Why Rent a Camper Van?

Renting a camper van can provide an elevated road trip experience by pairing some of the comforts of home with the freedom of the open road.

With a camper van, you’ll have everything you need with you including a bed, kitchen, indoor seating space, and in some cases, even a bathroom. There’s no need to set up camp and pitch a tent every night, so you’ll have the flexibility to camp in more places and will be able to move around more easily.

Plus, depending on where you want to travel, daily rental fees may be cheaper than a hotel room, and you can also save by cooking your own meals since most rental camper vans come with a sink, cooking equipment, fridge (or at least a cooler), and a stove.

Many people also rent a camper van to give van life a try before diving in and committing to buying a van themselves. It’s also a great way to test out a certain type of camper van model and layout to see if it’s the right fit for you.

Considerations for Renting a Campervan

With the growing popularity of van life, there are a growing number of camper van rental companies out there offering campervan rentals of all types for all budgets. That means you’ve got a good chance of finding a campervan rental at the right price for you.

Base pricing generally includes a certain number of daily miles (usually starting at 100 miles/day included, sometimes more) with an additional cost per mile if you go over.

Camper van rental companies often provide basics like bedding, camp chairs, a camp table, and cooking supplies although this varies and may not be included in some of the more budget campervan rentals. Most camper van rental companies also offer add-ons for an extra fee such as portable toilets, rooftop tents, and bike racks.

Be aware that you may need to pay a deposit and cleaning fee in addition to the rental fee, so be sure to read the company’s FAQs or discuss this with them before booking.

Seating & Sleeping Space

You’ll want to make sure the rental camper van you’re looking at can safely seat and sleep the number of people that you’ll be road tripping with. For example, some campervans have bench seating in the back, but these seats don’t always have seatbelts and aren’t meant to be used while driving.

Some campervan rentals offer a rooftop tent in addition to indoor sleeping space so you can have two separate sleeping areas. And some rental companies offer an add-on camping tent you can pitch if you need more sleeping space as well.

Some camper van rental companies include a variety of amenities in their rental fee, and some offer them as add-ons for an additional fee . Make sure you’re clear on what’s included in the price so you can plan accordingly.

From a fully stocked kitchen with a stove, cookware, and dishes to camp chairs, an outdoor table, and bedding, some camper van rentals come with all the amenities you need to cook and relax on your road trip.

On the other hand, some budget rental campervans are a little more bare bones so you’ll need to bring camping, cooking, and sleeping supplies with you.

You generally pay for what you get, so if you need the convenience of having all the amenities supplied (for example, if you’re flying to your destination and you don’t want to deal with bringing everything with you), then you’ll want to look for a campervan rental company who provides everything you need.

If you’ll be picking up a camper van near home and can load it up with everything you need for your trip, you can likely save some money by bringing your own gear.

Bathroom Facilities

Some camper van rentals come complete with a shower and toilet (usually a porta potty), and some don’t. If a bathroom is a must for you, make sure this is something you look for when searching for rentals, but be aware you’ll likely pay a little more as well.

If you plan to camp at campgrounds where bathrooms and showers are readily available, you can likely go without these luxuries and save some money. And if you plan on finding free campsites without facilities, you can likely get by with a portable shower and portable toilet system if you don’t mind roughing it a little.

We’ve noticed that most camper van rental companies will allow dogs for an additional fee , although there is one company on our list below that lets dogs join the adventure for free, and there are a few who don’t allow them at all.

Be sure to look into this before booking if you plan on road tripping with your dog .

Age Requirements

You must be at least 21 years old to rent an RV or camper van in the US .

Many campervan rental companies charge an additional fee for drivers who are under the age of 25 due to additional insurance costs.

When looking into renting a camper van, you’ll want to look into insurance requirements and pricing as well. Some camper van rental companies include insurance in their daily rates, while some add on an additional daily fee for insurance .

Most camper van rental companies do not allow you to be covered by your personal auto policy or credit card for campervan rentals . This is because most basic auto policies do not cover campervans that are classified as Class B RVs. Be sure to check with your insurance company prior to booking a campervan rental and ask specifically if your policy includes Class B RV coverage.

One Way Campervan Rentals

Depending on your road trip plans, you may want to start in one location and end in another to make the most of your time and avoid backtracking. If that’s the case, check with the campervan rental company to see if they charge an additional fee for one-way rentals.

In some cases, we’ve seen rental companies offer discounts on certain one way routes when they need a van transported from one location to another – that’s something to look out for as well.

Peer-to-Peer Camper Van Rentals

With the rising popularity of van life, there are now a handful of peer-to-peer campervan rental companies where people rent out their own campervans – kind of like Airbnb but for camper van rentals. This allows owners to earn extra income by renting out their campervans when they’re not using them, and it gives travelers the chance to pick from a variety of campervan models, layouts, and interior designs.

These peer-to-peer campervan rental sites allow you to easily search for campervans available in your area or in the area you plan on traveling to.

How Much Does a Camper Van Rental Cost?

Camper van rentals can cost anywhere from $33 per day to upwards of $500 per day . Those rates often don’t include insurance or additional amenities you may want for your road trip. But the good news is, there are budget camper van rentals available if that’s what you’re looking for.

Mercedes Sprinter RV Rental

Campervan North America offers 5 different camper van models to choose from, including a converted Dodge Promaster, Mercedes Sprinter, and Ford Transit. Many of their vans were purchased new and then converted so they’re peppier and have lower miles than some other options you might find.

Their vans sleep up to 5 people depending on the model. The interiors are clean and simple; some models have kitchens and baths and some don’t. During the high season, they have a 7-night minimum and a 4-night minimum rental for the rest of the year. Rates start at $100/night although they offer discounts for rental periods longer than 15 days.

VanCraft Sprinter Campervan Rentals

The dinette transforms into a queen-size bed that sleeps 2-3 people, and if you need room for more, they’ll add on a rooftop tent. Pricing starts at $99/night with a minimum of three nights. During the high season, the prices will be about twice as much. If you’re looking for a San Francisco camper van rental company right near the airport, this is a great choice.

Many campervan and RV rental companies will offer discounts for long-term rentals. I recommend reaching out to some companies and asking what discounts they can offer you for a 6+ month rental.

Would it be cheapest to rent a cargo van from Hertz, Avis, Enterprise, or some other company for a few weeks and turn it into a temporary camper?

You can always buy an inflatable mattress, manual pump, camping stove, styrofoam cooler, cheap pillow, and maybe some cheap black out material that you can tape to the windows at night.

When done, you can mail the camping stove (minus the fuel), mattress, the pump, and tape back to your residence.

Hi Rob, I think many people like the ease & luxuries that come with renting an already built-out van, but your idea is definitely a possibility. Another option to save money is to look at one-way campervan relocations – they are usually last minute and you have to find your way home, but one of our team members has traveled this way before and loved it.

It’s nice to see these resources are available, but there are none for where I live. Not much in the way for Missouri I guess, and having lived here 95% of my life so far, I can say that the landscape is beautiful here (the people not so much lol). Maybe someday there will be a van rental place available here, but I’m not going to hold my breath.

How to rent a campervan for your next road trip

Campervans help bridge the gap between car camping and RVing, and rentals offer an easy introduction to the lifestyle

For Harley Sitner of Peace Vans , van travel means “optimizing magic over efficiency.” His advice? “The first day is going to be a (madhouse), where you don’t know what to do or how things operate. Just stick it out. The second day gets easier, and the third gets easier yet. After the fourth night, most people are already looking for their own van.”

If you’re renting a camper van for the first time, it can all be a bit overwhelming. Luckily, there are plenty of options and resources to help you get started.

What to expect

Gas prices might be rising , but the cost of renting vans has remained relatively stable, according to April Cumming, a public relations manager at the peer-to-peer RV rental platform Outdoorsy . Many renters try to stay somewhat local, maybe going to two or three different parks over the course of their vacation, and they may not even go through an entire tank of gas on their trip.  

You can generally expect to pay between $100 and $350 per night for a van rental, which includes 100 to 150 miles per day of driving. From there, fees typically run between 25 and 50 cents per mile. Most companies also charge a cleaning fee at the end of the trip. Most companies have a 3- to 5-night rental minimum.

Be sure to look for what accessories are included. Many van rental companies include basic essentials such as pots, pans, dishes, linens, and more, but others might charge an additional fee.

If you feel overwhelmed with the number of choices, Moterra Campervan s and some other companies will prepare your entire itinerary for you (for a fee, of course). Peace Vans offers deals with several local campgrounds that reserve spots just for customers.

Where to look

Renters can choose between standard rental outfitters like Moterra or Peace Vans, or peer-to-peer rental companies like Outdoorsy, RVshare , RVezy , or Vancation . 

Specialty van rental companies like Moterra, Voyager , Peace Vans, and others have newer, fairly standard vans. Voyager builds out each of its vans while Peace Vans offers a vintage VW fleet, so you know exactly what you’re getting. If you plan a long itinerary and rent from a company with multiple locations, you can save time by flying into and out of different airports.

Peer-to-peer rental companies give you more options, allowing you to rent a van as basic or as luxurious as you need, but the service you receive from the actual RV owners can vary. Cumming says the company will step in if needed; if the van breaks down or another unexpected mishap occurs during your trip, they’ll do whatever they can to get you back on the road safely.

Ask the rental agent or owner to walk you through the features. Don’t assume you know how everything operates, especially if it’s your first time. Pay attention, but don’t stress over knowing how every little thing works. Nearly every van rental company has robust training materials online, and Voyager even places QR codes next to the van’s most confusing buttons and gadgets, allowing you to pull up a troubleshooting article or video immediately. If you need additional help, many companies have a 24/7 hotline.

While you’re there, don’t hesitate to ask the rental agent questions, not just about your van, but also about your destination(s). Moterra’s Trevor James says most employees love sharing their favorite destinations, and the company gives lists of campgrounds and outdoor activities to every renter. 

Driving a van

If renting a van and visiting a far-off destination is on your bucket list, Cumming suggests doing a shorter trip closer to home first to get a feel for the van and how to best travel in it.

Some travelers may be intimidated by driving a large Sprinter van, especially if they’ve never driven anything that big before, but James says the nerves usually go away after the first day. Modern vans have plenty of safety features, including blindspot alerts and backup cameras, that make piloting the van a piece of cake. 

If you’re driving a tall van, consider using an RV GPS (like Roadtrippers Premium ) that will navigate you away from low bridges and tight tunnels. Likewise, avoid parking garages and drive-throughs with low barriers. When it comes to driving speed, remember that a lead foot leads to buying more unleaded gas.

Getting to the campground

If you’re new to the outdoors, stick to established campgrounds until you feel more comfortable. Campground reservations tend to go fast these days, so book as early as possible. After you gain more experience, dispersed camping in national forests and Bureau of Land Management areas are a great way to save money and experience lesser-known parks.

Most renters fret about whether to splurge on a van with a toilet or shower. If you plan to stay at an established campground, both Voyager’s Grady Linder and Vancation’s Steve Dietrich suggest forgoing both . Dietrich says some owners on Vancation will include a disposable, portable toilet in case of emergencies. For those who are venturing off-grid, a toilet may be worth the splurge.

If you’re planning to stay at a campground with hookups, make sure you can plug your RV into the 50- or 30-volt outlet. If you’re planning to forgo hookups, look for a rental option with solar panels that will help keep your devices charged.

Overnighting in a van can take some getting used to. More compact than even the tiniest hotel room, it does take some adjustment, especially if you’re traveling with family or friends, but most of the kinks are usually worked out by the second or third day. Most renters spend the bulk of their time outside, not in the van.

Where Can You Rent a Camper Van? The Best U.S. Van Rentals

Are you ready to rent a van for your road trip but aren’t sure where to start? Between van rental platforms like Outdoorsy and van rental companies across the country, there are A LOT of rental vehicle options!

But that’s the fun part–researching which van will fit all of your needs (and gear). Maybe you like the idea of renting a custom, DIY van from a private owner. Or maybe you’d feel more comfortable in a fleet van rental from a company, so you know exactly what you’re getting.

Once you have those answers, you can start perusing vehicle rental platforms or find a campervan rental company near you. Which leads us to…

Will You Rent Through a Van Rental Platform or Company?

The biggest difference between peer-to-peer van rental platforms vs rental companies is that you’re communicating with the private owner of each van on a rental platform, but communicating with the company if renting from a van rental company.

P2P van rental platforms will have a much more diverse pool of van rentals (with a much bigger price range) than camper van rental companies. Customize depending on your preferred van make and model, amenities, cost, pet-friendliness, nationwide pickup location, and more.

The risk is that the platform only covers basic things such as insurance and tracking your communication with the owner. Everything else is left up to the van owner to decide–so you want to make sure you’re working with a responsible, respectful and communicative van rental host.

A van rental company will have a select rental fleet, with limited options on make and model, amenities and price range. But they’re more likely to have multiple locations if you want to take a one-way road trip. And they’re more likely to offer luxury amenities or unlimited mileage. You can also rest assured knowing their vans are professionally maintained, unlike a private van owner whose word you just have to trust.

Peer-to-Peer Camper Van Rental Platforms

Van rental platforms are the AirBnB of the camper van world. They give you the chance to experience living in any type campervan you can imagine. These platforms allow van owners to rent out their vehicles at their own set prices with their own amenities. Most of these platforms also list rentals from RV dealerships.

Oftentimes, van owners will offer extra camping gear for an additional fee (or for free if they’re really cool). Popular amenities include camping chairs, bike racks, a portable toilet , sleeping bags–basically all the gear you can think of!

Outdoorsy is first on the list because 1) I rent out my van on it so I’m slightly biased and 2) it is the largest platform that’s the most focused on Class B campervan rentals. It offers towable vehicles and Class A and C motorhomes, but it’s best-known for the Class B campervans, such as Ford Transits, ProMasters, Mercedes Sprinters, Chevy Expresses, Ford Econolines, etc.

It’s also the only platform that offers insurance on vehicles 20+ years old, so you can REALLY get that vintage van rental if that’s what you’re looking for. Think old school Volkswagen Vanagons…

RVshare is another popular van rental platform that focuses on Class A, B and C campervans. You can find anything from huge Winnebagos to newer Mercedes Benz Sprinters on RVShare. RVShare and Outdoorsy are similar platforms with slight differences in filtering abilities when van rental hunting. As its name suggests, RVShare has more vehicle listings for big Class A motorhomes or Class C motorhomes, vs. the smaller Class B campervans.

RVezy is another great van or RV rental platform that allows you to search by towable RVs, motorhomes, pet-friendly RVs, deliverables RVs or even stationary RVs. The website even helps you with buying an RV, if you decide to go that route.

Other Camper Van Rental Platforms

There are lots of rental platforms out there! RVnGo lets you filter searches by ADA compliant/wheelchair accessible vans and RVs. HipCamp offers everything from RVs and vans to cabins, campsites, treehouses and glamping. GoCamp prides themselves on only offering high-quality, well-maintained vans that must include all sleeping, eating, cooking and camping amenities.

Where To Find Vacation Van Rentals Near You

I’ve put together a comprehensive list of van rental companies located on both the east and west coasts. Since van life is a lot more popular on the west coast, there are far more van rental companies in the west than in the east. Rental Vans for One-Way Road Trips

A one-way road trip means you pick up the van rental in a different location than you drop it off. One-way road trips are great for those on a tight schedule, who don’t want to lose a day or more just backtracking to their original pickup spot. You’ll also save money on fuel costs and mileage.

But one-way road trip rentals typically include an additional fee and are usually only available between cities with major airports. Most platforms or rental companies that offer one-way road trips only do so between cities within the same state, or neighboring states. Very few offer cross-country options.

Technically, van rental platforms are at the mercy of each private van owner on whether or not they want to offer one-way rentals. The following van rental platforms give you the option, but also make it clear that you have to confirm a one-way rental with the van’s owner.

Their daily rate includes 250 miles per day, more than other services, roadside assistance, complimentary camping supplies, and require no pet fees. Voyager does not yet offer one-way trips between locations, but that feature is coming soon.

If you are near Boise, Idaho, Portland Oregon, or Salt Lake City, Utah Wandervans might be the best service for you. Wandervans rents three different Ford models with excellent gas mileage and a range of sizes. All of Wandervans’ rentals include a kitchen, fridge, chairs, and a shower.

The smaller sizes sleep two people and start at $98 a day, making Wandervan rentals a great value. All rentals include 150 miles of travel per day plus camping gear. Wandervans offers insurance plans on all rentals for your peace of mind.

Jucy Rentals

Jucy Rentals has locations in San Francisco, Las Vegas, and Los Angeles, with rates starting at about $150 a night. What makes Jucy Rentals unique is that they offer fully outfitted “mini-RVs” with lots of amenities and services.

Jucy does not offer personal liability insurance, and the deposits on rentals are 20% of the vehicle’s total rental cost, which is standard. Their rental prices do not include free daily miles, like some services, and 100 miles per night will run the renter $12 per day.

Adventure Travel Sport Rentals

Located in Golden, Colorado (25 miles from Denver), Adventure Travel Sport Rentals offers off-road camper vans and vehicles to explore Colorado’s beautiful terrain. Rentals start at just $125 per night.

Each vehicle from Adventure Travel Sports Rentals is outfitted with different equipment, making it easy for you to find the perfect off-road camper van for your trip. Prices for rental decrease as you increase the duration of your rental, with a three-day minimum.

Roamerica is more than just a clever name; they offer spacious and heavy-duty camper vans for rent in Portland, Oregon, to access the beauty of the Pacific Northwest’s wilderness. Roamerica offers Ford Transits and Ford Econolines with pop-up additions for standing room and room for each camper van to sleep four comfortably.

Rates begin at $260 per night, not including extra mileage fees, insurance, and if the van returns dirty, there will be a cleaning fee. They do all come outfitted with camping equipment to make your trip simple and let you enjoy more of the outdoors.

Basecamper Vans

Basecamper Vans is another small, local rental service based out of Salt Lake City, Utah. Basecamper Vans offers a range of small camper vans that sleep, 2-4 people. All of their vans are automatic transmissions and outfitted with custom finishing for maximum comfort and style.

Just like Outdoorsy, RVezy is an online van rental platform that uses a peer-to-peer model to link RV owners with rentees. Renting a camper van from RVezy is as easy as typing your destination into their site and then choosing one from a list of impressive and verified RVs.

While the company has a huge RV selection and is well-known in Canada, it’s still gaining momentum in the US. Compared to Outdoorsy, RVezy in the US has a smaller selection of camper vans and rental locations. But this deficit is likely temporary since the company is determined to establish a strong US market.

Escape Campervans is one of the largest van rental companies in the USA, offering their own converted vans to rent. It was founded by three surfers in 2003 in New Zealand and then they expanded to the United States in 2009.

Now they operate rental locations in more than thirteen cities, with Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Phoenix, San Francisco, Salt Lake City, and Denver on the list. If you’re in Canada, no worries. The company’s campervan rentals are also available in Vancouver and Calgary.

While most rental companies are focused in the West, Escape Campervans is one of the few that is available on the East Coast with their locations in New York and Orlando. Because they have so many rental locations, it’s pretty easy to find a place to start your road trip.

The highlight of Escape Campervans is that they are hand-painted by local artists. Think, gram-worthy pictures and aesthetically pleasing postcards…if you don’t mind all the attention you’ll be attracting.

Their vans can sleep two to five people. One of their most popular models is the Maverick—spacious on the inside but still small enough to drive through crowded parking lots.

Rental rates begin at $33 per day but pick up during peak season. These rates are also dependent on the RV model, pick-up or drop-off location, and the duration of your trip. The longer you rent an RV, the lower the cost.

The mileage restriction for Escape Campervans is 100 miles per day, and exceeding this limit means you have to pay an additional fee at the rate that corresponds to your vehicle’s model. If you have driven less than the mileage limit, you’ll receive a refund for the unused miles. This means they are better for slower-paced traveling than a long haul road trip.

Established in 1972 by Robert Smalley Sr., Cruise America is one of the biggest RV rental companies today. Unlike Outdoorsy and RVezy, Cruise America is a corporate rental company with one of the largest fleets in North America. They have locations everywhere from San Francisco to Salt Lake City to Miami.

Chances are, you’ve probably seen one of their rentals on the road or at National Parks. With unique, elaborate designs on the exterior (including the quintessential photo of a dog in the door’s window), it’s impossible to forget a Cruise America RV. With one of their rentals, you can easily cruise America in style.

Their fleet comprises four models that can sleep anywhere from two to seven travelers:

• Large RV: fit for a family of up to seven people.
• Standard RV: perfect for up to five people.
• Compact RV: sleeps up to three people.
• Truck Camper: can sleep a maximum of two people—ideal for a couple or someone who’s still a rookie in the RV game.

Along with renting out RVs, Cruise America also sells pre-owned RVs at a reduced cost.

• Due to the company possessing a large fleet, they have a wide range of availability for their RVs.
• Headquartered in Phoenix, Arizona, their vans are available in over 132 rental locations in the US and Canada. No matter where your road trips take you, you'll be able to find a location to rent an RV, from the West Coast to the East Coast.
• Since Cruise America is one of the leading RV rental companies, it can afford to offer a better price than most of its competitors. The company also has promotions at certain times of the year as well as special offers if you book early.
• Cruise America offers free insurance, which is a great perk compared to most camper van rental companies.
• They offer one-way rentals, so you can pick a campervan up in San Francisco and drop it off in Las Vegas, or any of their other rental locations!
• Their cancellation policy covers a full refund if you cancel your two-way booking at least a week before the start of your trip.

Cabana : Luxury Campervan Rentals

Cabana is a franchise van rental company that currently offers campervan rentals in Seattle, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Austin.

Unlike peer-to-peer camper van rental companies like Outdoorsy, all their vans are part of their franchise-owned fleets, and they are all professionally built specifically for Cabana. This has both advantages and disadvantages.

Cabana positions itself as a “modern, mobile hospitality company. Renting a Cabana really is like getting a hotel room on wheels, and you get a lot more convenience than most van rentals. Cabana vans come fully loaded with clean linens, toiletries, camp chairs, and a coffee machine. With so much ready for you, it’s easy to hit the road in comfort.

Cabana also has their own app for scheduling rentals, and their vans are fitted with electronic locks for contactless pickup. It is super easy to pick up a van and get on the road. The app also has manuals and helpful instructions that show you how to operate everything in the van.

One great thing about Cabana’s system is that you know what you are getting, and their vans are beautiful. You can check out their van layouts and features , and you know that every van will have the same amenities.

Of course, that means you don’t get much to choose from. They technically have three different models available, but they aren’t all available at the different rental locations, and there aren’t huge differences between them anyway. As long as you’re happy with their setup.

Cabana is also quite a bit more expensive than most other camper van rentals out there. You get great amenities, quality, and service, but if you’re looking for the cheapest option, you’ll probably want to look elsewhere.

In my mind, Cabana is fantastic for people looking to try van travel for the first time. Their contactless pickup is super easy, and their vans are well stocked to make it as easy as possible to get out traveling, whether you’re visiting famous cities or checking off National Parks.

• Cabana has built a ton of storage into their vans. With the massive storage room under the bed, it’ll be easy to find space for everything you bring on your trip. 
• They currently have rental locations in Seattle, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Austin, and that list is likely to grow as they expand with new franchises.
• Not much selection for different van options. Basically, you get what you get.
• It’s going to be more expensive than many other camper van rental companies.
• As with many vans, the grey and black water tanks are pretty small and will fill up quickly on longer trips.
• Their rental locations are mostly along the west coast (and one in Texas), so you're out of luck anywhere else.

Native Campervans : Best Camper Rentals for Groups

Denver-based company, Native Campervans , is a local company that offers fully-equipped, customized camper vans for long and short-term journeys. They have rental locations in Denver, Salt Lake City, or Las Vegas for a West American road trip.

Choosing a van from Native Campermans is so simple . They have three types of vans: the “Smalls,” the “Biggie,” and the “Squad.”

The “Smalls” is a remodeled Dodge Grand Caravan, and the “Biggie” is a Ram ProMaster HighRoof. Both these vans sleep two, but Biggie is, obviously, more spacious and can seat up to three people.

If you’re a group of four, go for the “Squad.” With a bed and waterproof rooftop tent, all four of your squad members can comfortably sleep in/on this van.

Besides a convertible bed, rentals also include bedding, camping chairs, a foldaway table, and a small kitchen with a gas stove, sink, and cooking essentials. Basically, all the necessary amenities you would need on a campervan trip.

Rates depend on the season and trip duration but range between $80-140 per day in the off-season and $110-240 per day during peak season. Rentals have a mileage limit of 100 miles per night, and any excess mileage is charged at a rate of $0.25 per mile.

• Each camper van rental includes basic insurance coverage.
• You can add additional drivers for no extra fee.
• Their spacious interiors enable a comfortable sitting and sleeping situation.
• Some models offer a rooftop tent for more sleeping room.
• Cruise through the entire US and Canada without worrying about out-of-state penalties.

• If you care about the planet (and you really should), it’s nice to know that Native Campermans is committed to reducing their impact. They’re making an effort to offset their carbon footprint and have already reduced it by 550 metric tons.

• With only three types of camper vans, customers’ selection is limited.

Peace Vans : Best Vintage Campervan Rentals

If you love those old-school VWs, Peace Vans might just be your favorite option from this list.

Based in Seattle, WA, they offer their retro camper van rentals across the Pacific Northwest. They also specialize in the repair and maintenance of VW campers. They’re actually the largest VW campervan shop in North America.

Once, a couple drove from Alabama all the way to the company’s shop in Seattle so their precious VW could get a winter makeover . That’s some real dedication, folks!

The company caters to the hip and cool. They spice up their travel vans with cookware, wine glasses, freshly-ground coffee, and more thoughtful and surprising additions. It’s like boutique #vanlife.

Peace Vans has a way of charming its customers. They also provide itineraries or help you plan yours. Harley Sitner, the owner, says he has worked with families and their photos from the ‘70s to recreate childhood trips. Heartwarming, right?

Just in case you’re not a fan of the iconic VW camper vans, or the groovy Vanagon vibe doesn’t appeal to you, the company also rents out stylish Mercedes campers.

• Revamped VW camper van rentals for insta-worthy pictures.
• Rentals are more personalized and many times come with surprise additions.
• Along with camping van rentals, they offer gift cards, detailed itineraries, and access to secret camping spots.
• Most vans come fitted with a refrigerator and a complete set of cooking and eating utensils for four people.

GoCamp : Best Storyteller Overland Rentals

There are a lot of fleet rental companies out there, but there are still a lot of advantages to peer-to-peer rental marketplaces. GoCamp is another platform where van owners can rent out their vehicles for you to use and enjoy. They are often more affordable, you get way more options, and you can find rentals all over the country.

One difference between GoCamp and other rental platforms like Outdoorsy is that there are only campervans here, and they have a higher standard overall for the vans that are listed. There’s still a huge range to choose from, though. You can get an uber-luxurious sprinter van with full kitchens and bathrooms, or a monster 4×4 lifted adventure machine .

• A huge range of campervans is available at locations across the country.
• Their curated list of individual-owned vans includes high-end, luxury models that are much better quality than you find from most peer-to-peer rentals.
• Off-road capable 4x4 models available in many locations, if you want to get off the beaten path.
• GoCamp vans are more expensive than other peer-to-peer rentals like Outdoorsy.
• Since it isn't a rental fleet, there may be maintenance issues with some of the vans.
• Watch out for cleaning fees if you return a van dirty.

Vintage Surfari Wagons : Campervan Rental in California

Vintage Surfari Wagons is similar to Peace Vans in that they also offer a range of classic Volkswagen camper vans for rent.

The company is, however, closer to Southern California. Its location makes it a better option for Californians seeking an old-school VW camper van rental.

Time travel back to the ‘70s era with their wide range of Vanagons, Eurovans, and buses for rent. Their rates are pretty reasonable and sit somewhere near the middle of the range for camper van rental prices.

• The company is located in Los Angeles, which is an amazing road trip start point.
• Group trips are available to book for places like California’s Death Valley.
• The ‘70s and ‘80s-styled VW camper van rental options make for stunning pictures and embody the Cali vibe.
• All the funky vans include a stove, refrigerator, dining table, sink, sleeping bunks, and other amenities necessary for camping.
• The company only offers vintage rental vans. Slow cruising and a retro feel may not be your cup of tea.
• During mid-summer, rates can get pretty high with a three-day minimum requirement for renting.

Voyager Campervans

Voyager Campervans are nicely spread out across the United States, with rental locations in Los Angeles, Portland, Nashville, Phoenix, Austin, and Minneapolis. One of my favorite things about this company is that you can plan a one-way trip and drop off your van at any location! most camper van rental companies only let you pick up and drop off at the same location, so this is great for long-haul trips.

Voyager Camper Vans come with a large bed, off-grid power, a stove with cooking fuel, linens, cookware, and a water source. If you’re an eco-friendly kind of person, you’ll appreciate that these vans have extra sustainable touches, like solar-powered coolers.

It’s also super convenient to travel with Voyager Campervans: you can use self-check-in to save yourself some time, and you’ll get up to 175 miles per day included in your daily rate. You’re all set to go without worrying about too much about mileage.

• Voyager Campervans are fitted with everything you need to live on the road and cook up a storm. They are fitted with impressive kitchens, and additional amenities are available, like linens, towels, and camping gear.
• You can take advantage of their one-way service instead of doing a round trip.
• They’re eco-friendly, with solar-powered coolers and electric outlets with LED lighting that works even when the van is off.
• Rentals can range anywhere from about $99 to $150 per day, depending on the season. Prices increase during the peak season, but you’ll get great discounts when you book longer trips. For example, a peak season rental from Austin is about $149/night for a three-day rental, while it’ll only cost you $111/night if you rent for 10+ days.
• 175 miles per day is covered in your daily rate, which is much higher compared to most other companies.

Ok, enough about old-school, vintage campervans that belong in grandma’s yard. It’s not always “old is gold.” Sometimes, it’s about the fine luxuries and comfort.

Moterra Campervans is a locally-owned campervan rental company based in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, and they have rental locations all over the West, from Salt Lake City to San Francisco to Las Vegas. They offer three types of campervans, all of which are 4WD Diesel Sprinters. These include pop-tops and high-roof Sprinters.

The all-inclusive luxury Sprinter vehicles come fully equipped with everything you could possibly need for your trip as a standard. Moterra’s vehicles also feature a full kitchen with a stove, sink, and fridge, a thermostat heater, a solar electric system, and a porta-potty toilet.

To accommodate up to four people, the pop-top vans have two double beds. The high-roof vans sleep two or a family of three with a small child, making them ideal for couples. High-roof vans also come with a full bathroom (a hot water shower and toilet).

These decked-out come at a cost, though. Moterra campervan rentals are some of the most expensive out there. It’s worth it if you want to cruise in luxury, but there are less expensive options if you don’t need the absolute best van on the market.

In addition to the basic amenities, Moterra provides entirely customized itineraries, so you don’t have to spend hours planning your own.

• Moterra offers all-inclusive luxury campervan rentals with its Mercedes-Benz Sprinter vehicles.
• The Sprinters are of premium quality—built by Sportsmobile and a maximum of three years old.

The company offers Ford Econolines and Ford Transits with both 2WD and 4WD. Their vans come fully equipped with everything you could need for a campervan trip.

Each vehicle comfortably accommodates four individuals or a family of five with small children. Along with standing room inside, vehicles have two beds, a full kitchen, cooking essentials, and camping gear. They also include a set of Gazetteer Maps for Oregon, Washington, and California and a deck of cards for an easy and entertaining road trip.

Like some of the other company-owned fleet camper van rentals, Roamerica camper vans are pricy compared to peer-to-peer rentals. It’s up to you to decide if the quality, convenience, and peace of mind is worth paying a bit more for.

I spent years considering van life and finally embarked on a 2-week trip last fall. 5 months later, I'm still dreaming of the lifestyle.

Last summer, I stepped outside my dew-covered tent in Bryce Canyon National Park after a night of tossing and turning.

Before I could process the vibrant sunset, the first thought that crossed my mind was how the knots in my back wouldn't exist if I had slept on a mattress.

The spring before that, I woke up sweaty at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival , craving a Glacier Freeze Gatorade that spent all night cooling in a fridge.

Sandwiched between those nights in tents are countless early-morning hikes and late nights stargazing, where I wished the comforts of my home were feet away instead of miles away.

Those desires could be answered with van life — especially since the version of van life I saw scrolling on Instagram and TikTok seemed to fit my outdoorsy lifestyle.

While not everyone who lives in their car does it by choice — vehicular homelessness is on the rise across the United States — there is a growing population of people who choose to live out of cars, vans, and RVs. Fueled by the pandemic and rising costs of living , more people are trading their houses and apartments for vehicles. In fact, Allied Market Research reported that the global RV market was valued at $57.3 billion in 2021 and could reach $117 billion by 2031.

Last October, it was my turn to test out the lifestyle.

Instead of diving head-first into the lifestyle, I gave it a test drive

Since becoming a reporter at Business Insider, I've profiled dozens of nomads living in RVs, vans, travel trailers, and tiny homes on wheels .

Interview after interview, conversation after conversion, one piece of advice constantly popped up.

"I would recommend trying to rent a van for at least a week or two," Maddy Garrett , a 25-year-old who moved into a Subaru Outback and recently upgraded to a Ram ProMaster, previously told BI. "After that, it's like, 'OK, I know I can do this.'"

The lifestyle has its downsides — bathrooms and campsites can be tough to find, people can struggle to find community, and not everyone is built to live in a state of flux.

For some, the positives outweigh the negatives. For others, the advantages don't come out on top.

As someone who has a habit of romanticizing everyday tasks like neighborhood walks and grocery shopping, a test run felt required before uprooting my life and emptying my bank account.

Last summer, I began planning a two-week trip in a campervan. Two weeks was enough time to test out camping in RV resorts, on public land, and in parking lots outside Cracker Barrel and Walmart .

I could grocery shop and cook meals while balancing long days driving with isolated days hiking.

I knew two weeks wasn't enough to experience every aspect of van life. For example, my biggest hesitation is a fear of getting lonely on the road — which is something I knew I wouldn't face in a two-week period.

But I hoped two weeks could give me insight into whether it would be a lifestyle I could explore more in the future.

I rented a Ram ProMaster for two weeks and covered six states

As I eyed different campervan rental companies, Native Campervans caught my eye. The rental company has four locations, with a hub in Denver. This meant I wouldn't need to fly during my trip.

Plus, the company's vans were what I dreamed of when I pictured van life. I rented a Ram ProMaster, and at about 75 square feet , it was plenty of space for one person while still being small enough to fit in an everyday parking spot.

In October, the rental company handed over a set of keys. I was visiting an array of destinations — deserts, mountains, forests, and cities — and I packed for each place. Plus, I had my outdoor gear and grocery shopped at Costco days before. Simply put, I had overpacked.

Seeing my nearly dozen bags fit in the van with space to spare eliminated my first fear of van life — that there wouldn't be enough space to live. I decided I could manage full-time with 75 square feet.

After I unpacked, I climbed into the front seat and set off toward New Mexico.

For the next two weeks, I explored America's Southwest. I drove through small mountain towns, sat in traffic in major cities like Las Vegas, and discovered remote campsites on public land .

I fell in love with the freedom the van gave me. If I was hungry, I pulled over and made breakfast. If I was tired, I found a quiet place to nap. If I was itching for a hike, all I had to do was pull up a map and find a place to explore.

I saw striking landscapes that I could've never seen on a weekend trip from Denver. I met fascinating people who were eager to share their life stories. And I discovered more about myself.

I dropped off my van and left with more interest in the lifestyle

After romanticizing the lifestyle for so long, my biggest fear with the trip was that it'd extinguish my longing for van life.

If anything, it did the opposite.

I arrived back home exhausted and with some lessons learned. I never need to travel that fast again — six states in two weeks is about five states too many, in my opinion.

Cooking extravagant meals and baking will be hobbies I leave behind if I do live a nomadic life — I haven't seen many vans equipped with ovens.

And I still fear I'll get lonely after spending months bopping from location to location.

But beyond that, I experienced the appeal so many describe, and I'm eager to try it out again. This time, though, I might leave my apartment for a month or two.

Traveling through the Austin airport for the solar eclipse? Here's how to plan.

Travelers will flood the state of Texas to catch the total solar eclipse on Monday afternoon.

This means that Austin-Bergstrom International Airport is preparing for a "high volume" of travelers during the solar event.

Whether you are flying in or picking someone up from the airport, here is everything you need to know about traveling in Texas during the eclipse.

What will traffic be like in Austin, Texas, for the solar eclipse?

Prepare for heavy traffic on roads around the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport. Presidential Boulevard is the main entrance to the Barbara Jordan Terminal. If it is busy, drivers can use Spirit of Texas to access the terminal instead, according to a news release from the Austin airport. Travelers should plan to spend more time than usual in traffic due to congested major highways and roadways across Central Texas.

Busy times will be 8 a.m. April 9 on Highway 71, north of the airport. So leave the house with plenty of time to spare.

"Airport roadways will be busy and congested and could contribute to delays for passengers and staff getting to the airport," according to the news release.

Will there be flight delays for the solar eclipse?

Possibly, the Austin airport warned of flight disruptions in air travel due to recently issued air traffic procedures by the Federal Aviation Administration for the eclipse. This could cause delays or changes to flights.

Expect lines for rental cars, airline ticket counters and security screening checkpoints. Build this additional time into your travel plan.

"AUS is prepared to utilize every square foot of the terminal to ensure a safe and smooth operation," according to the news release. "Extra Department of Aviation staff will be in the terminal to provide assistance to passengers and to help keep ticket counter and security screening lines organized."

Can I still get a rental car at the airport for the solar eclipse?

Rental cars will be in high demand due to the nature of the event. Visitors will drive into Austin and fly out after the eclipse is over. The airport expects a high volume of rental car returns at the Rental Car Facility, making lines and wait times longer. Rental agencies are "100% booked" for available rentals on the day of the eclipse. They are also expected to be booked on April 9.

"The Department of Aviation is working with our rental car operators to support their operations contingency plan," according to the press release.

Where to drop off passengers at the Austin airport?

Drop-off can happen at the upper departures or the lower arrival levels of the airport. The airport recommends dropping passengers off at whichever location is least congested.

Tips for traveling during the solar eclipse

• Get to the airport early: Plan to arrive at least two and a half hours before departure for domestic flights. International flights should arrive at least three hours in advance. If you have to return a rental car, check luggage or have a large group, plan to arrive even earlier than the two-and-a-half-hour early recommended arrival time.
• Keep traffic conditions in mind: Roadways outside of the airport will also be congested. Austin-Bergstrom airport recommends allowing for extra time while traveling to the airport.
• Returning a rental car: Rental cars must be returned by the renter in person at the Rental Car Facility. Plan to wait in line and allow for extra time on April 9 at the car drop-off.
• Getting assistance: There will be additional aviation staff on the day of the eclipse and after to provide support to travelers. You can also call the airport at 512-530-2242 if you need any assistance. The airport also will provide real-time updates via its X account .
