10 experiences to immerse yourself in colombia with avianca airlines.

Colombia is awash with dynamic landscapes and cultural treasures across the breadth of the country, and these immersive experiences take you right to its heart…

avianca tours

From jeep safaris in wildlife-filled wetlands to desert adventures in red-rock canyons, Colombia is home to a whole array of experiences that go beyond the big-hitting sights – and despite feeling off the beaten track, they’re more accessible than you might think. Avianca can whisk you directly from London to Bogotá in around 11 hours. From there, domestic flights with the airline can connect you to more than 20 other destinations in the country. Wondering where to start? We’ve rounded up some of the best lesser-known adventures for anyone looking to delve deep.

From Bogotá to Villavicencio...

If you’re interested in exploring the lesser-visited Eastern Colombian Andes, fly from Bogotá to the city of Villavicencio, an hour south of the capital, thanks to the daily flights with avianca airlines. Here you’ll find yourself in the capital of the scenic Meta department, and at the gateway to the sprawling Eastern Plains.

1. Head out on a Colombian safari in the Llanos Orientales

Think Colombia, think safari? Possibly not – but the sprawling ‘Los llanos’ (or the Eastern Plains) are something of a hidden treasure for wildlife-lovers, with jaguars, pumas, howler monkeys, white-tailed deer and more roaming a network of glimmering rivers, wetlands and forests. Jeep safaris are on hand to show you the highlights as colourful birds flit overhead – there are more than 700 species here, from the red-bellied macaw to the striking scarlet ibis – and it’s all especially magical at sunset, when the sky blazes ruby above the striking savannah.

2. Explore the San Juan de Arama and Mesetas

The Güejar River Canyon (avianca/ProColombia)

For more adventures without the crowds, head to San Juan de Arama and the Masetas. Here you’ll find the Sierra de La Macarena National Park – all lush, jungle-carpeted banks and dramatic ravines – and the Güejar River Canyon, where majestic waterfalls cascade down craggy rocks. Rafting, hiking and swimming are on hand for those looking to get active against a backdrop of towering limestone pillars, and there’s plenty of indigenous culture around San Juan too. You’ll also find a generous array of wildlife – from alligators and otters to a myriad of colourful birds.

3. Be confounded by the Caño Cristales

Caño Cristales (Shutterstock)

Caño Cristales (Shutterstock)

Glowing in a rainbow of red, yellow, green, blue and black, the Caño Cristales is one of Colombia’s most striking phenomena. Created by a native plant that lights up the water when the sun hits it, it’s accessed by a jungle hike from the nearby town of La Macarena. Book a guided tour to see the highlights, and bathe in these mystical, kaleidoscopic waters beside tumbling waterfalls and tropical greenery.

From Bogotá to Colombia's coffee region

Colombia wouldn’t be Colombia without its coffee; if you’re looking to sample the country’s famous produce first-hand, head to Pereira (more than 10 daily flights with avianca from Bogotá) or Armenia (more than five daily flights from Bogotá with avianca).

4. Soak up the heritage of Colombia's coffee farms

The Coffee Cultural Landscape of Colombia has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site and for good reason, with many of its verdant coffee farms offering guided tours and tastings. Head to Finca del Café in the village of Santa Rosa de Cabal for an insight into coffee production accompanied by impressive mountain views, or swing by the Casa Rivera del Cacao in Córdoba to combine coffee tastings with a ‘tree-to-bar’ cocoa experience. If you want get even more in-depth, pay a visit to the National Coffee Park, an all-out theme park close to Armenia dedicated to this precious commodity.

5.  Go birdwatching in the Cocora Valley

The Cocora Valley (Shutterstock)

Home to verdant jungle, mist-capped cloud forest and the world’s tallest palm trees, the Cocora Valley isn’t only known for its coffee farms; it’s also a hotspot for hiking, and boasts some of the country’s best bird-watching. Scarlet-fronted parakeets, yellow-eared parrots and white-throated toucans can all be seen here. For especially good viewing, head to the Valley of the Wax Palms, where trees tower up to 60m high against a backdrop of Andean slopes.

Explore the rest of Colombia

From Santa Marta (10-plus daily flights) to Bucaramanga (10-plus daily flights), Neiva (two daily flights) to Barranquilla (10-plus daily flights), avianca’s domestic flights from Bogotá can take you even further afield. Here are our top recommendations for things to do across the rest of the country.

6. Hike the Mavicure Hills

The Mavicure Hills (avianca/ProColombia)

The Mavicure Hills (avianca/ProColombia)

From pink dolphins and manatees to caimans, jaguars, piranhas and turtles, the Colombian Amazon is something of a dream for nature-lovers, and much of it remains firmly off the tourist trail. For one of the most picturesque and secluded spots, head to the Mavicure Hills, where three giant granite monoliths rise above the jungle beside a confluence of winding rivers. Book a hiking tour to see the highlights with a local guide, who’ll teach you about the indigenous Curripaco and Puinave communities that have long occupied its landscapes.

7. Stroll the beaches of Palomino

The beaches of Palomino (avianca/ProColombia)

The beaches of Palomino (avianca/ProColombia)

Colombia isn’t short on paradise-worthy beaches, and you’ll find some of the best scattered around Palomino. This laid-back beachside town on the country’s Caribbean coast remains something of a hidden secret, with floury-white sand and swaying palms backed by the mountains of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta. Close by, Tayrona National Park boasts plenty more to lure, with howler monkeys swinging through the trees, and pristine beaches lapped by aqua-blue sea.

8.  Spy the legend of El Dorado at Guatavita lake

Guatavita lake (avianca/ProColombia)

Guatavita lake (avianca/ProColombia)

Once a ceremonial site for Colombia’s indigenous Muisca people, Lake Guatavita is famous for the legend of El Dorado, which said that when a new Muisca chief was appointed, he’d jump into the lake covered in gold dust, and throw in treasures as a sign of adoration for the gods. Drawn by the tales, the Spanish came on several expeditions, but they failed to find the fabled goods. Today guides are on hand to tell you more about its history, with sailing, water-skiing, and other activities also available on the lake, alongside plenty of artisanal craft shops to browse.

9.  See colonial history at Barichara

Barichara (avianca/ProColombia)

Barichara (avianca/ProColombia)

Beyond the nature, Colombia boasts plenty more to lure – not least its slew of colourful, well-preserved heritage towns. Especially unmissable is Barichara, where whitewashed, colonial-era buildings line historic cobbled streets, and restaurants, cafes and craft shops sit against an idyllic mountain backdrop. Amble over to the main square to see the elegant, 19 th -century cathedral, and head to the El Mirador viewpoint to admire the rolling hills of the surrounding Suarez Canyon.

10. Be in awe of the Tatacoa Desert

Tatacoa Desert (Shutterstock)

Tatacoa Desert (Shutterstock)

For a true wilderness experience, the Tatacoa Desert calls. Set in the southwest of the country, this vast, Mars-like expanse fuses copper-red rock formations, tumbling dunes and rippling ochre canyons across more than 127 square miles of land. You’ll find a slew of off-the-beaten-track adventures here – from hiking and biking to stargazing at the Tatacoa Observatory – but the real magic lies in the stillness and silence. This is Colombia at its most extraordinary, and a true jewel in the crown of this still-largely undiscovered ‘country of beauty’.

Simply amazing

I have traveled with Avianca before but I do have to say that this time they went above and beyond my expectations. I had purchased my mom a first class ticket so she could be more comfortable to my total surprise they upgraded me to first class as well because they had an empty seat and they said so I could keep an eye on my mom! I am grateful and thankful for such great gesture

The app-website does not work/Cust service provides no assistance

This is my third (and last) time flying with Avianca and let me tell you, all of my experiences have been extremely stressful. First of all, online check-in for international flights never works (idk if they do it on purpose to have you talk to them) and you always have to be earlier at the airport because of that (even the first time when I just had carry on luggage) second of all, last time I checked in with a live person he said that I needed to pay for my bag. I had paid for it when I purchased the ticket, very calmly I explained to him that I had paid for it already and showed him the receipt, he still said that I had to pay, only after requesting for his supervisor he confirmed the bag was paid and I was good to go (all this unnecessary issue took about 10 minutes). Now, today I’m trying to check in again and the app doesn't work!? Can’t believe they haven’t fixed this by now (it’s been around 4 years already) if this company really cares about customer service then focus first on fixing the very simple things, you need to understand people can’t be all day in front of a computer trying to complete a simple thing that’s checking in.

From an outstanding App to worst!!!

I started using this app in May 2019 on my iPhone and I loved it and enjoyed the airline and its professional employees. For some reason, starting this year Avianca has changed for the worse from customer service, and plane accommodation for less than 5 hours, and now the app has started acting up with problems logging in, failing to post my Lifemiles flights or it disappearing 2 weeks after my latest flight. Currently, I cannot log into the app because it's saying: "Sorry this device cannot be considered safe and you will not be able to use the application." This isn't making any sense because I never had a problem with it before plus I use a VPN and other protection from viruses etc. There's nothing on the site to address the problem and I'm not the only one. I'm not sure if they have anyone monitoring this app review. If they don't fix it, it will downgrade the outstanding past reviews it was known for great service and app. Please let's fix this problem.

Avianca is the flag carrier of Colombia and falls under a larger umbrella of Avianca Holdings, a company that owns many other regional subsidiaries within South and Central America.

Headquartered in Bogotá, this Star Alliance partner is an instrumental piece of the global connectivity Star Alliance offers. As the airline chiefly responsible for connecting Star Alliance passengers to Central and South America, Avianca fills an important role.

Avianca’s fleet consists primarily of narrow-body, single-aisle aircraft, though there are a few wide-body aircraft in its fleet. Avianca’s subsidiaries include Avianca Costa Rica, Avianca Ecuador, Avianca El Salvador, Avianca Guatemala, Avianca Honduras, Avianca Peru, and more. Its overall passenger fleet size is 143, and it flies to 76 destinations worldwide.

Let’s take a look at what portion of its fleet is dedicated to connecting the U.S. to Central and South America.

Update: Due to COVID-19, Avianca may temporarily suspend routes, frequencies, and/or aircraft flown. Please check with the airline directly for the most current information.

Although we mentioned that Avianca has its hub operations in Bogotá, Colombia (BOG), the airline also maintains a secondary hub at San Salvador (SAL) in El Salvador. As you’ll find out, there are tons of flights to San Salvador from the U.S.

Avianca operates a grand total of 5 aircraft on flights to/from the U.S.:

In the past, Avianca has offered lots of flights using the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, however, the flights offering the Dreamliner have since been shifted to meet the demands of flights elsewhere around the world. Let’s take a look at all of Avianca’s nonstop U.S. routes, along with the flight numbers, operating aircraft type, cabin classes available, and frequency.

Overall, there are tons of different flight options you can take to/from the U.S. However, most of these options will involve San Salvador (SAL) or Bogotá (BOG). Still, there are some unique flight options you can take outside of these 2 cities, such as Managua (MGA) in Nicaragua, Medellín (MDE) in Colombia, and even Guatemala City (GUA) in Guatemala.

As mentioned, Avianca is a Star Alliance partner, which naturally means that you can redeem miles from Star Alliance airlines for flights on Avianca and all of its subsidiaries. LifeMiles employs a variable award pricing structure when you fly on Avianca, which means that you can redeem LifeMiles for a cheaper price, if available.

You can also book Avianca flights using any transferable rewards program. Here are the main transferable currencies, along with the most popular and applicable mileage partners:

  • Chase Ultimate Rewards : Singapore KrisFlyer or United MileagePlus
  • American Express Membership Rewards : Air Canada Aeroplan, ANA Mileage Club, Avianca LifeMiles, and Singapore KrisFlyer
  • Citi ThankYou Rewards : Avianca LifeMiles, EVA Air Infinity MileageLands, Singapore KrisFlyer, Thai Airways Royal Orchid Plus, and Turkish Airlines Miles&Smiles
  • Capital One Miles : Air Canada Aeroplan, Avianca LifeMiles, EVA Air Infinity MileageLands, and Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer

As you can see, the redemption costs across all the major airlines vary dramatically. This is thanks to a variation in regional categorization , where 1 frequent flyer program may consider a certain country to be in a different region as another frequent flyer program.

Unfortunately, Avianca doesn’t currently offer a first class product aboard its flights.

Avianca Business Class Options

Avianca’s business class is one of the best ways to fly to South or Central America. It remains one of the top ways to reliably get award availability without trying to sweat over the scarce availability on LATAM or American Airlines.

Instead, Avianca releases lots of business class award seats, and its product is comfortable enough for a long-haul flight. Avianca is surprisingly well-equipped with its soft product. You’ll receive a Tumi amenity kit, tasty food and drink programs, and a comfortable seat. Let’s get into the business class options to/from the U.S.

Avianca 787-8 business class

Avianca’s best business class seat is aboard the 787-8. Known as the flagship within the fleet, this aircraft is deployed on Avianca’s most premium long-haul routes. Unfortunately, this doesn’t usually include U.S. routes, which are easily serviced by lower-capacity aircraft.

If you have a chance to fly this aircraft, you’ll find reverse herringbone seats in a 1-2-1 configuration — notice that all of these seats become lie-flat, have direct aisle access, and a lot of privacy.

In this cabin, you’ll find a total of 7 rows of business class seats, each with 21 inches of width and 72 inches of seat pitch. It’s arranged with 5 rows of business class in the front cabin and another 2 rows of business class seats in the mini-cabin, which is separated from the larger business class cabin by an in-flight bar.

Here’s what the seat map looks like:

Avianca 787-8 business class seat map

The most private seats will be near the rear of the plane, away from the 2 lavatories and galleys at the front of the aircraft. We’d recommend choosing 6A or 6K for solo travelers due to the absence of foot traffic near your seat. For couples traveling together, you can choose either 6D/6E or 7D/7E to maximize your privacy and seclusion from the rest of the business class cabin.

You’ll want to avoid 5A and 5K in general because these seats are missing 1 window and are directly next to the in-flight bar.

Here are the U.S. routes on which Avianca’s 787-8 can sometimes be found:

  • New York City (JFK) – Medellín (MDE)

Hot Tip: Check out one of our writers’ less-than-excellent experience on an Avianca 787-8 Dreamliner from Miami to Bogotá .

Avianca A330 200 business

Avianca has 2 variants of the A330-200. Unfortunately, the lesser variant is flown on routes to/from the U.S. The other variant features fully lie-flat business class reverse herringbone seats in a 1-2-1 configuration with direct aisle access, which is an excellent business class product.

On U.S. flights, however, Avianca has opted to offer angled-flat seats in a 2-2-2 configuration, which is a significant downgrade both in terms of comfort and privacy. This is Avianca’s sole wide-body plane operated to/from the U.S.

There are 5 rows of business class seats aboard the A330-200 angled-flat variant with 6 seats in each row arranged in a 2-2-2 configuration. These 30 seats are separated into 2 sections: 1 in the front with 3 rows and 1 in the back with 2 rows. The 2 sections are separated by a set of lavatories and galleys, plus an exit row.

Each of these seats is 21 inches wide and 65 inches in pitch. These angled-flat seats don’t have direct aisle access at window seats (A and K).

See below for the business class seat map:

Avianca A330 200 business class seat map

The Avianca A330-200 is currently being flown on these nonstop routes to/from the U.S.:

  • Los Angeles (LAX) – Bogotá (BOG)
  • Miami (MIA) – Bogotá (BOG)
  • New York City (JFK) – Bogotá (BOG)

Bottom Line: For flights to/from the U.S., the closest we can currently get to a true Avianca business class product is to fly on the A330-200’s angled-flat seats. This is only because the Dreamliner (which has reverse herringbone seats in a 1-2-1 configuration) has been pulled from all of the U.S.’s nonstop routes.

Avianca A319 business class

Besides the sole wide-body plane that Avianca flies to the U.S., there are 3 aircraft that are used on the remaining routes: the A319, A320, and A321. These planes are single-aisle , and the business class seats are the same throughout.

The seats are recliner seats that resemble those found in domestic U.S. first class flights. On all of these aircraft, the business class section consists of 3 rows of seats in a 2-2 configuration. Each of these seats is 18-21 inches wide and 40 inches in pitch. Simply put, these seats recline slightly more than ordinary economy seats, and the cushions are slightly thicker.

Avianca A319 business class seat map

Here are all the nonstop routes on which the A319, A320, or A321 is operated:

  • Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) – San Salvador (SAL)
  • Fort Lauderdale (FLL) – Bogotá (BOG)
  • Los Angeles (LAX) – Guatemala City (GUA)
  • Los Angeles (LAX) – San Salvador (SAL)
  • Miami (MIA) – Barranquilla (BAQ)
  • Miami (MIA) – Cali (CLO)
  • Miami (MIA) – Managua (MGA)
  • Miami (MIA) – Medellín (MDE)
  • New York City (JFK) – Medellín (MDE) sometimes
  • New York City (JFK) – San Salvador (SAL)
  • Orlando (MCO) – San Salvador (SAL)
  • San Francisco (SFO) – San Salvador (SAL)
  • Washington, D.C. (IAD) – Bogotá (BOG)
  • Washington, D.C. (IAD) – San Salvador (SAL)

Unfortunately, Avianca doesn’t currently offer a premium economy class product aboard its flights.

Avianca Economy Class Options

If you’re looking for cheap airfare to South America or Central America, you’ll find that Avianca is almost always the cheapest airline . Sometimes, these cheap tickets involve an “inconvenient” layover in San Salvador (SAL) before heading to your final destination in South America. However, if you’re price sensitive, it makes sense to save several hundred dollars by flying on a 1-stop itinerary.

Avianca’s economy class product is a relatively no-frills product. It is intended to get you from point A to point B as cheaply as possible, which is why the ticket prices beat the competition. Still, though, Avianca is considered to be a full-service airline, so you’ll be able to enjoy some comforts, such as inflight entertainment and a meal.

Let’s take a look at the best economy options you can take to/from the U.S.:

Avianca A330 200 economy

In general, the experience on wide-body aircraft tends to be better than narrow-body aircraft. This is due to the installation of inflight entertainment, the amenities aboard the aircraft, and even the ability to enjoy a full meal service .

The obvious drawback is that widebody aircraft have more seats, so there will be more people on the plane with you. Still, it’s easy to relax on the A330-200 from Avianca. There are a total of 222 economy seats in a 2-4-2 configuration tapering to 2-3-2 at the rear of the plane. Each of these seats is around 17-19 inches wide and 31-32 inches in pitch.

The best part of the 2-4-2 configuration is that couples traveling together can have a whole row to themselves .

Here’s what the A330-200 seat map looks like:

Avianca A330 200 economy class seat map

The best seats for solo travelers are 7C and 7J, which give extra legroom and are near the front of the plane. If you’re traveling with a companion, you’ll do well to reserve seat pairs 7A/7C, 7J/7K, 23A/C, 22J/K, and even 2 of the seats in row 22. All of these seats have extra legroom, which is a massive benefit for economy flights.

Here are the routes on which the A330-200 can be found:

avianca a321

Avianca’s A321 economy class consists of 182 economy seats in a 3-3 configuration. Each of these seats is 17-18.5 inches wide and 31-32 inches in pitch.

Here’s the seat map:

Avianca A321 economy class seat map

The best seats for solo travelers are 14A and 14K. There’s no seat in front of you, which means there’s a nearly infinite amount of legroom . For couples, the best seats are 12B/C, 12D/E, 27B/C, and 27D/E.

Here are the routes on which the A321 is operated to/from the U.S.:

  • Orlando (MCO) – Bogotá (BOG)

A sister aircraft, the A320, has 138 economy seats. Each of these seats runs around 18 inches wide and 31-32 inches in seat pitch. The seats are arranged in a 3-3 fashion.

Here is the seat map:

Avianca A320 economy class seat map

You’ll want to avoid rows 7 and 12, as those have restricted legroom or restricted recline, respectively. Row 15 is the absolute best to pick , and any of the 6 seats in that row will do.

Here are the nonstop routes to/from the U.S. offering the A320 service:

  • Fort Lauderdale (FLL) – Bogotá (BOG)
  • Los Angeles (LAX) – San Salvador (SAL) on AV 521

The very last aircraft utilized happens to be the smallest aircraft discussed: the A319. This plane only has 108 seats in a 3-3 configuration. Each of the seats is 17.8 inches wide and 31-33 inches in pitch. Here’s how the seat map looks:

Avianca A319 economy class seat map

The seats to avoid are in rows 7, 11, and 25 due to restricted legroom or restricted recline. The seats to reserve are row 12 seats, due to the exit row legroom.

Here are the routes on which the A319 service is offered:

  • Los Angeles (LAX) – San Salvador (SAL) on AV 523

Avianca 787-8 economy

The very last economy seat is Avianca’s 787-8. The reason why it’s ranked so low is that the seats are generally the most cramped, narrow, and crowded.

Avianca’s 787-8 has 222 economy seats arranged in a 3-3-3 configuration shown here:

Avianca 787-8 business class seat map

The seats are each 17 inches wide and 31-36 inches in pitch, depending on which seats you reserve.

If possible, we’d recommend you reserve seats in row 8, due to the extra legroom from the bulkhead. You should avoid rows 21, 22, 24, 33, and 35 when possible, due to the proximity to the lavatories.

Here are the U.S. routes on which Avianca offers the 787-8:

As you can see, Avianca’s fleet isn’t necessarily anything to write home about. In the past, Avianca operated Dreamliner flights with a true business class product on various routes around the world, but it’s pretty rare on U.S. routes nowadays.

You might find them on flights from New York City (JFK) to Medellín (MDE) sometimes. Other than that, the other available business class product that isn’t just a recliner seat is the A330-200 with angled-flat 2-2-2 seats.

The other aircraft offerings are similar to domestic flights with recliner seats, so there’s not much to get excited about.

In addition to expected flights to San Salvador (SAL) and Bogotá (BOG), there are tons of unique options to far-flung places, such as Barranquilla (BAQ), Guatemala City (GUA), and even Managua (MAG). You’re definitely going to want to add this guide to your trip planning portfolio when contemplating flying Avianca to Central and South America.

High Highs and Low Lows: Avianca's A320 Business Class From NYC to Medellín

JT Genter

Update: Some offers mentioned below are no longer available. View the current offers here .

When a great deal on a business-class ticket pops up — especially on airlines I haven't tried before — it's hard for me to resist booking it. Although I'd flown at least 55 airlines up to this point, Colombian flag carrier Avianca wasn't one of them. So, I jumped on the opportunity to book a NYC-Colombia mini-tour flying business class on Avianca's Airbus aircraft in ascending numerical order: A319 (JFK-MDE), A320 (MDE-CTG), A321 (CTG-BOG) and A330 (BOG-JFK). How's that for AvGeekery? Anyway, here's what it was like flying a subbed-in Avianca A320 from New York's Kennedy (JFK) to Medellín, Colombia (MDE).

The TPG team enjoys cheap flights just as much as anyone else, so when any of us searches for and writes about a flight deal , there's often an internal debate of whether or not to book. So, when I wrote about this great Avianca deal back in December, I went for it and booked a flight to Colombia.

Unfortunately, this deal didn't price out on Avianca's website. So, I wasn't able to earn 5x Membership Rewards points by booking directly with the airline using my Platinum Card® from American Express. Instead I booked my $698 round-trip flight through Expedia using my Citi Prestige. Not only did I earn 3x ThankYou Points (a total of 2,094) for the booking, but I'd also be reimbursed up to $500 of expenses for a delay of just three hours .

At check-in, I realized I hadn't added a frequent flyer account to my reservation. So, I quickly whipped out my Asiana Club Diamond account number and added it to the reservation, which earned me 7,304 miles from the trip. In retrospect, since I was flying business class and already had access to lounges, I didn't need my Star Alliance Gold status from the Asiana account. So, I should've credited the flights to another Star Alliance partner — like Lufthansa Group's Miles & More to get 200% credit instead of the 125% credit from Asiana.

Check-in and Lounge

Having checked-in online the night before and not needing to check any bags, I headed to the Avianca business-class check-in counter just looking for a physical printout of my boarding pass. After working with my reservation for a bit, I was handed three boarding passes — none of which were for this flight. Instead, I received the boarding passes for my return flights (MDE-CTG-BOG-JFK). It took me a bit to explain what was wrong in this situation before the check-in agent fully understood. But, a few minutes later, I was on my way with all four boarding passes for my trip.

avianca tours

Avianca participates in TSA PreCheck and my boarding pass reflected my PreCheck clearance. However, with the TSA PreCheck line looking long, I headed for the much shorter first/business-class security line. While I was able to keep my shoes on and head through the metal detector, this move didn't work out for me. My bag was pulled aside for additional screening — as were most bags.

The sole TSA agent manually checking bags didn't clear the bags in order, giving into passenger pleas to accelerate theirs. Finally, the TSA "lead officer" stepped in to accelerate the process. When he pulled my bag, he looked at the scan and apologized. He didn't see any reason that it was flagged 20 minutes prior. After a quick explosives test, he sent me on my way.

Avianca contracts with the Swiss lounge in JFK's Terminal 4. Having experienced other Swiss lounges, I had decently high expectations. With the appearance and amenities of a temporary lounge, I found it to be profoundly disappointing. For breakfast, there were a few warm pastry options in addition to a cold yogurt and fruit bar.

avianca tours

Self-serve drinks included soda, canned and bottled juices, three beer options and two wine options. A coffee machine offered espresso drinks, but the machine wasn't calibrated with the size of the mugs being used, leading to overflows.

avianca tours

Most of the seating options offered large comfortable chairs, which were surrounded by stains and discolored rugs. There were no power plugs in most of the lounge.

avianca tours

Instead, there were two short high-top counters offering a comical amount of power plugs per seat.

avianca tours

The lounge did include a nice quiet room with eight recliner chairs and good views of the gates. However, the bright room wasn't conducive to sleeping.

avianca tours

In short, don't bother getting to the airport early for the Swiss lounge; get to the airport early to give yourself ample time for the security screening.

There was an announcement in the lounge declaring that my flight was boarding, so I cut my lounge visit short and headed for the gate. As I left, the lounge agent called down to the gate to report that I was on my way. I'd arrive at the gate with just about 35 minutes until departure to find a "last call" for boarding.

avianca tours

At the gate counter, an agent fussed at me for arriving at the gate so late. Then, after checking the computer, she requested all of the boarding passes I'd received that day. It seems the computer flagged that my BOG-JFK boarding pass had been issued, and that was an issue. "For immigration purposes," I wasn't allowed to have that boarding pass yet. So, she ripped it up.

Then, I boarded the flight to find my seat (1A) had been already given away. When I pointed to my boarding pass, the flight attendant pointed to the couple occupying the seats and replied "they travel together." Looking at the out-of-place passenger's boarding pass, I was pointed to another occupied seat. After the shuffle, I ended up in another window seat (2K).

Cabin and Seat

When I booked this flight, the aircraft was originally scheduled to be operated by an Airbus A319. It wasn't until I boarded and saw what I originally thought was an out-of-place A320 safety card. So, I checked the tail number to find that this was indeed an Airbus A320. Still, my A320 was the smallest in T4's departure crowd.

avianca tours

The business-class cabin consists of 12 plush recliners arranged in a 2-2 configuration. Each offers 40 inches of pitch and measures 22 inches between armrests, providing plenty of width. There's a curtain in the rear of the cabin to separate the cabins. Note: due to my "late" boarding on the review flight, this is a photo of another Avianca A320. The photo below doesn't reflect the amenities stocked on the JFK-MDE flight.

avianca tours

Despite the generous amount of pitch at each seat, the overall bulk of the seat's padding and ample recline can make your area feel tight if the person in front of you reclines fully. Overall, the seats were quite comfortable though — most passengers in the business-class cabin were lulled to sleep shortly after takeoff.

Below the in-flight entertainment screen is a large literature pouch, and each seat has an adjustable footrest. However, one downside of these seats is the lack of under-seat storage. I couldn't even store my small backpack fully under the seat in front of me.

avianca tours

The bi-fold tray table was wisely designed with a support on the far armrest. While my tray table would naturally hover over this support, it would remain in place when something of weight — such as a food tray or my laptop — was on top of it. The table measured 21 inches wide by up to 10.5 inches deep and could be shifted forward or back.

avianca tours

Two universal power plugs were located below knee height between the two seats. These provided enough power for my phone to "rapidly charge." There was also a USB plug built into the IFE screen.

Food and Beverage

The menu that was handed out on this flight wasn't just for this flight, but rather included all of Avianca's long-haul flights. Passengers were instructed to go to page seven for the breakfast on this flight — the options were the same as the carrier's flights between JFK and Bogota (BOG) and Cartagena (CTG).

avianca tours

For breakfast, I chose the chicken and cheese burrito. The small but tasty burrito was served with a fresh fruit plate and choice of bread. I chose to have coffee with my meal — a choice that surprised the flight attendant. Powdered creamer was offered when I asked for some milk.

avianca tours

Later in the flight, I inquired if there were any snacks available. It seems there weren't, as I was rudely told that a snack would be served later. About 30 minutes later, a small warm chicken and cheese sandwich was served, accompanied not-so-elegantly by a bag of mini-pretzels.

avianca tours

Amenities and In-Flight Entertainment

Each non-bulkhead seat has a 11 inch in-flight entertainment screen built into the seatback in front. Entertainment options can be accessed via the touchscreen or a remote built into the center armrest of the seat.

avianca tours

While the screen tilts, it doesn't do so enough to counter the seat's recline. That means you're going to have to recline as well to get a good view of the screen.

avianca tours

Three-prong headphones were available at each seat at boarding. While they didn't look or feel very impressive, the headphones provided a solid amount of sound and featured active noise-cancellation.

avianca tours

The in-flight entertainment system was loaded with an impressive amount of content. I counted an impressive 109 movies, including "new releases" and "classics" — which were primarily popular movies from the last decade. Despite practically living on airplanes, I was able to find multiple movies I wanted to watch. Movies began with 2.5 minutes of advertisements and TV shows began with a minute of ads.

avianca tours

However, even the impressive IFE system had a downside: any time the crew would make an announcement, the sound would be deafeningly loud. The first announcement seemed to shock many passengers. After a few announcements, we learned to defensively rip the headphones off our ears when an announcement began.

At boarding, each seat was stocked with a plastic-wrapped red blanket, large pillow and headphones. With the boarding door still open, the flight attendants handed out plastic-wrapped Tumi amenity kits.

avianca tours

Inside the amenity kit were: headphone covers, socks, an eyemask, tissues, chapstick, a microfiber cleaning cloth, a mini-pen, lotion, earplugs, toothbrush and toothpaste.

avianca tours

Avianca provided a mixed bag, service-wise. The check-in agent was friendly but had problems issuing the right boarding pass, and the gate agents were about as bad as they could've been. Once onboard, there was even a dichotomy between the two flight attendants I encountered.

I was seated in the window, and since my neighbor was asleep (and fully reclined) for most of the flight, it was impossible for me to get out without waking her. Thus, I used the flight attendant call button three times during the flight. Each time, a FA arrived within 20 seconds. I received a drink promptly from the friendly FA in two of the calls. But, I was told to wait for a snack by the unfriendly one in a third call.

Overall Impression

Before pushback, this flight experience was " on an impressive pace to win worst flight of (at least) the year " between a check-in agent who gave me the wrong boarding passes, a poor lounge experience, excessively early last call, grumpy gate agents and my assigned seat having been given away with no apology. However, the flight was mostly good from there. With the exception of a grumpy flight attendant and a few minor annoyances, this flight exceeded my expectations for a mid-range flight on a narrow-body aircraft.

I'm left with mixed feelings about this flight. The red flags I mentioned throughout this review leave me unable to recommend the flight — however, it's the only nonstop from the New York City area to Medellín and features a solid on-board product, so it's hard to give this flight an F. Let's call it a C+.
