30 Best Top Gear Episodes Ranked

Jeremy Clarkson on the town

Not that long ago, "Top Gear" was one of the most popular shows in the world . Launched in 1977, it was revamped in 2002 with the trio of Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, and James May taking on presenting duties with the help of a mysterious test driver known as the Stig. Broadcast in more than 200 countries, it was considered one of the best British TV shows on the air and ensured that the three presenters became household names.

"Top Gear" is not without controversy, and it has faced plenty of criticism over the years. These unpleasant incidents include the cast making incredibly offensive remarks  and driving irresponsibly . This controversy culminated in Clarkson being fired from the show in 2015 . Shortly afterward, Hammond, May, and executive producer Andy Wilman all left "Top Gear" to create "The Grand Tour" with Clarkson on Amazon Prime . They were ultimately replaced by a series of new presenters, though it's debatable whether any of them resonated with audiences quite like the original three.

Despite all those negative aspects, "Top Gear" was undoubtedly one of the most entertaining shows on television when it was in its prime. Spanning more than 30 seasons and 200 episodes means that picking the very best of the best is a difficult task. Fortunately, we've done the hard work already. You can just sit back and find out which episodes of "Top Gear" are simply unmissable.

30. Super Car Road Trip From Las Vegas, Nevada To Calexico, California

In the second episode of Season 19, the three presenters went on a road trip across the United States . Traveling across the west coast of the country, they journeyed from Nevada down to the Mexican border, taking in Las Vegas and Los Angeles along the way. Each of the three hosts chose a supercar for the challenge, with Clarkson going with the Lexus LFA, Hammond picking the Dodge Viper, and May decided on the Aston Martin Vanquish. The road trip involved a legal drag race in Las Vegas organized by the police and a game of aerial laser tag with a group of fighter pilots.

The episode lacked a news segment and did not feature any reviews or power tests. Instead, most of the show was dedicated to the American road trip. This ended with a race from Palm Springs to Calexico, which Clarkson won. Meanwhile, the star in a reasonably priced car for this episode was Fleetwood Mac member Mick Fleetwood , who went around the track in a time of 1 minute and 45.4 seconds.

29. Making A Commercial For Reducing Cycle-Related Accidents

The fifth episode of Season 21 saw Hammond travel to Abu Dhabi to test out the Porsche 918 Spyder . This hybrid supercar makes use of a pair of electric motors with a traditional V8 petrol engine to create a stunningly fast vehicle. To put it through its paces, Hammond took it for a spin around the Yas Marina Circuit , home of the Abu Dhabi Formula One race, and compared it to the McLaren P1. In an earlier segment, Clarkson reviewed the BMW M135i and Volkswagen's latest Golf GTI. After that, he and May set about creating a brand-new public information film to promote safety for cyclists in London.

The star in a reasonably priced car for this episode was "Breaking Bad" actor Aaron Paul . He spoke about his time on the iconic AMC show as well as his role in the 2014 movie "Need for Speed." He managed to set a time of 1 minute and 44.7 seconds in the Vauxhall Astra, which put him in first place ... until pop star Olly Murs came along and beat Paul's time in a later episode.

28. Patagonia Special

The "Patagonia Special" was a two-part "Top Gear" episode that did not feature any studio segments, with the action taking place entirely in South America. Airing over the holiday season in 2014 across two consecutive days, it saw Clarkson, Hammond, and May celebrate the 60th anniversary of the V8 engine by driving three V8-engined sports cars across Chile and Argentina. The trip was roughly 1,600 miles long and involved a Porsche 928, a Ford Mustang, and Lotus Esprit .

Along the way, the trio struggled to navigate the difficult terrain and poor roads, with the Ford and Porsche suffering numerous breakdowns and faults. The presenters were forced to camp outside, travel over an old and broken bridge, and get through a boggy marsh. Yet the episode is perhaps most famous for the ending that saw the production crew and the presenters faced with a host of protesters following what was perceived to be offensive number plates that referenced the Falklands War. An investigation later found the license plates had been registered to the car since 1991.

27. Australian Northern Territory Road Trip In GT Cars

In this Season 22 episode of "Top Gear," the three presenters take a road trip across the Northern Territory of Australia . Each of them picked a fast and comfortable grand tourer for the trip, with Clarkson going for a BMW M6 Gran Coupé, Hammond a Bentley Continental GT V8, and May opting for the Nissan GT-R. Driving across the vast open spaces in Australia, they visited an abandoned gold mine, got to see some of the world's longest lorries, and finally ended the challenge by helping  herd more than 4,000 cows in one of the largest farms in Australia. This experience may have come in handy for Clarkson on his later show, " Clarkson's Farm " on Amazon Prime.

Unlike most "Top Gear" episodes, there was no news segment or power test; most of the screentime was devoted to the Australian challenge. However, Canadian actor Kiefer Sutherland did appear as the star in a reasonably priced car, setting a time of 1 minute and 49.2 seconds in wet conditions.

26. Amphibious Car Challenge

The third episode of Season 8 featured what has become known as the " Amphibious Car Challenge ." This is the first incarnation of the challenge and saw Clarkson, Hammond, and May building cars that could work when driving on land or sailing on water. Hammond chose a Volkswagen camper van that he dubbed the Damper Van, May attached a sail to a classic Triumph Herald, while Clarkson modified a Toyota Hilux truck to create a Toybota. May ultimately won the challenge when Clarkson and Hammond failed to finish — their vehicles sank in the reservoir they were racing across.

As well as the main challenge, the episode also featured the usual "Top Gear" segments. Philip Glenister appeared as the star in a reasonably priced car, who drove the Lacetti around a wet track in a time of 1 minute and 54.3 seconds. Clarkson and the Stig helped test out the Lotus Exige S , a car that was ultimately deemed to be uncool when it was put on the "Top Gear" cool board.

25. Perfect £2,500 Car For 17-Year-Olds

Episode 2 of Season 13 was focused on the team trying to find what would be the best car for a 17-year-old driver . This included examining multiple factors, such as what would reduce insurance costs, be cheap to repair after accidents, and be able to navigate muddy fields and uneven terrains at music festivals in the U.K. May chose a Volkswagen Golf Mark-III, Clarkson picked a turbocharged Volvo 940 Estate, and Hammond selected a Hyundai SCoupe.

In a later segment, Hammond went to Abu Dhabi to try out the Lamborghini Murcielago SV. Impressed with the car, he tested it out against the far more expensive Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren 722. He later stages a race between the Bugatti Veyron and the McLaren F1 , two of the fastest cars on the planet. The McLaren F1 took an early lead in the drag race, but the Veyron ultimately caught up to it and used its superior top speed to take a significant lead. The "Star in a Reasonably Priced Car" segment  featured actor, writer, and presenter Stephen Fry.

24. Season 15, Episode 1

This episode of "Top Gear" saw the team investigate why the world does not have more three-wheeled cars, with Clarkson  testing out the classic Reliant Robin . He drove the car from Sheffield to Rotherham, but immediately found out that the vehicle is incredibly prone to toppling over  due to the unusual configuration of having the single wheel at the front rather than the rear. During the episode, Clarkson also tested out the Bentley Continental Supersports while May took the Toyota Hilux to the top of an active volcano.

Season 15 marked the end of the Chevrolet Lacetti as the reasonably priced car used in the "Star in a Reasonably Priced Car" segment. The show would now use the Kia Ceed, a car that could go 0 to 60 mph in 10.4 seconds with a top speed of 119 mph. Rather than feature a single guest star, the team decided to invite several celebrities who would be able to fill out the leaderboard and ensure it had more than a single time on it. The guests included comedian Al Murray, journalist Nick Robinson, dancer Louie Spence, athlete Amy Williams, businessman Peter Jones, presenter Johnny Vaughan, and stand-up Bill Bailey.

23. Albania Road Trip

The third episode of Season 16 saw the "Top Gear" gang head to Albania in order to test out three super-luxurious cars. The ultimate aim was to see what car was best suited for an organized crime boss. The trio originally chose a Rolls-Royce Ghost, a Mercedes-Benz S65 AMG, and a Bentley Mulsanne. Unfortunately for Clarkson, Bentley withdrew from the episode shortly before the start. Circumstances forced him to switch his choice to a Yugo Skala 55, which caused a few issues when the car refused to start during a drag race midway through the episode.

Outside of the challenge, where the group robs a bank, Clarkson tested the Subaru Impreza STI CS400, the latest car from Cosworth. He later compares it to the Ford Focus RS500 and the Volvo C30 PCP. British presenter Jonathan Ross was the star in a reasonably priced car , and he managed to record a time of 1 minute 49 seconds on a wet track.

22. Spanish Road Trip In Budget Convertibles

Featuring the "Spanish Supercar Road Trip," this is the third episode of Season 20 of "Top Gear." The main challenge in this entry was the presenters going to the Iberian Peninsula to cross southern Spain  from Gibraltar to Madrid. Clarson chose a McLaren MP4-12C Spider, Hammond a Ferrari 458 Spider, and May an Audi R8 V10 Spyder.

The challenge saw the cars tested in a variety of environments as they traveled through the mountain regions of Spain, raced at an abandoned airport, and drove around an area of Madrid that had been converted into a street circuit.

Unlike other studio-based episodes of "Top Gear," this one didn't have any standard reviews or other features outside of "Star in a Reasonably Priced Car." The celebrity this week was "Doctor Strange" and "Sherlock" leading man Benedict Cumberbatch . He made it around the track in 1 minute and 47.8 seconds.

21. Building The Ford Transit Hovervan

The fourth episode of Season 20, this entry in the car series saw the three presenters building a car that is able to operate as a hovercraft . Using a Ford Transit van, they created what they dubbed the "Hovervan." The first version of the vehicle proved to be a failure. The second iteration featured an improved design that worked better but still had some notable issues that made it impractical and difficult to control as they traveled down the River Avon.

The show did face some criticism over claims that some scenes featured paid actors rather than genuine members of the public, but that didn't stop the episode from being a hit with fans. Clarkson also reviewed the Mercedes SLS Black along with the Mercedes SLS Electric Drive.

The star in a reasonably priced car for this episode was actor Hugh Jackman . He drove the Vauxhall Astra in a time of 1 minute and 46.1 seconds, posting a time that put him in fifth place on the leaderboard, beating out the likes of Will Smith, Ron Howard, and Margot Robbie.

20. Best Crossovers For Caravanners

The fifth episode of Season 20, this installment of "Top Gear" featured a challenge focused on a new type of hatchback known as a crossover. Believing that these vehicles are most popular with caravanners, each presenter picked an example of the vehicle class and went on a caravan holiday , ending up with a Mazda CX-5 and a Volkswagen Tiguan. The challenge sees them testing the type of activities that a crossover would be used for and living life as someone who goes on caravan trips.

There were two reviews in this episode of "Top Gear." The first was done by May and involved the latest edition of the Porsche 911 Carrera, which was largely unchanged from when the car was first introduced in the 1960s. Later, Hammond tested the Lamborghini Aventador Roadster, taking it to Italy and racing it around the famous Imola track. Finally, Aerosmith singer Steven Tyler was the star in a reasonably priced car, driving the Vauxhall Astra around the track in a time of 1 minute and 51 seconds.

19. Amphibious Car Challenge II

In this Season 10 episode, Clarkson, Hammond, and May revisited one of their most popular challenges from earlier in the series. Working with a variety of vehicles, they each try to create amphibious cars that work equally as well on the ground as they do in the water. Clarkson used a Nissan pickup that he dubbed the Nissank; Hammond used a Volkswagen as he did in the previous amphibious challenge; May went back to his original Triumph Herald, although he upgraded it with some new materials and features.

Starting off in Sidcup, the group drove to Dover, and then attempted to cross the English Channel and make it to Calais in France. Unfortunately, both Hammond and May had issues with their vehicles in the sea and were unable to complete the challenge as their vehicles sank . Meanwhile, Clarkson's Nissank proved effective, and he eventually picked up his two colleagues.

The star in a reasonably priced car for this episode was musician and presenter Jools Holland. He posted a time of 1 minute and 49.9 seconds. The main review of the episode was of the Audi R8, which Clarkson drove and compared to Hammond's very own Porsche 997 Carrera S. The Audi performed better around the track, but both presenters agreed it lacks soul.

18. Britcar 24 Hour Endurance Race — Fiat 500 vs. BMX Riders Through Budapest Race

Episode 9 of Season 10 is a 2007 "Top Gear" episode that was a follow-up to an episode from the previous season. Back in Season 9, the presenters had used tractors to plant seeds and create a biofuel crop. However, when they harvested the crops, they were shocked to find they planted the wrong seeds and are left with 500 gallons of biodiesel instead of the fuel they initially wanted.

To make the best of the situation, the trio used the biodiesel to enter the Britcar 24-hour endurance race at Silverstone. Driving a modified BMW 330d, they managed to qualify but suffered a number of mechanical issues during the race that put them at the back of the grid multiple times. Fortunately, the Stig was able to keep them in the race and they ended up finishing in 39th place overall.

Outside of the main challenge, actor Keith Allen took part in the "Star in a Reasonably Priced Car" segment, recording a time of 1 minute and 51.7 seconds on what was described as one of the wettest days at the "Top Gear" test track in the history of the show. May reviewed the latest Fiat 500 in Hungary while Clarkson compared the Daihatsu Materia hatchback with the Ascari A10.

17. Race Across The Urban Landscape Of St. Petersburg

The Season 22 premiere of "Top Gear" saw the gang take part in a race across the Russian city of Saint Petersburg . The race was essentially a recreation of the Season 10 race where the trio competed to get across London. May chose a tiny Renault for the journey, Hammond cycled, and Clarkson used a hovercraft to travel mainly by water. May ended up winning while the Stig failed to finish after struggling to travel on public transport.

Elsewhere in the episode, Hammond reviewed the Huracán, a replacement for the Lamborghini Gallardo. Pop singer  Ed Sheeran was the star in a reasonably priced car . Sheeran claimed this was the first time that he had ever driven a car, so he had to use an automatic. He posted a time of 1 minute 54.2 seconds in very wet conditions.

One of the most famous moments of this episode came when a lorry pulled out in front of Hammond while he was cycling. This led to a foul-mouthed tirade against the driver that was mostly cut from the original broadcast. However, the uncensored version was included on the DVD release and has become popular on social media platforms such as TikTok.

16. Homemade Ambulance Challenge

Airing in February of 2015, this is the third episode of Season 22 and saw the three main presenters compete in a series of challenges as they created their very own ambulances . After examining the limitations of a normal ambulance used in the U.K., the trio set about designing their very own vehicles that would improve the transport experience for patients. These projects were tested for their usefulness, speed, practicality, and their monetary value. Ultimately, Hammond came out on top with his Chevrolet G20 van, while Clarkson came second with his Porsche 944 Turbo, and May came last with a Ford Scorpio Cardinal.

The star in a reasonably priced car for this episode was Formula One racing driver Daniel Ricciardo . Rather than use the Vauxhall Astra Tech Line GT that was used for the segment from Season 20 onwards, Ricciardo was given the original Suzuki Liana like all previous Formula One drivers to make the leaderboard a level playing field. He set a time of 1 minute and 42.2 seconds, making him the fastest Formula One driver on the leaderboard.

15. Hammond Is Dropped Into British Columbia, Canada To Test A Watch With A Built-In Energy Beacon

Season 22 of "Top Gear" was the last to feature the talents of Clarkson, Hammond, and May following Clarkson's high-profile dismissal from the BBC . Despite the controversy, the eight episodes included in the 2015 season are all rated quite highly by fans. This is the second installment of Season 22 to appear in this article, and there's more from "Top Gear" in 2015 on the way.

This episode sees Hammond testing a specially made watch that is designed to work in severe weather and alert rescue teams when the beacon is activated. However, it ends up alerting Clarkson and May who are forced to rescue Hammond  when he gets stuck. The two choose pickup trucks and race to get to their colleague first.

Outside of the main challenge, the episode also featured standard "Top Gear" segments. Clarkson road tested the Lexus RC F coupe. The star in a reasonably priced car for this episode was Gillian Anderson , best known for her roles in "The X-Files" and "The Fall." She set a time of 1 minute and 48.5 seconds, although the track was deemed to be mildly moist.

14. Making A Train Out Of A Specially Modified Car And Caravans As Carriages

This Season 17 episode first aired in July of 2011 and saw the group try to improve the railway experience in the U.K. Expressing the opinion that traveling by train can be expensive, slow, and inconvenient, the gang adapted a series of different vehicles and caravans so that they can operate on standard railways. Eventually, Hammond and May gave up and stuck with a normal train as they raced against Clarkson's new sports train invention.

Rowan Atkinson, known for his role in "Mr. Bean," was the star in a reasonably priced car and he drove the Kia Ceed around the test track. He managed a time of 1 minute and 42.2 seconds, putting him in second place on the leaderboard behind Matt LeBlanc , who went a tenth of a second quicker.

The Stig  test drove the Nissan GT-R around the track, setting a blistering time that beat out many of its rivals by a significant margin. Meanwhile, the car was compared to the Jaguar XKR-S in a review by Clarkson, who suggested the Nissan GT-R was a better car for most people and far more practical.

13. US Special

First broadcast in February of 2007, the "US Special" was the third episode of Season 9 . As is usual for specials, this episode features none of the standard "Top Gear" in-studio segments. Instead, it features a 60-minute segment that charts the group's progress as they travel through the United States.

The concept behind the special sees the trio attempting to prove that buying cars would be more enjoyable and cheaper than simply renting a car. Given just $1,000 to make their purchases, Clarkson, Hammond, and May end up buying a 1991 Chevrolet Camaro RS, a 1991 Dodge Ram 1500 pickup truck, and a 1989 Cadillac Brougham. The route sees them go from Miami to New Orleans and meet the Stig's American cousin, who tests each of the cars to determine their performance.

The episode is perhaps best known for a scene where the group are chased from an Alabama gas station . This was in response to hilarious slogans that the presenters had painted on each other's cars, which included a taunt about NASCAR.

12. Race To The North — Ferrari FXX Lap Time — The Stig Revealed

The opening episode of Season 13, this "Top Gear" installment first aired in the summer of 2009. During the "Race to the North" segment, iconic Formula One driver Michael Schumacher appeared as a guest. It was jokingly revealed that Schumacher was actually the Stig , but many were skeptical that the Formula One star could actually be the test driver. One source told The Guardian that this revelation was meant to be a tongue-in-cheek prank.

In the "Race to the North," the team competed against each other as they traveled from London to Edinburgh. The concept was that this would demonstrate what "Top Gear" might look like if it was filmed 60 years ago . Hammond and May drove a Vincent Black Shadow motorbike and a Jaguar XK120, while Clarkson used a Tornado steam locomotive. May went on to win the race by a relatively small margin of just 10 minutes, with Clarkson coming in second.

11. Season 15, Episode 5

First broadcast in July of 2010, Episode 5 of Season 15 of "Top Gear" stands out for a number of reasons. Chief among them is the fact that both Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz take part in the "Star in a Reasonably Priced Car" segment. The pair were promoting their movie " Knight and Day " and finished in nineth and 13th place, respectively, in what ended up being one of the show's most watched episodes in the U.K. with over seven million viewers.

The rest of the episode features two segments that involve Hammond and May. In the first, Hammond raced a group of snowmobile pilots in Sweden as he drove the Volkswagen Touareg. Hammond won thanks to the 130-mph top speed of the car. The final segment saw May attempting to set a new world's record for the fastest car using the new Bugatti Veyron Super Sport. He managed to reach a speed of 259 mph while test driver Pierre-Henri Raphanel made it a staggering 267 mph.

10. Polar Special

The "Polar Special" episode of "Top Gear" first aired in 2007 and marked the first time that the show was broadcast in HD. Clarkson and May attempted to reach the north magnetic pole in a Toyota Hilux Double Cab 3.0L, while the crew used a different modified Hilux for filming and a Toyota Land Cruiser 120. Meanwhile, Hammond raced against the pair using a dog sled pulled by huskies with explorer Matty McNair.

Before the group started their challenge in Canada, they received cold weather training in Australia with the help of Sir Ranulph Fiennes. The journey itself took all of the competitors around 450 miles in total . While the episode was well received by fans , it did come under some criticism.

One of the main complaints focused on a scene where Clarkson and May appeared to be drinking gin and tonics while driving , suggesting they had consumed alcohol while behind the wheel. The BBC Trust later upheld a complaint saying the inclusion of the footage was not justified. Explorers also criticized the episode for making polar expeditions seem easier and less dangerous than they really are.

9. Building Motor Homes

Episode 4 of "Top Gear" Season 15 is known as the "Building Motor Homes" episode. Unlike many others in this list, this particular episode is more of a traditional entry in the series, following the usual format rather than that of a special. Airing in 2010, the main challenge for Clarkson, Hammond, and May was to build their own motorhomes . Using cars they purchased — including a Citroën, Land Rover, and a Lotus — they had to modify the vehicles so that they would work as motorhomes as they traveled across the West Country in the U.K. to test out how well they work in typical situations for campervans.

Model Lauren McAvoy also appeared in a segment where she was driven around the test track by Clarkson. Meanwhile, "The Godfather: Part III" and "Ocean's Eleven" actor  Andy Garcia was the star in a reasonably priced car . Throughout the episode, the presenters also tested a variety of cars, with the Audi R8 V10 Spyder pitted against the latest version of the Porsche 911 Turbo Cabriolet.

8. Middle East Special

The "Middle East Special" was a 2010 episode of "Top Gear" that saw the trio go on a 1,200-mile trip from Iraq, through Turkey and Syria, and finally reaching Palestine through Jordan. Along the way, the group visited an abandoned theme park, drove through cities such as Aleppo and Bethlehem, and saw landmarks like the Mount of Olives and the Sea of Galilee.

The idea behind the special was to see Clarkson, Hammond, and May follow  the path that the Three Wise Men seemingly took in the Bible when they set out to visit the newborn Jesus. It aired over the Christmas period in 2010 and ran for 76 minutes, making it one of the longest "Top Gear" episodes. They drove a Mazda MX-5, Fiat Barchetta Riviera, and BMW Z3, respectively. The presenters had to modify the cars for challenges, including making them bulletproof and customizing their appearance.

Clarkson himself has since admitted that the "Middle East Special" is one of his favorite episodes . Listing the episode along with the "Botswana Special" and "The Grand Tour" episode where they visited Mongolia, the presenter said that this episode was "probably the most amazing to watch."

7. Botswana Special

First aired on November of 2007, "Botswana Special" is a 60-minute episode of "Top Gear" that acted as the fourth episode of Season 10. The trio of Clarkson, Hammond, and May are forced to purchase secondhand cars with just £1,500, and then travel across the salt flats of Botswana . The three presenters were joined by the Stig's African cousin, who tested the cars purchased by the presenters by racing them around a dirty rally track.

The three vehicles used in the special were a Mercedes-Benz 230 E from 1985, a Lancia Beta coupé from 1981, and an Opel Kadett from 1963. A Volkswagen Beetle was kept in reserve as the backup car, as punishment for any presenter whose car became too damaged to drive. The team eventually arrived after a 1,000-mile trip at the Namibian border, where they ultimately declared that the Beetle was the best car as it had needed no repairs during the journey. The setting's breathtaking visuals and unique scenery were particular highlights among the lighthearted and entertaining action of the presenters.

6. A Tribute To Sabine Schmitz

This episode of "Top Gear" was unusual in that it is considered one of the better episodes despite the fact that it first aired well into the post-2015 era of the show. It also had a tragic overtone, acting as a tribute to Sabine Schmitz . The former professional racing driver who competed most regularly for BMW passed away from cancer in 2021. Before that, she made numerous appearances on "Top Gear" and went on to act as a host on the revamped version of the series, along with the likes of Chris Evans, Matt LeBlanc, Rory Reid, and Chris Harris.

A  number of other former "Top Gear" personalities also returned to pay tribute to their colleague, including Clarkson, Hammond, and May. It aired in April of 2021, just a few weeks after Schmitz's death, and showed important moments from her life as well as some of her best scenes from "Top Gear." Fans and critics alike praised the episode , saying that it was a fitting way to honor the memory of the 51-year-old.

5. Africa Special

Another two-part special, this "Top Gear" episode first aired in March of 2013. The sixth episode of Season 19, this installment sees the three presenters attempting to find the true source of the great river known as the Nile as they traverse east Africa. Along the way, they had to contend with a variety of challenges and obstacles, including hectic traffic and seeing their vehicles damaged in a multitude of ways.

Clarkson chose a BMW 528i Touring for the journey, Hammond picked a Subaru Impreza WRX Estate, and May drove a Volvo 850 R. Throughout the two parts, the trio also had to deal with mud slides and navigating with limited maps and a distinct lack of skills. Like many of the "Top Gear" specials, this episode lacked the usual studio segments and instead focused fully on the main feature.

In reviews, some critics who admitted they were not fans of the series said they actually enjoyed its "Africa Special." Stuart Heritage of The Guardian noted that the special felt more organic and genuine, with real moments of emotion.

4. Burma Special

The "Burma Special" was a two-part "Top Gear" episode that saw the three presenters travel across Burma in derelict lorries. The basic premise is that they would journey to the border with Thailand and attempt to build a bridge across the River Kwai. This was a clear reference to the 1957 film " The Bridge on the River Kwai " starring Alec Guinness. Both parts aired in March of 2014.

Clarkson and Hammond both drove a modified Isuzu TX, although the two lorries looked very different, while May used a Hino FB110. The special sees the trio play soccer with a group of police officers, customize their lorries with paint jobs, and face a constant struggle to keep the vehicles going through tough conditions. According to The Guardian , the episode was "undeniably funny" and full of childish pranks that would make most viewers laugh.

3. Bolivia Special

Part of Season 14 , the "Bolivia Special" first aired in 2009 shortly after Christmas. Despite being called the "Bolivia Special," the episode actually takes place in several South American countries, as the presenters journey from the Amazon rainforest in the center of Bolivia down to the Pacific coast of Chile.

Given £3,500 to purchase vehicles, the gang ends up with a Range Rover, a Suzuki SJ40, and a Toyota Land Cruiser that are transported up the river on a raft. Before the group can get going, they are forced to find a way of getting the cars off the boat and onto land. Other challenges involved waterproofing the cars so they could cross safely over a river.

The episode ended up being incredibly popular with viewers, becoming the most watched show on the BBC when it aired, attracting 6.4 million viewers in the U.K. alone. Highlights included confrontation with local drug lords and the infamous Road of Death, one of the world's most dangerous roads .

2. Vietnam Special

The eighth episode of Season 12 of "Top Gear" is the "Vietnam Special," where the trio of presenters were given 15 million đồng to buy motorbikes to travel across the Asian country. In total, the presenters traveled some 1,000 miles, going from Ho Chi Minh City to Hạ Long Bay. Unlike most episodes of the series, it ran for a total of 75 minutes and didn't feature any of the traditional elements that are usually included in "Top Gear" episodes, such as "Star in a Reasonably Priced Car."

While most "Top Gear" episodes are very much focused on the vehicles, "Vietnam Special" stood out. Director and producer  Andy Wilman said that the story of this installment was "skewed towards the three guys." Many viewers and critics agreed that this allowed the hosts to show more of their chemistry and banter with each other in a way that was not usually possible. Hot Cars suggested the fact that Clarkson was forced to use a motorbike when he hates them so much added to the comedy.

1. Season 22, Episode 8

This episode of "Top Gear" was originally due to air in March of 2015 but was delayed following an incident involving Jeremy Clarkson. He was suspended on March 10, just days before the episode was due to hit TV screens. The presenter was ultimately let go by the BBC when  the corporation decided not to renew his contract following what it described as an "unprovoked physical attack" on a producer of the show.

The episode itself featured few of the common elements of a standard "Top Gear" episode and opened with May and Hammond explaining that it had been put together using two features that had been filmed for the previous season. It aired in June of 2015 , following a lengthy hiatus for the show and was the last to feature the three main presenters before they were replaced for Season 23 by Chris Evans and Matt LeBlanc .

The first of the two films saw the trio purchase classic convertible cars for the English summer and learn what it takes to look after the vehicles and the culture that surrounds them. The second feature tasked the presenters with choosing an SUV to take part in a series of challenges designed to test out their abilities.

10 Vietnam Put The Three Top Gear Friends On Motorcycles

In the "Vietnam Special," the three Top Gear hosts were left in Vietnam with shoe boxes of cash and told to find a means of transportation. Initially giddy at the sight of all the cash, they soon found out it was only worth $1000 and couldn't buy a car, leaving them with motorcycles.

They then set off across Vietnam , with Clarkson initially struggling to figure out how to ride. In typical fashion, they inconvenience one another with cumbersome gifts, challenging each other to make it to their destination without breaking them. In the final challenge, they must modify their bikes for the water.

9 Patagonia Landed The Top Gear Trio In Hot Water

Although the "Patagonia Special" has gone down as one of the most controversial entries in Top Gear history, it was a fun and touching road trip. With each man behind the wheel of a classic V8, they made their way down to the southernmost town in the world.

RELATED: 10 Best Trends In Modern Cinema

The special came to a premature close when Clarkson found himself at the heart of a touchy subject: the Falklands War. As they came to blows with locals, the crew had to plot an exit strategy, leading to an escape in the style of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid .

8 The Middle East Was A Nativity-Themed Journey

In the "Middle East Special," the Top Gear trio were thrust into an Iraqi airfield in three super cars, immediately having to do some evasive driving. Navigating political divisions in the region, James May getting injured and Hammond getting sick, they make their way through Iraq, Syria and Jordan.

As they make their way through, they have to modify their cars for the desert, transforming their cars to pass through one of the borders undetected. In the second half, the trio draw nearer to Nazareth and, in typical nativity tradition, set about buying gifts to mirror those brought to Jesus.

7 Australia Was A Great Exploration Of The Outback

In the Australian road trip episode, the Top Gear trio were each put in GT cars and sent out on a four-day road trip across the Northern Territory. They race towards their final challenge, a giant cattle drive where they have to use their cars to assist in rounding up the cows.

The trio enjoyed speed tests, drag races and the Australian environment, sure to make stops to enjoy a good evening of fishing together. The episode also featured a fun special guest appearance from 24 star Kiefer Sutherland as the star in a reasonably priced car.

6 The Canadian Mountain Rescue Top Gear Episode Was A Race Of Survival

Seeing Richard Hammond left to his own devices on top of a desolate snowy mountain, and had the episode double as a race and a survival special. While Richard was channeling the energy of a Bear Grylls show, Clarkson and May slugged it out through the Canadian wilderness in their trucks.

The two drivers, mostly indifferent to Richard's situation, decided to make a bet that whoever made it to Hammond first didn't have to rescue him. As they enjoyed the Canadian landscape and mountains, viewers were treated to Gillian Anderson as the star in a reasonably priced car.

5 The North Pole Was One Of Top Gear's Most Daring Adventures

Top Gear's North Pole race channeled the adventurism of the polar expeditions of old, this time pitting the dog sleds against a modern truck. As Hammond navigated the harsh conditions of sledding, Clarkson and May enjoyed the heated comfort of their truck.

RELATED: 10 Worst Trends In Modern Cinema

The contrasted methods of exploration, the old sled dogs against the new and powerful truck, made this an excellent race to the North Pole. One of the show's first specials, it was a great entry as one of the show's many comparisons of old and new and wheels versus other forms of travel.

4 Bolivia Was A Fun Journey Through The Amazon

Beginning with the three hosts being left by their cars on a boat in the Amazon, the "Bolivia Special" had the Top Gear crew battling the elements, cutting through vines and trees on the way. If the journey itself wasn't entertainment enough, their efforts just to get the cars off the boat was plenty of humor.

As they pushed on through the jungle, they found their way to a main road - which led them to one of the most dangerous roads in the world. Their plucky and robust 4x4s made it to their destination, but in the final minutes one of the guys had an unexpected loss.

3 Botswana Had Some Of The Funniest Moments Of Top Gear

In the "Botswana Special," the trio were given a budget of £1500 and instructed to find the best car possible for the trek ahead. They were tasked with traveling across Botswana in any car other than a 4x4 to prove to viewers back home that driving on roads wasn't as hard as was being made out.

RELATED: 10 Good Movies Ruined By A Bad Twist

The Botswana episode has a special place in the hearts of many fans for Hammond's impressively durable car, "Oliver." The sequence where the trio pass over the Makgadikgadi Pan salt flats, beginning with an unexpected visit by Botswana's vice president, was especially memorable.

2 Burma Sought To Remake Bridge On The River Kwai

Taking inspiration from the acclaimed war drama Bridge on the River Kwai , the team drove through Myanmar using trucks. As they made their way through the nation, they met members of the military fighting in the Burmese Civil War, even enjoying a party together.

In classic Top Gear tradition, viewers got to see and enjoy the gang renovate their trucks into living spaces, though some fared better than others. When they finally reached their destination on what they believed to be the River Kwai, they began the hard task of building their bridge.

1 Africa Was Pure Adventurism For The Top Gear Trio

By far the greatest Top Gear adventure, the "Africa Special" sent the three friends on a quest through Africa in search of the true source of the River Nile. Fancying themselves as the modern equivalent of the Victorian British adventurers, they purchase estate cars and set off.

Modifying their homes for living, they made their way through jungle and muck alike, passing through Uganda, Rwanda and Tanzania, even passing over Lake Victoria. As they neared their destination, the race heated up and had the trio get out of their car and hunt for the source of the Nile on foot.

The Grand Tour: All The Special Episodes Ranked From Worst To Best

Despite The Grand Tour being presented by Jeremy Clarkson , Richard Hammond, and James May from Top Gear , it felt very different from the BBC car show. For one, fans complained of the show feeling more scripted than before. Regardless of this, it’s still been incredibly successful with it now becoming a show that focuses on specials only, with no more studio/tent episodes alongside an audience. So, with the new Scotland special on the way as well as a special that found the trio in Wales and Warwickshire, we had to go through all of the special episodes released up to this point.

So, with one hell of a budget from Amazon, The Grand Tour has managed to explore the world in all sort of different cars, and even boats. But which are the best to watch? Read on and we’ll find out together. We’ll go from the worst to the best episodes in this list. Enjoy.

The Grand Tour Presents: Seamen

This was possibly one of the least liked specials from The Grand Tour, with fans complaining about a lack of storyline and a severe lack of cars. Clarkson, Hammond, and May boat from Siem Reap, Cambodia to Vũng Tàu, Vietnam, on the Mekong Delta. May brought a 1939 Wooden Cruiser, Hammond a Scarab, and Clarkson brought a custom-built PBR.

Interestingly, this was the first episode without the usual writer Richard Porter behind the script and was the first to really come under negative criticism from fans. While there’s a definite correlation here, it was also the first full episode of The Grand Tour without the tent. It may have been too much of a change from the previous season.

Executive Producer Andy William found the change of format very challenging . He told BT the following:

“We’ve always tried to make a special feel special,” he said. “If you look back at the Top Gear ones, they started at an hour. Then they became 90 minutes. Then some of them became two-parters. None of that was planned. The key thing is the 90 minutes. That’s the biggest thing that beats you around the head. “A 90-minute special needs a narrative. In an hour you can piss around more. Just jump around like children with too much sugar. But these longer specials need a journey and narrative, which is added pressure.”

Sea To Unsalty Sea

It’s difficult to choose from the rest of The Grand Tour specials which one comes after the boating episode because simply, they’re all brilliant. But Sea to Unsalty Sea was a little… dull(?) compared to the other special episodes on this list. They basically drove three very expensive GT cars from Georgia to Azerbaijan and not a lot happened. Clarkson, Hammond, and May drove three grand tourers: an Aston Martin DBS, a BMW M8, and a Bentley Continental GT.

These cars aren’t anything to complain about, but we’re used to something a bit more interesting over three performance cars that aren’t going to break down, have no real issues that the trio will have to deal with, and have no real connection to where they’re driving. On top of this, the story of the episode was to find the perfect car for someone who lives in Georgia but wants to eat freshwater fish. It’s not quite finding the source of the River Nile, is it?

International Buffoon’s Vacation

Okay, now we’re getting into the good stuff and an episode that we’d actually want to go back to and watch again. In this special episode, Clarkson, Hammond and May went on holiday to the United States in three RVs and unsurprisingly didn’t want to share vehicles. So, they each bought their own RV and modified them to suit their own tastes. Clarkson’s RV became a yacht for the road, Hammond made his… completely useless, and May made his into a pub – not so surprising as this was very close to his reveal on DriveTribe that he had actually bought a pub back in England.

This episode was full of challenges the trio had to manoeuvre around making it much better than the previous episode in this list. And of course, we were treated to the joke in the RV park of putting the word a*al in front of the RV names. Comedic genius at its best. Then, when the episode was coming to an end, The American made a shocking appearance after being replaced by racing driver Abbie Eaton in the previous season.

Feed The World

This was the first episode I watched of The Grand Tour which reminded me of the good old days of Top Gear . It began with the outline of the mission: to take fish from the coast to a developing village in the centre of Mozambique. May was constantly being soaked thanks to his poor design of keeping the fish in a tank behind the driver’s seat, and the other two presenters were faced with several other challenges throughout their adventure.

The largest of challenges came in the form of a crash by Richard Hammond, who fell off his bike thirty times! He told us the following:

“Things that have gone wrong this series, I think we missed a flight or two but that is just logistics. Imagine corralling us around the world, it is not an easy task. I had a slight incident in Switzerland when I departed the road backwards in quite a fast car but I also crashed a number of times on a motorcycle in Mozambique. Basically, what’s gone wrong is I keep getting injured.”

This was a rather controversial special episode thanks to the awkward ending where the trio left a struggling, developing village in a helicopter. This outraged the public who wondered whether Clarkson, Hammond and May really did help the village, and the fact the jokes at the end revolved around the village not being able to feed itself.

#thegrandtour really unimpressed with the latest episode. Is feeding the world's most deprived people such a minor issue that you feel you can laugh about it? Was a massive fan but my opinion of you lads has really changed! #notfunny #inconsiderate #hungernotcomedy #amazonfailure — Carrie Tough (@ToughCarrie) February 18, 2018

The Beach Buggy Boys

The first season of The Grand Tour certainly had its ups and downs, and plenty of fans were quick to say that they didn’t enjoy it. Celebrity Brain Crash was a bit weird, The American was unloved, and compared to Top Gear, everything felt very high budget, when the best part of the TG days was the trio struggling to make something brilliant out of not a lot of money. But, then the two-part special arrived and everything in the world was good again.

In this episode, the trio each bought a beach buggy and modified it to suit their individual tastes before driving across the deserts of Namibia. The style felt like Top Gear again, and this alongside the 4k filming quality of the upgraded camera crew and the gorgeous landscapes of Namibia, plus a certain d**do joke, this was a brilliant episode and a return to form.

Again, Hammond almost crashed after driving over a blind sand dune, but somehow he survived despite closing his eyes and hoping for the best.

Survival of the Fattest

This was by far one of the best episodes of The Grand Tour to date, and this was for one very special reason. The presenters arrived in Mongolia and were straight away challenged to build their own car in order for them to return to civilisation. The car they built was based on a Land Rover, and Hammond and May had to put up with Clarkson’s love of hammers while surviving on rations of food and water while they put it together. Finally, once they’d built the off-roader, they named it John , and since then it has been a legendary part of The Grand Tour’s short but rich history.

Fans loved it, but presenter Jeremy Clarkson wasn’t a fan .

Posting on Twitter, Clarkson wrote: “I really hope you enjoy the Grand Tour Mongolia Special as much as I hated making it.”

The episode was full of incredible tracking shots, hilarious moments between the trio and their trusty John, and a real story, making it one of the greatest episodes yet.

The Grand Tour Presents: A Massive Hunt

The latest episode of The Grand Tour, A Massive Hunt , follows the trio as they drive over the rough roads of Madagascar with three modified cars as they search for lost pirate treasure. Each of the cars were randomly chosen at the beginning of the episode, and when they realised it involved driving over some of the worst roads in the world, they were modified for such a task.

Clarkson chose a Bentley GT Continental and heavily modified it with larger wheels, longer travelling suspension, and underbody armour, as well as a host of other small changes to improve its off-road abilities. Hammond chose a Ford Focus RS, which he modified with tracks. Unfortunately, while the tracks were a great idea in theory, they ended up being useless. It was so useless in fact, that the Focus RS is the only vehicle to not finish a challenge.

May chose a Caterham, and while it made it with only a change of rear wheels, it was incredibly uncomfortable for the presenter who was soaked in mud by the end of the episode.

In the end, they didn’t find the treasure, but they did blow up a beach, and that always makes me feel better.

The Grand Tour: The Colombia Special

The Colombia Special was a spectacular and nostalgic trip through the country as Clarkson, Hammond, and May go on a photography trip in a Jeep Wrangler, A Chevrolet Silverado (with flames plastered down the side), and a Fiat Panda 4×4. They’re hunting for Amazon screensavers, but encounter plenty of trouble along the way, making it a memorable and hilarious episode. It’s also incredibly reminiscent of the old Top Gear days.

This episode made headlines however, when Jeremy Clarkson was accused of being homophobic after making jokes about his Jeep being a gay icon. Singer Will Young was very vocal about this on Twitter, where he complained about these jokes.

Jeremy was quick to respond in a column on The Sun, where he talked about Young’s outburst:

“But this week, he went berserk on Twitter, saying that I’d been homophobic in the most recent episode of  The Grand Tour ,” Clarkson writes.

“Many gay people who’d seen the show said they couldn’t see a problem. None of my leftie friends could either. One even said I should tell him to stop being so gay.

“I won’t do that though. And nor will I suggest, once again, that mobile phones should be fitted with breathalysers to stop people drinking and tweeting.”

He finished his column in a spectacular fashion:

“No. Instead, I will apologise to Will for causing him some upset and reassure him that I know I’m not homophobic as I very much enjoy watching lesbians on the internet.”

However, if you’re based in the UK, you’ll be far more familiar with Clarkson’s views espoused through his column in the right wing tabloid The Sun and the embarrassing campaign – led by a man driving a tank through London while dressed as The Stig – designed to appeal Clarkson’s firing for punching a producer.

But, despite this, we’ll freely admit that Top Gear is an entertaining show. And a large part of what made Top Gear entertaining was its road trips, taking different cars around the world and seeing how they fared in varying conditions. The blend of choppy editing, fast cars and the three hosts means the road trips often resemble a Ken Loach-directed version of The Fast and The Furious, in a good way. If you haven’t seen the show but still like cars, let this be your primer into the world of Top Gear and their soon to launch show, The Grand Tour . The trio’s new show will appear on Amazon Prime from November 18, with the company spending a reported £160 million ($202 million USD) for 36 episodes of the show. To whet your appetite for their triumphant return, here’s a guide to the best road trips and treks ever done by Jezza, Hamster and ‘Captain Slow.’

10 best top gear specials.

For close to 30 seasons, Top Gear has thrilled car lovers with detailed reviews and solid jokes. Adding to the awesomeness are the specials.

  • The trio's journey through Vietnam on motorbikes in the Vietnam Special is a refreshing change from their usual car-centered adventures.
  • The exploration of Bolivia in the Bolivia Special features sensationalized moments and breathtaking scenes along a dangerous mountain road.
  • The Middle East Special erases misconceptions about the region as the presenters navigate through Bethlehem with a hint of paranoia.

Top Gear has been a popular reality TV show for over 30 years, and it's time to talk about the best specials. Jeremy Clarkson, James May, and Richard consistently prove their Midas touch is everlasting. In The Grand Tour special, the car experts maintain their comedic form as they journey across Norway and engage in all forms of mischief. Even though the presenters have adapted to life away from the BBC, their work in Top Gear is still remembered fondly.

On their former show, the trio occasionally went on road trips to different countries where they explored the landscapes as well as the different cultures. With a running time that was longer than the standard 60 minutes of the normal episodes, the specials were always something to look forward to. There have been funny episodes of Top Gear , but which is the best overall?

1 Vietnam Special

Top gear season 12.

While there were no cars involved, the Vietnam Special became one of the best episodes ever . In the episode, the trio travels 1000 miles across Vietnam using motorbikes. The special is rejuvenating due to the lack of cars. Even more interesting is that the decision to go on motorbikes is born out of circumstances, since it turns out the money they were given isn’t enough to buy a car in Vietnam.

That alone brings the discussion of vehicles being too expensive in developing countries. Jeremy getting snubbed while begging motorists to sell their cars to him at a thruway price and the trio bragging about achieving something American soldiers failed to do during the Vietnam War were notable moments, as they crossed the entire country in less than 10 days.

2 Bolivia Special

Top gear season 14.

In this special, the presenters are given £3,500 to buy locally used cars, after which they journey from the Bolivian rainforests to the coast of Chile. Apart from beautifully shot scenes, the sensationalized moments, including one where they move through the Amazon vegetation, look like they are taken from one of the best jungle movies.

Furthermore, there have been many breathtaking Top Gear moments, but the one where they travel across the dangerous 40-mile mountain road known El Camino de la Muerte (Death Road) feels tense . To sprinkle some horror into the proceedings, there are several crosses across the road to serve as a reminder of how many people have died there.

3 USA Special

Top gear season 9.

In the USA special, the presenters travel from Miami to New Orleans in used cars to find out if renting a car is cheaper than owning one. The tendency of Clarkson, May, and Hammond to unapologetically say and do offensive things is one of the major reasons Top Gear stands out from other projects that are considered great car shows. Even better is the never-ending “Britain is better than America” argument on the show, since Top Gear is a British show . This time, the presenters become even more daring in their efforts to offend Americans, making the viewers eager to see what the repercussions will be.

4 Botswana Special

Top gear season 10.

Clarkson, May, and Hammond buy cheap cars and travel across rough Botswana country lanes to prove that the said rides are better than SUVs. Using cars that aren’t designed for off-road use in a country with bad roads is an even bigger test for the presenters, but they manage. Along the way, they showcase their improvisational skills as they strip down their cars to skeletons to reduce weight. Hammond falls in love with his 1963 Opel Kadett (nicknamed Oliver) and is overwhelmed with grief when it sinks.

5 Patagonia Special

Top gear season 22.

In the Patagonia special, the car experts travel from Chile to Argentina in celebration of the 60th anniversary of the tiny-block V8 engine. The special remains memorable because it marks the only time the presenters and crew almost die. All the mayhem in Argentina is triggered by Jeremy’s number plate (H982 FKL), which the locals feel is a reference to the Falklands War. In a scene that could as well mirror that of a thriller, the trio makes a hasty treat to Chile as they are attacked by angry locals.

6 Polar Special

In this special, Clarkson and May attempt to be the first people to reach the Magnetic North Pole using a car. Events are spiced up by the fact that the duo has to race against Hammond, who has opted to use the dog sled (the main means of transport in the arctic). This gives the special a true North Pole experience. In regard to the hilarious ending, everyone gets christened with a funny name after adding “Sir Ranulph” in front of their own name in honor of Sir Ranulph Fienness. Clarkson becomes furious after being denied a chance to brag, since Hammond never makes it to the finish line.

7 Burma Special

Top gear season 21.

In this special, the gearheads travel across Burma in lorries, so they can get to Thailand and build a bridge across the River Kwai. Cinephiles will love the fact that the premise of the special is a nod to one of the best war dramas, The Bridge Across The River Kwai. Given how resourceful they are, Jeremy, Clarkson, and May build a bridge. Since buddies can always be trusted to find all sorts of creative ways to have fun, they decided to engage in a drag race in the capital.

8 Africa Special

Top gear season 19.

In the Africa special, the presenters buy cheap cars and travel across East Africa to find the source of the River Nile. The special lives up to its bold announcement: " You’ve seen David Attenborough's take on Africa, now it’s time to see Top Gear’s take on Africa ." From analyzing the intense traffic jam of Kampala to showcasing the vast landscapes that lead to Lake Victoria, the film takes viewers on a satisfying adventure. The challenges are ever ending, too, with the 3 friends having to convert their cars into bedrooms after lacking a place to sleep and going on a fresh search after realizing that Lake Victoria isn’t actually the source of the Nile.

9 Nepal Special

Top gear season 27.

The only special not to be done by the original trio sees Chris Harris, Paddy McGuinness, and Freddie Flintoff drive through Nepal in £6000 cars. Though the humor that Clarkson and company are known for is lacking, the experts do a great job of analyzing their cars as well as the locations they travel to. Images of the lush scenery remain in the retina, too, and so do the well-constructed roads.

10 Middle East Special

Top gear season 16.

In this special, the presenters recreate the path to Bethlehem. The special does actually erase the misconceptions people have about the Middle East, with the presenters getting to have the time of their lives. What’s better is watching the normally courageous Jeremy become paranoid and insists on making his car bulletproof, just in case. It's one of the best specials on Top Gear .

Various seasons of Top Gear are available for streaming on JustWatch, Prime Video, Peacock, and Netflix.

50 best Top Gear episodes

The popular and long-running show “Top Gear” has a simple premise: test how car manufacturers’ claims stack up against reality. The way the show accomplishes this is as simple as it is varied—send its hosts to different parts of the world with specific types of cars, ranging from rare and high-end vintage editions to contemporary mass-market cars (or “Reasonably Priced Cars,” as the show calls them), to find out just what kind of extremes the cars can handle.

The range of vehicles the show has covered since launching in 2002 is breathtaking. The hosts (James May, Richard Hammond, and Jeremy Clarkson, until the latter was dismissed in 2015) have traveled everywhere from Vietnam to Palm Springs to Myanmar—a country that was largely off-limits to Westerners until several years before that episode was filmed. By providing varied backdrops for vehicle testing, the show gives audiences breathtaking footage of countrysides and cities all over the world that they might not otherwise have the chance to see.

The “Top Gear” hosts (colloquially known as “the boys”) don’t just limit themselves to cars in their wanderings. Episodes of the show have featured everything from motorbikes to ambulances to tertiary adventuring gear such as emergency watches for those whose travels might find them stranded in remote locations. The resultant episodes bring together an astonishing array of gear and scenery in combination.

For a show with such breadth, it’s no surprise there are many fan-favorite episodes to choose from. To narrow down the absolute top of the top for those looking to dip into the show for the first time, or for enthusiasts hoping to go back and relive the show’s best moments, Stacker compiled IMDb data on all “Top Gear” episodes and ranked them according to IMDb user rating as of March 16, 2020, with user votes being used as the tiebreaker.

The Latest in Go Gear From the 2024 Travel Goods Show

The Latest in Go Gear From the 2024 Travel Goods Show

The Travel Goods Show 2024 returned to Las Vegas with a post-COVID bang in March, as industry titans, visionaries and creators gathered to talk travel gear and showcase the latest goods for creating and maintaining efficiencies to make travel more enterprising.

Fueled by the presence of such industry giants as Briggs & Riley, Eagle Creek, Herschel, Osprey, Naftali, Nomatic, and Db Journey, as well as DYI startups solving problems they have had in their own wanderings, the show this year maintained a larger focus on sustainability overall, where in previous years highlights centered on technology.

“People are being more conscious about sustainability, and that’s been a really big shift in the industry over the past five years,” says Travel Goods Association board chair Josh Cross, who started Elios, a portable “smartpower” company he once promoted through the show for power on the go.

“The types of materials, the fabrics, the plastics, the sourcing the manufacturing ... it is all becoming centered around sustainability. That’s because, if you look at the industry as a whole, the travel industry is one of the largest in the world and touches about one in 10 occupations worldwide. So sustainability has to be a critical component of what we do with travel goods now.”

Gone this year were the plethora of luggage trackers, although CUBE was present with a new option for fool-proof tracking through a new subscription model. Gone were the clothing wraps that could layer in a suitcase’s worth of garments to be worn on a plane without added fees. Gone were the jet lag remedies, the embedded luggage chargers, the pop-up portable workstations, the ballooning airline seat converters. Rather, it was a show chastened by three years of lockdown but ready to take on a new breed of traveler—the serious road warrior who wants to get down to the business of traveling.

Top 5 travel products to buy just for the quirk of it.

For the mad airport dash, Modobag may be the solution. Part vehicle, part luggage, it comes with a throttle, brakes, foot pegs, and a memory foam cushioned seat for effortlessly navigating terminals at a speedy 8 mph. The item has approval from the TSA and FAA but weighs 19 pounds before contents—some three times more than conventional bags. Most of that is battery, which charges in 15 minutes. Rides start at $995.

Got the middle seat blues? Strap in with Armbie, a dual-arm support sling made from a satin-link fabric tube that stretches around the torso from just below the ribcage similar to a straitjacket. For those who like to hold their arms close, whether for comfort or because they’re pitched between two line-backers, the snug stretch system allows one to relax on long flights without worry about body creep or muscle fatigue. It comes in four sizes and costs $23.

Hermetically cocoon any flight with this Thermolite recycled-down alternative in the shape of a sleeping bag. Flypod attempts to surround passengers in a cloud of comfort as they fly through the sky or, at minimum, completely cover the seat they are in to reduce any germ or allergen contact. It weighs about 1.5 pounds and fits into a handy sling pack. The extra sense of warmth and security runs $180 before shipping.

Lightload Tea and Towels

Tea in your wallet, towel in your pocket ... what could be sweeter? The tea comes as compressed black tea in which an ounce brews up to five gallons of tea—important when space is low and a party of thirsty teetotalers is in tow. The towels to complement, should this tea break be part of a picnic, come as compressed towel tabs no bigger than a donut hole at half an ounce and expand to 12 by 24 inches. They are made from wood and plant fabric that can be washed and reused. $8.99 buys a three-pack while the tea runs $5.50.

Short people find few mercies, even on planes. For those who may actually fit into their seat but still find feet dangling uncomfortably over the chair, RestAngles offers a fold-flat plastic solution that weighs 12 ounces and fits into a purse. Pop it out, prop it up and it becomes a leg rest made of single-use plastics that comes with its own carry pouch. This Alaska-based kitchen table start-up concept costs $46.

The best Top Gear episodes of all time

Ronan Glon

Top Gear is one of the very few car-themed television shows that’s known outside of the automotive industry. Even if you don’t like cars (heck, even if you don’t drive), there’s a very good chance you’ve heard of it or have seen it.

Trying to kill the Toyota Hilux (season 3, episodes 5 and 6)

Supercars do france (season 3, episode 7), exige tries to evade an apache (season 4, episode 1), ferrari 612 scaglietti race to verbier (season 5, episode 8), amphibious car challenge (season 8, episode 3), u.s. special: $1,000 american car road trip (season 9, episode 3), reliant robin shuttle challenge (season 9, episode 4), homemade stretch limos (season 9, episode 6), polar race special (season 9, episode 8), peel p50, bugatti veyron vs. eurofighter (season 10, episode 3).

  • “Serious” road test of the Ford Fiesta (season 12, episode 6)

Vietnam special (season 12, episode 8)

Bolivia special (season 14, episode 6), africa special (season 19, episode 7).

  • Ferrari F12 TDF review and Ken Block’s Hoonicorn (season 23, episode 3)

The Kazakhstan race (season 24, episode 1)

The avtoros shaman (season 24, episode 7), the 2cv egg challenge (season 25, episode 4).

  • The World’s fastest tractor (season 25, episode 5)

The horse trials (season 25, episode 6)

It achieved this unexpected level of popularity because it doesn’t focus solely on cars and the oily bits that make them move. It puts them into context by looking at the culture surrounding them, at the folks who design them, and at the people who drive them. And, yes, sometimes the hosts modify, race, and completely destroy what they drive. From the Jeremy Clarkson days to the Amazon-led reboot, here’s a look at the best Top Gear episodes of all time. No spoilers, we promise.

Although we had been watching Top Gear for a while before we saw the wanton destruction of the Toyota Hilux, we weren’t yet sold on the show. After this episode, though, we were hooked. Not only were we hugely impressed with the Hilux’s ability to just keep living, but we were also impressed with the creativity of the script and shot selection. On a larger scale, we consider this episode the beginning of the current Top Gear style. Putting a pickup on the roof of a building during a controlled implosion effectively separated modern Top Gear from the previous iteration. We truly believe it was that moment that marked the beginning of what we know now as Top Gear .

Top Gear ‘s hosts spend a lot of time in cheap old beaters, but they also drive amazing supercars to even more amazing destinations. Even that isn’t always glamorous, though, as Clarkson, Hammond, and May found on this road trip through France. The cars — a Ford GT, a Ferrari 430, and a Pagani Zonda — were great, but living with them in the real world proved to be a challenge. From negotiating Paris’ legendarily treacherous traffic to trying to extricate the cars form a cramped parking garage, the Top Gear trio provided a more realistic portrayal of the supercar experience.

This episode combines two of Top Gear ‘s best features: Clarkson’s metaphors (“the Lotus Exige is like putting a Saturn 5 rocket in a food blender”) and insane showdowns. There are a few car vs. military machine face-offs throughout the show’s history, but the Exige vs. Apache is one of the best. Not only do we get to completely nerd out over the Apache’s bonkers weapons systems — it can identify 256 targets from 8 kilometers away, pick the 16 most dangerous, and eliminate all of them — we get to watch the Lotus attempt to evade the helicopter’s missile lock. Does the Exige avoid certain death? Watch and find out.

We can always count on one of the trio to claim that a car is faster than a train, plane, boat, or any other craft from A to B. It’s a  Top Gear  hallmark. This time, it’s Clarkson suggesting the Ferrari 612 Scaglietti can get from the U.K. to Switzerland faster than his co-hosts can get there on a plane. No brainer, right? Obviously, the plane is faster … or is it? See, the catch is that Hammond and May will have to use public transportation to get to and from airports in the U.K. and Switzerland, while Clarkson only has to worry about traffic on the motorways. Can Clarkson’s 6.0-liter V12 grand tourer outrun a passenger jet?

We’ve all dreamt of a car that can transform into a boat, but for some reason, no major manufacturer has put such a vehicle in production. Well, the Top Gear trio has come to the rescue with its own amphibious cars. Predictably, each craft represents its creator’s personality. That means May chose a dainty convertible with a sail, Hammond chose a wonky van with a poorly-engineered propeller, and Clarkson bolted a massive engine to the back of a pickup. What could possibly go wrong? Everything. Everything could go wrong. And it does.

This was the first time the boys made a trek across the pond for a road trip but it certainly hasn’t been the last. Their challenge: Land in Miami and find three American cars for under $1,000 each and drive them to New Orleans. Along the way, they’re beset by complications as well as a series of challenges, including a braking test that sends Hammond’s pickup into an alligator-filled swamp and a run for dear life from some enraged hillbillies. This film might be insulting to Southerners, as it makes them look like murderous, inbred morons. If you can laugh at it, though, it’s a fabulous journey.

One of the funniest segments in Top Gear history is Clarkson’s test of the Reliant Robin — or rather, when  Clarkson rolled the Robin numerous times. However, before that segment aired in season 15, Top Gear used the Robin’s pointy shape as the basis for a Space Shuttle. Not only would the Top Gear crew need to build a rocket, but they’d also need to fly the Robin a few thousand feet in the air and land it safely for use some other time. The hilarity of the situation ensued when Hammond and May realized how expensive and time-consuming the project would be. Unsurprisingly, the pair decided to use cheap parts from model airplanes, but the best part of the clip is learning of all the scientific obstacles impeding their success. It’s funny, sure, but it’s also educational!

You have to love this episode for its pure ridiculousness, as well as its frequent references to the iconic film,  The Great Escape . May puts both an Alfa Romeo and a Saab together to make a limo that is sporty and sensible — complete with an interior sporting a sauna and a replica of the Sistine Chapel. Hammond builds a rear-drive sport limo convertible, and Clarkson builds a Fiat Panda-based two-door limo so long that occupants must use a pull-cart to get to the back seat. It’s funny when the homemade limos are on the track, but when they head into central London, it really gets good.

While all the other episodes on this list are ambitious but rubbish, as the boys like to say, the Polar Special is on another planet altogether. Imagine the sheer audacity required to wonder if your television show could successfully drive a car to the North Pole for the first time in the history of man. That’s exactly what they did. Clarkson and May — full of gin and tonics — race a highly modified Toyota Hilux against Hammond and a team of sled dogs to the top of the Earth. If you only watch one episode of Top Gear in your entire life, make sure it’s this one. It’ll make you laugh and cry and leave you with a sense of wonder like few things in life can. It’s a masterpiece.

This episode was a double-whammy of entertainment, with two different vehicles highlighting the show. First up was the Peel P50 . Clarkson was on the lookout for a small car, but simply wasn’t satisfied with traditional “small” vehicles. Compared to the Peel P50, everything is massive. Clarkson pilots the tiny production vehicle to work at the BBC, but instead of parking his car in the lot, he proceeds to take it in the elevator and drive it around the office (and into the background of a live news broadcast). Afterward, the crew decided a good match-up for the Veyron (top speed of 250 mph) would be the Eurofighter jet (top speed of 1,500 mph). The Veyron would race down a mile drag strip, turn around and race back while the jet would hit an altitude of one mile, and come back down. First across the finish line wins.

“Serious” road test of the Ford Fiesta (season 12, episode 6)

Since its 2002 relaunch, Top Gear hasn’t been about testing everyday cars or focusing on practical considerations like cargo space and fuel economy. Over-the-top stunts make up the bulk of the show’s repertoire now, but not everyone appreciates that the cars on the program are irrelevant to the average driver. To address those critics, Clarkson undertook a thorough road test of the Ford Fiesta back in Series 12. The Fiesta is a sensible small car, but Clarkson ends up doing some not-so-sensible things with it. The exploits rival anything you’ll see in any episode of Top Gear .

Have you ever wished you could road trip through Vietnam on a scooter or motorcycle ? That’s exactly what the boys did in this episode. This special is less about the rickety two-wheeled vehicles they ride and more about the three presenters as they careen through the wildly gorgeous Vietnamese countryside. Along the way, they have custom suits made, which only add to the hilarity. When Clarkson eventually crashes the scooter he barely knows how to operate, however, the trip gets a bit dicey.

Clarkson, Hammond, and May don’t exactly seem equipped to take on the Amazon jungle, the Atacama desert, or Bolivia’s “Death Road” in clapped-out SUVs, and that’s what makes the Bolivia Special one of the best. It’s a genuinely extreme test of man and machine, with some of the toughest conditions ever featured on Top Gear . In this case, it’s not just the hosts’ incompetence that makes it seem unlikely that they’ll succeed; it really is a battle against the terrain. Plus, at one point May attacks Clarkson with a machete which, as Hammond points out, isn’t something you normally see on other shows.

Yet another two-part special from the Top Gear trio sends the   boys in search of the source of the Nile River. James chooses a Volvo 850R as his automotive companion, Clarkson picks a BMW 528i Touring, and Hammond (smartly) goes with a Subaru Impreza WRX Estate. During their journey, each member is forced to turn their vehicle into a camper, which meant adding weight, and, in Hammond’s case, a toilet seat on his hood. After initially failing to find the source, the trio ventures further and has to build a ferry to cross a crocodile-infested river. At the end of the journey, the boys agree to race to the Nile’s origin because only one of them will be remembered for their accomplishment.

Ferrari F12 TDF review and Ken Block’s Hoonicorn (season 23, episode 3)

The 23rd season of Top Gear is also the first without Clarkson, Hammond, and May. For most fans, that meant the new hosts had huge shoes to fill. As we know, Chris Evans didn’t make it to season 24, but this clip of Chris Harris reviewing the Ferrari F12 TDF shows why he stuck around. Not only can Harris drive well, but he keeps the audience engaged as he explores an insane supercar. This episode also features Ken Block tearing around the streets of London in an 800-horsepower Hoonicorn Mustang, under the pretense of giving Matt LeBlanc a “tour of the city.” It’s Gymkhana with Top Gear ‘s budget. What’s not to love?

Hosts Matt LeBlanc, Rory Reid, and Chris Harris travel to Kazakhstan to find out who makes the most reliable car. The trio acquires a W210-generation Mercedes-Benz E220D, a Volvo V70, and a London taxi cab before embarking on an epic road trip that takes them through a wide variety of terrain and weather conditions. Surviving a long road trip is easy as pie compared to what LeBlanc, Reid, and Harris have in mind for these three high-mileage machines. Tourism, racing, and automotive geekery are all on the menu.

When asked to name a big car, most people will think for a second and say something along the lines of “Chevrolet Suburban!” or Hummer!” The Avtoros Shaman that Matt LeBlanc is driving in the seventh episode of Top Gear ‘s 24th season makes the Suburban look quaint and city-friendly. It’s a mammoth of a vehicle with eight wheels wrapped by humongous tires. It was designed in Russia to serve as a rescue vehicle in hard-to-reach places like Siberia, so the people who created it didn’t really envision it driving on public roads in the U.K. And yet, that’s where LeBlanc’s test takes place.

As Europe recovered from WWII, French manufacturer Citroen aimed to provide a dependable car for the masses with their 2CV. The designers imagined a vehicle that could carry fresh eggs in a basket over uneven ground without even one egg breaking – and the theory is that they succeeded. No spoilers here, but you can probably imagine the hijinx that ensue as Harris and LeBlanc test that theory.

The World’s fastest tractor (season 25, episode 5)

Picture the British countryside: You might imagine rolling hills, trees, a few locals walking the footpaths, some sheep maybe. But traffic—you’d never expect traffic. Surprisingly, traffic on these quaint British roads can back up quite badly on account of tractors going at slow speeds on the road. This all-too-common problem gives Matt LeBlanc the bright idea to build the fastest tractor in the world. Appropriately named the Track-Tor, he outfits it with a 500hp Chevrolet V8 engine and sets out to discover what happens when you mix farming with speed.

In “The Horse Trials,” we get to see what happens when you take a car through a racecourse made for horses. In Season 25, Top Gear took things to the next level by putting a Volvo XC60 , a Land Rover Range Rover Velar, and an Alfa Romeo Stelvio to the test in their very own horse trials. Picture a modern SUV completing an off-road obstacle course, and you’ll have some idea what hilarity results.

Stealing a car is no longer as simple as learning how to hot-wire an ignition, but technology isn't driving the number of car thefts down. Thieves are simply learning new ways to drive off in your ride. If you routinely park in an unsafe area, or if you regularly leave valuable belongings in the cabin, we suggest investing in an anti-theft device. They're not always cheap, but the peace of mind they bring is priceless. Here are the best anti-theft devices for 2020. Steering wheel lock

Steering wheel locks are one of the oldest and best-known theft prevention devices on the market today. A steering wheel lock attaches to the steering wheel of the car to lock it in place, preventing someone from driving away. There are two main styles for this lock. The first goes across the steering wheel horizontally and attaches to the wheel at the 3 o’clock and 9 o’clock positions. On one side the lock extends farther, preventing the wheel from turning very far. The second style attaches to the top of the wheel with the end extending over the front dash to prevent the wheel from turning. The Club is one of the most popular models.

Modern vehicles’ sophisticated electronics go far beyond the simple car mechanics most of us grew up with. Now, OBD, or on-board diagnostics, diagnoses almost every issue within your vehicle. Whether your engine is running low on oil or a spring is out of place, the OBD steps in to diagnose the issue.

Having a feature packed infotainment system built into your car can be a great asset, as long as you have the ability to figure it out. Android Auto manages to be useful, filled with useful features, such as Google Maps and more, yet it’s uncomplicated and straightforward. Its smartphone-like screen is intuitive and easy to learn.

Most carmakers sell at least one model compatible with Android Auto, and more manufacturers are adding the system all the time. If you’re looking for a vehicle that already features Android Auto, or want to see if your current car is compatible with it, take a look at this list. If you add this feature, it may be seen as a specific trim which could tack on an extra charge.

I’m a Former Lululemon Employee, and I’ve Got My Eye on These 16 Pieces From the New Travel Collection

Travel + Leisure / Tyler Roeland

It’s no secret that Lululemon’s beyond-comfortable athleisure has become a favorite of travelers. As a travel writer, I see Everywhere Belt Bags and Wunderlust Weekenders on planes, trains, and the ground everywhere from Australia’s white sand beaches to Europe’s cobblestone streets. And when I worked at Lululemon in a past life, I sold thousands of buttery-soft bottoms to shoppers in pursuit of the perfect pair of travel pants .

Now, nearly 30 years after its founding in Canada, the world-famous brand has dropped a huge new travel collection . Their women’s travel capsule alone features 29 pieces (starting at just $28), and their entire travel collection for her has nearly 200 pieces. They cover every category from jackets to jumpsuits. Meanwhile, Lululemon’s men’s travel collection features more than 150 pieces ranging from board shorts to button-down shirts. Accessories-wise, think luggage, organizers, key chains, and packing cubes.

Feeling overwhelmed by all the options? I’ve got you. While shopping for two upcoming trips to Brisbane and The Big Apple , I recently took inventory of all of Lululemon’s new travel products. It’s almost as if I’m still on their payroll. But I’m not. Lululemon is just one of my love languages. That said, you don’t need to know the difference between the Align jogger and the Adapted State jogger to appreciate a little Lulu on your travels. Whether you’re in the market for a packable backpack or a comfortable pair of white sneakers , see below for the 16 travel-friendly Lululemon pieces I’d prioritize packing.

Lululemon Dance Studio Relaxed-fit Mid-rise Cargo Pant

Dance Studio is a misnomer. This lightweight, mid-rise cargo pant is just at home in an airport. For starters, it has a looser fit and adjustable drawstring waist, something I appreciate when I’m bloated or just want to feel comfy (but also look cute). This pant also has more pockets than previous versions — Lululemon has been selling the Dance Studio pant for more than a decade —  and the hems are cinchable for days when you want the jogger look. This new version is available in nine colors, but if you’re okay with the previous iteration, you can get it on sale for just $89 in Belgian Blue .

“Fabulous for running errands and travel,” is the title of one recent review. Note: most shoppers say these pants run big.

Lululemon Cityverse Women’s Sneaker

What happens when a brand, well-known for its buttery soft fabrics and four-way stretch, designs comfortable footwear? You get this stylish sneaker designed for travel days when you easily hit 10,000 steps before lunch. The Cityverse currently comes in four colors. I’m obsessed with white sneakers that go with every outfit, but I’m also tempted to get a pair in Precocious Pink after having watched Barbie . While these shoes look simple, they boast 3D-molded support and cushioning, and the rubber outsole is cupped. That helps with traction, especially on Europe’s well-worn cobblestone streets.

“I walked about 18-20kms per day in these shoes and had zero [issues] with sore feet,” wrote one satisfied shopper, who continued to say, “… also, no sock slippage (I find some shoes ‘pull’ socks into them)! I highly recommend these shoes.”

Lululemon Align Leggings High-rise Pant

My friends joke that I have more pairs of Align leggings than I do jeans. They’re not wrong. Like the Align joggers I never leave home without , the Align High-rise Pant is made of Lululemon’s signature Nulu fabric. While it’s far from sheer and it holds up for years, it’s so soft and weightless it almost feels like you aren’t even wearing pants! This popular pant is also ideal for travel because it offers just the right amount of stretch, and thanks to the Lycra, it never loses its shape. I hate when I wear leggings multiple days in a row and the butt starts to sag. Currently, it comes in 13 colors and four different lengths.

In fact, the Align High-rise is such a hit that it has almost 10,000 five-star ratings. “My most comfortable travel leggings,” wrote one shopper who acknowledged that they’re not cheap but deemed them “100 percent worth the price.”

Lululemon Everywhere Belt Bag 1L

If you haven’t seen Lululemon’s ubiquitous Everywhere Belt Bag on the streets yet, you’re probably living under a rock. Just kidding. But seriously; this game-changing accessory has nearly 19,000 five-star ratings. Currently, it comes in 13 colors (it’s also on sale in True Navy for $29 ). While it’s one-size-fits-all, the hip belt is adjustable. You can even wear it cross-body if you want. Personally, I appreciate the water-repellent fabric and the waist-facing hidden stash pocket I know no one but me has access to.

“Wish I had bought it sooner,” wrote one shopper who comfortably wore theirs on vacation and spotted at least 10 other people wearing the same bag every day. (When something is this popular, you know it’s worth it.)

Lululemon Softstreme High-rise Midi Skirt

The few times I’ve been fortunate enough to fly business class, I’ve wanted to be comfy but also dressed up. This new midi skirt would have been perfect! It’s made of a ridiculously soft fabric featuring four-way stretch. But the best part? It doesn’t wrinkle easily. Actually, the skirt’s hand pockets (with hidden card sleeves) may be the highlight. And it’s highly versatile. While it’s comfortable enough to lounge in, it’s also classy enough to wear on a dinner date.

“This skirt goes with just about every top and shoe in my wardrobe and can be dressed up or down,” wrote one shopper who says it’s “great for travel.”

Lululemon Relaxed-fit Twill Blazer

Many travelers have a love/hate relationship with blazers when they’re traveling. They love the look but hate the fit. For that reason, Lululemon designed this relaxed-fit blazer. It’s still tailored — so it looks sleek and has structure — but it’s not as constricting, making it easier to layer over tops and overall comfier to wear. In keeping with the athleisure theme, the twill fabric wicks away sweat, and there’s a back vent for “added mobility” and breathability. There are also four pockets: two interior welt pockets, and two on the front.

While it looks worthy of the boardroom, several shoppers praise how well this blazer works for travel. One wrote, “It’s lightweight and doesn’t crease,” while another traveler said it’s “a great quality blazer for the price.”

Lululemon Softstreme High-rise Pant

For economy, I’m more than happy to rock these pants made with the same silky soft material as the skirt above. While I normally wear joggers, this wide-leg look is definitely trending right now. And thanks to the high-rise fit and the way the fabric drapes, these pants are far from frumpy. That said, the drawcord waist and front pockets make them practical.

“They look nice for almost any occasion,” wrote one shopper who deemed them the most comfortable pants they own. “They will be my travel pants for sure as they don’t show wrinkles, even after being folded up for a few days.”

Lululemon Men’s License to Train Tank Top

It may be designed for training, but this best-selling breathable base layer is also ideal for travel because it’s made for “more wearing, less washing.” Since the moisture-wicking fabric features the brand’s anti-stink Silverescent technology, odor-causing bacteria has an extremely hard time growing. My boyfriend recently wore this on a 17-hour travel day flying home from the tropics, and I swear he smelled as good when we landed back in Montana as he did when we left.

“I got so many compliments in a few hours,” wrote one shopper who owns it in multiple colors. It’s currently available in five colors, and an older version is on sale in Aero Blue for $49 .

Lululemon Men’s Textured Full-zip Hooded Jacket

“Travel-friendly” is what the designers of Lululemon’s newest men’s outer layer were going for. Naturally, they made this piece extremely lightweight with plenty of pockets and adjustable vents. Whether you’re on a plane with broken AC or a plane blasting the AC, a little airflow can be major when it comes to regulating temperature. I also like that the hood and hem are cinch-able, which keeps out moisture. However, since this jacket is made of water-resistant nylon, you don’t need to worry too much about getting wet.

Because it’s so new, the Men’s Textured Full-zip Hooded Jacket, available in black, only has one review. While the shopper wishes it wasn’t so thin, they like other features. “The color of the jacket is almost pitch black which I really like,” they wrote. “The pockets are also very deep, so you won’t have to worry about items falling out of them.”

Lululemon Wunderlust Weekender Bag 48L

I bow to whoever invented the wheeled carry-on. Still, I find shorter sojourns and road trips are more doable with a duffle bag. With 48 liters of space, the Wunderlust Weekender holds 3 to 4 days’ worth of clothes, and thanks to the adjustable external straps, I can attach extras like my shoes, yoga mat, and jacket to the outside. I also love the exterior padded pocket which is perfect for my laptop, and all the other pockets for smaller valuables. Like most of Lululemon’s products, this bag is made of a water-resistant material that sheds moisture, and it’s versatile, something I appreciate because it’s not cheap.

“Such an amazing weekender/gym/ travel bag,” declared one shopper. “It’s stylish and functional — couldn’t recommend enough.”

Lululemon 2-in-1 Travel Duffle Backpack 45L

If you want a duffle that you can also wear on your back, opt for this slightly smaller dual-purpose piece that features hidden backpack straps. Like the Wunderlust Weekender, it’s also made of water-repellent nylon and has a removable shoulder strap. Pocket-wise, it’s similar. There’s a padded pocket large enough for a 16-inch computer, a stash pocket for straps you’re not using, and even an external water bottle pocket, so you have easy access to hydration and don’t need to worry about water leaking in your bag.

“Easy to run through the airport with it on my back, and happy to fit it into the overhead compartment,” wrote one shopper who says it’s the “only” bag they need for travel.

Lululemon Travel Packing Cubes 3-pack

Even though I buy luggage with plenty of pockets, I still rely on packing cubes to keep my clothes organized. This set features three different sizes of cubes. The smallest is great for underwear and socks, the medium is what I keep my tops in, and the largest is perfect for bottoms and bulkier items. Like most of the other packing cubes I’ve tested, these feature mesh, so air can escape (which helps them compress). What sets them apart is the fact they have side handles so they’re easier to carry. They also feature double zippers, a nice added touch that comes in handy if you tend to overpack.

“I travel for work 365 days out of the year and love these cubes,” wrote one shopper. “You can fill them up and zip them down to a smaller size which is very helpful.” Note: most negative reviews say the quality is great, they just wish these bags were bigger.

Lululemon Travel Laundry Bag

Gone are the days when hotels had disposable plastic laundry bags I could “borrow” for my dirty or damp stuff. These days, most are opting for reusable bags (as they should). But because we can’t take them with us, it’s time we invest in our own. Unlike most heavy-duty canvas bags hotels use, Lululemon’s laundry bag is made of a water-repellent polyester that weighs half as much despite still being able to handle a few days’ worth of clothes. I also love that this bag consists of two big zippered compartments. Use one for really dirty stuff and another for pieces you’ve already worn but may need to wear again.

“Smart design and compact for traveling,” summed up one shopper who uses theirs for business travel.

Lululemon Travel Organizer

Picture vertical packing cubes, all attached together, that you can hang in a closet to create floating shelves, and you have this handy travel organizer. In total, all three compartments (two of which are zippered) offer 26 liters of storage. That’s about enough for a few pairs of pants, several shirts, and all of your socks and underwear. Even when it’s filled to the max, it doesn’t take up much space thanks to the compression straps that help pack it down. And when not in use, it folds up, so it’s easy to store.

“Keeps me organized and makes the packing process a breeze,” found one shopper who called it “the perfect travel buddy.”

Lululemon Packable Backpack 32L

As much as I adore this $25 foldable backpack I found at Amazon , I can’t deny that Lululemon’s version is much more my style. I love how sleek it looks. Available in black and grey, it goes with pretty much everything. And despite looking professional enough to wear on a business trip, it’s extremely practical. For starters, it has adjustable shoulder straps, a trolley strap that attaches to your suitcase handle, and plenty of pockets including one that turns into a packable pouch for storing the backpack when it’s not in use. Filled to the brim, this bag can hold up to 32 liters. But when it’s packed down, it takes up about as much space as a T-shirt.

“Slaying it” is the title of a review left by a shopper who wrote, “It’s super stylish, durable, and incredibly convenient.”

Lululemon Roll-up Travel Toiletries Kit

In a couple of weeks, I’m traveling on New Zealand’s TranzApline Train , where I plan on using this hangable roll-up toiletries kit. Like planes, most trains have limited counter space in their bathrooms. And because this kit is made of a water-repellent fabric, I don’t need to worry about accidentally splashing water on it. While it lays flat when not in use, and you can obviously hang it up to access your items, this kit also features snaps on the end, so you can stand it upright. It has three zippered compartments, and many shoppers say they love it for storing tech accessories, too.

“It helps keep my items organized and is easy to grab all my items in one swoop as I move around the hotel, or when visiting someone’s house,” wrote one shopper who called it “the perfect travel companion.”

A total solar eclipse will cross North America on Monday , offering millions a rare opportunity to see afternoon skies temporarily darken as the moon blocks the face of the sun.

Tune into NBC News NOW as Lester Holt hosts a two-hour special at 2 p.m. ET Monday from Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

The eclipse's path fortuitously cuts across Mexico, 15 U.S. states and a small part of eastern Canada. In all other states in the continental U.S., viewers will be treated to a partial solar eclipse, with the moon appearing to take a bite out of the sun and obscuring part of its light.

Here’s everything you need to know about the rare celestial event.

What is a solar eclipse?

Solar eclipses occur when the sun, moon and Earth align. The moon passes between Earth and sun, temporarily blocking the sun’s light and casting a shadow on Earth.

A total solar eclipse is when the moon fully obscures the sun, whereas a partial solar eclipse means it blocks just a portion of the sun’s face.

Solar eclipses occur only with the new moon. Because the moon’s orbit around Earth is tilted, the three bodies don’t always line up in a way that creates an eclipse.

“Imagine if the moon’s orbit were in the plane of Earth’s orbit around the sun — if that were the case, then every new moon, you’d have a total solar eclipse and every full moon, you’d have a lunar eclipse,” Neil DeGrasse Tyson, director of the Hayden Planetarium at the American Museum of Natural History, told NBC News. “So, because things don’t always align, it lends to the rarity of the event and the specialness of the event.”

Where and when will the eclipse be visible?

This year’s eclipse will follow a slightly wider path over more populated areas of the continental U.S. than other total solar eclipses have in the recent past.

NASA estimates that 31.6 million people live within what’s known as the path of totality, where the total solar eclipse will be visible. An additional 150 million people live within 200 miles of the path, according to the agency.

The path travels through Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine. Tiny parts of Michigan and Tennessee will also be able to witness totality if conditions are clear.

After the eclipse crosses into Canada, it will pass over southern Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Cape Breton, at the eastern end of Nova Scotia.

Those outside the path of totality can still take part in the astronomical event by viewing a partial solar eclipse — visible throughout all 48 states of the contiguous U.S. — or a NASA livestream.

The timing, including how long totality lasts, depends on the location, but some spots will see the moon fully cover the sun for up to 4 minutes and 28 seconds.

Below is a list of timings for some cities along the path of totality, as  provided by NASA . A number of other resources, including NationalEclipse.com  and  TimeandDate.com , can also help people plan.

  • Dallas: Partial eclipse begins at 12:23 p.m. CT and totality at 1:40 p.m.
  • Little Rock, Arkansas: Partial eclipse begins at 12:33 p.m. CT and totality at 1:51 p.m.
  • Cleveland: Partial eclipse begins at 1:59 p.m. ET and totality at 3:13 p.m.
  • Buffalo, New York: Partial eclipse begins at 2:04 p.m. ET and totality at 3:18 p.m.
  • Lancaster, New Hampshire: Partial eclipse begins at 2:16 p.m. ET and totality at 3:27 p.m.

How to safely view a solar eclipse

It is never safe to gaze directly at the sun, even when it is partly or mostly covered by the moon. Special eclipse glasses or  pinhole projectors  are required to safely view solar eclipses and prevent eye damage. Failing to take the proper precautions can result in severe eye injury,  according to NASA .

Eclipse glasses are thousands of times darker than normal sunglasses and specially made to enable wearers to look at the sun during these kinds of celestial events.

Sky-watchers should also never view any part of the sun through binoculars, telescopes or camera lenses unless they have specific solar filters attached. Eclipse glasses should not be used with these devices, as they will not provide adequate protection.

However, during the few minutes of totality, when the moon is fully blocking the sun, it is safe to look with the naked eye.

Image: Tyler Hanson

Beware of fake eclipse glasses. On legitimate pairs, the lenses should have a silver appearance on the front and be black on the inside. The manufacturer’s name and address should be clearly labeled, and they should not be torn or punctured. Check, as well, for the ISO logo and the code “IS 12312-2” printed on the inside.

If you don’t have eclipse glasses, you can make a homemade pinhole projector, which lets sunlight in through a small hole, focuses it and projects it onto a piece of paper, wall or other surface to create an image of the sun that is safe to look at.

All you need is two pieces of white cardboard or plain white paper, aluminum foil and a pin or thumbtack. Cut a 1- to 2-inch square or rectangle out of the center of a piece of white paper or cardboard. Tape aluminum foil over that cut-out shape, then use a pin or thumbtack to poke a tiny hole in the foil.

During the eclipse, place a second piece of white paper or cardboard on the ground as a screen and hold the projector with the foil facing up and your back to the sun. Adjusting how far you hold the projector from the second piece of paper will alter the size of the image on the makeshift screen.

What to look for while viewing the total solar eclipse

For people along the path of totality, there are some fun milestones to keep track of as the total solar eclipse unfolds.

As the eclipse progresses and the sun gets thinner in the sky, it will start to get eerily dark, according to Tyson.

The "diamond ring effect" is shown following totality of the solar eclipse at Palm Cove in Australia's Tropical North Queensland in 2012.

When the last beams of sunlight are about to become obscured, look out for the “diamond ring effect”: The sun’s atmosphere will appear as an illuminated halo, and the last light still visible will look like the diamond of a giant ring.

As the sunlight decreases even further, an effect known as Baily’s beads will be created by the moon’s rugged terrain. Tiny “beads” of light will be visible for only a few seconds around the dark moon, as the last bits of sunlight peer through the moon’s mountains and valleys.

When the moon is fully blocking the sun, it is safe to remove eclipse glasses and look at the total solar eclipse with the naked eye.

The Bailey's Beads effect is seen as the moon makes its final move over the sun during the total solar eclipse on Monday, August 21, 2017 above Madras, Oregon.

Some lucky sky-watchers may even catch a glimpse of a comet .

Comet 12P/Pons-Brooks — nicknamed the “ devil comet ” because an eruption last year left it with two distinct trails of gas and ice in the shape of devil horns — is currently visible from the Northern Hemisphere as it swings through the inner solar system.

The comet can be seen in the early evenings by gazing toward the west-northwest horizon. During the eclipse, when skies darken during totality, it may be possible to see the comet near Jupiter, but its visibility will depend on whether it’s in the middle of an outburst and thus brighter than normal.

Most likely, all eyes will be on the alignment of the moon and sun.

“Most people won’t even notice,” Tyson said. “But if you know to look, it’s there.”

When is the next solar eclipse?

The next total solar eclipse will be in 2026, but it will mostly pass over the Arctic Ocean, with some visibility in Greenland, Iceland, Portugal and northern Spain. In 2027, a total solar eclipse will be visible in Spain and a swath of northern Africa.

The next total solar eclipse visible from North America will be in 2033, but only over Alaska. Then in 2044, a total solar eclipse will cross Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, parts of Canada and Greenland.

The next total solar eclipse to cross the continental U.S. coast-to-coast in will occur in 2045. The path of totality for that eclipse will cut through California, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Kansas, Texas, Arkansas, Missouri, Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama, Georgia and Florida.

2024 Masters odds, picks, golf predictions: Tiger Woods projection from same model that called last 2 winners

Tiger woods, an 82-time pga tour champion, is expected to be part of the 2024 masters field at augusta national golf club.

tiger-woods-pnc-usatsi.jpg

Tiger Woods already holds a number of records at Augusta National and can add another at the 2024 Masters. Woods has made the cut in 23 consecutive appearances at the year's first major, tied with Gary Player and Fred Couples for most all-time. Woods' streak is still active, so he can move into sole possession of first place by making the cut at the Masters 2024. After being on the cut line in last year's tournament before withdrawing due to injury, Woods has aspirations this year of doing more. The 2024 Masters schedule begins Thursday, April 11 from Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Ga.

Woods is a longshot at 160-1 according to the 2024 Masters odds, the same as longtime rival Phil Mickelson. The 2024 Masters favorite is World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler at 5-1, followed by Rory McIlroy at 10-1 and Jon Rahm at 13-1. Before locking in your 2024 Masters picks or Tiger Woods props, be sure to see the golf predictions and projected leaderboard from the proven computer model at SportsLine .

SportsLine's proprietary model, built by DFS pro Mike McClure, has been red-hot since the PGA Tour resumed in June 2020. In fact, the model is up nearly $9,500 on its best bets since the restart, nailing tournament after tournament.

McClure's model predicted Scottie Scheffler would finish on top of the leaderboard at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and The Players Championship this season. McClure also included Hideki Matsuyama in his best bets to win the 2024 Genesis Invitational. That bet hit at +9000, and for the entire tournament, McClure's best bets returned nearly $1,000.

The model also predicted Jon Rahm would be victorious at the 2023 Sentry Tournament of Champions and The American Express. At the 2023 Masters, the model was all over Rahm's second career major victory heading into the weekend. Rahm was two strokes off the lead heading into the third round, but the model still projected him as the winner. It was the second straight Masters win for the model, which also nailed Scheffler winning in 2022.

In addition, McClure's best bets included Nick Taylor (70-1) winning the 2023 RBC Canadian Open, Jason Day (17-1) winning outright at the 2023 AT&T Byron Nelson, and Rickie Fowler (14-1) finishing on top of the leaderboard at the 2023 Rocket Mortgage Classic.

This same model has also nailed a whopping 10 majors entering the weekend. Anyone who has followed it has seen massive returns.

Now that the Masters 2024 field is set, SportsLine simulated the tournament 10,000 times, and the results were surprising. Head to SportsLine now to see the projected leaderboard.

Top 2024 Masters predictions

One major surprise the model is calling for at the 2024 Masters: Patrick Cantlay, a 28-1 longshot, makes a strong run at the title. He's a target for anyone looking for a huge payday. Cantlay has made the cut in all seven tournaments he has played this year, with his best finish being a fourth-place run at the Genesis Invitational in mid-February.

Cantlay ranks in the top 30 on the PGA Tour in birdie average and approach shots within 200 yards, and iron play is always crucial at Augusta National. Cantlay is still seeking his first major championship, but he finished ninth at the Masters in 2019 and 14th last year. He added two more top-15 finishes at the PGA Championship and U.S. Open last season, so he has been knocking on the door of a breakthrough victory.

The model has also examined where Tiger Woods finishes. The 15-time major champion last played competitively at the Genesis Invitational in February, when he withdrew after one round due to an illness. Reaching the finish line of a tournament has been an issue for Woods since returning from his Feb. 2021 car crash. Over the seven ensuing competitive events, he's played all four rounds just three times, while also withdrawing three times and missing one cut.

However, no one knows Augusta quite like Woods, and while full-timers on tour have to go through the grind of weekly tournaments, Woods can focus his attention on this event. He's shot under par in all four rounds of a single Masters tournament a record five times, while no other golfer has more than three. He also owns the all-time lowest scoring average at Augusta of 71.1 (min. 40 rounds), and only Jack Nicklaus (15) has more top-fives at the course than Woods' 12.  The model just locked in its Tiger Woods Masters picks here .

How to make 2024 Masters picks

The model is also targeting six golfers with Masters odds of 20-1 or longer to make a strong run at the title. Anyone who backs these longshots could hit it big. You can only see the model's PGA picks here .

Who will win the 2024 Masters, which longshots will stun the golfing world, and where will Tiger Woods finish? Check out the Masters 2024 odds below, then visit SportsLine to see the projected Masters leaderboard, all from the model that's nailed 10 golf majors, including the last two Masters winners .
