History of Cordoba

Cordoba was the capital of the Roman province ( Provincia Hispania Ulterior Baetica ), the most splendid period, when it had so many buildings dedicated to joyful matters as Rome, to which it gave a lot of philosophers like Lucio Anneo Séneca , orators like Marco Anneo Séneca and poets like Lucano . Afterwards, it occupied an important place in the Spania province of the Byzantine Empire and during the Visigoth period. It managed to regain the status of Capital during the Independent Emirate and the Western Omeya Caliphate. In this period it reached its maximum apogee, having a large population, between 250.000 and 500.000 people, and becoming, in the 10th century, one of the biggest cities in the world, as well as a large cultural, political and economical center. The Mosque of Cordoba, one of the most well known monuments, dates from this period.

Nowadays, it is a big cultural reference for the south of Europe, one of the most beautiful, well kept and with the highest quality lifestyle city of Spain, with one of the most extensive historical places of the world, declared World Heritage Site by the UNESCO on December 17th 1984. The city presents several modern and well communicated areas, which are also references of Cordoba in the 21st century, standing out the Zoco and Plan Renfe districts for their urban dimensions and high quality homes, though the prices of houses have gone sky-high. Cordoba is also candidate for the European Cultural Capital for 2016.

The Junta de Andalucia has been studying for some time, the construction of the Metropolitan Area of Cordoba, which would consist of (apart from the capital), the regions of Villafranca , Obejo , La Carlota , Villaharta , Villaviciosa , Almodóvar del Río and Guadalcázar , counting altogether with an approximate population of 351.000 people. The Law 5/2002, established that any co-habit couples were regulated, with the same rights as married couples, therefore in this Autonomic Community any couple, with independence of their sexual tendency, have the same rights and obligations as the married ones.

History of the Mosque of Cordoba

The Mosque-Cathedral of Cordoba is the most important monument of all the Western Islamic world, and one of the most amazing in the world. The evolution of the “Omeya” style in Spain is resumed in the history of the Mosque of Cordoba, as well as other styles such as the Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque of the Christian architecture.

It seems as if the place that the Mosque-Cathedral of Cordoba occupies nowadays was dedicated, from ancient times, to the cult of different divinities. In this same place, and during the Visigoth occupation, another building was constructed, the “San Vicente” Basilic. On top of this basilic and after paying half of the site, the primitive Mosque was constructed. This basilic, of rectangular shape, was shared for a period of time between Moslems and Christians. After the Muslim enlargement, the Basilic became property of Abderraman I, who destroyed it to construct the first “Mosque Alhama” or main Mosque of the city. Nowadays, some of the constructive elements of the Visigoth building are integrated in the first part of Abderraman I.

The Great Mosque has two different areas: the courtyard or “arcade sahn“, where the “alminar” (minaret) is constructed (beneath the Renaissance tower) by Abd al-Rahman III, and the “haram” or praying hall. The interior space consists of a forest of columns and red and white arches giving a strong chromatic effect. The site is divided into 5 different areas, corresponding each one of them to the different expansions that have occurred on it.

The Roman Period

There is very little information about the origin of Cordoba. The first news date to the Bronze period. There was a native place called “Corduba”. Since 206 b.c. when the city was conquered by the Romans under the rule of “Lucio Mario”, Cordoba became an important city, being used as the place where Roman troops had their base. Cordoba was considered then as the unofficial capital of the “Hispania Ulterior”.

It was from the civil wars between Cæsar and Pompey, when Cordoba started going down as a historical city. After Cæsar won the war, Cordoba suffered a big destruction and the population decreased, though it did not loose its previous privileges. After the administrative reforms started by Augustus, Cordoba received the status of Colony, turning into the capital of the newly created “Bética” province. During the first three centuries of the Roman Empire, the city experienced a big push, when it become the capital of the province. There were schools of very high level and some local personalities became Senators at Rome. Cordoba was the center from where official post was sent to the administrative archives. The trade on oil, mineral and agricultural products, acquired a big importance; this was in part due to the construction of the “Via Augusta” (Augusta Boulevard) that passed over the Roman bridge on the “Guadalquivir”, and joined the cities of “Linares” with “Cadiz”, and the “Betica” with the rest of the Hispanic settlements. The most outstanding figure of the Hispanic-Roman Cordoba was “Séneca” (Lucio Anneo Seneca: Hispanic philosopher) who was “Nero’s” teacher.

When the civil war came to an end, Cordoba received the status of Colony, becoming capital of the newly created “Bética” province. During the first three centuries of the Roman Empire, the city experienced a big impulse, it was the most flourishing in Andalusia. There were Schools of high level. This was in part due to the construction of the “Via Augusta” (Augusta Boulevard) that passed over the Roman bridge on the “Guadalquivir”, and joined the cities of “Linares” with “Cadiz”, and the “Betica” with the rest of the Hispanic settlements. They built a wall around Cordoba, as the archaeological ruins demonstrate.

Visigoth Period

The decline of Cordoba at this period started with "Diocleciano" (Roman Emperor), the status of Capital of Andalusia, that Cordoba had acquired, was moved to "Hispalis" (Seville) along with the Christian movement or expansion. The Christian communities started having great importance as the paleochristian sarcophagus demonstrate, which are kept at the "Alcazar" and at the Archaeological Museum.

In the 5th century a huge transformation took place; Cordoba was plundered by vandals, who gave the actual name to the Andalusian region. The Roman power started disappearing and a Visigoth Doge established at the "Bética". Cordoba suffered for a length of time the rivalries between those who were fighting for the power, and also the fights between "Leovigildo" (Visigoth King of Spain) and his son "Hermenegildo", who ended up conquering Cordoba. From that moment on, a dominant minority imposed over the Hispanic-Roman population.

During the reign of the Catholic "Recaredo", the Visigoth people built the "Basilica de San Vicente" (San Vicente Church), on top of a previous Roman temple, in honour to the Sun, on the same site where later on, the Mosque Aljama was constructed. The nobiliary revolts were constant, which led to the civil wars that preceded the Moslem invasion.

The Muslim Cordoba

In the year 711 Cordoba was conquered by the generals of the Arab invader Tariq. The invaders installed the seat of their government in the Visigothic fortress, located near the present Alcazar of the Catholic Monarchs, and appointed a wali or governor.

Five years after the conquest, the Arabs distinguished Cordoba as the capital of the lands of Al-Andalus. The Roman bridge was rebuilt, the walls were restored and on the left bank of the Guadalquivir was founded the suburb, called Secunda, today known as Campo de la Verdad. In Cordoba, a primitive mosque was founded when the Umayyad and Abbasid were finally separated after a bloody struggle. In the year 756, the Umayyad prince Abd al-Rahman defeated the Abbasid emir and rose to power as the sole authority of Andalusia, having become Abd al-Rahman I. He promoted the establishment of the mosque in 786. His successors fostered the development of culture and in Córdoba mystics, oriental masters, mathematicians, doctors, philosophers and poets settled down. The mosque was completed and enlarged by Abd al-Rahman II.

Little by little the Arab civilization was consolidating. The greatest greatness of Muslim Cordoba was achieved by Abd al-Rahman III. He took the title of Caliph in 929 and made Cordoba an independent caliphate of Damascus and the most flourishing, cultured and populous city in Europe. He enlarged the mosque again and provided it with a courtyard with porticoes. At 8 km from the capital he built the sumptuous palace of Medina Azahara. His son Alhakem II finished off the palatial works, enlarged the mosque again and obtained a library of 400,000 volumes, the most important in the world. According to Arab sources, during its caliphate the city reached a million inhabitants, and had 1,600 mosques, 300,000 homes, 80,000 shops and countless public baths.

This splendour began to decline during the reign of his successor, who left the government in the hands of the warlord Almanzor, who carried out the last expansion of the Mosque.

The Caliphate began to dismember due to the civil wars, which ended with the central power and encouraged the formation of the Taifa kingdoms throughout Andalusia. The Berbers, aided by King Sancho of Castile, seized Medina Azahara in 1010, burning and looting it. During the 11th and 12th centuries Cordoba was just another taifa. It fell into the hands of Seville during the time of the poet king Motamid. Its last little king, Ibn Hud, lost the city to Ferdinand III the Saint.

Among the many sages and artists of the Caliphate Cordoba, the poet Ibn Hazam (994-1064), the philosopher Averroes (1126-1198) and the Jewish medico-thinker Maimonides (1135-1204) stand out.

The Christian Period

On June 29th 1236, Cordoba fell under the domination of the King "Fernando III". After signing the capitulations, the Moslem population was expelled from the town. They began building new churches with a "Fernandino" style (in honour to the King Fernando III), also called the "reconquest style" (Hispanic-Gothic style).

The city continued to be the center of civil struggles, that only calmed down with the "Reyes Católicos" (the Catholic Kings).

16th – 20th Centuries

Cordoba started loosing its importance and population, despite the construction of the "Puerta del Puente" (the Bridge's Door) and the "Plaza de la Corredera" (the "Corredera" Square) by the dynasty of the "Austrias", and the creation of the courts in 1570 by "Felipe II" (Phillip II).

During the reign of "Felipe IV", in the next century, took place the "bread's revolt" due to the shortage of wheat.

During the Independence War in the 19th century, Cordoba went through a patriotic excitement. Years later, Cordoba suffered a period of struggles between absolutists and liberals. In 1868, when "Isabel II" was Queen, the liberals defeated the royalists at the "Alcolea" Bridge.

In the mid 20th century, the city changed its aspect, it reaffirmed the popular traditions and it got modernized.

Discover the evolution of the city until now. Soon the complete video will be projected in different points of the city of Cordoba, the information will be updated when the places are confirmed.

Tips for Visiting the Mezquita Mosque-Cathedral in Córdoba, Andalusia

Opening hours for visiting the Mezquita Mosque-Cathedral in Córdoba are long. Tickets are best bought online but are also sold onsite. The best time to visit is early morning (sometimes free).

Horseshoe-shaped arches in the Mezquita in Cordoba

The Mezquita Mosque-Cathedral in Córdoba is one of the top sights to see in Andalucia. It is one of the most important Islamic buildings in Spain but as a working Roman Catholic Church, opening hours are influenced by religious services. Opening hours for tourists are fairly long but shorter on Sundays and religious holidays. Tickets are fairly pricey and sold onsite or online. Tours are sensible alternatives to ensure skip-the-line admission to avoid queuing inline on warm days. Early birds may get in for free.

Visitors Information for the Mezquita in Córdoba

The opening hours of the Mezquita for tourists visits are fairly long but do note that the whole building is cleared prior to religious services — it is not possible to reenter later in the day on the same ticket. This is especially important on Sundays and some holidays when services are held around noon — although tickets are sold and admission possible until half an hour before closing time, visitors will be moved towards the exit from around 20 minutes prior to closing time.

Opening Hours of the Mezquita-Cathedral in Córdoba

Entrance to Mihrab

The Mezquita Mosque-Cathedral is open for tourist and sightseeing purposes:

The Mezquita is currently open Monday to Friday from 10:00 to 14:00 and from 16:00 to 19:00. On Saturday, the Mezquita is open from 10:00 to 19:00. On Sunday, it is open from 8:30 to 11:30 and 16:00 to 19:00.

Hours are expected to increase again during 2022 with the midday break likely to be canceled. Time-slot reservation tickets are currently mostly available only a month in advance

Although not listed on the official website, the Mezquita is usually open Monday to Saturday for free from 8:30 to 9:20.

On some nights, the special “Soul of Cordoba” light and sound show takes place after dark. Special admission tickets are required.

Opening hours vary during religious holidays and festivals. Check opening times online not only for major holidays but also to not be caught out by local festivals. Cordoba Tourism Office also has a useful online opening hour page for major sights.

The Bell Tower (€3) is open with access starting every half-hour from 9:30 to 18:30. Be on time, it is not possible to join the tour late.

Mass in the Mezquita is daily, except Sunday, in Spanish, at 9:30 — it is usually possible to continue sightseeing afterward for free.

Mass on Sunday is at noon and 13:30 — sightseeing afterward is usually not possible.

Smaller services are also held in the Parroquia del Sagrario — admission to this chapel is directly from the street and staying on afterward for sightseeing in the Mezquita is not possible. These services also do not influence the opening hours of the rest of the building.

Best Times to Visit the Mezquita in Córdoba

Mezquita Arches and Pillars

The best time to visit the Mezquita Mosque-Cathedral is early morning or late afternoon — later than 16:00. Day-trip tours from Seville , Malaga , Granada , the Costa del Sol , and even Madrid generally arrive from 11:00 onwards and leave by 16:00. Ditto for visitors seeing the Mezquita on a short stop-over en route to the tourist hotspots.  Early morning has the advantage of being free, although the treasury and cathedral part will be closed. Guided tours are not allowed at this hour.

The Mezquita is busiest on Saturday and Sunday, although the current mid-day closing stacks the tourists a bit into shorter hours on all days.

The high season for tourist trips to Córdoba is late spring, early summer — April to June — with Easter Week particularly busy but other festivals very common too. September to mid-November is also a popular time to visit the Mezquita. Córdoba in summer (July & August) is VERY hot.

Buying Tickets for the Mezquita

Mezquita Ticket Queues.jpg

Tickets for the Mezquita are a rather hefty €11 with only children 10 to 14 receiving discounts of €6, and free for children under 10. Students (-26) or seniors (65+) pay €9. Buy tickets online from the Mezquita or on-site (prices are the same).

The “Soul of Cordoba” light and sound show is €18 — see below.

The bell tower is €3 — tickets and reservations at a different table just below the tower, if not purchased online. Be on time, as it is not possible to join the tour late.

As the Mezquita is still a fully functioning Roman Catholic Church the usual dress code is applied such as no hats or caps and no bare shoulders or knees.

Bags bigger than a small day pack are not allowed inside and there is no storage for luggage or strollers. Book luggage storage online in Cordoba.

Guided Tours of the Mezquita in Córdoba

Organ in the Mezquita

Information provided inside the Mezquita is rather limited. A good guidebook , audio guide, multimedia guide, or guided tour may be needed to fully appreciate the architecture, art, and history of the building.

Although the Mezquita is not as busy as the Real Alcazar and Cathedral in Seville , or especially the Nasrid Palace in the Alhambra in Granada, waiting can still be an issue on busy days. Guided tours are a good option to ensure admission at a specific time on a given day and often offer good value. The availability of online tickets directly from the Mezquita will hopefully put an end to skip-the-line resellers that simply provide the ticket at twice the price.

Combination tours with other sights in Córdoba may offer better value — walking tours of the adjacent old Jewish quarter are very popular. The Alcazar of the Catholic Kings is often included — the building should not be confused with the very impressive Real Alcazar in Seville but the gardens are very pleasant.

Guided tours of the Mezquita are usually just over an hour, which is sufficient to see the highlights. Afterward, tour members may stay longer inside if preferred. Tours that include a climb of the tower, which is done unguided, usually allow for an hour extra time.

Night Visits to the Mezquita

Red and White Arches

The Soul of Córdoba is a nighttime visit to the Mezquita with audio guides arranged by the cathedral. These visits take around an hour and are restricted to a maximum of 100 people, which still leaves the vast Mezquita fairly empty.

The audioguide is done by the Cathedral so some may find it a bit heavy on the Roman Catholic and Christian tradition but the Mezquita, which is fairly dark during the day, is beautifully lit on these visits.

The Soul of Córdoba night visits to the Mezquita is €18 (€12 for seniors, children, and students up to 26, free for children under 7). Tickets are best bought online in advance but are also available from the regular ticket office in the Patio de los Naranjas.

During winter, the tours are usually on Friday and Saturday but the rest of the year daily except on Sunday. Tour times depend on the season and start between 20:00 and 23:00 and last for an hour.

See the Mezquita in Córdoba for Free

Cupola in the Maqsura

Although not clearly published on the official website, it is possible to enter the Mezquita for free on weekdays and Saturdays from 8:30 to 9:20. The building is gradually evacuated from around 9:10 onwards so be early rather than late.

During this period, access to the choir and transept are roped off but most visitors could probably still see enough to satisfy basic curiosity. The treasury is also closed (but its appeal is fairly limited anyway) while some chapels may be unlit. The best parts of the Mezquita – the glorious original prayer hall with its forest of pillars with red-and-white horseshoe-shaped and Roman arches are fully accessible.

Horseshoe Arches in the Mezquita

To get the most out of the free hour, be at the Mezquita at opening time. Visitors are only allowed into the orange tree courtyard when the bells ring — the Puerta de los Deanes in Calle Torrijos is the closest to the entrance into the Mezquita (Puerta de las Palmas) used for free visits. Get there first so as not to lose time in the security check line.

Many visitors may find this 45 minutes quite sufficient to see the Mezquita, especially if not interested in the various chapels. (Many have fine art but better may be seen elsewhere.) For more time return another day or buy a ticket and enter again later in the day or attend the short 9:30 service (in Spanish) and stay on for more sightseeing afterward — not officially allowed but churchgoers are rarely forced out, except on Sunday when hours are different.

Afterward, make a reservation to see the bell tower before the masses arrive.

Climbing the Bell Tower of the Mezquita in Córdoba

Mezquita seen from the Bell Tower

The bell tower of the Mezquita may be climbed separately from seeing the Mezquita itself. Admission is €3 — no discounts. Buy these tickets and make a time-slot reservation at the special desk right at the bottom of the tower, or even more sensible, buy online with a time-slot reservation.

Mezquita Bell Tower

Visitors climb the tower in groups of 20 with the tour starting every half hour from 9:30 to 17:30 (18:30 in summer). Be on time, as it is not possible to catch up once the tour has started. (It is not a guided tour — the accompanying official basically just unlocks the various gates.)

The climb is fairly simple with good staircases and not particularly narrow passages. The three main stops are the top of the Baroque cupola of the Puerta del Perdon, the first set of bells, and the upper-level terrace with the second set of bells. During the climb, visitors also see some of the decorations of the encased Moorish minaret.

The views of Córdoba and the Guadalquivir valley are magnificent — the bell tower is at 54 m by far the highest structure in the region. Particularly interesting is the view of the Mezquita roof to see how the transept and flying buttresses were added to the otherwise low-roofed building.

History of the Mosque of Cordoba

Parts of the mosque of cordoba, the old minaret and the bell tower, the naranjos courtyard, the "forest" of columns, the arches of the mosque of córdoba, the quibla wall and the mihrab, the transformation to cathedral, buy tickets for the mosque of córdoba, cordoba mosque hours.

In 756, Abd al-Rahman I (the last living descendant of the Umayyad dynasty) founded the independent Emirate of Córdoba , proclaiming himself Emir and founding a political entity independent of the Abbasid caliphate of Baghdad. After that, he practically unified the entire peninsula under his rule and made Córdoba the most important capital in the known world.

At that time, the city of Córdoba had all the resources and infrastructures of a booming cit y, in addition to being in a very fertile basin on the banks of the Guadalquivir river. By the year 929, when the Caliphate of Córdoba was proclaimed, the city reached its peak with half a million inhabitants.

According to the records of the time, the construction of the Mosque of Córdoba began in the year 784 . It was built on what had previously been the Basilica of San Vicente Mártir. Apparently, Abd al-Rahman I reached an agreement with the Christians of the city to share the space under a system of schedules. Until the conquest of the Christian kingdoms, the Mosque underwent different transformations and extensions until it became the second largest mosque in the world, only behind that of Mecca. In 1238, after the conquest, it was consecrated as a Christian cathedral

The Mosque originally had a smaller size than what we can appreciate today . The Mosque of Córdoba consisted of two distinct areas that can be seen today. On the one hand, the current patio of the orange trees (former caliphal or shan ablution courtyard), in which the minaret was located (currently under the Renaissance bell tower). On the other hand, the prayer room or haram (interior), which stands out for being a true “forest” of columns and colorful arches.

One of the great peculiarities of this mosque is that it faces south, while Mecca (the place where Muslims should direct their prayers) is to the southeast. This particularity has been appreciated in other mosques in Morocco.

During the rule of Emir Hisham I a first minaret was built , which was demolished and rebuilt by Abd al-Rahman III. At that time, this construction, whose function was to call the Muslim population to prayer, reached 47 meters in height.

With the Christian conquest and the conversion of the mosque into a Christian cathedral, the minaret became the Bell Tower. The remains of the Muslim construction are believed to have been embedded in the Christian tower, although different drawings of the time are preserved that recreate how the imposing minaret of Abd al-Rahman III was.

The  Naranjos Courtyard  (the Orange Tree Courtyard)  was originally what is known as the ablution courtyard, a space in which the faithful washed or washed (ablution) before entering the interior of the mosque to pray. Also, it was a place of great social importance, where the Koran was taught or trials were held. In turn, the patio or shan is a space that represents “paradise” on earth.

With the conquest this place loses its original purpose and becomes a main garden. The most representative element today, the orange trees, would be planted around the 16th century.

Probably one of the issues that most attracts the attention of the Mosque of Córdoba is the so-called “forest of columns” inside. As soon as we enter the vision that is presented to us is that of a continuous succession of columns and colorful arches one behind the other . In total, this “forest of columns” is made up of 1,300 marble, granite and jasper columns on which 365 colorful horseshoe arches rest.

As a curiosity, a good part of these columns were not built specifically for the Mosque. They do not even date from the Andalusian period, as they were actually extracted from some of the points with Roman remains in Córdoba or even from buildings from the Visigoth period.

Most of the interior of the Mosque of Córdoba was and is occupied by what was the haram, the great room where the faithful gathered to pray. The haram of the mosque of Córdoba was modified between the 8th and 10th centuries , expanding continuously due to the growth of the population of Córdoba, which demanded more space to pray. Abd al-Rahman I, Abd al-Rahman II and al-Hakam carried out the main extensions of the enclosure.

After the Castilian conquest of Córdoba, a period of transformations began in the Mosque that would end the haram and its usefulness. In 1236, Ferdinand III of Castile converted the mosque into a Cathedral and consecrated it to the Virgin Mary. Although the uses changed, the architecture did not undergo a major transformation.

Without a doubt, the arches of the Mosque of Córdoba are the great icons of this monument . Both semicircular and horseshoe, these architectural elements, together with the columns, allow the Mosque of Córdoba to occupy such dimensions.

The arches of the interior are superimposed, being the horseshoe the one that is located under the semicircular. In both cases the materials used for its construction were limestone and red brick. In total, there are 365 arches that make up the Mosque of Córdoba, these being one of its symbols.

The quibla wall is one of the most interesting elements of the Mosque of Córdoba . It is the place where the faithful look while they pray, the point that marks the orientation and where the mihrab is located, a space in the form of a semicircular niche that must be oriented towards Mecca.

One of the most interesting curiosities of the quibla is that “it is not oriented towards Mecca.” The orientation was supposedly inspired by the original plans of the city, so the architects decided to stick with the same orientation.

For its part, the mihrab is the most sacred place in the mosque, it has a heptagonal shape and is covered by an octagonal vault. The façade is adorned by a banked horseshoe arch with a spectacular decoration of mosaics with geometric shapes and plants that quote some verses from the Koran.

With the Castilian conquest of Córdoba, the Mosque is no longer used for Muslim worship . Fernando III of Castile converted the site into a Cathedral and consecrated it to the Virgin Mary. At first, no transformations were made in the architecture of the monument, the great alterations took place between the 16th and 18th centuries.

The greatest transformation took place throughout the 16th century , when a large Christian nave was erected in the middle of the Mosque, forming a new Main Chapel under Renaissance parameters. For this construction to be carried out, Emperor Carlos V had to intercede with the rejection of the Córdoba municipal council, which did not accept the intention of Bishop Alonso Manrique. In this same century, in addition to various chapels, the Mannerist altarpiece of the main chapel designed by Alonso Matías would be built.

To be able to visit this spectacular Cordoba jewel, you need to buy your tickets days in advance, since it is one of the most emblematic venues in the Andalusian city and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Do not miss this impressive unique place in the world, take a walk through the first mosque built by the first emir of Al-Andalus and travel back to centuries and centuries of history.

The Mosque-Cathedral is open every day from 10am to 6pm (7pm in the months of March to October). On Sundays and holidays, the hours are from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

If you want to attend mass, the hours are from Monday to Saturday at 9:30 a.m., and on Sundays at 12 p.m. and 1:30 p.m.

¿Dispones de sólo 2 o 3 días para conocer la ciudad? ¿Vienes a Córdoba de escapada de fin de semana y no sabes qué hacer? No te preocupes, nosotros te ayudamos.
