Sacred Sites

15 of the Most Beautiful Sacred Sites in Nepal

religious places to visit in nepal

Beerpixs / Getty Images

Nepal is a predominantly Hindu country (81 percent) with a strong and visible Buddhist minority (9 percent), meaning it contains an attractive mix of religious sites. As Hinduism and Buddhism share common roots and histories, many sacred sites are actually important to both faiths. These sites aren't restricted to built structures: Natural features like mountains and lakes are also often considered sacred in Nepal. Wherever you go in this small, landlocked South Asian country, you will certainly see evidence of the Nepali people's deep and ancient culture and religious systems. Here are some of the most beautiful sacred sites in Nepal.

Boudhanath Stupa

TripSavvy / Chris VR

Boudhanath Stupa is the holiest Tibetan Buddhist site outside of Tibet, and certainly one of the most beautiful sites in Kathmandu . The enormous whitewashed dome is topped with an ornate gold-plated pinnacle, painted with the wise eyes of Buddha, and strung with thousands of colorful prayer flags. The present structure is believed to date from the 14 th century (although it was significantly restored after the 2015 earthquake), although holy structures have probably existed here for much longer.

Pashupatinath Temple

 Andrea Pistolesi / Getty Images

Pashupatinath Temple, on the banks of Kathmandu's Bagmati River, is the holiest Hindu temple in Nepal. Many Indian, as well as local Nepali pilgrims, visit. Devout Hindus come here to die and be cremated on the banks of the holy river (which is, unfortunately, very highly polluted). It's not known exactly how old this Shiva temple is, but some of it dates from the 4 th century B.C.E., and different buildings reflect different architectural styles. Only Hindus are allowed inside the temple buildings, but all visitors are allowed inside the grounds. Pashupatinath is especially crowded during the annual Shivaratri festival, when sadhus (Hindu holy men) converge on the temple.

Swayambhunath Stupa

Boy_Anupong / Getty Images

While the white dome and golden pinnacle of Swayambhunath Stupa look a bit like those of Boudhanath, this Buddhist site on top of a hill overlooking Kathmandu has quite a different feel. Swayambhu is smaller, but surrounded by lots of other interesting structures, as well as hundreds of monkeys (hence its nickname, the Monkey Temple). The holy complex has been in use since the 5 th century, and is definitely one of Kathmandu's must-visit sites .

Namo Buddha

Rupad Bajracharya / Getty Images

Located a couple of hours' drive east of Kathmandu, the small village of Namo Buddha houses Nepal's second-most holy Tibetan Buddhist site. The Namo Buddha stupa is small compared to Boudhanath or Swayambhunath in Kathmandu, but marks the spot where the Buddha is believed to have sacrificed himself to a hungry tiger during one of his incarnations. On a clear day, the Himalayan views from Namo Buddha are sweeping, and the newer Thrangu Tashi Choling Monastery is also worth checking out.

Budhanilkantha Temple

Bidur Prasad Shiwakoti / EyeEm / Getty Images

The Budhanilkantha Temple on the northern edge of Kathmandu is a temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu with a rare kind of statue. Vishnu is portrayed reclining in a pond, surrounded by (stone) serpents, and draped in bright orange marigold garlands. Its name actually has nothing to do with Buddha, as many English speakers assume: "Budha" refers to the Nepali word for old man, and "nil" means the color blue. Together, the name translates as "Old Blue Throat." Pro tip: Budhanilkantha Temple is a good place to visit on the way to the Shivapuri National Park.

Manakamana Temple

Kumud Parajuli / Getty Images

Located high on a hill in Gorkha District, the Manakamana Temple can be reached via a challenging uphill trek from the Trishuli River, or a scenic cable car ride from Kurintar (on the highway between Kathmandu and Pokhara). The pagoda-style temple was badly damaged in the 2015 earthquake, but has since been repaired. On a clear day, there are good views of the Himalayas as Gorkha district is home to some of Nepal's highest mountains.

Muktinath Temple

Gelia / Getty Images

Trekkers on the Annapurna Circuit pass the Muktinath Temple, located beneath the high-altitude Thorong La Pass, in remote Lower Mustang. Whether you get there via trekking or Jeep from the village of Kagbeni below, reaching the Muktinath Temple is quite an adventure. As it's more than 12,000 feet in altitude, the mountain views are unparalleled. Many Hindu and Buddhist pilgrims make the trip to this holy site. Followers of both religions believe it to be a place where liberation from the cycle of birth and rebirth can be found.

Lumbini Peace Park

This small town on the Western Terai (the plains bordering India) is where Prince Siddhartha Gautama was born in 623 B.C.E. The site of the Buddha's birth was "lost" for many centuries, but the archaeological evidence here is overwhelming. Unsurprisingly, Lumbini is a major pilgrimage site for Buddhists from around the world, along with sites just across the border in Northern India such as Sarnath and Bodhgaya .

Mt. Kanchenjunga

Richard l'Anson / Getty Images

The third highest mountain in the world sits on Nepal's eastern border with India. Like many other peaks in Nepal, it is considered sacred by the mainly Buddhist locals, who consider it to be a protector god. The 28,169-foot mountain can be climbed, but most travelers prefer to get a glimpse from an easier vantage point. Many short treks in eastern Nepal offer views of the mountain, especially those in the Ilam area, where tea is grown.

Lake Gosainkunda

 filrom / Getty Images

Lake Gosainkunda sits in the Langtang National Park directly north of Kathmandu. The 14,370-foot-high lake is surrounded by beautiful mountains and frozen for about half the year. Hindu mythology states that the gods Shiva and Gauri lived here, and thousands of pilgrims flock here during the Gangadashahara and the Janai Purnima festivals. In addition to pilgrims, some travelers make their way here while hiking the easier Langtang Valley trek.

Mt. Everest

John Harper / Getty Images

Called Sagarmatha in the Nepali language and Chomolungma/Qomolongma in Sherpa/Tibetan, Mt. Everest is sacred to the local Sherpa people who came over the mountains from Tibet several centuries ago. While the ethics of climbing the Mother Goddess are questionable (and the trek to Everest Base Camp is one of the more crowded in Nepal), the mountain can be seen from various other spots throughout the Himalayas, especially in eastern Nepal. On a very clear day, it can even be glimpsed from Kathmandu if you know what you're looking for.

Annapurna Sanctuary

Kriangkrai Thitimakorn / Getty Images

At the foot of the Annapurna massif in western Nepal, the Annapurna Sanctuary is a conservation area around the mountain's glacial basin that is also spiritually important. Because Lord Shiva, one of the most important Hindu gods, is believed to live in these mountains, the sanctuary is a sacred place to Hindus.

Plus, the local Gurung people, who are mostly Buddhists, worship these mountains for all they provide them with. Until recently, eggs, meat, women, and people belonging to the "untouchable" caste were banned from entering the sanctuary. While women and members of all castes can now enter, it's still a good idea to respect local beliefs and keep eggs and meat out.

Janaki Mandir, Janakpur

 Xandra R / Getty Images

The city of Janakpur, on the eastern Terai, is believed to be the birthplace of Hindu goddess Sita, Lord Ram's wife, who is also referred to as Janaki. It's been a holy site for many centuries, but the gorgeous Hindu-Koiri-style temple that is the town's centerpiece dates from 1910. It looks like the kind of building you'd see in India's Rajasthan state , and is very unusual in Nepal.

Mt. Macchapuchhare

Bartosz Hadyniak / Getty Images

Another of Nepal's sacred mountains, Macchapuchhare (aka Fishtail) cannot be climbed. In fact, at 22,943 feet, it's the highest peak never to have been climbed (officially). You don't need to climb it to enjoy it, though: The pointed peak looms behind the lakeside city of Pokhara, and can be seen from many treks in the Annapurna Himalaya.

Kailash Sacred Landscape

 Rudolph Thalhammer / Getty Images

Although holy Mt. Kailash and Lake Mansarovar sit in southwestern Tibet, parts of the 19,200-square-foot Kailash Sacred Landscape fall in far-western Nepal. The whole area is culturally and biophysically significant and dotted with snowy peaks, high-altitude lakes, and religious sites. It's where the waters of four major South Asian rivers originate: the Indus , Sutlej, Brahmaputra, and Karnali. The area is holy to Buddhists, Hindus, Jains, Sikhs , and followers of the Tibetan Bon religion.

Boudhanath Stupa

religious places to visit in nepal

The distinctive white dome and the golden peak of Boudhanath Stupa is the primary holy site for Tibetan Buddhists outside of Tibet itself. It was built in the 14th-century and is one of the biggest stupas in the world. Many Buddhist sites in Tibet are modelled on this extraordinary place. The Boudhanath area is a hub of Tibetan life in Kathmandu and the lanes around the stupa are full of Tibetan trinket shops catering to locals, as well as travellers. It’s auspicious to take a clockwise route around the stupa – known as a kora – and to spin the brass prayer wheels along the way.

Located in the Langtang National Park, Lake Gosainkunda is a Hindu pilgrimage spot as well as a popular trekking destination – at 4,380m (14,370ft) above sea level. It remains frozen for about half the year and is an important place for Hindus, as according to Hindu mythology, the gods’ Shiva and Gauri lived here. Thousands of pilgrims flock here during the Gangadashahara and the Janai Purnima festivals . It’s relatively quiet the rest of the time, though. Trekkers are advised to do the Gosainkunda trek after completing the Langtang Valley trek – rather than the other way around – to help with acclimatisation.

religious places to visit in nepal

Spend any time on the roads of Nepal and you’ll soon learn that “Buddha was born in Nepal.” At least, that’s the slogan emblazoned across every second truck and taxi. Lumbini is a small town in the Western Terai – on the plains bordering India – and according to archaeological evidence, was indeed the place where Buddha was born, in 623BC. Although some sources now suggest he was actually born in 563BC. Today, Lumbini is home to monasteries and Buddhist centres built by various countries with strong Buddhist traditions, so touring the place is like taking a tour of Buddhist architectural traditions from around the world.

Manakamana Temple

religious places to visit in nepal

The Manakamana Temple is located high on a hill in Gorkha District. Anyone travelling the highway between Kathmandu and Pokhara will have noticed the cable car on the hill – about halfway up – which leads up to the temple. Alternatively, it’s possible to trek the steep route up. Although the temple itself was badly damaged in the 2015 earthquake and is undergoing repairs, Manakamana is still worth a stop. On a clear day, there are good views of the Himalayan mountains. There are lots of places to buy delicious Indian snacks, as it’s a popular pilgrimage place for Indian and Nepali Hindus.

Muktinath Temple

religious places to visit in nepal

Muktinath – at 3,710m (12,171ft) altitude – is a sacred place to both Hindus and Buddhists, as it’s believed to be a place where liberation from the cycle of birth and rebirth can be found. It’s located at the foot of the Thorung La pass, which must be crossed on the Annapurna Circuit Trek and is a short drive – or a longer hike – from the village of Kagbeni in Lower Mustang. On a clear day, the views of the snowy Himalayas and the dry, rocky landscape of the Mustang are incredible.

Swayambhunath Stupa

religious places to visit in nepal

Swayambhunath is an ancient Buddhist stupa on a hill overlooking the city of Kathmandu. It can be reached via a steep staircase on the eastern side, or a more gradual road on the west. It’s one of the most iconic sites in the Nepalese capital – with its white dome, ornate bronze spire and intricately painted Buddha eyes. It’s also surrounded by numerous statues, temples and stone Chorten, as well as the numerous creatures that give Swayambhu the nickname of “Monkey Temple”. Although not as large as Boudhanath Stupa, it should still be explored clockwise.

Shri Pashupatinath Temple

religious places to visit in nepal

Pashupatinath Temple in Kathmandu is often regarded as the most sacred Hindu place in Nepal. It’s located on the banks of the Bagmati River which, despite being sacred itself, is in a deplorably poor condition as it makes its way through the city. Nevertheless, Pashupati is an impressive place to visit and is one of seven Unesco World Heritage Sites in the Kathmandu Valley. It’s where many cremations take place and lots of devout Nepalis come here to die – so make sure to be respectful of grieving families if hanging around or photographing the burning ghats.

Mount Everest

religious places to visit in nepal

At 8,848m (29,028ft), Mount Everest – the world’s highest mountain, known as Sagarmatha in Nepali or Chomolungma in Sherpa and Tibetan – is sacred to the Sherpa people who inhabit the surrounding regions. Their name for it means “Goddess Mother”. While there are no prohibitions on climbing it – other than the need for an official permit, detailed preparation and the steep costs involved – would-be climbers would do well to remember its sacred status before littering it with garbage.

Manakamana integrates two Nepalese words i.e. Mana, which means heart, and Kamana, which means desires. However, since Nov 24, 1998, it has been easier for every devotee because of the cable car from Kurintar to Manakamana temple.

You can pay a fee for a cable car ticket to reach Manakamana temple. Within 10min you will reach the following side of the Manakamana temple without giving any stress to your body.

Halesi Mahadev

You might have no idea where the Halesi Mahadev temple lies. Squeezed between Dudh Koshi and Sun Koshi occupying the eastern portion of Nepal, Halesi Mahadev is the Hindu pilgrimage site of Nepal. This temple is honoured to Lord Shiva who is also renowned as the eastern Pashupatinath of Nepal. Not only Hindus, but this temple is also a Buddhist and Kirant pilgrimage site.

Inside the picturesque caves, the Halesi Temple is perched at the summit of a tiny hill at an elevation of 1500m. Adding a flavour to the cave there is also a slew of other little caves. According to the Legend, Lord Shiva used to hide in this Halesi cave to shield himself from the demon Bhasmasur.

Halesi Mahadev is the great temple for Hindus and given the 6th rank of Buddhist pilgrims of Buddhist and origin place of Kirat. Halasi is revered as an ancestral divinity by the Kirat people. This hallowed place is revered as a wagon that leads from evil to virtuous, wrongdoing to right-doing, and from illusion to reality.

This temple remains covered with thousands of devotees during festivals like Ram Navami, Ganesh Chaturthi, and other Shiva-related fetes. Not for worshipping, Halesi may entice visitors with its natural beauty, surroundings, and landscape vistas.

Interesting myths, how this name was placed?

A bird named Halesho used to trill in the massive madane tree which was directly above the existing Halesi Mahadev. Moreover, Lord Mahadev used to conceal himself from demons. As a result, early people chose to place the name ‘Halesi Mahadev’.

Janaki Temple

Devotees take a holy bath in Gosaikunda Lake to remove their sins even in a cool climate. During Janai Purnima, Ganga Darshan, the bulk of people from Nepal, India, and Sri Lanka ascend to dive in this lake.

Furthermore, the Hindu holy chants and texts, such as the Ramayana, Mahabharata, Vishnu Purana, and Bhagavad Gita, link Gosaikunda’s existence to Samudra Manthan.

Nepal is the destination with everything: towering Himalayan peaks and world-class trekking, sacred religious sites and wildlife-rich forests – not to mention well-preserved medieval architecture, tranquil hilltop towns and impressive culinary diversity.

Almost everyone visits Kathmandu, and most people take a trek through the Everest or Annapurna ranges – if you’re not sure where else to go in Nepal, try our list of places that shouldn’t be missed, from national parks patrolled by one-horned rhinos to hotspots for mountain adventure sports.

Kathmandu, Nepal's historic, foodie capital

Best for eating out.

An atmospheric old town, countless temples, shrines and religious sites, buzzing markets and several fascinating museums and galleries – plus a fair share of traffic and pollution – combine to make the Nepali capital a riot for the senses.

History and culture are the main draws for visitors to Kathmandu , but the city also has a remarkably varied dining scene, catering to visitors from across the globe. Alongside excellent Nepali cuisine, you can find everything from Korean bulgogi (barbecued beef), Japanese sushi and Thai curries to French crêpes, Austrian schnitzel and Middle Eastern falafel.

The Himalayas, the world's favorite trekking destination

Best for trekking.

Dominated by eight of the world’s ten highest mountains, the Nepali Himalayas stretch the length of the country and offer unparalleled trekking opportunities. The scenery is awe-inspiring – soaring snow-covered peaks, gin-clear lakes, terraced green hills, remote villages, chains of fluttering prayer flags. Best of all, you can hit the trails with minimal admin, beyond obtaining a Trekkers’ Information Management Systems (TIMS) card and paying any national park fees.

The Everest Base Camp, Annapurna Circuit and Langtang Valley treks are the most popular routes for travelers, but there are many other less-trodden but equally spectacular routes to follow. The dramatic two- to three-week trek to the base of the third tallest mountain, Kanchenjunga, in the far east of Nepal, is a stunning route that sees just a handful of trekkers.

Bodhnath, Kathmandu's most spectacular stupa

Best for tibetan buddhist culture.

The largest stupa (dome-shaped Buddhist monument) in Asia sits in the heart of the Kathmandu Valley, in the village of Bodhnath (also known as Boudha) on the outskirts of Kathmandu. The shrine is a hub of Tibetan Buddhist culture in exile, and thousands of pilgrims travel here daily to make a kora (ritual circumambulation) of the resplendent white stupa, which is best visited in the late afternoon after most tourists have departed.

Bodhnath is also a popular place for travelers to study Tibetan Buddhism, with a wide range of courses, seminars and talks on offer. Duck into the backstreets to see Nepal's most skilled repoussé metalworkers in action.

Meet tigers and rhinos in Chitwan National Park

Best for spotting rhinos.

A royal hunting ground in the 19th century, Chitwan became Nepal’s first national park in 1973 and has since earned international recognition for its conservation efforts, with growing populations of rhinos and tigers in the marshlands and forests flanking the confluence of the Rapti and Narayani Rivers.

Located in the western Terai, the thin ribbon of low-lying land running across southern Nepal, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is one of the finest places to view wildlife in South Asia. Its forests, grasslands, marshes and rivers are home to a profusion of animal and bird species, most notably a large population of one-horned rhinos, which have recovered from the brink of extinction thanks to some smart conservation practices.

Bhaktapur, Nepal's best-preserved medieval town

Best for medieval architecture.

Although badly affected by the devastating 2015 earthquake, the Kathmandu Valley city of Bhaktapur remains an architectural treasure trove, with an astonishing collection of well-preserved buildings dating back 600 years or more, including temples, palaces and traditional brick and timber homes.

There are three main squares flanked by temples and palaces, a maze of cobbled alleyways lined with red-brick shops and houses and innumerable tucked-away courtyards, shrines, pagodas and pavilions. A walk through Bhaktapur, which was once an independent kingdom, feels like a journey back in time, particularly if you stay overnight and see the city after the daytrippers have gone home.

Pokhara, gateway to the Annapurna range

Best for adventure sports.

Located on the shore of shimmering Phewa Lake, gazing up at the jagged Annapurna and Manaslu mountain ranges, the city of Pokhara is Nepal’s adventure sports capital. Travelers come here in droves to relax on the lakeshore and indulge in exhilarating activities in the surrounding mountain valleys.

As well as being the jumping-off point for some of Nepal's most popular treks (including the famous Annapurna Circuit), Pokhara is an excellent place to organize whitewater rafting, kayaking, mountain biking, canyoning and paragliding trips in the surrounding countryside, as well as straight-up adrenaline-charged activities such as bungee jumping and ziplining.

Lumbini, the birthplace of Buddha

Best for a buddhist pilgrimage.

A short drive west of the Terai town of Siddharthanagar (also known as Bhairawa), Lumbini is one of Buddhism’s holiest sites. In the middle of the Sacred Garden, the Maya Devi Temple marks the precise spot where Siddhartha Gautama – better known as the Buddha – was born in 563 BCE.

This intensely sacred site is surrounded by a vast complex filled with temples built in a wild variety of architectural styles by Buddhist communities from around the world, alongside a museum, cultural center and a towering white-and-gold peace pagoda in a park often visited by Sarus cranes.

Encounters with royal history in Gorkha

The best for hilltop palaces.

In the Middle Hills, Gorkha was the hometown of Prithvi Narayan Shah, who unified the warring kingdoms of Nepal in 1769 and founded a long-lasting royal dynasty that endured (with one short period of disruption) until Nepal became a republic in 2008.

The king was born in the 16th-century Gorkha Durbar , a spectacular palace-temple-fort complex in an elevated position high above town and accessed via a steep, meandering trail. Although Gorkha was close to the epicenter of the powerful 2015 earthquake, its buildings survived relatively unscathed and most damaged structures have since been restored.

Tables in the town square in Bandipur, Nepal

Bandipur, Nepal's most charming hill getaway

Best for a relaxing getaway.

An enchanting town perched on a ridge in the Middle Hills, high above the road from Kathmandu to Pokhara, Bandipur has been described as a “living museum” thanks to its array of 18th-century Newari mansions and temples.

Once an important stop-off on the lucrative India-Tibet trade route, it offers a captivating mélange of attractive guest houses, charming cafes, pedestrianized streets, dotted shrines, sublime vistas and numerous day hikes, making it an ideal spot for a break from the crowds.

Bardia National Park, for quieter nature encounters

Best for safaris without the crowds.

Around 400km (249 miles) west of Chitwan, Bardia National Park is larger, covers a greater range of habitats and receives far fewer visitors than its more heralded counterpart. Accessed from the quiet village of Thakurdwara, the reserve has one-horned rhinos, tigers, elephants and leopards, as well as gharial crocodiles and rare Gangetic dolphins.

Although spotting these creatures may require a little more time and patience than in Chitwan, Bardia’s pristine landscapes and the absence of crowds of visitors disturbing the wildlife are more than ample compensation. Early morning and late afternoon safaris offer the best chances of animal encounters.

Janakpur, Nepal's other sacred city

Best for hindu temples.

In the eastern Terai, the city of Janakpur is often overlooked by travelers, yet its glorious Janaki Mandir is an architectural masterpiece and has huge significance in Hindu mythology. Dedicated to the goddess Sita – who, according to legend, was born and married the god Rama here – the baroque Mughal-style temple draws pilgrims from across Nepal and India.

Janakpur is also renowned for its exquisite Maithili paintings, an ancient art form that depicts stories from Hinduism, as well as scenes from everyday life in the Terai. You can buy works from local painters at the Janakpur Women’s Development Centre just outside of town.

Get Himalayan views without the hard work in Nagarkot

Best for watching the sunrise.

On a ridge just outside the Kathmandu Valley, the village of Nagarkot has one huge selling point: it offers panoramic views of eight Himalayan ranges, including Everest. It's one of the best spots to come for mountain views without the effort of trekking.

If you’re lucky enough to be here on a clear, cloud-free day – these are most common from October to December and March to April – the sight of this magnificent sprawl of snow peaks is mesmerizing, especially at sunrise.

August 17, 2018

Since numerous centuries ago, the glory of the northern Himalayas has been attracting the attention of travel enthusiast, climbers and explorers. As a result, a large part of Nepal’s tourism is channeled to witness these majestic snow-capped mountains. Furthermore, when asked about Nepal; most of the world knows this magnificent country via the majestic Himalayan mountaintops. The most famous being the world’s highest i.e. Mt. Everest aka Sagarmatha in Nepali language, soaring at the elevation of 8,848m asl. In contrast, with the glorious history of more than thousand years, Nepal is the birthplace of Gautam Buddha: the light of Asia. Although a tiny but sovereign nation sandwiched between two giant neighbors; Nepal has a population of 28 million Nepalese affiliated to a diverse range of ethnic communities devoted to various religions. Thus, aside trekking the awe-inspiring trails of Nepal to explore the rustic natural scenery, one should also prefer paying a visit to landmarks and structures with some form religious importance and tolerance. In addition, these sites also flaunt exquisite ancient architecture and classic fine arts. So, today’s blog features the foremost four religious places of Nepal where tourist may visit and discover the inner peace and spirituality.

Well-renowned around the entire planet as the ‘birthplace of Gautam Buddha’, Lumbini is positioned in Terai plains of Nepal; thus, features farmlands and lush green fertile plains. Gautam Buddha is celebrated as the ‘light of Asia’ as he is the founder of Buddhism- the second largest religion in the world. Whether you are a Buddhist or not, you must not miss the window of opportunity to explore Lumbini while visiting Nepal as it is regarded as one of the holiest and religious sites of Nepal. Declared as UNESCO world heritage site in 1997 A.D.; Lumbini possesses a charm of its own. On top of that, you can also take a look at sites such as Maya Devi Temple, World Peace Pagoda and Myanmar Golden Temple while your stay in Lumbini.

Muktinath is a widely celebrated sacred shrine dedicated to Lord Vishnu. Worshiped by both the Hindu and Buddhist pilgrims; Muktinath lies within the Annapurna Circuit Trek, at the altitude of 3,710m asl. Due to its location in one of the most popular trekking route in Nepal, Muktinath welcomes a large horde of foreign as well as domestic trekkers and pilgrims. In the beginning, you have to head to Pokhara and take a 20min flight to Jomsom in order to reach Muktinath (for an individual with a limited time in Nepal) or else you can perform ‘Jomsom Muktinath Trek’ and explore the striking sites along the way to Muktinath Temple during your long-term stay in Nepal. Also, legends explain if an individual takes a bath in 108 spouts located within Muktinath then all his/her sins are washed away; therefore functioning as a place for salvation according to Hindu mythology.

Pashupatinath Temple:

Pashupatinath is the most sacred Hindu shire located in the banks of holy river Bagmati that sees thousands of Hindu devotees and pilgrims each year, who visit the temple and pay their homage. Devoted to the mighty Hindu deity Lord Pashupatinath, the main temple flaunts wonderful wood carvings and fine arts. Pashupatinath was declared a UNESCO World Heritage in 1979 A.D. During auspicious festivity of Shiva Ratri, thousands of devotees travel to Kathmandu with only one wish in heart i.e. to have a look and feel Lord Shiva within the vicinity of most religious Hindu site. Therefore, if you ever landed in Kathmandu-the capital city of Nepal, then the temple of Pashupatinath is a must see place in day and evening time.

Manakamana Temple:

Positioned 105km to the west of the capital city, Manakamana Temple is one of the sacred shrines to Hindus. It is easily accessible via a short drive from Kathmandu. Geographically, Manakamana Temple is situated on the vertex of a hill towering at 1,300m asl in Gorkha District. Visitors do not require hiking all the way to top of the hill as the temple is usually visited via a cable car network, which utilizes about 15 mins to reach the destination. At the temple, you can gaze at the beautiful surrounding scenery while listening to the constant chants and prayers devoted to Goddess Manakamana. It is believed that the goddess fulfills a wish pleaded by a faithful and clean hearten individual. Without a doubt, Manakamana Temple is the place that you must visit if you seek a religious site in order to make a memorable pilgrimage escapade.

The cave can be accessed by two gateways, one on its west and another on north and there is also an unfathomable tunnel to the east. Moreover, an opening to the sky near the northern gateway provides light to the cave.

Thus, the presence of these religious and sacred sites makes Khotang district a popular religious destination of Nepal.
