LOS ANGELES , July 6, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — After more than 50 years of touring, and consistently selling out arenas and stadiums worldwide, the Eagles announced today that their upcoming “The Long Goodbye”  will be the band’s final tour.

Thirteen shows will be initially announced. The first set of dates will begin September 7, 2023 , in New York .

The Eagles’ long-time contemporaries and fellow Hall of Famers, Steely Dan,  will be joining these historic shows and commemorating their own 50+ year career.

Presale tickets and VIP packages will be available starting Wednesday, July 12 for all announced shows. The general on-sale will start Friday, July 14 at 10:00 AM local time.

During “The Long Goodbye,” the Eagles – Don Henley , Joe Walsh , Timothy B. Schmit , with Vince Gill and Deacon Frey – will perform as many shows in each market as their audience demands. The tour is expected to continue into 2025.

Over the band’s more than 50 years of touring, the Eagles have performed more than 1,000 concerts around the world, accounting for more than 15 million tickets. Eagles’ tours have consistently ranked in the Top 10 of both concert industry publications, Billboard and Pollstar .

In the Fall of 1971, the Eagles formed, pioneered, and personified a uniquely American musical style blending country, folk, R&B, rock, and pop sensibilities, and would go onto become one of the most creatively and commercially successful bands of all time.  In today’s faddish, fractured, rock landscape, the Eagles retain an appeal that transcends both generation and genre, cementing the band’s role as enduring musical icons.

The Eagles have sold more than 150 million albums worldwide, scored six #1 albums, and topped the singles charts five times. They earned six GRAMMY Awards, were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1998, in their very first year of eligibility, and received the Kennedy Center Honors in 2016.

The band’s Greatest Hits 1971-1977 is the best-selling album in history, with the RIAA certifying the collection at 38-times Platinum.  Hotel California is the third best-selling U.S. album in history, certified 26-times Platinum.  After its release in 1976, it topped the charts and earned two GRAMMY Awards for “New Kid In Town” and “Hotel California.”

Eagles Join Parade of Acts on Final Tours With a ‘Long Goodbye’

The band, which performed a “farewell” tour in 2003, will begin what’s billed as a last run of dates in September.

Eagles are touring for the last time. Again.

The band, whose country-tinged rock hits in the 1970s like “Hotel California” and “Life in the Fast Lane” made it one of the biggest-selling acts of all time, announced the Long Goodbye on Thursday, booked as the group’s final tour.

The tour — featuring the core Eagles members Don Henley, Joe Walsh and Timothy B. Schmit, along with Vince Gill and Deacon Frey (whose father was Glenn Frey, an original Eagle) — is set to open at Madison Square Garden on Sept. 7. That is the first of an initial batch of 13 dates mostly on the East Coast through Nov. 17, with Steely Dan as the opening act. In a statement, the Eagles floated the possibility of longer runs at each venue, saying they would “perform as many shows in each market as their audience demands.” The tour is expected to continue into 2025.

As longtime Eagles fans know, this is not the first time the band has signaled a sunset run. Back in 2003, it embarked on a tour called Farewell I . But there is good reason to believe they may be nearing the end. Glenn Frey, one of the group’s founding members, died in 2016 . Henley, the only member from its founding in 1971 who is still in the band, is 75; in an appearance before a Congressional committee in 2020 about copyright law, he said he was “in the final chapter of my career.” (Or maybe not. Bob Dylan, who is 82, is on a tour planned into 2024 , and the 86-year-old blues guitar hero Buddy Guy is on his own goodbye outing.)

Farewell tours have a way of winding on for years, and can be huge moneymakers. Kiss did its first in 2000 and has had more than a dozen tours since then; its End of the Road Tour started in 2019 and has dates booked through December. Elton John’s Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour began in 2018 and is set to finally conclude this weekend in Sweden, with at least $910 million in ticket sales, according to Billboard.

Among others now on their self-described final tours are Aerosmith, Foreigner, the punk band NOFX and Dead & Company, featuring original members of the Grateful Dead with John Mayer.

The Eagles are ready to fly one last time, soaring for a farewell tour this fall to cap off their five decades of touring.

“The Eagles have had a miraculous 52-year odyssey, performing for people all over the globe; keeping the music alive in the face of tragic losses, upheavals and setbacks of many kinds,” the “Hotel California” and “Desperado” hitmakers said in a Thursday statement .

“We know how fortunate we are, and we are truly grateful. Our long run has lasted far longer than any of us ever dreamed. But, everything has its time, and the time has come for us to close the circle.”

The Los Angeles-formed rock band — eternally associated with the Southern California country-rock sound — will launch their Long Goodbye tour in New York’s Madison Square Garden on Sept. 7, announcing 12 additional dates Thursday with the possibility of more to come. However, no California dates have yet been announced.

“The official farewell tour is currently in the planning stages. We want to give all our fans a chance to see us on this final round. So, scheduling information will be released as dates are set,” said the band, whose current lineup includes drummer and vocalist Don Henley, famed guitarist Joe Walsh, bassist Timothy B. Schmit and guitarist Vince Gill. Gill joined the band after founding member and guitarist Glenn Frey died at 67 in 2016 . (Frey’s son Deacon also played with the band for nearly five years before announcing his departure in 2022 .)

“The difficulties of booking venues for multiple nights may require us to return to certain cities, depending on demand. But, we hope to see as many of you as we can, before we finish up,” they said. “Most importantly, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts for embracing this band and its music. At the end of the day, you are the reason we have been able to carry on for over five decades. This is our swan song, but the music goes on and on.”

The six-time Grammy Award-winning group and Rock and Roll Hall of Famers will be joined by contemporary act Steely Dan, whose members will be commemorating their own half-century spanning career as well.

Few bands were better at distilling the vibe of Los Angeles in the 1970s than the Eagles, and as its singer and guitarist, Glenn Frey served as a sort of mellow ambassador of our city.

The bands have scheduled shows through mid-November in Boston, Newark, Denver, Indianapolis, Detroit, Cleveland, Atlanta, Charlotte and Raleigh, N.C., Lexington, Ky., and St. Paul, Minn. The full schedule can be found here . The Long Goodbye tour follows their recently expanded Hotel California tour , named for their landmark 1976 album that they played in its entirety during the tour, which wrapped in Baltimore in April.

Presale tickets and VIP packages for the Long Goodbye will be made available July 12 for all announced shows. General on-sale begins July 14.

Eagles

The Eagles , one of the most successful and longest-running acts in the history of popular music, have announced the first of what they say are their “final” tour dates. After 52 years, more than a thousand concerts and over 150 million albums sold, the group has announced the initial 13 dates of their final farewell tour, beginning on Sept. 7 in New York, with more to be added.

According to the announcement, the Eagles — Don Henley, Joe Walsh and Timothy B. Schmit, with Vince Gill and Deacon Frey — will perform “as many shows in each market as their audience demands.” The tour is expected to continue into 2025.

Eagles Are Reelin’ in Retirement With Steely Dan

Portrait of Devon Ivie

Sure, you can check out any time you like at the Hotel California, but they made it clear you can never truly leave. Eagles ’ long run will end with their upcoming tour, their final outing as a band after five decades. “We know how fortunate we are and we are truly grateful,” the members said in a collective statement . “But everything has its time, and the time has come for us to close the circle. The official farewell tour is currently in the planning stages. We want to give all our fans a chance to see us on this final round.” The tour is expected to last until 2025 and will be scheduled “depending on demand” across cities. (Let’s try to summon Eras Tour level of chaos to honor them.) “Most importantly, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts for embracing this band and its music,” they added. “At the end of the day, you are the reason we have been able to carry on for over five decades. This is our swan song, but the music goes on and on.” Don Henley, Joe Walsh, and Timothy B. Schmit, along with Vince Gill and Deacon Frey , will, of course, be present for the entirety of the tour.

Steely Dan will be joining Eagles as a “special guest” opener for the fall tour dates, adding an intriguing bookend to their relationship. For those not well versed in their friendly rivalry, the bands traded jabs during their prolific mid-’70s outputs: Donald Fagen and Walter Becker teased on The Royal Scam ’s “Everything You Did” that a bickering couple should “turn up the Eagles, the neighbors are listening”; Eagles soon responded with a line in “Hotel California” in which “they stab it with their steely knives, but they just can’t kill the beast.” (Henley was also fired by Steely Dan during the Aja sessions, which was pretty much a rite of passage for any musician.) Glenn Frey later voiced his admiration for Steely Dan’s approach to music, which served as an inspiration for several Hotel California tracks. “We were sort of trying to expand our lyrical horizons and just take on something in the realm of the bizarre, as Steely Dan had done,” Frey explained . “One of the things that impressed us about Steely Dan was that they would say anything in their songs, and it didn’t have to necessarily make sense.” That’s great, but we’re mostly hopeful this tour can serve as a “Second Arrangement” debut .

For a band that famously said they would only get back together when “hell freezes over”, the Eagles (not The Eagles, apparently) seem to tour so regularly that some form of major climatic event is clearly long overdue. The band are currently coming towards the end of a fairly lengthy jaunt around the UK and Ireland and, fresh from a four night stint at London’s O2, appeared on Monday evening on the stage of the relatively intimate 13,500 capacity First Direct Arena in Leeds. This tour is billed as the History Of The Eagles, and it pretty much lives up to that billing with a couple of exceptions, more of which later. The twenty-seven song set list is a good career retrospective, and the performance was as flawless as you might expect from such a skilled bunch of old pros. The evening started in a low key way with chief Eagles Don Henley and Glenn Frey ambling on stage, picking up a couple of acoustic guitars and making themselves comfortable on an equipment crate and stool before playing a lovely version of “Saturday Night” from 1973’s “Desperado” album. As the cheers died down they were joined on stage by Bernie Leadon who left the band in 1975, but happily is guesting throughout the current dates. Leadon’s familiar fair, curly locks may have long gone, but his voice is still sweet – as he evidenced on the second number “Train Leaves Here This Morning”- and his guitar playing remains classy. The early part of the first set suffered a little as video interview clips were shown which didn’t help the early rhythm of the show, but in hindsight these were probably deemed necessary to fill some time as additional band members wandered on stage, pieces of kit were introduced and the stage set grew. Bassist Timothy B Schmit joined Henley, Frey and Leadon for “Peaceful Easy Feeling” before Henley took a seat at a small drum kit stage left and the band started “Witchy Woman” while Joe Walsh wandered on unannounced from stage left. Four songs in and the five Eagles were finally present and correct. The remainder of the first set comprised “Doolin’Dalton/Desperado (Reprise)”, “Already Gone” (which featured superb lead playing from Leadon), “Best Of My Love”, “Lyin’ Eyes” (dedicated by Frey to his first wife, “plaintiff”), “One Of These Nights” and “Take It To The Limit”. During this first set Walsh looked rather subdued, perhaps as the songs predated his joining the band but he seemed content to remain low key on these tracks and leave the bulk of the playing to Frey, Leadon and additional guitarist Steuart Smith who throughout the evening contributed a significant amount of excellent guitar work, including a note perfect rendition of Don Felder’s parts of “Hotel California”, on a double neck guitar, naturally. Throughout the evening Walsh worked his way through a staggering array of guitars which pleased the axe-nerds in my area of the crowd as he seemingly changed guitar every song. The ebullient and wisecracking Frey – sample: “I’m from Detroit where mother is a half a word” – announced a short interval with the excuse that with such a lengthy set the band were required a bathroom break to get through it. The interval also saw the last of Leadon’s contributions until the encores. Post interval the journey through the band’s history continued with “Pretty Maids All In A Row”, Walsh’s first vocal lead of the evening. Walsh’s vocals may be fragile but they are endearing, and really it’s his guitar playing that people particularly want to hear and the last third of the set is where he comes to the fore, cutting loose on “Life’s Been Good”, the old James Gang song “Funk #49” and an encore of “Rocky Mountain Way” where the backdrop showed Joe dressed as superman flying across the Rockies as the real Joe dazzled us with his Talk Box and some gonzo riffing. Timothy B Schmit provided gorgeous vocals on “I Can’t Tell You Why” and “Love Will Keep Us Alive” but the vocal star of the Eagles remains Don Henley, possessor of one of the great American voices. His singing on such numbers as “The Best Of My Love”, “Desperado”, “One Of These Nights” and “The Long Run” were simply sublime. Before “In The City” Frey thanked the audience for their respect in remaining seated through the slower ballads but advised that they could now feel free to express themselves. Most didn’t however, and remained seated although the band didn’t seem to mind. The set list was pretty much perfect – although perhaps I’m alone in finding it strange that the “Long Road Out Of Eden” album was ignored entirely throughout the evening’s walk through the band’s history. Not their finest work, but I’d quite like to have heard “Waiting In The Weeds” for example at the expense of “Those Shoes”. The band was augmented by five additional musicians – they were excellent and deserve to be name checked so take a bow Steuart Smith, Scott Crago, Richard Davis, Will Hollis and Michael Thompson. When all is said and done, it has to be said that it was a damn good show. The sound was immaculate throughout with every individual instrument crystal clear. Some may criticise the slickness or predictability of the performance but with ticket prices so high the audience has a right to expect a professional show. The band’s request that audience members remain seated during much of the performance seemed to suit most people, and, it has to be said, their somewhat controversial and often ridiculed “strictly no photography” edict meant that you saw most of the show first hand rather than though the screen of the cell phone of the person in front of you, and this made a surprisingly welcome change. Including the interval and video segments the performance lasted around three hours, which contrasted significantly with Eric Clapton’s miserly eighty five minute performance at the same venue the night before, which still had people grumbling twenty four hours later. There was a sour note to the evening though, and something of a jarring omission. The tour is billed as the History Of The Eagles and while former member Randy Meisner was given a respectful shout out by Frey during the introduction to “Take It To The Limit”, Don Felder’s contribution to the band was studiously and, to my mind, rather pettily ignored altogether. His airbrushing from this history seems so Stalinist that it was almost a surprise to see him still appearing in the photos used in the programme and not as a silhouette. To me this reflected poorly on Frey and Henley, who had they name checked Felder, admitted that they had had their differences, but acknowledged that he too was part of their history they would have looked much more gracious, and bigger people.

I bought tickets to accompany the missus, she’s the Eagles fan, I’m more of a metal fan. However, The Eagles were fantastic, musically of course they were note perfect and vocally - apart from the bass player, his voice was a bit weak to be honest- spot on.

All the favourites from down the ages where there with the crowd singing along to almost every song, there was a lot of love in the crowd!

I particularly liked Joe Walsh’ performance, in the city and Rocky Mountain way we’re powerful and energetic.

The back catalogue is huge and every track a crowd pleaser, surprisingly Hotel California was not the show closer, brilliant as it was, that honour was left to Desperado, as with every track tonight it was delivered beautifully, would I recommend an Eagles gig to anyone unsure whether to chance it or not, absolutely.

I have always wanted to see The Eagles as a matter of fact it is a bucket list concert. My very first time going to the see them and I was not disappointed. Three and a half hours of pure music with a small break. I sang along with almost every song the band played. I have gotten used to politics in concerts this was a politics free zone. thank you so much for the break.

One gripe if I have one it seemed like the special guest was Joe Walsh, he played James Gang to Eagles songs. It is a small gripe because the guy is just amazing. One thing I noticed just from being old when the girl came out in the Hotel California set to flip the album she actually did not flip the the album. yes I am old. but it was a great effect.

I would go see them again in 1/2 a heart beat.

What. A. Show! I grew up listening to the Eagles, either on album, CD, or my dad playing his guitar. It was a truly wonderful experience to be able to see them live with my dad and watch his enjoyment of seeing a band he’s loved for so long live. The staging and pace of the show was absolutely amazing and set the tone perfectly, and the graphics and lighting designers definitely did their best work. We were close to the stage and it was absolutely fascinating to watch all the cameras recording the event, as well. The band was exceptional but the team behind them is definitely to be commended for this one! I hope everyone who sees this tour has the same level of enjoyment my family and I did!

Experiencing the September, 2019 Eagles "Hotel California" concert at the MGM was a musical trip into near perfection.

The sound was very good even in our very expensive nosebleed seats.

The place was packed and the audience nonstop in its loud and persistent appreciation of all things Eagles, especially new members Deacon Frey and Vince Gill.

Longtime mega-talented members Henley, Walsh and Smith were true crowd pleasers, as they always are.

Having a full orchestra and an angelic choir from UNLV supporting the endeavor was at times ethereally mesmerizing to the point of enthrallment.

Once again the Eagles have lived up to their reputation as purveyors of musical excellence.

The Eagles were amazing. After the death of Glenn Frey I feared that my Eagles would be no more. But the addition of Deacon Frey & Vince Gill was a perfect fit. The fact that Deacon looks just like his dad from the early days & he has a great voice & handles the guitar like a pro. The Eagles did not disappoint any of their fans while playing 2 plus hours. Thank you for staying together & keeping the Music alive. Vince you did an amazing job filling some empty shoes, Don , Joe & Timothy & the rest of the band you are all true musicians. I grew up on your music & thankful you are continuing to tour!

Awesome night in the presence of pure music legends.

This was my 7th Eagles gig and 1st since the sad loss of Glen.

So it was a bit of a night of raw emotion but the tightness of the harmonies the exceptional vocal ability of all of the band including Vince gill stu Smith and doing his father proud Deavon Frey made it my most favourite Eagles gig.

And of course the madman who is Joe Walsh was again in cracking form with Don holding it all together along with Timothy.

Really was a night to remember 2 and a half hours of pure class you could reach out and touch the love in the room.

Magnificent opening with Seven Bridge Road that you know instantly that it will be a magnificent concert.

With an emotional contribution by Deacon Frey as a perfect replacement for his fatger, great voicr, great performsnce. Vince Gill is a good addition to the voices of the Eagles.

Joe Walsh is taking just enough space with some of his solo work, and shows that the Eagles bring more than just country rock.

A feast of almost all their hits, with Hotel California and Desperado as encores. Eagles as you expect to be.

We went home very pleased that we were part of this.

Outstanding show! They came on early so that they could do a 2 and a half hour long set. Plenty of the favourites from over the years. Glenn Frey's son was excellent as were the sets.

Not even the drunk old men behind me (that were under some illusion that not only could they sing but they could also mimic the sound of a guitar) were able to spoil the evening.

Sheryl Crow (the Support Act!) was also on top form.

Legendary Rock Band The Eagles Announce Final Tour, ‘The Long Goodbye’

eagles rock band tour

A sad day for fans of The Eagles.

The iconic rock and roll band announced this morning their final tour,  Eagles: The Long Goodbye.

“The Eagles have had a miraculous 52-year odyssey, performing for people all over the globe, keeping the music alive in the face of tragic losses, upheavals, and setbacks of many kinds.

Credit and thanks go to our longtime management team, our dedicated road crew, and our exceptional backup musicians for providing skilled and steadfast support throughout these many years.

We know how fortunate we are, and we are truly grateful.”

While the announcement of this final tour is only shown with thirteen booked dates across the United States, it comes with the caveat of a tour unlike any other.

The Eagles plan to keep the tour going as long as there is market demand from their fans.

In their statement announcing the tour, the band noted:

“The official farewell tour is currently in the planning stages. We want to give all our fans a chance to see us in this final round. So, scheduling information will be released as dates are set.

The difficulties of booking venues for multiple nights may require us to return to certain cities, depending on demand. But, we hope to see as many of you as we can before we finish up.”

So, in theory, the tour could go well into 2024, if not longer. The end that has no end.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Eagles (@eagles)

The iconic band will be accompanied on currently announced dates by Steely Dan, and Vince Gill will continue to tour with the band on their final stretch.

Gill joined the band in 2017 alongside Deacon Frey, the son of late guitarist Glenn Frey.

When Vince Gill was approached to join the group, many die-hard fans gave him a lot of backlash, which he quickly addressed at the time. He quickly notes that his addition to the band will never come close to Frey’s impact as an original member.

Back in 2022, during an interview with The Medina Gazette ,  he expressed his gratitude for the experience noting:

“I don’t think the Eagles get enough credit for the contributions they made to country music, let alone the No. 1 and No. 3 records of all time. The impact they had on country music started back in the early ’70s. That became more of a blueprint for how some of the country records got made.

So I realize that and respect that. It’s just been a pretty surreal experience.”

Tickets for  The Long Goodbye Tour  go on sale July 14th at 10 AM local time. If you want a more elevated concert experience, VIP packages for all announced dates go on sale on July 12th.

While an iconic five decades of The Eagles are coming to an end, I have a feeling these guys will have the demand to continue adding shows for quite some time.

Who is Currently Performing with The Eagles? An In-Depth Guide to the Legendary Band’s Current Lineup

Who is Currently Performing with The Eagles

The Eagles are undeniably one of the most iconic and best-selling bands in rock n‘ roll history. Since forming in Los Angeles in 1971, the band has crafted an extensive catalogue of timeless hits and created a legacy that cemented their status as musical legends. While the Eagles disbanded in 1980, they reunited in 1994 for the wildly successful Hell Freezes Over tour and have been actively touring and recording ever since.

However, in recent years the band suffered the tragic loss of two integral founding members – guitarist Glenn Frey passed away in 2016 and guitarist Bernie Leadon passed in 2021. Despite this, the surviving original members and talented new additions are determined to keep the Eagles‘ spirit alive by continuing to perform their catalog of classics to appreciative audiences around the world.

Let‘s take an in-depth look at the stellar cast of musicians currently flying the Eagles banner and keeping their musical legacy soaring.

Founding Members Still Anchor the Band

The two remaining original continuous members providing a strong foundation in the current Eagles lineup are drummer and vocalist Don Henley and guitarist and vocalist Joe Walsh .

Henley, along with Glenn Frey, founded the band back in 1971 and for many fans is the distinctive voice that defines the Eagles sound. In addition to his immaculate drumming, Henley sang lead on hits like “One of These Nights”, “The Long Run” and “The Boys of Summer”. Walsh first joined the band in 1975 in time for their career-defining Hotel California album. His fierce guitar playing is all over Eagles classics like “Life in the Fast Lane” and “Pretty Maids All in a Row”.

Both Henley and Walsh also cultivated massively successful solo careers over the years in addition to their contributions as Eagles. However, they remain dedicated to the band that made them global superstars. According to Ultimate Classic Rock critic Dave Lifton, Henley and Walsh provide “both the musical foundation and institutional knowledge that helps the rest of this lineup excel.”

Vince Gill Adds New Dimensions to the Band

After Glenn Frey‘s tragic and unexpected passing in 2016, the band recruited acclaimed country musician Vince Gill to come in and try to fill the large void left by one of their primary vocalists and songwriters. While certainly a daunting task, Gill has excelled beyond expectations by bringing his own flair and style to the band‘s catalogue of hits.

In addition to being a highly skilled guitarist with his own distinctive tone, Gill is known for his pure, smooth tenor voice that melds perfectly with harmonic-rich Eagles songs. His country music pedigree combined with rock sensibilities have added exciting new facets to the band.

According to Don Henley, Gill has been “a perfect fit musically and personally” and his addition to the band has reinvigorated their live performances. Fans who were initially skeptical have fully embraced Gill‘s energy and vocal talents.

Deacon Frey Joins to Honor His Father

In 2017, Glenn Frey‘s son Deacon Frey also officially joined the Eagles lineup for live shows. Deacon had previously toured with the band alongside his father and was determined to help continue his dad‘s musical legacy. Still in his 20s, Deacon contributes his talents on vocals, guitar, piano, and mandolin during concerts and has been enthusiastically welcomed into the Eagles family.

According to Don Henley, “Deacon‘s energy and passion for this music is inspiring. The band loves him, and so do the fans.” Having Deacon join to take over his father‘s vocals adds even more emotion and heart to the band‘s performances. Deacon has more than lived up to his father‘s legacy, helping the Eagles soar to new heights.

Timothy B. Schmit Anchors Them on Bass since the 70s

While not an original founding member, bassist and vocalist Timothy B. Schmit has been with the band since 1979 after replacing original bassist Randy Meisner. Schmit‘s crystal clear tenor voice and high harmonies have become a staple of the Eagles‘ trademark sound.

Schmit sang lead vocals on hit singles like “I Can‘t Tell You Why” and has been providing the steady rhythmic foundation on bass throughout the band‘s live concerts and studio recordings for over 40 years now. His musical chemistry with Henley, Walsh, Gill, and Deacon Frey is seamless and helps recreate that classic Eagles magic fans have loved for decades.

Key Stats on the Legendary Eagles:

  • 6 Grammy Awards Won
  • 150+ million albums sold worldwide
  • 5 number one singles on the Billboard Hot 100 chart
  • 240+ weeks total on the Billboard 200 album charts
  • $250+ million in concert grosses since reuniting in 1994
  • Inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1998

Hotel California 2022 Tour Electrifies Audiences

The current incarnation of the Eagles has been thrilling audiences on their Hotel California 2022 tour across North America. Their concerts see the band perform their entire iconic 1976 album Hotel California from start to finish before treating fans to a long set filled with other classics from their unparalleled catalog.

Reviews of the new lineup have been glowing, with critics and fans raving about the fresh energy and outstanding musicianship Gill and Deacon Frey have brought to the legendary band.

Here‘s a look at what each member brings to the table musically when the Eagles take the stage in 2022:

  • Don Henley – Lead vocals, drums, percussion
  • Joe Walsh – Lead guitar, rhythm guitar, keyboards, vocals
  • Vince Gill – Guitar, mandolin, vocals
  • Deacon Frey – Guitar, piano, vocals
  • Timothy B. Schmit – Bass guitar, vocals

It‘s evident that – even with the passing of key original members Glenn Frey and Bernie Leadon – the Eagles‘ spirit and top-notch musicianship continues to thrive thanks to this stellar current lineup. The band sounds as tight as ever and their shows consistently garner rave reviews.

Don Henley, Joe Walsh, Timothy B. Schmit, Deacon Frey, and Vince Gill all possess tremendous individual talent while also demonstrating an ensemble cohesion that allows them to soar through the Eagles catalog with ease. Their passion and commitment to honoring the Eagles‘ musical legacy is apparent through ever note they play.

For long-time fans or newcomers just discovering their music, the current Eagles lineup delivers a live concert experience that reminds the world why they are one of the most beloved and enduring American rock bands of all time.

Love ‘em or hate ‘em, the Eagles know their audience. Friday at the first of a two-night stand at a packed United Center, the veterans made no attempt to disguise their old-school methods and untrendy style.

Just days removed from seeing his criminal case against men accused of stealing the band’s lyric sheets dismissed by the court , an unruffled vocalist Don Henley all but explicitly admitted the Eagles are dinosaurs. He highlighted the Eagles’ spartan stage setup, straightforward production and dearth of choreography. Resembling a banker in his vest and button-down shirt, Henley described the collective as “just a bunch of guys with guitars,” before acknowledging it “may be anachronistic, but it works.”

The candid moment revealed a rare self-effacing side of the famously solemn Henley. As the last co-founding member involved with the Eagles, the singer-drummer-guitarist also expressed gratitude for more than five decades of support and instilled the event — part of the band’s farewell tour — with a hint of finality. Cue the standing ovation.

After the brief emotional display, it was back to business. For the Eagles, that meant delivering one instantly recognizable song after another for 120 minutes without added effects or obvious mistakes. Doing so required assigning lead vocals to songs identified with deceased co-founder Glenn Frey to his son, Deacon, and country star Vince Gill, who joined in 2017 and handled every part as if he’d been in the group since day one. And it necessitated a professionalism and seriousness interrupted only by a few scheduled comic-relief spots from singer-guitarist Joe Walsh.

Calculated, and too staid for their own good? Definitely. But the Eagles arrived having put in the hard work, nailing the blended multi-part harmonies crucial to many of the tunes and playing with a technical acumen that valued each note. The quintet operated as the equivalent of a leveling device that finds any imbalances. And the Eagles ensured the crowd could experience it all — the spaciousness, the separation, the small details such as fingers delicately moving on a fretboard or hands gently cradling a shaker — by dialing in a crisp, transparent sound at a venue where acoustics frequently get compromised.

Then there were the songs, textbook examples of country-rock craftsmanship and organic architecture that the Eagles often made appear effortless. The hungover mood of “Tequila Sunrise,” dirt-road escapism of “Already Gone,” funky skedaddle of “Life in the Fast Lane,” melancholic ache of “Desperado.” Songs with identifiable lyrics, easy-going tempos, breezy rise-and-fall vocal patterns and lingering melodies didn’t rouse many in the crowd out of their seats but had them mouthing the words and swaying their heads — just as they would in the car if the Eagles came on the radio.

Never mind that the group’s most recent studio effort (“Long Road Out of Eden,” 2007) stands as the only all-original album the Eagles released since their initial 1980 breakup. Or that the newest song the collective performed on Friday dated to Michael Jordan’s rookie season.

Continuing to inspire strong opinions on both sides of the fence, the Eagles acknowledge what their fans want: nostalgia and classics. Unlike generational peers, they no longer concern themselves with recording half-baked new material in a bid to prove relevance. Credit the Eagles, too, for honesty in branding. Named The Long Goodbye, their current tour plans to stretch through 2025 and seems built to allow for leniency in terms of return visits. This is a band, after all, that realizes the music industry is at heart a business and that people will pay for what they love.

Independent of the fancy awards and commercial achievements that include dibs on two of three biggest-selling albums in American history, the most enduring aspect of the Eagles’ legacy arguably pertains to commerce. The group permanently changed concert economics when in 1994 it became the first artist to charge $100 for a ticket to its reunion tour. (By comparison, the Rolling Stones capped prices at $50. It was a different era.)

Initially derided by experts who believed the amount would lead to backlash and empty seats, the strategy triumphed. Its historical impact continues to resonate. The hefty prices associated with today’s big-name shows — and the escalated importance society places on musicians and their entertainment — connect to that once-controversial decision.

Don Henley, left, and Deacon Frey perform "One of These Nights" with the Eagles at the United Center, March 8, 2024, in Chicago. (John J. Kim/Chicago Tribune)

Fast-forward 30 years, and Henley’s and bassist-vocalist Timothy B. Schmit’s hair is grayer but the songs largely remain the same. Ditto Henley’s voice which, aside from losing a bit of altitude in the higher end and evincing a slight nasal quality, exhibited smoothness, control and depth. The goofy charm and rubber-faced expressions of their other longtime and fellow 76-year-old cohort, Walsh, similarly possessed a familiar ring. Even the four auxiliary support musicians, all in their respective roles since at least 2001, contributed to a consistency and dependability that reign as Eagles trademarks.

Other than Henley threatening to crack a smile more than once, the biggest surprise related to Walsh disclosing he spent part of his early childhood in Evanston. With the Eagles, you know what you’re going to get. Though the conservative approach rubbed up against unspoken rock ‘n’ roll rules and lacked liveliness, it fit the music’s polite character and perfectionist-oriented arrangements. To loosen things, Walsh offered the quirky “Life’s Been Good” and talk box-accompanied “Rocky Mountain Way” from his solo career. Per usual, the  whir and whine of his reedy voice ranked a distant second to his bluesy guitar licks.

The Eagles perform "One of These Nights" at the United Center, March 8, 2024, in Chicago. (John J. Kim/Chicago Tribune)

Deacon Frey stepped into his father’s shoes on the windswept “Take It Easy” and relaxed “Peaceful Easy Feeling.” He sang with sturdiness, clarity  and purpose, but fared better as a harmony vocalist and rhythm guitarist — duties that dissolved the obvious timbral differences between him and his dad. Schmit turned in the evening’s only threadbare lead vocal on the adult-contemporary ballad “I Can’t Tell You Why” whose title ironically served as the answer to the question of how the track entered into the set over superior fare such as “The Long Run,” “Victim of Love” or “Best of My Love.”

Indeed, if the Eagles imparted a lesson for younger generations of bands on Friday, it concerned the importance of elevating songs above personal interests or skills. Granted, Walsh impressed with a fiery guitar solo on an extended reading of “In the City” and Henley kept steady time behind the drum kit while pushing his voice into falsetto regions. Neither called attention to themselves or showed up their mates.

Rather, the group’s successes drew on a collective principle that stressed less “me,” more “us.” Like the Eagles themselves, an analog concept in a digital world.

Eagles book residency at Las Vegas Sphere to extend ‘Long Goodbye’ tour: sources

The Eagles have landed.

The legendary rock band has agreed to a residency at James Dolan’s Las Vegas music venue The Sphere after they finish up what was billed as their final tour this spring, The Post has learned.

Don Henley — the band’s frontman who recently expressed “regret” over a cocaine-fueled night with a 16-year-old prostitute while taking the stand in a criminal case involving the theft of the lyrics to their hit song “Hotel California” — will take the stage along with Joe Walsh and Timothy B. Schmit over 10 weekends from September through December at the $2.3 billion state-of-the-art arena, sources close to the situation told The Post.

The total number of shows and terms of the deal have yet to be disclosed.

“We do not comment on any artists performing at Sphere except for those who have been announced,” a Sphere spokesperson told The Post on Monday.

The Post reached out to the Eagles for comment.

The band concludes its “Long Goodbye” tour on June 15 in the Netherlands.

Dolan, the owner of the Knicks and Rangers, has been courting the Eagles , managed by longtime Dolan pal Irving Azoff, since last year, The Post previously reported.

Azoff co-founded the Oak View Group, which handles marketing partnerships for The Sphere, and also manages Dead & Company’s John Mayer, the Eagles and U2, which all have been booked to play the glitzy venue.

Mayer and the Grateful Dead spinoff band were scheduled to play 24 shows from May to July but have extended their stay by another 10 dates through the end of August, sources said.

However, Dolan’s efforts to bring Beyonce to the LED-wrapped arena have apparently hit a snag — at least for this year.

The two have held talks since last November, with Queen Bey, her husband, Jay-Z, and her manager-mom, Tina Knowles, all touring the site, as The Post previously reported .

Buzz about a possible deal surged last month when the “Single Ladies” singer was featured in a Super Bowl ad for Verizon — showing Beyonce on a horse that was perched atop The Sphere.

The hang-up for a deal could be over Dolan’s hesitancy to splash out the millions needed to attract Beyonce and produce the high-tech shows that fit The Sphere, once source speculated.

The media mogul paid roughly $10 million to U2 for their extravagant production to open the arena last September. Bono and the band closed the last of their 40 shows earlier this month.

Shares in the Dolan-run parent company that owns The Sphere are up more than 40% year to date. They were down slightly on Monday, trading at around $47.

Henley, meanwhile, had taken a break from the Eagles tour earlier this month to testify in a Manhattan court in a trial involving three men accused of a scheme involving the allegedly stolen “Hotel California” lyrics.

The case” imploded mid-trial after  Henley  disclosed new evidence that cast doubt on the prosecution.

In a stunning turn of events, Justice Curtis Farber dropped the charges faced by rare-books dealer Glenn Horowitz, ex-Rock & Roll Hall of Fame curator Craig Inciardi and memorabilia seller Edward Kosinki — finding that Henley “manipulated” Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s office by failing to turn over 6,000 pages of key evidence until midway through the trial.

Henley and his lawyers tried to weaponize their attorney-client privilege to “hide information that they believed would be damaging,” Farber said at a hearing in Manhattan Supreme Court on March 6.

Eagles co-founder Don Henley on Monday candidly recounted the cocaine-fueled night when he was busted with a 16-year-old prostitute at his Los Angeles home — calling it a “regret” he still lives with more than four decades later as he took the stand in Manhattan court.

While taking the stand, the 76-year-old Henley was asked about his 1980 arrest shortly after the band broke up.

Henley admitted the breakup made him depressed, prompting him to call a “madam” to provide him with “some company.”

Among those was an underage prostitute who suffered a seizure after a night of coke-fueled commiserating , he admitted.

“I wanted to forget about everything that was happening with the band,” Henley said. “I made a poor decision which I regret to this day. I’ve had to live with it for 44 years. I’m still living with it today in this courtroom.”

One more for the road: Eagles’ Long Goodbye farewell tour hits Toronto

eagles rock band tour

The Eagles perform in Denver, Colo., in 2023. Handout

It was 11 p.m. and the last of four encore songs by the Eagles was still resonating in Toronto’s Scotiabank Arena. The long-running band left the stage with goodbye waves as fans quickly headed to the exits. Some people like to stay out late, some folks can’t hold out that long and some need to make the commuter train home to the suburbs on a Wednesday night.

The song was Heartache Tonight , about risks, romance and inevitabilities: “Somebody’s gonna hurt someone before the night is through.” The country-flavoured Rock & Roll Hall of Famers who began as Linda Ronstadt’s backing group and who released their self-titled debut album in 1972 are saying their “Long Goodbye,” a tour billed as the final one. It began in 2023 and it is likely to extend into 2025.

“We don’t know how long it’s going to be,” Don Henley admitted on stage.

Henley, the sandy-voiced, stern-faced soul singer and drummer, is the last remaining original member of the band. Two others (Randy Meisner, Glenn Frey) are dead; Bernie Leadon left early on. Long-timers Joe Walsh (guitar) and Timothy B. Schmit (bass) are still Eagles. Country artist Vince Gill and Frey’s son Deacon Frey have replaced the latter’s father.

“There’s been some changes in the band,” Henley said, “but the music remains the same.”

Almost exactly same. The Eagles aim to recreate their sonically smooth FM radio fare in person. Hit after hit was paraded, with high harmonies so tight and pristine as to recall an old advertisement from an analogue era: Is it live, or is it Memorex?

The set list reflected The Long Run band’s preoccupation with the road, starting with the bluegrassed Seven Bridges Road , presented with six musicians lined across the front of the stage. A united front, then, from a notoriously fractious – five Eagles and five limousines, back in the day – flock.

The road songs included the summer-breezin’ Take it Easy (”Don’t let the sound of your own wheels drive you crazy”) the lighter-weight Take It to the Limit (”Put me on a highway, show me a sign”) and the drama of Hotel California (”On a dark desert highway”). The main-set finale, Life in the Fast Lane , is not a road song but a metaphor and cautionary tale.

Glenn Frey, who died in 2016 at age 67, once described the Eagles as rock music’s Camaro, to his mind the top automobile of the 1970s and ‘80s. “And we always tried to improve the basic design,” he said.

The Eagles strove for perfection, as did their Southern California cohorts Steely Dan, who, on their 1976 song Everything You Did , sang “Turn up the Eagles, the neighbours are listening.” In response, the Eagles included the line “They stab it with their steely knives, but they just can’t kill the beast” on 1977′s Hotel California .

If he was listening, Steely Dan’s lone remaining co-founder Donald Fagen would have heard that classic song and that line night after night on the current tour, as the group is the Eagles opening act. Hours before the Toronto show, however, the venue announced on social media that Steely Dan would not be performing “due to personal reasons within the band.”

Canadian rocker Tom Cochrane, who subbed in on short notice for Steely Dan, told the audience that his heart went out to Fagen and his family. Promoter Live Nation did not provide any further details. Fagen, 76, was hospitalized last fall because of an undisclosed illness, causing Steely Dan to miss multiple tour shows.

Some Steely Dan fans were crushed by the news that the group would not perform. One of them said on the social media platform X that they had travelled from the east coast just to see them. Another, Toronto’s Quinn Henderson, told The Globe and Mail he was “kind of bummed.”

No refunds as a result of the lineup change were offered.

“It’s really unfortunate,” David Marskell, CEO of TheMuseum in Kitchener, Ont., said before the concert. “The Eagles are great, but I was totally going to see Steely Dan. They’ve always been my favourite band.”

Eagles’ fans got their money’s worth, particularly when singer/guitarist/ loveable goofball Walsh took over. A full-blown rock concert erupted amidst the otherwise more laid-back affair when he presented his riff-heavy James Gang classic Funk #49. He encouraged audience participation during Life’s Been Good , a charismatic advertisement for an enviable lifestyle: “I live in hotels, tear out the walls; I have accountants pay for it all.”

Walsh’s Rocky Mountain Way was followed by the Eagles’ sombre Desperado , the evening’s penultimate number, sung by Henley. The ballad suggests rock ‘n’ rollers as renegades. “I feel like I’m breaking a law all the time,” co-writer Frey once explained. “What we live and what we do is kind of a fantasy.”

Their fantasy is our escapism. Henley told the crowd as much: “Our mission is to give you a two-hour vacation from all the madness and chaos in the world.” Concert tickets aren’t cheap, but neither is a rock star’s lifestyle. The bargain is fair. Thanks for the ride, Eagles.

Famed US rock band landing at the Sphere this fall, report says

The band is set to play several weekends at the Sphere this fall.

John Katsilometes

That peaceful, easy feeling is word of the Eagles playing the Sphere this year.

A published report and word from within the entertainment industry is the legendary American rock band will play the venue for 10 weekends between September and December. The New York post published the plans as a rumor Monday, citing industry sources.

Over the weekend, sources with knowledge of the band and venue indicate both sides have landed on that plan. The dates are not yet official, however. A band rep refused to confirm the reports Saturday and again Monday night.

A Sphere rep sent a statement Tuesday: “We do not comment on any artists performing at Sphere except those who have been announced.”

The Eagles have for months been at the center of reports they would headline the Sphere. Their latest and (as billed) final tour, “The Long Goodbye” runs through June 15. The band formed in L.A. in 1971 most recently played Las Vegas at MGM Grand Garden in May 2022.

Phish is next to play the Sphere , for four dates April 18-21. Dead and Company plays 18 dates from May 16-June 22. Beyoncé has also been reportedly in talks to play the venue, the timeline for her possible residency vacillating between later this year and 2025.
