E xactly 53 years after the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant, as it was called, was inaugurated on April 17, 1970, India’s second-largest steel-making public sector unit (PSU) is resisting its transition into private hands. While Andhra Pradesh and its people are fighting to save the country’s shore-based integrated steel plant run by the Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited (RINL), the ruling Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) in Telangana, too, has expressed sympathy for the anti-privatisation sentiment. Andhra Pradesh, however, does not want its neighbour’s support, which is being seen as an attempt to ‘secure the entity’ through investment by the Singareni Collieries Corporation Limited (SCCL), in which the Telangana government holds a 51 per cent stake. However, while the SCCL has deputed a team to take stock on the ground, it was not among the 22 bidders that submitted Expressions of Interest (EoI) before the April 15 deadline, which was later extended to April 20 to broadbase the bidding process.

Vizag Steel Museum

          Museums occupy a special place in my heart and it is evident from my blog where I try pointing about them however small they may be. As I have listed all the museums that are there in Vizag as of now (except TU 142 Museum). I’m now focusing on the museums that are present in the institutions. The tiny museum of CMFRI and CIFT is the first in line and now this post is about the steel museum that is located in the Vizag Steel Plant. In the near future I will try writing about the museums present in Andhra University, Andhra Medical College and few other institutions. I visited Vizag steel plant three times and the last visit was almost a decade back. Visiting the steel plant township is like visiting some beautiful town.

        I came to know about this institutional museum when I was browsing about the museums in Vizag. It says it was opened in 2016. I posted three photos which list out the activities that are lined up in the museum and the things that are in display and hence it is self-explanatory. May be in the future once I visit it personally I can give my honest feedback on the museum.

Apparently a well doing steel plant, with all the commercial elements on par with its private competition, VSP is reported to have incurred huge losses, not because of its failure to sell its products, but wholly because of its mismanagement, large-scale corruption and an utter apathy on the part of the ministry in curbing the losses when they were manageable.

Vizag Steel Plant observes National Fire Service Day

VISAKHAPATNAM: The Central Industrial Security Force’s (CISF) Fire Wing deployed at Visakhapatnam Steel Plant (VSP) commenced Fire Service Week from April 14 to 20, coinciding with the observance of National Fire Service Day, dedicated to honouring the brave firefighters, who lost their lives in the Bombay Dock explosion on April 14, 1944, and in subsequent incidents.

Various awareness programmes are scheduled throughout the week aimed at educating employees of VSP, their families, workers, schoolchildren, and the public about fire safety practices. RINL Director (Projects) and Additional Charge Director (Operations) Arun Kanti Bagchi along with CGMs and other VSP HODs attended the event.

Arun Kanti Bagchi lauded the role of CISF in ensuring the security and fire protection of VSP and emphasised the future potential of VSP as a Centre of Excellence.Attar Mohammed Haneef, Senior Commandant of CISF-VSP Vizag, outlined the activities planned for the week to educate various stakeholders on fire safety measures. He highlighted the commendable work done by the Fire Wing over the past year, which resulted in the preservation of assets worth crores of rupees at the Steel Plant.

The ceremony included floral tributes to the martyrs and a two-minute silence in remembrance of the firefighters who sacrificed their lives in the line of duty. As part of this, a brochure titled ‘Ensure Fire Safety, Contribute towards Nation Building’ was released.

The power plant has three Turbo Generators of 60 MW each (180 MW total) capacity and two Turbo generators of 67.5 each (135MW total) for a total captive coal-fired power generation capacity of 315 MW. The units were commissioned from 1989 to 2009. In 2015, RINL added 120 MW of gas-fired capacity, fueled by blast furnace gas and coke oven gas. [3] The plant fuels the Vizag steel plant , which has a production capacity of 7.3 million tonnes per annum. [4] [5]

Visakhapatnam Steel Plant achieves another record turnover

The Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited (RINL), also called the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant, has achieved a record turnover of Rs 2,508 crores in the month of December 2022. Despite the threats of privatisation, the steel plant has been continuously showing an upward trend in its profits.

The Visakhapatnam Steel Plant Chairman and Managing Directors (CMD), Atul Bhatt, expressed his gratitude and wished for a better 2023. Addressing the media on Tuesday, he said that the RINL has achieved its best turnover since its inception. He added that for the fourth consecutive time, the RINL has been named the ‘National Energy Leader’. In order to meet the requirements of the Indian Railways, the Steel Plant has manufactured more than 2000 LBH wheels. The CMD also said that stabilization works are being carried out at the plant to increase production speed.

Appreciating the efforts of the Steel Plant staff in meeting all the requirements, the CMD said that nearly Rs. 1,235 crores worth of orders were placed with the RINL on the Government e-Marketplace (GeM). He also added that RINL is the second choice in procurement through the GeM.
