Joey King got to live out every Swiftie’s dream by starring in not one, but two Taylor Swift music videos. On this morning’s episode of The Drew Barrymore Show , she reflected on the “mind-blowing” experience she had while working with the beloved pop star.

According to King, she was only 10 years old when she appeared in Swift’s music video for “ Mean ” when her “Speak Now” album was first released in 2010. The actress told host Drew Barrymore and co-host Ross Mathews that she’s grown closer to Swift as she’s gotten older, most recently starring in the music video for “ I Can See You (Taylor’s Version) ” from the album “Speak Now (Taylor’s Version),” which came out last summer.

“I was a kid so she was supportive and sweet. But then we became more friendly as I got older,” King said. “When she asked me to be a part of the ‘I Can See You’ music video, it was like full-circle of the ‘Speak Now (Taylor’s Version)’ book-ending. It was so special.”

Eagle-eyed Swifties, like Barrymore, can even find King’s original outfit from the “Mean” music video displayed in a glass case in the “I Can See You (Taylor’s Version)” music video.

When Barrymore asked King what Swift was like as a person, she described the Grammy Award-winning musician as “so overwhelmingly normal and kind.”

“She’s just really cool. She just wants to hang and chat about normal, fun stuff,” King gushed. “What better role model? I was so obsessed with her when I was 10 and I got the opportunity to work with her. It was just mind-blowing to me. Then I’m now 24 and I still feel this awe.”

Barrymore told her guest that she was “so glad” that they were in each other’s lives, adding, “I love the work that you do together. And I love hearing what a good, nice, kind, normal person she is. That’s all I get from her.”

She continued, “I have to say, one of my favorite things increasingly, is her writing. I just cannot handle what an incredible poet she is. And the lyrics and the music and raising two girls who are like almost 10 and 12, this is the hero we need. I love her. I’m gonna shut up.”

IR-2024-95, April 5, 2024

WASHINGTON —The Internal Revenue Service today advised taxpayers, including self-employed individuals, retirees, investors, businesses and corporations about the April 15 deadline for first quarter estimated tax payments for tax year 2024.

Since income taxes are a pay-as-you go process, the law requires individuals who do not have taxes withheld to pay taxes as income is received or earned throughout the year. Most people meet their tax obligations by having their taxes deducted from their paychecks, pension payments, Social Security benefits or certain other government payments including unemployment compensation.

Generally, taxpayers who are self-employed or in the gig economy are required to make estimated tax payments . Likewise, retirees, investors and others frequently need to make these payments because a significant portion of their income is not subject to withholding.

When estimating quarterly tax payments, taxpayers should include all forms of earned income, including part-time work, side jobs or the sale of goods or services commonly reported on Form 1099-K .

Income such as interest, dividends, capital gains, alimony and rental income is normally not subject to withholding. By making quarterly estimated tax payments, taxpayers can avoid penalties and uphold their tax responsibilities.

Certain groups of taxpayers, including farmers and fishers, recent retirees, individuals with disabilities, those receiving irregular income and victims of disasters are eligible for exceptions to penalties and special regulations .

Following recent disasters, eligible taxpayers in Tennessee , Connecticut , West Virginia , Michigan , California and Washington have an extended deadline for 2024 estimated tax payments until June 17, 2024. Similarly, eligible taxpayers in Alaska , Maine and Rhode Island have until July 15, 2024, and eligible taxpayers in Hawaii have until Aug. 7, 2024. In addition, taxpayers who live or have a business in Israel, Gaza or the West Bank, and certain other taxpayers affected by the terrorist attacks in the State of Israel , have until Oct. 7, 2024, to make estimated tax payments.

Paying estimated taxes

Taxpayers can rely on Form 1040-ES, Estimated Tax for Individuals , for comprehensive instructions on computing their estimated taxes.

Opting for the IRS Online Account streamlines the payment process, allowing taxpayers to view their payment history, monitor pending payments and access pertinent tax information. Taxpayers have several options to make an estimated tax payment, including IRS Direct Pay , debit card, credit card, digital wallet or the Treasury Department's Electronic Federal Tax Payment System (EFTPS) .

To pay electronically and for more information on other payment options, visit IRS.gov/payments . If paying by check, be sure to make the check payable to the "United States Treasury."

Publication 505, Tax Withholding and Estimated Tax , offers detailed information for individuals navigating dividend or capital gain income, alternative minimum tax or self-employment tax, or who have other special situations.

The IRS recommends taxpayers use the Tax Withholding Estimator tool to accurately determine the appropriate amount of tax withheld from paychecks.

Regularly monitoring withheld taxes helps mitigate the risk of underpayment, reducing the likelihood of unexpected tax bills or penalties during tax season. It also allows individuals to adjust withholding upfront, leading to larger paychecks during the year and potentially smaller refunds at tax time.

Filing Options

The IRS encourages people to file their tax returns electronically and choose direct deposit for faster refunds. Filing electronically reduces tax return errors because tax software does the calculations, flags common errors and prompts taxpayers for missing information.

The IRS offers free online and in-person tax preparation options for qualifying taxpayers through the IRS Free File program and the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance and Tax Counseling for the Elderly programs .

In addition, the Direct File pilot program, a new option that allows eligible taxpayers to file their federal tax returns online directly with the IRS for free, is currently available in 12 participating states.

IRS.gov offers tax assistance 24/7. To address general tax concerns, taxpayers can access various online tools on the IRS website, to include the Interactive Tax Assistant , tax topics and frequently asked questions to get answers to common questions.

How Barron’s Misjudged Pfizer’s Value Creation Potential

Just yesterday, Barron’s published an insightful article explaining its mistake just over a year ago (February 5, 2023) when it published a piece with the headline “ Why Pfizer’s stock is a buy .” The predicted uptick in performance never materialized.

Barron’s current article notes that if it had paid attention to the Pfizer’s Long-Term Return—5 years, 10 years, or even 20 years—it would have realized that Pfizer’s value creation performance has been steadily below average for a long time, even including the bonanza generated by the Covid vaccine developed by its partner, BionTech. An abrupt improvement in value creation was therefore highly unlikely.

Although the complex adaptive nature of organizations does not permit scientific with-and-without experiments to determine what causes what, or predict the future with certainty, the stock market provides us with a cornucopia of information about past value creation of public companies and consensus predictions and inferences about the future. The stock market can be used for many purposes, including short- and long-term investing, gambling on variations, fund raising, company promotion and more. More important, it can be used for calm assessments of how much value firms are creating for their stakeholders.

Finding one’s way through the maze of data can be challenging. The 5-Year Total Return can be a useful place to start the assessment.

Since a firm’s 5-year Total Return (defined below in Annex 1) reflects “the wisdom of crowds” about the direction and the velocity of a firm’s value creation performance over a sustained period, it can often be the best starting point for making meaningful inferences about

· the nature and causes of past performance.

· the likely velocity of future value creation.

· performance in relation to peers i.e. firms in the same sector.

· performance in relation to all public firms.

· the relative performance of firms of different sizes.

Thus when the 5-Year Total Return of a firm is higher than the 5-Year Total Return of the S&P 500, we can reach a preliminary conclusion that the firm has been steadily creating value for its stakeholders at a faster rate than the average S&P 500 stock over the period.

This is the beginning of the analysis, not the final answer. There may be many other factors to be considered such as sector peculiarities, changes in management or talent, likely competition, economic upheavals, and so on. But at least it provides us a starting point for evaluating these factors.

Two-Thirds Of Firms In The Dow Are Below Average Value Creators

Let’s take the example of the Dow Jones Industrial Average, commonly known as “the Dow”. It contains 30 highly respected “blue chip” firms. These are firms that are internationally recognized, well-established, considered to be financially sound, and publicly traded.

Despite the Dow’s well-known limits as a measure of the overall stock market , the Dow has become synonymous in the public mind with the performance of the U.S. stock market in general. When people say the stock market has gone up or down, they are usually referring to changes in the Dow.

The public is less aware that the performance of the 30 firms in the Dow varies markedly. Some firms consistently perform way above average, while two-thirds of firms in the Dow have been perform consistently below average for the last 5 years, i.e. they have a lower 5-Year Return than the average of all 500 firms in the S&P 500. (Figure 2)

Thus the 5-Year Total Return enables us to see that, despite their sterling reputations, only 12 of the 30 firms in the Dow have been creating value for their stakeholders at a faster rate over 5 years than the average of all 500 firms in the S&P 500.

Meanwhile, the often-criticized big tech firms are above-average value-creators. Overall, the picture are consistent with the hypothesis that a paradigm shift in management is under way.

The 5-Year Return Helps Put Anecdotal Accounts In Context

The 5-year Total Return can also be used to supplement anecdotal accounts of value creation performance. For instance, Columbia Business School professor Rita McGrath has provided us with a brilliant anecdotal account of how Verizon’s processes systematically destroy customer value: “ The Better Your Automated Customer Service Options, the Worse Your Customer Service Experience .” Verizon’s very low value-creation performance can be seen in the table in Figure 3. Verizon is at the bottom.. Its performance in relation to its peers can be seen even more clearly in Figure 4. In this way, "a picture can be worth a thousand words."

Graphical Depictions Reveal Significant Fluctuations

Other insights can emerge when the 5-Year Total Return is presented graphically. Thus one can see how the firm’s total return has been affected by overall economic ups and downs. (See Figure 5) The 5-year Total Return of the big tech firms such as Microsoft and Amazon, are all net positive compared to the S&P 500, despite declines in 2021. By contrast, Verizon continued its steadily-negative trajectory throughout the 5-year period.

"a very long time": reacher's future update makes roscoe's return inevitable.

Roscoe didn't appear in Reacher season 2, but an Amazon update makes Willa Fitzgerald's comeback in a future season all but inevitable.

• Amazon signals multiple future seasons of Reacher are planned, meaning Roscoe's return is inevitable at some point.
• Roscoe's return would have been less likely if Reacher season 3 was potentially the final season.
• Season 2 of Reacher set the stage for Roscoe's potential comeback, even allowing for a possible romantic reconciliation.

The prospect of Roscoe returning in a future Reacher season looks even more likely after an exciting update from Amazon. Played by Willa Fitzgerald, Roscoe served as one of Reacher 's main cast members in season 1, and the small-town cop struck up a budding romance with Alan Ritchson's titanic titular traveler. Because of his nomadic nature, however, Reacher and Roscoe parted ways during Reacher season 1's ending , and Fitzgerald did not appear whatsoever in season 2.

Reacher season 3 has been confirmed by Amazon, but where the franchise goes from there was previously unclear. Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon Studios , has now clarified the situation, stating, " We’ll have Alan as long as he will play Jack Reacher... hopefully that’s for a very, very, very long time. " Not only does that all but confirm Reacher season 4 will happen, it paves the way for a much longer run beyond that. With more than 20 Jack Reacher books by Lee Child , there is no shortage of source material, and Ritchson himself wants to " explore as many of these books as [his] body will allow. "

How Old Alan Ritchson's Jack Reacher Is (& How It Compares To The Books)

Amazon's reacher promise means plenty of chances to bring back roscoe, more seasons means more opportunities for roscoe's return.

The long-term vision both Amazon and Alan Ritchson clearly have means that Roscoe will inevitably return sooner or later. If Reacher season 3 was all that Amazon had left in the tank, that wouldn't leave a great deal of scope for a Roscoe comeback, especially since her character does not naturally fit into Persuader , which season 3 is based on. If there was any chance of Reacher ending soon, Willa Fitzgerald never appearing again would be a real risk. With Amazon openly declaring its intention to produce Reacher for as long as possible, however, there is ample opportunity for Roscoe to resurface. Sooner or later, with enough seasons, it will happen.

It is highly improbable that Reacher will reach seasons 5, 6 and 7 without at least a small cameo from Willa Fitzgerald's character.

Through Neagley and Finlay, Reacher has already set a precedent for bringing back familiar faces. The chances of Roscoe appearing in Reacher season 3 look dubious because of Persuader 's story, but it is highly improbable that Amazon's show will reach seasons 5, 6 and 7 without at least a small cameo from Willa Fitzgerald's character. Now that Jennifer Salke's comments have made Reacher season 5 and beyond very realistic, Roscoe's return looks like a done deal at some point on that journey.

Reacher Season 2 Already Set Up Roscoe's Return

Roscoe didn't appear in reacher season 2, but was teased.

Roscoe may have been conspicuous by her absence in Reacher season 2, but the Amazon show's sophomore run certainly laid the groundwork for her future role. Firstly, Reacher broke Lee Child's book canon to pull another season 1 character, Malcolm Goodwin's Finlay, into the season 2 narrative. Beyond proving the show's willingness to revisit past adventures, Finlay's cameo demonstrated Reacher calling upon the allies he made in Margrave. If the hobo hero can recruit Finlay, there is no reason he couldn't one day do the same with Roscoe.

If Jack Reacher does have an "endgame" romance somewhere on the horizon, Roscoe remains the most likely candidate.

Reacher season 2's ending also allows for a future romantic reconciliation between Reacher and Roscoe. During one last motel room fumble, Dixon ruled out the prospect of a long-term relationship with Reacher, drawing a line under their fling. If Jack Reacher does have an "endgame" romance somewhere on the horizon, therefore, Roscoe remains the most likely candidate.

Finally, Reacher has subtly alluded towards settling down once his adventures are over. During an uncharacteristically revealing conversation with O'Donnell in season 2, episode 4, Reacher raised the possibility of eventually laying down roots with a small home and four or five dogs. O'Donnell questioned whether Reacher would be joined by a woman in this hypothetical future, and despite playing down Dixon's chances of being that woman, he didn't denounce the possibility itself.

An 80-year-old had a stroke during a Norwegian cruise excursion. After the ship left her behind on an African island, her family tracked her journey home using an Apple AirTag.

• Julie Lenkoff had a stroke during a Norwegian cruise-sponsored tour on an African island, her son-in-law said.
• The cruise continued sailing, and the tour company said they left her with other stranded cruisers.
• The family said Norwegian failed to contact them while Lenkoff was abroad. They used an AirTag to track her journey home.

It wasn't a surprise to Julie Lenkoff's family that she was going on another cruise.

The 80-year-old has visited 120 countries, speaks 10 languages, and has been on countless cruises. Lenkoff is an experienced traveler, so no one batted an eye when she boarded a 21-day Norwegian cruise along the coast of Africa by herself on March 20, Kurt Gies, Lenkoff's son-in-law, told Business Insider.

But her family was shocked when another cruise passenger phoned Lenkoff's daughter, Lana Gies, to tell her they were with Lenkoff, Kurt said. She had been released from a hospital, could hardly speak, was losing her vision, and was on the African island of São Tomé and Príncipe.

Kurt told BI Lenkoff had a stroke during a cruise-sponsored excursion and that the tour operator and cruise company left her at a hospital, where she was later discharged and left to figure out her own way home.

Kurt said a group of stranded tourists helped Lenkoff return to the US, where she remains in serious condition at the Stanford Medical Center.

"We had the means, the technology, and the ability to navigate this massive network to get her home," Kurt said. "I can only imagine if a family didn't or if that person was truly by themselves. What would've happened?"

The family says they have other stranded cruisers to thank for Lenkoff's return

On March 27, day eight of the Norwegian cruise, passengers disembarked the ship to explore São Tomé and Príncipe.

Kurt said Lenkoff joined a cruise-sponsored excursion with the tour company Navetur Equatour. During the tour, she passed out and fell, Diogo Beirão, the chief operating officer of the tour company, confirmed to BI. When Lenkoff regained consciousness, he said she couldn't speak English and had lost feeling in the right side of her body.

At the time, Beirão said the main concern was if Lenkoff had broken a bone or experienced a concussion. Kurt said doctors in the US later confirmed that Lenkoff had a stroke.

Beirão told BI that his tour guides brought Lenkoff back to the dock, where he says a nurse from the Norwegian cruise evaluated her on the pier.

In a statement sent to BI, a Norwegian cruise representative said that "on March 27, 2024, an 80-year-old woman was medically disembarked after being evaluated by our onboard medical team, who thought it best that she receive further assessment and treatment as needed from a local hospital."

Beirão said Lenkoff was transported to the closest hospital, which was "not very comfortable" because it "had no private rooms, just curtains." However, Beirão said he believes it was the right decision not to let her reboard the cruise.

Kurt said Norwegian brought Lenkoff the belongings from her room; however, her credit cards and cash were lost. He added that the tour company later found the missing wallet in a tour van, which was brought to Lenkoff more than 24 hours after she was released from the hospital.

Kurt said he and the rest of Lenkoff's family had no idea this was happening since Norwegian hadn't contacted them.

Meanwhile, a group of eight people were on a separate, private tour of São Tomé and Príncipe. BI previously reported that the tour ran into issues, and the group missed the ship's boarding deadline .

The group was stranded on the island without cash or medications and with one working credit card, which passengers Jill and Jay Campbell owned. The group found a hotel, contacted the closest American consulate, and planned to meet the ship at its next port in the Gambia.

As all this was happening, Kurt said, Lenkoff was released from the hospital.

Beirão said he was unaware that Lenkoff had a stroke, but he visited her at the hospital, and "she was not totally functional" but "could speak very well." While Lenkoff could communicate, Beirão said she often forgot what she was trying to say mid-sentence.

In Norwegian's statement, the representative said: "We attempted to call the guest several times, and as we were unable to reach her, we worked directly with our port agent in São Tomé and Príncipe, an African island nation, to receive updates about the guest."

"In instances such as these," the statement continued, "as the guest was released from the hospital and in a coherent state, our protocol is to contact the guest directly, as we would not have the authority to share any medical details with anyone else without their expressed consent."

Kurt said there are no phone or WhatsApp records of Norwegian reaching out on her cellphone, and he believes that family members should've been contacted in this instance since the company could not reach Lenkoff to confirm she was in a coherent state.

After being discharged, Kurt said the tour company connected the Americans with Lenkoff.

"You have people figuring out how they're getting off this island, and they're given the responsibility to take care of an 80-year-old woman who just had a stroke," Kurt said.

At the time, Lenkoff had no way to pay for anything, so the Campbells provided Lenkoff with food and a place to sleep, Kurt said.

"I truly believe sometimes we're put in certain places for a reason, and I believe we were put in this place for the 80-year-old woman who was left alone. God forbid what would have happened to that lady if we were not here," Jay Campbell told North Carolina's WRAL .

Kurt said Lenkoff was still having trouble speaking and had started to lose her vision.

Using Lenkoff's phone, Jill Campbell called Lenkoff's daughter to tell her what happened. Around the same time, the American consulate called, though Kurt said the family was unsure how the consulate learned about Lenkoff's state.

Kurt said he and Lana attempted to reach Norwegian multiple times but couldn't connect with anyone at the company.

"It was decided that we need to get Julie off that island," he said. "No one at Norwegian was going to take responsibility for it."

The Norwegian representative told BI Lenkoff had been "escorted on a flight to Lisbon, Portugal, and then put in the care of airport staff to continue her journey to the United States, where she has now made a safe return."

Kurt said all of Lenkoff's travel arrangements were "made by her family" and that it wasn't Norwegian who escorted her, adding that the "airlines took responsibility for ensuring she got safely on each plane segment during her journey home."

He said Lenkoff flew to Lisbon, then to Toronto, and finally to San Francisco.

Thankfully, he said, Lana had sent her mom with an Apple AirTag so the family could watch Lenkoff make the trip back to the US.

The Apple product has become popular for tracking everything from missing suitcases to lost golfing equipment and a magician's sound equipment . Some parents are even using them to keep track of their children . According to Benzinga , Apple sold $1 billion worth of Airtags within two years of releasing the tracking device.

Kurt said he and Lana used the AirTag to follow Lenkoff in Lisbon as she reached her next gate.

"We were able to track her movement across the world as she was coming home, and that was a huge relief for us," he said.

Once Lenkoff arrived in California, Kurt said she was medically evacuated to the Stanford Medical Center.

"They pull her out on a gurney and this huge smile comes across her face as she sees her daughter for the first time," he told BI.

Today, Lenkoff is in critical condition

Since arriving at the hospital in California, Kurt told BI that Lenkoff has undergone numerous tests and scans. He said doctors believe she may have also had a heart attack, and while she was at the Stanford Medical Center, she experienced a second stroke.

Kurt said Lenkoff remains in a serious condition.

Meanwhile, the Gieses have continued to try to reach Norwegian. Kurt said two junior staffers have reached out to learn more about what happened, but he said no one from the cruise line had taken responsibility for not contacting Lenkoff's emergency contacts.

Kurt said the experience has taught him and his family that they should not rely on cruise companies to keep passengers safe.

Kurt heard from the Campbells that the group made it back on the ship on Wednesday. When everyone is healthy and back in the US, he said they plan to meet with the Campbells to thank them.

"We truly believe that our mother would've died had she been left to her own devices," Kurt said. "The Campbells are now members of our family. They are the true heroes of this story."
