Generally accepted where other credit/debit cards are accepted. Only had a couple of occasions when it wasn’t able to be used, eg a theatre in New York - had to be a credit card to purchase tickets. Used in NY and in Norway so far and not had any problems to speak of. The biggest problem was initially trying to add funds in the US but the problem was with my phone roaming, not the card/app. Doesn’t allow for Norwegian Krone so we switched to Euros from US dollars as some shops in Norway accepted Euros. It’s easy to switch funds between currencies. Heading to Rome next and have loaded more Euros - fingers crossed it will be accepted with no problems. I wouldn’t recommend it as your only option but it’s definitely worth having as your main card.

Developer Response ,

Thank you for your kind review. We hope you continue to enjoy the benefits of your Hays Travel Money Card

Brilliant card to use abroad

Instead of using your own card abroad, you can use the Hays travel card you can see on the app how much money you’ve got, and you can also keep a check on the money being used, easier than trying to access your own bank abroad. So if you need to use the card abroad, use the travel card and once you are home, you can transfer the money back to your own account or I have used the card back home in the UK after transferring the money back to sterling, well recommended
Thank you for your kind review and feedback. We hope you continue to enjoy the benefits of your Hays Travel Money Card

Good until it goes wrong

Just used this on one trip so far. Whilst in the country I was visiting it was great to know that I wasn’t attracting exorbitant fees and it was all smooth. That was until I tried to top up my funds and it kept going wrong. I phoned the helpline and the only advice they had was to try from a computer browser. (Rather than in the app) I did and I still had no luck. The helpline suggested that I tried calling my own bank. I did that, I should also at this point declare that I work within the payment card industry. I was able to get my bank to trace exactly what was happening. We did see the attempted transaction. However Mastercard was not responding to the 3D secure challenge (a form of 2Factor verification) This left me having to use my normal debit card. I couldn’t top up my travel card. It sort of left me disappointed that the Hays side of things couldn’t give me answers and caused me to have bank charges that should’ve been avoided. Otherwise it would have been five stars. A bit of advice if you are considering this card. Check before travelling that you can top up from your source of funds.
Sorry to hear to hear you have experienced issue with the App, Mastercard have been carrying out intermittent maintenance which could have affected the App verification function. If you can send full details of the issues including any error messages to [email protected] they will investigate this further for you as to exactly why this has happened.

YAll the currency suppliers we show on our website are FCA regulated and we also carry out our own checks. We do however advise all customers to conduct their own due diligence and checks.

Are the rates always the same on the supplier website as on the Compare Travel Cash site?

We constantly update our exchange rates as they change for each supplier, and whilst we try to do this in almost real-time, there will be times when we our data is slightly out of date (in normal circumstances not more than 1 minute).

How can I sell my unused travel currency online?

To exchange your unused travel currency, fill in the form on the currency buyback company website and print the order details form and send it together with your currency to the currency company. The equivalent Sterling pounds wills be transferred into your bank within a few days.

How long does it take to receive the money in my bank account?

Typically a few days.

How up to date are your tourist exchange rates?

Our tourist rates are virtually realtime, we update our tourist rates approximatly every minute at least.

Why do the tourist exchange rates change so often?

The foreign exchange market is always open, so exchange rates are constantly moving, suppliers react to this and periodically set their tourist exchange rates based on what the market dictates.

Can I get better tourist exchange rates if I go direct?

The simple answer is no, in fact we have preferential rates from some suppliers so you will hopefully save money when using our site to find the best tourist exchange rates.

If I buy now from a supplier will they honour the tourist exchange rate at the point of order?

Yes, as long as you adhere to a suppliers terms and conditions, some suppliers accept bank transfers so they may need to receive the money in a certain time period to guaranatee any tourist rate you ordered. The best advice is to review the terms and conditions on the website of supplier you choose.

3 April 2024

Ordered a currency card

Purchased currency card, used in Turkey, New York and Cyprus so far. Love being able to keep track of spending, check balance and top up via the App. The minimum app top us is £50 and the exchange rates are very good, i get regular emails regarding rate sales to. All in all a very good product.

Cant top this card up tried many times without luck rubbish!!!

13 March 2024

Couldn't top up the card

10 March 2024

I don’t even want to give this rubbish card one star.

We loaded our card prior to leaving UK and partner had linked card. Lots of issues. But whilst away, we only ms aged to top up once. After that, an error message constantly came up. The online chat facility only appeared twice, but was told to ring UK number. That number didn’t work, nor the other one offered by the phones automated message. Second time, I was told to ring a number in South Africa where we were staying. I shouldn’t have to be ringing Hayes whilst away on holiday to sort out their problematic card. In the end we had to resort to using bank and credit cards, which defeated the point of having a travel card in the first place.

I e mailed them whilst away too but no apology or explanation forthcoming. Dreadful customer service!

Save yourselves a whole lot of stress and DON’T get one of these cards!!!

jennifer moore

6 March 2024

Dreadful experience using this card. What we had put on prior to leaving the UK, worked well. We even managed one top up. After that it was all

Downhill. Not able to top up. The chat facility only worked once and from that told ring uk number which didn’t work. Given another four digit number which also didn’t work. Still unable to top up so resorted to good old bank cards with charges. DO NOT USE!

4 March 2024

What is the point of a travel card you can’t top up! Useless thing. Rang the number given (from South Africa, not cheap), told that number no longer works. It gave another number with four digits..that didn’t work either. Will have to use our credit card! Complete waste of time. I’m very angry.

23 February 2024

Bought £205 worth of Hungarian forints

Bought Hungarian forints in local Hays branch. Thought rate sounded low compared to rates i had seen on line but i hadnt fully researched it and assumed rates I had looked at were business rates as opposed to the tourist rate. They weren't! When I got home and checked Hays own website the rate was 30 florint higher per pound sterling than that I had received. Proceeded to try and contact Hays via their online 'live chat' support only to be told that many things affect rate (even on same day!?) and from branch to branch! So from this one can only deduce that local branch managers can make up their exchange rates. I would suggest this leaves things open to significant abuse. I have used Hays because they maintain a high street presence and felt I was supporting local jobs - but no more. Will use online sources in future

1 February 2024

Have used my money card in New York, Greece, Australia & New Zealand and couldn't fault it! Used it in various places - restaurants, bars, train stations, on a ferry and in shops! Would highly recommend.

29 January 2024

Bought £155 worth of Turkish lira

Bought the Turkish Lira from Hays in the Galleries Washington to spend on holiday not to save it and bring it back to them duh!.Should have read the reviews fi back to Hays duh! .Wished I had read the reviews first, they should explain more clearly there is a charge to bring the money you spend on holiday back duh!.I feeled conned and cheated and will not be back to Hays.

22 January 2024

Wow absolutely rubbish and feeling very apprehensive about using this card on holiday in the next two weeks. Have had bank accounts blocked after trying to top up this card. Not able to top up at all as it comes up with errors all the time. get told by Hays staff it’s a great card but feeling like been mugged off with taking out a duff system in having money for holiday!!!! Wanting a stress free holiday but I think this will be nothing but worry and stress between me and wife!!!!

George Lyle

7 January 2024

The website says if you buy a card online or in branch they will add £10. I bought on line two weeks ago still no £10. My advice is don’t buy if you expect the additional £19

3 January 2024

Put euros on in shop after a sales pitch to take a card,

.. now I’m in spin or it won’t allow me to top up from bank or credit cards just comes up error.. waste of time.

Credit Card Swipe Fees Are Going Down. Are Points Going With Them?

A new agreement by Visa and Mastercard to reduce fees charged to merchants may drain the lucrative rewards that grant free travel to many credit card users.

A close-up photograph of someone inserting their Visa credit card into a credit card swiper.

By Elaine Glusac

Elaine Glusac is the Frugal Traveler columnist, focusing on budget-friendly tips and journeys.

On Tuesday, the largest credit card companies in the United States reached an agreement with merchants to reduce the so-called swipe fees retailers pay for accepting credit card payments, potentially saving the retailers $30 billion.

These fees also help fund the credit card rewards programs that many travelers redeem for things like free flights and hotel stays, leading points hawks to wonder: Are loyalty programs at risk?

Here’s what we know so far about the changes.

What are the terms of the deal?

Last year, credit card payments generated an estimated $72 billion in fees paid by merchants, which are generally passed along to customers in the form of higher prices. For nearly 20 years, merchants have been seeking reductions in the fees they pay Visa and Mastercard for handling transactions where the cards are used.

The proposed settlement , awaiting approval in a federal court, reduces and caps those fees for five years. It would also allow merchants to potentially charge consumers more based on the card they pay with. For example, a person paying with a premium card like the Chase Sapphire Reserve, which costs $550 a year, could be charged more than someone paying with the more basic Chase Sapphire Preferred card, with an annual fee of $95.

Why does it matter?

The majority of the fees collected go back to the banks that issue the credit cards. Those banks have used the funds to push premium credit cards that offer loyalty points, which can be redeemed for free travel and other perks. The cards with the biggest benefits tend to be those that charge higher swipe fees.

While the reduction in the fees collected sounds small — averaging at least .07 percent — they represent an estimated $30 billion over the five-year term of the deal, which banks could try to make up by reducing points perks.

“It’s reasonable to think that,” said Brian Kelly, the founder of the Points Guy , a news site devoted to maximizing credit card points.

While he speculated that banks will be able to “find other ways to make up the difference,” he acknowledged that a points squeeze could emerge.

“Opportunities to earn probably aren’t going to flourish,” he said.

The idea that merchants could charge more to the holders of premium, perks-rich cards, which are expensive, might also deter consumers from using them. Some experts question the viability of the practice given the potential for consumer backlash.

Is the new agreement related to the Credit Card Competition Act?

The legal actions that led to the new credit card agreement date back to 2005. But the newer Credit Card Competition Act , proposed in 2023, aims to introduce more competition in the credit card payment system. By creating a cheaper alternative pipeline for processing payments, the proposed legislation is seen as a greater threat to rewards programs.

Responding to the just-announced agreement between the credit card companies and retailers, Senator Dick Durbin, Democrat of Illinois, and the lead sponsor of the Credit Card Competition Act, released a statement urging the act’s passage.

“I fear that this deal only provides temporary concessions negotiated by a few lawyers behind closed doors,” he said in the statement.

Other experts said the agreement may ease the pressure on Congress to pass the act.

“I think it’s a way for Visa and Mastercard to show that they are making a good-faith effort to help out merchants by lowering the fees they’ve been complaining about for 20 years, and hopefully enough to let senators know they’re doing their part,” said Chris Hassan, the social media and brand manager for Upgraded Points , a website that tracks credit card benefits.

Separately, the proposed merger between Capital One and Discover, which is pending federal approval, could introduce more competition among credit cards and potentially improve rewards for holders of those cards.

What should I do now?

The points and payments systems won’t change until the agreement is approved, which is expected in late 2024 or early 2025, according to a news release from Mastercard.

But the topic should remind travelers of the reality of playing with points: The rules always change. Values tend to fall as redemption levels rise, which companies issuing these currencies are free to adjust at will.

If you have points, spend them, say experts like Sara Rathner, a travel and credit card specialist at the financial website NerdWallet . “They’re not a trophy to dust and admire.”

Concrete truck driver that hit Hays ISD school bus admitted to marijuana, cocaine use and little sleep, reports say

5-year-old boy, ut phd student identified as victims in school bus crash.

BASTROP COUNTY, Texas – The driver of a concrete truck that drifted into oncoming traffic and collided with a Hays ISD school bus last Friday admitted to using marijuana and cocaine and getting very little sleep, according to court records cited by Austin news station KEYE .

The crash killed one pre-kindergarten student on the bus and the driver of another vehicle that was in the lane behind the bus on a highway in western Bastrop County.

KEYE reported that Jerry Hernandez, 42, told a Texas Department of Public Safety trooper that he only slept for three hours the night before the crash and had consumed cocaine the morning of the crash. The station cited a blood draw search warrant which also stated that Hernandez told the trooper he smoked marijuana around 10 p.m. the night before the crash and got up for work around 12:30 a.m., KEYE reported.

Hernandez has not yet been charged with any crime related to the crash.

The bus was bringing pre-K students and 11 adults from Tom Green Elementary School back to the school following a field trip to the Bastrop Zoo.

The news about the concrete truck driver comes as Hays Independent School District released videos from cameras on that school bus .

The video from the front of the bus shows the oncoming concrete truck drifting across the double line in front of the bus at 1:58 p.m.. The bus driver steers to the right to try to avoid hitting the truck, but they collide head-on with the truck about halfway into the lane.

One student on the bus, 5-year-old Ulises Rodriguez Montoya was killed. A motorist in a Dodge Charger that struck the back of the bus was also killed. He was identified as UT student Ryan Wallace, 33, from Bastrop.

On Friday, Superintendent Eric Wright said a total of 51 were injured, including the bus driver. According to the Associated Press , four people in critical condition were airlifted from the crash site and several others were transported by ambulance. All students have since been released from area hospitals. The district said an early childhood education teacher has the most serious injuries and “will take time to recover.”

The district called the bus driver a hero.

“We will be forever indebted to her, and the other adults on the bus, who, though injured, placed the children above themselves and their own well-being. Dr. Wright said today of the bus driver and the other adults that, ‘their actions saved lives,’” the release states.

The bus didn’t have seatbelts because it was a 2011 model, Tim Savoy, a Hays school district spokesperson, told the newspaper. New buses have been fitted with belts since 2017, he said.

Three Marvelous Days in Moscow

Three Marvelous Days in Moscow

April 3, 2017 by Robert Schrader 2 Comments

I’ll never forget the sense of anticipation I felt looking down onto Moscow as my flight from Warsaw descended, the city shrouded in the pitch black of early winter. The Russian capital had long been on my bucket list, and in just a couple of hours I’d be walking across Red Square toward St. Basil’s Cathedral, hopefully with some snow falling, to begin my 3 days in Moscow.

My Moscow itinerary lived up to all of my expectations. Well, except for one—I imagined a city as grand as Moscow would be difficult to comprehend in a short period of time, but that was not the case. Indeed, seeing Moscow in 3 days provided me a nuanced impression of the city, albeit one I want to build upon with future visits.

Where to Stay in Moscow

Moscow has a reputation as one of the most expensive cities in the world, which means it should be one of the most expensive cities in the world for hotels. Thankfully, at least as of early 2022, the Russian ruble is still very weak, which means that prices for even “nice” hotels in Moscow or comparable to or even lower than their counterparts in the rest of Europe.

If you’re looking for a boutique stay in Moscow, I recommend the Stoleshnikov Boutique Hotel ; otherwise, the city is full of hostels and budget hotels that will serve you during your three days in Moscow itinerary.

How to Divide Up Your 3 Days in Moscow

Day 1: moscow 101.

Although Moscow is a sprawling metropolis, many of the city’s key attractions are centralized—namely, around Red Square , located just north of the Moskva River . The obvious sights here include the impressive Kremlin and iconic St. Basil’s Cathedral but extend north, to the Bolshoi Theatre and also southward, to the river itself and the dramatic vistas the bridges over it provide.

hays travel money

To be sure, you should spend most of your first of three days in Moscow in close proximity to Red Square, in spite of how much more geographical ground there is to discover. Punctuate visits to important points of interest by getting an ice cream at the grandiose GUM department store, or treat yourself to a panoramic view of central Moscow by heading up to the roof of Children’s World department store.

Day 2: Beyond Red Square

Your strategy changes on the second of your Moscow 3 days itinerary, when your focus broadens. How this happens, of course, may vary. If it’s art and culture you’re after, for example, you might make a visit to the Russian State Library and the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts . For architecture, you could visit less-celebrated Moscow churches such as the Cathedral of Christ the Savior , make a tour of the so-called “Seven Sisters” (a.k.a. Stalin’s Skyscrapers ) or even ride the Moscow Metro to Moscow City , which is home to some of the tallest skyscrapers in Europe.

hays travel money

Moscow is also home to a great number of green spaces, most notably the massive Gorky Park , but most dramatically VDNKh —located near the base of the Ostankino TV Tower , it features monuments to all the former Soviet republics. Tverskaya Street , a thoroughfare that extends northward from Red Square.

Day 3: Exploring the Golden Ring

Moscow is large and full enough of things to do that you could remain in the city center for the entirety of your third of Moscow 3 days, but I recommend traveling instead out into the so-called “ Golden Ring ” of historical cities around it. Well-known cities include Suzdal , Vladimir and Kostroma , and are all defined by colorful and well-maintained kremlins, which feature dramatic and picturesque churches and other structures that will be highlights of your Moscow 3 day itinerary.

hays travel money

If you’re traveling independently and using public transport, the easiest Golden Ring city to see as part of your 3 days in Moscow itinerary is Sergiyev Posad , which is accessible via direct suburban commuter train from Yaroslavskaya Railway Station —the journey time is about one hour. Sergivey Posad’s Kremlin is not only picturesque (my Russian friend commentated that one church within it, Mikheevskaya Tserkov , is “Russia’s Sistine Chapel”) but is a great place to enjoy a traditional, filling and warming Russian lunch, specifically at the dumpling house Varenichnaya . Both sweet vareniki filled with sour cherries, or hearty potato and chicken pelmeni will fuel you as you explore Moscow in three days.

Is 3 Days Enough in Moscow?

I can’t lie: This Moscow itinerary is packed full, even by my standards. You’ll have to wake up early every morning and sleep late every night in order to fit it all in, to say nothing of how much more difficult it will be if you travel to Russia in winter like I did (more on that in just a few paragraphs).

Of course, whether you pare down my recommendations to a more appropriate curation of Moscow in 3 days or can devote 5 days or even a week to Moscow from the outset, one thing is for certain: Moscow is far more beautiful and dynamic than the Soviet reputation that precedes it would suggest.

Other FAQ About Travel to Moscow

How much money do i need per day in moscow.

Depending on the exchange rate, you can expect to spend anywhere between 75-200 USD per person, per day in Moscow. How much you spend also depends whether you’re traveling individually or as part of a couple or group, how many meals per day you enjoy in restaurants (versus on the street/in shops) and the relative luxury or simplicity of the Moscow hotel you choose.

Do they speak English in Moscow?

The good news? You can get by only speaking English in Moscow, particularly in the immediate and heavily-touristic center of the city. The trick? While English-language signage is increasingly common, and while you may not need to speak Russian, being able to read the Cyrillic alphabet will make your time in Moscow (and in Russia more broadly) a great deal smoother.

When is the best time to visit Moscow?

Traveling to Russia during colder months not only forces you to move slower (and look less stylish—well, for most of us) as you explore what to see in Moscow in 3 days, but the lack of daylight can make it difficult to squeeze everything into a particular day, and even to stay awake. The good news? Summer, while not necessarily as iconic as winter, is an absolutely gorgeous time to visit Moscow.

The Bottom Line

Is a Moscow itinerary 3 days in length enough? Although Moscow is a huge, sprawling city, you don’t need a huge amount of time to get to know it. Spend day one exploring Red Square and surrounds, day two exploring Moscow’s secondary attractions and day three taking a day trip into the so-called “Golden Ring.” You’ll get a colorful impressive of Moscow—and, more importantly, a nice introduction for your trip to Russia , since it will likely start here.

HCSO deputies cleared in fatal Jan. 5 shooting

by: Julianna Russ

Updated: Apr 7, 2024 / 11:38 AM CDT

HAYS COUNTY, Texas (KXAN) — Following a review, a Hays County grand jury concluded the Hays County Sheriff’s deputies involved in a Jan. 5 shooting incident were justified under Texas law.

According to the county, the Texas Rangers investigated the shooting with the assistance of detectives from the Hays County Sheriff’s Office.

“The Hays County Criminal District Attorney’s Office presented the results of the investigation to the Grand Jury. After hearing the evidence, the Grand Jury determined that the conduct of the officers was justified under the law and voted not to indict,” Higgins said. “This matter is now closed.”

On Jan. 5, HCSO deputies responded to reports of a man, later identified as 35-year-old Kenny Lee Estrada , armed with two knives trying to break into a house on Hunter Creek Cove.

At the scene, deputies found Estrada armed with two knives and gave him several commands to drop them. HCSO said he did not comply and continued to approach the deputies, so he was shot.

Two deputies were involved in the shooting, and Estrada died at the scene. No officers were injured during the incident, according to HCSO.

Taking your kid out of school for the solar eclipse? Absences won't be excused, AISD says

hays travel money

The Austin Independent School District announced Friday that absences will not be excused on Monday, April 8, in anticipation of the solar eclipse .

"We believe this event offers a unique learning opportunity for our students, and we're committed to providing a safe and engaging environment for everyone," the press release said.

More: Central Texas school districts plan solar eclipse viewing activities for students Monday

Here's what else we know:

Will AISD school bus pick-up and drop-off times be delayed?

All school bus routes will operate on a normal schedule, but delays are expected in the afternoon due to higher traffic volumes, according to the press release.

To help families navigate potential delays, the district encourages using the Where’s the Bus app to monitor bus arrival times.

Can I view the solar eclipse at my kid's school?

No. Campus grounds, including fields, will be closed to the general public during school hours.

Districts also created opt-out policies for parents who don’t want their children to view the eclipse outside. Districts have alternative inside plans for those students.

Carlisle Area Little League honors Jamie Hays with field dedication

CARLISLE, Pa. (WHTM) — Little league baseball is underway across the Midstate, and Carlisle Area Little League opening ceremonies featured a special moment for one Carlisle family and everyone in that little league community.

Former Carlisle Area Little League president Jamie Hays passed away in March of 2023, and the league honored Hays during Saturday’s opening ceremonies by naming the Crestview Elementary field after him. Hays family was in attendance to witness the surprise dedication, as his grandsons threw out the ceremonial first pitch.

“I kind of felt weak in my legs,” Gina Hays, Jamie’s wife said. “He’s been honored by so many people and it’s just amazing what people do, and to have the whole family there, it was perfect.”

“Words can hardly describe the feeling,” Wendy Sheaffer, Jamie’s mother, said. “In fact, I didn’t know there was a field being named after Jamie and I’m just so proud of the community and of him and I know he’s here with us today and he’s looking down and he’s smiling.”

“He’s so proud, and he deserves it, he loved this,” Hays said.

Jamie Hays’ impact on Carlisle Area Little League was already felt. Former players showed up in droves in their jerseys to support the family during his services. Now his impact can be seen right on the field.

“He did it for the kids,” Hays said. “It was all about the kids and he would do whatever he had to. He always seemed to have one child that needed special attention and he gave it and he just loved it.”

“I think his motto was ‘everybody plays’ and that meant exactly that,” Wendy Sheaffer said. “Everybody plays. He gave everyone equal time, he was a great mentor, just can’t say enough.”

Ahead of eclipse, Hill Country towns busy, but not overwhelmed

FREDERICKSBURG — Carolyn Hunt adjusted the angle of her Sunspotter, ensuring the lenses and mirrors were aligned correctly.

A projection of the sun appeared on a white piece of paper, and Hunt pointed out a dark patch, telling her daughter, Ember, that it was a sunspot. The toddler pressed her fingers against the paper, seeming to understand at least some of Hunt’s scientific explanation.

The family’s campsite at Lady Bird Johnson Municipal Park, which they’d nicknamed “Camp Cosmic Convergence,” was stocked with supplies for Monday’s total solar eclipse: a telescope, binoculars, solar filters and a slotted spoon and white sheet to capture projections of the sun.

READ MORE: What time is the eclipse hitting your town?

The park was full of tents and RVs, filled with eclipse-seekers who came in search of more than four minutes of totality Monday afternoon, when the moon will obscure the sun and turn daylight into darkness.

On Sunday morning, Hunt was still debating where, exactly, their group of six from West Texas would be watching the spectacle. With clouds in the forecast for much of Central Texas, she was considering whether it would be worth a two-hour drive Monday morning to an area that seemed drier, with a chance for better visibility.

Forecasters are predicting mostly cloudy skies throughout the Hill Country and into San Antonio on Monday, making for poor viewing conditions for the  eclipse. Forecasting models show between 70% and 90% cloud cover throughout South Texas. There is some possibility of clearing skies in some areas, forecasters say.

The weather concerns might mean fewer visitors than had been expected in Hill Country communities such as Fredericksburg, where officials have been preparing for years for the event, expecting tens of thousands, if not more. There were steady flows of people in Fredericksburg and Kerrville on Sunday, but the cities showed no signs of being overwhelmed by an influx yet.

Locals in both towns said it was busier than a typical Sunday, but not extraordinarily so, comparing the crowds to normal busy days during their peak seasons.

Jarrid Dietert, who stood on Fredericksburg’s Main Street overseeing his daughters' bake sale, said the crowds were typical for a peak Saturday, or similar to the city’s Oktoberfest. That event usually draws about 40,000 people; some projections called for the city seeing closer to 100,000 for the eclipse.

About 25 miles away in Kerrville, NASA staffers were setting up camp Sunday at Louise Hays Park, where the space agency plans to livestream the eclipse and a panel of experts throughout the day. A handful of food trucks were parked on the edge of the empty park as city and NASA employees buzzed back and forth.

Prepared for eclipse

Some local businesses and residents were looking to cash in on visitors, advertising parking spaces for sale — for as much as $125 in at least one case — while others had cordoned off their property to keep people away. Near the Gillespie County Airport, one man was putting up "no trespassing" signs on a vacant lot, and in some areas, signs lined roads warning people not to park.

Darla Strawther, who lives east of Fredericksburg in Stonewall, said some property owners in the area are worried that visitors from outside Texas will drive onto their land, not realizing it’s private property.

“They don’t know you just can’t do that in Texas,” she said.

Strawther said she’s noticed an increase in police presence in the days leading up to the eclipse. Between Blanco and Stonewall, “I saw three cop cars on the side of the road looking for speeders,” she said. “And they’re all up and down (U.S.) 290.”

Inside local businesses, the eclipse was almost all anyone could talk about. Coffee shop customers chatted with baristas about their drives and their expectations for Monday, while families in the aisles of H-E-B debated what food they’d be making and how many disposable plates to buy.

Fears of supply shortages seemed to be unfounded, perhaps a sign that people took warnings seriously and stocked up in advance.

Joe Bachmeier, who with his brother Max operates Fredericksburg property management company Bach Bros, said people seem to have heeded warnings to stock up well ahead of the eclipse.

“I went to H-E-B Tuesday, and they had no produce whatsoever,” Bachmeier said. “But then Max went the next day, and they’d restocked everything. H-E-B seems to be staying on top of things.”

Most Fredericksburg residents he’s spoken to have already bought whatever food and other supplies they’ll need and plan to hunker down at home for the actual event. Following suit, Bachmeier said he and a few friends plan to watch the eclipse from his backyard.

Outside River Hills Mall in Kerrville, Franklin Ostronski was hoping people would be in search of novelties, not necessities. From the back of an SUV, he was selling T-shirts with iron-on eclipse designs.

He borrowed $1,000 from a friend and drove from San Bernardino, Calif., to watch the eclipse in Kerrville.

He was hoping to sell 130 shirts to pay back the loan, and he was sleeping in his car to save money because hotel prices in the city have surged.

“I need to see it before I die,”  Ostronski said. “I’m like a kid when it comes to this.”

Pretty much everyone in the Hill Country — residents and visitors alike — said they are keeping an eye on the skies, hoping the weather will cooperate and the eclipse will be visible from the ground.

Several visitors from New York’s American Museum of Natural History will bring umbrellas when Judi Younger leads them on a tour of Comfort, a community of about 2,000 in northwest Kendall County.

“They said it’ll help ward off the rain,” said Younger, vice president of the Comfort Heritage Foundation. “I guess even scientists can be a little superstitious.”

Uncertainty about the weather has whipsawed Phil Jenkins, who operates an Airbnb property in Comfort.

The property was first booked months ago, but the reservation was canceled soon after the first long-term weather forecasts were released. It was soon rebooked but then canceled a second time as the forecasts remained negative.

As of Sunday morning, the property, which sleeps eight and is going for $800 a night, was still available, according to Jenkins, who usually gets $595 a night for it. “Everybody’s too worried about the clouds," he said.

Daniel Vigil, who was camped at Lady Bird Johnson Municipal Park in Fredericksburg on Sunday, said he would focus on the bright side: beautiful bluebonnets and the chance of a short window of clear skies Monday.

“I’m being rather optimistic," he said.  "All we need is a few minutes."

He drove 900 miles with his wife and dog to watch the eclipse, and he had his telescope set up outside his tent, ready and waiting. They traveled to Wyoming in 2017 for the last total solar eclipse and started planning this trip two years ago.

“A total eclipse really gives you a sense of scale, of yourself in the universe,” he said. “Time just seems to stand still.”
