7 Days 6 Nights Kenya luxury Safari Tour

  • Christmas & New Year

7 Days 6 Nights Kenya luxury Safari

From tour planning, exchange of emails and calls to arrival, airport pickup, safari and last minute shopping, this was more than what we asked for! On our first day in Nairobi we had the opportunity to visit Dorothy Schwartz Community Centre, a slum school that is supported by Royal Private Safaris where we donated more than 200 Kgs of school supplies! On Safari, we camped in an exclusive game area, with a camp crew of twelve who laughed and sang all day… We were hosted in the finest style imaginable – hot showers, iced sun-downers, amazing meals and super-comfortable enormous tents. It hardly felt like camping. When we left, the crew broke camp and moved it to the next location. The bush was left exactly as it had been before! Thank you Royal Private Safaris, this was much more that what we had requested! -Brenna, Alaska.

6 Days Kenya Budget Tours (with FREE NIGHT at Nairobi Hotel)

Amazing Safari!!!!!!! Embarking on a six-day safari with Bon Voyage Safaris to the Serengeti and Maasai Mara National Park was an unparalleled adventure of a lifetime. From the moment we set foot in the vast plains of the Serengeti to the majestic landscapes of the Maasai Mara, every moment was filled with wonder and excitement. Our journey was expertly curated by Bon Voyage Safaris, ensuring a seamless and unforgettable experience from start to finish. Our knowledgeable guide navigated us through the wilderness with precision, offering insights into the rich ecosystem and abundant wildlife that call these parks home. Witnessing the Great Migration in the Serengeti was a sight to behold, as thousands of wildebeests and zebras thundered across the plains in search of greener pastures. The sheer magnitude of nature's spectacle left us in awe of the natural world's beauty and complexity. In the Maasai Mara, we were treated to thrilling encounters with the Big Five, including up-close sightings of lions, elephants, and leopards. Each game drive revealed new wonders, from picturesque sunsets painting the sky to elusive predators on the prowl. Throughout our safari, Bon Voyage Safaris ensured our comfort and safety, with luxurious accommodations and delectable cuisine served under the African sky. Our six days in the wilderness were a transformative journey into the heart of Africa's wild beauty, leaving us with cherished memories that will last a lifetime.

Your staff did an excellent job. We had a great time and I would recommend this trip for my friends.

Masai Mara Camping Safari Tour

Masai Mara Camping Safari

Our guide was great and interacted well with the group. He had lots of animal knowledge and found us some great animals. Our transport was a van but it made it there and back and wasn't too bad for game viewing. Plenty of space for the 6 of us. Accommodation is a basic tent with bed and mossie net but was all we really needed. Meals were good and there was always plenty. While the trip is advertised as 4 days, it's only 3. I would have enjoyed having an extra day to spend in the Mara.

5 Days Kenya medium range safari for Amboseli and Tsavo Parks from Nairobi to Mombasa

I would highly recommend CKC Tours. John responded to all our queries promptly and went back and forth until we had an itinerary we were happy with. We were then met by John at the airport and given all the documentation for our trip which included lodges at Masai Mara and Amboseli and internal flights. It was all very easy and well organised. I also found it to be very competitively priced considering the service we received and the standard of accommodation.

3 Days Masai Mara Safari (in a 4x4 JEEP with FREE NIGHT at Nairobi Hotel)

Our 10-day group joining safaris to Kenya and Tanzania gave us a great experience of a number of national parks. The tour consultant Mr. John and the driver were great. Some days involved a bit of driving but that was expected. We also made new friends and the most amazing memories. Would definitely recommend this joining safari tour to any age group.

Wild rhinos roaming Lake Nakuru National Park in Kenya

Spot endangered black and white rhino in Lake Nakuru National Park

While the park’s stunning Lake Nakuru isn’t a sight to scoff at, it’s Africa’s endangered rhino population that avid safari-goers long to see. If you’re lucky, you might spot one or two white rhinos stopping to drink at the water’s edge after a morning spent walking the arid landscape. But if you’re really lucky, you might spot an elusive black rhino – an animal that’s been critically endangered since 1996.

A lion basking in the sun surrounded by wild grass in the Masai Mara region

Explore the Masai Mara Game Reserve in search of lions and cheetahs

The Masai Mara Game Reserve promises a whole heap of unforgettable wildlife sightings, from a herd of elephants wandering across the landscape to gazelles staying wary of a predator’s watchful gaze. But the chance to catch sight of a black-maned lion as it basks in the African sun or see the spots of a cheetah as it prowls through the brush makes all of those early wake-up calls and late nights worth it.

A group of wildebeest jumping across a river in Kenya

Learn about the annual wildebeest migration across the Great Rift Valley

Your local leader’s not just there to keep you safe from the wild animals you see on your game drives but also to teach you about their mating rituals, eating patterns and migration habits. As you cross the Great Rift Valley, learn about the spectacular display of wildebeest migration that happens every year where one million wildebeest move towards greener pastures into the Masai Mara region.

A group of travellers on a boat cruising along Lake Naivasha

Cruise along Lake Naivasha for a chance to see thirsty hippos and birdlife

Take your wildlife adventure off land and onto water with a boat trip on Lake Naivasha, the highest lake in Kenya’s Great Rift Valley. Cruise the lake’s surface in search of thirsty, thirsty hippos in need of rehydration at the water’s edge and get your camera out to take photos of the magnificent birdlife in this part of the world – think African fish eagles, saddle-billed storks and lesser flamingoes.

When's the best time to go on a safari in Kenya?

Generally speaking, January, February and June to October are the best times to go on safari in Africa. This is the dry season, so animals tend to come out into more open spaces in search of water, making them easier to spot. However, you’ll be able to spot animals year-round and enjoy fewer crowds if you travel outside peak season.

Read more about the best time to go on safari .

Am I guaranteed to see animals?

We can’t guarantee you’ll spot the Big 5, but you’d have to be seriously unlucky to see no animals at all. On our safaris, you’ll explore some of the best game parks and national reserves in the world. These protected areas are filled with a huge variety of species and your expert driver and local leader will be on hand to point you in the right direction (literally).

What are the "Big Five"?

The “Big 5” used to refer to the five big game animals that were the most difficult to hunt. Now that most shooting is done on a camera, the Big 5 are the most exciting animals to spot while on safari: the lion, leopard, rhinoceros, elephant, and Cape buffalo.

What should I pack for a safari in Kenya?

Loose, light layers in neutral colors are the best attire for a safari (dark colors will get hot in the sun and can attract the Tsetse fly). You’ll also want a sun hat, some good walking shoes, a camera, sunscreen and bug spray. For more details, check out our  ultimate Africa packing guide .

What type of food will be served on a safari in Kenya?

It depends on the trip style you've chosen. On our Basix trips, you’ll have a cook traveling with you who'll whip up a variety of local and Western-style dishes. Along your route, your cook will stop to purchase fresh, locally sourced food for your meals. You can expect a variety of things for breakfast like fruit, eggs, toast and cereal; lunch is often sandwiches and salads; and dinner is usually a hearty meal like pasta, curry or a BBQ.

On our Original and Comfort trips there'll be more meals at camps and lodges along the way. One thing's for sure: you definitely won't be going hungry on safari!

What are the toilets and showers like on safari?

Most of the permanent tented camps will have private bathrooms with flushing toilets and showers with warm water.

Many of the campsites we stay at have communal facilities with flushing toilets and showers with warm water. However, in some of the more remote areas, there may only be basic facilities (toilets and cold running water).

Will I be able to use my cell phone on safari?

Some of our hotels and campsites will have Wi-Fi, however, internet and phone access may be limited in more remote areas. But you won’t think twice about emails and social media when you’re watching a pride of lions prowl through long grass or enjoying a drink around the campfire with your group.

Are Intrepid's Kenya safaris accessible for travelers with disabilities?

We are committed to making travel accessible to everyone, so we will work with you to assess whether you will be able to complete an existing itinerary, or whether we will be able to make reasonable adjustments to meet your needs before you book. Please see our  accessible travel page  for more information.

AndBeyond Kichwa Tembo Tented Camp

Kenya is located in East Africa and encompasses classic savannah, mountain highlands, colourful tribal cultures, freshwater lakes and pristine coral reefs. The Masai Mara is world renowned for the “ Great Mammal Migration ” and sightings of the famous “Big Five” (elephant, lion, leopard, buffalo, rhino). The soda lake known as Lake Nakuru lights up with pink flamingos, whilst the Amboseli National Park offers sanctuary to an abundance of wildlife and birdlife. Kenya is home to Africas second highest mountain, whilst the Tsavo and Samburu game reserves offer rewarding safari experiences. Kenya boasts unforgettable bush and beach vacations with destinations such as Diani Beach providing the perfect setting for some well-deserved relaxation.

Kenya is a year-round destination for both safari and beach holidays.

The main tourist seasons tie in with the rainfall patterns: the biggest influxes of visitors are in December – January and July – August .

Dry-season travel has a number of advantages, not least of which is the greater visibility of wildlife as animals are concentrated along the diminishing watercourses. July to September is probably the best period, overall, for game-viewing, with early September almost certain to coincide with the annual wildebeest migration in the Maasai Mara.

October, November, and March are the months with the clearest seas for snorkeling and diving. In the long rains, the mountain parks are occasionally closed, as the muddy tracks are undrivable. But the rainy seasons shouldn’t deter travel unduly: the rains usually come only in short afternoon or evening cloudbursts, and the landscape is strikingly green and fresh even if the skies may be cloudy. There are bonuses, too: fewer other tourists, reduced prices and often perfect light for photography.

Renowned for its classic savanna safaris, Kenya is a beautiful country with deserts, alpine snows, forests, open plains, colorful tribal cultures, freshwater lakes and coral reefs. The wildlife safaris have always been the top attraction in Kenya. This huge wilderness is home to the most impressive wildlife spectacle on earth; The great migration. The great migration is a pilgrimage of millions of wildebeest and zebra in search of new pastures. The herds are followed by vast numbers of predators, including lions, hyenas and cheetahs. Other activities to be experienced in Kenya include trekking Mount Kenya, ballooning over the Masai Mara and snorkeling in Malindi on the Indian Ocean coast.

Masai Mara National Park

The Masai Mara National Reserve is one of the top tourist attractions in Kenya and the country’s most popular game park. Each year the Masai Mara National Reserve is visited by thousands of tourists who come here to watch the exceptional population of game and the annual migration of zebra and wildebeest. The “Great Migration” takes place every year from July to October when millions of wildebeest and zebra migrate from the Serengeti in Tanzania.

Amboseli National Park

Amboseli National Park is a relatively small park located close to the Tanzania border at the foot of Africa’s highest mountain, Mount Kilimanjaro. The park is famous for being the best place in Africa to get close to free-ranging elephants. Other wildlife includes giraffes, zebras, cheetahs and hundreds of bird species. ‘Must do’ attractions in the Amboseli National Park include meeting the Maasai people and witnessing the spectacular views of Mount Kilimanjaro.

Nairobi National Park

Nairobi National Park is just a short drive from the center of Nairobi with only a fence separating the park’s wildlife from the metropolis. It is the only national park in the world to be found within the precincts of a capital city. Nairobi’s skyscrapers can be seen from the park. Despite its proximity to the city and the relatively small size of the park, Nairobi National Park boasts a large and varied wildlife population including the endangered black rhino, lions, leopards, cheetahs, hyenas, buffaloes, giraffes and diverse birdlife with over 400 species recorded.

Malindi is a town on Malindi Bay, in southeastern Kenya. It sits amid a string of tropical beaches dotted with hotels and resorts.Malindi provides a very nice introduction to the coastal tourist attractions in Kenya with its extensive coral reefs and beautiful beaches. There are surfing, snorkeling, deep-sea fishing and other water sports. The Malindi Marine National Park and nearby Watamu Marine National Park have protected areas with beautiful beaches, clear water, turtles and very colorful fish. Arabuko-Sokoke Forest Reserve harbors elephants and more than 200 species of birds.

Mombasa is Kenya's main tourist destination. It is on the eastern coastline of Kenya, bordering the Indian Ocean which has made it a popular destination for its beaches. Mombasa is a place where both history and progress are greatly valued, where a busy harbor existence is lived at its own unique, tropical pace. Mombasa offers a diverse marine life, world-class hotels, and friendly atmosphere. There is a tropical climate all year and it is a great destination filled with activities for all ages.

Mount Kenya

Mount Kenya is the highest mountain in Kenya and the second-highest in Africa, after Kilimanjaro. The mountain is an awe-inspiring sight and is often referred to as the ‘Place of Light’. Its ragged series of peaks are crowned with snow, and its slopes are covered with forest. The 5199 meter (17,057 ft) high summit is a difficult technical climb, several lowers peaks, however, are an easy destination for any fit trekker. The majority of animals live lower down on the slopes of Mount Kenya. Here there is more vegetation and the climate is less extreme. Various species of monkeys, several antelopes, tree hyrax, porcupines and some larger animals such as elephant and buffalo all live in the forest.

Samburu National Reserve

Samburu National Reserve is a very peaceful national park in Rift Valley Province of Kenya. It attracts wildlife because of the Uaso Nyiro River that runs through it and the mixture of forest and grassland vegetation. All three big cats, lion, cheetah and leopard, can be found here, as well as elephants, buffalo and hippos. The Uaso Nyiro River contains large numbers of Nile crocodile. Samburu also offers a sublime birding experience.

Hell’s Gate National Park

Hell’s Gate National Park is a small park named after a narrow break in the cliffs, once a tributary of a prehistoric lake that fed early humans in the Rift Valley. It is unique among Kenya’s wildlife parks, as you are allowed to walk or cycle without a guide. There’s dramatic scenery, with steep cliffs, gorges and basalt columns. The national park is home to a wide variety of wildlife, though many are few in number. Examples of little-seen wildlife include lions, leopards, and cheetahs.

Lamu Island

Lamu Island is a part of Kenya’s Lamu Archipelago and has managed to stay unspoiled and untouched by the mass tourism that has hit much of Kenya’s coastline. As the oldest living town in Kenya, Lamu Town has retained all the charm and character built up over centuries. There are no roads on Lamu Island, just alleyways and footpaths, and therefore, there are few motorized vehicles on the island. Residents move about on foot or by boat, and donkeys are used to transport goods and materials.

Tsavo National Park

Tsavo is one of the oldest and largest national parks in Kenya and in the world. Due to its size, the park was divided into Tsavo West and Tsavo East. The Tsavo West has spectacular scenery with a rolling volcanic landscape while Tsavo East has more open savannah than its western sibling. Tsavo National Park is the ideal destination in Kenya for people who seek solitude and privacy as well as the chance to explore the wilderness. The park is home to most of the larger mammals, vast herds of dust-red elephant, Rhino, buffalo, lion, leopard, pods of hippo, crocodile, waterbucks, Lesser Kudu, gerenuk and the prolific bird life features 500 recorded species.

Lake Nakuru

Lake Nakuru is a very shallow lake in central Kenya. The lake’s abundance of algae attracts vast quantities of flamingos, sometimes more than one million at once. Often called the greatest bird spectacle on earth, the flamingos are one of Kenya’s top attractions. Visitors can enjoy the wide ecological diversity and varied habitats that range from Lake Nakuru itself to the surrounding escarpment and picturesque ridges. Lake Nakuru National Park is ideal for bird watching, hiking, and game drives.

Kenya Safari | Luxury, Lodges and Tours

Kenya safaris consistently rank in the top 3 destinations for safari-goers in Africa and it’s easy to see why. Home to prime game viewing, the incredible Masai Mara savannah, luxury lodges, stunning beaches and the famous Mount Kenya, this east Africa wonder packs a powerful punch.

Nearly 1.5 times the size of California at 224,000 sq miles, this incredible land neighbours five countries including Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda and with Somalia and Ethiopia to Kenya’s east and north.

The best time to visit Kenya is from July to September, during the country’s dry season, which also coincides with the Great Migration of wildebeest and zebra. The rainy seasons are also good times to travel, as there are fewer visitors and you can admire the striking emerald vegetation.

Best Parks & Reserves

Kenya has numerous parks, reserves and sanctuaries, all of which have their own charm, accommodation and wildlife attractions.

With 24 national parks, 15 national reserves, 6 marine parks, and private conservancies on top of that, the choice can be overwhelming when it comes to visiting Kenya’s national parks.

Of particular note amongst all of the incredible parks, Maasai Mara is widely regarded as being one of the best safaris in Kenya as well as Amboseli National Reserve and Tsavo National Park.

  • Masai Mara National Reserve — Kenya’s most famous park, known for having some of the highest concentrations of the big five in Africa, but it also witnesses the phenomenal Great Migration. Sharing a border with Serengeti National Park in Tanzania, Masai Mara safaris receive a massive seasonal wildebeest migration.
  • Amboseli National Park — Due to its proximity to Nairobi and the abundant wildlife, Amboseli is the second most famous national park in Kenya after Masaai Mara. The landscape ranging from semi-arid dry lake beds to wet swamps attracted a wide variety of animals. The highlight of the park are the elephant herds population, featured in many documentaries. The park connects tourists with the local Maasai people, whose villages you can visit via guided tours.
  • Tsavo East National Park — Occupying almost 8,700 square miles, Tsavo East is one of the largest national parks in Kenya in a semi-arid climate zone with big numbers of Tsavo Lions without any manes.
  • Tsavo West National Park – Covering an area of 3,500 square miles, Tsavo West National Park is more mountainous and wetter than its Tsavo East park counterpart with swamps, Lake Jipe and the Mzima Springs.
  • Aberdare National Park — Cool and cloudy Rift Valley park with lots of large game, and over 250 species of bird recorded.
  • Hell’s Gate National Park – A small National Park close to Nairobi, which allows you to get out of the car and offers some nice opportunities for rock climbing and some game
  • Lake Nakuru National Park — A stunning 400 species of bird have been recorded here including the largest flocks of Flamingos anywhere on earth
  • Lake Elementaita — One of the smaller lakes in the Great Rift Valley recently declared a UNESCO world heritage site. scenic and rich in bird life.
  • Nairobi National Park — Located in Nairobi and a great option to see large game for those on a tight schedule.
  • Meru National Park – a wide range of wild beasts like elephant, hippopotamus, lion, leopard, cheetah, black rhinoceros and some rare antelopes.
  • Sibiloi National Park – listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as a part of Lake Turkana National Parks.
  • Mount Elgon National Park – Home to over 300 species of birds, including the endangered Lammergeyer. The higher slopes are protected by national parks in Uganda and Kenya, creating an extensive trans-boundary conservation area which has been declared a UNESCO Man & Biosphere Reserve.
  • Lake Naivasha National Park The crater rim here provides great scenic views across the beautiful Rift Valley all the way to Lake Naivasha with big cats and major wildlife at Mount Longonot including buffaloes, elands, lion, leopard, bushbucks, common zebra, giraffes and Grant’s gazelles.

Other parks popular with visitors include the unique Saiwa Swamp NP and mesmerising Mwaluganje Elephant Sanctuary .

Safari tours

A safari tour package in Kenya is typically organized by a tour operator, safari tour company or via a self drive Africa safari trip.

Spread across the country including safaris and beach holidays to neighbouring Zanzibar, or indeed the stunning Seychelles , Kenya’s parks and reserves can take several hours/flight to one another.

It is therefore important to take many elements into account when visitors plan their Kenya tour including:

  • Which animals you would like to see
  • Budget for the trip
  • Travel party (solo, with friends or a larger family group)
  • Activities revolving around the best things to do in Kenya including the national parks, Kenya hot air balloon safaris and walking safaris

kenya best safari tours

Guided tour

A guided safari package brings the benefit of:

  • Transfer via plane/4×4 to the safari camps and lodges
  • Luxury lodge packages
  • Meals/drinks all catered for
  • Safari guides and transport
  • Facilities prepared including showers, wifi, cocktails and all requests
  • Combined trips to neighbouring Tanzania and beach trips
  • Tailored trips including chimp trekking tours

Self drive safari

For self-drive African safaris, visitors can hire their own 4×4, whilst accommodation can be secured in park campsites or in the vehicle itself if a campervan option is selected.

Part of the fun of a self drive safari is spotting the abundant wildlife on your own and taking the time to spend viewing your favourite animals.

A normal 2 wheel drive car may be sufficient, and of course cheaper, for some parks however other parks have deeper sand and a 4*4 will be required.

Best time to go to Kenya

Kenya is a beautiful country to visit, regardless of the season and popular with visitors from the U.S, Europe and South Africa.

Certain periods are more favorable for a safari in the best conditions. To know the best time to travel to Kenya , visitors should take into consideration the following key criteria:

  • Regions visited
  • Weather conditions

Overall, July to September is the best time to visit Kenya during the country’s dry season, which also coincides with the Great Migration of wildebeest and zebra.

Kenya safari cost

Kenya is a premier safari destination in Africa, thus incurring the more expensive costs associated with this.

There are multiple factors that can impact the Kenya safari prices including accommodation selected, trip duration, safari costs, tours, flights, transfers, meal options and additional activities visitors may request.

Travellers on a budget can reduce costs by booking their own flights, accommodation and activities as well as hiring a 4*4 to travel between the parks and reserves.

Organizing your safari

There are a number of different options available for organizing your safari in Kenya including:

Organizing your own safari is possible but only recommended for more experienced travelers and visitors on a strict budget. This option requires time and know-how to plan for all flights, transport, meals, accommodation and safari tours.

Without the knowledge of specific safari destinations and logistics in navigating an African country, this may be a challenging option for many travelers.

Tour operators

The biggest tour operators will offer safaris in Kenya where visitors can book a package that will cover their flight, transport, accommodation, activities and food, an ideal option for those with no previous safari experience in preparing for such a trip.

Safari travel agencies

Visitors will often find dedicated safari travel agencies to be the best option in booking their dream safari. These agencies have many years experience in booking safaris as well as multiple partnerships with local tourism networks and lodges/game reserves.

Travel agencies typically offer:

  • Tailor-made tours
  • Local tour guides
  • Trips to must-see wildlife areas and parks
  • All transportation
  • High quality accommodation at reduced prices

The cost of the service of these specialized agencies can be a bit higher compared to other options, a cost worth bearing given the quality and ease of services provided.

Accommodation

Visitors typically will have the choice between lodges, chalets and campsites as well as African tent camps, suites and bedrooms.

Luxurious facilities are common including swimming pools, restaurants, bars, spas and terraces. Game viewings and plane transfers are organized by the accommodation providers.

Trip preparation

International flights arrive via Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO) for visitors wondering how to get to Kenya . Most tourists will have to obtain a Kenya visa including citizens of the U.S, U.K, EU, India and Canada.

Kenyan entry visas are exclusively issued electronically, with passengers required to obtain their e-visas before departure. Visitors can apply for single entry and transit visas on the e-visas website .

Visitors can expect to wait approximately 1 to 3 days for the visa to be approved and processed, and receive their Kenya eVisa in their inbox. Once approved, travellers are permitted a 90-day stay in Kenya.

Your passport should be valid for a minimum period of 6 months from the date of entry into Kenya. Make sure you have two blank pages in your passport on arrival.

The CDC and WHO recommend the following vaccinations for Kenya: Covid-19, Hepatitis A, hepatitis B, typhoid, rabies, meningitis, polio, measles, mumps and rubella (MMR), Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis), chickenpox, shingles, pneumonia and influenza.

Yellow fever may be required if traveling from a yellow fever endemic country.

Malaria is prevalent in Kenya, particularly outside Nairobi. One of the highest risk areas is Mombasa which is where many travellers will find themselves at some time.

Malaria is transmitted by the bite of an infected mosquito and so the first line of defence is to protect yourself against mosquito bites. Malaria Prophylaxis may be prescribed to you during your consultation depending on your itinerary.

Check with a travel medicine specialist to see if antimalarials should be considered to help prevent malaria contraction. Visitors can find further information on Kenya vaccine details here .

At all ports of entry, visitors to Kenya who are above the age of 12 will be required to present documentation of either a COVID-19 vaccine or a negative COVID-19 PCR test performed no more than 72 hours prior to departure.

For further info on Kenya vaccine requirements , read our detailed and entry requirements.

Driving in Kenya

Driving is conducted on the left hand side of the road in Kenya and driving is generally considered to be safe.

Visitors driving through parks may require a 4×4, whilst carrying a map & GPS is recommended.

Visitors should consider travel insurance when planning their trip to help protect and cover the costs of hospitalization or repatriation if required.

Some credit cards may already include travel insurance. Online travel insurance comparators are also useful in finding suitable offers.

Visitors can expect to pay between $800 to $1,100 per person per day.

Why Kenya Is the Best Place for a Safari, According to a Seasoned Local Guide

Veteran tour guide Kitonyi "George" Kamonde describes what it’s like to work for one of the world’s leading safari companies.

kenya best safari tours

Ask almost anyone and they'll surely tell you that a majestic safari experience is at the top of their travel bucket list. From South Africa to Tanzania, the stunning images of seemingly endless green plains, towering giraffe, and the formidable "Big 5" (African leopard, African lion, Cape buffalo, African elephant, and rhinoceros) have captivated adventurers the world over. However, much like people, not all safari destinations are created equal. Each location offers something special that speaks to those fortunate enough to indulge in its wonder. This is true for Kenya where various spectacular landscapes, such as Amboseli, Lewa, and Masai Mara, are home to rarities like Grevy's zebra, black rhino, and African wild dog.

When he's not home in Kenya's sunny, bustling capital city of Nairobi, Kitonyi Kamonde — better known to adventure seeking travelers as George — is in the bush serving as an expert guide with one of the world's best safari outfitters, Micato Safari . For a decade, George and his warm smile have provided local insight into Kenya's wildlife to generations of safari goers in order to give them the experience of a lifetime. From recalling historic facts and seeking out rare animals to helping guests indulge in luxurious accommodations like Elewana's Kifaru House , George is the man you want by your side — whether you're on your first or your fiftieth safari.

Travel + Leisure caught up with the knowledgeable veteran to learn more about how he got started in the industry, his most memorable experience, and what mistakes he wishes first-timers would stop making on safari.

T+L: How did you get started as a safari guide?

Kitonyi "George" Kamonde : "I've always had a fascination with wildlife. I grew up on a small farm (what we call a shamba ) about two hours from Nairobi, very close to a national park. That exposed me to the wonders of the wild from an early age — and I joined Kenya Wildlife Clubs to learn everything I could about Kenya's magnificent wildlife and birdlife. Next, it was off to college where I graduated with a degree in Tourism & Wildlife Management.

I was a driver-guide for some years before becoming a safari director for Micato, where our training is always ongoing. The process of becoming a certified guide takes many years of study and, like every Micato safari director in Kenya, I earned the prestigious Silver-Level certification awarded by the Kenya Professional Safari Guides Association. I am very proud to have achieved the Silver Certification and, as part of my always ongoing learning about safari guiding, I am working towards my Gold level. Those exams are very difficult, but I am confident that I will be ready if I study hard enough."

What do you love most about being a guide?

"I love meeting guests who love the wild as much as I do, and eventually [becoming] friends. I'm excited each day about guiding and educating them about my country, people, history, culture, and traditions. And we must never forget that our guests are here for the wilderness and the animals. Whether it's a lion or dung beetle, they give us a different show to narrate every time. I also love working with my fellow guides who always find ways to challenge me with their own knowledge. And of course, every day is different. When a morning begins with a loping lioness on the hunt and ends with a 10,000-pound bull elephant bathing in a hippo pool, well, let's see what our afternoon looks like."

What advice do you have for others looking to get started as a guide?

"Being a Safari guide is so much fun! We always find time to laugh, but you must remember that there is much to learn. It's one of the best professions in the world and you will enjoy it if you do your homework well. You have to be well rounded, have a sense of humor, and be ready with the knowledge and information and answers at your fingertips to keep your guests informed, entertained, and happy. And never give an answer you are not sure of. If I don't know the answer, I say so and then find it."

What's your most memorable safari experience?

"You know when news of a really good party spreads like wildfire? Imagine a grand and glorious male lion, six feet long and weighing at least 400 pounds, in a fight to death with a pack of hyenas over a juicy wildebeest kill. When we arrived at this primal scene, there were five hyenas, which was exciting enough, but then word got out and suddenly more swept in from all directions and soon there were 30 at the party. Adaptable and opportunistic, the hyenas immediately surrounded the lion, some trying to grab bites from the kill. The lion flayed and snarled, starting to scare them off, but they retaliated en masse by biting the lion's tail, rear legs, and rear end. At least one hyena died in the fight, but the lion eventually had to retreat, running to safety in a nearby marsh.

Not the end of the story! The hyenas followed and pushed him deeper into the water where he crouched to avoid the relentless attacks. The lion was finally rescued from these daring hyenas by his brother, who eventually emerged from some distance to find his sibling in danger. I was as amazed as our guests were about that one!"

Which safari region is your personal favorite, and why?

"The beautiful landscape and the abundance of game in the Maasai Mara is difficult to beat. The splendid beauty of the big cats, alongside leopard, cheetah, [and] elephant, so readily seen, is one of the world's most impressive marvels."

What's the best time to visit Kenya on safari?

"Kenya is good to visit year-round due to its location on the Equator, though April sees the most rain. We always make sure to find — and create — the finest experience for our guests."

What are three mistakes you often see guests make on their first safari ?

"Overpacking. No need to bring things like hairdryers and shampoo and lots of other things that Micato makes sure are in supply. Too many shoes. And too many clothes. Micato includes complimentary laundry service every day in the bush.

For those who are interested, bring a good camera with a good lens, for birds and other far-off shots. Some guests, who have only their phone for pictures find that they wish they had a longer lens. But of course, the new phones are getting so good that they can be a great tool for many people. My best advice is to know what you are after and know what your equipment is capable of doing. Then bring what suits you best.

People on safari can get excited about an animal sighting and noise can end up making shy cats disappear into the bushes. Micato guests catch on pretty quickly and get pretty quiet, especially if an elusive leopard is nearby."

How has COVID-19 affected the safari industry in Kenya?

"Of course, there have been ups and downs. It was difficult when Kenya was shut off to international flights last spring. Safari and all tourism was brought to a standstill for months. Many camps and lodges had to close, at least on a temporary basis. Things were very quiet in the bush. The best moment was when flights to and from Kenya started again on Aug. 1 [2020]. Now that was a good day! When we re-started our safaris, we as guides were so pleased to have happy guests with us again. Many safety measures went into action right away. Along with Micato, the airlines and the lodges we use have put rigorous COVID safety protocols in place and our guests have been very happy with Micato's protocols. Our guests have told me that the best decision they made was to travel during these times and not wait. That is so nice to hear."

What three words describe the beauty of a Kenyan safari?

"Exhilarating. Incredible. Awesome — and, may I add, the only thing missing? All of you!"

Kenya Safaris To Masai Mara Game Reserve

Masai Mara Game Reserve is a magnificent tourist destination with wide spreading acacia dotted plains that protect thousands of wildlife. The Masai Mara Reserve has the highest concentration of animals in the Kenyan territory.

It gets its name from the Maasai residents, a pastoral community who migrated from the Nile Basin.

Found in the South Western part of the country, this reserve is 1,510 square kilometres and is famous for accommodating more than two million Wildebeests, Antelopes, and Zebras that form the famed great migration to and from Serengeti Park in Tanzania .

Likewise, you will find numerous other wildlife in the Masai Mara reserve for example the Cape Buffalo, Rhinos, Crocodiles, Giraffes, Elephants, and more than 450 bird species.

What Is The Great Migration And When Is The Best Time To See It In Masai Mara National Reserve During Kenya Safaris?

The great migration is one of Africa’s major attractions in which over 1.4 million wildebeests and hundred thousands of Antelopes and Zebras are on a spiral move between Serengeti National Park in Tanzania (South) and Masai Mara Reserve in Kenya (North).

This annual wildebeest migration occurs in different patterns that may involve violent dramatic and fast moves, others are slow and gentle but watching the experience is surely mind-blowing and striking. Among all the game-viewing experiences, the Great Migration is an uplifting adventure for your safari tour. However, it is important to note that before booking a tour to watch this remarkable scene, the experience is not a guaranteed adventure at any moment of the year. Nonetheless, sometimes tourists witness the game viewing of this migration even out of the expected high season for watching them. This is because the animals leave Serengeti as soon as the grasses start to dry and they return as soon as possible for them.

Tourists may either wait for the migrating animals to come to them depending on where they are waiting from or decide to track where they have gone.

However, you may pay extra money for some special tour activities in Masai Mara and other destinations or if you need to have a private guide and a safari vehicle for game drives during your luxury Kenya safari game viewing.

Ways To Experience Luxury Travel To Kenya

The phrase “luxury Kenya safaris” says it all. It is an experience where you enjoy great comfort and less involvement in preparing for your travels.

Usually, those who are for a luxury safari use a tour operator to organize their trips to the various destinations and take care of every detail.

Below are the top 3 different ways in which you can experience a luxury safari to the beautiful pride of Africa.

Frequently Asked Questions About Kenya Safaris

This wild country is best for wildlife safaris as the many parks offer the rare opportunity for game viewing the most sought-after animals of Africa in unmeasured abundance. You will find her a rich land for game viewing of both terrestrial and marine animals However, you can also visit this destination to experience the unique cultures and also do a birding tour

The big five in Kenya safari tours were the most sought-after animals among those who hunted for sport. This is because they were considered to be the most dangerous and difficult animals to shoot on foot. These five African animals are the Lion, Leopard, Cape Buffalo, Elephant, and Rhino. The country is currently a great sight for game viewing during your tours. Rhinos in particular are famous at the Ol Pejeta Conservancy, a famous Rhino sanctuary that is among the best private conservancies in the country. This conservancy is a Rhino sanctuary for the largest number of the endangered Black Rhino species in East Africa. It is also a sanctuary to the only remaining northern white Rhinos in the world

A more fulfilling trip to the pride of Africa should take you two weeks. This way, you will be able to have a better overview and knowledge about cultures, beaches, and Kenyan major wildlife destinations like the Maasai Mara Reserve, Samburu Reserve, and Tsavo East Park

Kenya safari tours are not as expensive as many people think and also not as cheap as others expect them to be. Depending on how you plan for the tour experience you would like to have, you can have an experience that provides value for money. However, some of the extra charges may make your tour a bit expensive. Some of them are park entrance fees, accommodation options for the tourist, extra tour activities, and the means of transport used, especially a high-end safari vehicle. However, there are various ways to do Kenya safari tours on a budget. Some of them are sleeping in a budget lodge or tented camps on a Kenya camping safari, visiting in the low season, and doing self-travel without using a tour operator.

Even though some countries do not require a visa to enter the country, others like Canadian passport holders need it. They will need an electronic tourist visa before going to visit the country. Additionally, you need to have a passport that is at least valid for 6 months and also be vaccinated against yellow fever

A family trip will cost between USD 2000 to USD 10,000

With the right preparation and planning, it is a fairly budget destination to visit. This is because you can arrive there directly using an airplane and it is not a very big country that would take a lot of fuel while driving to the different tourist destinations. Additionally, many tour operators offer budget safaris to travelers on their journey to this amazing country in Africa

Yes, it is safe to visit the country during your African tours. However, it is important to take note of minor incidents like robbery, kidnapping, and generally high levels of crimes.

Generally, a Kenyan safari is better than a Uganda tour. It is easier to spot thousands of wildlife, including wild cats and the big five in the former than in the latter during your East African safari. Additionally, the destinations offer more lodges than the ones in Uganda, hence making it quite a more expensive place for a tour than Uganda. Visit the Maasai Mara and the Tsavo East and Tsavo West parks for amazing experiences. Uganda however has better primate experiences than Kenya

Nairobi is about 270km away from Masai Mara on the South East of the reserve. Ready to plan your Kenya safari tour? Let us help you arrange a fascinating adventure to the pride of Africa, the birthplace of safaris to East Africa. You will explore the rich wildlife, the beautiful plains on which they live, and the extensive cultures they have. Book your safari today!

The dry seasons of around June to October and January to February are the best months to visit Kenya. This is more so a favourable period to have an unforgettable game viewing experience of the Great Migrations of thousands of wildebeests crossing between Serengeti Park in Tanzania and Masai Mara Reserve in Nairobi. Additionally, the dry seasons will give you the ease of seeing wildlife within the thin vegetation, and make the tracks dry for a safari vehicle on game drives while game viewing

A common inquiry to Kenya safari tours is “How much is a safari trip to Kenya?” The cost of an East African safari to the pride of Africa depends on several factors like the tour package being sold, the number of people coming for the trip, and the accommodation that the guests choose to have. Depending on these aspects, your tour budget will cost approximately $200 to $10,000

Where To Go For A Safari In Kenya There are several Kenyan safari places where you can go for an African adventure and some of them include terrestrial and marine national parks, different wildlife reserves, and sanctuaries. The Masai Mara annual wildebeest migration makes it among the best destinations in the country

Only on a Kenyan safari could you see an elephant wander freely past a football pitch

Elephants drinking at a watering hole by Kilaguni Serena Safari Lodge

I had just snapped a photo of an elephant wandering in the fields a few metres away from where a football match was being played, when a man in a truck pulled up next to me and pointed at my camera.

Through a grin as wide as the Great Rift valley, he shouted: ‘When you post that photo, make sure you write “only in Africa”.’

I had seen lions, elephants and giraffes, explored sacred forests and watched beautiful sunsets throughout my trip to Kenya , but nothing turned my head so quickly, or encompassed the sheer awe and unique beauty of this country more than that moment.

An elephant passing by a football match

There’s a sense in Kenyan culture – far removed from the hustle and bustle of the West – that all will work out, one immortalised in media as the Swahili phrase Hakuna Matata . Will it rain today? We don’t know, we’ll make do. A delayed flight ? No worries, you’ll get to your destination eventually. No lion sightings today? Never mind, let’s try again tomorrow.

Even an elephant as your backdrop while having a kick about brings a wry smile from the locals, a matter-of-fact attitude that this is Kenya , this is Africa, all is as it should be, and the unexpected is the only thing that is expected.

On a safari journey

I had just finished four days of a safari trip as part of a Tui package to Kenya billed as a cheaper and more accessible travel package for those looking to explore the country’s famed nature reserves.

The concept offers travellers a taste of the Kenyan coast and the majesty of its national parks with all the scenery, wildlife and culture that make this part of the world so special.

Jeremy looking out of a safari truck

To experience a safari (a Swahili word meaning ‘journey’) is the most spectacular example of having to accept what you get you get. On some game drives, we were searching the horizon – every tree and shade of grass – for any sight of some of Kenya’s most famous animals. Sometimes hours might go by when it’s just you, your jeep, and the Kenyan wilderness.

But that can all change in an instant.

One day into our safari in the tranquil Tsavo East National Park, our driver Jimmy (who had the cool air about him of a prime poker player) suddenly reversed away from where we had been observing an elephant to speed back down the road. He had just been radioed that a lioness and her cubs had come out of the long grass.

a baby lion cub

Seeing a tiny lion cub in the wild roar a beautifully pathetic roar in front of its siblings, golden fur and deep orange eyes and all, was a moment that took our breath away, locked it somewhere five minutes down the road, and didn’t return it to us until the lions had finally disappeared back within the grass.

Such sightings are rare, but that’s why you take the risk and go on a safari : for moments like that.

a giraffe in tsavo east national park with mountains behind

Much more frequent sightings include elephants, giraffes, wildebeests, antelopes and a variety of exotic birds (you haven’t seen anything until you’ve seen a secretary bird doing its best Monty Python silly walk impression).

We even found numerous hippos yawning their gigantic heads out of the water before splashing them back down again.

There’s no guarantee to see anything, but the fact we were no longer surprised to spot elephants two days into our trip reflects how likely it is that you are to come across them.

TUI's Kenya package

TUI is offering a  Kenya taster safari and stay  package exploring the beautiful Mombasa coast and Kenya’s national parks on safari for a total of 9 nights.

From £2742 per person travelling on October 3, the package includes:

  • Indirect flights with British Airways
  • 23kg luggage and transfers
  • Full board five-night safari tour
  • Choice of all-inclusive or half board four-night beach stay at a choice of resorts

Beyond the animals

However, safaris are more than just the wildlife. For every ‘big five’ animal you don’t get to see is an awe-striking vista; miles of yellow grass plains basking in the golden dawn rays and mountains stretching out behind every tree.

There are a variety of incredible lodges to make the most of Kenya’s parks, and TUI have picked some of the most beautiful.

The rustic verandas outside each room of the Ashnil Aruba Lodge offer a serene Tsavo East sunrise every morning, with huge flutters of birds flying over the trees surrounding it. The only thing missing is a Hans Zimmer score.

Meanwhile, the Kilaguni Serena Safari Lodge, with its cathedral-like dining space facing out over a watering hole and backdropped by mountains upon mountains, is something out of a photographer’s dream.

But the crowning glory of Kenya’s safari accommodations is undoubtedly Salt Lick in Taita Hills. A small colony of Swiss-like towers on stone stilts, connected by wooden suspension bridges over a small lake, it’s as unique a lodge design that I have ever seen.

Elephants next to football pitches and lion cubs aside, possibly my favourite moment of the trip was waking up to see the sun rise up from Salt Lick’s rooftop bar.

To a soundtrack of crickets sleeping and birds awakening, with rows of deep blue mist stretching right back across the fields to the mountain tops, the sun, majestically, began to reveal itself.

With a coffee in hand, I stared at the rays reflecting over the water as elephants began to make their way to drink. I knew I had never experienced a morning quite like that, and am unlikely to ever do so again.

Coastal living

TUI’s package picks the coastal region surrounding the city of Mombasa as the trip’s ‘sit-back-and-relax’ location, and has a list of serene resorts and hotels to stay at (as well as featuring some of Kenya’s most interesting cultural experiences).

Mombasa, which means ‘fighting island’, is a busy city featuring multiple historical landmarks and museums. The Swaminarayan Temple is one of them, and this awe-inspiring example of Hindu architecture in Kenya is well worth a visit, embodying the influence Indian immigration has had on the country (as well as its food).

But it is Fort Jesus – a huge fortress built in the shape of a man by the Portuguese over 400 years ago – that steals the show in Mombasa. Majestic and imposing, with canons facing off to sea in all directions speaking directly to Mombasa’s ‘fighting’ name, it’s a must-see for fans of historical warfare.

You can also choose to book side excursions to visit local community projects, such as the Kaya Kinondo Forest, a sacred forest to the local Digo Mijikenda tribe and the first Kaya to open to the public. The Digo tribe also organises visits to their villages. These are important to counteract the luxury of the resorts, but tourists are reminded to be considerate and respectful (standard practice such as asking for permission for photos should apply).

Another particular highlight was the Pallet Cafe in Diani, a charming beach-side restaurant which supports hearing-impaired people in the hospitality industry.

Getting from the UK to Kenya

While non-stop flights – which take around 8 hours and 35 minutes – run weekly from London to Nairobi, routes to Mombasa typically require a stopover and can take upwards of 11 hours.

Passengers from the UK can take a British Airways flight from London Heathrow to Nairobi before travelling via Kenya Airways to Moi International Airport in Mombasa, a journey totalling around 13 hours.

Many of the resorts here – particularly those on Diani Beach – take inspiration from both local identity and past colonial architecture.

Baobab Beach Resort & Spa is a luxurious hotel just south of Mombasa, with its infinity pools and vast site stretching far across the beach like the branches of the famous baobab trees it’s named after. Perfect for a breather. But it is further north on Shanzu Beach where you’ll find the even quieter and more quaint spots to stay.

The infinity pool sunrise at Baobab Beach Resort & Spa

Serena Beach Resort was our beautiful last stop before we headed on safari, and was one of my all-time favourite hotel stays. Built to resemble a Swahili village, wood and palm trees are found at every turn and bright pink bougainvillaea are dotted all over the white stone walls. The distant sound of the trees swaying in the coastal breeze was the ultimate background noise to drift off to, ready to taste safari.

There are few words to describe what a tourist will take away from a brief glimpse of Kenya. It is overwhelming in its natural beauty, a paradox of serenity and mayhem. It is a country where its traditions co-exist with modernity, where its food and its buildings are influenced by different continents. But it is Kenya’s canvas of vibrant, striking images that stick with you long after you’ve left. Picture this:

7 Questions About Combined Kenya & Tanzania Safaris

Anthony Ham

Answered by

Anthony ham.

kenya best safari tours

Why is Kenya and Tanzania an ideal combination?

“Kenya and Tanzania go very well together for a number of reasons. Partly it’s geography. An international border may separate southern Kenya from Tanzania’s north, but together they form one of the most prolific wildlife territories on earth. In Kenya’s south you have the Masai Mara, Amboseli and the two Tsavos. Not far away across the border is Tanzania’s Northern safari circuit of the Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire and Lake Manyara, not to mention Africa’s highest mountain, Mt Kilimanjaro. And both countries have stunning Indian Ocean beaches. Making it all so much easier is the regular schedule of commercial and charter flights that connect Nairobi (Kenya) and Arusha (Tanzania), or the airstrips in Kenya’s parks with those in Tanzania: it couldn’t be easier to get between the two. This allows you to pick and choose between some of Africa’s best parks and reserves, safe in the knowledge that there are many excellent safari tour operators ready to take you there.”

What can I expect from a trip to Kenya and Tanzania?

“On a Kenya and Tanzania safari, you can expect to see lots of wild animals against a backdrop of numerous beautiful landscapes. This is some of the richest wildlife terrain on the planet. Which wildlife you see will depend on where you decide to go, but commonly seen animals on both sides of the border include big cats, elephant, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, numerous antelope species and, in some cases, rhinos. Landscape highlights include some of Africa’s highest mountains (Kilimanjaro and Meru), the peerless Ngorongoro Crater, the vast savannah grasslands of the Masai Mara and Serengeti, and superb beaches. While on safari you can also expect to stay in or close to the national parks or reserves you visit, sleeping in lodges or in safari tents in tented camps. You’ll also have a guide who will show you around and help you to understand more about what you’re seeing.”

How much does a safari to Kenya and Tanzania cost?

“Safari tours to Kenya and Tanzania vary greatly when it comes to cost. As a very rough estimate, expect the cheapest budget camping safaris to start from around US$150 per person per day, while top-end luxury trips can cost US$500 per person per day or even much higher. There are a number of different variables to consider when calculating the cost of your safari. First, there’s the accommodation. If you’re staying in simple camping tents you can, of course, expect to pay significantly less than if you’re staying in five-star rooms or luxury safari tents. The season in which you’re traveling can also play a role: high-season prices can be double the prices you’ll pay in low season, or even more. Then there’s the type of safari you choose. If you go on a private safari (where you’ll have the guide, vehicle and other services all for yourself), you can expect to pay much more than if you travel on a group safari (where these services and their costs are shared). A third option is a self-drive safari, where you pay more for transport in return for having greater independence, although accommodation costs can vary, depending on whether you’re camping or staying in lodges or tented camps.”

What is the ideal holiday length for a trip to Kenya and Tanzania?

“There are as many different answers to this question as there are tours, trips and packages. The ideal length of your Kenya and Tanzania safari will depend on numerous factors. One of these is, of course, how much time and money you can dedicate to your holidays. Once you have decided this, you can begin to plan how long you devote to each country and each destination within those countries. A minimum to at least get a taste of what Tanzania and Kenya have to offer is two weeks. With two weeks you could spend a week in each country or divide it up differently depending on what you want to see. Flying between the two countries, and even between the various parks and reserves, may increase the cost of your safari, but it will cut down on traveling time and enable you to see more.”

What is the best time to visit Kenya and Tanzania?

“The best time to go on your Kenya and Tanzania safari is from June to October. This is the Dry season, which has two advantages. First, this is when you can generally expect clear skies and fine weather: rain is very unlikely to disrupt your safari. The second benefit is that these months are when the animals are easiest to see: as the landscape dries out, animals are drawn to the diminishing number of water sources, which makes them easier to see. If you’re a birder, you may want to consider going sometime between November (when millions of migratory birds arrive in East Africa) and April (when most of them return). If spending time at the beach is an important part of why you’re here, the Kenyan and Tanzanian coastlines are year-round destinations, although some rains are a little more likely from November to April or May. It’s certainly warm enough to enjoy the beach lifestyle all through the year.”

Which parks and reserves should I visit on a Kenya-Tanzania safari?

“There are so many choices when it comes to parks and reserves that choosing which ones to visit could be one of the most difficult things about planning your Kenya and Tanzania safari. In fact, you could go on several trips or holidays and still not even come close to seeing everything. In Kenya, the most rewarding safari destinations for both wildlife and landscapes are the Masai Mara and Samburu National Reserves, and Amboseli, Tsavo East, Tsavo West and Lake Nakuru National Parks. In Kenya far more than in Tanzania, it also pays to look beyond the national parks and reserves, especially around the Masai Mara where there are numerous community-run conservancies that allow far fewer tourists and permit night drives, off-road game drives and plenty of community engagement. In Tanzania, the main parks and conservation areas of the Northern safari circuit (Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Lake Manyara and Tarangire) are all exceptional wildlife destinations. You could visit any of these on their own and you would have an excellent safari, so to visit more than one would be a real treat. These northern parks work especially well if you’re also visiting Kenya. Out in Tanzania’s east, Gombe and Mahale Mountains National Parks are first-rate chimp tracking spots, while Mikumi, Ruaha and Nyerere (formerly Selous) National Parks in the south are also outstanding.”

Will I see the Big Five?

“You might see the Big Five (lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo) on your Kenya and Tanzania safari, but doing so requires careful planning. Few parks have all five but you could easily combine neighboring or nearby parks or reserves to make up the full complement. For example, there’s a good chance that you’ll see all five if you visit Ngorongoro and the Serengeti on the same trip, or Nairobi National Park and Amboseli. Both the Masai Mara and Serengeti have the Big Five within their boundaries, but in both cases, rhinos can be hard to see. Far more reliable is Ol Pejeta Conservancy in Kenya’s north. It’s also worth remembering that the ‘Big Five’ was actually invented by hunters in early 20th-century Kenya. They chose these animals as the most dangerous big animals for them to hunt. Sightings of other species in Kenya and Tanzania can be just as thrilling, including cheetah, African wild dog, wildebeest, giraffe, zebra and so many more.”

10 Best African Countries for Safari

#1 Botswana

Recommended Tours:

Thus, poachers are seen as enemies of the people. As a result, Botswana has come into view as Africa's most sought-after ecotourism destination. Starting from the Chobe National Park to the Moremi Nature Reserve, you'll be able to witness numerous gems all around the country.

Back in 2014, Botswana widely banned the hunting of wild animals and implemented strict laws which are still in practice. The country resumes its zero-tolerance for poaching and their very own environmental minister, Tshekedi Khama, has even launched a shoot-to-kill policy for poachers.

Botswana, with its wildlife conservation and natural parks, is a haven for nature lovers. It is currently in the top 5, as its approach to the protection and conservation of wildlife is worth the praise. As a country, it is very forward-thinking, some may even call it aggressively forward-thinking when it comes to its preservation and anti-poaching laws.

<p><strong>Recommended Tours:</strong></p> <p>Its fertile land provides a safe and comforting home to around 200 <a class="wpil_keyword_link" href="https://www.animalsaroundtheglobe.com/mammals/" title="mammal">mammal</a> species. This includes elephants, hippos, monkeys and so much more. Along with 650 bird species and 5,500 plants. Most of the land in Namibia is occupied by the Kalahari and Namib Deserts. Along with that, the country also has 12 national parks and many other areas which are protected. So, if you go there for a safari, you'll have many rich areas to see and explore.

When it comes to countries with the least amount of population, Namibia is one of them. Which proves to be a good thing for nature. This is because most of the land in Namibia is still unspoiled by human filth or any sort of development, giving nature a chance to breathe.

In the country's Volcanoes National Park, you'll find 10 habituated gorilla families. Groups of 8 trekkers can visit them for one hour per day. But that's enough to get the best African safari experience. And as a nature lover, you'll enjoy the experience to the max.

If you've been around for some time, you'll be familiar with Rwanda's mountain gorillas. They were famously broadcasted and their fight for survival was shown on  National Geographic . This was all thanks to the late  Dian Fossey  back in the 1970s who advocated for the rights of these mountain gorillas throughout her life.

Considering the tragic history surrounding the mass genocide of the people of Rwanda back in 1994, it's truly a blessing what the country has achieved in the past 25 years. There have been countless investments in infrastructure. This has resulted in the country being a very fast-growing destination for ecotourism.

#6 South Africa

But given all the advantages, it's safe to conclude that South Africa also suffers from over-tourism. I mean, if you have so many great attractions, people will flock towards it. Chances are that you'll find yourself in the middle of dozens of unruly visitors who are not too keen on obeying the rules. This occurs mostly during the peak seasons.

Annually, the country has one million visitors. Its biggest attraction is the Kruger National Park with its enrichment in biodiversity. Visitors there also have the liberty to self-drive, thus, getting a first-person private but superb experience.

For some time now, South Africa has been climbing the charts to become one of the most popular destinations for African safaris. Given its location, South Africa is a very convenient and cheap destination for people from the United States. Besides that, the country also boasts a well-developed infrastructure which makes it perfect for luxury travelers as well.

#7 Tanzania

One of the most popular locations would be the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The country is also a haven for 1100 different bird species. It's no wonder that Tanzania gets this much rep. Especially when the country boasts so many wonders.

We talked about Kenya being the top destination for Safari. Now Tanzania here takes second place in being the continent's most popular safari destination. And why shouldn't it? The country has 16 national parks and an extraordinary amount of wealth and wildlife wonders for the people to witness.

Some of its natural attractions include housing the highest mountain range in Africa. It also has the world's largest free-standing volcano and the second-largest freshwater lake. With its 30 national parks and other wildlife reserves, Uganda boasts many more sanctuaries which are worth the visit. Especially if you're a lover of nature and wildlife.

Often called "The Pearl of Africa", Uganda is certainly a great pick for an African safari. Its reputation as being one of the best ecotourism destinations comes from the country's natural attractions and wildlife.

<p><strong>Recommended Tours:</strong></p> <p>Out of its 20 national parks, the Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park is home to many wildlife animals such as African elephants, Angolan giraffes, Cape buffalo, etc. Other than that, there are many private ownerships of National parks, notably the Kasanka National Park which is near the basin of Lake Bangweulu.
