace and happiness. Just note that the rooms don’t have proper walls. ( check prices and availability here *)

Local tours to waterfall Salto El Limón

Once you arrive at one of those ranches (called “paradas”), the owners will most likely try to sell you a tour which usually includes the horseback ride and lunch. If you are interested in one of those tours, be prepared to haggle as they tend to overcharge. However, if you would like to have a tour with horseback ride and lunch I recommend booking one of the excursions listed above. There are hardly any advantages when going with the local tour operators as they are not as customer-orientated but more money-orientated. You probably have a better experience when going with an official tour *.

And, as a reminder I want to mention it again, most of the horses used for the El Limon Waterfall excursion – including those of the local tours and owners – are in pretty bad shape. Please don’t use them and better enjoy nature on one of the amazing El Limon Waterfall hiking trails.

Hiking trails to waterfall Salto El Limón

On the other side, if you don’t want to have a tour at all, you are good to go once you park your car at the ranch. You might have to pay around 100-200 DOP as a parking fee and the ranch owners will try to tell you that it is dangerous to go on your own, but it is not as long as you have hiking experience, are in decent physical shape and head off with your GPS application to track your trail. Alternatively, hire a guide from the ranches and pay him around 20-40 USD per group (without horses, without lunch) and stay firm with your offers – they will try to milk more money out of you.

If you decide on visiting on your own, you have plenty of El Limon Waterfall hiking trails available. The good thing compared to other hiking areas in the Dominican Republic is that the hiking trails are marked in some way, so it is one of the few occasions where you can go hiking in the country without proper field experiences ( check out this article for more hiking options in Punta Cana ). However, due to the limited signs, I recommend going with a GPS that tracks your way to make sure you don’t get lost. In total, there are 6 hiking trails (called “Senderos”) leading to Salto El Limón. I will describe them shortly from north to south.

Sendero El Café starts just 1 km behind the village of El Limón (Dominican Republic), making it the hiking trail closest to Las Terrenas. With around 2 miles and a spectacular viewpoint on the way (which is unique and doesn’t exist on the other hiking trails), it is also the longest and the most beautiful hike of all trails leading to the waterfall Salto El Limón. It also contains two river crossings, so be prepared that your shoes get wet and muddy (which also happens on most of the other trails).

Sendero La Manzana, Sendero Arroyo Surdido and Sendero Franklin

These three trails are the shortest routes to Salto El Limón Waterfall. If you hike at a decent pace you can make them in around half an hour, as they are just around 1 mile long. On the way, you can see a smaller waterfall which, however, isn’t as impressive as El Limón Waterfall. A river crossing is also necessary on this hiking trail. The trailheads of Sendero La Manzana, Sendero Arroyo Surdido and Sendero Franklin can be found around 5 kilometers after the village of El Limón (Samaná).

Sendero La Javilla

This hiking trail to Waterfall El Limón is only a few hundred meters longer than the three previously mentioned and leads along a beautiful and quiet river for a long time. It has the lowest incline of all options and is therefore the easiest to walk, although your shoes will get dirty due to the mud on most parts of the trail.

Together with the Sendero El Café, Sendero Olga is the longest hiking trail with a distance of around 2 miles. It has the southernmost starting point and is the first trailhead when coming from Santa Barbara de Samaná. After half of the distance, it gets united with Sendero Javilla. The scenery here is quite attractive but not as spectacular as at Sendero El Café.

Lush and abundant scenery on the hike to Salto El Limon

You can also combine the different trails and walk one of the trails to get to the waterfall and another one to get back. Motoconchos and little public busses are plying the route along the trailheads, so if you choose this option you won’t have a problem getting back to your initial starting point or to your car.

Interestingly enough, there is not only El Limón Waterfall when it comes to waterfalls in this area. Right below Salto Del Limón, just a few feet away, is another pretty waterfall. You can go pass there independently from the trail you choose. If you arrive at Sendero El Café, you will see this waterfall anyway.

A smaller waterfall below Salto El Limon

There is also the smaller waterfall from a side river which I mentioned above, you pass it when using the Senderos Franklin, Manzana, Arroyo Surdido, La Javilla and Olga.

Another waterfall on the way to Salto El Limon

If you’d like to explore the region further, take yourself a local guide and a GPS and continue in the open terrain, as there are many streams, little cascades and unknown waterfalls. I once ventured out a little bit and saw a sneak peek of what’s possible but have to go back one day to deeper explore this region. However, please note that this is only for the adventurous people of you. If you are just on vacation for one week in the Dominican Republic, better stick to the marked trails or the guided excursions.

Summary: what is the best way to visit Salto El Limón Waterfall?

As always, the answer is “it depends”.

If you are staying in Punta Cana and would like to visit Salto El Limón Waterfall just for a day trip, it is impossible to do this on your own. In this case, your best option is the air excursion * as it is considerably smoother and more exclusive plus you can enjoy marvelous views from the sky. However, if this is above your budget you can also go with the land excursion *, just be prepared for a very long (but action-filled) day. You can see the best Punta Cana to Samaná excursions in the text above.

In case you have some days to spare, I highly recommend a multi-day road trip from Punta Cana, Santo Domingo or any other region in the Dominican Republic to Samaná. You can not only see the waterfall Salto El Limón, but also the other pristine and beautiful spots the peninsula has to offer, among them many virgin beaches . If you need any help crafting an itinerary, let me know via my travel coaching request .

If you are already in Samaná, you have two options. You can either go with one of the guided tours starting from your accommodation * or you try to organize everything on your own. If you are staying in a resort or a villa and are not fancy to negotiate, to haggle and to prepare your daily itinerary, I would recommend a guided excursion as this is the smoothest way to visit El Limón Waterfall. You can also decide if you want to hike or horseback ride on these tours.

On the other side, if you are an adventurer, have experience in traveling developing countries independently and are in an at least decent shape to hike the trails, you can explore Salto De Limón on your own. Thanks to the signs and the maps on every trailhead, it is possible to walk this without a guide as long as you hike carefully.

It doesn’t matter which option you choose, you will have a great experience when visiting Salto El Limón Waterfall as it is one of the most beautiful waterfalls in the Dominican Republic. Make sure you visit as early as possible (before 9 am) or as late as possible (after 3 pm) to have as few other people as possible around you. Take your swimsuits, camera, sufficient water and hiking boots with you and enjoy a marvelous day in the abundant and lush nature of the Samaná peninsula. If you want to put the icing on the cake of an unforgettable Punta Cana vacation you shall decide on the Samaná Explorer from Punta Cana by plane excursion *. If El Limón Waterfall is too far for you and you prefer closer waterfalls, have a look at all the waterfalls reachable from Punta Cana in under 3 hours .
