Day 1: London to New York

We fly from London Heathrow to New York City, one of the USA's most lively cities. We spend two nights here; the perfect introduction to the vibrant culture of the United States.

Day 2: New York

Today we're introduced to the 'Big Apple' on a sightseeing cruise around iconic Manhattan Harbour, spotting landmarks from our unique vantage point on the water including Ellis Island and the torch-wielding icon, the Statue of Liberty herself. Back on land, we take a guided city tour of New York City, seeing world-famous sights including Central Park, the open, leafy space set amongst the city's glittering skyscrapers.

Day 3: Washington DC

Boarding a train south today, we travel to the nation's capital and political powerhouse, Washington D.C. We spend two nights here, immersing ourselves in the country's rich and fascinating political history. This afternoon, we head out on a guided tour that takes in many famous landmarks. We see the White House, the official residence and workplace of the president of the United States. We also visit Capitol Hill - the seat of the U.S. government, and Georgetown, a historic cobblestoned neighbourhood.

Day 4: Washington DC

On Day 4, you're free to explore the city at your own pace.

Day 5: To the Mid-West

Late this afternoon we leave the capital on Amtrak's Capitol Limited service. The service runs daily between Washington D.C. and the exciting city of Chicago, following the historic B&O line through the Potomac Valley. Our overnight journey takes in the vast and beautiful scenery of the United States, as we pass historic Harpers Ferry and the Allegheny Mountains on the way to Pittsburgh. We cross into Ohio and head north to Cleveland across Indiana as the train continues through the night.

Day 6: Chicago

We arrive in Chicago after breakfast. Known as the 'Windy City', Chicago is the capital of the state of Illinois and is set on the sea-like shores of the vast Lake Michigan. We take a city tour here that revisits the 'dry and lawless years' of the 1920s and 30s. We take in the site of the St Valentine's Day Massacre as well as Al Capone's headquarters and some of the city's famous landmarks and architecture, including Willis Tower and Millenium Park.

Day 7: Chicago

You're free to explore Chicago in your own time today. The city boasts a stunning skyline along with many highly-rated museums, restaurants and cafés. You could climb the 110-storey Willis Tower, which, upon its completion in 1974, was the world's tallest building. On a clear day, from the observation deck, it's possible to enjoy views over four states - Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin and Indiana.

Day 8: The Great Plains

After a free morning on Day 8, we board the California Zephyr for an overnight journey to Grand Junction, that takes us across the cornfields and plains of Iowa and Nebraska. The Zephyr has a Sightseer Lounge where you can relax and enjoy the views speeding past the window.

Day 9: Grand Junction

After a night spent winding past dramatic peaks and deep ravines, we arrive in Grand Junction, in the heart of Colorado's wine region. We spend the night here, and the rest of the day is free for you to get acquainted with the town. Explore downtown Main Street, where the atmosphere is distinctly 'small-town America', with pleasant cafés and restaurants, and characterful gift shops.

Day 10: Heritage American Rail

On Day 10, we make our way to Silverton for a journey on the Durango & Silverton Railroad. This is a wonderfully nostalgic rail journey that seemingly takes us back in time to the bygone 'Wild West' era famous from Hollywood movies. We travel through breathtaking canyons, past emerald-green rivers, and across the remote wilderness of the National Forest, finally arriving in Durango, where we spend the night.

Day 11: Monument Valley and Flagstaff

After breakfast, we depart Durango. Familiar from a hundred westerns, the rugged landscape of Utah's Monument Valley is one of America's defining images, and we discover it today as we pass through en-route to Flagstaff.

Day 12: Grand Canyon

On Day 12, we head along the legendary Route 66 to the town of Williams, where we join the Grand Canyon Railway. We travel in carriages hauled by historic locomotives on our way to one of the world's most awe-inspiring sights, the Grand Canyon. The canyon, created by the Colorado River over a period of 6 million years, is 277 miles long, up to 18 miles wide, and a mile deep. We arrive at the South Rim and the main viewpoint of the Canyon, where the views across the natural wonder are breathtaking.

Day 13: Las Vegas

Travelling along iconic Route 66 today, we make our way to Las Vegas, a city synonymous with indulgence, glitz and glamour and famed for its neon lights, famous casinos and lively shows. With an afternoon free in 'Sin City', it's the perfect time to enjoy a spot of shopping at one of the great shops on The Strip, or perhaps sit down to a delicious meal at one of the many world-class celebrity restaurants. We spend tonight in the city.

Day 14: Los Angeles

On Day 14, we continue across the desert to Los Angeles, another of the USA's most famous destinations. As the home of America's movie industry, the city is home to many of the worlds most rich and famous, something reflected in its sophisticated modern homes, chic restaurants, and exclusive boutiques. Our guided tour this afternoon introduces us to some of the most well-known spots in the city, including Hollywood Boulevard, where golden stars set into the pavement honour Hollywood's most famous names on the iconic Walk of Fame. We check into our hotel where you could enjoy a relaxed evening, or if you'd prefer, you could head out into LA to explore further.

Day 15: San Francisco

Leaving the bright lights of Los Angeles, we head to San Francisco on the Coast Starlight service, checking into our hotel for two nights upon arrival. San Francisco is a city rich in culture, where streets are lined with colourful Victorian buildings that lead down towards the attractive harbour.

Day 16: San Francisco

On Day 16, we begin the day with a transfer to Pier 39, a popular shopping district filled with arcades and restaurants. Here, we meet our tour guide who introduces us to the impressive sights of the city. We see the world-famous Golden Gate Bridge and Fisherman's Wharf, an area famous for its sea lions, on our sightseeing tour. Later, we board a ship for a memorable sunset cruise, taking in the sights of the city as darkness begins to fall - the perfect way to bid farewell to San Francisco.

Day 17: San Francisco to London

We transfer to the airport today, for our flight back to London Heathrow.

Day 18: Arrive London

You arrive back in London this morning.

USA Coast to Coast: the timeless myth of Route 66

A legendary journey, narrated in dozens of books and films, crossing different climates, landscapes and cultures. The US tour on the road is a dream for many: here's how to make it happen.

Monument Valley Road in the US

United States on the road : the Coast to Coast USA trip is probably the experience of a lifetime and the dream of many. A trip through heterogeneous landscapes, by car, van and even by train, which is also a journey into the American culture, literature and cinema.

Those you'll cross are in fact the routes celebrated by movies such as Easy Rider or sung by the great authors of the beat generation (it's impossible not to mention On the Road by Jack Kerouac). These were also the routes of the pioneers and the gold diggers, who left the famous ghost towns abandoned in the desert with the old saloons in ruins.

The routes you can take on a road trip across the USA are many:

  • Route 66 : it's the most famous and iconic, the symbol of the American essence. The so called Mother Road, which used to connect Chicago and Santa Monica, Los Angeles, doesn't exist any longer. The mother of all the American roads, broken up into several state and interstate highways today, once crossed many states including Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and California covering a total distance of 3,755 km. Route 66 was officially dismissed in 1985, but it can be retraced today, with an organized or fly and drive trip, visiting famous cities such as Los Angeles and Las Vegas or exploring the Grand Canyon.
  • The park** trai**l: it's the itinerary of those crossing the great American parks, usually from Los Angeles to New York (or vice versa). It allows to cross the Death Valley, Bryce Canyon and Grand Canyon, also stopping in Las Vegas, then continuing to Monument Valley and Yellowstone National Park, reaching the Big Apple, for a total duration of 15-20 days.
  • National Old Trail : also called Ocean-to-Ocean Highway, it stretched from Baltimora to Los Angeles in California, but some older maps make it start in New York. Part of the routes covers Route 66 and allows stops in the many ghost towns in Ohio and Kansas.
  • Old Trail to the Beach : the pioneers' route, crossing the great American plains heading south, from Seattle to Miami, passing through Portland, Hell's Canyon, Yellowstone Park and Rocky Mountains.
  • Highway 50 : Highway 50 is the Far West road, punctuated by old buildings abandoned by cowboys and pony expresses. It connects West Sacramento in California to Ocean City in Maryland passing through Reno.

You just have to choose the most suitable route for you: here you will find some tips to arrange the trip.

The recommended itinerary: Route 66

Wether you want to travel by car or motorbike (maybe renting a Harley Davidson, feeling the thrills of the movie Easy Rider ), Route 66 is probably the most amusing of all Coast to Coast trips, because it's the one which is most impressed in our imagionation thanks to almost a century of American literature and cinema.

It starts in Chicago and ends in Los Angeles, crossing eights states (Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and California). along the most celebrated route in the world, dismissed today, crossing iconic cities such as Las Vegas. The route of pioneers, of dreamers and cowboys, passing deserts and old gas stations left as they were back in the Fifties.

Before leaving you need to know that if you choose to rent a car or van and travel on your own, it's not always easy to recognize it. You need to look at road signs carefully.

Route 66 has been replaced today by five highways (I-55 from Chicago to St. Louis, I-44 from St.Louis to Oklahoma City, I-40 from Oklahoma City to Barstow, I-15 from Barstow to San Bernardino, I-50 from San Bernardino to Santa Monica, Los Angeles). To follow Route 66 you need to travel along these roads or other secondary roads running parallel to these and if you get lost near the big cities always follow the "Business Loop" sign, which indicates the old Mother Road route.

How many days do you need to cover Route 66? Consider at least 15 days and if you get can even 20, to stop longer in the most significant cities of the route.

Joshua Tree National Park Route 66 in the Usa

Are you ready to leave? Here are the stages of the trip.

How to arrange the trip: the stages

Here is the itinerary you can follow for a trip along Route 66.

Chicago to Saint Louis (2- 3 days)

You can start your tour by landing at Chicago airport, where you can spend a couple of days to explore this metropolis offering museums, restaurants and an amazing skyline. Then take I-55 and travel along the Old Route 66, crossing Illinois. Pass through Joliet and Launching Pad Giant. Do not miss a stop at RT 66 Museum in Pontiac. Once you pass Springfield, continue to St. Louis, crossing corn fields and the historic Chain of Rock bridge. St. Louis is a quanit city on the banks of Mississippi river, deserving a stop.

Arch of St. Louis in the Usa

St. Louis - Oklahoma City (2 days)

Leave St. Louis behind taking the I-44 to Oklahoma City. Crossing Missouri you will pass hills and the winding roads of Devil's Elbow You can stop for the night in Joplin, a small town hit by a tornado in 2011. The following day set off again towards the landscapes of Oklahoma, the lands of the native Americans. In the evening arrive in Oklahoma City, which fully represents the spirit of Route 66.

Oklahoma City - Santa Fe (3 days)

Once you've left Oklahoma City behind, travel along the Chisholm Trail and stop, time permitting, at Route 66 Museum in Clinton. Further ahead you enter Texas, crossing the Texas Panhandòe. Leaving Teaxas, you enter New Mexico, passing the ghost town of El Rio on the border. Here you will cross an arid landscape full of cactuses, the territory of the Comanches. You can stop for a couple of nights in Santa Fe, one of the oldest and most beautiful cities in America, where you can still breathe in the cowboy tradition.

Santa Fe in the US

Santa Fe - Grand Canyon (2 -3 days)

Spend the next two days travelling towards Grand Canyon, overnighting in Gallup. Leaving Santa Fe you can head towards Albuquerque, entering the Navajos' land. The following day sett off towards Arizona, admiring unforgettable views from the car window. Once you have crossed the border, you will come across the Petrified Forest National Park, an ancient forest of petrified trees. You can spend the night in the towns of Winslow, Flagtsaff and Williams.

Grand Canyon - Las Vegas (2-3 days)

The next day is to be dedicated to the visit of the Grand Canyon, one of the most spectacular parks of the United States, to be soared by helicopter. Once you have visited the Grand Canyon, the following destination can be Las Vegas, Nevada, where you can stop for the night and walk around the hotels and casinos seen in hundreds of movies and TV series.

Las Vegas by night, Usa

Las Vegas - Los Angeles (2-4 days)

Youleaveagain for California this time, headingtowards the finaldestinationofRoute 66, Los Angeles. The road to California crossesspectacularlandscapes in Mojavedesert. Spend the night in Victorville, Barstow or San Bernardino. Beforereaching the City ofAngelsyouwillpass the mountainsof Los Angeles NationalForest, oneof the mostbeautifulsceneriesof the entire trip. Finallyarrive in Los Angelse, whereyou can stop for a fewdays to visit the manyattractionsithas to offer.

A driving tour across the US: how to arrange the trip

The United States are probably the best country to be explored by car. The options to live this adventure are many, surely the most common and popular means of transport is the (rental) car, which allows you to spend your holiday in total freedom. Trusting local operators enables you to rent a car with insurance including a base fee and optional additional policies as well as having accommodations booked.

In order to rent a car in the USA you need yo have an international driving license, passport and credit card to pick up the car. Normally a deposit is also requested. The car is not the only possible option though. Route 66 can also be easily covered by motor bike. Some local operators also take car of baggage shipping to the accommodations along the route. As an alternative, you can rent a van, to live the Coast to Coast tour with a hippy spirit.

Top tips for a USA coast to coast road trip

Updated On 28th March, 2022

Whether you’re gone for 2 weeks or embarking on a 6-month road trip in the USA, driving across America is an unbelievable experience. From the USA national parks to the bustling cities, you can customize your trip to fit your personal adventure. If you’re wondering how to plan your USA coast to coast road trip, or looking for USA road trip top tips, this is the post for you.

You’ve heard aout it in books and drips… a road trip across the USA is a dream for many. On this USA road trip not only will you cross state borders, but you’ll experience different cultures, climates and landscapes too. It’s not all about ticking the experience off your bucket list, though… planning a USA road trip from coast to coast requires a lot of work!

For me it was a dream to drive from the East Coast to California, so when the opportunity presented itself, I packed my bags and hit the road! Starting September 1st, the car was packed, I had my camping clothes and for the next 3-months I would be living in my truck, taking in the vastness and wonder of America. Departing from the sleepy beach town of Cape Cod, MA, I embarked on my journey to California. This USA coast to coast trip entailed a lot of driving, coffee, adventure and discovery.

I’m going to use my experience to share my top tips for a USA coast to coast road trip, and help you plan your USA coast to coast road trip, so you’re more than ready to hit the road and enjoy the view!

How to plan your USA coast to coast road trip: top tips

USA coast to coast road trip: 10 top tips and things you need to know...

1. decide your route and where to start..

The first and most important part of your USA road trip is deciding your route. If you’re currently living in America, plan on starting from your hometown. If you’re living in a different country, plan on flying to a city with a big international hub. New York, Boston or Philadelphia are great places to start your trip on the East Coast, while Los Angeles, Seattle, Portland or Denver are great options for the West Coast.

2. Plan how long and when your USA coast to coast road trip will be.

How long you depend on being on the road determines how many places you will visit on your USA coast to coast road trip. I would always suggest staying at a location for 3-5 days, so you have time to relax and discover. It took me about 6 weeks to get from Massachusetts to California and I had 9 stops between locations. If you’re flexible with time, stop as much as you can. If you’re in a time crunch think about must-see destinations and plan accordingly.

If you’re wondering when the best time for a USA coast to coast road trip is, favourites are spring and fall. These times of year aren’t as hot, and are low season, so you tend to get better prices and fewer crowds.

How to plan your USA coast to coast road trip: top tips

3. Plan your stops and driving time.

One of my biggest top tips for a USA coast to coast road trip is knowing your comfort level of driving. I was traveling with 2 other people, and we all decided the longest we wanted to be in the car was 8 hours. So, when we planned our stops we calculated the distance we were willing to travel and how close we were to our desired location. Between switching drivers, resting and eating along the way, knowing your limits is very important. But let’s get to the fun part, planning your dream USA coast to coast road trip!

Make sure you also consider where you’re going to stop for petrol/gas on your road trip too, so that you don’t get stuck!

usa tour coast to coast

4. Make sure you don't miss out on the best cities in the USA.

One of my favorite things to do while planning my trips is deciding on the activities and places to visit.

On my USA coast to coast road trip, apart from seeing the classic cities like San Francisco and Las Vegas, I was surprised by how much I truly loved Denver and exploring the small towns like Jackson Hole, WY. While the big city life is fun, when you visit a small town, you get a sense of old time American life. You get the feeling of that town’s history, the people and culture that surrounds you.

Cities and towns to visit on your USA coast to coast road trip:

  • New York City, NY
  • Boston, MA
  • New Orleans, LA
  • St. Augustine, FL
  • Chicago, IL
  • Jackson Hole, WY
  • Annapolis, MD
  • Las Vegas, NV
  • Kansas City, MO
  • Portland, OR
  • San Diego, CA
  • Santa Barbra, CA
  • San Francisco, CA

5. Make sure you visit some USA National Parks!

However, in my eyes, a USA coast to coast road trip isn’t complete unless you go to some of the USA National Parks . After living here for a few years, I personally believe this is the most important and beautiful part of seeing America. I spent about 2 weeks in Utah, and it has become my favorite state. Arches and Zion National Parks are breathtaking, and the scenery is captivating. With numerous hikes, bikes and adventure to be had you have options to see so much and experience new and momentaneous milestones.

The best USA National Parks to explore on your USA coast to coast road trip:

  • Canyonlands, Ut
  • Zion, Ut ( see our itinerary for Zion National Park here )
  • Brice Canyon, Ut
  • Grand Canyon, AZ
  • Yosemite, CA
  • Joshua Tree, CA
  • Sequoia, CA
  • Red Wood, CA
  • Grand Teton, WY
  • Yellowstone, WY, MT, ID
  • Rocky Mountain, CO
  • Glacier, MT

See our bucket list of 15 USA National Parks you must visit here.

6. Do your research for each destination.

Whether it’s activities, restaurants, must-see attractions or something else, doing the research before you embark on your USA coast to coast road trip is going to save you a lot of time and mental energy when you arrive at your destination! When you arrive, asking locals for any of their recommendations is also a winner too!

Get top tips on planning your next adventure here.

7. Book accommodation in advance and consider the cost/weather when planning your USA road trip.

I was fortunate enough to convert my truck into my home on wheels. If this is possible I highly recommend doing so, but this can be expensive. On average nightly accommodation came to about 40 dollars a night for a camping site. When planning your USA coast to coast road trip, make sure to look at peak and off peak seasons as the price can differ, and double check with weather conditions as many places close down for the winter season.

One of my top tips for a USA coast to coast road trip if you’re looking to save money is to try camping! While camping is a great option, weather and destinations sometimes make this harder than expected. If you choose to camp during your road trip, national parks , state parks, campgrounds and Hit Camp should be booked before arriving. When staying at state or national parks look at government recreation camping sites as they are cheaper. Camping is an affordable fun way to see America and, while it brings you back to basics, it’s adventurous and very affordable.

If you still want to stay in campgrounds and parks but want to elevate your accommodation look into renting a camper van. Outdoorsy and Escape Camper Vans are great options to rent for a road trip and still live the Nomad life on the road. There are some free camping zones, but that is something you need to search for by state.

Not a fan of camping? Do you want to live a little more luxurious during your road trip? As always, hotels can be booked and you can always look into an Air BnB .

If you’re camping (in a tent or a van) remember to leave no trace. Check out top tips for sustainable van life here.

How to plan your USA coast to coast road trip: top tips

8. Before you leave, make sure your vehicle is ready.

One of my top tips for planning your USA is to make sure your vehicle is ready for a road trip! You want to make sure that you’ve checked fluid levels, tyres, brake pads and more. Depending on what needs to be checked and how old your vehicle is, you might want to go to a mechanic or you might be able to do some of the checks yourself.

Make sure that you’ve got all the right vehicle / travel insurance too! And it’s definitely worth learning how to change a tyre yourself (if you don’t know already), so you don’t end up waiting for road side assistance for hours!

See our top tips for essential vehicle checks before a road trip here.

9. Get a paper map.

Depending on your USA coast to coast road trip itinerary, you might hit points where you don’t get good phone signal and you can’t rely on the GPS on your phone. Having a paper map will help!

10. USA coast to coast road trip itineraries...

If all that’s left to plan on your “how to plan a USA coast to coast road trip” checklist is the itinerary, here are some USA road trip itineraries that you should definitely consider!

Interstate 90: Seattle to Boston

Crossing 13 states and 3,085 miles

#ThisIsMyRoute

This coast-to-coast route road trip will take you on an unforgettable vacation across the United States, exploring many national parks and fantastic cities along the way. You will begin by flying into Boston. After enjoying all of the history and culture that the city has to offer, you will start your long drive west. Your next stop: the wonders of Niagara Falls and the charms of neighboring Buffalo. From there, you will stop in the fantastic city of Pittsburgh and explore all of its great cultural attractions. After your time in that city, you’ll head to another: the fascinating and re-emerging Detroit. From the so-called Motor City, you’ll roll into Chicago, the so-called Windy City. The next leg of driving will take you to the last major city for the next several days, the cosmopolitan Minneapolis. A trip to lovely Sioux Falls is next and from there you will head directly west into the incredible Badlands National Park at the other end of South Dakota. No trip to the state is complete without seeing famous Mt. Rushmore, so you will visit the site before you travel through the scenic Black Hills and cross into Wyoming. There, you will first enjoy the otherworldly Devils Tower and drive to the stunning Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks. You will then head down into Utah to enjoy both the massive Great Salt Lake and the many cultural activities of adjacent Salt Lake City. Your next leg will lead you up into Idaho to check out Craters of the Moon, an amazing geological wonderland. After that, you will go up into eastern Oregon to explore both Hells Canyon and the surrounding environs. On your final stretch, you will drive northwest, passing the towering Mt Rainier until you eventually roll into Seattle.

Preparation

We recommend at least two-and-a-half weeks to encompass all of the possible offerings that are suggested in this itinerary. The national parks in this trip are all worth spending at least a couple of days in, perhaps more. The major cities, too, are all worthy of some of your time. Many of the drives are several hours long – with some very long stretches between towns – so plan your travels accordingly. The weather on this trip is hugely variable, depending on the season and location. The late spring is ideal in terms of temperature, though there could be remnants of snow in Wyoming. In the summer, it will be quite hot everywhere, muggy in some places and very dry in others. In the autumn, it will be much more pleasant, though there is again potential for snow in the more mountainous regions. In the fall it will certainly rain quite a lot in Seattle. Follow the forecasts before traveling.

ARRIVAL IN BOSTON

usa tour coast to coast

Fly into Logan International Airport and pick up your rental car. Driving around the city can be difficult for visitors, so one smart option would be to park at a garage in the North End and take “the T” (subway) around the city. The historic neighborhoods around Beacon Hill and downtown are perfectly suited for walking and taking in the buildings, streets and parks that were integral to the founding of the United States.

Best historic walk:

The freedom trail, can’t miss it:, watch the sox play at fenway park, best place to view some art:, isabella stewart gardner museum, best haunted place to stay:, the omni house hotel, must see district:, harvard square, best place for dinner:, beacon hill district, charles street, niagara falls state park.

The following morning, hit the road for a long drive that crosses the full width of both Massachusetts and upstate New York. Your next destination is the iconic Niagara Falls, which will be well worth the trip. A good midway stopping point could be Syracuse, the economic hub for this part of the state and home to a major research university. Get a drink at Recess Coffee and hit the road again. If you time it right, arriving at Niagara Falls State Park just before dusk could be perfect for taking in the majesty of one of the most powerful waterfalls in the world. There are hiking trails around the gorge to take in the panoramic views. Spend the night in nearby Buffalo, the second most populous city in the state after New York City.

Best local architecture:

Louis sullivan guaranty building, buffalo’s culinary claim to fame:, buffalo wings at the anchor bar, best place to buy a book:, west side stories, the left bank, elmwood village, pittsburgh and the city of bridges.

usa tour coast to coast

The drive down to Pittsburgh follows the eastern tip of Lake Erie, with numerous spots to turn off the highway and check out this immense body of water, the fourth largest of the Great Lakes. Your destination for the day is Pittsburgh, the so-called “Steel City” for its long history in steel manufacturing. (It is also considered the “City of Bridges,” for its 446 river-spanning bridges.) At the convergence of the Allegheny, Monongahela and Ohio Rivers, this lovely city is home to a huge diversity of cultural activity from sports to arts, shopping to dining. There are a number of esteemed museums, like the Carnegie Museum of Natural History and the Andy Warhol Museum, and many neighborhoods perfect for shopping or strolling around in, like the Strip District or Lawrenceville. If it’s baseball season, getting tickets for a Pirates game at historic PNC Park would be a fun outing, too.

Best two-wheeled museum

Bicycle heaven, best gardens:, the phipps conservatory, best river view:, duquesne incline, for the birds:, national aviary, butcher and the rye, hippest neighborhood:, detroit rock city.

usa tour coast to coast

Detroit occupies an interesting place in contemporary America. During the height of the booming automotive industry based in the city, Detroit was once one of the largest urban areas in the entire country. Then, after numerous plant closures, the city suffered an enormous population loss, with up to a quarter of the city moving elsewhere. Today, though, the city is on a tremendous upswing as young people, artists and entrepreneurs have been moving to Detroit to take advantage of cheap property and endless opportunities to start businesses. There is now a thriving arts scene, interesting shopping and inventive restaurants, alongside many historical pieces of architecture from the city’s earlier era.

Best museum:

Detroit art institute, motown museum, best art deco:, the guardian building, get outside:, belle isle park, best place to shop local:, the eastern market, best place for food and fun:, anywhere in greektown, to chicago and the windy city.

usa tour coast to coast

Chicago is a world-class city, though one that is somewhat peripheral due to its location away from the coasts. This perhaps makes the city even better, though, as Chicago has retained much of its local culture and history over the centuries. There is enough to do in Chicago that one could easily spend a week sightseeing there, but if you only are dedicating a couple days to the city, you can easily concentrate your time on the key attractions. As the city is fairly spread out, you could pick a neighborhood to concentrate on – like the famous Loop, or the less traveled Pilsen, Ukrainian Village, Logan Square and Wicker Park – or ping pong around the city by public transit to see Cloud Gate and Millennium Park, the Magnificent Mile, the Field Museum, Garfield Park Conservatory and other deservedly known places. There is a lot to explore in Chicago and anywhere you go will be worthwhile.

Best place to get some culture:

The art institute of chicago, best american experience:, watch the cubs play at wrigley field, best place for a stroll:, lakefront trail, best place to catch the blues:, the house of blues, best chicago style deep dish pizza:, gino’s east, best neighborhood:, streeterville, minneapolis and the land of ten thousand lakes.

usa tour coast to coast

The largest city in the state of Minnesota, Minneapolis has in recent years been recognized as one of the country’s most desirable cities to move to, due to its affordable housing, efficient public transportation, exciting arts scene and access to great outdoors activities. As for the latter, the city is on the Mississippi River and near to the Minnesota River, as well as the numerous lakes and wetlands that dot the state, so it’s prime for canoeing and kayaking in the summer. Spend a day or two in the city to really take it all in and see what people have been raving about.

THE MALL OF AMERICA

Minnehaha falls park, best outdoor art:, minneapolis sculpture garden, mid town global market, spoon and stable, best night out:, northeast river district, west over the plains.

Your gateway to some of the most stunning national parks in the country will be Sioux Falls, the largest city in the state of South Dakota. The small city is considered one of the epicenters in the Great Plains and has a fair amount to do for a day or so. It would be an ideal location to stroll around and relax – and maybe do some necessary shopping for supplies – before you spend long stretches of time in the relative wilderness.

OLD COURTHOUSE

Uss south dakota battleship memorial, stretch your legs:, sioux falls sculpture walk, carnaval brazilian grill, best place for a brew:, the stunning badlands national park.

usa tour coast to coast

One of the most underappreciated of the national parks awaits you at the beautiful Badlands National Park, a landscape of sharp buttes, gnarled rock pinnacles and twisted spires in the middle of the largest mixed grass prairie in the United States. The geology around the park is truly otherworldly and very much worth exploring. There are plentiful hiking opportunities, but getting a lay of the land by car may be the most efficient way to see the park. There are also many sites related to the surrounding Native American culture and the history of homesteading in the region.

Best scenic drive:

Badlands loop road, the badlands wall, best place to stretch your legs:, notch trail, best overlook:, big badlands overlook, best way to see an american wildlife icon:, robert’s prairie dog town, cedar pass lodge, the black hills.

Your next leg of driving will first take you to the requisite Mt. Rushmore, one of the most iconic monuments in the United States. Though there are some trails around the site, it’s best to drive there, stretch your legs, look at the visitor center, take some pictures and get back on the road. More worthwhile is the wide region of the Black Hills, which, like the Badlands, feature unparalleled natural beauty. Shoot for a quick day hike in Black Hills National Forest or Custer State Park to really absorb the environment. Your next stop is just beyond the Wyoming state line, the amazing geological formation at Devils Tower. This looming monument is a sacred site for the Lakota tribe and it is also one of the most popular rock climbing spots in the country. Spend the night in nearby Gillette to rest up for the following day.

SPEARFISH CANYON

Best history:, crazy horse memorial, can’t miss it:, devils tower national monument, best place to get dinner:, pizza corrello, best place to stay:, arbuckle lodge, best place to grab a local drink:, big lost meadery, yellowstone national park.

Wake up early and head west to Cody Wyomingif you have the time then try to hit the Buffalo Bill Museum of the West on your way through. Hop on the Buffalo Bill Scenic Byway that connects Cody to Yellowstone National Park. One of the most beautiful drives in America you will experience the rushing Shoshone River, amazing rock formations and the mountains views. If you want to get out and stretch your legs there are multiple spots along the highway. Once you reach the eastern entrance of Yellowstone National Park don’t forget to grab a park map. In that map you will be able to see anything and everything that may spark your interest during your park journey. Remember, Yellowstone covers a huge area of land. If you want to get the best experience without a lot of driving we suggest staying one night within Yellowstone National Park.

Best place for wildlife:

The lamar valley, storm point nature trail, best place to ride a horse:, lodges of east yellowstone, best point of interest:, lake yellowstone hotel, best iconic american landmark:, old faithful, cant’s miss it:, grand canyon of the yellowstone  and  emerald pool, salt lake city via grand teton national park.

After your stay at  Yellowstone , you will head south with Salt Lake City as your destination. On the way, you will drive through the equally breathtaking Grand Tetons National Park. You could definitely choose to spend a day or two here, as there are many amazing hikes and natural attractions to explore. But if you’re itching to cover more ground, a drive through the park could suffice, as you’ll witness the towering mountains from the comfort of your car as you head south. When you eventually land in Salt Lake City, plan on spending a couple of days there. A truly fascinating place, Salt Lake City is the most populated city in the Intermountain West and famous for being the headquarters for the Mormon Church. Indeed, the combination of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and Temple Square, alongside an active outdoors scene and thriving arts community, make for an interesting local culture. There are plenty of excellent shopping and dining opportunities here, in case you’ve been missing them over the past week or so. Definitely worth exploring is the massive Great Salt Lake, the centerpiece for the state and region. It is the largest saltwater lake in the Western Hemisphere and one of the largest terminal lakes in the world. It’s a spectacular natural feature in a spectacular city.

GRAND TETON AND JACKSON

Best road for photo ops:, signal mountain summit road, colter bay lakeshore, national museum of wildlife art, best place to shop:, downtown jackson, carriage ride through the national elk refuge, best local brew:, snake river brewing, salt lake city, city creek center, best way to see the city:, trolley tours of salt lake, best downtown nightlife:, broadway district, best musuem:, natural history museum of utah, the downtown salt lake city farmer’s market, can’t miss restaurant:, valter’s osteria, best mexican food in utah:, the red iguana, can’t miss outdoor experience:, great salt lake state park  or  big cottonwood canyon, craters of the moon.

After your stay in Salt Lake City, you head Northwest to Pocatello and the Craters Of The Moon. Craters of the Moon formed during eight major eruptive periods between 15,000 and 2000 years ago. Lava erupted from the Great Rift, a series of deep cracks that start near the visitor center and stretch 52 miles to the southeast. During this time the Craters of the Moon lava field grew to cover 618 square miles. Our recommendation would be to head to Pocatello and get settled for the day, gather a picnic together, then head out to Craters of the Moon. The best place to start your adventure is at the Robert Limbert Visitor Center. The center will be able to provide you with maps and information, as well as an exquisite exhibit center and bookstore. After Craters of the Moon, head back to Pocatello and get ready for a great night. There are a number of different things to do in Pocatello, but we would recommend heading right to the heart, Old Town Pocatello. From specialty shops to fine dining, Old Town Pocatello is a magnet for people looking for a unique experience.

Great breakfast:

Elmer’s restaurant, best coffee on the go:, june’s place, wilderness trail, exploring the caves, best place to catch the sunset:, the sunset cone, best place to get some dinner:, sandpiper restaurant, west to oregon.

Your drive to  Oregon  is fairly long – nearly eight hours until your next destination – but it is also unparalleled in its natural beauty, as you traverse through several wilderness areas and national forests. Right on the border between Idaho and Oregon is the Hells Canyon National Recreation Area, one of the more incredible wilderness areas in the state. You can get amazing bird’s-eye views of the region’s mountain valleys from the Hells Canyon Overlook, so make sure you at least stop there. If you want a more extended time to stretch your legs, there are numerous trails for hiking in the area. Plan on spending the night in Joseph, a quaint town in the northeastern corner of Oregon. Joseph was once a booming lumber town, but the region hit a long lull when many of the mills went out of business in the 1980s. Today, however, it is home to thriving bronze foundries and many ex-pat artists from Portland who are creating a niche in the town. Joseph would make a great base for exploring the natural wonders in this part of Oregon. The Wallowa Mountains, the Zumwalt Prairie and Wallowa Lake are all relatively close and worthy of your time.

 Take a canoe trip:

Wallowa lake state park, best outdoor recreation:, zulmwalt prairie, best place to get a little history:, wallowa nez perce interpretive center, get a bird’s eye view:, wallowa lake tramway, best place to get a steak:, the stubborn mule, best place for coffee and breakfast:, the blythe cricket, mount rainier national park and yakima.

Mount Rainier National Park, which, at 14,410 feet is an iconic feature of the  Washington  landscape. This active volcano is the most glaciated peak in the contiguous United States and spawns six major rivers. Visit the Henry M. Jackson Memorial Visitor Center to get some orientation around the park and decide if you want to spend a full afternoon here or even longer. (As with all of the national parks, you could spend a day or a week at Rainier, so it’s largely up to you to figure this out.) Aim to spend the night in Yakima after your time at Rainier. Yakima is a small city famous for its fertile agricultural productivity, specializing in hops (over 70% of the nation’s hops come from the Yakima Valley), apples and wine. As for the latter, there are numerous wineries in town; touring some of them would be a great way to spend an afternoon. As a whole, the town makes an excellent stopping point on your drive east.

CIRCLE MOUNT RAINIER DRIVE

Shadow lakes trail, narada falls, best place to try some yakima wine:, bonair winery, cowiche canyon kitchen and icehouse, hotel maison, .5 hours/72 miles.

Seattle is where your coast to coast route ends, but don’y be too hasty to head to the Airport to fly out. Seattle is a world-class city, and you should take a few days to experience all there is to do here. The city is relatively easy to navigate by car, though it may be best to avoid driving in the late afternoon, as the freeways and roads can be horribly gridlocked around rush hour. (There is a decent bus system, as well.) Like many West Coast cities, Seattle is fairly spread apart, so it’s best to pick a few neighborhoods and explore from there. Downtown has the iconic Pike Place Market, as well as the Seattle Art Museum, the Seattle Aquarium and the first ever Starbucks Coffee, all within easy walking distance. Other great walkable neighborhoods worth checking out include Ballard, Fremont and Capitol Hill.

THE SEATTLE WATERFRONT

Can’t miss it:, pike place market, best architectural wonder:, seattle space needle, best city view:, best place for seafood:, elliot’s oyster house, inn at the market.

what our customers say

My partner and I spent three weeks driving Route 66 before finishing with a slight detour through Yosemite and on to San Francisco. Rather than say it was a mere holiday, I can only describe it as a once in a lifetime experience and we loved every minute of it. We had a great time exploring each new destination, as well as discovering all the hidden gems along each leg of the journey.

Frozen Four: History and team records

Pair of massive great white sharks surface off Florida coast within a minute of each other

A pair of 13-foot-long great white sharks, one named bob, the other named breton, delivered "pings" within a minute of each other off the coast of florida northeast of jacksonville earlier this week..

A pair of massive, 13-foot adult male great white sharks popped up within minutes of each other off the Florida coast earlier this week.

Bob, a  1,300-pound white shark , surfaced Tuesday, March 19, at 12:45 a.m. ET in the waters northeast of Jacksonville; then Breton, a  1,4 00-pound great white shark , was located slightly northeast of Bob at 12:46 a.m. ET Tuesday, according to nonprofit research group OCEARCH , which tracks sharks.

The sharks send off a "ping" when their dorsal fins break the water's surface long enough to transmit a signal from satellite tags OCEARCH attached on them.

The pair's arrival comes ahead of most sharks' impending trip north with the arrival of spring and warmer waters in the Atlantic Ocean. And they popped up just days after a 10-foot long  great white shark named Penny  made an appearance off the west coast of Florida on Sunday, March 17, at 11: 01 a.m. ET.

Rare snake find: Snake with two heads undergoes surgery to remove ovaries. See the 'Two-headed gal'

Since OCEARCH tagged Penny in April 2023 off of Ocracoke, North Carolina, the shark has traveled more than 5,300 miles up the East Coast into Canadian waters in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, then south to Florida in the fall.

Penny has been traveling around the Florida Keys since the first of the year, according to OCEARCH.

These three sharks are among the nearly 400 the non-profit has tagged to track their oceanic travels. As part of its ocean conservation mission, the group also tags seals, dolphins and turtles.

Great white shark Breton makes 'self portrait' with his travels

Breton sent another ping about 11 hours later on Tuesday at 12:05 p.m. ET off the coasts of South Carolina and Georgia. The first shark tagged during OCEARCH's 2020 expedition in Nova Scotia, Breton was 13 feet, 3 inches long and weighed in at a whopping 1,437 pounds.

Breton was named by SeaWorld, an OCEARCH partner, for the people of Cape Breton where it was tagged.

Breton' previous travels , represented by his OCEARCH pings between September 2020 and January 2022, look like the outline of the body of a shark, with the tail in Nova Scotia and head pointed at Florida's east coast.

"You can track Breton, the white shark that made this self-portrait on the OCEARCH Global Shark Tracker," the research group posted on  X , formerly Twitter.

More about Bob, the great white shark

Bob hasn't pinged again, so he and Breton may not be considered traveling "buddies" like Simon and Jekyll, two great whites that traveled 4,000 miles together last year .

Bob measured 13 feet 4 inches and weighed 1,308 pounds when OCEARCH tagged him in Nova Scotia in September of 2021. He was named for OCEARCH chief scientist Dr. Robert (Bob) Hueter, a pioneer in shark science for over 40 years.

"We’ll be following the journeys of both Bob the shark and Dr. Bob Hueter as they continue to help us grow in the world of science for the betterment of our sharks and our oceans," a note on Bob's  OCEARCH tracker page  reads.

Other sharks on the move around Florida, Carolinas include Rose, Anne Bonny

Anne Bonny , a great white measuring 9 feet 2 inches, pinged on Friday at 5:03 a.m. ET in waters off the coast of South Carolina.

Tagged on April 23, 2023 by OCEARCH in the waters near Ocracoke, North Carolina, Anne Bonny spent summer in the waters around Nova Scotia before heading south in November 2023. The shark has been off the Carolinas' coasts since about Thanksgiving.

Another great white shark, this one's name is Rose, popped up on the southwest coast off Florida two weeks ago, according to OCEARCH . The 10-foot, 5-inch shark, tagged in 2020, has traveled from the east coast of the state where it pinged several times last month.

Why are so many great white sharks around Florida?

It's not unusual for a grouping of white sharks around Florida and the Gulf in the winter. During the overwintering period (Dec,1 to May 15) many of the white sharks tracked by OCEARCH spend their time from the Outer Banks of North Carolina down the east coast of Florida and into the Gulf of Mexico, the research group told USA TODAY.

They swim south when the water gets too cold for them and they lack food sources up north,  OCEARCH chief scientist Bob Hueter   previously told the USA TODAY Network . "A lot of these white sharks, most of them actually, tend to kind of come down, they don't really hug the coast in the sense that they're right on the beach, but they stay in the continental shelf waters, most of them and they come south," Hueter told the Fort Myers News-Press , part of the USA TODAY Network, in March 2023."

OCEARCH research has found a pattern of about half of their tagged sharks head to the Gulf of Mexico, he said.

"We don't really know what they're feeding on. There's some reason to believe that they're going for schools of fish, like amberjack, that are found in great numbers in the Gulf this time of year.," Hueter said. "There's not too much in the way of marine mammals out there compared to up north, so the occasional whale that's dead and floating but probably mostly fish."

Major winter storm brings rain and snow from West Coast to Plains

A high-impact winter storm is forecast to bring rain and snow to an area spanning from California through the northern Plains to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.

More than 20 million people are under winter weather alerts Sunday, including in Denver; Minneapolis; Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and Bismarck, North Dakota.

More than 12 inches of snow had already accumulated in Alta, Utah, as of Sunday morning, with the Alta Ski Area reporting 22 inches in 24 hours. In Flagstaff, Arizona, more than 7 inches of snow had fallen and in Bellemont, a town 12 miles north, 10 inches of snow fell.

Heavy snow will continue to develop over the central and northern Plains on Sunday afternoon, with blizzard conditions that will create hazardous travel conditions overnight, affecting parts of Colorado to Minnesota. A dangerous combination of 2 inches per hour of snowfall and 60 mph wind gusts is possible.

“Strong winds and heavy, wet snow on trees and power lines may damage trees and cause power outages,” the National Weather Service said in an update Sunday. “Wind gusts over 50 mph today may result in power outages, blowing dust with reduced visibility, difficult travel and property damage.”

The forecast held true Sunday night as the weather service office for the Twin Cities reported a snowfall rate of 1 to 2 inches an hour. Social media imagery from Waterloo, Iowa, verified by NBC News showed near whiteout conditions before sunset.

The weather service office for Boulder, Colorado, reported a salad bar of precipitation, including "a band of rain/snow/graupel/hail/ice pellets & whatever other hydrometeors you may be seeing." Social media video from southwest Denver, verified by NBC News, appeared to show graupel falling in the late afternoon.

Steady snow showers will persist through Monday, with snow clearing out and into Canada by Tuesday evening.   The area from Nebraska to northern Wisconsin will likely see about 8 to 16 inches of snow, with some areas receiving up to 20 inches.

This same storm system will also spark heavy rain and severe weather concerns across the southern Plains and Southeast through the next two days.

On Sunday, the storm was forecast to target Kansas and Oklahoma, including Wichita and Dodge City. Storms overnight will be capable of producing very large hail, tornadoes and damaging wind gusts.

By Monday, this risk will shift into east Texas and the lower Mississippi Valley, affecting 7 million in Louisiana, including New Orleans, Baton Rouge and Shreveport. Damaging wind gusts will be the primary concern with any storms that form Monday afternoon and evening, with a few tornadoes possible.

Localized flash flooding may also occur across the South including in Missouri, Arkansas, Mississippi and Alabama, where rainfall totals through Tuesday will range from 1 to 3 inches, and locally up to 4 inches.

Over the weekend, a powerful weather system a ffected the tri-state area with heavy rain and strong winds, as a fast-moving storm blanketed northern New England with snow.

Snowfall totals as of Sunday afternoon included 33.1 inches in West Windsor, Vermont, 32 inches in Landgrove, Vermont, and 29 inches in East Millinocket, Maine, according to the National Weather Service .

A storm Saturday dumped 3.06 inches of rain at a gauge in Philadelphia, setting a new daily rainfall record and marking the wettest day recorded in March at the weather service's official observing site.

In Chester, Pennsylvania, south of Philadelphia, efforts to rescue a 6-year-old girl who slipped into a rain-swollen creek Saturday turned into a recovery operation , authorities said on Sunday afternoon. But the U.S. Coast Guard was expected to continue to scan the waters of the nearby Delaware overnight, they said.

More than 151,000 utility customers were without power Sunday night in New York, New Hampshire, and Maine, according to utility tracker PowerOutage.us.

Earlier in the day the figure was more than 350,000 throughout the Northeast.

USA men to open 2024 Olympics against Nikola Jokić’s Serbia; American women tipoff tournament vs. Japan

LAS VEGAS, NEVADA - JULY 16: A USA Basketball logo is shown on center court before an exhibition game between the Australia Opals and the United States at Michelob ULTRA Arena ahead of the Tokyo Olympic Games on July 16, 2021 in Las Vegas, Nevada. (Photo by Ethan Miller/Getty Images)

The United States men’s basketball team will open the Paris Olympics against Serbia, and likely NBA superstar Nikola Jokić , while the U.S. women start the Games against the team they beat three summers ago for the gold.

According to the results of the Olympic men’s and women’s basketball tournament draws on Tuesday, conducted by FIBA at the Patrick Baumann House of Basketball in Mies, Switzerland, near Geneva, the U.S. men will face the Serbians on July 28, South Sudan and a team yet to qualify in their group stage. The American women will open against 2020 silver medalist Japan on July 29, and will also play Belgium and Germany in the first round. The men’s tournament goes from July 27 to Aug. 10; the women’s from July 28 to Aug. 11.

The two American teams are both reigning gold medalists and will play in Group C for the Paris Games group stage. The U.S. women are champions seven consecutive times while the men have captured the last four Olympic golds.

The U.S. women are heavy favorites to repeat, but the same cannot be said for the American men who are expected to send a star-studded roster to France, but will nonetheless face a pool with more NBA talent spread across the other countries’ rosters than ever before.

For instance, the Americans will face Serbia, runner-up at the 2023 FIBA World Cup, with Jokić on the roster.

The South Sudanese are making their first Olympic appearance and should have the possible No. 1 pick of the 2025 NBA draft — Khaman Maluach — on the roster. The U.S. plays South Sudan in a friendly in London on July 20.

The other potential opponents for the U.S. men in the first round are Italy, Bahrain, Ivory Coast, Lithuania, Mexico or Puerto Rico, who are competing against each other in one of four Olympic qualifying tournaments held around the world from July 2-7.

The Lithuanians, with Pelicans center Jonas Valančiūnas , were one of three teams to beat the U.S. during the World Cup last summer. And yet, of the three pools for the men’s group stage, the U.S. probably had the best draw possible. It should be noted that the U.S. finished fourth at the World Cup with a roster of mostly up-and-coming NBA stars, instead of the heavyweights the Americans traditionally send to the Olympics .

In Group A are Canada, third-place winner at the World Cup with a roster stocked with NBA talent, including MVP hopeful Shai Gilgeous Alexander; Australia, another country with an array of NBA players and then potentially Spain and either Greece or Slovenia. All three countries must win qualifying tournaments to reach the Olympics, and Greece (with Giannis Antetokounmpo ) and Slovenia (with Luka Dončić ) are in the same qualifier. Sheesh.

In Group B is tournament host and 2020 silver medalist France, with Victor Wembanyama and 13 other NBA players from the country to pick from; World Cup champion Germany, who should have at least four NBA players, including Franz Wagner and Dennis Schröder ; Japan and the winning team from a Latvia-hosted qualifying tournament.

“Between last September, the most followed FIBA (event) ever, the basketball World Cup, to the Paris 2024 Olympics, these are 12 fantastic months of FIBA basketball,” Andreas Zagklis, secretary general of FIBA, said before Tuesday’s Olympic draw commenced. “We also have great momentum with a generation of superstars being followed by a young generation of new superstars.

“So, of course, basketball at the world level is synonymous with superstars, we know that,” Zagklis continued. “But we also have an ambition to be, and I think we will be, the No. 1 indoor ticketed event in Paris 2024. There are two rules: there are no groups that are easy after this draw, so whoever you see smiling, just say ‘see you in August in Paris.’ And two, buy your tickets as of tomorrow.”

To be clear, the American women have not lost an Olympic game since 1992, nor have they lost any international tournament games since 2006.

One more gold will set the new Olympic record for consecutive titles in basketball; they’re currently tied with the U.S. men from 1936 to 1968.

For reference, the U.S. women “only” beat host Japan by 15 in the gold medal game in Tokyo, and in a romp to another World Cup championship in 2022, their only remote challenges were issued by Belgium and China early in the tournament.

The Chinese, runner-up to the U.S. women at the World Cup, are in Pool A with Serbia, Spain and Puerto Rico. Pool B includes the Australians, Canada, Nigeria and host France, bronze medalists from the Tokyo Games.

The U.S. men will play South Sudan on July 31 and the winner of the qualifying tournament in the group stage finale on Aug. 3. The U.S. women will play Belgium Aug. 1 and finish their group play against Germany on Aug. 4.

Group play for the men’s and women’s tournaments will be held in Lille, France, near the Belgian border , in an outdoor soccer stadium with a retractable roof, while knockout stages and the medal round at Accor Arena in Paris.
