Discover the heart of Europe on a tour of Hungary. The country lies along the Danube River, and its capital city, Budapest, is divided into two districts: Buda and Pest. Climb to the Baroque palace complex, Buda Castle, walk along the terraces of Fisherman’s Bastion, and see Gothic Matthias Church. Why not admire the city from the deck of a Danube River cruise? Sail past the landmark Hungarian Parliament Building and under Chain Bridge. On the Pest side of the river, browse the vendors in the Great Market Hall, people watch in Hősök tere, one of the city’s major squares, or for a truly local experience, visit Széchenyi Baths, the largest thermal baths in Europe and a resident favorite.  In northwest Hungary, the colorful city of Győr historically sat at the crossroads between Budapest, Vienna, and Bratislava.

The 8 Best Hungary Tours For Unforgettable Adventures That Are Achievable & Affordable!

Expert travel storyteller Jordan Adkins, founder of InspiredByMaps.com, brings a decade of adventures across 101 countries and 450+ UNESCO sites into rich, off-the-beaten-path narratives, melding ecological expertise with genuine, seasoned travel insights.

On arrival in Budapest, one of the first things you notice is the colossal Parliament Building. Float by on a Danube cruise, and you’ll be entranced by the sheer scale of the edifice and amazed by its majestic likeness to its London counterpart. Quite fitting, of course, if you were to help administer the sprawling Habsburg Empire.

And then you get curious. Why do the seven towers of the Fisherman’s Bastion look familiar, like tents straight out of Central Asian steppes?

On a guided city tour, you’ll learn Hungary’s founding myth. The Magyars, nomadic warrior tribes from that region, took a cue from the mystical turul bird when it dropped its sword in Budapest, signifying where they should establish their homeland.

Tour operators with a wealth of insider knowledge would know juicy trivia – and where in Budapest that sword-wielding bird is perched –to make your visit to Magyarország more meaningful.

But if you were to ask the Romans why they named Budapest Aquincum whose ruins you can still see in Old Buda, they would tell you that’s how the Celts, the first inhabitants, called the place: abundant in water.

And what is Aquincum if not for its baths? Hungary overflows with it. One of the largest of them all – and a (scantily clad) crowd favorite – is the Széchenyi Thermal Bath. Come here for a soak after a hard day’s adventure.

Water is indeed central to a landlocked Central European country like Hungary. Danube River is an artery not just of Budapest, but a backbone of transportation and leisure as it winds through the country north to south, making epic port-to-port cruises a breeze! For the more intrepid, follow the Danube bike trail with a guide leading the way so you’ll know where to detour to get the best views and picnic sites.

Organized group tours can open doors of sightseeing opportunities you may not enjoy if you were to do it by yourself, like getting up to a church spire to take in panoramic views or visiting Roman ruins ahead of the crowds.

Guided tours are essential to minimize the impact of tourism on ancient and UNESCO-listed sites, which Hungary has plenty of. Some sites can only be visited with a tour guide in tow not only to enrich each visitor’s experience but also to ensure the integrity of the places being visited.

Guided tours equally ensure the safety of each participant, especially in more vigorous excursions. It’s worth the sum you pay extra to save time and dimes – and frustration when things don’t go as planned – so you can enjoy a worry-free holiday.

And which holiday would that be? Whether you only have a weekend or an entire week free, these tours are a great start (which will likely end with a well-earned soak in Budapest’s legendary baths).

I am very happy with my experience of Tour Radar. The trip to Budapest was great and Tour Radar was extremely helpful with any questions I had regarding the trip and the area. They provided a clear itinerary before the trip as well as offered suggestions of other things in the city that might be of interest. I would definitely book with Tour Radar again!

Cycling the Danube from Vienna to Budapest

1. Pre-trip coordination should have been a lot tighter and take less of clients' time. We found ourselves second-guessing what they meant and were assuring ourselves that all will be fine. 2. Hotels are average or above average. Would be nice to have a 4 star hotel for last 2 nights, instead of 3 star Sissi Hotel (sister of Corvin). 3. Food is good. Boat ride was a wonderful suggestion. Could have printed the timings in English, and locations of jetties in Hungary so we could get on boat to Hungary more easily. 4. Bikes were first c;lass. Very comfortable and well maintained. 5. Itinery was clear but the EU 6 route was somewhat disappointing in places as it really didn't exist. 6. Excellent logistics with pick up of luggage and delivery to next hotel.

What people love about hungary tours.

Sasa Tour Guide and Andro the driver were great. They took care of the group with their jovial attitude and ensured that individual's needs were met. They provided easy to follow directions and kept the group together. There were occasions when things would have gone wrong but Sasa and Andro ensured that they are there on every step along the way to make it trouble-free and enjoyable experience. I highly recommend intrepid tours and would consider future tours through Intrepid.

When on small group tour of Hungary , these small group journeys travel by coach and occasionally uses local transport, including trains and ferries. Specifics are always outlined in your tour itinerary. Hungary ‘s capital , Budapest , has a well-developed public transport system, with rail services linking all major cities, and bus services readily available. Taxis can be found in all major cities and are reasonably priced, though it’s best to call a reputable taxi company rather than hail one off the street.

Accommodation

In major cities such as beautiful Budapest , Odyssey selects for Private tours and small group tours the group stays in centrally located good quality 3-4 star hotels, with easy access to public transport.

In smaller towns or rural areas, we usually stay in family-run hotels or guesthouses. On our long stay tours, during which you spend the length of the tour in a single location, we use serviced apartments.

Tour guides

Odyssey always engages a local tour guide with regional knowledge to ensure an authentic experience during which you can learn as much as possible about the history and culture of places you visit.

Geography, environment and weather

Hungary is a landlocked country covering 93k square kilometres. Hungary has 2 major rivers, the Tisza and the Danube, the latter of which stretches over 418 kilometres of Hungarian territory.

Hungary is a largely flat country, and has three main geographic regions – the North Hungarian mountains, the hilly region of Transdanubia, and the Great Alfold (the Great Hungarian Plain), east of the Danube River.

Hungary has a continental European climate, with warm to hot summers and cold winters.

Depending on the time of year you intend to travel, check the weather reports and prepare accordingly.

World Heritage sites

Hungary has some 8 UNESCO World Heritage Site locations. You can view the official list of the sites here (https://whc.unesco.org/en/statesparties/hu). While every site is worth a look, here are a few highlights:

  • Aggtelek Karst and Slovak Karst caves, a cave system of over 712 caves with a geological history dating back millions of years
  • Benedictine Abbey of Pannonhalma, the second largest territorial abbey in the world

Festivals and events

Hungary has an eclectic mix of different festivals and events throughout the year. Hungarians are proud of their heritage, with festivals such the Koros Valley Folk Arts Festival celebrating folk traditions with music, dance, drama and crafts. The Busójárás celebration is a truly unique spectacle – held in the town of Mohacs, it involves the men of the town donning carved masks and furry costumes and parading through the streets of the town.

Hungary hosts numerous international events, including the Hungarian Formula 1 Grand Prix and the Budapest International Circus Festival.

No discussion on Hungarian cuisine would be complete without mentioning goulash – the famous meat stew is the country’s national dish, made out of beef, potatoes, carrots, and generous quantities of paprika. Paprika features prominently in Hungarian cuisine; aside from goulash, paprika is used to flavour numerous other dishes, including paprika chicken, halászlé (fishermen’s soup), and lecsó (a vergetable stew with a base of tomatoes, peppers, and paprika).

On a culinary walking tour your tour leader or local tour guide may entice you Sweeter offerings include kürtőskalács (‘chimney cake’, rolled in cinnamon, sugar, and nuts), palacsinta (crepes) and rétes (Hungarian strudel).

Every day was different with so much to see and do. Volcanoes, craters (including the pseudo ones), bubbling mud pools, and the active Strokkur Geyser, the bird life, black sand beaches, and those beautiful Icelandic horses. The time flew by...

Our guide Filiz was wonderful, very well informed, historical insights very helpful, her care for our well being exceptional. Could not have wished for a better tour leader.

Small group tour of Ancient Turkey

Our guide was a great ambassador for his country, wide knowledge of literature, history, customs, industry, fishing - also a perceptive and sensitive person who inter-acted so willingly with all of us!

The country was apparently calm and safe. People were friendly and helpful. Such a pity there has been such a down turn in tourism. Ros & Tony S. Sep '17

It is hard to believe that such a small country can contain so much dramatic scenery. Icecaps and glaciers, huge waterfalls, volcanos and hot bubbling mud, and those wonderful fjords and high mountain passes

We felt safe in Turkey and found the people friendly and helpful. Prices were excellent and the food almost universally magnificent. There is so much to see in the natural and built environment and the wonderful archaeological sites. It is sad to see the ordinary people and businesses suffering from the lack of tourists. Mary B. Sep '17

I was impressed by the number of places we visited. It was a very full itinerary which I like. We saw things of interest every day. I see no fault with the tour.

Anglo French Tour | Normandy, Brittany, Channel Islands tour

The geographical wonders offered by Iceland and Greenland left me in awe. The grandeur and spectacle of the countryside is breathtaking. Our leader (Rob) was excellent: well-researched, friendly, organized and good-humoured.

What time zone is Hungary in?

Hungary has a single time zone, Central European Time (UTC+1). Daylight savings starts on the last Sunday of March and ends of the last Sunday of October.

Is tipping customary

If you’re on an Odyssey tour, we take care of tipping so you don’t need to give it a second thought. However, in your free time, or if travelling independently, it’s essential that you tip an appropriate amount for services. In Hungary, tipping is appreciated though not mandatory. Tips in restaurants, bars and taxis are usually 10% of the price, though if tipping in a restaurant or bar, tip the server directly rather than leaving a tip on the table.

What is internet like in Hungary?

Wifi is widely available in cafes, bars, restaurants and hotels.

Can I use my mobile phone?

Check with your cell phone provider to see whether you’re able to make calls and use data while in Hungary. Many providers will allow you to pay a daily fee that allows you to make calls and check the internet while only being charged your regular rates. However, be certain to inform your provider that you’re heading overseas, because just like a bank they can turn off your service as a result of unusual activity.

Responsible travel tips for Hungary

  • Learn at least the local greetings to break the ice. Although many locals speak English, the more you know of the native language, the greater your experience of the country will be.
  • Carry a business card in your wallet or purse from your local hotel, to assist you with the return journey if you do become lost.
  • Always ensure that you are covered by travel insurance. If you need advice on this feel free to contact Odyssey and we’ll be able to help.
  • When travelling independently, make sure you check the opening hours of shops and museums so that you don’t miss out! Museums and galleries are often closed on Mondays. Also be certain to check whether your trip coincides with any public holidays, so you can plan accordingly.
  • Consider contacting your bank to inform them that you may be making purchases overseas. Otherwise, they may flag any activity on your account as suspicious. Also, check which ATMs and banks are compatible with your cards, to ensure you can withdraw cash with minimal fees.
  • Before departing, make sure you have a number of Hungrian notes, the forint, in a range of denominations. You don’t want to be carrying around enormous amounts of cash, but take enough to make it easy to pay in locations that might not accept credit card. It will also help you avoid card transaction fees, and it makes tipping a breeze.

Kedves Utasaink!

Most szeretnénk Önöket meginvitálni Törökországba, a Török Riviérára, Kusadasiba is nyaralni.

Here's what our guests have to say about this trip:

"Giro 2019 Week 3 was a fabulous experience. Nothing compares to riding the Giro route the same day as the professionals. The crowds, the excitement, fantastic food, amazing destinations and the superb planning of the Grand Tours team make this an experience not to be missed for any cyclist looking for an adventure. Everything about the Giro, Italy and the Italians was amazing, but it was the meticulous attention to detail, hard work, passion and dedication of Uri leading the cyclists, with a superb crew of Joel and Fabio in the support vehicles that really brought this experience to the next level. I had to leave early, but upon departure immediately started planning for Giro 2020. Thanks Uri and the team for an incredible adventure! If you are looking for an amazing cycling experience, look no further!"

Michael - guest on our Giro d'Italia 2019, Final week tour

"What an experience!! Spending a week in Italy amongst the excitement of the spectacle that is the Giro – each day offering up something truly memorable in terms of terrain, difficulty (hail to the mighty Zoncolan!) and what many of us love so much about Italy, the food and wine. The Dolomites were a true highlight of the week. The team at GTP was brilliant and really enabled our small group to make the most of the experience; from getting close up access to the race to making tweaks to the itinerary to get the best out of the day. Cudos to the ridereverykm group – incredible effort. Huge thanks to Kerry, (our guide extraordinaire), Keith and the entire team at GTP for making it such an unforgettable experience."

Jon - guest on our Giro d'Italia 2018, "Experience" Week 2 tour (Assisi to the Dolomites)

"The week I spent riding across Italy with the Grand Tours Project team was one of the most amazing experiences I’ve ever had. The scenery was incredible, the riding was exceptional, and the company was second to none. Every detail of our trip was meticulously planned. We had the pleasure of residing in historic castles, enjoying incredible local cuisine, visiting local coffee stops in small villages, and immersing ourselves in the full Giro experience as we were up close and personal to the athletes each day. The riding was challenging, beautiful, and well supported. Keith and his team ensured all of our needs were met and that no stone was left unturned. Friendships were built that will last a life time, I laughed until I cried, and this is an experience that has surpassed all others. A big THANK YOU to Grand Tours Project for making this a journey that we’ll never forget!”

Ashley, Giro d'Italia 2018: Week 2 "Experience" Tour (Assisi to the Dolomites)

"Cycling in Israel for the start of the 2018 Giro d’Italia was an amazing experience! GTP did a fantastic job arranging rental bikes, planning rides, and getting access to the race. It was a truly incredible to ride the TT course on closed roads in Jerusalem! The guides were wonderful and I would love the opportunity to ride with Grand Tours Project in the future. It was a fantastic way to experience both the excitement of the Giro and history and culture of Israel. I’m sure there will be another Grand Tours Project trip in my future!”

Wendy , Giro d'Italia 2018: GrandePartenza "Experience" Tour (Israel)

"The wonderful group that gathered in Jerusalem for this event, It is a memory that I will always cherish. The team were so accommodating and friendly. A casual but warm atmosphere prevailed with a professional relaxed but organized team. I highly recommend Grand Tours and really enjoyed meeting such a great group of diverse cyclists and characters at the same time. I hope to one day again be part of a Grand Tours group. The photos you sent bring back a constant reminder of these warm memories.
