What to see in Cusco

Glimpse into the glorious past of the Inca Empire by visiting some of the most revered archaeological sites in Cusco. The stories behind these fascinating sites will come alive and offer a tantalizing glimpse of what’s still to come - Machu Picchu.

Massive stone walls at Sacsayhuamán, an important Inca fortress situated above the city of Cusco.

  • Sacsayhuaman

Sacsayhuaman was the largest stone structure that the Inca Empire constructed. Built over 500 years ago it still stands tall today and houses the famous Inti Raymi festival every year in June. The stone boulders show the Inca style of architecture with blocks expertly cut and placed without the use of mortar.

Visitors at the Cristo Blanco, a large, white statue of Jesus overlooking the city of Cusco.

Cristo Blanco

For a moment, you might think you're in Rio de Janeiro when you look at the Cristo Blanco statue of Jesus with his arms outstretched overlooking Cusco city. The White Christ is close to the Sacsayhuaman ruins and is a fantastic lookout point over Cusco city.

A tourist walking past the twelve-angled stone, one of the finest examples of Inca stonemasonry.

Twelve-Angled Stone

The Incas were famous for the way they shaped stones to perfectly fit within one another like a giant puzzle piece. The Twelve angled stone in Cusco city is a 12-sided rock piece that fits perfectly beside the neighboring stones.

Coricancha (the Inca temple of the sun) and the Santo Domingo Convent built on top of it.

The Temple of the Sun: Coricancha

Coricancha (Qorikancha) was a temple dedicated to the Incan sun god Inti and was once the most important temple of the Inca Empire. Builtin the 1400s, this temple is now an example of how the Spanish repurposed Incan architecture for their own purposes.

The Plaza de Armas (main square) of Cusco, surrounded by colonial-era buildings.

The Cusco Main Square

The Cusco Plaza de Armas or Cusco main plaza is a lively gathering place in the heart of Cusco. Here you’ll find the Fountain of Pachacuti, the Cusco Cathedral, storefronts, restaurants, and even McDonalds!

A narrow alley leading past a historical house in San Blas, Cusco's artisan district.

The San Blas Neighborhood

San Blas is the artisan quarter of Cusco city and is only a short walk from Cusco’s main plaza. This neighborhood dates back to the Inca empire and boasts some of the best views of Cusco. Rest at the Plazoleta de San Blas where you’re likely to spot artisans selling their handcrafts.

The multicolored stripes of Vinicunca Rainbow Mountain, located a few hours from Cusco.

The Seven Colored Mountain or Rainbow Mountain is a challenging high-altitude trek that rewards you with views that have made this trek Instagram famous. Colorful minerals in the soil stripe the mountain range in a natural rainbow of red, green, blue, and yellow.

Rooftops scattered throughout a field overlooked by a snow-capped mountain in the Sacred Valley.

The Sacred Valley of the Incas

The Sacred Valley is a lush valley surrounded by the Andes mountains. Incan ruins and off-the-beaten-path adventures await! Top Sacred Valley sights include the Maras salt mines, the Moray concentric circles, the Ollantaytambo ruins, and the luxury hotel properties nestled in serene landscapes.

Various types of potatoes for sale at the San Pedro Market, the largest in Cusco.

San Pedro Market

The bustling San Pedro Market is where you can go to find oddities like love potions, flavorful fruits from all over Peru, Andean textiles and alpaca sweaters. Bring the local currency, the Peruvian Sol, along with you here, bargaining is allowed.

Rock formations and Inca stone walls with a forest backdrop at the Q'enqo archaeological site.

Qenqo comes from the Quecha word for “zig-zag” and is one of the largest Incan temples. Located near the Sacsayhuamán ruins, this Inca ruin is an impressive example of the Incas ability to carve stone though its purpose is still a mystery.

The stone walls of Puka Pukara, an Inca ruin surrounded by grassy fields and rugged hills.

  • Puka Pukara

The archaeological ruins of Puka Pukara are close to Tambomachay so these two iconic sites are often paired together on a Cusco City tour. Like most Inca ruins, the purpose of this site is debated, though it is believed to have housed soldiers when the Inca was visiting the baths of Tambomachay.

Visitors on a walkway at the impressive Inca archaeological site of Tambomachay.

  • Tambomachay

At Tambomachay, terraces take a different spin than the agricultural ones you’ll see in different locations through the Inca Empire. Here they feed water into different pools making archaeologists suspect that this was a type of Inca spa.

Itinerary City tour in Cusco economic 5 hours

Our transfer will visit you at your hotel to take you to the starting point of your tour. We offer 2 shifts: the morning shift starts around 08:30 AM and ends at 2:00 PM, and the afternoon shift starts around 1:00 PM and ends at 6:30 PM.

The tour begins at Cusco Cathedral , decorated with intricate woodwork and impressive altars and beautiful paintings created by local artists of the Cusco School, which conceal hidden elements of indigenous thought.

Next, we'll take a short walk through the streets of the historic center towards Qoricancha , or the Temple of the Sun. According to the chronicles, entering this site required fasting and going barefoot, as it was considered an indigenous sanctuary dedicated to the deities of the Sun, Moon, Stars, Rainbow, Thunder, and Lightning. Here, you will appreciate the exquisite lithic technology crafted by the Incas, with intricate stone-cutting that remains stable to this day despite earthquakes.

After visiting Qoricancha, we'll board transportation to Sacsayhuaman, located 3 km from the city of Cusco. The esplanade of Sacsayhuaman offers a panoramic view of the city of Cusco. Sacsayhuaman was built with large blocks of limestone weighing between 25 to 130 tons. Comprising three terraces stacked in a zigzag pattern, this site served as a gathering place for festivals like WARACHIKUY and INTI RAYMI due to its vastness.

We will also visit Qenqo , which means "labyrinth" in Quechua. Located one kilometer from Sacsayhuaman, it showcases limestone rock structures sculpted over 500 meters, accompanied by formations that historians believe were used for astronomical, religious, embalming, and mummification purposes.

Next, we'll explore Puka Pukara , derived from the Quechua words "Puka" (red) and "Pukara" (fortress). Translating to "red fortress," this was a strategic location for controlling and monitoring access to and from the Imperial City of Cusco. It served as a territorial border to demarcate regions and establish travel regulations.

As the final destination of this tour, we will visit Tambomachay , a resting place located 9 km from the city of Cusco. It's known as the "Inca Baths" due to its water sources or the "Waters of Eternal Youth" due to its constant flowing waters. Finally, we conclude our City Tour by transporting you back to your respective hotel in Cusco.

What's it like

Detailed itinerary, cusco | cathedral - qoricancha - sacsayhuaman - q'enqo - puca pucara - tambomachay.

Highlight of the day: Learning all about the ancient Inca culture and observing their incredible craftsmanship.

Touch Down in Cusco City and Explore the Sites

We’ll pick you up from your accommodation to start the half-day city tour. The first stop is the Cusco Cathedral in the main square before we head on to Qoricancha. You’ll see some incredible artwork at the first and then astounding Inca constructions at the second.

After, it’s time to head out of the city center and visit four historically important Inca archaeological sites—Sacsayhuaman, Q’enqo, Puca Pucara, and Tambomachay. At each, you’ll learn something different about the incredible ancient culture. You’ll then be taken back to Cusco and dropped off at your accommodation for the evening.

Your exciting day out begins when we pick you up between 12:40 and 13:00 to begin the city tour. First off, we’ll visit the Cathedral in the Plaza de Armas—the main square of Cusco. Inside, you’ll enjoy a wide range of incredible paintings from Cusco’s School of Art—famous in all of South America—and gold leaf and embossed silver works.

Our next stop will be at Qoricancha, or Temple of the Sun, to appreciate its architecture and perfect stone constructions only seen in Inca temples of high importance.

We’ll then board our transport and head out of the city center to visit four highly significant Inca archaeological sites: Sacsayhuaman, Q’enqo, Puca Pucara, and Tambomachay.

At Sacsayhuaman, you’ll see the gigantic stones that have been perfectly carved. Q’enqo boasts areas of high religious importance. At Puca Pucara, you’ll observe an ancient military construction, part of Cusco’s ancient defense system. The final stop is dedicated to a water cult and has working fountains where water still runs to this day.

At the end of your city tour, we’ll take you back to your accommodation in the city at around 18:30. You’ll then have the evening free to spend as you please.

Below is a little more info about each site you’ll visit.

Qoricancha Sun Temple and Santo Domingo Convent

This hundreds of years old religious center was built to worship the sun, the most revered deity during the Inca Empire and what most of their culture was based around.

Inside the temple, you’ll find smaller temples dedicated to the sun, moon, stars, etc. To construct the site, the Incas used ashlar masonry, constructing upon the placement of similarly sized cuboid stones that they’d cut and shaped for this very purpose.

Outside the building are beautiful, regal gardens and fountains on the grounds of the monumental temple. You’ll find many pretty flowers as you walk along the paths. Here, the combination of the outstanding Inca architecture and the Spanish colonial architecture is what stands out the most.

Cusco’s Cathedral

Located in Cusco’s Main Square, the cathedral is a colonial monument of astounding artistic value. It was built on top of the Wiracocha Inca Palace and houses. Once inside, you’ll be able to observe works of carved wood such as the choir, pulpit and altars, beautiful paintings from the Cusquenian School of Art (including a Last Supper painting in which Christ and his disciples eat cuy—guinea pig!), and works of embossed silver and gold leaf.

Among all the 13 churches located in Cusco Historical Center, the Cathedral is one of the most important because it represents the mix of the Andean and colonial civilizations. The grand cathedral sits at the head of the Plaza de Armas—the historical and cultural heart of Cusco.

Sacsayhuaman

Located 2 km from Cusco center, this archeological site was built using enormous carved rocks joined with compelling precision—it’s almost unbelievable how they were able to engineer such incredible feats hundreds of years ago. From here, you can also enjoy a spectacular view of Cusco city along with the beautiful landscape formed by the surrounding mountains.

The site itself is composed of three overlapping platforms that stretch roughly 360 meters. In the construction, you can see stones as big as 9 meters tall. The most well-known part of Sacsayhuaman is its grand plaza and the adjacent three massive terrace walls. The stones used in the construction of these terraces are among the largest used in any building in pre-Hispanic America.

Another 1.5 km from Sacsayhuaman is Q’enqo. This archaeological complex was an Inca ceremonial cult center. The name may have derived after the small yet intricate network of underground passageways that make up the site. It’s fascinating making your way through them all.

The most prominent feature of this site is an open space called the amphitheater. Hundreds of years ago, you would have found Inca mummies in the 19 trapezoidal niches found here. Today, the amphitheater is only half of its original height.

Puca Pucara

This site is known as the red fortress due to the reddish tints resulting from the vast amounts of iron in its rocks. Many experts believe that this fortress was perhaps an old Tambo that served both as a resting and guarding spot to protect Tambomachay. Here you can see some excellent examples of architecture, fountains, aqueducts, and several Inca enclosures.

Tambomachay

The final complex on your tour is made up of a combination of finely carved stones, waterfalls, and aqueducts that were constructed to carry water coming from nearby springs. Tambomachay is associated with the water cult for this reason. In front of this construction, there’s a tower that’s believed to have served as a guarding post and communication tower.

Tips for our staff.

Tipping is the norm on any excursion in Peru. Although we pay good salaries to our entire team, something extra is always welcome.

Additional costs or delays beyond our control

Landslides, bad weather conditions, itinerary modifications due to a safety concern, illness, pandemia, government policy changes, political instability, strikes, act of God, etc.

We want to make your trip to Peru as memorable and as carefree as possible. In this section, you’ll find the answers to all the questions you have about traveling with Salkantay Trekking in one place. Please read the following information carefully – it will help you with any questions about our services.

Can I store my luggage at your office?

Of course! During the trip, your main luggage can be stored at our office (you can organize it with us on the briefing day or by email) or at your hotel, both free of charge.

Any equipment that you won’t need on the trek can be stored safely in your hotel. Nearly every hotel will provide this service. Don’t leave items of value with your bags; put them in the hotel safe and obtain an itemized receipt (in the unlikely case of theft, many insurance companies require that you have a copy of the receipt itemizing everything). It’s best to put items such as credit cards inside a sealed, signed envelope for extra peace of mind.

Pick up of guests

Please note:

  • All pickups are within Cusco City, but we recommend booking a hotel in the historic center for its convenient location.
  • Our guide or staff will confirm the pickup time the day before the tour.
  • Due to traffic conditions, the pickup time may vary between 30 and 45 minutes.
  • Cusco is an old city and has many narrow cobbled streets. Some hotels and Airbnbs are located on streets without car access or on long, steep slopes, making it difficult to transport luggage. For such reasons, we strongly advise you to book accommodation with good access.

Group Tours

Group tours are made up of different types of people, then physical conditions and ages can vary. By agreeing to be part of a group tour, you also accept that some people may be faster or slower than you. Therefore, each person can go at their own pace on the route.

It may be the case that a group wishes to modify the tour; however, the guide will be the one who decides, after consulting with all the participants, if such modifications are possible.

Strikes and demonstrations

Strikes and demonstrations are common in Peru, and this may interrupt some of our tours. Roads can be blocked, and train tracks can be taken over. However, we will try to keep your trip as originally planned, even if it means leaving the night before the scheduled date.

Under these circumstances, tours may also be canceled. In case of changes or cancellations, everything will be coordinated with you by our operations department. Your safety is our highest priority, and our decisions will be made to protect it.

Lost objects

Please pay attention to where you leave your things and remember to take everything once you leave our transport, tents or restaurants. You’re the only one responsible for your objects during the tour.

FULL ITINERARY

The half-day City tour in Cusco begins at 9:00 am. All of us will meet at the center of the Main Square (Plaza de Armas).

More than visit only the Cusco city itself, in this tour, you’ll have the option to visit Inca’s sites located in the upper part of Cusco.

The only place inside Cusco City will be  Qoricancha , this place is very well known as the  Temple of the Sun , in Inca’s time this place was the most important religious center of all the Tawantinsuyo ( original name of the Inca’s land ), this place shows one of the finest constructions of the Inca masonry;

Then the next place to visit is  Saqsayhuaman located in the upper part of Cusco where you’ll have a really nice view of Cusco city.

Also, here is the spot where you will be amazed by seeing the megalithic building made by the Incas, where they used gigantic boulders from 1 to 128 tons.

Continue our tour, we’ll arrive at Qenqo , another ceremonial place dedicated to the  Pachamama (Mother earth) , this is a big carved stone by the Incas.

They used this natural formation to make us imagine how hard was their work, then you’ll continue to Pukapukara a fortress and point to take control for all people who arrived in Cusco.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTION

1.- I am just one person, can I join some group tour?

Yes, you can, we have departures every day, feel free to decide when to go.

2.- We don’t like to go in a big group, can we arrange a private tour?

Yes you can, our group tours go with 10 or 15 people, but if you want, you can also arrange a private tour, we have different rates for it depending on how many people you are.

3.- I will travel with my family, we have two 65 YO people, do you think, can they make it?

We had people on this tour from 70 and 75 YO, the tour is not hard, but you have some small hikes into the Inca Sites where there are many steps to go up and down if you think they are not to fit to do it, we recommend taking a Private tour, that will be a perfect plan to do the tour quite easily and smoothly.

4.- How about my luggage, can I take all my stuff?, or where can I store it?

As this tour is only one day, we recommend taking only small backpacks, only for taking your personal stuff. The rest of your stuff you can be stored at your accommodation in Cusco, All the Hotels have storage if you book the night for your way back, you can leave your stuff there, another option is that you can leave your stuff in our office, in the two options you don’t need to pay anything extra.

5.- How about the altitude, are going to pass by other places higher than Cusco?

Cusco city is located in 3350 masl. (10990 Ft.) the only place higher than Cusco is Pucapucara 3680 masl. Then you will descend; we always recommend having at least one day in Cusco to acclimatize; altitude sickness is very different for everyone, sometimes you don’t have any problem.

Important information

1. getting to cusco.

All international passengers by plane must disembark in Lima and pass through Customs because the airport in Cusco is currently only for local flights. You must pick up your luggage in Lima and then check them back in, even if your trip from there to Cusco is on the same day and with the same airline.

The best way to go to Cusco is by plane, and there are many airlines to choose from. Although LAN generally offers the most options and flights, it is also the most expensive. Be prepared for flight delays or cancellations.

2. Altitude

People begin to worry about altitude sickness as soon as they reserve their trip to Peru, specifically Cusco. Because there is less oxygen in the air at high altitudes than there is at sea level, your body must work harder to get the oxygen it needs. Your body becomes accustomed to the lower oxygen content of the air over a period of days at a high altitude.

You could initially experience the illness or a hangover when suffering from altitude sickness. You can get headaches, exhaustion, a loss of appetite, nausea or vomiting, dizziness, difficulty sleeping, and difficulty breathing while exercising. Please get in touch with our office if any of these side effects worsen, and we’ll assist you find a doctor.

These symptoms will typically be slight. Always ease into action gradually to give your body time to acclimate. Drink a lot of liquids, such as coca tea or water. Since ancient times, coca tea has been used to help avoid altitude sickness.

The coca plant’s leaves contain alkaloids that assist your body absorb oxygen and ward off the effects of altitude sickness. A lot of alcohol and caffeine should be avoided.

They will make you urinate more frequently and dehydrate you. Don’t smoke. Your body has a harder time getting oxygen when you smoke. Don’t use sleeping medicines. Your body may have a harder time absorbing oxygen when you sleep as a result of their potential for shallow breathing at night.

To assist prevent altitude sickness, your doctor may recommend medications like acetazolamide and dexamethasone. Two days before you travel to a high altitude, begin taking the medication. While you are at a high altitude, keep taking it.

Of course, the weather is erratic. In Cusco, the dry season typically lasts from April through October, but be prepared because it can rain in June or get sunny in December.

Please make sure you have rain gear, including a waterproof jacket, pants, poncho, and waterproof gloves, no matter what month you are taking the journey.

Consider the four seasons as well. You should be prepared for all four seasons as many of the climbs over the Andes entail numerous microclimates.

Always wear layers since they make it simple to adapt to changing temperatures. Please be ready with a heavy, winter-weight jacket because evenings will always be chilly.

We did the 'Trekking Choquequirao To Machu Picchu 9D' trip with 10 people in the group. The entire experience from the pickup at the airport in Lima to being dropped back off was smooth and carefree thanks to the work and planning of Alain. He was available pre trip for questions and was a constant source of confidence and calm before and during the trip. He is knowledgeable about the culture and history, the plants and wildlife, as well as the present day lives of Peruvians. He clearly has a passion for sharing this information. The equipment provided was of good quality and perfect for the conditions. The food was excellent and there was plenty of it. The pacing of the trekking was well thought out and manageable. The horses and skilled horsemen bring the heavy things from camp to camp and setup it all up each day. Our group chose to acclimatize to the altitude for a couple days prior to beginning the trek and this worked well. Read more Written September 4, 2023

From the first pre-trek zoom call, I knew this was going to be a special trip. Alain’s love of his country and desire to share the rich history with others was evident in every detail. This is not a luxury trip, because it is back country and tough, but having a tent pitched for us and meals (delicious!) prepared three times a day meant we could focus on the trail and the beauty around us. I highly recommend this trek and this team! Read more Written September 4, 2023

There were a lot of fun memories from our trip to Peru; however, I will always treasure the insights, knowledge, and passion that Alain shared with us. Alain made this trip epic. • MissAthenaT 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Trip of a lifetime!! Alain was an amazing guide and host! He had every detail planned and he quickly assisted with any questions we had about our trip. His prices are great for the high level of service received. I highly recommend booking all of your excursions through his company Alternative Inca Trails! He planned a trip for our group of 17, which was amazing! I will be returning to bring family down to visit in a couple years and will be using Alain’s company again. Read more Written July 12, 2019
  • Kerry H 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Alternative Inca Trails arranged a custom, unique trip for my friends and I! Perfect! We were in Peru for 3 weeks and arranged all of our trip plans through Alternative Inca Trails. Our trip included both common and unusual destinations, from the common trek on the Inca Trail to a remote cultural experience in the Andes. Our guide, was born and raised in the Cusco region and spoke Quechua, Spanish and English. His experience and knowledge of the area is unparalleled and he shared his experience from his heart. When I requested that we get off the beaten path and away from common tourism, he delivered in a big way. This business is honest, fair and treats all with respect. Alternative Inca Trails will not only give you the trip of a lifetime, but they will invite you in as family and share the experience of a lifetime. Read more Written July 11, 2019
  • Amy M 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles History / Culture / Knowledge / Ceremony Alain (owner) took care of everything for us. His knowledge of Inca and current history gave an incredible depth to our experience. For our group of 16 women, it was so pleasant and effective to have women guides (along with a woman porter) to add a vital perspective to the explanations of culture and history, and to our interactions on the trail. Like Alain reminded us many times on our trek, it's important to have balance. Alain's, Gabriela's (guide), and Francine's (asst guide) dispositions were endearing, professional, and enriching -- thanks to all three of you for an incredible and heartwarming experience. • edcawthorn 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles "All in the Day of Trekking" What a gift to trek the Inca Trail. The sensual aspect of the trek, the emotional demand and the physical expectations are so personal. The guide is an inspiration, an educator and informant. My appreciation of Alain Machara Cruz exceeds the above in that his focus on safety is always monitoring the client and their well being--my recent guided tour of Inca Trail was a slow pace and it was quite reassuring to know the guide was looking out for safety. From briefing to goodbye the hike was flawless. Thanks! Read more Written June 2, 2019
  • Cathy C 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Alternative Inca Trails Alternative Inca Trails exceeded all expectations of what I expected with our guided hike. Alain, our guide and the owner of the business provided the best experiences along our 6 day/5 night hike to MP. He is very knowledgeable about the area, patient, easy going and provided encouragement along the way. We woke every morning with hot tea brought to our tent. All of our meals were exceptional and more food than we could eat. The cooks really outdid themselves in providing great food on the trail. The day would end with a basin of hot water waiting for us to wash up, tents set up and a hot meal. The muleteer was great and had a mule available to ride along the way if needed. Alain is a very warm and welcoming person who provides so many little details to the whole experience. Very well organized! Read more Written May 28, 2019
  • Diana N 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Read all of Alain’s reviews - he’s simply THE BEST! When my friend and I were in Peru several weeks ago, both of us for the 2nd time, we went on 3 tours she had booked online through Viator. We were unbelievably lucky to get Alain as our guide for the architectural sites near Cusco, including Sacsayhuaman. In spite of the fact that he is generally quiet and reserved, his passion and depth of knowledge for everything from his Incan/Quechuan heritage, the environment, respect for historical buildings, Peruvian culture, and many other subjects I’m sure, was evident. Reading other reviews about Alain shows me that we just tapped the surface of the wealth of knowledge that he has to share! Please contact him directly to book all things Peru. I trekked the Salkantay trail 5 years ago and hope to trek with Alain to Choquequirao in the next couple of years. I would not hesitate to trust him with all the details! • Sarah F 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Excellent tour of Sacred Valley sites with knowledgeable guide I visited Peru in the low season and booked a tour with Alain to see Machu Picchu, Ollantaytambo and Pisac. I arrived in Cusco without a solid plan, and he was very accommodating booking everything last minute for me. The 2 day tour was perfectly planned, because we arrived at MP in the afternoon when it was less crowded, and the rain had stopped, giving beautiful views of the site and the valley. His knowledge of the history of the Inca and the buildings was excellent, and I can't imagine going there without a guide like him, who can explain the significance of what you're seeing. I saw other people wandering around without a guide and felt bad they weren't hearing about the amazing things the Incas did to plan and build the site. You really get much more out of the experience with someone who is well versed in the history of the Incan empire, like Alain is. The next day we visited the two other sites with private transfers to both places, which was also perfectly timed to avoid the majority of the crowds, which makes the experience that much better, when you can take in the views in peace and quiet, without the mobs of people around (this is a definite perk of going in the low season). He also knows a lot about native plants and was explaining their medicinal and culinary uses, which I found really interesting. Alain was knowledgeable patient, and kind, planned a great 2 day itinerary on late notice, and his website is easy to use and helpful for those who may not be sure exactly what they want to do. It's not the cheapest service in town, but you are booking with a local guide who is genuinely happy to be showing you the sites, and his love of the area is infectious. I would highly recommend booking with Alternative Inca Trails. Read more Written January 24, 2018
