Imagine relaxing at a cafe with a cup of  Greek coffee  overlooking the sparkling Aegean Sea.

You probably want to share this moment with friends and on Instagram, but your stunning photos will have to wait until you have an internet connection and everyone knows you cannot rely on the free Wifi most service establishments offer.

Unless, of course, you have portable WiFi in Greece . As you plan your  trip to the Greek Isles , consider renting or buying a pocket mobile hotspot to ensure internet access wherever you go.

What Is Portable Wifi?

computer wifi in greece

As the name implies, portable WiFi is a device you can take with you to provide an internet connection anywhere you go.  It's a personal hotspot that connects your phone, laptop, or tablet to the internet.

To use portable WiFi, you need a device that typically isn't much bigger than a credit card.

Connection speeds and strength vary by provider, but most portable WiFi devices in Greece work well enough to keep you connected throughout the country.

Streaming movies might not be possible, but you should be able to check your email, get directions, buy tickets, and browse the internet in Greece at affordable prices while exploring Greece .

Why You Need Pocket WiFi in Greece

tablet wifi in greece

For most, a mobile device is a necessity. Even if you don't intend to make phone calls while visiting Greece, your phone most likely serves as your camera, google maps, translator, calculator, and more.

You need a reliable connection to order transportation from a rideshare service or buy advance tickets to the  best museums in Athens .

It's  easy to find public WiFi in most major cities , particularly in hotels and restaurants , but the unlimited Wifi that is promised isn't always reliable, especially in remote areas.

Once you leave the hotel reception, you might not find a public WiFi connection when needed. Public internet can also present a  security risk  around the world if you don't use a VPN, especially in crowded tourist areas.

One way to overcome this challenge is to purchase a local SIM card that allows you to use your wifi enabled device on the company address's local network.

SIM cards in Greece are affordable and easy to find, but they require purchasing the right plan with an adequate data allowance so you can stay connected.

Most programs also include local and international calling minutes, which you may not need or use, so make sure to look for the one with unlimited internet instead.

If you don't plan to make phone calls while you explore the many regions of Greece and the Greek islands , pocket wifi may be the better option for a good signal and fast, unlimited internet.

Travelers can purchase or rent a portable wifi device and a data plan that best meets their needs and price.

Many companies offer unlimited data plans for specific periods (such as seven days), so you have peace of mind that you can get internet service whenever and wherever you need it.

What to Look for in Portable WiFi in Greece

When shopping for pocket WiFi in Greece, consider the following factors.

  • Location:  If you're searching online for WiFi rental before your trip, ensure the device you select will work in Greece.
  • Some devices only work in certain countries or parts of the country. Confirm that you'll be able to use your pocket WiFi in the places you plan to visit.
  • How long you will need pocket WiFi in Greece:  Most WiFi rental device providers charge a daily fee for the hotspot device plus the data plan. Universal pocket WiFi that you can use in many countries is a good investment if you travel a lot. Some devices even provide a wireless internet connection on airplanes.
  • Depending on how long you plan to visit Greece and how often you travel, it may be most cost-effective to purchase the device outright rather than renting.
  • Your data needs:  Knowing how you plan to use the internet connection during your trip to Greece determines how much data you need to purchase.
  • If you only plan to check ferry schedules or get directions, you won't need as much data as you would if you plan to upload hundreds of photos.

Portable WIFI Greece : four solutions to remain connected

Portable WIFI Greece : four solutions to remain connected

Who has heard about the Trojan Horse, the Odyssey, the Hellenic Culture of the origin of the Olympic Games, Greece is the world cradle of Culture and is today one of the most attractive destinations for travelers seeking souvenirs, images, videos, historical documentary photos among others. The most traditional Mediterranean Gastronomy and one of the ancient cities with a historical legacy full of beautiful millenary and historical architectures, attractions that make it today one of the most sought-after destinations for agencies today. In addition Greece is a center that unites the most diverse cultures of Europe, Asia and North Africa which makes it much more attractive to visit. Travelers who have the experience of visiting it require communication via the Internet and in real time to capture and save and share its contents without missing any detail of images, photos, videos among others. This will be possible only if you manage to stay connected all the time and everywhere through a wifi access point anywhere in Ancient Greece.

These are the most used options in Greece.

This presentation is a very reasonable outline for you to have a criterion when selecting the best way to stay connected when you are traveling in Greater Greece. The most common internet services to make a comparison, as to the wifi pocket device for mobile in Greece that is the best option when you are visiting the historical and ancestral world of Greece.

CONNECTED TO YOUR FREE WIFI IN GREECE

As in all countries the Free coverage guarantees its coverage to most of the big cities of Greece. Most access points are concentrated; in the popular Internet cafes, libraries, historical centers, hotels, airports and other places with a significant flow of people. It should be noted that their access tends to be limited, the delay in updating websites, the slow in sending and downloading files. Almost all the cities of the European Union, are framed in the range of having an access to Internet of high demand, increases considerably the possibilities of risks of being attacked by computer piracy through Hacker specialized in spying and subtracting your personal information, or attacks of malicious programs that are inoculated to infect the software of your mobile.

ROAMING DATA IN GREECE

The use of the 3G or 4G network along the path of "roaming data" allows you to use the internet network in Greece, which represents in this presentation of the options, the most expensive of which we are reviewing. By activating your roaming data plan, when you step on Greek soil, you expose yourself to paying a price that is highly superior to the mobile internet rate of your country of origin. The local operator will send you by SMS the price proposed by the operator, from its first step in the foreign country, this option means being willing to pay a bill for very expensive mobile service that could cause you a discomfort at the end of the month, creating discomfort for the surprise that is usually observe the amount to pay in relation to the consumption and use of these packages Roaming or Itinerant.

CARD PREPAYMENT IN GREECE

The initiative and use of the so-called "prepaid cards" are widespread in Greece, but their use has decreased in terms of travelers, so much so that it has raised concern in many operators of these SIM, which are proposing more affordable prices with competition and prizes to make their plans more attractive. Prepaid cards throughout Europe ensure a very good Internet connection, however, very few networks cover the entire Greek country, apart from the fact that there are operators with very poor network quality; also when you buy your card, you subscribe a new temporary number for your mobile during your stay, limiting your access to the Internet with your personal data. Remember that the more you use the Internet, the more expensive your bill will be and the more amazement will be noticed on your face.

Our Travelwifi Review (formerly Tep): Hello Travel WiFi, Goodbye Roaming Charges

This is our honest Travelwifi review , based on a few years of use.

Updated in 2023! Tep has rebranded to the Travelwifi brand, with a new website, and new pricing and plans. We’ve updated this post with the new info.

See prices here.

The Travelwifi dongle was originally called Tep Wireless, but they rebranded a couple of years ago. We refer to it as the Tep occasionally this review, but it’s officially called the Travelwifi pocket Wi-Fi.

We first tested the original Travelwifi device a few years ago, but have now switched to the faster new Travelwifi Sapphire 2. Everything we talk about in article is up to date and refers to the newest Travelwifi model – the sticker on the device says Tep, but the Wi-Fi device is the exact same Sapphire 2 device Travelwifi rents and sells right now..

Good Internet access is a necessity for us. We need it for online learning, for keeping our business running, and to keep us connected when we travel. Without the Internet, this blog would grind to a halt. Plus, we use WiFi to keep in touch with family and friends, and stream TV and movies in our downtime.

Getting good Internet is a constant struggle. Using data roaming can cost a fortune. Airport WiFi is often expensive, and slow with short time limits, restaurant WiFi is hit and miss at best, and hotel WiFi is weak and spotty. Buying a local SIM card requires an unlocked phone, and can be a hassle.

Looking for something a little different? Check out the other travel wifi hotspots that we’ve reviewed.

Travewifi wireless review

How do you beat expensive data roaming charges, hassling with local SIM cards, or scrounging WiFi at airports and restaurants?

Wouldn’t it be nice to have a portable, reliable, Internet that travels wherever you do, at a reasonable cost?

Oh wait, that does exist. And it’s called Travelwifi wirelesss hotspot.

Travewifi is a small, portable WiFi device that lets you bring your own Internet access with you wherever you go.

Get prices here.

Will it work anywhere in the world?

Not everywhere, but darn close. Travelwifi wireless works in the UK, Spain, France and most European countries. It also works great in the US, Canada, Mexico, Asia, the Middle East, South America, Central America, Oceania, and more plus they’re adding more countries all the time.

How do I get a Travelwifi hotspot?

You just go online, order your wireless device, and it is shipped to you, along with a handy pre-paid envelope for shipping.

So how does it work?

We got our Wi-Fi devicejust before we took off on a three week long road trip across Western Canada, with a bonus flight and week in New Hampshire in the USA.

I didn’t have a chance to look at the Tep until the night before we left, and I unboxed it and got it up and running within five minutes (including the time it took to make a video).

What did we think?

During our road trip, I was slammed with work, and the Travelwifi device was a godsend. It kept me connected, meaning that I could write blog posts, send invoices, and catch up on my email all while on the road.

The little Tep even saved my bacon late one night after a few days at the lake, when seven year old Jordan could only be soothed by Netflix when she was covered in itchy mosquito bites and couldn’t sleep.

Thank you Tep for that one, especially.

We took the Travel wifi from the West Coast of Canada, all the way to the center of Canada in Manitoba, plus a road trip through most of New Hampshire and then back home again. All in all, it was well over 50 hours of total driving time.

Since the Tep works off cellular data, we only hit a couple of small dead spots on our trip where we couldn’t get a WiFi signal, and those were where there was no cell signal to be found. One was in the Rocky Mountains in British Columbia, and that lasted about 20 minutes of our drive, and the other was a zone of about 30 minutes where we had a spotty connection in Saskatchewan. Given that Western Canada, and especially the Rocky Mountains, are known for spotty cell service, that’s pretty impressive.

2021 Update: We’ve  had a little travewifi for almost three years now! We’ve used our travelwifi on multiple trips to Mexico and the United States, and within Canada, and it’s worked well every time. We’re now using the newest model, the Sapphire 2 4G LTE.

I liked my Travelwifi Wireless so much that we bought our own wifi device (you can rent or buy online) for whenever we travel.

How fast is the Travelwifi pocket wifi, really?

We gave the hotspot a week long trial during our last trip to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.

Over the course of a week, the hotspot clocked in consistently at a speed over 30 Mbps. That’s a pretty good speed, rivaling a lot of broadband at home internet connections.

30 Mbps is  fast to stream video on multiple devices, and plenty fast for email, phone calls, social media, and streaming. Tep itself says that the 4G speed is likely to be around 18.6 Mbps, but we’ve found our Tep 4G to be faster almost everywhere we’ve tested.

Does Travelwifi throttle your speed?

Travelwifi says that speeds will slow after you use up your plan amount (1GB, 3 GB, or 5 GB) on 4G plans in a 24 hour period. We found that our data speeds were still strong after using up our plan limit, but yours may vary.

After you use up your data limit, Travelwifi says your connection speed is throttled to a maximum of 256 kbs. At that speed you can still do social media, email, and light browsing. Your connection speed will return to normal the next day.

What we didn’t like

We had our Tep shipped to Canada, and also returned it from Canada. The shipping cost was relatively expensive ($21.95), but that’s unfortunately pretty standard when shipping to or from Canada.

Other countries are much cheaper. Getting a Travelwifi shipped to the USA costs only  $8.00 for standard shipping. You can even pick up and drop off your Tep Wireless at some airports in France, the UK, and Mexico for free.

Who would the Travelwifi be good for?

Honestly, anyone who wants a stable Internet connection that travels with them wherever they go.

The Tep would be great for:

  • anyone who wants to be able to video chat or keep in touch with family or business partners
  • people like us, who work online, and need to be connected to keep their business up and running
  • anyone who’s traveling through multiple countries, and who doesn’t want to deal with multiple country SIMs or data roaming charges
  • anyone who wants a fast, easy solution to having WiFi when they travel

Should you use data roaming, a local SIM  or get a WiFi hotspot?

Using data roaming on a cell is an alternative to WiFi, but roaming costs are notoriously high and even then you’re often limited to only one provider in another country. If you haven’t personally been hit with a sky-high roaming bill after a trip, it’s almost guaranteed that a close friend or family member has.

We used to buy local SIM cards when we travel, but it’s a huge hassle to determine which SIM to buy, tracking down a place to pick one up and overcome the language barrier. Plus, data limits and extra data charges can be a problem.

Get the price here.

What is the Tep price?

This looks like a pretty useful addition to the travel gear list! I could have done with one of these when cycling through Europe recently. I was really shocked with how bad WiFi access still is when staying in budget accommodation in Northern Europe, and it looks like this would have been perfect!

It’s a really good device that covers many countries that is important for a multicountry travel. TEP Wireless keeps the network connection secure and stable with a good speed of 7,2mbps and it is featured in a global mobile guide Savvy.one

Why are the pictures showing Skyroam device? Is the Tep wireless device just a brand labeled Skyroam?

Tep Wireless was using the same device but had it’s own SIM card and system. They now have their own device (it’s called the Teppy) however we haven’t tried it yet since the old device still works fine for us.

Sounds a little expensive at $9.95/day. Is that US$? Maybe ok if have business and deductible but for the average traveler, it would be too much – $300/month.

Ron, I think the idea is that you can share it with your travel partners (up to 5 devices at once) so the cost becomes more negligible. The Tep Wireless is also great if you’re bouncing between countries without having to grab a new SIM card in each country.

Lots of higher end hotels charge $8 or more a day for the use of their WiFi. Sometimes that’s per guest and doesn’t work outside your room, so $8.95 a day to rent one (the price has dropped) or $8 if you own the device to take it with you doesn’t sound too unrealistic.

Here in Canada, most companies charge $10 a day for out of country data and they have very low limits on the amount you can use and only certain providers they work with. Tep deals with multiple providers and I love how if you own the device, like we do, you can use it for 24 hours and then stop using it.

When we’re traveling, we often use it here and there as we need it rather than the entire duration to save on costs. That said, if we’re somewhere and need or want internet, we pull it out of our bag and voila, instant WiFi.

Would this work for deployed military??

I can’t speak for rental – but I bought a Skyroam hotspot through TEP 18 months ago. It never really worked properly. Most recently I was in Denmark and the device just froze at 15%. Apparently, this can be a software or firmware problem – but the company wasn’t; able to solve it and told me my device was defective and out of warranty. Part of the problem appears to be that there are no emails about updating your device routinely that go out to customers. So, you don’t know that you have a problem until you are on a trip – need Wi-Fi and are screwed. There are no links on the company website to software of firmware updates – you have to contact customer support – which makes no sense. Plus – you need to have a computer (connect to Wi-Fi) with you to perform the update – so it’s like a catch 22. Overall the customer support responds quickly but can’t really help you. Also keep in mind that they ask you for your order number for any help provided – so I would write that sucker down and paste it to the back of your device since you won’t be able to access any old emails about the order easily if you have problems. I’m going to try Keepgo instead – I’ve heard they have less technical problems.

Hi there! Wondering what your view is around data privacy when using this travel pocket wifi? thank you

It’s not any different than using a cell device frankly. Always a slight danger that something is eavesdropping but much higher chances it’s an existing app on your phone, tablet or Windows device than something built into this. You can always go with a VPN to make things even more secure if you want but it’s not something that overly concerns me to be honest and is likely much safer than using free public WIFI. Check out our post on VPN’s to see if you want to go the VPN route. https://www.thebarefootnomad.com/travel-tips/should-you-use-a-vpn-for-travel/

Greece for Nomads

Internet connection for Digital Nomads in Greece

When it comes to working remotely, having mobile and a good internet connection is a staple. Find below our complete guide on how to get internet in Greece.

It seems that the number of digital nomads flocking to Greece for the laidback lifestyle is progressively growing every day. The best thing about working remotely from Greece is that you can sit back in a café with a coffee in hand and work at your own pace.

If you’ve visited Greece before you’ll probably be aware that in certain areas the internet is rather on the slow side or in some cases non-existent. However, you can always check download speeds of a certain area before you travel to get an idea of what it will be like before you arrive.

Greece Internet Speed

According to OOKLA, the speed test global index ranks fixed broadband in Greece at 97, along with mobile internet which is currently ranked at 28.

mobile internet Greece - Greece for Nomads

Mobile Internet in Greece

It is simple enough to set up your mobile phone for moving to Greece, and we have a couple of options to help you get started. These include buying a prepaid sim card or getting a mobile contract.

Firstly, you can grab a local Greece sim card, you will be able to pick these up in most supermarkets or Greek mobile companies stores and they’re fairly priced too.

Cosmote, Wind and Vodafone are the most commonly used mobile service providers in Greece, depending on which area of Greece you will be visiting there will be a service provider that will give you better coverage than others.

If you are travelling to the north of Greece, Cosmote will provide you better coverage over the other networks, whereas if you’re planning on visiting an island or more remote areas Vodafone and Cosmote will provide the best coverage.

Of course, there are areas where mobile phone service will be intermittent, or you may experience no service at all.

Another option would be turning on your global roaming before you start your journey, of course this can work out on the expensive side if this is not part of your existing phone plan, so be sure to check if it is included before using this method. However, if you are coming from another EU country you may be able to use your local Gb for free in Greece. Those of us living in Spain, for example, find it cheaper and more convenient using a Spanish data plan rather than purchasing a Greek SIM card.

Many accommodations advertise themselves as having wifi but often it is simply a public network that is virtually impossible to get on or a very slow network. If you’re planning on staying in Greece for several months, consider getting a sim with a decent data package and using your mobile hotspot when you work.

Best Mobile Network in Greece

The main mobile data providers in Greece are:

Cosmote Vodafone Wind   Frog (Using Cosmote Network) Q (Using Wind network)

Cosmote  has by far the best mobile internet network in Greece but there are specific locations like smaller islands that we have experienced better results with Vodafone and Wind networks.

Especially if you are headed to an off the beaten path area, it is worth it to check the 4G coverage of your destination before choosing a mobile data provider.

You can find a coverage map of the main ones by clicking on the pictures:

Greece Mobile Internet - Cosmote

In broad terms, 4G is available in most of the country, but you may spot some small secluded areas from the above maps where it’s missing. In that case you have two options: either change destination or rely on the wifi! 5G is also recently available in some parts of Athens.

If you are lucky enough to be enjoying Greece for a longer period, you may want to consider setting up a broadband wifi connection in your apartment. Private internet connections are normally much better, although this does vary between regions and different companies. If you are planning to get your own flat and base yourself in one city, these connections are time-consuming to set up and most companies require a one year commitment. However, the improved stability and when possible, the reliability of the fiber optic will be highly beneficial for your daily work.

Keep in mind that for all new connections you need a contract and a landline. Unlike other countries where you can get a standalone wifi contract, in Greece you will be assigned a landline even if you don’t need it.

Greece for Nomads Tips

  • Ask for a Speed Test and confirm 5G/4G availability before booking any accommodation.
  • Check OpenSignal speed test coverage maps for the places that you are planning to visit.
  • Check our curated list of cafe / coworking spaces and accommodations where 4G or/and Wifi has been tested from our team.

Where else can I find wifi?

On your digital nomad journey, you will come to find that a lot of the cafes you visit along the way, especially in the larger cities will have free WIFI, whether it’s a reliable connection is another story entirely.

For example, in bigger cities such as Athens users can expect up 17Mbps, unlike some of the smaller islands where you could expect considerably less.

Our team is preparing a list of our favorite laptop friendly Cafes and internet spots around Greece which we liked for the atmosphere and working setting/high-speed Internet. Check them here and contact us if you have any new spot to be added!

Another option is to get your hands on a 4G dongle to attach to your laptop, this means you will have the ability to work from almost any location from your apartment balcony right down to the beach!

  • Coworking Areas

Coworking areas seem to be a growing trend with more and more popping up along the way, as the number of digital nomads continues to rise people are creating more of these areas to meet the growing demand. Check our full list here .

They often boast a good WIFI signal, so many digital nomads enjoy working from these spaces as they know they can count on a good connection.

These work spaces have since proved to be an excellent space for nomads to work together, network and socialise, they have almost become hubs where they people are able to meet up and connect with other likeminded nomads.

You’ll be more likely to find these types of areas in larger cities such as Athens or Thessaloniki, if you’ve decided on moving to a smaller town or island you may not have this option.

Whether you want to update your Insta on the go or need to keep in touch with the office, losing your internet signal can be very frustrating.

But it’s annoying (and can be unsafe) to rely on public Wi-Fi signals in every coffee shop you visit, and sometimes when traveling to remote locations, public connections are just not available.

Instead, you can invest in a mobile Wi-Fi hotspot to ensure safe, secure, and reliable internet access anywhere you go. Here’s what you need to consider when choosing the best one for you.

A Wi-Fi hotspot is a battery-powered wireless router that travels with you. Designed to be compact and lightweight enough to slip into your purse or pocket, a mobile Wi-Fi hotspot device brings the internet to your phone, tablet, or laptop, no matter where in the world it finds you.

These gadgets are a big bonus for anyone traveling away from public Wi-Fi or those looking for a secure connection. A bit like a cellular device, your Wi-Fi hotspot provides access to invisible signals in the sky, all of which can help you to upload pics or receive your emails on the move.

You will need to pay for the data you use, which can be done in the form of packages or day passes that offer unlimited access for a set period of time.

Bottom Line: Using 3G or 4G (and maybe even 5G in the coming months), these smart little devices emit a reliable and incredibly useful Wi-Fi signal that you can hook your favorite gadgets and devices to while away from home.

Battery Life

Most batteries will run happily for between 5-6 hours at a time. If you are traveling somewhere with easy access to electricity, you should be able to charge overnight to ensure your hotspot works when you need it for your daily adventures. If you spend a disproportionately large amount of time online, you may want to look at a device that offers a longer battery life.

Size and Weight

Your Wi-Fi hotspot should be small enough to be carried everywhere with you. After all, if it’s not entirely portable, what exactly is the point? Slimline, lightweight, and often smaller than the smartphone you are trying to connect to, these devices are compact and clever.

Wi-Fi Support

Because some mobile internet providers are better than others, the coverage you receive from any Wi-Fi hotspot can also vary. For example, 2.4GHz gives coverage at a more extended range but will transmit the data at a much slower speed. A 5GHz band, on the other hand, will provide less range with data transmitted at a much faster speed.

Though they may be small, they are still mighty, and most hotspot devices will have a built-in display. At the very least, the display should indicate remaining battery life and current Wi-Fi signal strength. Others may offer bonus features like SMS messages or touch screen modes.

Card Reader

Some portable Wi-Fi hotspots come with the capability to read MicroSD memory cards, which can be used to store and access files from your laptop or home computer. You can also share your stored files with the people who use your network when you want them to have access.

MicroSD memory cards are not typically included with the purchase of a Wi-Fi hotspot, but they are a useful addition that allows you to send and receive SMS messages and save images, music, and other data-heavy files.

Mobile data is delivered using 1 of 2 types of cellular signals in different countries and regions around the world. These cellular standards allow for communication between individuals; without them, we would not be able to keep in touch on such a global scale.

Known as GSM and CDMA, each standard converts both incoming and outgoing radio waves in entirely different ways. Before you buy a hotspot, you need to understand its function and where you’ll be able to use it.

Global System for Mobile Communication is used in most countries around the world. In the U.S., only AT&T and T-Mobile use GSM. GSM uses Time Division Multiple Access (or TDMA), which allocates time slots to multiple conversation streams and alters how phones transmit their information. Doing this requires a SIM card (or “subscriber identification module” card).

It is the SIM card that holds all the information you need to make calls, use mobile internet, and store your contacts. The SIM card tells the device what services you have access to and is vital for GSM communications on the go.

CDMA is used in countries including Russia and the U.S. ( Sprint , Verizon , and US Cellular), and it grants users full access to a wide spectrum of bandwidth, meaning more users can connect at any one time. It also encodes each signal, meaning that every conversation remains protected and filtered.

CDMA does not rely on SIM cards as the device has the technology built into it from the carriers’ networks. This once meant that if you wanted to change carriers, you would need to buy a new device altogether. These days though, many CDMA devices offer the capability to use a SIM card too, especially for those on LTE networks.

Bottom Line: Different countries (and different carriers) use different technologies. In the U.S., Sprint, Verizon, and US Cellular use CDMA, while AT&T and T-Mobile use GSM. When it comes to purchasing a hotspot, make sure you understand what type you’re buying, what countries it will work in, and what providers it will function with.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best mobile wi-fi hotspot for travelers.

Our vote is for the GlocalMe G4 4G LTE Mobile Hotspot.

Do mobile hotspots work internationally?

Many mobile hotspots do work internationally, but this would depend on what plan your device is on. Many plans include a set amount of international data, while others offer unlimited usage for a set fee.

Can mobile hotspot replace home Wi-Fi?

Although mobile hotspots can be used in place of home Wi-Fi, it usually carries higher usage costs. If you are a heavy downloader or video streamer, you would likely be better off registering for a home Wi-Fi service.

Which is better Wi-Fi or hotspot?

Hotspots usually offer slower speeds and less security than Wi-Fi; however, it is convenient if you’re on the move, and there are no guarantees that you will be able to access a Wi-Fi connection.

I assume that by pocket wifi you mean a small portable "router". You put a local sim in and make this a hotspot to connect all your other devices.

Usually these devices csot 45 - 50 euros. That's a device that if you have many devices you 'll be using it in *every* trip. Rental costs added, isn't it a better idea to get one, instead of renting? Theis big thing is that they are unlocked and you can put it any local sim card.

I'd suggest you purchase one that is EU compatible to get over any supply issues you may bump on when here.

-----------------------

Ther are three cell phone service companies in Greece:

Cosmote, Vodafone, Wind.

All offer a solution, cost is around 45 - 50 euros but it's for purchase, not rental.

Here an example: https://www.cosmote.gr/mobile/cosmoportal/page/HCP/xml/Personal__contractplans__IOTG-Karta-Full-Pack-me-wifi/section/IOTG_onRequest_prs?gclid=CjwKEAiA9om3BRDpzvihsdGnhTwSJAAkSewLYO8DDV1tjY4oBOHjWOSVycJ-R_BHlTuDGIeXtXS-UhoCGSPw_wcB

Other than that, the usual way to do this around the world is to have a smartphone or tablette that will make the deal. This way you earn two things:

1. you can make it a hotspot and use it exactly as a pocket wi-fi system or

2. you can take it along and have a phone on its own.

Are you sure your other, already existing devices cannot support a hot-spot function? It may be a locked phone or tablette, still if it's unlocked. . .

Explore the option of a European phone or even better an android tablet, that can double as smartphone and / or tablet and hotspot. You 'll definitely spend more but you 'll get more too. It may be something of interest.

For the records...

I ended up buying one that worked beautifully. I could use it to provide wifi for my phone's gps and I could make local and foreign calls via Skype. Unlimited data for 6.00 a day. I will definitely use it again.

Can you pls advice which one exactly you bought? How the plan is called? THANKS

' class=

It would be great to hear which one you bought and which mobile provider you used. Thank you!

Thank you for that

Many thanks,

I've used WiZiFi, not as an end user, but as a local tech reviewer. Very reliable TP-LINK brand MiFi is used, offering very good 4G and WiFi signal, while the battery lasts for 8-10 hours at continues usage. In standby mode could last for almost double time.

Finally, WiZiFi warehouse is located in Athens center, its delivery and customer-care is very effective, either in the case of last minute changes from customer.

I hope I've helped.

Buying a Prepaid Sim Card for Greece in 2024

travel wifi greece

Planning your trip to Greece and wondering what is the best way to stay connected? Avoid high roaming charges and don't get fooled by slow overseas data roaming plans. Get yourself a local prepaid sim card on arrival or order an e-sim card for Greece on the internet. This is a complete guide for finding the best sim card for your trip to Greece in 2024.

Find out everything you need to know about buying a prepaid sim card in Greece, where to buy a sim card, a comparison of the mobile internet providers, up to date prices as per March 2024, the best e-sim cards for Greece, the best 4G/5G network, my recommendation and experiences, info about buying a sim card at Athens Airport , international sim cards and more.

Being a  full time nomadic travel blogger  since 2012 I have been looking for the best ways to get connected for more than 10 years now. In the past I always used to buy a local prepaid sim card in every country  on arrival, nowadays I pretty much always use e-sim cards to stay connected.

Looking for the best way to stay connected is a vital part of my travel planning. Since I like to document all my travel tips and I am also trying to  visit every country in the world  you can already find more than 200 sim card guides on Traveltomtom from all over the world:  USA , Europe , Asia ,  Canada ,  Dubai , Israel ,  South Africa , Brazil , Colombia ,  Kenya , Thailand , Vietnam , Bali , Vietnam ,  Sydney ,  Turkey ,  Europe , Paris , Amsterdam , Italy , Spain , etc.

Traveltomtom also wrote a complete guide for buying a sim card at Athens Airport and a guide only focussed on e-sims with a comparison of the best e-sim cards for Greece in 2024 .

Why buying a sim card in Greece

Staying connected while traveling makes life so much easier. Ordering an Uber, getting directions from Google Maps, checking out nearby restaurants with good reviews, finding a cool rooftop bar and so on. There are so many reasons I can come up for you to have a working data connection on your phone while traveling to Greece.

Don't rely on WiFi. Yes, most hotels offer free WiFi and so do many bars and restaurants in Greece, but that is no guarantee it is working. The WiFi signal in your hotel room could be too weak or the WiFi is too slow to upload anything. Also keep in mind that public WiFi connections are UNSECURED networks. Therefore it is also recommended to use a VPN for security reasons.

Buying a local prepaid sim card in Greece or an e-sim card for Greece on the internet is easy, fast and cheap!

If you prefer to NOT swap sim cards and your phone is not e-sim card compatible then you should look into a portable WiFi device. Personally I am not a fan, but read my honest review about these pocket WiFi's in my article about how to get WiFi abroad and make up your own opinion.

My recommendation

Traveltomtom recommends a Cosmote or Vodafone sim card for Greece. Cosmote has the best 4G/5G network in Greece and especially for island hopping in Greece a Cosmote sim card is recommended.

A Vodafone sim card is the second best. They have a great prepaid sim cards for tourists, but you have to buy them from the street vendors in Greece to get the best deal. More info below.

The cheapest way to stay connected when traveling to Greece in 2024 is an e-sim card as there are already e-sim card plans for Greece starting from just $4.5 USD. But the best thing about e-sim cards is that you arrange everything online and as soon as the plane lands you are connected.

Traveltomtom recommends ordering an e-sim card for Greece via Nomad , Airalo or SimOptions depending on what kind of e-sim card you prefer.

Check out Traveltomtom's complete guide with the  best e-sim cards for traveling to Greece in 2024 .

Greece prepaid sim cards and EU data roaming

Is Greece your first stop on your trip to Europe? If so, then make sure the prepaid sim card you buy in Greece includes free EU roaming. Most prepaid sim card plans from Greece allow EU data roaming, but there are some limitations and restriction of the usage of your data allowance outside Greece.

Therefore always ask the sim card provider about the EU data roaming restrictions when buying a prepaid sim card in Greece.

Free EU data roaming means that the data, voice and text allowance on your Greece sim card can be used in every other country in the EU at no extra costs! Which means when you travel onwards to Paris, Amsterdam, Poland or Estonia you can keep using your Greece prepaid sim card.

For more info on EU data roaming check out my complete guide for  buying a local prepaid sim card on arrival in Europe in 2024 .

If you want to arrive prepared for your trip to Europe then order a sim card for traveling in Europe on the internet. Which one? Check out Traveltomtom's comparison of the best sim cards for a trip to Europe in 2024 .

Mobile internet operators in Greece

There are 3 main mobile operators in Greece: Nova, Cosmote and Vodafone. Nova is the new Wind, as per January 2023 Wind rebranded to Nova.

All providers have stores around Athens city center and in every main tourist destination in Greece as well as on the popular tourist islands in Greece.

However, the official mobile phone stores from Nova, Vodafone or Cosmote is not where you find the best prepaid sim card deals for tourists. The best prepaid sim cards for tourists in Greece are sold by street vendors.

In most countries it is pretty regulated and prices are fixed no matter which store you go. In Greece I discovered that sim card prices in stores are fixed, but there are official resellers roaming the streets and popular tourist attractions selling prepaid sim cards for tourists.

Registration process

When buying a sim card in Greece you need to bring your passport. The mobile internet provider needs to take a copy or a photo of your photo ID to register your prepaid sim card. You will receive a sim card with a Greek number starting with +30 which is registered on your name and passport number.

If you don't feel comfortable with this procedure you should look into buying an international prepaid sim card for Greece or an e-sim card for Greece , as these ways of staying connected when traveling to Greece do not require the registration with your passport, just your email.

Where to buy a sim card in Greece

Buying a sim card at athens airport.

In general buying a sim card on arrival at the airport is always more expensive then buying a sim card elsewhere. At Athens airport there are very limited options for buying a prepaid sim card for traveling in Greece.

There is a Sim Local store in the baggage claim area which sells prepaid sim cards for tourists and another store in the Arrival Hall. Check out my complete guide for buying a sim card at Athens Airport in 2024 .

The Sim Local stores at Athens Airport are open from 06.00 AM till 10.00 PM. You can pay by credit card or in Euros. There are ATMs.

Buying a Greece sim card from a street vendor

street vendors sim card greece

Street vendors often have great sim card deals for Greece but you can only find them in Athens. Personally I have never seen them in places like Mykonos, Crete, Rhodes, Lesbos , Santorini or other tourist destinations in Greece.

It sounds a bit weird to buy a sim card on the streets from someone who takes a photo of your ID or passport? Don't worry you can trust them! They are official employees of either Vodafone, Nova or Cosmote and wearing their branded clothes.

They organize everything on the spot and they won't let you walk away before your data sim card for Greece is activated and working.

Where to find them? Mostly around the bigger metro stations in Athens city center you will find youngsters selling sim cards.

Another big advantage of these youngsters selling prepaid sim cards for Greece is that they speak really good English as they are obviously targeting tourists. The employees in the phone shops often speak very little English.

Buying a sim card on a Greek island

In case your trip to Greece starts on an island and you want to buy a sim card for Greece on arrival then I strongly advice you to go to a Vodafone or Cosmote store as they have the best 4G/5G coverage on the Greek islands. Nova has expensive prepaid plans and the Nova 4G/5G coverage can be really disappointing on the Greek Islands.

Flying to Santorini? There is a shop that sells sim cards after customs. In the city center of Thera the heart of Santorini island there is a Vodafone, Cosmote and Nova store. The same counts for the airport in Crete. After customs you can buy a sim card at Crete Airport, but there are as well multiple phone stores around Crete island.

By ordering a sim card for Greece on the internet you save all the hassle of buying a prepaid sim card on arrival in Greece. There are 2 options for buying a Greece sim card online: prepaid international sim cards for Greece or e-sim cards for Greece.

If your phone is compatible then you simply arrange everything on the internet and you arrive prepared for your trip to Greece. As soon as the plane touches the ground you can already enjoy data on your phone.

For more detailed info check out Traveltomtom's complete guide with everything you need to know before ordering an e-sim card for traveling to Greece in 2024 .

Prices prepaid sim cards in Greece in 2024

All the info and prepaid sim card plans below are update in March 2024 with the latest prices. Prices are in Euros: $1 USD = €0.92 EUR and €1 EUR = $1.09 USD.

Vodafone Greece prepaid sim card

vodafone greece prepaid sim card plans 2024

When buying a Vodafone prepaid sim card in Greece you can expect the following 3 prepaid sim card deals in one of their stores:

  • 12 GB data in all of Europe for 15 days = €9.90 ($11 USD)
  • 10 GB data in all of Europe + 100 minutes in Europe + 50 minutes international calls for 15 days = €9.90 ($11 USD)
  • 15 GB data in all of Europe + 200 minutes in Europe + 120 minutes international calls for 30 days = €17.90 ($20 USD)

For more info check the  Vodafone Greece website . But wait...

You can also buy a Vodafone Greece prepaid sim card from a street vendor:

  • Unlimited data + 200 minutes + 50 international minutes = €12 EUR - $13 USD

As you can see the street vendors sell completely different Vodafone Greece prepaid sim card plans. Vodafone Greece does not provide e-sim cards, they only sell physical prepaid sim cards for tourists.

Nova Greece prepaid sim card

nova free2go greece prepaid sim card plans 2024

Nova has its own prepaid sim card brand called Free2Go.

  • 1 GB data + 100 minutes and sms = €12 EUR - $13 USD
  • 2 GB data + unlimited minutes and 500 sms = €15 EUR - $16.5 USD

For more info check out the Free2Go website , but compared to Vodafone these Nova/Free2Go prepaid sim card plans are totally useless.

Remember Nova used to be Wind, they rebranded in January 2023.

nova prepaid sim card greece

However, there still are the friendly youngster at the metro stations or randomly on the streets selling Nova Mobile prepaid sim cards for tourists.

  • Unlimited data (only 5 GB for Europe) + 1000 minutes - valid for 30 days = €12 EUR - $13 USD

Conclusion: Whenever you want to buy a Nova sim card in Greece go to the street vendors as they offer much better prepaid sim card deals than in the Nova stores.

Nova stores and street vendors do NOT provide e-sim cards, they only sell physical prepaid sim cards for tourists.

Cosmote prepaid sim card

cosmote greece prepaid sim card plans 2024

Cosmote is the biggest mobile internet provider in Greece with the best 5G network in Greece. Cosmote stores are much more than mobile services, they much rather sell flatscreens, laptops, drones, etc. than prepaid sim cards for tourists, so don't expect the best service.

A Cosmote prepaid sim card costs €13.5 EUR ($15 USD) and you get 2.5 GB data + unlimited minutes + 400 sms. Not really a prepaid sim card deal that makes us happy right?

You can top up with any of the above prepaid sim card data packages:

  • 4 GB for 1 month = €8.5 EUR - $9.4 USD
  • 6 GB for 7 days = €4 EUR - $4.4 USD

Find more info on the  Cosmote website .

Then there are the street vendors for Cosmote Greece:

  • 10 GB data + 100 minutes for 1 month = €10 EUR - $11 USD
  • 5 GB data for 1 month = €6 EUR - $6.6 USD

The Cosmote street vendors were super friendly, spoke good English and offer better Cosmote prepaid sim card plans than in the Cosmote stores.

Cosmote does NOT provide e-sim cards for tourists, they only sell physical prepaid sim cards.

Frog Mobile

frog greece prepaid sim card plans 2024

Frog Mobile is part of the Cosmote company and operates on the Cosmote network. A Frog Mobile sim card is free, but requires the addiotion of a data package with a top-up. They have some cheap Greece sim card deals compared to the other mobile internet providers. See the above prices and plans.

  • 6 GB data for 25 days = €5.35 EUR - $6 USD
  • 10 GB data + 200 minutes for 30 days = €8.90 EUR - $10 USD
  • 15 GB data + 500 minutes for 30 days = €13.50 EUR - $15 USD

Frog sim cards limit the free EU data roaming to about 80% of your package. For example in the 15 GB package, only 13.5 GB is valid within the EU, outside of Greece. For more info about Frog Mobile check their website.

Best 4G/5G mobile network in Greece in 2024

Now that we have compared the Greece prepaid sim card plans for 2024, lets have a look at the  4G/5G network coverage maps for Greece .

Let's compared the 4G/5G mobile data network coverage of Nova, Vodafone and Cosmote and find out which mobile internet provider has the best network coverage and which sim card is recommended for island hopping in Greece or traveling in mainland Greece.

Is there 5G in Greece?

Yes, there is 5G in Greece, but it is not as advanced as in most other European countries. When island hopping in Greece don't expect to find 5G everywhere. However, most islands in Greece have a 4G/LTE signal.

Nova 4G/5G network coverage map

nova 4g 5g network coverage map greece 2024

Cosmote 4G/5G network coverage map

cosmote 4g 5g network coverage map greece 2024

Although the above mobile data network coverage maps are updated for 2024 they are not 100% accurate. However, they are a great reference to compare the 4G/5G networks of the mobile internet providers in Greece in 2024.

It leaves no doubt that Cosmote has the best 4G/5G network in Greece followed by Vodafone and then Nova. Cosmote has by far the most extensive 5G network in Greece in 2024. Nova has the weakest 4G/5G mobile network in Greece.

Based on the network coverage Traveltomtom recommends a Cosmote sim card for traveling in Greece.

Best prepaid sim card in Greece in 2024

vodafone prepaid sim card greece

As I mentioned earlier buying a prepaid sim card in Greece is easy, but it is hard to find the best sim card for tourists. The phone stores have set prices, but the street vendors have much better prepaid sim cards for tourists. But when and where to find them can be challenging.

The best prepaid sim card plans in Greece can be found from the students selling sim cards near the metro stations at for example Omonia Square. Here they sell Vodafone, Cosmote or Nova prepaid sim cards for €12 EUR ($13 USD) with unlimited data.

In fact this is the best best prepaid sim card deal for Greece.

However, it will cost you some effort finding these street vendors and it is uncertain when and where they are... I don't know exactly, but on weekdays they are mostly around the entrances of metro stations from morning till afternoon. On Saturdays and Sundays I have never seen them.

You can take a leap of faith and it will save you a couple dollars if you find a street vendor, but when traveling to Greece Traveltomtom recommends buying a sim card online. You will be online as soon as the plane lands.

E-sim cards are the easiest way to stay connected and also the fastest. You can find amazing e-sim card deals for traveling to Greece on the internet: 15 GB data for 15 days including unlimited calls in all of Europe.

Comparison of eSIM for a trip to Greece

When comparing different eSIM brands we should take into account all the features that will determine if the card fits the needs of our trip. That’s why we prepared this table with all the essential information about each brand to help you choose. Later on we will go deeper into all the important details so you won’t miss any information.

1. Holafly, eSIM for Greece with Unlimited Data and customer support in English

Holafly is one of the best options to buy eSIM cards as all its plans have unlimited data for those who want to travel without worrying about running out of internet. In addition, the brand offers a 24/7 customer support service in Spanish , English, German, French, Italian and Japanese that responds in less than a minute by chat or WhatsApp, and is currently the company with the best customer rating on Trustpilot with a score of 4.6.

eSIM Greece

On Holafly ‘s website you can find 8 unlimited data plans ranging from 19€ to 99€ depending on the duration of the contract, which can be 5, 7, 10, 15, 15, 20, 30, 60 and 90 days. It is perfect for long stays, as well as for digital nomads or express trips to Greece. On their website you can also find a Europe-wide eSIM card that includes 32 countries so you can move from one country to another without having to change eSIMs.

The Holafly eSIM cards can be installed easily by scanning the QR code that you will receive by email once you have completed the purchase. The installation can also be done manually without the need for a computer, simply writing a code in the settings of your mobile that you can consult in the mail or in your App, which is very convenient to control the duration of the data plan.

After testing Holafly’s eSIM cards we can say that they are one of the most expensive options on the market, but that in the end they are profitable since all their plans have unlimited data and you will not need to recharge at any time during your trip. Here we leave you this ranking where we evaluate from 1 to 5 all the features of Holafly’s eSIM cards for Greece based on our experience.

In this post you can read about our experience with Holafly eSIM cards and some users’ opinions: Our review of Holafly eSIM: is it worth it?

2. Airalo, the cheapest eSIM brand for Greece

Airalo is along with Holafly one of the best-known brands in the world to buy an international travel eSIM. This company, founded in Singapore in 2019 by Turkish entrepreneurs Abraham Burak and Ahmet Bahadir Özdemir, was one of the first to offer these services, and has a wide coverage of countries where they offer eSIM cards.

Although Airalo is one of the cheapest brands on the market, the truth is that in the long run it can get expensive as their data plans have very limited gigabytes that can run out at any time, and their customer service takes a long time to respond.

eSIM Greece

Airalo’s eSIM card data plans for Greece have durations of 7, 15 and 30 days, and prices range from $5 to $49. They also offer an eSIM card for Europe that includes 39 countries. The brand has an App where you can buy and install the eSIM, and later recharge it when you run out of data.

Airalo’s eSIM for Greece offers 6 data plans so you can choose the one that best suits your trip. We compared customer reviews and feedback on Trustpilot and found that Airalo has one of the lowest scores of 3.7. Here you can find the ranking for each aspect of Airalo and in this post you can also read about our opinion of the brand: Our review of Airalo eSIM: is it worth it?

3. Truphone and their App

Truphone is a UK company that offers eSIM cards to connect to the internet in over 160 countries. It was a pioneer in the industry and the first global operator to launch eSIM for iPad, Apple Watch and Google Pixel devices . In addition, since 2016 it has been a technology partner of Apple , which grants it a great competitive advantage and makes it easier to install eSIMs on its devices.

For Greece the brand offers 6 plans; two with a duration of one day and 100MB and 1GB, and 4 other 30-day plans with 3GB, 5GB, 10GB and 20GB. Prices range from €5 to €35 . The 100MB plan is free for you to try their product for one day. The problem with this brand is that their data plans have very few gigabytes (maximum 20GB) and this means that you can run out of internet in the middle of your trip.

eSIM Greece

On the other hand, Truphone also offers eSIM plans for Europe that include 36 countries. It’s a good option if we are organizing a long trip across several countries.

Although on the website you can check the data plans and all the details about their eSIMs, to buy the eSIM card you will need to download the mobile application . Once downloaded, you will need to create an account filling in your details directly or through Google or Facebook. You can then choose the country and data plan you need for your trip and pay securely. A great advantage of the App is that it detects if your phone is compatible with the eSIM before allowing you to complete the purchase.

The installation and activation processes are done through the App , so you won’t need to scan any QR codes. Just keep in mind that you will need internet to perform the operation.

If you go to Trustpilot you can see that Truphone has over 100 reviews and a score of 1.9, one of the lowest among eSIM card providers. We have also rated the Truphone eSIM card based on our experience and these are our conclusions.

If you want to know more about our experience with Truphone eSIM cards and the opinions of other users visit this post: Our review of Truphone eSIM: is it worth it?

4. SimOptions y their marketplace

SimOptions is an eSIM card marketplace where local mobile carriers in each country sell their eSIM cards. The brand, with offices in Paris, Thailand and Hong Kong, offers data plans for eSIM cards in more than 160 countries and also have regional and global plans.

For Greece you will find four 14-day and 30-day data plans with data limits of 5GB, 8GB, 10GB and 20GB. Prices are a little higher than average and range from $17.9 to $49.9. With most plans you cannot top up the installed eSIM if you run out of data and there are only two eSIMs that include calls and SMS.

eSIM Greece

The main drawback of Sim Options is that its website is a bit chaotic and the data plans, being from different brands , are very disparate and their features vary a lot, not only price, speed or duration, but also technical support, rechargeability or data sharing. This will force you to look in detail at each brand and will make it harder for you to make a decision.

Our personal experience is that with SimOptions cards you waste a lot of time comparing between them. In addition, the price is high, you can only pay in dollars and they don’t give you the guarantee of a good technical support. Here we leave you this ranking where we rate SimOptions eSIM cards from 1 to 5 and in this post you can read about our opinion and that of other customers about the brand: Our review of Sim Options eSIM: is it worth it?

5. Maya Mobile, 30-day data plans for Greece

This company offers eSIM cards for 30 days in Greece . The price of the data packages in this case varies depending on the gigabytes. In total they have 5 packages of 1, 3, 5, 10 gigabytes, and another with unlimited gigabytes. The unlimited data plan is relative as the maximum browsing speed is 5Mbps and after having used 30GB of the plan, it drops to 1Mbps. The price ranges from 5€ to 45€.

eSIM Greece

Like Holafly, Maya Mobile is characterized by the speed and simplicity of its contracting and installation process, which is also done via a QR code that you receive by email. In addition, they have a 100% refund policy of the purchase in the event that the data does not work, which is not usually the case since they have at least two data providers in each country where they offer their services.

Maya Mobile also offers a Europe-wide plan that includes 30 countries and has unlimited data (with maximum speed of 5Mbps dropping to 1Mbps).

With Maya Mobile we consider their plans being very inflexible and only having a duration of 30 days a disadvantage. In Trustpilot you can see that the brand has an average score of 4.4, but there are hardly any comments. Here is the table with the score for each of the features of their eSIM cards.

Conclusion: what is the best eSIM for Greece

In this post we showed that there are many important factors to take into account when comparing eSIM cards since for each type of travel you will have different connection needs. That is why we prepared this section where we talk about our experience which eSIM card is best for Greece.

When we travel we don’t want to run out of data in the middle of our trip, that’s why eSIM cards with unlimited data are the best option . In this case, the only brands that offer unlimited eSIM data plans are Holafly and Maya Mobile, but remember that Maya Mobile’s unlimited data plans are not real, since after using 30GB the browsing speed will drop by half. With some companies like Airalo you can top up the eSIM already installed through their website or App, but the best thing is not having to pay again if you run out of data.

We know it can be tricky to calculate the gigabytes you’ll need during your trip, so we’ve prepared this table to help you make the estimate of the gigabytes you’ll need if you end up choosing an eSIM card with a data limit, which we don’t recommend.

The installation process of eSIM cards is always simple and fast , but it is true that there are some companies that make it even easier. The first thing is to check if your mobile is compatible with the eSIM of the brand. You can check this information on the website of each provider.

The purchase of the eSIM for Greece can be done through the web in the case of some brands such as Holafly or SimOptions , or through the app with Truphone. Holafly’s website is very intuitive and easy to use, while Simoptions’ is quite complicated to understand and you will have to read a lot.

The only brands that allow you to do the installation through the App are Airalo and Truphone , and in the case of Holafly, from the App you will be able to get the code to install the eSIM manually without using a computer. You can also do the installation by scanning a QR code that you will receive by email as soon as you have completed the purchase with Holafly, Airalo, Simoptions or Maya Mobile.

eSIM Greece

On the other hand, it is very important to consider the customer service to help you in the installation process and solve any doubt or problem. Most brands such as Maya Mobile or Airalo have a chat bot that takes a long time to respond and only does so in English. In the case of SimOptions, customer support will depend on the brand of eSIM card you have chosen. In this regard Holafly’s technical support is the best as they respond in less than 1 minute in English, German, French, Italian, Spanish and Japanese through the web chat or by WhatsApp, where a conversation is automatically opened after purchase.

holafly internet abroad

Many times when we travel we want to share data with other devices and only some providers like Airalo and some SimOptions brands make it possible.

But one of the most important aspects is price. The cheapest brands are Airalo and Maya Mobile , however, their data plans are very limited and you’re likely to run out and have to pay again with the top-up. That’s why it’s sometimes advisable to pay a little more and get a eSIM card with unlimited data like Holafly’s to give you peace of mind and avoid having to recharge again.

All in all, Holafly eSIM cards are the best choice for traveling to Greece for their unlimited data and multilingual technical support that responds in less than a minute. With Holafly you will never run out of data on your trip.

Other options for having internet in Greece?

There are several ways to get internet when traveling abroad, however, eSIM cards are our favorite option because of the number of advantages they offer which we are about to detail.

There are other alternatives to connect to internet in Greece that may also interest you. That’s why we have prepared this list with other options, their prices, advantages and disadvantages for you to compare and choose the one that best suits your trip.

1. Buy SIM cards from Cosmote ,  Vodafone Greece  and Nova

This was the most common option until eSIM cards appeared. When you arrive in Greece you can get a SIM card at the airport or in the commercial areas of the cities. There you will find stores of the main telephone companies such as Cosmote ,  Vodafone Greece  and Nova . Despite the fact that this is one of the most widespread methods to have internet, the truth is that it presents several disadvantages as we detail in this table.

The price of SIM cards varies greatly depending on the length of the contract and the gigabytes. A SIM for two weeks costs around €35.

instant data abroad with Holafly

2. Rent a Pocket WiFi for Greece

A Pocket WiFi is a wireless router that allows us to connect to the internet from any location. This system, which is considered one of the most expensive, has the following advantages and disadvantages.

Some of the best brands to rent Pockets Wifi in Greece are Travel Wifi and Wifivox. The plans are contracted per day or per month depending on the company. With Travel Wifi for example, the day costs between €8 and €12, depending on the gigabyte limit. Shipping costs, insurance, extra batteries or car chargers must be added to these fees.

With Travel Wifi you can choose where to receive and deliver the router at approved points or at the post office.

This system may not be cost effective for a short trip. This is why it is usually recommended for longer stays or business trips where the device will always be kept in one place and can be shared among several people.

3. Search for free WiFi networks in Greece

Greece is a very touristy destination where you will have no trouble finding free wifi hotspots in places like department stores, cafes, museums and hotels. However, the great disadvantage of public networks is their vulnerability to hacking. That is why it is recommended to limit their use to a minimum and avoid at all costs making transactions where your personal data might be compromised.

This option should be used with caution for security reasons. Public WiFi hotspots are very vulnerable to hacks or cyberattacks, providing access to private data. It is therefore recommended to spend as little time as possible connected, use it for specific queries and do not expose your personal data.

These are some places where you can find WiFi on your trip to Greece in case of a need: airports, museums, subway, parks, cafes, restaurants and hotels. There are also APPs that tell you where to find WiFi hotspots, as well as Facebook, which also offers this service.

4. Enable roaming for Greece

Data roaming is a service offered by phone companies to continue using your local data plan when traveling to Greece. The cost of this service is usually high, so it is advisable to check with your usual carrier before embarking on your trip, to avoid surprises at the end of the month.

However, residents of European Union countries can continue to use the data contracted in their country at no additional cost.

Frequently asked questions about how to have internet in Greece

eSIM cards allow you to have internet on your mobile phone when you travel abroad without having to remove your usual SIM card, as is the case with SIM cards. This is possible thanks to a chip that is built into the latest generation of mobile phones. The purchase of the eSIM data plan can be done through the website or the App of some brands. Choose your destination, the duration and the gigabytes of the data plan and pay securely.

The installation and activation of the eSIM is a really easy procedure that will only take a few minutes. Once you have verified that your mobile phone is compatible with the product and chosen the data plan that best suits your needs, go to the mobile data settings on your smartphone and select “add data plan”. The camera will then open so you can scan the QR code that you will have received in the mail after the purchase. The installation and activation of your card will then begin. This process must be carried out with an internet connection, which is why it is recommended that you do it before setting off on your trip or as soon as you arrive at the hotel.

Most models of popular brands such as Apple, Samsung, Motorola, Huawei or Google are compatible as long as they are recent models. Several iPads are also compatible. However, it is best to consult the website of each provider, where they will indicate all the compatible models.

SIM cards can be purchased in physical shops or online, with delivery times ranging from 48 to 72 hours. There are also companies that offer same day express delivery.

Most carriers offer packages with data limits. Holafly , unlike the rest, offers a wide variety of unlimited data packages.

It is best to activate it just before your trip as you will need an internet connection.

Data packages usually have a duration of 7 to 30 days, however, there are providers such as Holafly that offer more flexible packages between 5 days and 3 months.

Unlimited data plans do not normally allow data sharing, but plans with a specific number of GBs included do.

The data of the unlimited plans is really unlimited. Note in any case that local mobile operators may temporarily reduce the speed if you make a very intensive use of applications such as Netflix or Youtube. These limits are more intended to avoid network saturation by a few users.

Holafly is a Spanish company launched in 2018 that you can trust, it has been tested by more than 400,000 customers, travel blogs and Youtubers. Holafly has been marketing eSIMs since 2019.

Holafly has over 10,000 positive experiences published on Trustpilot, with a rating of “Excellent” and an average score of 4.6.

SIM Options has both positive and negative reviews, and a lower average Trustpilot rating than Holafly at 3.8. SIM Options is a Hong Kong based company.

Maya is owned by a US company, Maya Virtual Inc. Maya’s reviews on Trustpilot are good, with an average rating of 4.5.

Airalo reviews on Trustpilot are good, with an average score of 3.9.

What is the internet like in Greece?

You’ll be able to find wi-fi at most hotels, cafes, bars and restaurants throughout the well-touristed areas of Greece. Alternatively, you can pick up a local SIM card with a data package for continued access.

There are three main carriers in Greece : Vodafone, Wind and Cosmote. Their prices vary, as does their coverage, but Vodafone is probably the best for a traveller in Greece. A local SIM card with 12 GB of data costs approximately EUR 25 and is valid for one month. There are cheaper options for those spending less time in the country.

To pick up a local SIM, just visit a Vodafone, Wind or Cosmote shop in Athens or in one of the tourist areas of whichever city or island you’re visiting. Top-ups can be done in-store, at supermarkets, or there may be street vendors offering recharges too.

Buying A SIM Card In Greece – Best Options For 2024

Everything you need to know about the best prepaid SIM card you can buy in Greece. Includes information on local operators in Greece, where to buy a Greece SIM card, what documents you need, available data packages and more.

How to buy a SIM card for Greece

How to buy a SIM Card for Greece

Where can I get a Greece SIM card? Tourists and expats traveling to Greece ask this question all the time, as they want to get a Greece SIM card for mobile broadband as soon as they arrive.

It’s hardly surprising! These days, it’s super important to stay connected with friends and relatives around the world. Not to mention posting all the amazing Greece photos from your holiday 🙂

The Herodion theatre in Athens

This guide to the prepaid SIM cards you can get for Greece is here to help. It includes information on:

  • the main providers in Greece
  • the various SIM plans and packages each provider offers
  • what documents you need to get a new SIM
  • where to get your Greek SIM card – stores, street vendors, the Athens airport
  • activating your SIM card and buying bundles
  • coverage, 4G and 5G in Greece
  • eSIM and tourist SIM information
  • why contract phones are not worth it, even if you are living in Greece.

Greece prepaid SIM card providers

There are three local providers in Greece: Cosmote , Vodafone Greece and Nova , formerly known as Wind. Each of these companies offer several types of prepaid SIM cards.

If you are only here for a few days or weeks, any Pay As You Go Greek SIM card you buy will be fine. Whichever operator you choose, your SIM will usually work well at popular destinations such as Athens , Santorini or Mykonos .

Generally speaking though, Cosmote has the best network coverage around Greece. So if you are planning to do lots of traveling in Greece, the best SIM card to get is probably Cosmote.

My top suggestion for the best Greek prepaid card to buy would be Cosmote Frog – if you can find it. This is the best SIM deal for Greece. Alternatively, go for either Cosmote WhatsUp, or Vodafone CU.

I have included more info on all these SIM cards later on in the article.

Greece SIM vs EU SIM

If you already have an SIM card from any EU country, there are no roaming charges. So, there is no real reason to get a Greek SIM if you are only here for a short time, unless you need a local phone number.

To be honest, most SIM cards from the EU (and often the UK) are better value than the Greek ones. Just make sure you are familiar with your provider’s fair usage policy. Plus, note that your EU SIM might not work perfectly everywhere.

Greece SIM vs overseas SIM

In my opinion, if you are visiting from outside the EU, you should definitely get a local SIM. Your provider (e.g. Verizon or T Mobile in the USA) will likely have overseas data plans. However, these will always be a lot more expensive, and may even end up in unexpected costs.

Also, while WiFi is very common in Greece, there will always be a time that you desperately need the Internet and it won’t be available.

A good example is when you are driving around Greece , or if you get lost walking around Ancient Athens . Even with downloading the offline Google Maps, it’s always best to actually have an internet connection.

Finally, a Greek SIM card can also come in handy if you want to book ferry tickets , train tickets, or just confirm your reservation with your hotel. As you will get a local number, you can easily use it for apps like Viber, WhatsApp etc.

What do I need to buy a prepaid Greece SIM card?

To buy a prepaid SIM card for Greece, you will need to show a valid ID document, such as a passport . Wherever you go to get your new card, the seller will either photocopy or take a photo of your passport – this is normal!

According to Greek legislation, you can only purchase a SIM card if you are over 18 years old . If your teenage children want their own SIM cards, you can buy two or more cards using the same passport.

Where to buy a SIM card in Greece

The best places to get your SIM card in Greece are either designated stores, or street vendors in the bigger cities. It’s possible to buy a SIM card at the Athens Airport, but it’s a lot more expensive.

To use your new card, you will need to have an unlocked phone. Some mobile phones come with a dual SIM option, so you can also use your original SIM if you prefer.

Buying a Greece SIM card in a store

All three providers have hundreds of shops across the country where you can easily get a new Greece SIM card. Cosmote SIM cards are also sold at a store chain called Germanos.

A view of Syntagma Square Athens

Here are some of the stores where you can get a SIM card for Greece around Syntagma Square and Plaka , close to the main shopping areas in central Athens:

  • Cosmote Syntagma Square – Mitropoleos 1
  • Cosmote Monastiraki – Athinas 45
  • Germanos Syntagma Square – Stadiou 10
  • Vodafone Syntagma Square – Stadiou 9
  • Vodafone Acropolis – Veikou 72
  • Nova Kolonaki – Patriarchou Ioakim 7
  • Nova Acropolis – Veikou 1

If you are starting your trip at Thessaloniki or one of the Greek islands, you can use Google Maps to find the nearest shop that sells SIMs.

Expect to pay about 10-15 euro to get your new SIM card, including some credit that will enable you to buy data packages, minutes or text bundles. More on this, later.

Getting a Greece SIM card from a street vendor

If you are in Athens, you can also get prepaid SIM card deals from street vendors. These cards are perfectly legitimate, and typically offer much better value than the SIM cards you would find at the stores.

Usually, these vendors have detailed boards out, explaining what they offer and how much it costs. In fact, they are probably the best place to get your SIM card for Greece 🙂

You can find these street vendors close to busy metro stations , such as Syntagma, Monastiraki, Omonia and Victoria. Most of them are young, and they speak at least some level of English as they often work with foreign visitors.

You can easily get a SIM card around Syntagma Square in Athens

And while it might feel strange having a random person on the street take a photo of your passport, you would still have to do the same thing if you went to a store.

Again, you can expect to pay around 10-15 euro for your new SIM card along with some credit which you can use to get a package. The difference is, you will typically get more GB / more minutes than a card you’d find in a shop.

Buying Greek SIM cards at the Athens International Airport

Some visitors would prefer to get hold of a Greece SIM card as soon as they’ve landed at the Athens International Airport. While this is possible, it won’t get you the best deal, plus you may have to face long queues.

Still, you can get a local SIM card at the airport in Athens. You will need to find the SIM LOCAL kiosk at the Arrivals Level, and check their current offers. In summer, their opening hours are usually 6.00-22.00 every day.

How to buy a SIM card at the Athens International Airport

At the time of writing, the only available option is a special travel pass Vodafone Greece package providing 15 GB of data, 200 minutes of calls to local numbers, and 120 minutes of calls to international numbers.

Along with the activation fee, this comes at a total price of 35 euros, which is rather steep when compared to the local services. Still, it’s an option if you want to be connected on the way to your hotel.

Buying a package for your new Greek SIM card

At the time you purchase your new SIM card, you will also need to buy some credit. The vendor will explain how to use your credit, and what packages are available.

You will then need to activate a package that suits your needs. I can’t stress this enough!

Unless you get a package, your credit will disappear in zero time! The easiest way to activate these packages is through an app which you will download on your mobile phone.

In summer, all providers offer unlimited GB deals that are valid for 30 days and cost about 11-13 euros. This is by far the best available deal you can get. You can just ask the seller to activate this, and you are done!

If you are visiting outside summer, you’ll have to check the available packages at the time. Generally speaking, you can buy a package with a certain number of GBs for a set period of time – a day, a week, or a month. Or you can buy a package which gives you both GBs and some minutes / SMS to local phone numbers.

A Cosmote store Greece

A quick overview of prepaid SIM cards for Greece

Let’s have a quick look at the prepaid SIM cards you are most likely to find in Greece.

Cosmote WhatsUp

I switched from a Cosmote contract to a Cosmote WhatsUp prepaid card a few years ago, and never looked back. Even if you move to Greece, contract phones are really not worth it in my opinion. Not only do they tie you to a 2-year contract, but they also work out to be more expensive.

With the WhatsUp package I spend an average of about 14 euro per month for all the GBs and minutes I need… and as I travel a lot around Greece, I need loads!

This SIM card offers many different bundles, including unlimited GB for 10.90 euro in summer. There’s also a DIY bundle that you can customize, and any unused data / minutes are carried over to the next month.

If you want a cheap data only SIM, this is a great option. However, there’s a catch: for the time being, the WhatsUp app is only in Greek, so you’ll need someone who speaks Greek to activate it and top it up. Customer service or street vendor can also do that for you.

You can find more info here (in Greek).

Cosmote Frog

In my opinion, Cosmote Frog is the best SIM card in Greece for tourists and expats. It uses the Cosmote network, offers slightly better value than Cosmote WhatsUp, and the app is also in English.

Unlike Cosmote WhatsUp, with Frog you only pay per second when making a call – which does make a difference. Plus, it gives you several different options for calls abroad.

In Athens, you can get the Cosmote Frog SIM at their flagship store. Their address is Stadiou 51 , very close to Omonia metro. Otherwise, you can always try the street vendors or perhaps order it here .

Overall, Cosmote Frog is not the easiest SIM card to find. Hopefully this will change in the future, as they have great customer service over messenger.

You can find more info here: Cosmote Frog .

Cosmote Cosmokarta

This service from Cosmote is more geared towards people who want to talk a lot. In my opinion, it doesn’t offer any benefits compared to the other Cosmote products, and prices can be higher.

You can find more info here: Cosmote Cosmokarta

SIM card for Greece Vodafone

Vodafone CU

This is another good option for visitors. In summer, they usually offer an unlimited data package valid for a month for 10.90 euro. Their app can be switched to English, so you can use it on your own. I’ve heard mixed opinions about their customer care, but I haven’t used them myself so I don’t have an opinion.

You can find more info here: Vodafone CU

Vodafone You

Offers fairly flexible bundles, but there’s no unlimited data option. If you are a traveler, Vodafone CU will probably suit you better.

You can find more info here: Vodafone You (in Greek)

Vodafone International

Another package from Vodafone Greece, which focuses on call minutes to several different countries. There’s a fairly good option for monthly data as well.

You can find more info here: Vodafone International (in Greek)

This is another option offering unlimited data for 10.60 euro in summer. There’s also a bundle for EU calls.

You can find more info here: Nova F2G

A good selection of bundles, including some with call minutes to international numbers. Unlike some other SIM cards, you only pay per second when making a call.

You can find more info here: Nova MyQ

Tips for expats and nomads staying longer in Greece

If you are only in Greece as a tourist, you initial credit should cover you for the duration of your trip. Your SIM card will remain active for a period of time, so if you are visiting again soon you can re-use it.

However, if you are planning to stay in Greece for a few weeks or months, you will need to top up your credit at some point. You can do it online with a credit card / PayPal, buy a scratch-card with credit at a periptero (kiosk), or top-up in a shop.

You can buy a top-up voucher for Greece at a kiosk

With most plans, you can carry any unused part of the package over to the next month, provided that you add some credit and renew your package before it expires.

It’s important to know that a tax is charged on any top-up voucher. For example, if you top up 13 euro, your balance will only be 11.81. Take that into account if you are planning to buy a package which costs over this amount.

And, in all circumstances, do not forget to buy a new bundle – otherwise, your new credit will run out super quickly!

Also, have a look at this guide with helpful websites for expats in Greece .

Things to know about network coverage in Greece

While 4G (and, sometimes, 5G coverage) is available in Greece, in practice you might experience a slow connection. In fact, the speed of your mobile data can vary a lot, depending on your exact location.

Some carriers work better than others in certain areas – so if you are planning to stay somewhere for long, ask your neighbors what provider they are using. On the whole, Cosmote is probably the most reliable one.

If you are visiting remote islands like Nisyros , Kalymnos or Tilos , or even upcoming islands like Milos , don’t expect to have signal 24/7.

Reception can be affected by weather conditions, such as the meltemi winds . Yes… I’m talking from experience!

Remote areas in Greece don't have good Internet connection

It’s also a good idea to ensure that your cell phone is NOT on automatic network selection. If you are traveling to the Dodecanese islands, like Rhodes or Kos , your phone can automatically log on to Turkish networks, and you can easily lose any remaining credit.

Last, but not least – it is possible to use your phone as a hotspot for all your devices. I have done this many times on various islands where the WiFi was slow, and found that an unlimited data SIM was very useful.

Note that this option might not be able to support some services, such as streaming videos or making a video call. But it still might be useful if the Wi Fi signal is poor.

Using an eSIM / International SIM card in Greece

There are a bunch of International SIM cards / travel SIM cards out there that frequent travelers like to use.

In addition, if your phone supports an eSIM option, you can use an eSIM instead of buying a card in Greece. This will save you some time as you won’t have to find a shop and go through the procedure.

These are some of the companies that I am aware of which come highly recommended. Note that these SIM deals are generally more expensive than a Greek SIM card:

  • Trip Roaming

As I haven’t used an eSIM in Greece yet, I don’t have a personal opinion. If you’ve used any of these, or any others, please comment below with your experience!

How do you get a Cosmote SIM card?

To buy a Cosmote prepaid package, you will need to go to a Cosmote or a Germanos store. Alternatively, you can also buy it from a street vendor. Eitherway, you will need your passport. There is no shop at the Athens airport.

You can get a special Vodafone SIM card at the Athens airport. However, that card it is a lot more expensive than the cards you can get in central Athens.

hi we have a mobile dongle for our house in Greece with the price of data card on the uk can you recommend witch is the best Greek company to get e data sim card thanks M Thompson

In my experience, Cosmote has the best coverage in Greece, so I suppose it would be the same for esims.

Hi, I am grateful to rich information over SIM-card in Greece, but I am wondering if these offers have some kind deal of 100minutes free call and so on??? In hotel, data volume is not a problem at all but the calls are really a headack, right?

Second, no travellers in Greece will only stay there for the whole holiday months (normally two months or more) and will move to other countries such as Italy, France, UK or Danmark. I would like to know which prepaid SIM (first arrival country) can be used in these countries as enough money is re-charges when on the way travelling?

Unfortunately, Greece has the worst deals. You can use any EU SIM card in any EU country, the UK is a bit different but as far as I know it depends on the provider and how new the SIM card is (e.g. my Greek SIM card which I’ve had for several years works fine in the UK, I believe that the same deal won’t work for new cards but I might be wrong). You could get a SIM card in your country of entry (EU) and then see how it works in the other countries. Hope this helps!

Do you know if there a shop in Piraeus where I can get a Greek SIM Card?

I’ll be staying at the Achillion Hotel and prefer a Cosmote card.

Hi – yes there’s one 2 minutes from your hotel – Iroon Polytechneiou 42-44 🙂
