HOW TO CONTACT US

Serengeti National Park

Serengeti hot air balloon safari

Hot air balloon flights

A Serengeti balloon safari is the ultimate way to experience the vastness of the national park.

Just imagine floating above the Serengeti plains skimming treetops in complete silence whilst seeing wildlife on the ground below. This is an essential safari experience for travellers to Serengeti National Park.

Serengeti balloon safaris locations

Balloon flights are run daily at 06h00 from four launch sites within Serengeti National Park: one throughout the year close to Seronera, and others in the Ndutu area (from 25 December to 15 March), in the Western Corridor (from June to October), and in northern Serengeti (from July to October).

The experience

Although not cheap, a balloon safaris is worth the expense. Floating serenely over the treetops as the sun peaks over the horizon permits you to experience the endless Serengeti plains from an unforgettable perspective. As we set departure very early morning, you may even spot some nocturnal predators getting ready for the day.

During most flights the pilot will include sections flown at a higher altitude allowing you to soak up uninterrupted views of the Serengeti; other sections may involve low-level flying, during which there may be the opportunity to see wildlife. Highly experienced pilots can follow rivers and streams, and will glide just meters above grunting hippos or wandering giraffes. Flying low allows you to take some great aerial wildlife photos. You move over the plains wherever the wind takes you, whilst being tracked from the ground by balloon crew in their vehicles.

Hot air ballooning & the Great Migration

The best odds for seeing the Great Migration with its innumerable wildebeest and zebra would be to book a flight in the Ndutu area as large herds congregate here between December and March. The other locations may also allow you to see the Great Migration from above, but please remember the herd is mobile and may only be in a particular area for a brief period, if not just a couple of days. This means that some luck needs to be on your side.

Serengeti hot air balloon flight price

A Serengeti balloon flight costs US$ 599 per person (this includes the Tanapa ballooning fee of US$ 40). This rate includes a transfer from your lodge or camp to the departure balloon site, the balloon flight itself, and a champagne breakfast (after landing). The flight will last anything in between 50 and 70 minutes. Depending on the landing site, also the breakfast site is set up at a different location daily. You will share the balloon with up to 16 passengers in total.

Planning a balloon safari

Be prepared for a very early start the transfer from the Seronera area leaves at 05h30 and from the other lodges in the area at around 04h00. Please remember to bring some warm clothing, and a bag in which you can secure camera, binoculars, and other personal items. We can arrange departures for a Serengeti balloon safari from most lodges and camps in the Serengeti. We strongly recommend booking a balloon safari in advance, as it concerns a very popular activity and gets booked out early (especially during peak season).

What happens if the weather is poor?

Ballooning is subject to suitable weather. If your flight is cancelled because of poor weather, you will be re-booked on a later flight If possible, otherwise your money will be refunded.

Why is a balloon safari so expensive?

Balloon flights are expensive to operate, especially in remote areas such as Serengeti National Park. Balloons -naturally- need to be in top condition, so they need to be replaced after about 850 flight hours. One balloon costs more than US$ 100,000. One also needs to consider the cost of fuel and crew to operate the balloon flight. Each crew comprises six people plus a licensed pilot. A further ten people (per balloon) operate behind the scenes to get the balloon airborne. So this adds up to a considerable amount of people. Additionally, there are the recovery vehicles, transfer vehicles, and backup operations. Last, a substantial part of the total price is allocated to conservation fees.

A sunrise hot air balloon flight over the Serengeti is truly one of the best highlights for any safari trip and is considered the ultimate safari experience. Serengeti Balloon Safaris not only takes you on an unforgettable hot air balloon ride through Serengeti National Park, but is one of the best ways to view African wildlife freely. See prides of lions looking for breakfast, herds of wildebeest, pods of hippos heading back to water before the sun rises, and much more! Serengeti Hot Air Balloon

Early morning wake-up

Some things are worth getting up early for and this is definitely one of them. Wake-up early morning and get ready for your once in a lifetime balloon safari experience. In the cool early morning, is best to wear a light jacket, long pants and comfortable shoes. Also remember to take your binoculars and cameras to document your memorable adventure. Before pickup, enjoy some coffee or tea in the lobby before your night drive to the balloon site.

4:15 to 5:00 am- Pickup at your lodge or camp

Pickup time will depend on the camp or lodge you are staying at. Here you will be picked for your night drive to the balloon staging site.

5:00 to 6:15 am- Drive to the launch site

Enjoy a night game drive through the Serengeti as you are transferred from your lodge/camp to the balloon staging site. This roughly hour long drive is an experience in itself as you may see nocturnal animals in the headlights that you would not have encounter during the daytime.

6:10 to 6:45 am- Prepare for flight

Your skilled, licensed and experienced pilot will take you through the important safety briefing ahead of your flight as the sun begins to rise and the launch crew begins to inflate the balloon. The balloon and basket are huge and compartmentalized for comfort and safety (accommodating 16 passengers). Once ready, crew members hold the basket steady as you climb into the basket and prepare to lift off.

6:45 to 8:15 am- African safari from the sky

Every hot air balloon flight is a unique experience and is dictated by the direction of the wind and the weather. This makes the end point unknown, but this is all part of the adventure. The flight is very smooth and you feel like you are just gliding through the air since the balloon is traveling at wind speed. Discover a unique perspective and amazing photographic opportunities. Throughout the flight, your balloon may travel to high altitudes of at least 1000 feet, giving you a panoramic view of the Serengeti landscape for miles ahead. At other times, you may descend low enough that you just gently brush the tips of the grass and witness the African wildlife up close. The variety and number of wildlife you may see varies with the time of year, weather conditions and luck. But without a doubt every flight is sure to be a memorable experience. Depending on the year, witness the greatest show on earth with a bird’s-eye view of the wildebeest migration. Travel to areas where vehicles cannot go. Hot air balloon ride provides the best opportunity to go “off-roading”. Explore outside the road trails to secluded areas or float over rivers. After about an hour or so of gliding through the Serengeti plains, the basket will begin to touch down on land. But this trip is not over yet.

8:15 to 8:30 am- Champagne toast

Once back on land, it is a balloonist tradition to toast the flight with bubbly. After taking a short walk or drive from the landing spot you will find yourself raising a glass to your successful and magical trip though the skies. Afterward you will be driven to a special Serengeti bush breakfast spot where you will meet up with other balloon passengers.

Serengeti Balloon Safari

8:30 to 9:30 am- Serengeti bush breakfast

Now is time to savor a hot breakfast in the middle of the Serengeti plains under the sweeping canopy of an acacia. Enjoy a freshly cooked hot English-style breakfast while having amazing conversations with fellow passengers. Tropical fruit, fresh baked bread, and eggs cooked in the bush, all made more delicious by the location, and served on linen, bone china and Sheffield cutlery in an ‘Out of Africa’ style. Now is the time to soak in this amazing and exceptional balloon flight you have just been a part of and relish the moment.

9:30 am- Transfer to collection point

Once breakfast has ended and you have received you flight certificate, you will be taken back either to your camp/lodge or to a collection point to meet up with your driver/guide for a continued safari game drive.

Overall, this hot air balloon adventure is truly the ultimate safari experience and worthy of being on anyone’s bucket-list.

With each metre, more of the plains come into view, and you begin to appreciate the sheer scale of it all. Looking down, a herd of Zebra and Wildebeest continue their journey northward, providing pockets of colour on the otherwise golden - seemingly endless - savannah.

Hot Air Balloon Safaris in Tanzania

The balloon safaris operate in different parts of the Serengeti at different times of year. In Central Serengeti, the balloon safaris operate year-round, whilst in the north, south (Ndutu), and west, they operate seasonally.

Hot Air Balloon Safaris in serengeti

Hot air balloon safaris in serengeti.

Hot air Balloon safaris in Serengeti is one of unforgettable magical experience one can have in the large open plains of Serengeti National Park . Floating on air early in the morning at dawn makes you feel chilly, the African sunrise experience and above all you will have an eagle eye at the open plains of Serengeti National park . You will be able to see animals from the top like hunting big cats, wildebeest migration, Elephants, Zebras, Topis and others.

The Balloon Safaris

The Hot Air Balloon safaris in Serengeti National Park starts very early in the morning with a pick up from your camp at around 5:00 am with light cup of tea. You will then be driven to the starting point where the pilot and other balloon crew will brief the guests. Before the hot air is released, all the guests are meant to be on the basket of the balloon, where they will sit and tightened their sit belts before the balloon sets off.

The sizes of the balloon differ and their capacity ranges from 8 to 16 people, driven by the power of wind while the Hot air from the gas cylinders help in control and directing the balloon, it also determines the height at which the balloon level will be. Starting slowly in slow motion as the balloon is attached to the standing Serengeti safari van on the side till it sets off peacefully the other crew members untie before its late for it to take off.

Hot Air Balloon Safaris

After the flight has taken off you will then be floating in air and the crew guide will be explaining to you all the animals, shrubs and other visible nature during the flight. When an action is captured the Balloon can be held on stand still for you to fully observe the action taking place. The pilot can also get the right angel where everyone can fully observe the action at that same time.

The flight will last about 3 hours on air, depending on the factors or the weather of the day. After descending to land at its landing points where the balloon car crew will come and pick you up for the, have bush breakfast served, a toss with a glass of wine at the bush before we drive back to the Tourist information center where you will meet your driver guide to continue with other programs of the day.

Balloon Companies

More About The Serengeti

More about more about the serengeti, about the serengeti.

Since its early beginnings in 1921 when the first steps were made to protect this area, the Serengeti has become arguably the most famous National Park in the world, a World Heritage Site and one of the most important areas of biodiversity on our planet. Gazetted in 1951, the now 14,750kmsq of the Serengeti National Park forms part of the wider Serengeti eco-system comprising the Masai Mara, Grumeti and Maswa Game Reserves and contiguous with the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and Loliondo Game Controlled Area. The diverse landscape, ranging from the quintessential plains in the south to the gallery forest of the west and the hilly woodland to the north define a park that is plentiful in bird and animal life. A typical day on safari can be as varied as the topography, with surprises around every corner.

The Migration

Since 1989 we have flown on the warm coastal winds that feed the richly nutritious grass plains of the south with ash from volcanoes. This is where animals in their millions choose to have their young. Much of the attention is on this, “the largest ungulate migration on earth” and indeed the sight of hundreds of thousands of wildebeest, Thomson's gazelle and zebra in synchrony, driven by the common instincts to seek food and reproduce, is something that is hard to crystallise into words. It is about the vast scale of nature and yet it is also the story of each individual as it traces its journey across the grassland towards that far horizon. The wildebeest migration is a year round phenomenon, but you have to be in the right place at the right time to see it.

So much more

So much, and yet so much more if you look a little closer. A vulture sheltering a single marble-white egg in an acacia-top eyrie. The broad, twitching ears and masked-face of a bat-eared fox crouching in the warm early morning sun. Ambling groups of elephant pacing along the riverbank, pausing to feed or to bath in the muddy shallows. Beyond the grand spectacle of the wildebeest migration there are constant small vignettes as wild animals go about their own lives and we have the privilege to observe them and be part of the scene. Amongst the many things to see on safari are the interactions between the wildlife and their environment; ecology played out in front of your very eyes.

Conservation

We are proud to be part of the ongoing efforts to conserve this remarkable part of our heritage, and our future. We support the critical anti-poaching work of the Frankfurt Zoological Society. Bernhard Gzrimek (President of FZS for over 40 years) was instrumental in the formation of the Serengeti back in the 1950s and the organisation maintains his commitment to the Park to this day. We also feel that it is through education that adjacent communities will know the importance, and feel the value of, conservation and to this end we support specific projects at the Robanda Secondary School through Focus on Tanzanian Communities (FoTZC). A Tanzanian safari directly contributes to the sustainability of this great eco-system, and to the engagement of its people in managing it for future generations.

More about: Ndutu

This area of southern Serengeti is where the gently rolling short-grass plains meet the vast sky at the far horizon. Humbling spaces, ever shifting arrangements of light, cloud and wildlife on an epic scale make this ideal ballooning country. A million wildebeest amass to feed on grass made rich by the volcanic ash that settles here on warm coastal winds, and remain to bear their young. From above, the patterns of the herds as they spread and regroup can be mesmerizing and you can see for miles – from the Ngorongoro Highlands and Gol Mountains right across the endless plains of the greater Serengeti. Predators too are always present here, and a cohort of herbivores and birds, great and small, all playing their own roles in this vital ecosystem.

More about: Central Serengeti

The waters of the Seronera River, along which our flight path most often lies, feeds the Central Serengeti and its resident wildlife. The year-round water and grazing means a dependable game experience, where crocodile and great pods of hippo bask in the shallows and fish eagles glide between the acacia trees on the banks. Lion are regular visitors here as is the odd leopard, draped soporifically over a gnarly bough. The migration of wildebeest and zebra moves through here in search of fresh grazing between March and June, dispersing and re-grouping as they wend their way gently north. They return in November & December on their way to breed in the south. Whether viewing the action from just above the treetops or from 500 feet above, the feeling of being in a balloon is one of unbounded freedom.

More about: Western Serengeti

A unique ecosystem defined by an ancient pocket of Central African forest and the Grumeti River makes for an extraordinary balloon flight. On a clear day, it is possible to spot a ship on the inland sea of Lake Victoria 20miles (30km) away while floating several hundred feet above the Serengeti. On the ground below reside unusual birds, colobus monkeys, some of the largest crocodiles you’ll ever have the pleasure of meeting, and a good concentration of giraffe, elephant, topi and lion to mention but a few. It is a quieter area of the Serengeti with very much its own particular flavour. During May to July, the wildebeest migration must cross the river, weaving between the giant crocs and trying to avoid the predators on the banks. It makes for exciting viewing.

More about: Northern Serengeti

Between June/July and November, a million and a half ungulates arrive to feed on the rain-fed grass of the northern plains around the Mara River near the border between Tanzania and Kenya. They cloud-chase back and forth, seeking the most succulent grazing, braving the crocodiles that lie in wait in the river and the lion, cheetah, leopard and hyena that prowl the wooded streambeds. Lone acacias and mesa-topped hills dot the waving grassy plains of this quintessentially African landscape. It’s a beautiful area to soar above with plenty to see and photograph. Untethered by roads, it’s possible to escape some of the more popular areas and enjoy the peace of the endless skies, making ballooning one of the most rewarding activities on safari in the Serengeti.

Here’s a quick breakdown:

How to Experience a Serengeti Balloon Safari

Where to have a balloon safari in the serengeti, what to expect from a balloon safari in the serengeti, what to bring on a hot air balloon safari, when should you book your serengeti balloon flight, continue the safari afterwards.

Serengeti National Park offers a unique and exhilarating experience with its Balloon Safari.

From the vantage point of a hot air balloon, you can admire the vast beauty of the Serengeti grasslands and get a whole new perspective on the park’s abundant wildlife.

This is a truly remarkable adventure.

Begin your day at dawn with a one-hour flight (weather permitting), where you will see wildlife and migration from above and below as you soar over the vast savannah. Upon landing, enjoy a warm welcome with champagne and an exquisite breakfast in the wilderness. Then, head back to your hotel for an exciting game drive.

The hot air balloons are usually available in the Ndutu area between December 20 and March 31, while they operate in the North Serengeti from July 1 to October 31.

You’ll normally take off at around 6:30am and return to camp by 9:30am to continue your safari experience. This activity is suitable for individuals aged seven years or older who are reasonably mobile, physically fit enough to fly and have a sense of adventure. Please note that weight restrictions may apply.

Serengeti Balloon Safari going over hippos in Tanzania

Going on a balloon safari in Africa can be quite expensive, but let me tell you, it is absolutely worth every penny spent on this incredible adventure in the sky!

There are several designated spots in the Serengeti where you can take your balloon safari . The best location for this exclusive airborne wildlife viewing experience depends on factors such as the abundance of animals in a particular area of the Serengeti National Park, the proximity of your lodge or hotel, and your choice of balloon operator.

The central part of the Serengeti offers an impressive array of wildlife, including wildebeest, elephants, giraffes, zebras, and boasts one of the highest concentrations of big cats in the park.

Kogatende is often compared to Switzerland due to its picturesque landscape , which resembles the rolling hills of that country.

It’s no wonder it’s called “the Serengeti,” as its terrain closely resembles that iconic African national park, with its vast plains and the breathtaking Mara River running through it. This region also happens to be one of one of the few places where you can witness firsthand the awe-inspiring phenomenon of the Great Migration from July to November.

However, if you plan your visit between May and July, Togoro becomes an excellent place to observe this remarkable event known as the Great Migration.

Each year in East Africa’s Serengeti-Mara Ecosystem, a stunning natural spectacle called the “Great Migration” occurs. Millions of wildebeest, zebras, and other hoofed animals migrate through these lands. And guess what? Togoro is often referred to as the “Golden Plains of the Serengeti” due to its picturesque landscape of acacia and sausage trees.

Once you’ve booked your Serengeti balloon safari, one of our team members will provide you with important details about your early morning pick-up, what to wear, and what to expect during this extraordinary adventure. This informative briefing usually takes place at your lodge the evening before your Serengeti Balloon Safari.

Hot Air Balloon Safari over the majestic Serengeti.

You will have to get up early, as sometimes it’s a 30-60-minute drive to get to the starting point. But when you arrive at the starting point, the staff will warmly greet you.

Although it’s still dark outside, the sky is turning a stunning shade of purple. While the team prepares the balloon for flight, you can enjoy a comforting cup of tea or coffee and a delicious biscuit. The hot air balloon is heated to provide the necessary lift for flight, while ropes hold the basket in place.

Just before takeoff, there is a brief safety briefing and harness demonstration. The crew will instruct you on positioning yourself in the basket and what to expect during the ride. Once everything is set up and ready to go, you are free to enter the basket and “fasten your seatbelt”.

Good to know: Since the balloon moves with the wind rather than rocking on its own, motion sickness is not an issue.

Usually, the hot air balloons have enough space and are divided into four compartments for a total of 12 to 16 guests, ensuring increased safety and plenty of room for everyone, as well as breathtaking views!

Once all passengers are settled inside, the experienced pilot is ready for takeoff!

He’ll gently warm up the balloon until it rises gracefully into the air, where you’ll soon witness an incredible sunrise that perfectly illuminates the Serengeti plains.

It is truly an exhilarating yet serene experience! As you float over the vast Serengeti landscapes in this hovering vessel, there is no turbulence or loud engine noise to disturb this atmosphere; just you (and a dozen other guests) enjoying this bird’s eye view of the animals below, along with the captivating sunrise ahead.

During a balloon safari in the Serengeti, there is an abundance of wildlife to observe. With a little luck, you may see a pride of lions, graceful giraffes, a majestic procession of elephants crossing the vast plains, diverse hyenas, vibrant birds and numerous species of plains game, including wildebeest, topi, zebra and other antelopes.

The altitude during the flight varies from controlled heights of about 300 meters above ground level to skimming the treetops for panoramic views of the Serengeti terrain. On average, flights last approximately one hour, but depending on weather conditions and finding suitable landing sites, flights may be slightly longer or shorter than 60 minutes. It’s worth noting that any flights over 40 minutes will be charged at full price.

The opportunity to view the Serengeti from above is truly unforgettable and will leave you with a lasting impression.

What items should you include on your packing list for a Serengeti balloon safari adventure? It is highly recommended that you dress appropriately for the safari experience. This includes comfortable footwear and a lightweight windproof jacket or sweater for the cooler mornings.

Don’t forget to pack a hat and sunscreen to protect yourself from the sun’s rays. While wearing a hat may not be ideal during the balloon ride itself, it will come in handy during the delicious bush breakfasts.

Speaking of which, bush breakfasts are an absolute must on an African safari . They offer an incredible opportunity to enjoy delicious food amidst the breathtaking scenery of the vast Serengeti plains.

Also, be sure to bring binoculars so you can get up close and personal with wildlife and capture amazing moments with your smartphone or camera . The Serengeti offers countless opportunities for video and photography from high above in a hot air balloon! Maybe you want to take a small camera bag with personal belongings with you, which you can secure to the bottom of the basket. But keep in mind, that there isn’t much room on board to store bags on the floor during the flight, so choose wisely what you bring.

You might expect the morning to be chilly as you float high in the sky, but you’ll be pleasantly surprised to find it’s not cold! The hot air balloon glides effortlessly with the wind, eliminating the possibility of a chilly breeze. In addition, the balloon itself is “heated,” which guarantees a comforting warmth that envelops you.

As you rise above the magnificent Serengeti plains, the surrounding air also gradually warms. So there’s no need to bundle up.

When is the best time to book your hot air balloon adventure in the Serengeti? It’s highly recommended that you secure your spot in the Serengeti skies as soon as you confirm your visit. Ballooning is incredibly popular, and availability is limited. We recommend booking early to ensure a smooth experience.

Continue your morning with another game-viewing session. You could have lunch in nature and return in the late evening to enjoy a leisurely African dinner.

The following day, after breakfast, you continue with a Game drive in Ndutu plains – famous worldwide as it hosts one of the largest mammal migrations. Witnessing over 400,000 calves being born during peak season is awe-inspiring!

You will have delightful morning and afternoon game drives across endless Serengeti plains, which are home to an extraordinary concentration of wildlife, including wildebeest herds, zebras, gazelles, lions lounging in acacia trees…the list goes on! The Serengeti plains boast all members of Africa’s Big Five and millions of zebras, birds, and other predators.

Serengeti National Park is famous for its vast herds of plains animals such as wildebeests, gazelles, and zebras. It remains the only place in Africa where large-scale land-animal migrations still occur. This park has become an international tourist attraction and was recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage site in 1981. As for the lack of trees in the Serengeti, it’s mostly endless plains; however, there are some “sausage trees” that elephants and giraffes feed on.

Note that the park faces several management concerns, including poaching, tourism impact, wildfires, and inadequate resource monitoring capacity. Water scarcity is another significant challenge due to having only one perennial river (Mara) spanning borders.

Various factors threaten the ecosystem of Serengeti National Park, such as industrialization, human population growth, farming, and poaching – endangering both wildlife species and local communities residing near the park boundaries. Human-wildlife conflicts, population increase, poverty, and unsustainable development projects also contribute to these challenges.

Balloon Safari In Serengeti: Is It Worth It?

The Serengeti is a marvel of nature featuring prominently on several travelers’ bucket lists. It is most famous for its wondrous array of wildlife, stunning landscapes, and enchanting lakes — a true jewel of Africa! Spanning a massive 30,000 square kilometers, there’s so much to see and do that it will take several trips to be able to capture all that it has to offer unless of course, you have the ultimate vantage point — the air! That’s what a balloon safari in Serengeti delivers and there is simply a no better or more exhilarating way to see Africa’s incredible landscapes and animals.

It is an experience of a lifetime as you rise with the sun and gently bob through the air in whichever direction the winds of the morning take you. It is a spellbinding scene as you witness herds of wildebeest, towers of giraffe, or a pride of lions running across the plains of the Serengeti just a few hundred meters below and your eye darting to every possible corner, euphoric on adrenalin and gasps of “wow” and “ohhh” are the only words you can muster. Definitely worth it as it is one of those trips that you will remember for all time.

How Does It Work?

There are several hot air balloon safari companies, but it is still advisable to pre-book this popular activity for your Serengeti safari holiday. This activity cannot be organized on the day and due to the reliance on favorable weather, it is not on offer throughout the year. Price per person is around 500 to 600 USD, which covers the ride, a champagne toast after the landing, and a delicious bush breakfast with options for vegan/ vegetarians.

The price reflects the relatively high cost of maintaining and servicing the balloons as well as the rest of the pre and post-launch activities, including launching and recovery as well as the road transport to and from the launch site. Each trip also requires a licensed pilot and a formidable team of around 20. Keep in mind, also, that because the weight of the balloon is a crucial safety consideration, passengers who weigh over 120 kilos (265 pounds) may need to reserve two places.

As such, it might be too pricey for budget and standard travelers, but if it is within your means, the feeling you’ll get when you are up there and looking down at the incredible scene below is priceless. So yes, it’s 100% worth it. The balloons are huge and the compartmented comfy baskets can accommodate from around 8 to 16 people for each voyage depending on the size. At this time, only children over seven years old are allowed on the trip and they must be accompanied by an adult.

What to Expect

Balloon Safari In Serengeti: Is It Worth It?

There is a pre-launch safety briefing from the pilot while the balloon is being inflated. Flight time is approximately 1 hour and the balloon can ascend up to 1000 ft exposing the vast magnificence and spectacular panorama of the Serengeti below. The pilot can precisely control the altitude of your balloon, sometimes flying at treetop height so you can see individual animals at close quarters.

Upon landing, you will be welcomed with a champagne reception toasting to “maisha marefu”, which translates to “long life”. After that a splendid bush breakfast in the middle of the Serengeti awaits, capping off what is sure to be one of the most thrilling experiences ever.

Balloon flight locations in Serengeti, Tanzania

Where does the hot air balloon fly in Serengeti? There are several set locations in Serengeti to start your balloon safari . The best location for this exclusive game-viewing activity from the sky depends on the density of wildlife in a certain area of Serengeti National Park, the location of your safari lodge or hotel , and the ballooning operator you choose to go with.

We did our hot air balloon safari in Serengeti with Adventures Aloft Balloon Safaris . Because of our location at the amazing Pamoja Serengeti Luxury Camp , we started near Seronera in Central Serengeti, 5 kilometers from the Visitors Centre.

Central Serengeti offers a great diversity of wildlife including wildebeests, elephants, giraffes, zebras, and the highest concentration of large predators in Serengeti.

For over 25 years, Adventures Aloft is one of East Africa's most experienced balloon operators with operations in the Masai Mara in Kenya , Tarangire National Park, Ngorongoro Crater, and three locations in Serengeti National Park. Apart from a balloon location near Seronera , they also have a starting point in Northern Serengeti in Kogatende and in Togoro in Central Serengeti.

Adventures Aloft was the first balloon company flying in the Kogatende area in Northern Serengeti. Kogatende is often referred to as the Switzerland of Serengeti, because of the landscape with hills and the majestic Mara River flowing through the area. This is also the place where the great wildebeest migration can be witnessed between July and November. Between May and July, the Togoro area is a great place to see the great migration as well. Togoro is known as the ‘golden plains of the Serengeti’ dotted with Acacia and Sausage trees.

What to bring on a hot air balloon safari in Serengeti | Pre-briefing?

After booking your hot air balloon safari, a staff member will explain some important information about your pick-up in the early morning, what to wear and what to expect. We had this pre-briefing at the Seronera visitor center in Central Serengeti one day before the balloon safari. Most of the time, this pre-briefing takes place at your lodge in the evening before you’re going for your Serengeti balloon safari.

Pamoja Serengeti Luxury Camp in Central Serengeti

What to pack for your balloon safari? It’s recommended to wear safari clothing and comfortable shoes. Bring a light windproof jacket or sweater for the cold mornings. To protect yourself from the sun, it’s a good idea to bring a hat and sunscreen . For the balloon flight , it might not be the best idea to wear a hat, but you will be happy with it during the bush breakfast on the Serengeti plains.

Don't forget a pair of binoculars to have a closer look at the wildlife and birdlife. Also bring your smartphone and/or a camera . There's so much to video and photograph in Serengeti from a hot air balloon! I took a small camera bag including some personal belongings and stored it at the bottom of the basket. However, be mindful of what you bring on the balloon flight as there's not too much space to store bags on the floor.

Serengeti Hot Air Balloon ride

I thought it would be cold in the morning, high up in the air. However, it wasn't cold at all! The hot air balloon floats with the wind so there is no wind chill. Apart from that, the balloon gets heated, so you will definitely feel that warmth. As you climb over the Serengeti the air also warms up. Therefore, there is no need to wear too many layers .

In this pre-briefing , Adventures Aloft will also communicate the exact pick-up time at the lodge. Be prepared to get up (very) early, because the hot air balloon safari in Serengeti starts before sunrise!

Balloon Safari in Serengeti before sunrise

Balloon ride pick-up and transfer

Your balloon adventure starts before dawn, meaning you will depart from your lodge between 04.00 and 05.00 in the morning . Aloft Adventures arranges pick-up and transfers from most camps in Serengeti National Park. In the very dark, you will be picked up by a driver who will safely take you to the starting point of the balloon safari.

Sunrise over the Serengeti plains

There's something special about waking up under a sky full of stars and watching the Serengeti come to life . Our drive took about 45 minutes, witnessing the first light in the form of a purple sky. When you’re lucky, you might see some animals en route. We for example saw a lion and a hyena along the road which was very exciting.

Coffee, tea, and safety briefing

As soon as you arrive at the starting point, you're welcomed by the staff. It's still dark at that point, but the sky is already turning into beautiful purple colors. While the staff is preparing the balloon for the flight, you can enjoy a warm cup of tea or coffee with a cookie. The hot air balloon gets heated to give it the much-needed lift to fly. The crew holds the basket with ropes while the balloon is getting filled with more hot air.

Heating the hot air balloon in Serengeti

Shortly before departure, you will receive simple safety instructions with a safety belt . The staff will tell you how to position yourself in the basket and what to expect during the flight. When the balloon is ready for departure, you can enter the basket and secure your belt to the basket. The basket doesn't sway because it moves with the wind, so you don't have to worry about motion sickness.

Take-off balloon ride over Serengeti plains

Each hot air balloon can carry 12 to 16 guests , divided into four compartments. This allows extra safety in the basket, everyone will have enough space, and lovely views are guaranteed! We were 3 persons in each compartment, meaning we had a total of 12 guests.

Experience the majestic Serengeti from the sky

When everyone has entered the basket, the balloon pilot is ready for take-off! Your pilot will heat the hot air balloon, and it will smoothly lift in the air. After take-off, you will soon witness a perfect sunrise over the Serengeti plains .

Sunrise Balloon Safari Serengeti

It’s such an exciting and peaceful experience, I loved it! Because the balloon floats with the find there is no turbulence and you won't hear a loud motor. It's just you and the hot air balloon drifting over the sweeping Serengeti plains, with a birds-eye view of the animals beneath you and the sunrise in front of you.

Serengeti Balloon Safari at sunrise

The flying altitudes, controlled by the pilot, vary between 300 meters above the ground and skimming treetops for a panoramic view of the Serengeti. The average flight lasts about one hour. Depending on the weather conditions and finding a place for landing it can take a bit longer or less than 60 minutes. All flights of 40+ minutes are charged as full.

You can see many animals on a balloon safari in Serengeti. Pop the champagne!

After enjoying the Serengeti plains for about an hour from a birds-eye view, the pilot searches for an open space suitable for landing and makes a landing announcement to get ready for the descent. For landing, everyone has to face in the same direction and sit on the bottom of the basket. If you follow those rules, a smooth landing is assured.

Champagne Celebration with Adventures Aloft Balloon Safaris

During the balloon flight, the pilot stayed in touch with other staff members of Adventures Aloft, that were ready to assist at the landing spot. After getting out of the basket, our experienced pilot popped the champagne to celebrate a fantastic flight experience over the magical Serengeti. After the toast, the driver took us to a beautiful set-up breakfast site in the middle of the Serengeti plains.

Known for its vast savannahs, the park is home to the great wildebeest migration and diverse wildlife. This comprehensive guide will lead you through the best experiences Serengeti has to offer, providing insider tips to enhance your journey.

The Serengeti National Park in Tanzania is a wildlife photographer’s dream. Its vast, open plains are home to an incredible array of wildlife, including the Big Five. The Great Migration, featuring millions of wildebeest and zebras, offers dramatic scenes for photography. In the Serengeti, you’re not just capturing images; you’re witnessing and recording nature’s raw beauty and drama. The key here is patience and respect for the wildlife, ensuring your presence doesn’t disrupt their natural behavior.

Insider’s Tip: Use a long lens to keep a respectful distance from the animals.

When To Travel: June to October for the migration; January to February for the calving season.

How To Get There: Fly into Kilimanjaro International Airport and take a smaller plane or a safari vehicle to the park.

1. The Great Wildebeest Migration

The Great Wildebeest Migration in the Serengeti is an awe-inspiring natural phenomenon, marking one of the most significant wildlife events on the planet. Over a million wildebeest, alongside zebras and gazelles, embark on a relentless journey through the Serengeti ecosystem, driven by ancient instincts to find fresh grazing and water.

This migration is characterized by its sheer scale and the dramatic challenges the migrating herds face, particularly during perilous river crossings where aquatic and terrestrial predators lurk. Witnessing this event provides a profound insight into the unscripted drama of the natural world. As an observer, you are privy to moments of triumph and tragedy, encapsulating the raw essence of survival in the African wilderness.

Insider’s Tip: Opt for a hot-air balloon ride for an unparalleled aerial view of the migration.

When to Travel: The migration is year-round, but river crossings typically occur between July and September.

How to Get There: Fly to Kilimanjaro International Airport, then a domestic flight to Seronera Airstrip in the Serengeti.

The Serengeti is a stronghold for Africa’s most iconic predators. This vast landscape is a prime setting for observing lions, leopards, cheetahs, and hyenas in their natural habitat. The region of Seronera, in particular, is celebrated for its exceptional predator sightings. Here, you can observe the dynamics of lion prides, the stealth of leopards, and the strategic hunting techniques of cheetahs.

Witnessing these predators in action, whether during a hunt or nurturing their young, offers an unfiltered glimpse into their complex lives. 2. Predators of the Serengeti

The experience is about the thrill of the sighting and understanding the role these apex predators play in maintaining the ecological balance of the Serengeti.

Insider’s Tip: Early morning game drives offer the best chance to see predators in action.

When to Travel: The dry season (June to October) is best for visibility year-round.

How to Get There: Access is through the Seronera Airstrip, with game drives organized by local lodges.

The Ngorongoro Crater offers a once-in-a-lifetime safari experience. As you descend into the world’s largest inactive, intact, and unfilled volcanic caldera, you’ll find an abundance of wildlife in this natural amphitheater. The crater floor is home to over 25,000 animals, including the endangered black rhino. Early morning visits allow for fewer crowds and more active wildlife.

Insider’s Tip: Visit the crater early in the morning to avoid crowds.

When To Travel: June to September for cooler weather and optimal wildlife viewing.

How To Get There: Fly to Kilimanjaro Airport, then drive or take a local flight.

3. Ngorongoro Crater Conservation Area

Adjacent to the Serengeti lies the Ngorongoro Crater, a breathtaking natural wonder. This massive volcanic caldera forms a distinct ecosystem with diverse habitats. It’s home to a dense concentration of wildlife, including the elusive black rhino, herds of wildebeest, zebra, and a healthy population of lions.

The crater floor, with its verdant plains, acacia forests, and soda lakes, offers an unparalleled safari experience. The Ngorongoro Crater is a wildlife retreat and a porthole into the geological history of the Earth, its towering walls providing a backdrop of dramatic landscapes that are both ancient and ever-changing.

Insider’s Tip: Visit in the early morning to avoid crowds and spot nocturnal animals returning from hunting.

When to Travel: Year-round; however, the dry season provides better wildlife viewing.

How to Get There: Drive from Arusha or fly to Lake Manyara Airstrip, followed by a drive to the crater.

Mastering lighting is crucial in travel photography. The best natural light is typically during the golden hours — shortly after sunrise or before sunset—when the light is soft and warm. Harsh midday sun can create strong shadows and overexposed spots.

Learn to work with available light by adjusting camera settings or using techniques like backlighting to create dramatic effects. In low-light conditions, a tripod can be invaluable to stabilize your shot and avoid blurriness.

Insider’s Tip: Use a reflector or even a simple white sheet to bounce light onto your subject for better illumination.

4. Birdwatching in the Serengeti

For bird enthusiasts, the Serengeti offers an avian paradise. The park is a habitat for over 500 bird species, ranging from the commonly seen African fish eagles and vultures to the more elusive species like the Kori bustard and Secretary bird. The varied ecosystems within the park – from savannahs to riverine forests – create ideal conditions for birdwatching.

Each area within the Serengeti offers a different birding experience, whether observing migratory birds around the wetlands or spotting endemic species in the dense foliage. The experience is as educational as it is delightful, providing a deeper understanding of avian life and its crucial role in the ecosystem.

Insider’s Tip: Bring a high-quality zoom lens for bird photography.

When to Travel: November to April, during the migratory season.

How to Get There: Fly to Seronera Airstrip and arrange guided birdwatching tours through your lodge.

In Kenya, community-based tourism takes a front seat in wildlife conservation efforts. Projects like the Maasai Mara Wildlife Conservancies involve local communities in protecting the region’s iconic wildlife. As a visitor, you can participate in guided safaris led by local Maasai guides who share their in-depth knowledge of the ecosystem.

Your visit contributes to the conservancies’ efforts to protect species like lions, elephants, and rhinos. Additionally, many of these projects offer cultural experiences, such as village visits and traditional dance performances, providing a holistic understanding of the Maasai community’s way of life.

Insider’s Tip: Opt for lodges or camps that are part of the conservancy program, ensuring your stay directly benefits local conservation efforts.

5. Maasai Cultural Experience

The Maasai people, with their rich cultural heritage, have been an integral part of the Serengeti landscape for centuries. Engaging with the Maasai offers a unique cultural immersion. Visits to Maasai villages allow you to witness their traditional way of life, unchanged for generations.

Participating in a Maasai dance, learning about their pastoral lifestyle, and observing their skilled beadwork provide a rare glimpse into a culture deeply connected to the land and its wildlife. This cultural exchange is about observing and understanding and respecting a way of life that has coexisted with Africa’s wildlife in a delicate balance.
