How Wynonna Judd’s ‘Judds Final Tour’ Resulted in a Celebratory, All-Star Concert Special… and a Doc That Deals With Grief

Filmmakers behind Paramount+'s 'Between Hell and Hallelujah' and CMT's 'Love Is Alive — The Final Concert' tell how two specials came out of a tour that had Wynonna joined by Brandi Carlile, Kelsea Ballerini, Ashley McBryde, Little Big Town and Martina McBride

judds Wynonna Judd, Brandi Carlile, Little Big Town, Kelsea Ballerini, Martina McBride, Ashley McBryde, performers on Wynonna Judd concert special

With the on-air premieres of the doc and concert special being spaced a few days apart, Judds fans don’t have to consume them both in one fell swoop, but the biggest devotees of the history-making mother/daughter duo may well make a “Girls Night Out” binge out of the two programs anyway.

No one will be punished for picking their own viewing order, but CMT’s Margaret Comeaux, one of the executive producers of the concert film, suggests starting with the doc and saving the live show for dessert. “I think that’s probably the preferred order,” Comeaux says, “because I think the story that the doc is telling of the whole year leads us to the final story we’re telling in the concert special, with the culmination in Murfreesboro.” That’s the Tennessee city where Judd and all the guest stars who appeared along last fall’s tour routing converged for a show that was meant to more or less recreate the Judds’ famous original farewell concert back in 1991, shot on the same stage.

Both projects will prove enticing not just to fans of the Judds but to followers of the performers who are seen joining Wynonna as co-frontwomen: Brandi Carlile , Kelsea Ballerini, Martina McBride, Ashley McBryde, Faith Hill and Little Big Town. (Make that co-frontwomen and -frontmen in the case of the latter co-ed vocal quartet.)

Says Jason Owen , the head of Nashville media powerhouse Sandbox Entertainment and an exec producer on both projects: “I’m being honest when I say I could not have done this tour without her. I mean, she was a confidante. She and I talked through a lot as we were talking through songs and making sure everyone was healthy and happy. And her energy is just infectious. From the very beginning, she felt very strongly that Wynonna should do the tour, and she was very vocal about that with all of us. And we all started building this idea of the tour with a guest (each night) off of Brandi, and that’s how it started. But throughout the process, she was there. It was very important for me that she be the first guest — and it was very important to me — because I knew that she cared so much about the music and cared so much about Wynonna. Not that all of them did not, because they did, but she was like a beacon, and wanted to make sure everything was really right and perfect for Wy, mostly musically.”

Even before Naomi died and plans changed in the biggest possible way, there had always been a plan to film a documentary about what had been booked as the Judds’ second farewell tour. Owens’ Sandbox had hooked up with Reese Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine — specifically Sara Rea, who runs the unscripted division — at about the time the Judds appeared on the 2022 CMT Music Awards to sing “Love Will Build a Bridge” and promote the coming reunion tour.

After Naomi died, virtually everything that had been planned went on — including the filming projects — albeit always with a check-in to Wynonna and her team to make sure they were on board, and with obvious constant acknowledgements of the void at the center of things, or at a half-center. Unforgettably, Wynonna showed up to accept the duo’s Country Music Hall of Fame medallion at a ceremony just two days after the death. At a musical memorial televised by CMT from the Ryman Auditorium, Wynonna announced the tour would go on, with Carlile — a key duet partner at the eulogistic event — seen in the third row literally leaning forward in her seat with enthusiasm for the idea.

Probably the most talked-about scene comes mid-tour, when deepening anxiety about staging issues leads Wynonna to get on an emergency Zoom call with her therapist to deal with the real underlying issues. She says that every time she drives by her mother’s house, which is often, she flashes back to the day she was called over, and the traumatic imagery of being in the room with her dying mom. Her biggest regret, she says feistily, is that she didn’t punch the cop who held her back from kissing her mother before she passed, and that it was only after Naomi was declared dead that she was able to kiss her on the forehead.

“That was a hard day of filming,” says Patty Ivins Specht, the director of the “Between Hell and Hallelujah” doc. “It was a fascinating day, because that (therapy session) was not scheduled. She woke up that day and sincerely needed to have a session with David Kessler for her grief therapy because she was just feeling it so deeply. First of all, the entire crew is crying on some level, because it’s very emotional to listen to somebody relive their worst day of their life. And then it was another moment where she went into that very personal trauma of replaying the driving over (to the house), every time. She’s like, ‘I just can’t stop that loop in my brain.’ Sometimes when you’re making a movie like this, it is such a trust fall, and Wy just trusted that we were gonna capture the process and was free with how she felt, and I think everyone in the room filming it feels that responsibility when someone trusts you with their vulnerability.

“I look at that scene and she’s a woman who’s legitimately in a painful hour in time and she’s asking for help. And she’s kind of trying to ignore that these cameras are here. But watching somebody model processing their grief is also really empowering, because in our society, we don’t talk about death. You do the funeral, you move along, and then you still live with that grief for years. And so I think in a powerful way, her modeling how she’s processing this grief is really one of the gifts of this film.”

The anxiety for Judd comes about in a somewhat symbolic way, at first, starting with the very practical matter of the artist having difficulty with the opening gambit of the tour. She would be snuck out each night in a rolling equipment cabinet to start each concert on a “B stage,” apart from the band or any guests back on the main stage — and, in some kind of deeply Freudian way, separated from the union with her mother that the main stage represents. It doesn’t help that Judd is described by others as being more claustrophobic than anyone else they know even on an elevator.

As for capturing Wynonna’s first visit to her mother’s home after the tragedy, says Ivins Specht, “It illustrates this thing that happens with Wynonna, where I think she has this kind of unspoken contract with her fans that she just gives it up. Because even when she said yes to us, that we could go with her that day, I mean, we weren’t so sure she’d say yes, but no, she was all for it. … The sensitive thing is, leading with your intuition a little bit in those times, but really our job is to always ask. That actually is our job, to ask — in humility and kindness — to ask the uncomfortable questions all the time. There’s so much give and take, and she gives so much. There’s a moment (in the film) where she goes, ‘OK, I think I did it.’ Like, ‘That’s all I can do today.’ But she generally tries to say yes, and then she’ll find a boundary at some point.”

One reason Owen bonded so well with Carlile is that he, too, was a Judds megafan since childhood. He will allow that a VHS tape of the 1991 Judds farewell special was one of his most prized, if not worn-out, possessions. (Naomi Judd said that she was retiring at the time, after their run of ’80s smashes, because of her hepatitis-C diagnosis, although she participated in short or one-off reunions over the following three decades.) That farewell show had been filmed at Middle Tennessee State University, and it was Owen’s idea to recreate the show back at that original site — though it was not the original plan.

“I remember Margaret and I having a phone conversation as we were trying to plan this concert special,” Owen recalls, “and the original plan was that we were going to do it in Lexington, Kentucky,” where the last show was to take place on the original fall 2022 tour routing. “Kentucky made sense because they were obviously from Kentucky, and that was where we were going to wrap the tour. We had blocked off seating for it, we had done camera holds, we did everything. Long story short, Wynonna wanted to continue the tour and continue to do another run of dates,” which would extend the actual finale to months down the line. “And then, with Margaret and I brainstorming on the phone, I said, ‘What if we do it there, at MTSU?’ Within eight hours, we had that.. … At the college, there was tons of faculty and people that worked there for a long period of time that were all there when they shot that special, believe it or not. And when we pitched them on this idea, they went through every hoop imaginable to make sure it happened.

It wasn’t just Carlile among the guests who was able to have an emotional impact on Judd. Comeaux remembers a spontaneous moment in rehearsal, captured in the doc, when Faith Hill began serenading Judd on stage with an a cappella version of “You Are Not Alone,” with the band eventually joining in. The documentary crew was on the opposite side of the venue, filming an interview with Tim McGraw, but they had made contingency plans to leave one camera near the star at all times, and a producer was able to pick it up and capture the moment. “Wy, at the beginning of every show, is very much in a zone of ‘I want to service all the fans who are coming,’ and as anyone is, you’re in game mode — you’ve gotta see the vision of the end. And so when Faith begins this beautiful rendition, I mean, everybody on stage had a lump in their throat, and Wynonna pulls out a funny and says, ‘Don’t you ever do that again.’ But it’s a beautiful moment in the movie.”

But it’s hard to overstate Carlile’s impact, even on the tour dates that came after her initial appearance at the first ones. Says Ivins Specht, “At the kickoff concert, it was one day of load-in, a little bit of rehearsal that late afternoon into the evening, and then the next day was another rehearsal, and then the first show was that Friday night. So it’s Thursday, 4 or 5 o’clock, and it’s a big freaking day — stressful, everything’s getting built, and things aren’t coming together as quickly as possible, as with every production you ever work on.” Owen concurs, “That first weekend of shows was very stressful. Things go wrong. We have to change things; I’m yelling at some lighting guy. It’s tough.”

And then, says the director, “I can tell you, the moment Team Brandi rolled in, Wy was like, ‘OK, I’m gonna be good.’ Like, ‘I have Brandi on stage. She’s as invested in this being a success for me, as an individual woman, as she is for all the fans who love the Judds so much.’ And I think the planning of Brandi being first is kind of an unspoken tribute to why this is such a success. It transcended being about all the anxiety around what Wynonna was about to do, and it went back to the place of celebration and joy, and Brandi helped Wy access that peace in herself. That’s what I witnessed.” Adds Owen, “She helped me too, honestly, because I was very emotional through it, because I cared so much and it was such a rollercoaster of a year. Again, I really would say wholeheartedly, I could not have done this without her.”

“I have a petition to get her to the Greek” in Los Angeles, says Comeaux. “I want to see Wynonna at the Greek.”

Maybe that will happen eventually, but not under this banner. “There’s nothing (further) scheduled for that,” Owen says. “I think that that was the end of the Judds tour. Unfortunately for all of us.”

Wynonna Judd has kept her promise to her fans.

On Sept. 30, she kicked off the final tour of The Judds just a few months after mother Naomi Judd died by suicide on April 30.

On Friday, the 11-city tour started at the Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and in a clip that a fan shared on social media, Judd appears to get emotional onstage as she sings alongside Brandi Carlile.

"I'm speechless, actually," Judd said in the clip, which was shared by Twitter user Lynne J. Johnson's Twitter account.

"Thank you for coming to my party," Judd added.

Another fan who shared a video of the concert wrote "Such an amazing night!! I hope everyone is reminded of how amazing The Judds legacy was and also how amazing Wynonna Judd is!! @Wynonna She is a force of nature with a voice to move mountains!!"

Before she was set to take the stage, Judd shared a clip on Instagram of what fans could expect to see during the show.

"Just a little sneak peek," she captioned the clip, which family photos of herself and her mother.

Judd also shared how she was preparing for her performance by posting a photo of 19 cans of glitter spray on her Instagram Stories with the caption "Can't ever have enough sparkles!"

In a separate story, she shared a picture of a few tour buses sitting outside of the venue.

The tour is scheduled to perform at 10 more cities, including Toledo, Ohio, on Oct. 1, with a final stop scheduled for Oct. 29 in Lexington, Kentucky.

In addition to Carlile, more stars are expected to take the stage , including Faith Hill, Little Big Town, Martina McBride, Ashley McBryde and Trisha Yearwood.

In May 2022, during a celebration of her mother's life and music career, Judd confirmed that the tour would go on after Naomi Judd's death.

“So, I made a decision and I thought I’d share it on national television. That after a lot of thought, I’m going to have to honor her and do this tour. I’m just going to have to,” she said, to claps and cheers from the audience. “Because that’s what you would want, and Bono once told me give them what they want, not what you want.”

“I didn’t know if I could go on without her,” Judd continued. “Oh, God. Life is so strange. It’s so devastatingly beautiful what happened here tonight, so we will continue this spectacle. That’s what she would want, right?”

Wynonna and Naomi Judd brought a fresh acoustic sound to country music, with unmistakable harmonies surrounding Wynonna’s powerful lead vocals. The Judds are often celebrated for a rarely-interrupted stretch of 14 No. 1 hits when every single of theirs released by RCA landed in the Billboard Top 10; and a career that defined what it means to be individualists in the music business. The Judds dominated touring in the 80s with 20 Top 10 hits, have sold more than 20 million albums and blazed a trail for duos and women who have followed them. Together, The Judds have 16 Gold, Platinum, and multi-Platinum albums and longform videos, led by 2x Platinum albums Why Not Me and The Judds Greatest Hits. Their stripped-back style revived the popularity of acoustic sounds in country music and opened up the genre for more traditional approaches.

Wynonna Judd Honors Late Naomi Judd’s Legacy in First Show of The Judds’ Final Tour [Watch]

Wynonna Judd took the stage for the opening night of the Judds ' Final Tour on Friday night, and she paid touching tribute to the life and legacy of her late mother, Naomi Judd , in a series of powerful moments.

Naomi Judd died on April 30, and her daughters issued a statement attributing her death to her long struggle with mental illness. Ashley Judd later revealed that the  cause of her death  was a self-inflicted firearm wound.

During a  private memorial service  in Nashville on May 7, Wynonna Judd announced that she intended to honor the duo's Final Tour dates, which they had announced in early April. The tour opened with a show at Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids, Mich., on Friday night, with Martina McBride and Brandi Carlile both on the bill, and the Judds' Twitter account posted a video beforehand to share a glimpse of the stage, which features a slideshow of moments from across the Judds' career:

Fans also shared some video clips of the concert on social media, including the powerful finale, during which Wynonna belted out a gospel version of "Love Can Build a Bridge" in front of a video screen that showed old footage of her and her mother on stage together.

The song ends with a clip of Naomi addressing her daughter, ending with her saying, "I believe there is always hope."

"Thank you, Mama, for writing this song," Judd says as the song closes. "I'll continue to sing it for all the days of my life."

Faith Hill ,  Little Big Town ,  Ashley McBryde ,  Kelsea Ballerini  and  Trisha Yearwood  will also participate in various dates of the tour, which runs through Oct. 29 before wrapping with a show at Rupp Arena in Lexington, Ky. Faith Hill will help Yearwood close out the tour, and McBride is set to open all of the shows.

Wynonna Judd Announces Special Guests For 2023 The Judds: The Final Tour

by Alex Hopper December 19, 2022, 10:52 am

After announcing an extension to The Judds: The Final Tour, Wynonna Judd has shared the line-up of fellow country icons slated to join the celebration in 2023.

Videos by American Songwriter

Names on the star-studded line-up include Ashley McBryde, Brandi Carlile, Kelsea Ballerini, Little Big Town and Tanya Tucker. Martina McBride is set to continue her run as a special guest on all upcoming tour dates.

“What I can think of to say is that I am looking so forward to being out on the road again, and that I am absolutely thrilled to have my friends joining me for this next tour,” said Wynonna in a statement. “I’m so grateful to the fans that they want more and I’m anxious to be with everybody again.”

Wynonna started the tour in honor of her late mother, Naomi, earlier this year. After an overwhelming demand from fans, she decided to add 15 more dates to the run.

“I have never felt so overwhelmed by this much love and support!” Wynonna said at the time. “The emotions that flow while listening to the different generations of fans sing back to me each night has been other-worldly. I am so humbled by every artist that has come to sing with me on this tour. They’ve all managed to bring something so unique to The Judds music and I can say that no two shows are the same.”

She continued, “It has been so life-giving! The decision to add 15 more shows was a no-brainer for me. The fans have been such a gift during my time of grieving and honoring my mother in song. What an amazing season this is. I look so forward to continuing the celebration of the music that has changed my life forever.”

2024 Players Championship leaderboard: Scottie Scheffler becomes first back-to-back winner at TPC Sawgrass

Scheffler defended his title and won across consecutive weeks with the lowest final round in course history.

The 50th edition of the Players Championship saw a tournament first as Scottie Scheffler claimed the PGA Tour's flagship event for the second straight season. It was a one-stroke victory for Scheffler, whose 20 under score bested 54-hole leader Xander Schauffele, 36-hole leader Wyndham Clark and Brian Harman.

The world No. 1 became the first player to successfully defend his Players Championship title, and he needed to come from five back on Sunday to do it. He tied the largest 54-hole deficit overcome en route to winning, and Scheffler's 64 on Sunday tied the lowest final-round score from a Players Championship winner (Davis Love III, Fred Couples, Jack Nicklaus).

Prior to Scheffler's successful defense, the best finish by the defending champion was T5, most recently accomplished by Hal Sutton in 2001.

Scheffler is also the first player since Tiger Woods in 2001 to win The Players Championship a week after winning emerging victorious on the PGA Tour, according to Justin Ray . He is also the fourth to win at Bay Hill and TPC Sawgrass in the same season, joining Tom Kite (1989), Woods (2001, 2013) and Jason Day (2016).

The most predictable man in golf experienced one of the most unpredictable tournaments of his career. Dealing with a neck injury that started ailing him during the second round, Scheffler did well just to enter the final round within arm's reach of Schauffele.

"I was hoping to be in this position," said Scheffler. "Yesterday -- I put up a good fight for four days. That's really all there was. Teddy [Scott] kept me in a good head space out there. We had a great finish yesterday, and then got off to a slow start today, but then the hole-out on 4 kind of propelled us a little bit, and hit a lot of good shots today, did a lot of good things this week."

Making three straight pars out the gate, the reigning PGA Tour Player of the Year jump started his round with a hole-out from 82 yards on the par-4 4th for an eagle. He added a birdie on his next hole before nice conversions from outside 10 feet on Nos. 8-9 to turn in 5-under 31, pulling even with Schauffele and Clark.

Back-to-back tap-in birdies on Nos. 11-12 saw Scheffler tie Schauffele once again at 19 under. He appeared keen on keeping the birdie train rolling when he threw his tee shot on the par-3 14 to 4 feet, but Scheffler was unable to convert.

Coolly navigating the difficult 14th and 15th, Scheffler added his eighth birdie of the round on the par-5 16th to grab the lead all to himself. He secured par on the 17th and had eyes on one more birdie on the closing hole after finding the fairway.

Scheffler's approach took an odd hop and settled 16 feet away. One last birdie conversion would have all but clinched the trophy, but when his putt slipped by, the door remained open for the chasing pack as he posted 20 under.

Harman made his move with a birdie on No. 15 to get within one, but a wayward drive on No. 16 handcuffed the Champion Golfer of the Year on the easiest hole on the back nine. He arrived at the 18th needing birdie to tie the clubhouse lead, but Harman failed to convert from 17 feet and join Scheffler at 20 under.

Only two men remained with a chance to track down the game's top player. Both Schauffele and Clark made it difficult on themselves with dropped shots on No. 14. Schauffele added another bogey on No. 15 to fall two off Scheffler's pace but quickly rebounded with a birdie on No. 16.

Clark joined Schauffele with a birdie on the 16th and stepped to the 17th one day removed from his chunked wedge shot that found a watery grave. The U.S. Open champion more than made amends when his tee shot settled 4 feet from the traditional Sunday pin location to set up his second straight birdie to get within one of Scheffler.

Schauffele's tee shot settled just outside Clark's ball, but unlike his playing partner, Schauffele was unable to make his birdie putt. The two came to the par-4 finisher both needing birdie to tie Scheffler. Schauffele did not give himself a good look while Clark faced the same 17-footer Harman missed just prior.

Clark's putt came as close as it could come without dropping. Horeshoeing hard around the hole and out, the birdie bid fell by the wayside and gave Scheffler another slice of history at The Players Championship.

2024 Players Championship leaderboard

T2. Wyndham Clark, Xander Schauffele, Brian Harman (-19): All three visited the 72nd hole with a chance to win this championship, and all three failed to make birdie. Harman saw his 17-foot bid never threaten, and Schauffele failed to give himself a realistic chance after hitting his tee shot in the pine straw. That left just Clark for Scheffler to dodge, and the U.S. Open champion did just about everything but make his.

How each player got to this position was quite different. Harman hovered and hovered and hovered before making a birdie on No. 15 to get within one. The Champion Golfer of the Year won't kick himself for not making birdie on the 17th or even 18th for that matter, but for letting the par-5 16th go by without adding another. Meanwhile, Schauffele was in full control of this tournament until the final five holes.

The 54-hole leader arrived to the par-4 14th with the lead and walked off one behind as Scheffler made a birdie ahead and Schauffele dropped a shot. He made another bogey on No. 15, missed a convertible 7-foot birdie putt on No. 17 and has to be walking away thinking he let this one through his grasp.

Clark battled his swing over the weekend and was as many as three down late in his back nine, but he hung tough. He failed to convert an 11-foot eagle chance on 16 before rectifying Saturday's mistake on 17 with a birdie from 4 feet. His birdie putt on 18 to force a playoff will be played for weeks to come as it may be one of the most brutal lip outs in recent memory.

5. Matt Fitzpatrick (-16): The Englishman raced through the finish line with four straight birdies, but it was too little too late. Fitzpatrick struggled for the majority of the day carding four bogeys from Nos. 4-13 to play himself out of contention. The devilish par-4 4th which yielded birdies all week (and which Scheffler eagled Sunday) was a thorn in his side as he played that hole 5 over on the week while someone like Scheffler played it in a 3-under fashion.

T6. Hideki Matsuyama, Si Woo Kim (-15): Matsuyama was so solid despite some injury concern coming into the week. Less than confident that he was 100% healthy, the man from Japan posted rounds of 69-69-68-67 for another quality result at the Players Championship and his third top 10 since 2019.

8. Ludvig Aberg (-14): Talk about a tournament debut. The young Swede continues to show that when the lights are the brightest his game may be at its best. Aberg came home with a bogey-free 67 on Sunday to climb inside the top 10 and collect his fifth straight top-25 finish.

Scheffler dodging bullets

Xander Schauffele misses from 7 feet and needs birdie on the last to tie Scottie Scheffler. Wyndham Clark converts his and will need the same on 18. Up ahead, Brian Harman is on the green on 18 and will need to make a 17-footer to tie Scheffler. This is amazing stuff.

Xander and Clark both tight on 17

Wow, wow, wow!!!! Xander Schauffele will have 7 feet to tie Scottie Scheffler at 20 under. Wyndham Clark will have 4 feet to get within one. Their tee shots on the par-3 17th are the two closest we have seen almost all day. Talk about gumption.

We have a development on 16!

Xander Schauffele will have 25 feet for eagle on 16 to get back to 20 under where Scottie Scheffler has ended his tournament. Wyndham Clark will have 11 feet for an eagle of his own to get to 19 under and in with a chance to chase down the clubhouse lead.

Xander drops another

It looks like Brian Harman (-19) has emerged as Scottie Scheffler's biggest threat as Xander Schauffele just made another bogey. Schauffele is two behind with three to play. Scheffler could slam the door shut with one last birdie as he faces 16 feet on the 72nd hole to get to 21 under.

If you played all eight rounds at Bay Hill and TPC Sawgrass and played both courses to field average, you would be about -2 at the end of the two weeks. Scottie is 35 under.

Xander makes bogey on 14

Xander's second bogey of the day comes at an inopportune time as he fails to get up and down on No. 14. He now is one behind Scottie Scheffler who is on the green on 17 but faces a very difficult two putt from just about 50 feet to stay at 20 under. While all this is happening, Brian Harman makes birdie on 15 to get within one. He will have a great chance to get to 20 under with another birdie on 16.

Scheffler gets to 20 under

A tap-in birdie for the world no. 1 on 16 has gotten him to 20 under with two to play. Scottie Scheffler now heads to the most difficult hole and the most nerve racking, the par-3 17th. He is 8 under on his round and hopes to post a number for Xander Schauffele to look at as he will need to get up-and-down to remain at 20 under back on 14.

A look at the closing stretch

Xander Schauffele has entered the most difficult part of the golf course where four of the last five holes are playing over par. The par-3 17th is currently playing to an average of 3.40 (the most difficult of the day) and may set up a championship moment shortly. Xander leads by one at 20 under but just missed the fairway on 14 while Scheffler is in a small greenside bunker in two on the par-5 16th.

Xander goes one clear

This guy's short game, I mean what else is there to say at this point. Xander makes birdie from over the green on the par-4 12th to get to 20 under and one clear of Scottie Scheffler who is in the fairway on No. 15. Schauffele is now 25 for 31 scrambling this week. He is two clear of Clark and Harman.

Four horse race

Data Golf doesn't give anyone outside the current top four much of a chance of winning (all less than 1%). So it's likely down to Scheffler (-19), Schauffele (-19), Clark (-18) and Harman (-18).

Cruel lip-out leaves Clark one short of PLAYERS playoff

The Players Championship

Players Championship

Players Championship: One reason why every contender at TPC Sawgrass will win, and one reason they won't

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2024/players-2024-contenders-collage.jpeg

The shots were so good on Saturday, the drama so compelling and the late-afternoon light so perfect on TPC Sawgrass' hearty closing stretch, it’s a shame they weren’t playing the final round of the 50th Players Championship.

Xander Schauffele was five strokes back of Wyndham Clark after the first hole of the third round, only to grind his behind off—and go bogey-free in shooting a seven-under-par 65. That gives the World No. 6 a one-shot lead over Clark, the World No. 5 who slightly wobbled to a two-under 70 but saved his round and maybe his tournament with a gritty bogey at 17 after his horribly chunked tee ball ended up 20 yards short in the water.

MORE: Xander Schauffele's torrid Saturday possibly sets up his biggest win

The beauty of how the final round sets up is that there are eight players six shots or closer to the lead, and that number is important, because the largest Players deficit ever overcome was the six shots by Raymond Floyd in his 1981 playoff win that ended on a Monday.

The chasing group behind Schauffele at 17 under includes major winners from the past two years—Clark, Brian Harman (who charged Saturday with a 64), Matt Fitzpatrick (68) and the injured but resilient Scottie Scheffler (68).

We can probably all agree: This is the leaderboard we’ve been starving for in the PGA Tour’s signature events this season.

Here is a look at the contenders, with thoughts on while they will win, and why they won’t.

Xander Schauffele (17 under)

Why he’ll win: No one is more due to climb another important rung on the career ladder than the X-man, whose two gaps in an otherwise stellar résumé are a Players title and triumph in a major after some achingly close calls. This feels like a prime opportunity to prove he can close the deal.

Why he won’t win: See above. There’s probably not a guy who’ll feel more pressure standing on the first tee on Sunday morning. The stakes seem inordinately high.

More From Golf Digest

the judds final tour youtube

Wyndham Clark (16 under)

Why he’ll win: Far less seasoned on the big stage than Schauffele, Clark seized his first major in last year’s U.S. Open and has been on something of a roll since; he has two wins and a runner-up this season in signature events. He knows he can beat anybody out there.

Why he won’t win: That horrible chunk Clark hit at 17 on Saturday—that was pure nerves taking over, which means he’s not immune to anxiety in the big arena. The putting has been scary strong (Clark leads the field in that department), but it’s tough to stay hot for four rounds.

Brian Harman (15 under)

Why he will win: Another guy whose self-belief has gone to another level after his own major victory in last summer’s Open Championship. After a nine-birdie 64 on Saturday, the avid hunter has to love his stalking position, and no one in the field has hit more greens in regulation.

2089548405

David Cannon

Why he won’t win: Harman hasn’t been great in final rounds this year; he ranks 84th with a 69.60 scoring average. At two shots back, he’ll have to close with something better than that.

Matt Fitzpatrick (13 under)

Why he will win: The 2022 U.S. Open champ produced the week’s most amazing revelation about playing a year with an extra weight in his driver. The story is made all the better in that Fitzpatrick is leading the field in SG/off the tee this week and is No. 2 in driving distance. That’s a strong combo around all that water at TPC Sawgrass.

Why he won’t win: Despite the strong driving, Fitzpatrick has hit only 66 percent of the greens, so he’s playing with fire with all of the trouble Sawgrass offers.

Maverick McNealy (13 under)

Why he will win: This has been a season of underdog winners, and the Stanford grad fits that mold, with no victories yet in 121 PGA Tour starts.

Why he won’t win: He’s surrounded by too many guys who already know how to get it done.

the judds final tour youtube

Sahith Theegala (12 under)

Why he will win: The results are building and popularity growing for the former top college player at Pepperdine. Theegala had his maiden tour victory in 2023 and already has three top-10s this season. He’s on the cusp of something great.

Why he won’t win: The short game would have to be better. Though No. 2 in SG/putting, Theegala is only 61 percent at scrambling and 40 percent in sand saves.

Scottie Scheffler (12 under)

Why he will win: Because he’s No. 1 in the world for reason, and he’s showing remarkable grit in playing through a neck injury first suffered on Friday. Early Saturday, it looked like Scheffler might not be able to finish a round and he ended up shooting 68.

2089511413

Sam Greenwood

Why he won’t win: The pain in his neck is a pain to his game, and he just can’t overcome it.

Nate Lashley (11 under)

Why he will win: The 41-year-old qualifies as the hungriest contender, with one tour win (2019 Rocket Mortgage) in 148 starts. And Lashley has to feel good about his birdie-birdie-birdie finish on Saturday.

Why he won’t win: Only one golfer has overcome a six-shot hole at the Players, and there are too many younger studs to climb past.
