Waterford crystal is famous worldwide for its beauty and brilliance, and it is headquartered in the beautiful town of Waterford, Ireland on the west coast of the country.

Irish Pottery and Ceramic

Beautiful pottery and ceramic are extremely popular in Ireland, and you can find them in small tea houses and craft shops around the country.

In our experience, the Dingle Peninsula in particular has a wonderful selection!

For the most iconic (and priciest, too), you can’t beat the beauty of Belleek china.

Original Art

For a particularly memorable souvenir, consider picking up a piece of original Irish art to display in your home.

Guinness Memorabilia

Touring the Guinness Storehouse is one of the most popular things to do in Dublin–and while there, Guinness fans will have plenty of opportunities to shop for Guinness-themed souvenirs, including beer glasses, t-shirts, replicas of vintage signs, and more.

Of course, even if you don’t visit the Guinness Storehouse, you can still easily find Guinness memorabilia for sale all over Ireland.

It’s easy to fall in love with tea drinking and the charm of a beautiful tea set while in Ireland–even if, like me, you were never much of a tea-drinker before visiting.

Images of the Dublin Doors

As you stroll the streets of Dublin, you’ll notice that the residents of the city have a wonderfully colorful tradition: the beautiful Georgian front doors of Dublin’s homes tend to be extremely colorful!

There’s a long history behind why , but today, the doors are an iconic symbol of Dublin, and images of them make excellent souvenirs from Ireland, whether that’s in the form of a photo, a painting, or even a magnet!

Personally, we tend to be partial to food-centered souvenirs on our travels, as they make it so easy to extend a trip by bringing part of a destination home with us.

These foodie souvenirs from Ireland are perfect for bringing a taste of Ireland home!

Irish Whiskey

Whether you go for the ever-famous Jameson whiskey (you can even pick some up after touring the distillery, if you’d like!) or for one of Ireland’s more niche whiskey producers, whiskey lovers will find plenty of opportunity to stock up on local Irish whiskey!

Brown Bread

Not all of Ireland’s delicious food can be easily transported home–but Irish brown bread (also known as Irish soda bread) easily can be.

Irish Chocolate

There is some delicious artisanal chocolate that is made in Ireland… but Dublin is also the home of Cadbury, and many Cadbury connoisseurs swear that the chocolate is just a bit tastier when purchased in Ireland!

Irish cheeses–and dairy products in general–are some of the absolute best on the planet.

If your idea of the perfect souvenir is something you can wear, these Ireland souvenirs might be for you.

Claddagh Ring

Dating to the 17th century, Irish Claddagh rings are one of the most popular things to buy in Ireland and carry symbolism that reaches beyond a fond memory of a trip.

Wear the ring on your right hand with the heart facing away from your body to symbolize that you’re single, on your right hand with the heart facing inward to symbolize that you’re in a relationship, and on your left hand with the heart facing out to show that you’re engaged.

Finally, if you’re married, the ring is worn as a wedding band, on the left hand with the heart facing inward.

However you wear your Claddagh ring, there’s no doubt that it is an especially meaningful purchase when in Ireland where the tradition originated–and especially if you’re taking a romantic trip with your partner!

Other Silver Jewelry

If a Claddagh ring isn’t your style, Ireland still has a wide variety of beautiful jewelry to shop for. The country is especially known for its gorgeous silver pieces.

Aran Sweater

An Aran wool sweater is one of the most popular and iconic souvenirs from Ireland, and is definitely a beautiful one!

The craft hails from the Aran Islands, located a short ferry ride away from Doolin (near the Cliffs of Moher), but even if you don’t make it out to the islands, the sweaters are easy to find–you can find them for sale all over the country.

Other Wool Items to Wear

Want a piece of Aran wool to wear but don’t want a sweater? Hats, scarves, and gloves are also great options.

Donegal Tweed

Hailing from County Donegal, Donegal tweed is absolutely beautiful and makes for a lovely souvenir from Ireland.

Connemara Marble

Ireland’s famous Connemara marble is gorgeous and tends to have a distinct green hue–if you pass by the region of Connemara, a small piece of marble makes for an excellent (and easy to carry home) Irish souvenir!

Wool Blanket

If you love the idea of shopping for Irish wool but don’t like to wear it, consider picking up a thick wool blanket as one of your souvenirs from Ireland.

Love the idea of Irish wool, but prefer to knit a piece yourself?

Consider picking up some local yarn to bring home from Ireland!

Books About Ireland

One of my favorite things about traveling in English-speaking countries is the ease of picking up unique books that I may never come across shopping at home.

From books containing famous Irish quotes to little-known memoirs, there’s plenty to love about browsing bookshops in Ireland.

Bibliophiles will find plenty of literary Ireland souvenirs to choose from, and while you can’t go wrong with beautiful copies of works by famous Irish authors like Oscar Wilde and James Joyce, consider also picking up a book on local Irish history or culture!

If you have little ones in your life, Irish children’s books also make wonderful gifts to bring home from Ireland.

Only have a few Euro or a tiny bit of luggage space to spare as you go shopping in Ireland?

These easy, fun Ireland souvenirs might be for you!

Magnets are one of the most popular souvenirs to collect around the world: they’re inexpensive, easy to find, and lots of fun to pick out!

I bought a fun magnet with an Irish sheep on it during our first trip to Ireland years ago, and it still makes me smile whenever I see it.

While you can buy an artisanal ceramic mug in Ireland as we mentioned above, there are also plenty of inexpensive-but-fun touristy mugs for sale around Ireland that can make a great addition to your collection!

Postcards are the ultimate combination of inexpensive, easy to pack, and easily personalized, making them one of the best budget souvenirs from Ireland!

They tend to run .50 to 1 Euro each, but if you’re up to spending an extra couple Euro on top of that, consider filling a postcard out with your memories of the day right then and there–and then sending it to yourself so you can relive your Ireland memories as you return home.

Consider shipping fragile items home.

If you buy something that is particularly fragile, heavy, or potentially regulated, it’s definitely worth at least inquiring about the cost of shipping–many small businesses and artisans in Ireland are able and willing to ship their goods abroad.

Have a plan for what Ireland souvenirs you’d like to purchase before arriving.

There’s no need to stick to your plan exactly, of course–shopping spontaneously can be part of the fun of travel–but having a general idea of what you want to look for when shopping in Ireland can help add structure to your browsing, and in some cases, help limit indecisiveness (it definitely does for me!).

Consider quality over quantity.

When deciding what to bring home from Ireland, think about quality over quantity. It’s incredibly easy to end up buying more Irish souvenirs than you planned, and end up with more knick-knacks than you really need.

In our experience, it’s much better to buy 1-2 truly memorable souvenirs than a whole slew of less memorable ones!

Be prepared to pay steep prices for handmade goods.

For example, a truly handmade Aran sweater can easily be a couple hundred Euro–but if you’re willing to compromise with a machine-knit one as you weigh what to buy in Ireland, the prices will certainly drop.

Check on transportation regulations.

For the vast majority of these souvenirs from Ireland, there is absolutely no issue with bringing them back yourself in your checked luggage–but for food items, be sure to double-check any necessary regulations before packing up to leave.

For Americans like us,  check the TSA regulations here .

Note the place and date of purchase on your souvenirs from Ireland.

You may find it easy to remember when and where you purchased your beautiful souvenirs from Ireland now–but give it a decade or three, and you may be very glad you noted the place and year of purchase with the item!

We tend to write the info on the bottom of home decor pieces or Christmas ornaments and love the tradition of it–and, for example, we’ll definitely never forget what year we purchased our shamrock ornament in Waterford because of it.

… and leave extra space in your bag!

It’s definitely worth leaving a couple of extra outfits or gadgets at home in order to make sure you have room in your bag for a few of the best souvenirs from Ireland!

I’ve been to Ireland twice and I stand by all the souvenirs suggested here. The sweaters make EXCELLENT holiday or birthday gifts.

So glad you agree! The sweaters are incredible.

Brilliant ideas here! I love Butler’s Irish chocolate, and a visit to a Butler’s chocolate cafe (lots of them in Dublin) is one of my favourite/favorite things to do. Coffee, delicious chocolate and a chance to pick up some chocolate gifts is a great way to refuel for more sightseeing!

Sounds absolutely lovely!

I totally love Butler Chocolates and once I discovered them, tried to find them wherever I went. We found one near our hotel in Cork.

As for pottery, Nicholas Mosse is beautiful, sturdy pottery that can go dishwasher to table. Gorgeous sets in various patterns and multiple size bowls, table settings and serving platters. You can find in most pottery stores, especially in the Dublin area. Most shops will ship.

Totally love all your suggestions. However I couldn’t help but notice the lack of suggestions for buying for children. In my case it is grandchildren. I like the idea of sharing with them things / history of where I have traveled. Again thank you for sharing. Nan

Thanks, Nancy!

We don’t have many children in our lives at the moment, so it’s not in the forefront of our minds. You can certainly get wool products for children though (toys and clothing).

Buying ornaments for children is a great way to begin or add to a Christmas collection that they can have throughout their lives. Love your article and find it very helpful in planning our trip to Ireland this Fall.

I still have many of the ornaments my parents and grandparents bought for me over the years! They do make wonderful souvenirs. 🙂

Hope you have a fantastic trip to Ireland!

Booking your next trip back would be the perfect souvenir! 🙂

Great ideas–going to Ireland in Sept/23 on a cruise ship. One day in port in Cork and we have decided to do the Waterford Tour. Looking forward to returning to this beautiful country after a leave of over 20 years!

Thanks, Barbara! Hope you have a wonderful time in Ireland!

We loved the Waterford tour–very cool experience. 🙂

Ireland is home to some ancient history, beautiful vistas, hospitable culture, and of course, world-class products. On my first trip to the country, I remember wanting to bring home dozens of souvenirs from Ireland to show my friends and family, but I didn’t exactly have the room in my suitcase or the budget to do so!

With everything from handmade artisan crafts to traditional Irish whiskey, you’re better off checking an empty suitcase for all your goodies to bring home!

In this post, you’ll learn about the best Ireland souvenirs from food, clothing, jewelry, locally made products, and more!

You’ll also find some great tips for where to buy your souvenirs and how to get them home safely at the bottom of this post.

Happy Travels!

Best Food Souvenirs from Ireland

If you’re a true foodie traveler like I am, then you’ll appreciate this list of the best food souvenirs you can bring home from Ireland!

1. Locally Made Irish Cheese

ireland tourist gifts

Thanks to the thousands of roaming cows and sheep, Ireland has long been known for its aged, sharp goodness ! Everywhere from Dublin to Doolin you’ll find expert cheesemongers offering samples and wine pairings, as well as the perfect takeaway boxes.

You can find every type of cheese from those best for melting, cheddars paired with fruit, and those best for pairing with wine and dessert. My favorite place to sample cheese was on the Dingle Peninsula , where you can buy incredible sampling boxes for your trip out of town!

If you’re looking to bring a few blocks back home from Dublin, be sure to make a quick stop at Sheridans Cheesemongers – they’re one of the most famous cheesemongers in the country and are located right on Anne St. in downtown Dublin.

2. A Bottle of Irish Whiskey – One of the Most Iconic Souvenirs from Ireland

Jameson Whiskey is one of the most iconic souvenirs from Ireland

A personal favorite of mine, no trip to Ireland is complete without at least sampling this tasty Irish novelty! Add a trip to the Jameson Distillery on your visit to Dublin or Cork (well known for the Blarney Castle ), or buy a bottle of the good stuff at any general store, supermarket, or small shop in the country!

The bottles come in different sizes ( 375ml, 750ml, and 1000ml ), so be sure you taste it before purchasing if you aren’t typically a fan of whiskey. It’s often drunk on the rocks by the Irish, but it’s also very good mixed with ginger ale and a wedge of lime!

Since these Irish souvenirs are made of glass, you may feel uncomfortable packing it into your backpack or suitcase. If that’s the case, ship some home from Ireland or buy some after you return home!

And if you’re interested, check out this list of the best Jameson tours in Dublin!

3. Honey from Local Bees

Honey from local bees is one of the sweetest souvenirs from Ireland you can bring home

Believe it or not, Ireland is home to dozens of privately-owned bee farms. Since some of the earliest times in the country, people have been reporting high levels of honey bees .

Across the country, you’ll find different types of honey including those with a floral note, some sweet, and some more tart.

Honey makes for an excellent souvenir to bring home from Ireland owing to its unique qualities, delicious flavor, and all purchases help keep honey bee farms growing.

To give back to the local communities in Ireland, purchase a jar for you and a jar for a family member or friend back home!

They make for excellent birthday gifts, Christmas gifts, or “just because” Irish gifts and can easily fit into a backpack, suitcase, or even a purse (just be careful not to flip it over!)

4. Irish Chocolate

Though Cadbury Chocolate is sold all over the world, it makes for one of the best souvenirs from Ireland since they use real cow's milk from locally sourced farms

When you think of chocolate, you likely don’t think of Ireland… but, Ireland is actually home to some high-quality chocolates! Cadbury , for example, is sold all over the world, but it is extra special and in popular demand in Ireland.

Owing to the large amount of dairy farms across the country, Cadbury chocolates in Ireland are made with locally sourced real cow’s milk (not milk solids like most other production facilities).

Additionally, you can find some really terrific chocolateries in Ireland, as well. Start your sampling after you arrive in Dublin at The Leonidas Chocolate Shop or at Wilde Irish Chocolates in Tuamgraney, County Clare.

Enjoy endless samples while shopping and then get a TSA-approved box to go ! If they happen to be out of those (this does occasionally happen), then you can order some chocolate online and have it shipped to you (Amazon is great for this sort of thing!)

5. Irish Tea

ireland tourist gifts

Along your Ireland travels, if you’re a tea drinker you’ll likely spot that the Irish don’t sway too far from the classics.

The two most popular brands are Barry’s and Bewley’s and they can be found in most supermarkets and general stores as well as on the buffet table at most bed and breakfasts.

Similar to what you will find in the United Kingdom, the United States, and across Europe, the Irish enjoy the standard Irish breakfast tea, gold blends, and afternoon tea .

Commonly served with milk and sweetener or just black, Irish tea is a wonderful addition to any meal or to warm you up after a cold, rainy day in the Irish countryside.

Bring a box or two home for the perfect souvenir from Ireland for both you and your family!

6. Irish Soda Bread

I never used to believe that you can bring soda bread home as one of your souvenirs from Ireland, but the airlines allow it

If you’re like me and you could eat Irish soda bread (we call it simply “ Irish bread ” in our home, but it’s also known as “Irish brown bread” ) for breakfast, lunch, and dessert, then a home-baked loaf is perfect for your trip home!

It’s often sold in local bakeries and even along the side of the road in more rural areas of Ireland. As the name suggests, the loaf gets its beautiful rise from the addition of baking soda, where the addition of buttermilk gives it its airy, soft texture and bounce.

There is, in fact, another version of this Irish classic… you may find some bakers adding raisins, butter, and even caraway seeds to the recipe (this is my personal favorite version!).

This gives it a denser texture without as much of a rise, so it is common to cut very thin slices of this version for breakfast.

The Best Souvenirs from Ireland to Wear

If you prefer to wear your souvenirs, then take a good look at this list. These items are authentic Irish staples that you’ll actually see the locals wearing all over the country!

7. Irish Knit Scarf – one of the longest-lasting Ireland souvenirs you can buy!

ireland tourist gifts

When I was young, my sister visited Ireland and she brought me home an authentic Irish knit scarf made out of beautiful, white wool. To this day, I wear it all throughout the winter and fall owing to its elegant design and warmth !

Clothing made out of real wool or linen, whether it be from the Aran Islands or mainland Ireland, makes for some of the best souvenirs from Ireland you can possibly buy.

You can find beautifully designed scarves made of everything from soft linens and light silk to heavy, warm wool that is excellent for colder weather .

My favorite scarf color is ivory, however, they also make them in an array of lovely colors ranging from traditional green to deep blues, and more.

Irish scarves are one of the most popular and authentic souvenirs you can buy on the island, so be sure to pick up at least one for yourself!

8. Aran Wool Sweater

An Aran Island wool sweater is one of the most popular souvenirs from Ireland

Even more popular than an Irish scarf is a traditional Irish sweater ! Across Ireland, you’ll find them in every tourist store and local shop you enter. They’ll be made of beautiful, intricate stitch patterns and will come in a variety of amazing colors for every occasion.

However, not all Irish sweaters are created equal. If you’re looking for an authentic version of the classic, buy one made out of Aran Island wool !

If you visit during the colder off-seasons of spring and fall, you’ll notice the locals wearing these sweaters all over town in many places across Ireland (especially the fishermen – they’re also known as the “ Fisherman’s Sweater “).

Aran Island wool has a long history of how it was first created by the families on the Aran Islands on the west coast of Ireland back in the late 1800s.

Since then, it has developed into an iconic symbol of the lives of those who lived on the island and has become the single most popular product you can buy .

9. Claddagh Ring

A Claddagh ring is one of the most authentic souvenirs from Ireland you can buy

Even if you’re only 1/10 Irish, owning a Claddagh ring is a goal for many people. I wore one for about 10 years in my childhood (they were gifted to the girls in my family from a young age) and loved it until the day I lost it – I actually have a plan to buy a new one on my next visit to Ireland!

Claddagh rings hold a few different symbols: the hands, the heart, and the crown . The hands that come together in the center of the ring typically represent friendship, the heart is symbolic of love, and the crown is symbolic of loyalty.

These symbols are typical of Irish culture, though the ring is symbolic of many different ideals across several different cultures and religions , making it the perfect souvenir from Ireland even if you aren’t Irish at all!

To wear it according to tradition, if the tip of the heart is facing inward towards your hand, then you’re happily in a relationship with someone you love. If the heart is facing outward, you’re open to accepting love into your life .

Similar to most other rings, if it’s worn on your left hand and is facing inward, you are happily engaged or married . If it’s on the right hand and facing outward, the person is likely to be single .

10. Wool Mittens

Especially when made out of Aran Island wool, a pair of mittens are one of the bes souvenirs from Ireland to bring home

Especially in Ireland, a good pair of warm mittens are a must. Similar to the Irish scarf and sweater, mittens complete the lineup ! It is rare to visit Ireland in the cooler months and not see practically every Irish man and woman in the full getup.

While picking out a pair of Aran Island wool mittens will definitely keep you warm and toasty , it isn’t necessary. Across Ireland, you can find very high-quality wool mittens that will keep you warm and toasty while sightseeing for a lower price.

A pair of good mittens makes for an excellent gift for yourself or someone else and is a great souvenir to bring home from Ireland.

11. Scally Cap (or “cap” in Ireland)

ireland tourist gifts

Like that of the Aran Island wool sweaters, there will be few men in sight without a traditional scally on! These hats, or caps , make for a stylish addition to many outfits with styles ranging from casual to formal and every occasion in between.

While you can find them in most shops around the country, be sure to take a peek at the tag before purchasing. Less common materials that are sometimes used include corduroy, linen, or even leather, which are sometimes a giveaway that it wasn’t made in Ireland.

However, if the cap is made of tweed, wool, or cotton, or a mixture of these, this is a good sign that the cap was likely made locally. Another good giveaway is if you see the Irish flag next to the written materials!

Most Popular Souvenirs from Ireland

The souvenirs below don’t fall into the categories of food or clothing, but are very special and authentic nevertheless!

12. Donegal Tweed – one of the best multi-purpose souvenirs from Ireland!

Donegal tweed is one of the more rare and sought after souvenirs from Ireland

Production of this popular material began on the northern side of the country in County Donegal . It originated as one of the finest handmade tweeds across Ireland and the UK, and has continued to grow as one of the best manufactured materials you can buy in Ireland!

The tweed has been being made for centuries (both by hand and more recently by machines) and is most commonly used for caps, suits, vests, and most outerwear.

Don’t worry, you won’t need to travel all the way up to County Donegal for your tweed – you can find already made products all over the country as well as balls of the tweed itself ready for purchase.

So, if you have some knitting and sewing skills, I suggest grabbing a few balls of this popular product and making your very own souvenir from Ireland!

13. Waterford Crystal – one of the most expensive souvenirs from Ireland you can buy

Waterford crystal is easily one of the most expensive souvenirs from Ireland you can buy

Well known across the European Union, Waterford crystal is one of the most luxurious products from Ireland you can bring home.

It is often made into jewelry, but also makes for a beautiful gift on its own and is often collected by jewel enthusiasts.

Keep in mind before purchasing your crystal to check and make sure it is authentic ! There are some retailers who claim to have crystals of the same quality as Waterford, but if you want this authentic souvenir from Ireland, then be sure to look out for this one thing…

The Waterford acid stamp ! Hold the crystal up to the light and look for either the name “Waterford” to be inscribed in the piece in a gothic script or a tiny Waterford symbol.

Either one of these will prove the product is real, however, you may need a magnifying glass to find the symbol.

14. A Book from Trinity College – among the best things to buy in Ireland – Dublin

ireland tourist gifts

If you’re flying into Dublin, it is likely that you have plans to visit the infamous Trinity College. The Long Room is quite magical and boasts a Harry Potter aura that is both exciting and overwhelming!

If you plan on joining a tour to learn about the Book of Kells (highly suggested), then there is oftentimes an opportunity to purchase a book from the library at the end.

Of course, you will not be able to purchase the Book of Kells itself, but there are thousands of other options that might peak your fancy along the tour.

15. Irish Yarns

ireland tourist gifts

While many sweaters and hand-knit products are produced using wool or the popular Donegal tweed, yarn is the next most popular material in the country .

Often used for making hats, mittens, scarves, blankets, and baby outfits, Irish yarn is a warm material that is less itchy than wool.

It is also less expensive than the aforementioned materials, so if you’re hoping to find a great souvenir from Ireland that doesn’t break the bank, then buy a few spools of some authentic Irish yarn that you can use to knit your very own beanie at home!

16. Pottery and Ceramics

ireland tourist gifts

I’m not sure about you, but I find that there is something special about eating out of a handmade bowl or drinking out of a handmade mug.

If you agree, then luckily for us there are dozens of wonderful pottery and ceramic stores across Ireland. You can find everything from delicate plates and beautiful mugs to full tea sets!

Check out Brookwood Pottery in Dublin before boarding your plane home or Castle Arch Pottery in Kilkenny along your road trip! They both create some of the best pottery in the country and offer shipping across Ireland, the UK, the USA, and Canada.

17. Christmas Ornaments

ireland tourist gifts

Ireland has been well known for its craftsman skills for centuries. From Aran Island wool and Donegal tweed to Waterford crystal and Connemara marble, it’s no wonder that their glass-making skills are equally exceptional!

In many shops in Ireland, you’ll find large sums of manufactured ornaments that ship by the hundreds. However, you’ll also find some wonderful shops filling their walls with hand-painted, home-blown glass ornaments.

Paintings range from scenic waterfront views to the classic Irish shamrock , and more!

Yes, these will cost you a pretty penny, so if you plan on bringing one of these Ireland souvenirs home with you, budget ahead of time or plan to compensate somewhere else in your trip.

18. Jewelry

When it comes to buying souvenirs from Ireland, you can't go wrong by picking out a Celtic cross or earrings with the Celtic knot

Jewelry is a classic Irish souvenir that many people bring home with them from Ireland. You can find everything under the sun including pendants, earrings, necklaces, bracelets, anklets, rings, pins, and more!

The most common Irish jewelry contains either the iconic Celtic cross or Celtic knot . Materials for Irish jewelry typically range between silver, gold, and platinum and can be found within a vast variety of places and budgets.

Personally, I found the more authentic pieces to be found outside of the big cities. I loved perusing through John Weldon Jewellers in Dingle and JJ Kenneally Jewellers in Limerick !

While much of the jewelry in the cities is quite beautiful and most of the time authentic (as long as you’re not going into chain jewelry stores), it’s often overpriced since it’s a high tourist area.

So, save yourself a little bit of money, and instead check out the great jewelers in the small towns of Ireland!

19. Irish Linen

ireland tourist gifts

Ireland is one of the last remaining producers of linen in the entire world – if that doesn’t catch your eye, it should! It is rare to come across such a special product that was once used by the pharaohs of Egypt (it is also one of the oldest textiles in the world!)

Linen is woven from the fibers of the flax plant which has been grown across Ireland for centuries by local farmers.

Today, while synthetic fibers have replaced much of the current linens produced around the world, Ireland is still home to luxury items (such as upholstery, garments, and tablecloths) produced by the craftsmanship of flax-produced linen.

Owning an item made from handcrafted linen is a symbol of wealth and luxury in Ireland, so if you’re looking for an item to impress your friends, this is it!

20. Connemara Marble

ireland tourist gifts

As one of the most luxurious and highly-valued materials in Ireland, Connemara marble is typically only bought by those who can truly afford it.

At nearly $200 per square meter or more, this rare marble is often used in home design or while constructing famous buildings (such as the Galway Cathedral!)

Found exclusively along the Wild Atlantic Way in Ireland, this marble is truly unique. It’s often found with hundreds of different shades of green running through it and is one of the rarest forms of marble in the world.

It is also known as the “Irish gemstone” owing to its wonderful use in jewelry and is highly coveted throughout the country.

If you’re looking for one of the rarest and most valuable souvenirs from Ireland to bring home, look no further!

Budget-Friendly Souvenirs from Ireland

If you’re looking to do your shopping in Ireland on a budget, check out these low-cost souvenirs that are easy to find and won’t break the bank!

21. Locally Crafted Soap

ireland tourist gifts

As we’ve already gone over, Ireland is well known for its talented citizens who are crafting artfully designed products everywhere you look! Soap, in this case, is no different.

Local shops produce everything from bath soaps to exfoliating soaps and make use of some of the best local products from Ireland . Items such as lemon, lavender, lemongrass, and hemp are popular ingredients in craft soap shops.

Outside of soap, there are also endless butters, balms, candles, and oil diffusers that can be bought in person then shipped home, or bought online and delivered right to your door!

Homemade soaps make for great stocking stuffers at Christmas and pair nicely with other natural products for an organic goodie bag from Ireland.

22. A Guinness Glass – one of my personal favorite souvenirs from Ireland that I brought home!

Guinness glasses make for one of the best souvenirs from Ireland

Out of all of the souvenirs from Ireland that we’ve talked about, this one is a must ! Even if you aren’t a fan of stouts, drinking a Guinness in Ireland is practically required (unless you don’t drink alcohol).

A classic Guinness glass can be bought pretty much anywhere in Ireland from tourist shops to local stores. Worried about the glass breaking on your return home?

You can also buy a mini shot glass with the Guinness logo (we got one in the shape of a stein and love it) or purchase one online to have it shipped home to you.

Now, I’m not one for stealing and you didn’t hear this from me, but if you’re really looking to take one of the most authentic souvenirs from Ireland home with you follow these instructions…

After you order your first ever pint of Guinness from the pub, don’t give the glass back – again, you didn’t read this here! You could also always pick one up at the Guinness Storehouse in Dublin .

23. A CD from A Local Band

ireland tourist gifts

Everywhere you go in Ireland, whether you’re in a big city like Dublin or Galway or in a small, fishing town like Cobh or Dingle , you’re going to hear live traditional Irish music playing around every corner.

We found that we chose each new pub that we visited based on the music coming out the doors (we really love Irish music) and then bought a CD if the band was selling them.

You can usually pick up the local CDs for around 10 euros and they often include many popular Irish songs such as Galway Girl , Whiskey in the Jar , and others.

Just be careful if you purchase a CD with a sticker covering … after a while, the sticker begins to peel and the CD could get stuck in your player – yes, I’m speaking from experience.

24. Locally Made Candles

ireland tourist gifts

Remember when I was telling you about how Ireland is home to thousands of colonies of bees and hundreds of beekeepers ? Well, they also make candles in addition to their honey!

Ireland is proud to offer locally made candles from the very same bees that bring you the delicious honey in stores across the country.

The local candles, while some are infused with other products to take on a specific scent, are often made to fill the air with the natural smell of wax and sweet honey . If you’ve ever smelled a candle made of organic beeswax and nothing more, you’ll know what I’m talking about.

If not, be sure to grab a few of them to bring home as they are truly one of the best souvenirs from Ireland that you can buy!

25. Coffee Mug

A coffee mug is one of the best souvenirs from Ireland you can buy since you can use it for traditional Irish coffee or your morning tea

Every morning in Ireland, tea and coffee is served alongside pastries, rashers, and potatoes. For me, this was simply heaven! I don’t indulge much when it comes to breakfast, but boy did that change when I was in Ireland.

The best way to recreate your Irish mornings at home is to treat yourself with a coffee mug representative of Ireland! This can mean covered in shamrocks like the one above, or it can mean a classic tea mug that you’ll see in most bed and breakfasts.

Both will make you reminisce on your time in Ireland each day you’re home making it one of the best souvenirs from Ireland you can buy in my opinion.

26. Shamrock Pendant

A shamrock pendant is definitely one of the most special souvenirs from Ireland you can find

Want the luck of the Irish on your side for your trip home? Purchase a fun shamrock pendant to put on your backpack or purse!

It may be one of the more touristy Ireland souvenirs that you can buy, but it is no less fun.

You can find small shamrock pendants at most tourist shops and even when checking out in supermarkets if you’re looking for a cheaper one.

But, you can also find beautifully crafted pendants in many jewelry stores across the country!

27. Postcard

ireland tourist gifts

Now, this is probably going to be the least authentic Irish souvenir that you can buy, however, they are fun to send to friends and family members while you’re away making them one of the best cheap things to buy in Ireland .

If you plan on doing this, you have a couple of different options. First, there are the mass quantities of silly pictures or shamrock-covered postcards that you can throw in any mailbox.

Second, you can look for a hand-painted design or beautiful photo that only had a limited amount of copies produced.

While both of these are great for sending to a friend or keeping for yourself, I have a great tip for you…

Buy at least one really nice postcard (picture or hand-painted) and frame it ! This will save you a lot of money on buying artwork if you’re on a tight budget and will make for an excellent addition to your home!

FAQ: Souvenirs from Ireland

I’ve provided you with some helpful travel tips for getting your souvenirs from Ireland home as well as some answers to popular questions that you may have!

What is an Irish Gift?

ireland tourist gifts

An Irish gift is, in essence, a memento or keepsake that captures the unique charm, heritage, and cultural richness of Ireland. These can range from traditional items such as Irish woolen goods, Celtic jewelry, and Irish whiskey, to artisanal products like locally-sourced cheese and handmade soaps.

Irish gifts bring the recipient a touch of the Emerald Isle, often carrying with them stories of Irish folklore, symbolism, and history. Moreover, an Irish gift is not just about the physical item but also the sentiment and the memory it encapsulates.

Whether it’s a Claddagh ring symbolizing love, friendship, and loyalty or a bottle of Jameson whiskey, each gift is a token of Irish tradition and hospitality.

What Can You Bring Back from Dublin?

Dublin offers a plethora of unique souvenirs and mementos that you can bring home to share a piece of your Irish experience.

You can pick up some local Irish honey or an Irish scally cap to impress your friends among many other items included in this list.

What to Gift an Irish Friend?

ireland tourist gifts

When it comes to gifting an Irish friend, it’s all about thoughtfulness and a touch of their heritage. Here are a few ideas:

  • Artisanal Irish Foods: How about some delectable Irish chocolates from Butlers or a selection of cheeses from local farms? They’re perfect for a friend who appreciates gourmet treats.
  • Books by Irish Authors: For a book lover, consider works by famous Irish authors like Oscar Wilde, James Joyce, or contemporary ones like Sally Rooney.
  • Irish Music: A traditional Irish music CD (or even Irish concert tickets!) could be a great gift for a music enthusiast. It’s a beautiful way to celebrate and share their culture.
  • Irish Sportswear: If your friend is a sports fan, merchandise or jerseys from their favorite sports team would make a great gift.
  • A Bottle of Irish Whiskey: Last but not least, a bottle of Irish whiskey can be a perfect gift to celebrate special occasions.

Remember, the best gift comes from the heart. It’s about showing that you appreciate and respect their Irish heritage.

Where Should I Buy My Souvenirs in Ireland?

When bringing home your souvenirs from Ireland, follow these packing tips

Similar to most of the world, not every store you happen to cross in Ireland will be authentic. If you are buying a postcard, you can, of course, get that anywhere.

But, what about the special Irish items like Donegal tweed or Waterford crystal ? Well, you’re going to have to go right to the source for these if you want them to be authentic.

Head north to County Donegal for the best handmade Donegal tweed in Ireland. Or head West to the town of Waterford where you’ll find the company’s headquarters and factory!

Some items need to be bought directly from the producer, however, others don’t. For example, you can find authentic wool-knit Irish sweaters and scarves all over the country – just be sure not to buy them in a tourist shop in Dublin or it may say made in China, or elsewhere.

If you want to ensure an item is authentic, check the label or tag . It will almost always tell you where it was made!

How Can I Get My Delicate Souvenirs from Ireland Home?

ireland tourist gifts

✔️ Ship Them

While this is typically more expensive, you can almost guarantee a much safer journey for your valuables since you can pack them according to your standards.

If you’re traveling with glass or fragile items, go directly to the post office and wrap them in bubblewrap galore before taping the box up tight and shipping it home.

What a nice way to surprise yourself when you return home!

✔️ Check Them

This is the most popular way of getting your souvenirs from Ireland home, however, it isn’t always the safest.

I packed two Guinness glasses as well as several shot glasses in my backpack on my first trip home from Ireland and nothing broke.

But, that was because I was extremely careful and was able to keep my bag on my lap most of the time.

If you’re traveling with a large bottle of Jameson or a new coffee mug, be sure to roll them up tight in your clothing to prevent them from rolling around and breaking – what a nightmare that would be!

Things that are Cheaper in Ireland than America

ireland tourist gifts

Believe it or not, there are a bunch of souvenirs Ireland is home to that you can snag for a bargain when compared to the States. First up, Irish whiskey. It’s no secret that Ireland is the birthplace of some fantastic whiskey brands, so if you’re a fan of the golden liquid, you’ll save a pretty penny buying it directly from the source.

Next on the list are wool products. Ireland is famous for its high-quality wool, and products like Aran sweaters are much cheaper when purchased from the locals. They’re warm, stylish, and authentic—a perfect keepsake!

Lastly, let’s not forget about Irish crystal. Brands like Waterford are globally renowned, and you’ll find these premium items much cheaper in Ireland since you won’t have to cover the cost of fragile shipping and so forth.

What to Buy in Dublin Airport

ireland tourist gifts

Here’s a list of five must-buy items at Dublin Airport that will have you feeling like you hit the jackpot:

  • Chocolates from Butlers: We’re talking about melt-in-your-mouth chocolates that make for a perfect last-minute gift for your loved ones back home. Don’t miss out on their Irish Whiskey Truffle Box.
  • Irish Cheese: At Sheridan’s Cheesemongers in the airport, you’ll find an array of delightful, locally-sourced cheeses. Surprise your friends with a taste of Ireland’s dairy delicacies.
  • Celtic Jewelry: Need something shiny to remember your trip? Step into Fields and pick up a Claddagh ring or a Celtic knot pendant. These uniquely Irish designs are symbolic and beautifully crafted. I have a pair of Celtic knot earrings and absolutely love them!
  • Basic Trinkets: From fridge magnets and coffee mugs to t-shirts and picture frames, there are million different little items in Dublin Airport’s tourist shops!
  • Jameson Black Barrel: This is a special kind of whiskey that’s only available in Ireland. It’s triple distilled and twice charred for a rich, smooth taste. A perfect way to savor your Irish adventure long after you’ve returned home.

Souvenirs from Ireland

The 29 Best Souvenirs from Ireland (2024)

ireland tourist gifts

Looking for the best souvenirs in Ireland that are unique? You’re in the right place.

Souvenirs in Ireland have a lot of different themes – Celtic symbols like shamrocks or the trinity knot, comfy wool products, products related to Guinness Beer or Bailey’s Irish cream, products produced from family-owned Irish farms, and much more.

Aside from this, Ireland is a county of magical things- Irish folklore has created many myths and legends that star creatures such as leprechauns, elves and faeries, which have become iconic to Ireland.

All of these themes (Celtic heritage, farming, mythology, cold weather, rolling greens and St. Patrick’s Day) create an abundance of very cool souvenirs that you can’t find anywhere else.

galway

When I went to Ireland, there was so much to choose from in terms of souvenirs, and I came come with a very full suitcase of items for my daughter, myself and friends. Of the places I’ve been, Ireland is one of my favourite countries to find unique, earthy and authentic souvenirs.

Many of these souvenirs are hanging in our home, or used daily. There are even some that I didn’t manage to get my hands on, that are still on my wish list.

So, let’s jump in – the best, and most unique souvenirs from Ireland!

29 Unique Souvenirs from Ireland

Here are the 29 best souvenirs from Ireland that are unique

to the country and make great gifts.

1. Jewelry with Celtic symbols

Best for: Yourself, a friend or a family member Where to Buy: Souvenir stores around Ireland, or online

You will see a lot of Celtic symbols in Ireland, and there is very commonly jewelry made out of them – necklaces, bracelets, rings and earrings.

There are a lot of different kinds of Celtic symbols, such as the trinity, the Celtic knot and the Celtic cross.

ireland tourist gifts

Before Christianity came to Ireland, the country was mainly inhabited by Celtic people , and a lot of aspects of their culture have remained apart of Irish heritage. You can still visit fortresses in Ireland that were inhabited by the Celtics in the ancient times, such as the Staigue Fort .

The various types of jewelry with Celtic symbols were one of my favourite things to look at in Ireland. Although I can’t pretend to know a lot about Celtic heritage, I am fascinated by this ancient culture and the symbols.

My favourite Celtic symbol is the trinity, and I bought a necklace and earrings of it to bring home from Ireland.

Pro Tip: If you can’t find a Celtic symbol pendant you like in Ireland, there are also some beautiful ones made by small businesses on Etsy .

2. Wacky Woolies sheep gifts

Best for: kids, or anyone who would appreciate cartoonish, colourful sheep Where to Buy: most souvenir shops in Ireland, or online

Wacky Woolies are colourful cartoon sheep that you can find on Irish souvenirs and gifts. Sheep are a national symbol in Ireland , and its said that there are more sheep than people.

For this reason, you’ll see a lot of sheep on Irish souvenirs, such as fridge magnets and keychains. The Wacky Woolies are a fun, colourful sheep-related souvenir.

wacky woolies souvenir from Ireland

When I was in Ireland with my daughter, we both fell in love with the Wacky Woolies products and brought back a few different souvenirs – a ball, a kid’s travel pillow . They were all good quality and have still lasted to this day.

If you like the design but aren’t buying for a child, then I recommend a Wacky Woolies ceramic mug or a hand bag.

Take a look at the different Wacky Woolies gifts here

3. Aran Islands Knitwear

Best for: Anyone who lives in a colder climate Where to buy: In Galway, the Aran Islands or online

Since Ireland is a country of sheep, Irish yarn and knitwear also makes a very good Irish souvenir. Did you know that there’s a sheep breed that is native to Ireland? Its called the Galway Sheep, and it comes from west Ireland in Galway county.

Aran Islands Knitwear makes sweaters, scarves, hats and other warm clothing from the wool of the Galway sheep. They’re a third generation family-owned business from Inis Mór, which is one of the Aran Islands , which are off the coast of Galway.

ireland tourist gifts

They have three locations in Ireland are all on the west coast – in Galway city, Cong and Clifden. But lucky for you, you can also buy their products online from their website .

Wool is a sustainable clothing material used to make clothing for thousands of years, and sheep aren’t harmed from their wool being taken off. The wool is fully biodegradable, but its also durable. Clothing made out of this quality wool can last decades.

Pro Tip: Don’t want to buy a ready-made sweater or scarf? You can also get Aran Islands yarn to make something yourself

4. A Claddagh ring

Best for: A friend, loved one, or romantic partner Where to Buy: Jewelry stores in Ireland, or online

The Claddagh ring is a traditional Irish ring with three symbols; a heart, a crown and two hands. The symbols represent love, loyalty and friendship.

The ring was designed in Claddagh Country, West Ireland in the 17th century and has been gifted by the Irish for hundreds of years. It’s commonly been given as an engagement ring in Ireland, but also has been a common family heirloom passed down generations.

ireland tourist gifts

You can find Claddagh rings made with either white gold , yellow gold or Sterling Silver.

If you’d like to buy a Claddagh ring in Ireland, I recommend popping in to some jewelry stores to take a look as there are slightly different styles. Occasionally, there are emeralds or jewels in them. You can shop for them at the Irish store Claddagh Rings online (they ship to other countries.)

Claddagh rings aren’t a cheap souvenir – a sterling silver one will cost around $40 , while gold ones can cost hundreds of dollars each.

Pro Tip: Some say its bad luck to buy yourself a Claddagh ring, but thats just a superstition! If you like the design, don’t hesitate to buy yourself one of these beautiful and symbolic rings. They make great, lifelong keepsakes and symbols of Ireland.

5. A fairy door

Best for: Children, or parents of children Where to Buy: Irish toy stores or online

You may notice that there are many “fairy trails” in Ireland. Children can go for a walk through a wooded area with fairy houses and doors attached to trees for them to spot during the walk.

Fairies have deep roots in Irish culture . They connected with traditional Irish beliefs in An Saol Eile (the Otherworld.)

ireland tourist gifts

If you visit Ireland with kids , I highly recommend going on a fairy walk. Its such a fun way to stimulate children’s imagination and creative thinking. I also brought home a fairy door as a souvenir from Ireland.

One of the most popular manufacturers of fairy doors in Ireland is the Irish Fairy Door Company . You can buy their products on their website , they ship worldwide. You can even register a fairy, which is very cute and might be fun for the child in your life.

Had trouble finding a fairy door in Ireland? Check out the Irish Fairy Door Company on Amazon

6. Irish chocolates

Best for: anyone who likes chocolate (vegan chocolate included) Where to Buy: Irish chocolate factories, souvenir shops or supermarkets

Ireland’s farming industry produces often high quality dairy products; chocolate being one of them.

There are a few different popular Irish chocolate brands. One of the best ones is Beans and Goose, and they make chocolates and other treats that are sourced from ingredients in Ireland.

Irish chocolates as souvenirs from Ireland

If you happen to be on the Wild Atlantic Way, you should stop at Hazel Mountain Chocolate which is near the Burren. You can look through the window into their chocolate factory , and grab some treats to take home!

Chocolate Factory experiences are also offered by Wilde Irish Chocolates . Depending on where in Ireland you go, there are different chocolate factories, and companies.

If you buy chocolate in Ireland, be sure that its an Irish brand so that you can be sure its not something you can get at home.

Pro Tip: If you enjoy Cadbury, you should look for Irish brands of Cadbury chocolate bars. Cadbury is British but there is such a thing as Irish Cadbury chocolate as well.

7. Waterford Crystal

Best for: someone very special Where to Buy: at the Waterford factor, or online

Waterford crystal products have been produced in Ireland since 1793 , in the city of Waterford in southeast Ireland that they’re named after.

These crystal products are made with very high-quality craftsmanship and are famous for having a sparkle. They have even been admired by the Royal Family.

ireland tourist gifts

If you visit the city of Waterford, you can do a guided tour of the House of Waterford , which is the crystal factory where they make high-end products . At the end of the tour, you can visit the 12,000 square-foot store to shop for special gifts

Needless to say, Waterford Crystals aren’t a cheap Irish souvenir. Most items from the official Waterford website are $1,000 each. However, you can get much less expensive Waterford Crystal items on amazon.

Pro Tip: These days, a lot of the production of the Waterford Crystal has been outsourced to other countries and isn’t the same quality as when it was only made in Ireland. However, some of it ( over 750 tonnes of quality crysta l per year) are still produced in Waterford so just look for the ‘Made in Ireland’ label if this is important to you!

8. Irish Blessing Quotes

Best for: a good friend, or a close family member Where to Buy: souvenir shops around Ireland

Irish blessings are a traditional part of Irish culture , they’re found in songs, poems and stories. Irish blessings are positive and uplifting, expressing love, joy, friendship and hope.

The other nice thing about Irish blessings is you can find them on a lot of inexpensive Irish souvenirs, like a notepad, magnet or something you would hang in your home.

ireland tourist gifts

Here is one of my personal favourite Irish blessings: “May your troubles be less, and your blessings be more. And nothing but happiness come through your door.”

Irish blessings are just nice to hang up as positive reminders, and they make great souvenirs from Ireland because of their roots in Irish literature and culture.

You will see a variety of blessings on many different kinds of souvenirs, but you should check out items on Etsy for inspiration or get an idea of what you’re looking for. You might find an Irish blessing quote that resonates with you the most.

9. Traditional Donegal tweed

Best for: Parents , in-laws, grandparents Where to Buy: Donegal, or Dublin

Donegal tweed is a fabric that has been woven in County Donegal, Northern Ireland for centuries . Its known for being very warm, and is unique because of its speckled, uneven colours in the fabric.

All of the Donagal tweed fabrics are made from yarn produced from sheep that are raised in Donegal.

ireland tourist gifts

Many Donegal tweed fabrics are made for men, often used to make the Irish wool flat cap, but it can be worn by women too, and people of all ages. Until the introduction of machines in the 1950s, all Donegal tweed was handwoven.

If you’re interested in the craft of hand weaving, I recommend visiting the Donegal Tweed Visitors Center (2.5 hours west of Belfast) to learn about this centuries-old craft. The visitor’s center is family-owned and welcomes visitors with open arms.

Not going to be in Northern Ireland? Check out The Donegal Shop in Dublin which also sells authentic Donegal tweed products. In addition to hats and ties made of donegal tweed, they also sell aran knitwear and other unique Irish souvenirs.

Pro Tip: Real Donegal tweed can be pretty pricey – a hat can cost around €85, a tie around €50. However, its very durable and something that will last a lifetime.

10. Items with words in Irish on them

Best for: Anyone who appreciates old Irish heritage Where to Buy: Souvenir stores in Ireland, or online

Irish is a Celtic language native to Ireland, and until the 1900s, was the first language of most people in Ireland.

Irish is still spoken as a first language by some people today but only about 2% of the population. If you go to the Aran Islands, you may hear people using Irish to communicate.

You can get T-shirts, magnets, notebooks and all kinds of items that have Irish words on them.

Things with Irish printed on them instead of English is something unique to Ireland that you can only get there, so I recommend this if you’re looking for something traditionally Irish.

Pro Tip: I like for example, this bag that says teaglach which means ‘family.’

11. Shamrock shaped gifts

Best for: Anyone Where to Buy: Irish souvenir stores

It’s no doubt that when you think of Ireland, one image that comes to mind is probably a shamrock. The word shamrock comes from the Irish word seamróg which means ‘little clover.’

The shamrock was originally used as a religious symbol when Christianity was brought to Ireland, (Saint Patrick used to describe the Holy Trinity.) Nowadays though, the shamrock is seen as a symbol of luck, of Saint Patric’s Day and of Ireland.

souvenir from Ireland the shamrock

What better place to get St. Patrick’s Day stuff than from Ireland, the country of origin? You can get clothing, and other cute souvenirs with shamrocks, and its really the only country in the world with the shamrock as the main symbol.

12. Bailey’s Irish Cream

Best for: someone who likes Bailey’s Where to Buy: Molloys in Dublin, or online

The Bailey’s Irish Cream drink was created in 1974 and was the first Irish cream on the market.

Its a very popular drink and its shipped worldwide, so you’re probably used to seeing it everywhere. However, you can get a much larger variety of Bailey’s products in Ireland.

You can buy a variety of different Bailey’s products from Molloys (a Dublin liquor store with several locations) or from the Bailey’s online store.

13. Traditional Irish music souvenirs

Best for: someone musicly inclined Where to Buy: music retailers in Ireland, or online

Celtic music has deep roots in Irish culture; common instruments are the drum (called a bodhrán), a Celtic harp, fiddle and flute.

Some Celtic music is slower, and other times its more upbeat and you can dance to it. The slower Celtic tunes are calming to listen to, can ease stress and promote relaxation. Here is an example of it that you can listen to it on Youtube.

ireland tourist gifts

The main music store in Dublin is called Music Minds and you can find it right downtown, just over the river from the legendary Temple Bar. You can also check out McNeela Music which is Ireland based but ships worldwide.

Both of these places are good places to get professional, high quality Celtic musical instruments.

Check out Celtic traditional instruments here

14. Irish Christmas Ornaments

Best for: Anyone who celebrates Christmas Where to Buy: church gift shops, souvenir stores, and online

Being a country with Christian heritage going back almost 1000 years, Christmas is an important holiday in Ireland.

Irish Christmas ornaments can haveCeltic symbols, the Claddaugh or even commonly shamrock. Some even have Irish blessings on them.

ireland tourist gifts

The Skellig House makes this simple Bless This House ornament for the Christmas tree, and its handcrafted in Ireland. Carollis Irish Gifts has a larger selection on their website.

Some people get a Christmas ornament home from every country they visit, but I don’t do this personally.

However, Irish souvenirs in particular suit the Christmas tree well, with the white and sparkly green. My daughter and I bought the “peace angel” from the St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Dublin. We love the angel with the shamrock and admire it on the tree every year!

Check out more Irish Christmas ornaments here

15. Irish cheese

Best for: anyone who isn’t vegan or lactose intolerant Where to Buy: grocery stores, and farmer’s markets

One of the things Ireland is most known for is its farming. The way the animals graze on fresh grass has a huge impact on the quality of the cheese.

Irish cheeses include strong cheddars (Hegarty’s and Mount Leinster) and goudas.

Irish cheese souvenir from ireland

Irish gouda cheese can be made with either cow’s milk (Coolea brand) or sheep’s milk (Kileen.)

It’s important to know that many countries prohibit you from bringing dairy products into the country, so you should check the rules of your country about what you’re allowed to bring back.

If bringing back a block of Irish cheese isn’t feasible, you could also consider a taste of Ireland gift box. If you can swing it, butter would be a good souvenir from Ireland too. (There’s even a butter museum in Cork .) However, this may not work depending on how far you’ve travelled.

Get your Taste of Ireland Gift box (with Irish cheese) here

Pro Tip: Looking for vegan Irish cheese? You have your pick, because Ireland has become much more vegan friendly over the years. Check out The Flying Squirrel Cheese , or the Green Goddess Fromagerie which make realistic looking (and tasting) Irish cheddar. These vegan cheeses can make a great gift from Ireland for someone else, or yourself. (Plus, bringing them back home isn’t usually a problem since there’s no dairy in it!)

16. Game of Thrones souvenirs

Best for: A Game of Thrones fan Where to Buy: Game of Thrones studio shop, or online

A large part of Game of Thrones was filmed in Northern Ireland , and the series employed quite a few Irish actors as well.

Not only can you visit a lot of the sets that were used in the TV series, but they have special GOT merchandise that is only sold there.

ireland tourist gifts

If you’re a Game of Thrones fan, I’d recommend doing the Studio Tour in Northern Ireland. It has the largest Game of Thrones merchandise store in the world -perfect place to get souvenirs of this amazing TV show.

At the studio tour gift shop, you can find Game of Thrones souvenirs that you can’t buy anywhere else, so its pretty special if you’re a GOT fan.

Pro Tip: Not heading to Northern Ireland? Zavvi in Ireland also makes unique Game of Thrones souvenirs and they ship worldwide.

17. An Irish wishing stone

Best for: a friend, or anyone who likes the colour green Where to Buy: Irish souvenir shops, or online

Irish wishing stones are made of connemarra marble , which is found on the West Coast of Ireland, in the town of Connemarra. Connemarrra marble is considered to be the Irish gemstone, and has beautiful swirly patterns.

Connemarra marble has deep roots in Ireland’s history , having been used for centuries as a means of exchange. Each stone is unique from all the others, so when you buy it, you know that there is no other stone exactly like it.

ireland tourist gifts

They are sometimes called wishing stones , other times worry stones, and good luck stones. You can get the one that fits best what you want.

If a luck or wishing stone isn’t for you, you can also get jewelry made of connemarra marble. You can get a connemarra marble claddaugh ring , or a variety of other jewelry sold by Connemara Marble official website.

Get your Connemarra marble worry stones here

18. Irish ‘crisps’ (chips)

Best for: Anyone Where to Buy: grocery stores and convenience stores in Ireland, or online

Like in England, the Irish use the word ‘crisps’ for what we would call ‘chips’ in North America.

Hunky Dory is the most popular chip brand in Ireland, and they make crinkle cut chips of a variety of flavours – salt and vinegar, Buffalo, sour cream and onion, and much more.

ireland tourist gifts

You can find these crips in most supermarkets. Ireland has a handful of supermarket chains that you could check in; Aldi, Tesco, Supervalu and Lidl.

Just be sure to pack the crisps well so that they don’t get crushed in your luggage.

19. Irish candies

Best for: Anyone Where to Buy: Irish supermarkets, sweet shops and souvenir stores

Like many countries, Ireland makes a lot of its own sweets! Candies make a fun souvenir; its consumable and doesn’t take up too much space. They also make a great Irish gift for someone at home.

ireland tourist gifts

Here are some examples of Irish candy to look for as a souvenir from Ireland.

  • Clove rock ( from Northern Ireland) – a red rock shaped sweet with a hard boiled white exterior
  • Jacob’s Jaffa Cakes – a cross between a cookie and a chocolate, with a squishy orange centre
  • Opal Fruits – basically the British Starburst
  • Black Jacks – have an aniseed flavour (be careful, they can turn your tongue black!)

20. Irish tea

Best for: A tea-drinker Where to Buy: Irish supermarkets or online

You don’t have to spend too long in Ireland before figuring out that they’re a country of tea-lovers. An afternoon ‘cuppa’ is enjoyed by many of the Irish, often with scones, biscuits or a slice of cake.

Irish teas are usually made with a base of assam black tea , and can be bought in tea bags or in loose-leaf form.

You may heard of English Breakfast Tea, but there is also an Irish Breakfast Tea , which is a bit stronger-tasting than the English breakfast and red in colour.

When buying Irish tea as a souvenir, try to stick to an Irish tea brand. The most popular Irish tea blend is Barry’s which has been produced since 1901.

There’s also Bewley’s, Lyons and Robert Roberts. In Northern Ireland, you can find Nambarrie’s and Thompson’s Punjana. You can find these in Irish supermarkets or souvenir stores. If you miss it, you can also find it online or on Amazon.

21. Irish Soda Bread

Best for: Anyone who eats bread (that isn’t vegan or lactose intolerant) Where to Buy: Irish bakeries and supermarkets

A fresh loaf of bread is always appreciated as a gift or something to bring home. Irish soda bread is traditionally made with flour, baking soda, salt, and buttermilk and has a longstanding history in Ireland.

In the famine years (known as An Gorta Mor in Irish) this soda bread was often the only thing people had on their table.

ireland tourist gifts

You can find soda bread in historic food markets, (such as the Milk Market in Limerick ) or Irish bakeries.

Be sure to freeze it when you get home if you aren’t going to eat it within a few days. You can eat it simply with butter, or toasted with butter and jam. It also pairs well with soups and stews.

Unlike fruit , meat or dairy products, bringing bread into other countries is not usually an issue.

Not enough room in your suitcase? Grab this Irish soda bread mix to make your own at home !

Whiskey is a uniquely Irish drink that has been produced since the Middle Ages. The word ‘whiskey’ comes from the Irish word uisce beatha , which means “water of life.”

Although whiskey is exported worldwide and can be found anywhere, you should look for Jameson 12 Distillery Reserve which can only be bought in Ireland.

ireland tourist gifts

Jameson 12 Distillery Reserve can be found at the Midleton Distillery in County Cork or the Old Bow Street Distillery in Dublin.

If you’re not particular about the type of whiskey you buy, then you can find a nice bottle of Irish whiskey at Molley’s Liquoir Store. Some Irish supermarkets, such as Lidl , sell spirts as well. You can also grab a last minute gift at the Dublin airport, duty free.

There’s no way we could discuss Irish souvenirs without mentioning leprechauns. Leprechauns are creatures from Irish folklore ; they are a fairy in the form of a man said to be living in the wilderness.

In fact, the word “leprechaun” is a Celtic word luchorpán which means “small body.”

In Irish legends, leprechauns are not necessarily ‘good’ characters. They are greedy and mischievous. But in the modern day, they’ve turned into an important symbol of Ireland and of St. Patrick’s Day.

Today, the most iconic Irish leprechaun is McMurphy , and you can get McMurphy Lucky O’ The Irish gifts throughout Ireland. McMurphy is said to bring ‘luck’ to any house.

Carollis Irish Gifts sells great McMurphy the leprechaun souvenirs which are perfect for kids.

26. A book by an Irish author

Best for: A book lover Where to Buy: Bookstores in Ireland, or Kenny’s Bookstop Online

Literature has an important place in Irish culture, with the history of legends, folklore and poetry. There are some classic Irish authors from history, as well as Irish authors that continue to write bestsellers.

The Irish love books, and you’ll be able to find a handful of bookstores regardless of the city you’re in. Depending on the title, some of the books are much harder to find outside Ireland.

ireland tourist gifts

If you have trouble finding the right book in person, there are also Irish online bookstores where you could browse. Kenny’s Bookhop Online and Books.ie both have an Irish fiction sections.

As a big reader, I love reading books that take place in the country I’m visiting -especially if they’re written by an author from that place.

I haven’t read a lot of Irish fiction, but one book I did read was called Brooklyn by Colm Tóibín (pictured above.) It takes place in both the U.S. and Ireland, and through descriptive words, it captures the beauty and charm of Ireland.

27. Medals of Irish Catholic Saints

Best for: Someone who is religious Where to Buy: Irish churches, or online

Christianity and Catholicism have deep roots in Irish culture . Saint Patrick converted Ireland to Christianity in the 400s AD (with the help of a shamrock which he used the leafs to described as the “father, son and holy spirit.”)

Ireland is a good place to get quality, authentic medals of Catholic saints. These can be worn as a necklace, or hung somewhere.

The Irish gift house sells Catholic Saint medals . You can expect to spend anywhere from $70-$120 per medal, as they’re made of real sterling silver.

Pro Tip: Most of the medals are of male Christian saints, but St. Brigit. However, Saint Brigit is harder to find – she’s often sold out.

Knitwear might not be for everyone, but you can find a variety of warm clothing from Ireland – sweatshirts, hoodies, scarves and winter hats.

ireland tourist gifts

These make great souvenirs from Ireland because they remind you of the cool Irish weather, but also useful when you go back home too (if you live in a colder climate, especially.)

Because cozy clothing is so popular in Ireland, you can find different options and sizes in most souvenir stores. The common colours tend to be greens, grays, whites and blacks. Usually there is always some green included, as its Ireland’s national colour.

If you have trouble finding what you want in person, you can also browse The Irish Shop online (they ship worldwide) or Amazon .

You can see puffins in different places in Ireland- the Cliffs of Moher , The Skelligs, and Horn Head in Northern Ireland. The Skelligs, an island off the coast of Ring of Kerry, is known for being one of the largest puffin populations in Ireland.

ireland tourist gifts

A company called Bear Essentials makes adorable Irish animal stuffies , including puffins, sheep and cows. This is the first place I’d look to for an Irish souvenir stuffed animal.

You can also find puffin, sheep and cow stuffies at other Irish souvenir shops. I saw some at the Cliffs of Moher gift shops, as well as almost every souvenir store in downtown Dublin.

What an awesome list! I want almost all of them :) Actually I own the Belleek Tea Cups #15 and they are beautiful and delicate. Thanks Stephanie for putting this together and including many small businesses like me. I hope you get a little Irish in your stocking this year. For those last minute shoppers out there – I’d add Irish Whiskey or some Guinness and/or some good tea which you could pick up at the grocers.

Thanks Abby! So glad to include you. I love the signs I just bought. So cute!!! :-)

Please don’t forget the Burren Perfumery.

A stellar option to visit on the burren — I believe in Kerry.

Yes, the lotions and potions from the Burren Perfumery in Co. Clare are wonderful!! https://burrenperfumery.com/

What good taste! I absolutely adore the Burren Perfumery. It’s still on my original gift guide back in 2012? (How was that almost 10 years ago?!). https://www.infiniteireland.com/top-20-christmas-gifts-for-the-ireland-fanatic/

A couple of other gifts that I bought for myself and treasure are:

A silver necklace from Declan Killen jeweler: declankillen.com

A slate with Welcome written in Ogham. We bought ours at a craft market, but there are many available online

I love these ideas, Paddi, especially a sign with Ogham. I have an Ogham necklace that I absolutely cherish. ❤️

My Travel Journal was a God send, but the one listed here is absolutely phenomenal. Just perfect. My daughter and new son in law are planning a delayed trip to Ireland. It will be a perfect gift. So many other great gift ideas. Thank You so much. Linda Charlotte’s Web was favorite in this house. Loved it. Can’t wait for the photos!!

Welcome Linda! I absolutely adore that journal too–way better than the ones I try to cobble together.

Watch your email tomorrow for a pic of the boys–they had such a great time!! ❤️

I love my Irish linen hand towels that I bought at Kylemore Abbey. They are beautiful. I was not happy when a teen actually used one and left a red food stain (probably hot chip dust), but I hand washed it and it came right out. I also love my spoon rest with KA signature fushia on it and coasters with Celtic images on them.

Oh Ione! What a lovely souvenir!! I love Irish linen and would have been very cross by a stain. Ha. You handled that like a champ. :-)

Love your gift suggestions. I love fun items from Wacky Woolies and beautiful bronze plaques from Wild Goose. I’ve also purchased hand printed wall decor from Biddy Murphy Irish Gifts (thru Amazon). Best wishes to you.

The Wild Goose has some beautiful pieces. I will have to add that suggestion to next year’s updates. Great idea!! :-)

Thank you for featuring my travel journal on your beautiful site! I’m honored to be part of such a stunning collection.

Welcome Cindy!! It’s stunning and functional. So hard to get both. :-)

Love all of these ideas! Hope to visit my number one bucket list in my near future. Reading Ireland travel blogs is my favorite pass-time, yours by far is my favorite, Stephanie!

I’m looking for a higher price item for a retirement gift around $500. Any suggestions for someone with a boyfriend in Ireland, so they will probably travel there, and she’s also a book-lover. I may just make a package with a book, blanket, tea cups, lotion, etc. But I want to check in here to see if there is a single item you would recommend.

16 best irish gifts – top souvenirs from ireland to get.

ireland tourist gifts

The Emerald Isle is a breathtaking destination that has a good balance of city fun and countryside tranquillity. The country has a rich heritage and culture that’s treasured by all Irish folks. One of the best ways to indulge in this history, apart from visiting, of course, is by getting a souvenir from Ireland as memorabilia.

Souvenirs are also great gifts for taking back home to people who couldn’t join you on your Ireland adventures. Additionally, they’re great if you find yourself suffering from some Irish nostalgia after spending time in the amazing country. That’s why I created this list of the best gifts from Ireland to help you choose.

Whether you get a comfortable wool throw or a cozy Aran sweater, these are the best souvenirs from Ireland.

Aran wool sweaters are world-renowned because they look good and do a great job at keeping you warm. They are durable and will serve as a long-lasting Irish souvenir thanks to being made with 100% Merino Wool.

Purchase this chic garment on Aran Island, where it got its name from, or at several Aran Sweater Market stores. It’s also available to buy on Amazon in a variety of colors. The version found on the island is usually more expensive since it’s typically bulkier and hand-sewn.

Where to buy: Irish retail outlets or on Amazon. Buy some of Ireland’s best when you choose Barry’s Tea .

While tea has traditionally been associated with the English, they don’t hold a monopoly over the hot drink. The Irish are also great tea lovers as well as incredible tea makers. Traditional Irish tea is typically reddish in color and has a malty flavor.

It’s one of the best gifts from Ireland for a tea lover or if you couldn’t get enough of their amazing tea.

15. Ireland-Themed Mugs

Irish Claddagh Mug

Where to buy: Irish retailers such as Carrolls Irish Gifts. You can also get them on Amazon. Choose from options such as this shamrock mug or this hearty cup donning a Claddagh ring.

Speaking of tea, you’ll need a mug to enjoy it in. And there’s no better way to enjoy Irish tea than in an Ireland-themed cup. Get one sporting your favorite Irish county, landmark, or any of the various national symbols.

Buy it as a gift for a tea enthusiast, someone from a specific county, or a general Ireland lover. They also serve as a great souvenir that showcases your affection for the nation or as memorabilia of your time there.

16. Irish Cheese

irish cheese

Where to buy: Purchase an Irish cheese assortment online or at local Irish dairy shops.

Ireland’s dairy industry is massive thanks to Irish cows producing high-quality milk, so you’ll want to try the delicious Ireland food of cheese. Irish producers have taken advantage of this by producing some of the most delectable cheeses you’re likely to taste. There are many to choose from, including Cashel Blue, Irish Cheddar, and Dubliner.

They have a distinct Irish taste found in both mass-produced and artisan cheese. Pair them with your favorite wine or slot them into a sandwich. They are a cool Irish gift to give to someone who’s never had a taste of Irish cheese.

If you’ve got a few days in Dublin , visit Sheridans Cheesemongers to get a taste of a number of cheeses.

The Best Souvenirs in Ireland

Wondering what to buy in Ireland that’s worth your attention? Ireland awaits with its glorious cliffs, the churn of the Atlantic, and a rich history that goes back to ancient times. Whether you’re taking a quick city break in Dublin or expanding your trip along the Wild Atlantic Way, you cannot go home without taking a piece of Ireland’s charm with you.

Luckily, the Irish know how to make the best souvenirs, with products ranging from fine whiskey to cosy sweaters and even marble. So, when you pack, make sure to save some room in your bag and put some money aside. It’s time to talk about what to buy in Ireland: the best Irish souvenirs.

Disclosure: on my most recent trip to Ireland, I travelled as part of a partnership with Globus: Ireland by Design. Some of the best souvenirs in Ireland that I’m recommending here came from that trip, a trip which introduced us to handmade goods and food through their YourChoice experiences. As ever, as always, I kept the right to write what I like. Otherwise, what’s the point?

Plan your own trip to Ireland

Ireland is a great country to travel around, either by yourself or with a group. Check out this week long Ireland itinerary over her e and discover what I thought about my trip with Globus vs when I travelled by myself.

Globus combine the best of both worlds with their tours: a group tour keeps prices affordable and provides lots of chances to meet likeminded people. But their flexible itineraries and ChoicesTouring concept mean that you can choose the activities which speak to you the most.

Ireland - ham and cheese counter in Galway for food souvenirs

Best Food Irish Souvenirs

The greatest thing about choosing food as a souvenir is that you get to spin out your trip just a little longer. Once you get home, you can sit back, pour yourself a glass of Irish whiskey and serve it with a slice of cheese and let the scent and taste remind you of all you’ve just seen.

Here’s what I can recommend you try…

best irish souvenirs - carrigaline original buttery cheese

Irish Cheese

With a land full of pastures, it’s not surprising that cheese is a big hit. One of the best Irish gifts you can get for loved ones is a full Irish cheese selection.

Cashel Blue tops the list as Ireland’s most popular cheese, with others close behind. One of my favourites is the Cnoc Dubh fresh goat cheese produced by Larry and Anne Maguire at their farm in Galway, so if you are on your way to see the Cliffs of Moher, make sure to stop here and grab some exceptional cheese for your return.

Irish Soda Bread

Irish soda bread is the staple of Irish food souvenir – and this is one you can actually learn to do when you’re there! Our Globus Choices Experience offered this as an option: locals teach you how to make the soda bread and then you get to take it with you afterwards!

You have to act fast, though. It only lasts for 3-4 days fresh. But it does go well with the cheese we just talked about. Just saying.

For a more intense aroma, try Irish brown bread while on your travels. It’s delicious.

Best Irish souvenirs - 40 tea bags Irish Breakfast Tea tin

Now, what scone or soda bread is complete without a cup of tea? Bring home Ireland’s passion for tea in a tin. Look out for Barry’s Tea, Lyons Tea, and Thompson’s Tea in supermarkets and souvenir shops. And a lovely unusual thing to do in Dublin involves heading to Bewley’s Café on Grafton Street.

Enjoy a cuppa and then stock up on tea, in bags or as loose leaf. Both are available.

Traditional Irish Whiskey

All across Ireland, you will find old whiskey distilleries, one older than the other, where you can learn more about the Irish culture of whiskey, sample some, and get a bottle to take back with you to serve on special occasions.

From the old to the new, the famous to the obscure, there is a distillery for everyone. Check out the ones we found on this 8 day Ireland itinerary.

Irish Cream Liqueur

If neat Irish whiskey is a touch too strong for your tastebuds, which it frequently is, you can combine Ireland’s passion for alcohol and dairy with a good old fashioned Irish cream liqueur.

Baileys is a popular brand, known all around the world, and you can pick it up at duty-free shops in airports as a last minute gift as well.

Irish chocolate

Irish Chocolate

Ready for a surprise? While Cadbury was founded in Birmingham, England, it’s the Cadbury’s chocolate made in Ireland which has the better flavour (according to, well, chocolate lovers.)

The secret ingredient is the milk. Whole, natural milk that comes from Irish cows and goes directly into the Cadbury chocolate bars. They make great gifts – and taste good, too.

But in case you’re looking for a truly, truly Irish souvenir, then chocolate can still be on your radar.

Look out for Wilde Irish Chocolates based in County Clare, and pick one (or more) from their 80 delicious assortments. They have everything, from chocolate bars to chocolate boxes and hot chocolate. Are there any better gifts from Ireland to be found?!

Irish Honey

With small farms dotted across the country, you’ll easily find places to buy high quality raw honey in Ireland. And since honey comes from bees and supporting bees supports biodiversity, it’s a tasty way to support sustainable tourism while you’re there.

Also, it is not uncommon for Irish farms that produce honey to also sell candles made with natural beeswax that will spread a gentle scent of honey around your house. Combine these Ireland souvenirs and bring home the aroma of the Irish bee farms.

Best Irish Souvenirs to Wear

Ireland has some pretty special clothing and jewellery items that are practical as well as beautiful. Forget comedy hats, these Irish souvenirs can be worn for years after your trip.

aran sweaters

Aran Sweaters

The best place to shop for Aran jumpers is, as expected, on the Aran Islands, where you can buy them directly from the local artisans. The tradition of these sweaters goes back centuries when the women on the Aran Islands started knitting them to keep their men warm as they went fishing. Each family had a special knitting pattern created of Celtic knots that made it easy to identify family members in case a tragedy lead to them drowning and being found months later.

An Aran wool sweater costs around £200, so it is not the cheapest souvenir to buy, but it is extremely durable and unique, which means you can wear it winter after winter without it wearing out.

However, take into account that, although today they are made with the softer merino wool, they are still a bit scratchy.

If you want to spend less and still have your Aran sweater, you can buy a machine-made one. The price drops considerably, but they still look quite traditional.

Also, you can go for a hat or a belt, which are easier to wear if you don’t feel too comfortable in wool.

Claddagh Ring

Believed to have originated in Galway city around 1700, Claddagh rings are today part of the Irish culture. Some mothers give them to their daughters as they come out of age, while lovers sometimes use them as engagement rings or even wedding rings.

A traditional Irish claddagh ring includes two hands grasping a heart with a crown above them. The heart symbolises love, the hands, friendship, and the crown, loyalty. But what’s truly interesting is that the way it is worn can tell you a lot about the wearer’s relationship status.

For example, if a person wears it on their right hand, with the heart facing away from their body, they are most likely single and still looking for love.

The ring can also be worn on the left hand. If it faces away from the body, the wearer is engaged, whilst if it is facing their body, they are married.

You can buy a gold or silver ring if you are getting ready to propose or simply go for a trinket if you want a nice souvenir without spending too much money.

Donegal Tweed

This material was first produced in Northern Ireland, but soon became popular all around the country. It is used for jackets, vests, caps, and other clothing items. The most famous region for producing it is County Donegal, but you won’t need to travel there to find it.

If you want to have something truly special to remind you of Ireland and are good with knitting, buy a ball of tweed and make yourself a beautiful vest once you get home.

For the rest of us, it probably makes sense to buy one pre-made…

Best Irish Souvenirs to Decorate Your Home

There are no better decorations than those that come with a story. If you like to travel a lot, you can pick up a blanket here, a painting there and have everything in your house remind you of your travels. And Ireland can supply a lot in this department.

waterford crystal

Waterford Crystal

Irish crystal produced at Waterford is renowned for its exceptional clarity and purity of colour. You can have it embedded into a piece of jewellery like a ring or a necklace or buy it as it is simply for its beauty.

Since you are about to pay good money for it, it is best to check you are buying the real deal. You can tell if you are looking at a genuine Waterford Crystal if you can spot the Waterford acid stamp on it. This is not always the easiest job, as the writing is tiny, so you may need a magnifying glass.

connemara marble

Connemara Marble

One of the best materials the Emerald Isle has produced is Connemara marble. Found only along the Wild Atlantic Way, it is considered extremely luxurious and special, designed to be used for grand buildings like the Galway Cathedral. Or it can be bought by the truly rich at about £200 per square meter.

However, you can bring a small piece of Connemara Marble with you to decorate your living room or buy a piece of jewellery that contains it.

Irish Linen

Think luxury, and you will understand why Irish linen is such a great souvenir. As other countries hurried to replace the fibres found in the flax plants with cheaper, synthetic fibres, in Ireland, many manufacturers continued to produce linen, a deluxe material that was used to create the Egyptian pharaohs’ bed sheets in ancient times.

Irish linen is known for its resilience and soft feel. You just need to decide what you need it for. New drapes, bedsheets, or simply a handkerchief?

Irish souvenirs - hand made pottery

Irish Pottery

From traditional designs to innovative shapes and decorations, Irish pottery provides some amazingly unique gifts to buy while in Ireland. If you hit County Kilkenny on your Ireland itinerary, stop by the studio of Andrew Ludick to discover his works inspired by the artwork of Paul Klee and indigenous African art.

Great Irish pottery is also produced in Dingle, where you can find Louis Mulcahy’s workshop and products ranging from homeware to garden pots and urns.

Ireland - teach yourself Irish whistle book

Musical Instruments

If you want to buy some unique Irish souvenirs, why not go for a traditional Irish bagpipe (also known as the Uilleann pipes) or a fiddle to remind you of the great music you’ve listened to here? They can look great if exposed in the right room, and you can even give them a try once in a while to the delight (or horror) of your neighbours.

Ramp things up further with an Irish whistle or take the more sensible route and just buy a CD in which the professionals show how its doen.

Guinness Pint Glass

One of the best things to do in Dublin is to visit the Guinness Factory and learn more about this part of Irish history. You can savour a pint of Guinness right on the premises and, as you end your tour, you will discover a lovely gift shop that overflows with Guinness souvenirs. You’ll find everything from T shirts and aprons to snow globes and bottle openers, but many visitors go for a pint glass they can reuse with the Guinness they then buy at home.

irish wool blankets

Irish Wool Blankets

A perfect souvenir for many winters to come, an Irish wool blanket will keep you warm and toasty and remind you of your travels. Made from natural wool and dyed in natural colours, they make the perfect gift for a home that needs a bit of warmth. And isn’t that all of us these days?!

They tend to be quite large, though, so make sure to save enough space in your luggage. Or you can have them shipped home, as many Irish stores offer this possibility.

An Irish Cookbook

Will this be the first time you try a colcannon or an Irish stew? Buy an Irish cookbook and try the recipes at home. They are pretty simple in their essence, so you should have no problem cooking them to perfection, even if you have average cooking skills. And a lot of patience.

Irish souvenir - Cead Mile Failte

Best Irish Souvenirs for Your Mind and Soul

How can we talk about Ireland without talking about books, music, and art? It is a wonderful thing to visit the home of a great writer or artist and then buy one of their works right there on the spot. From then on, every time you read it, listen to it, or simply look at it, you will think back at the moment you bought it.

Books of Irish Authors

As one of UNESCO’s Cities of Literature, books must be high on a list of gifts to bring back from Ireland.

Make the first stop Trinity College in Dublin, the educational establishment for Samuel Beckett, Jonathan Swift, Oscar Wilde, and Bram Stoker, among many others. You can either walk through by yourself, take an erudite tour that includes the famous Book of Kells, or follow the tour that Globus picked out for us join a literary pub crawl instead.

Within the premises, you will find a bookstore where you can shop for books by Trinity alumni.

Elsewhere in Dublin, enjoy dusty bookshelves and brightly lit hubs and don’t miss a trip to the James Joyce Centre.

Irish Music

If you are a big fan of Irish music, you can take some CDs back with you and support local artists. Sure, U2 and The Cranberries are all on Amazon Music and Spotify, but it’s nice to support rural musicians and to help keep the beat alive outside the corporations.

Original Art

There are plenty of art galleries in Dublin and across Ireland but one of the best is The Design Shop in Dublin. Run by two women who fell in love with local design, you can find print art and everything from Irish Turf Fire candles to handmade jewellery created on the site.

Ireland - wacky woolies sheep rubiks cube souvenirs

Other Irish Souvenirs You Can Buy

And then, there are the fun Irish souvenirs. The gifts from Ireland that can make you wince or make you smile. Often further down the budget scale, here some more ideas for souvenir shopping in Ireland…

magnets

Portable and personal, you can find a magnet for every occasion in Ireland. Shamrock magnets are a great choice as they bring good luck to the person who receives it. Apparently.

crystal mugs

Quite frankly, there can never be too many mugs in a house.

And fortunately, you can find some really gorgeous mugs in Ireland at accessible prices. And you can find some, er, kitschier ones.

Mugs with leprechauns, mugs with shamrocks, mugs with the map of Ireland. Guinness mugs, Trinity College mugs… the list keeps on going. Pick one that will remind you of your favourite place or experience and drink from it without shame!

I know this sounds so dated. Why buy a postcard when you can pick up a mug or a magnet instead?

If you simply walk into a shop, buy a set of postcards, and shove them into your bag, this is boring.

But what if you send the card to your address and come home to receive news from Ireland? Or, what if you frame it? Some postcards are beautiful and extremely inexpensive. You will have a nice, personal souvenir, and some money left for other activities.

Christmas Gifts

We have a treasured tradition in our household of picking up a tree decoration wherever we go. It’s surprising how many you can find and then rediscover when it’s time to put up a Christmas tree each year. If you travel during the winter holidays, you will find many Christmas fairs where you can buy all sorts of traditional Irish gifts, from toys to handmade jewellery and sweets.

But don’t worry if you travel earlier in the year: The Guinness Factory stocks these from September.

Tips for Buying the Best Souvenirs in Ireland

Trips can sometimes be busy. You need to deal with accommodation, car rental, tour booking, ticket shopping, etc. Not to mention that you will hit a lot of attractions in a short time. It may be tricky to deal with souvenir shopping at the same time, so check out these tips to make sure you don’t forget something important.

Know What You Want to Bring Home from Ireland

Make a list of all the souvenirs you want to buy, including the items your friends and family requested. Then, do a bit of research to find where you can buy them, as some may require special stops on your itinerary.

You don’t need to completely change your trip, but you can make small adjustments before it starts.

Reserve an Irish Souvenir Budget

Once you have the list, you can take a look online at prices. If you want to buy expensive gifts, you will need to put some money aside for them. Handmade objects are usually pricey, so, as I have already mentioned, be prepared to pay good money for a traditional Irish jumper.

Irish souvenirs - colourful sheep toys

Look for Quality

Trinkets are fun, and you can find yourself buying a lot of them since they are everywhere and inexpensive. However, once you get home, you will realise that not all of them are worth exposing, and some will end up cluttering your drawers. Try to stick to 2 to 3 more expensive items you know you will cherish over and over again. It’s another part of being a responsible tourist.

Consider Shipping

If you are doing a tour of the country and travelling by bus or train, bringing expensive pottery or fragile items with you is risky. Imagine how careful you would have to be with your bag, always looking to keep it on your lap. This quickly becomes annoying.

Fortunately, many Irish shops can and will ship your goods home. Even if you are going to pay extra for the shipping, you can rest assured your souvenirs will get home intact while you can enjoy the trip without thinking about them.

Check the Regs

There are not too many restrictions when it comes to getting souvenirs out of Ireland. But, check with any transit countries and your home country about bringing food in with you.

Most Popular Souvenirs from Ireland

1 aran sweater/jumper.

When it comes to souvenirs of Ireland, none is more iconic than the traditional Aran sweater/jumper or cardigan.

Referred to locally as an Aran jumper, this style of sweater’s name (jersey or pullover are other terms for this clothing garment) comes from the Aran Islands off the West Coast of Ireland. It is made from thick, off-white wool with cable patterns in the body and sleeves.

Originally Aran jumpers were made from unscoured wool that retailed its natural oils which gave it water resistance, meaning they could even be worn outdoors in the worst of the Irish weather, a must for the fishing and farming communities.

The undyed cream-coloured báinín (pronounced bawn-neen) wool is yarn produced from sheep’s wool. Aran knitting is believed to have originated in the late 19 th century and may have roots tied to Guernsey jumpers which have similar patterns, usually on the yoke.

There are also some myths attached to the patterns in Aran jumpers. Each fisherman’s family had a unique stitch or pattern associated with the family name so if a fisherman was lost at sea, he could be identified by the pattern on his jumper.

Different stitches have different meanings or importance associated with them.

  • Basket – Represented the fisherman’s basket and his hopes of filling it with his catches.
  • Tree of Life/Trinity – This is said to promise long life and strong children.
  • Trellis – Symbolic of the landscape of Ireland and its fenced-in fields.
  • Blackberry – Symbolic of the rich abundance of nature.
  • Honeycomb – A reminder of the bee who works hard and is rewarded for its labour.
  • Irish Moss – This is often used as a diamond filler and suggests a respectable harvest. It symbolises the carrageen moss seaweed found along the Irish coastline, often used as a fertiliser and food.
  • Diamond – Symbolises the shapes of the mesh in fishing nets and stands for success and wealth.
  • Cable – The most frequently found pattern on Aran jumpers is the cable stitch. A plain cable represents the fisherman’s ropes promising good luck and safety at sea. And a plated stitch represents daily life and hard work intertwined.
  • Zig Zag – Represents the ups and downs of married life.

ireland tourist gifts

Whether you want to find a stitch that has a meaning, or you simply like the appearance of an Aran jumper, ensure you buy one that you will love.

Be prepared for high prices too, especially if the jumper is 100% handmade or made by a handloom. Machine-knitted Aran jumpers will not be as expensive but their quality may be less than handmade or hand-loom-knitted jumpers.

And remember, as with everything, if the prices seem too good to be true, then it probably is and the jumper may not be a genuine Aran jumper or has been machine-made from lesser-quality yarn.

Buy your Aran jumper on Amazon HERE .

And remember, woolens made from Aran wool/yarn are not limited to sweaters. You can buy cardigans, ponchos, and even hat and scarf sets.

2 Wool Blankets and Throws

Next on your list of the best gifts to buy in Ireland should be wool blankets and throws.

These come in all shapes and sizes, but the best ones are made from wool, be it merino wool, lambswool or cashmere. There are even Aran throws and blankets that will keep you nice and toasty on a cold winter’s day.

Most will be of a plain or checked design and come in a range of colours. These can be a beautiful gift to give someone from Ireland.

And as with Aran jumpers, quality will come with a price tag but will be worth it as it will last longer than cheaper imitations.

Some of the best Irish blankets and throws come from the Avoca range , but there is also a great range available through Amazon.

3 Claddagh Ring

One of the most unique souvenirs from Ireland is a Claddagh ring. A well-known Celtic symbol in Ireland , this traditional Irish ring represents love, loyalty and friendship, through the heart, crown and hands respectively.

The design and customs associated with it originate from the small fishing village in Galway of the same name.

The design was first produced in the 17 th century and can be found in rings, bracelets, and necklaces. The rings can be used as friendship rings, or as engagement and wedding rings.

How it is worn by the bearer shows the relationship status of the bearer.

  • The right hand with the heart pointing out to the fingertips denotes the person is single and might be looking for love.
  • The right hand with the heart pointing towards the wrist denotes the person is in a relationship.
  • The left hand with the heart pointing towards the fingertips denotes the person is engaged.
  • The left hand with the heart pointing towards the wrist denotes the person is married.

The most iconic place to buy your Claddagh ring in Ireland is Thomas Dillions in Galway which has been making Claddagh rings since 1750.

If you cannot wait until you visit Ireland to get one, you can order online from Thomas Dillions.

Amazon also has a range of Claddagh-style rings. Click here to see more .

4 Irish Whiskey and Gin

If you are going to visit Ireland, you might pay a visit to one of the Irish whiskey distilleries dotted around the country. There are also some gin distilleries worth visiting as well.

And if you are going to visit one, you will probably enjoy a tasting session at the end of the tour. You may end up purchasing something there, or you could wait until you get to the airport to avail yourself of duty-free shopping.

Some of the best whiskeys from the Republic of Ireland include Jameson, Teeling and Paddy, while some of the top souvenirs from Northern Ireland are whiskeys from the famous Bushmills.

Look out for limited edition, 15+ years aged whiskey and gift sets which include smaller bottles of a few varieties from a particular brand or distillery.

If you don’t want to be lugging around bottles of whiskey, there is a huge range of Irish whiskeys available to buy in Dublin Airport.

5 Galway or Waterford Crystal

One of the best places to visit in Ireland is Waterford City and you cannot visit the city without going to the headquarters of Waterford Crystal to see how the famous glass is made.

Although not all Waterford Crystal is made in Ireland, the tour gives an insight into the history of the crystal works and how pieces are made.

Waterford Crystal is one of the top souvenirs from Ireland and in our family is a traditional wedding gift we give to a newly married couple who already own their own house and don’t provide a gift list.

It doesn’t come cheap but that is to be expected for such a long-standing, prestigious brand. Items available include crystal glasses, clocks, picture frames, vases, decanters, and more.

Amazon has a comprehensive range of Waterford Crystal HERE .

See the range of Galway Crystal HERE .

6 Irish Bog Oak

One of the best souvenirs to buy in Ireland is genuine Irish Bog Oak.

Bog Oak is a natural material formed from trees thousands of years ago in the boglands of Ireland. Trees became engulfed by bog and were preserved due to the low oxygen atmosphere of the peat.

This preserved material is recovered and dried for two years before undergoing carving and polishing to produce some amazing pieces, of which we currently own two.

These carvings and sculptures come certified with the estimated age of the Bog Oak, typically dating back thousands of years. These pieces are stunning and also make great wedding presents.

My go-to place for Bog Oak pieces is the Celtic Roots Studio . This is a small, family-run business located in County Westmeath that has a collection readily available online for purchase and can make bespoke pieces. You will not go wrong with a Celtic Roots Bog Oak piece on your mantelpiece.

7 Irish Linen and Lace

One of the things you can only buy in Ireland if you want the best quality of it is Irish Linen.

Irish linen products are made from cloth woven from flax fibre, which was grown in Ireland for many years before advanced agricultural methods and more favourable climates saw its cultivation move to Northern Europe.

Irish linen products include tea towels, table cloths, handkerchiefs, and other products and are a beautiful gift to bring back from Ireland.

This, yet again, is another great wedding gift idea if you are looking to give a newlywed couple something from Ireland.

If you would like to check out one of the best places for Irish Linen, consult the Thomas Ferguson Irish Linen company online , which has been operating and producing Irish linen for over 150 years.

8 Newbridge Silverware

One of my favourite types of souvenirs in Ireland is Newbridge Silverware. Established over 80 years ago, Newbridge Silverware produces silver jewellery, homeware, and tableware at their manufacturing facility in Newbridge, County Kildare.

There is also a visitor centre at the facility where visitors can take a tour to learn about the skills required to produce beautiful pieces and collections.

There is also a museum that has collections including fashion collections and artefacts belonging to fashion icons such as Princess Diana, Audrey Hepburn and Marilyn Monroe.

Whether you choose a set of steak knives, a piece of jewellery, or something else, this is a piece of Ireland that you will love.

A tradition in our house, which my mother started and that is now continued by one of my sisters, is that our son receives a new Newbridge Silverware Christmas decoration each year. These are beautiful reminders each year of Christmases past when we put our tree up every year.

See some Newbridge Silverware products HERE on Amazon .

9 Donegal Tweed

Another great souvenir from Ireland that is unique is Donegal Tweed. Originally handwoven but now machine woven, Donegal Tweed can be found in caps, hats, suits, and other products.

Magee is one of the producers of the finest Donegal Tweed, founded over 150 years ago, and their clothing is worn by the current President of Ireland, Michael D Higgins.

10 Connemara Marble

One of the best souvenirs Ireland has to offer for the home is Connemara Marble . This green, rare Irish marble is found only in the Connemara region of Ireland. It is used in decorations and as a gemstone due to its distinct green colouration.

Genuine Connemara Marble pieces come with a certificate of authenticity and products include coasters, jewellery featuring gems from Connemara Marble, and religious gifts, to name but a few. There is a range of Connemara Marble souvenirs available on Amazon here .

11 Irish Pottery and Ceramics

Another lovely souvenir from Ireland to get is some Irish pottery or ceramics. Whether you want a fancy teapot, or simply a mug or two, some Irish pottery or ceramics will be a lovely addition to any home.

One of the most famous Irish pottery brands is Belleek. Established more than 160 years ago in County Fermanagh, Belleek produces the finest china and pottery including tableware, homeware, and other gifts. Each piece is handmade with skill and craftsmanship handed down through generations.

Belleek Pottery also has a visitor centre that runs tours of the facility.

12 Bodhráns and Irish Whistles

A unique Irish souvenir to buy on your visit to Ireland is a traditional bodhrán.

A bodhrán is a traditional Irish Celtic frame drum that is beaten either with the hand or a tipper, originally a double-ended knuckle bone but now fashioned from wood, typically ash, holly, or hickory wood. These are fun souvenirs to bring back from Ireland.

Similarly, an Irish whistle, also known as a tin whistle, is another fun musical instrument souvenir to buy in Ireland. We recently made the mistake of agreeing to our son buying one and now have to listen to him ‘practising’ it.

Food souvenirs from Ireland

One thing I always do when I go home to see the family is stock up on my favourite food souvenirs from Ireland.

Ok, some of my choices may not be for everyone but there are certain things only found in Ireland that I simply must have in my bags when returning to Portugal.

I have been known to travel with an empty hold bag just so I can fill it with my food favourites. The night before my flight I pop to the supermarkets and stock up. And it is always a struggle to fit it all in.

The following foods from Ireland are just some of the items I bring back with me after every trip.

15 Irish Tea

I have been living away from Ireland for a while now and in all that time I have only drunk Irish tea, thanks to stocking up when back in Ireland, or more recently to what is known in our family as “care packages”.

Our house is a Lyons tea house. Some households prefer Barrys, and Bewleys makes a lovely cup of tea, but for us, it has to be Lyons.

I buy (or receive) both caffeinated and decaffeinated Lyons teabags. The decaf is for after 7 pm at night!

16 Irish Soda Bread

There is nothing like the taste of real Irish butter spread thickly on a slice of Irish soda bread and I always bring back a loaf or two to enjoy with my family after a trip to Ireland.

Whether it is my personal favourite, McCambridge, or good old Brennan’s, nothing beats Irish soda bread. It even goes great with a bowl of soup!

17 Butlers Chocolate

We are lucky that we can get Cadbury’s chocolate near us in Portugal but one chocolate I tend to purchase in Dublin Airport before I depart Ireland is Butlers Chocolate.

Whether it is a few bars or a tray of chocolates, some item from Butlers makes its way into my shopping. And I often buy these as gifts for friends when I can.

18 Mikado and Kimberly Biscuits

My all-time favourite biscuit is Mikado Biscuits. Also called Jam Mallows in the UK, these are soft biscuit bases with two lengths of pink mallow and jam running down the centre, topped with sprinkles of coconut.

Meanwhile, my husband’s favourites are Kimberley Biscuits. These consist of two soft gingery round biscuits sandwiching a soft mallow centre. There are also chocolate-covered varieties of this with both the traditional soft mallow centre and one with salted caramel included on the mallow. Both are best served with a cup of Irish tea.

19 Irish Crisps

The majority of the food items i buy in ireland to bring back with me are crisps or potato chips. they are varieties only available in ireland and include (but are not limited to):.

  • Tayto Cheese & Onion
  • Hunky Dorys (all flavours)

And I will also try to squeeze in a few 6-packs of Manhattan Popcorn, THE best popcorn on the planet.

20 Ballymaloe Relish

A condiment that often makes its way into my luggage is Ballymaloe Relish.

Made by the Ballymaloe Foods Business in County Cork, this relish is delicious with burgers, steaks, chips and barbeque foods. I try to remember to pop a bottle or two into my shopping the night before I leave Ireland.

You can shop for most of these Irish food items on the Food Ireland website. Click here to head there now !

In addition to this, I usually pop into Wrights of Howth in Dublin airport and buy some packs of Irish breakfast ingredients including sausages, bacon, and black and white pudding and a side of Irish Smoked Salmon.

It’s not a cheap visit but so worth it when we team up our full Irish breakfast with a cup of Lyons tea and a few slices of soda bread. Yum.

If you are looking for the best Ireland souvenirs that won’t break the bank, then here are a few ideas.

21 Guinness memorabilia

Guinness is a name long associated with Ireland and among Guinness souvenirs, you will find coasters, bottle openers, hats, mugs, sweaters, and more.

These can be bought in many souvenir shops including Carroll’s and the shops in Dublin Airport.

22 Leprechaun souvenirs

I dare you to go to Ireland and not come away with at least one leprechaun-themed souvenir.

From soft, leprechaun toys to tea towels, notebooks, and more, there are always some leprechaun souvenirs to buy in Ireland.

23 Postcards

If you love postcards, then make sure to pick up some while you travel around Ireland . These can be bought in souvenir shops and most post offices (An Post) will have them as well.

24 An Irish Fairy Door

A fun and unique souvenir to bring home from Ireland, especially if you have kids is an Irish Fairy Door .

These fun little doors can be placed on any wall in your home, or in your garden, to allow an Irish fairy to come live in your home. As well as doors there are lots of accessories you can buy alongside your fairy door. Be warned, you might go a little mad.

We’ve had an Irish Fairy Door since our son was two years old and the magic of having one is just priceless.

View the range of Irish Fairy Door Company products HERE on Amazon .

25 Wacky Woolies

This Irish brand of souvenirs is a fun brand that is easily identified thanks to the brightly coloured sheep that depict items in the range.

Everything from tea towels to mugs, notebooks, drinks bottles, travel pillows, and more. We own a few Wacky Woolies items as I’ve picked up a few things both in Dublin Airport and on ferries from Wales to Ireland.

Surprisingly, you also purchase Wacky Woolies souvenirs on Amazon. Click here to browse the range .

26 A book from Trinity College

Another idea for things to buy from Ireland that won’t cost a lot is a book from Trinity College, one of Dublin’s top places to visit.

If you are going to see the Book of Kells, then pick up a book in the gift shop. There are a variety of books, from Irish history to children’s storybooks and none cost too much.

During a weekend in Dublin last year I visited the Book fo Kells and got the book pictured below to read with my son.

27 Irish Peat Incense Burner

One of the best unique Ireland souvenirs that will transport you back to the Emerald Isle is an Irish peat incense burner.

These little ceramic cottages (or pubs) come with an incense stone burner and small pieces of turf to burn. You light the turf (peat), place it on the stone and put the cottage/pub over the stone.

Then simply sit back and enjoy the unique aroma of Ireland.

You cannot always find these in souvenir shops in Ireland but when you see one, pick it up.

We had one in Wales but it got lost during our house moves. But, my sister-in-law found one when she was on a weekend in Galway and kindly picked it up and brought it over to us. Memories have been invoked every time we light it.

And surprisingly, Amazon has one for sale. You can buy it HERE .

28 Celtic Design Scarf

When it comes to things to get from Ireland as souvenirs for family and friends, a simply Celtic design scarf is a great option.

You can find these budget-friendly items in most souvenir shops. This particular one I bought both myself and a friend were in the gift shop at Clonmacnoise and cost just €15 each.

29 Handmade Irish Prints

I stumbled upon a stall in the George’s Street Arcade on my last trip to Ireland that was selling handmade prints of Irish landscapes and famous Irish landmarks .

These were not expensive, starting from just €10 each and some were limited edition as well.

I had a hard time choosing my favourites but chose 5 and brought them home with me as a souvenir of my last visit to the Emerald Isle.

One of the artists was the stall owner and we had such a lovely conversation. I can highly recommend stopping at this stall at the entrance to George’s Street and picking up a few prints on your next visit to Dublin.

30 An Irish Cookbook

If you are looking to buy souvenirs from Ireland that will get lots of use, then pick up an Irish cookbook.

You can find Irish cookbooks and recipe books in most gift shops and all Irish bookstores. Check out the ranges in both Easons and any WHSmith you stumble upon.

31 Fridge Magnets

If you are travelling to Ireland on a budget and are wondering what things to bring back from Ireland that isn’t expensive, then you won’t go wrong with some fridge magnets.

Fridge magnets are something my family has collected from every destination we have visited, be it in Ireland or elsewhere, and our fridge door is covered.

Fridge magnets are inexpensive, don’t take up much room, and can also be gifted to family and friends. They typically only cost a few euros and almost every souvenir shop and tourist attraction gift shop in Ireland sells them.

Tips for buying the best souvenirs in Ireland

Here are a few tips to help you make the right choices when buying your souvenirs in Ireland.

Where to buy your souvenirs – The best place to buy souvenirs in Ireland of a specific type is the main outlets associated with the brand. Think the Newbridge factory in Kildare, Claddagh rings from Thomas Dillions in Galway, or Donegal Tweed from Magee’s. If there are official stores in shopping centres and malls under the brand name or section within department stores, then you are sure you are getting the genuine article.

If you are after souvenirs from Dublin, Ireland the best place to visit is one of the Carrolls Irish Gift stores. If I am in Dublin City Centre I will pop into the store on Henry Street, Grafton Street, or Westmoreland Street for a browse. It is not often I come away empty-handed!

Ship fragile items home – If you are buying fragile souvenirs, then consider shipping the item home rather than chancing it in your luggage. Large items may incur excess baggage weight and you don’t want to get home and find your expensive Waterford Crystal glasses have shattered thanks to careless baggage handlers. So, consider shipping fragile items home.

Plan your purchases – Plan your purchases before you go and try and allow a budget. That way you will stick to a few items and won’t come home to any nasty credit card bills. Decide what you would like to buy on your trip, and where to buy it, and set an upper limit. Allow a bit extra for unplanned, absolute must-haves but try not to go mad, as hard as it may be.

Allow room (and weight) in your luggage – You should allow both room and weight in your luggage for any souvenirs you plan to buy during your visit to Ireland. Leave plenty of room if you are planning to buy Aran jumpers or wool blankets as they will take up quite a bit of space.

Quality is worth paying for – When planning your souvenir purchases, make sure you are prepared to pay for quality. Cheap will not always pay off in the long run and if you want genuine, Irish, handmade souvenirs, they will come with a price tag that reflects these qualities. By all means add a few cheap, fun souvenirs to your shopping list. But for items you want to have for many years, be prepared to pay for them.

Check import and duty regulations – Make sure to check the import and duty regulations for anything you want to bring home BEFORE you purchase it. You cannot bring certain items into certain countries and it is best to check before you make any purchases. Check the TSA regulations for what you can bring back to the US HERE .

Remember to avail of Duty-free shopping – Remember to claim your VAT back at the refund counter in the airport before your return flight home. Tax-free applies to purchases over €75 and can be applied for at the airport with your receipts. Find more information here . You can also get a Fexco Horizon Card which can help make your refund claim at the airport quicker. Find information about this card  here .

Can you provide a rough estimate of how much a sweater would cost?

It will very much depend on where you buy your sweater as your Irish souvenir and the level of details that has gone into it. For example, at Kilkenny Design, Aran sweaters can cost upwards of €95 ( https://kilkennydesign.com/women/clothing/sweaters ). On Carrolls, another popular site for Irish souvenirs to buy whether you are in Ireland or ordering from abroad, Aran sweaters start from €55 for both men and women ( https://www.carrollsirishgifts.com/aran-knitwear/?start=0&sz=24 ).

Hi Cath, Just thought I would reach out to you as I just finished reading your gift ideas article….I would like to introduce my range of Irish designed and printed postcards designed and printed here in Galway where I am from. I designed the range and am currently looking to branch into magnets and have just sourced an Irish supplier who will make them for me…All my postcards, prints and soon magnets are from here…..finally an alternative to the mass produced Chineese products flooding the Irish Market…. I am also a member of Guaranteed Irish which I am delighted to be a member of and brand all my range with the logo to show authenticity …. have a look at http://www.yoloprint.com . My range is bespoke and created specifically to the part of the country they are being sold in….. I hope you enjoy my products and if you deem worthy help spread the word…regards Mike Fitzpatrick

What to buy in Ireland for the home

Among the popular Irish items people love to look for when visiting Ireland, the Avoca throws probably sum up all the culture and tradition you should look for while shopping.

The original mill is located in Avoca and has been working there since 1723 . What once was a small local business has since then become a huge international brand. They sell wonderful scarves , wraps , socks and knitwear in vibrant colors that celebrate the Irish countryside.

Throws and blankets are a particularly loved souvenirs from Ireland: if you visit the head office in Kilmacanogue they often have lots of stuff on sale. Nowadays you can find Avoca products all over Ireland and also online but prices are higher.

Irish linen is also very much loved and slightly less expensive . If you’re shopping in Ireland, make sure to look for tablecloths , handkerchiefs and lace , but check that they’re made in Ireland!

While shopping for souvenirs from Ireland, we found lots of interesting stuff at Blarney Woolen Mills . The store is located in Blarney, super close to the famous castle and not too far away from Cork. Usually they have a section of items on sale : always check that one first!

If you’ve been reading this blog for a while, by now you’ll know I’m (not-so) slightly obsessed with my mugs collection . Guess what? Mugs and pottery are among my favorite Ireland souvenirs!

As usual, you will find quite a nice collection of Irish mugs at Starbucks . I found them a bit more expensive than the usual Starbucks mugs I’ve been buying all over Europe, but if you have a themed collection, they’ll do the trick. My suggestion is to also look for hand painted mugs .

Irish pottery and ceramics are famous all over the world. You might know it as Belleek pottery , glazed porcelain made in Ireland that has been used by Queen Victoria, the Prince of Wales, as well as by many dignitaries from all over the world.

While you shouldn’t expect Belleek to be cheap, I’m also thinking that buying Irish China means you should have it shipped at home . Some stores offer to wrap every item carefully and ship the parcel for you. Others will wrap it and hand it over. Buy it if you have some space left in your carry-on: don’t absolutely put Belleek in your checked baggage because no matter what, it’ll be destroyed!

Silver housewares are also great souvenirs from Ireland. One of the oldest and most popular factories is Newbridge Silverware . They sell items like silver plated photo frames , trays , cutlery and stainless steel kitchenware at their Visitor Center.

This showroom houses all the Newbridge Silverware products and offers the chance to attend a factory tour. Tickets will cost you 12€ (children under 12 can visit for free ) and tours are available from Monday to Sunday ( 11:30 am , 2 pm and 3 pm ). The Newbridge Silverware factory is located in Kildare.

Dublin paintings and prints are good souvenirs from Ireland that you can hang on your walls. A lovely memento of your Europe trip: you can also use it to decorate a travel-themed room!

There are a number shops in Dublin, Cork and in many other big cities in Ireland that sell vintage-looking posters . Yet if you can fit it safely in your luggage, I suggest you also have a look at the beautiful paintings sold by local artists. It would be one of the sustainable gifts from Ireland you can buy for someone else or for your own house.

Aldo loves to buy license plates wherever we go, so he can hang them on the wall when we get back home. We’ve been to Ireland quite a few times already but he wasn’t able to find actual license plates, so instead he bought a hand painted wooden sign with a super cute leprechaun on it.

Wooden signs are quite popular and one of the creative Irish gifts you can buy for your own house. Some artists, especially in the smaller villages, can customize your sign by writing a special quote or your name on it!

Gifts from Ireland – Clothing and accessories

All the fashionistas out there will love this chapter. I’m going to list the top things to buy in Ireland that you should look for on your next trip! We’ll go from the traditional Irish clothing to the modern stuff you can buy for just a few Euros.

Let me start by discussing the super popular Irish Aran wool knits . The Aran islands, off the West coast of Ireland, are a bit like Isle of Skye in Scotland , and they can be added to a Connemara road trip if you do have a few more days to spare.

The traditional villages live off tourism and still preserve the old techniquest to make hand-knitted sweaters , shawls , hats and a special kind of jumper. If you don’t have the Aran jumper on your list of souvenirs from Ireland, by all means, make sure you add it!

We’re talking of a particular kind of cardigan that was traditionally white in colour and with cable patterns on the body and sleeves. Nowadays you can find Aran jumpers and cardigans also in different colors, but people still appreciate the white ones, because they’re made from an undyed cream-colored kind of sheep’s wool. The Irish Aran wool knits can be expensive but they’re definitely worth their price!

If you’re going to do some shopping in Ireland, you’re bound to see a lot of Irish leather products. Leather goods production in Ireland has in fact a long tradition: it’s not “ touristy “, it’s an art that they have refined for the longest time.

Usually the Irish leather goods are expensive souvenirs. There’s no way that you can find “ cheap ” leather products. If you do, either you’re very lucky, or you’re being scammed!

The fact is that in Ireland (it’s the same in Florence if you’ve ever been there) they use only the best leather: this is not just a souvenir but an object that will stay for you for the longest time .

The least expensive leather products that we found in Ireland were tiny metal frame purses . They came for about 10€ . Usually the farther away you go from the touristy areas, the less leather products will cost you.

My favorite Ireland souvenirs, when it comes to leather goods, are bags , purses and wallets . Yet I’ve also seen gloves , satchels , messenger bags and lovely coin purses .

On my first trip to Ireland I bought a pair of beautiful marble earrings that I still have to this day… over 15 years later. I absolutely love them.

Connemara marble is Ireland’s most ancient gemstone. This is one of the rarest forms of marble in the world: some deposits date back to 600 million years! It’s widely used to make awesome jewelry that is sold basically everywhere in Ireland.

When we roadtripped the Irish East coast, we found quite a lot of workshops that sold beautiful jewellery from local artists . My earrings for example were made by two awesome Irish girls who funded their trips by designing and selling earrings, necklaces and rings. Girl power!

Those who are in love with jewellery could also buy a Celtic stone necklace : the designs usually include Celtic knots and shamrocks.

Girl enjoying the day in a flowy purple dress in the Irish countryside

Irish crystal is pretty popular, but it’s also important to know that most of the Waterford crystal is now produced outside of Ireland (Slovenia, Hungary, Czech Republic, etc.).

This doesn’t change the fact that crystal jewellery is one of the best things to buy in Ireland. Yet I think it’s important to know that they are able to keep the prices accessible now only by outsourcing to other Countries.

Wherever you go in Ireland, you’ll find lots and lots of necklaces , rings and earrings . While you can choose among several kinds of crystals, stones and even marble, there’s one thing you should always check: is it really silver ?

I’m allergic to nickel and it’s pretty common: I’m sure you don’t want to spend your holidays scratching that awful rash, right? Even if you’re not too sure about a possible allergy, always buy nickel free or silver jewellery . Just in case!

At the beginning of this chapter I mentioned modern Irish clothing you can buy as a souvenir. Well, a lot of people love to buy official football and rugby shirts ! Together with tons of beer hoodies and baseball hats , they are the kind of Irish souvenirs that can be affordable, easy to carry and also useful.

On one of our trips, Aldo bought a very nice hoodie in Ireland. It wasn’t only souvenir: the temperatures were so low that he needed heavier clothes!  The hoodie he bought in Ireland is still the softest, thickest one he owns! Who said you can’t wear your own souvenirs?

Lovely view of a fishing boat near a creek in Ireland

Best souvenirs from Ireland for the foodies

The foodies visiting Ireland will feel super bad in knowing they won’t be able to bring back a pint or two of Irish beef and Guinness stew . I know the feeling, believe me!

The best way to try and replicate the Irish flavours at home is to buy a gift for yourself: buy an Irish cookbook ! It’s among the very best souvenirs from Ireland, especially if you find one that includes the traditional recipes . Not many people know, but you can even cook the original Irish soda bread on your own (it wouldn’t survive a long flight, and it can’t be imported in many Countries). What’s better than a themed dinner with your friends or family to talk about your trip to Ireland?

As usual, before to get excited about the following Irish souvenir ideas, make sure you check with customs if you can bring them back! If the answer is yes, then keep reading, I have a few tips for you!

When a friend of mine moved to Ireland, he kept on raving about Irish cheese . Cheddar , in particular. He couldn’t believe there were so many different kinds of Cheddar cheese, because it’s not something we’re used to, in Italy.

Irish cheddar cheese is absolutely a great souvenir from Ireland, but it’s not the only cheese you should try and bring back home. Did you know that Cashel Blue is Irish? The first farmhouse was opened in Tipperary!

Another fresh delicacy you will probably eat a lot in Ireland is salmon. While you can’t bring back home some Irish roasted salmon (whenever we discuss salmon, Aldo mourns the “ delicious salmon I ate in Ireland “, it’s that memorable!), you can, and should, buy some smoked salmon .

A good slice of Cashel Blue from Ireland with figues and nuts

But while these are very interesting ideas for yummy souvenirs from Ireland, how can you reduce all the hassle?

Well, while buying them at the closest supermarket might be cheaper, the best option is to buy all the fresh stuff you want at the airport. That way you’ll be able to keep everything in a separate bag, and you can bring it on the plane as some sort of “ extra “. Besides, it’ll be fresh so it will survive longer!

The ones with a sweet tooth – and that includes me – will find it very difficult not to fill their carry-on with fudge and chocolate bars .

Candy and chocolate are perfect Irish souvenirs because they won’t bother you if you put them in your checked luggage, everyone will like them, and they’re not liquid so you can also enjoy them as a snack on your flight home.

You can buy the best Irish chocolate at Wilde Irish Chocolates in Tuamgraney, County Clare. Here they will even let you make your own chocolate bar : it’s the perfect customized souvenir from Ireland you could ever think of!

At Wilde Irish Chocolates you can also take a factory tour to see how chocolate bars are made. It’s super interesting… and it’ll make you hungry. I warned you!

Handmade chocolates are also the best souvenirs from Dublin for kids of all ages (yes, I’m including myself). Make sure you go to Chez Emily , an Irish Belgian chocolatier. They have the very best chocolates, with no additives and chemical stuff. If you’re lucky you can also find a few seasonal treats , and even… chocolate letters ! We found small treats at less than 3€ so the Chez Emily chocolate also fits in the cheap Irish souvenir category.

Last but not least, while in the USA we always make sure to buy lots of good stuff at Whole Foods. In Ireland they have The Happy Pear , an organic food company owned by two travelling twins who have decided they wanted to turn the world into a healthier place.

The Happy Pear has 4 cafes, a farm, a roastery and an online store where you can buy lots of delicious stuff that will make you happy without hurting your body .

They’re popular for their seasonal hampers : whenever they start selling Christmas hampers , their shops (and even the online store) usually finish the first batch in a matter of days.

Me and Aldo never leave Ireland without buying a box of Salted caramel bites (sadly, salted caramel isn’t commonly used in Italy), and one of Tiffin bites , with dried fruit, nuts, seeds and cacao butter. They’re both high in fibre and vegan friendly !

Irish castle on a bright day with a small rainbow

Celtic gifts for every pocket

Ireland is famous for the traditional Irish music and celtic ballads. Because my mum is a huge fan of Celtic music, I always make sure to bring her the perfect souvenirs from Ireland: lots and lots of Irish music cds !

Modern Irish music includes names as U2 , Sinead O’Connor , The Cranberries and so on. If you’re looking for modern Celtic ballads and songs , my mom suggests buying anything by The Chieftains (“ The Foggy Dew ” by The Chieftains and Sinead O’Connor in this cd is my favorite)!

As you’ve probably already read in a previous chapter, among the best celtic gifts you can buy for someone there are the necklaces with Irish knots and crystals (or stones).

Yet on our very first trip to Ireland I saw something at the Cliffs of Moher souvenir shop: a Claddagh Ring . Back then, I had no idea what it was but I bought it and to this day, whenever I wear it, my heart feels close to the mighty Irish cliffs.

The Claddagh ring is a traditional Irish ring which represents love , loyalty and friendship . There are two hands (friendship) holding a heart (love) with a crown on it (loyalty).

You are supposed to wear the Claddagh ring in two different ways according to your status. If you’re single , you should wear the ring on the right hand, with the heart facing outward from your body. If you’re in a relationship , you should wear it on the right hand, with the heart facing inwards.

If you are roadtripping Ireland and heading towards Cork , make sure you stop at Kinsale. Once there, check out The Wild Goose Studio , which sells amazing Irish things and is specialized in handmade heritage Irish crafts .

The Wild Goose Studio was founded in 1970 by a group of Irish artists. They created a unique range of artefacts that reflect the Celtic history and the Irish traditions.

Prices aren’t as high as you might think: Celtic crosses start at 25€ and come with a very nice gift box.

Lately the Wild Goose Studio has started selling its products to other shops, so you might find some of their crafts in the biggest cities like Dublin, Kilkenny and Shannon. Keep your eyes open while shopping in Ireland, especially if you’re looking for unique Irish keepsakes !

A glass of Irish whiskey bought as a souvenir from Ireland

Top things to buy in Ireland for the Epicureans

Those of you who enjoy fine food and drinks will have a great time in Ireland. There are some cool souvenirs that you should consider if money aren’t an issue and if you have some space left in your suitcase.

First things first: Ireland is just as famous as Scotland for “ whiskey “. The difference is that Scottish whisky has a stronger aroma, while Irish whiskey is smooth and neutral , easier to use also in many drinks (albeit Aldo prefers to drink it dry).

Whiskey is yet another one of the souvenirs from Ireland that you can, and should, buy at the airport . The duty free shops usually have good deals and sometimes they’ll let you taste the liquor to decide which one you want to buy.

To get a bottle of whiskey you’ll need your boarding pass at hand as it will have to be scanned: usually liquors bought at the duty free shop are delivered (sealed) at the gate, so they don’t follow the usual rules about liquids.

The best Irish whiskey brands you should consider, according to Aldo, are Jameson Blender’s Dog , Tullamore , Bushmills and Glendalough .

Guinness beer sigh outside an Irish pub

Ireland of course means… Guinness beer. Many people like to buy a can of Guinness beer as souvenir , but I must warn you: it won’t be the same . Heck, even drinking a pint of Guinness in Italy is not the same thing! Guinness tastes much better in Ireland, that’s a fact. It’s creamy, delicious and the top looks almost whipped. To attempt to replicate the creaminess in a canned products, Guinness has patented a special floating “ widget “. When you open the can, the pressure change causes the widget to release nitrogen into the beer to replicate the creamy head you’ve seen on your pint in Ireland.

It’s one of those Irish souvenirs you can buy only if you are aware of what you’re bringing home! Also make sure to wrap it extra well before to put it inside your checked baggage!

Among the expensive gifts from Ireland for those who appreciate a more “ cultural ” souvenir, there are books .

If you’re planning to visit Dublin, you might stop at Ulysses Bookshop to buy a rare rare book . This bookstore is part of the Antiquarian Booksellers Association and sells a selection of rare editions by James Joyce , Oscar Wilde , Samuel Beckett and many more.

At the Trinity Gift shop you might be lucky enough to buy a reproduction of “ The Book of Kells “. The oldest book in the world is an illuminated manuscript Gospel book in Latin, on display at Trinity College Library , in Dublin.

Cheap Irish souvenirs for budget travellers

Are you visiting Ireland on a budget? Keep reading: there are quite a few cute things you can buy for just a few Euros , so you won’t break the bank!

Usually one of the things I do when I’m abroad is to find a nice postcard , for just a few cents . I then buy a stamp and write a memory, or a quote, or a few words to remind my future self of this trip. Then I send the postcard to myself. It’s a great way to fight against the post-travel splump , and to start a new travel collection.

I pin my postcards on a cork board I found on Amazon , next to my world scratch map : it’s a great motivator to keep travelling and of course to keep on dreaming!

Fridge magnets are also cheap souvenirs from Ireland that you’ll find everywhere you go and that you can fit in every pocket, so it won’t be too much of a hassle to bring them home.

Many shops in Dublin also sell cheap Guinness souvenirs . You’ll find t-shirts , scarves , keychains and much more. Of course the smaller items are also less expensive.

There’s a high number of pencils with erasers and pens that you can buy in souvenir stores in Ireland for just a few cents, up to 2€ maximum . Not only they’re perfect for any stationery enthusiast, but you’ll be able to buy quite a lot without breaking the bank. So if you’re thinking of buying small Irish gifts for all of your friends at home, look for pencils or pens!

Sheep looking at the camera in the Ireland countryside

Something that kids love (and parent’s not so much) are tin whistles , also known as penny whistles . This musical instrument is closely associated with Celtic music and it’s a type of fipple flute. It’s a very common souvenir from Ireland: almost any souvenir shop in Dublin sells them! They’re good souvenirs for kids, but don’t be too surprised if their parents will stop talking to you afterwards!

In case you don’t want to lose your friends, you can still buy something for them that is cheap and fun. How about a few bags of “ Leprechaun poo “? They’re fun Irish gift ideas: of course it’s not poo but jelly beans! Find the leprechaun poo in any supermarket or souvenir shop in Ireland: we even saw them at the airport!

Among the cheap things to buy in Ireland  you should add an Irish coat of arms . Those with Irish ancestry can also buy a Coat of Arms linked to their Irish heritage: there are 130 popular Irish surnames in Ireland, and each one has a specific Coat of Arms. According to how much you want to spend, you can have your Coat of Arms on paper, on a plaque or even on a patch.

If you’ve read “ Ulysses ” by James Joyce, you probably know about Sweny , a chemist store located within 100 yards of the birthplace of Oscar Wilde. It’s wildly popular for its lemon soap , because Leopold Bloom in “ Ulysses ” picks up a bar while waiting for a prescription.

A bar of lemon soap will only cost you 5€ : the fun thing is that once you get at Sweny’s, there will be volunteers who can tell you all about “ Ulysses “. Some will even sing Gaelic songs for you!

What are the cheaper souvenirs from Ireland, for those who really can’t spare much? Well, how about beer coasters ? They will be served with your beer in every pub. Ask the server if you can take them and… yay: free Irish souvenirs!

One of my favorite souvenirs to bring back from Ireland are greeting cards. There are some beautiful ones with Irish phrases and humorous ones for all ages. Easy to pack, too!

You know I never thought of greeting cards as souvenirs from Ireland but this is such a brilliant idea! What an interesting collection!

Finding good souvenirs does seem like a very tricky thing to do. I liked what yous aid about how it might be smart to look for some books. I would like to get something that I could use often. A hoodie seems like a nice thing to get.

I’m very glad this article was useful 🙂 I hope you’ll get to buy lovely souvenirs from Ireland, safe travels!

Do you have an Irish fan on your shopping list for birthdays, anniversaries, holidays or just any old time? Or maybe it’s you who is in love with Ireland . Perhaps you made a trip and forgot to pick up an Irish souvenir for yourself? Alternatively, maybe you just want to share your love of Ireland with some authentic Irish gifts.

Many a time I’ve walked out of a store thinking should I or shouldn’t I and every damn time I totally regret the fact that I didn’t and spent the time dithering.

These days I am much luckier I actually get to live here so it’s all good and I can indulge my love of Irish gifts. How lucky can a girl get? If you have forgotten to bring home that perfect Irish souvenir here is all my favourite Irish gifts that can be ordered online to surprise your family and friends or purchased on your dream visit to Ireland .

  • What can I bring home from Ireland to the USA or Canada?

The main items you can’t bring home with you are raw meat products or things like plants, fruits and seeds. Items such as cheese, baked goods, and canned or preserved foods are fine but must be declared. If you fail to declare these types of goods you could face up to a $10,000 fine.

To get the most up-to-date information on what’s permitted, visit the US CBP information page:  Travelers bringing food into the U.S. for personal use . The rules for bringing food and food products into Canada are broadly similar but with a few differences. Find out more about  What You Can Bring to Canada , from About.com’s Canada Travel Guide Jane McLean.

Well, this can be a tricky one you see Ireland (like every other tourist trap in the world has a myriad of tacky gift/souvenir shops. The most well-known and seen in virtually every city across Ireland is Carroll’s Gift Shops.

If however, you are looking for authentic Irish gifts then you need to look in smaller towns and villages. For example here are the places in Donegal to buy authentic Donegal Tweeds and Knits.

The Donegal Shop, 201 St Stephen’s Green, Dublin

Triona – Donegal Tweed & Irish gifts, The Diamond, Donegal Town

Donegal Tweed Visitor Centre, Main St, Ardara, Co. Donegal

Magee of Donegal, The Diamond, Donegal Town

Avoca is a name that screams Irish weaving and you will find many locations where not only can you indulge in your love of fine woven scarfs, throws and much more but you can also visit the Avoca Mill and have a tour of the weaving floor.

Avoca Mill grounds just outside Dublin

You will find Avoca locations all over Ireland including in Belfast but my personal favourite was found at Powerscourt. Here there is a market where you can buy all kinds of foodie gifts, grab a lovely snack in the café and enjoy the stunning Powerscourt gardens.

Avoca throws and woven items.

Remember when you stopped in that beautiful Avoca store and you didn’t buy that soft as down throw that was so colourful and you left the shop glancing back thinking should I buy it shouldn’t I buy it and you bloody well didn’t.

Unique Gifts from Ireland – 32 of the best souvenirs of Ireland

Yeah, me too but guess what? You can buy them online. This fabulous  green and pink Avoca throw  is 100% lambswool and it is to die for. Alternatively, how about this amazing  purple and green cashmere  throw, I can wrap myself up in it and it’s perfect for a blingy night out or a peaceful night in by the fire. I adore Avoca products.

One of the best gifts from Ireland and an absolute must-have is an  Aran sweater  made right here in Ireland. This is one I simply love. I like a long sweater with pockets and this one is so perfect it even has a hood so I can wear it under a good coat (the layers thing again ya know) and my head is warm. Best yet it comes in extra-large woo hoo. I do love the green (so Irish ya know) but it does come in a load of colours including (get this only the Irish) parsnip.

For the man in your life, I really like this cardigan sweater with a nice roll type collar and buttons. Like the ladies’ one, it’s 100% merino wool. So soft and warm, and It comes in a nice deep charcoal colour and looks great dressed up or down.

Unique Gifts from Ireland – 32 of the best souvenirs of Ireland

For the little ones in your life I cannot resist this isn’t it gorgeous? A lovely  hooded jumper  in Merino wool with buttons on the side so damn cute.

Unique Gifts from Ireland – 32 of the best souvenirs of Ireland

The first thing my hubs bought when we got to Ireland was a flat cap. Now there are two types of flat caps here. The first is the kind of flat cap you see in the TV show Peaky Blinders it’s a softer cap with a bill that the top of the hat snaps to as seen here. This  Biddy Murphy  one is a true Donegal tweed cap that comes in 4 colours and has a nice warm quilted lining.

Unique Gifts from Ireland – 32 of the best souvenirs of Ireland

This green one is not as soft and squishy as the Peaky Blinders style but it’s a firm more shaped flat cap and the green is just perfect it’s also made from  pure Donegal tweed .

Jewellery the ultimate gift from Ireland

Now, this is absolutely beautiful and really hard to resist. It’s called a wedding band but it is so beautiful I would wear it without the husband.  It’s a  women’s sterling silver Claddagh band and it’s irresistible. The best place to buy a Claddagh Ring is in Galway at The Claddagh a jewellery shop that specializes in Claddagh’s.

How should you wear your Claddagh ring:

Not only the ring has a symbolic representation, but the way you wear it also has a meaning.

If you’re not in a serious relationship, wear it on your right hand facing outward.

If you’re in a serious relationship, wear it on your right hand facing inward.

If you’re engaged, wear it on your left hand facing outward.

And finally, if you’re married, wear it on your left hand facing inward.

Unique Gifts from Ireland – 32 of the best souvenirs of Ireland

I love a brooch or a pin whatever you want to call it. I like to wear 5 or 6 on my jackets all together and I do love this  Tara Brooch pin  based on the Tara brooch, a famous and beautiful brooch for all occasions. It is a Celtic Cloak brooch from 700 AD and can be seen in the National Museum of Ireland. The Brooch wasn’t found at the Hill of Tara it was found in Bettystown on the beach. Made from gold and silver it contains amber and glass beads.

How about a custom, handmade  Jameson Irish Whiskey Barrel ring  made with authentic Jameson Whiskey Barrels Oak. Over-harvesting made Irish Oak rare after about 1850, most Jameson barrels are made from oak found in the USA.

A beautiful silver Celtic band inset with  Connemara marble . Connemara marble is one of the rarest marbles in the world and is found exclusively in the West of Ireland. Sourced from family-controlled quarries in Connemara. it is becoming increasingly rare. The world’s finest truly green marble, it varies in colour from silver grey, pale green, and shades of sage and moss to a deep variegated dark green.

Sláinte! – Irish alcohol & food gifts

Irish whiskey is famous worldwide, but I bet you didn’t know that the Irish also distil some very fine Gin. You can purchase any of these fine whiskies or beers in most liquor shops throughout Ireland.

The word “whiskey” comes from the first word in the Gaelic phrase “uisce beatha,” which means water of life, and of course in Ireland, you can taste and tour many a whiskey distillery .

Jameson : New Midleton Distillery in Cork produces Jameson and other local whiskeys. Jameson is a blend of low pot still and fine grain. A sweet and subtle whiskey with gentle notes of vanilla.

Unique Gifts from Ireland – 32 of the best souvenirs of Ireland

Bushmills :  The world’s oldest distillery, in Northern Ireland, produces a blend of lighter grain and malt whiskey. A smooth warming taste that is sweet with floral aromatics – a must-try.

Connemara : Connemara tastes and smells like Ireland, to be honest – sweet, peated single malt with light spices and vanilla.

Tullamore Dew: Founded in 1829 in the town of Tullamore, located between Dublin and Galway.

Silkie Slieve League Whiskey: The Legendary Silkie Irish Whiskey is a balanced blend of double and triple distilled single malts, soft grain whiskey and a hint of peated malt.

Silkie Irish maritime Gin : An Dúlamán Irish Maritime Gin is the first gin distilled in Co. Donegal. Dúlamán is the name of an Irish folk song which relates a conversation between two seaweed collectors (it is also the name of one of our gin seaweeds).

Smithwick’s Irish Ale: Smithwick’s was originally brewed in the heart of Kilkenny at St. Francis Abbey in 1710, and today it is considered one of the most popular ales in Ireland.

Guinness Draught: This stout originated in Dublin in 1759 and while it might be just a marketing ploy, the company recommends pouring its beer using a special 2-part method to create the perfect pint.

DUBLIN, IRELAND - FEB 15, 2014: Pints of beer are served at the Guinness Brewery on Feb 15, 2014. The brewery where 2.5 million pints of stout are brewed daily was founded by Arthur Guinness in 1759.

Murphy’s Irish Stout: This dark, rich beer has been brewed in Cork, Ireland since 1856. It has almost no bitterness thanks to its flavours of smooth coffee and chocolate.

These are just a few of my favourite Irish pantry staples. I cannot go without my Barry’s tea and the Ballymaloe relish goes on everything.

The aroma that sings of Ireland and the old peat bogs a smell that haunts you after your visit. Well, now you can bring it home but only in incense form.

Top 24 Souvenirs to Bring Home from Ireland: the Definitive Guide

Top 24 Souvenirs to Bring Home from Ireland: the Definitive Guide

Sharing is caring!

Ah Ireland– land of saints and scholars, dramatic scenery, the craic and warm-hearted people– and amazing souvenirs.

ireland tourist gifts

Ireland is such a great souvenir destination because it still maintains many long-standing traditional crafts (woven fisherman sweaters, for example).  Ireland also has a deep connection with literature and poetry, making it an ideal place to discover a favorite author. And those rolling green hills mean well-fed dairy cows and delicious chocolate and dairy products.

The Best 24 Unique Irish Souvenirs and Gifts

Kilkenny Ireland shopping

Kilkenny is a great Irish shopping destination with its narrow medieval streets and independent shops.

1. Irish Milk Chocolate

One of the first things I noticed in an Irish grocery store was  an entire aisle  devoted to Irish Cadbury Dairy Milk Bars.  Yes, I know that Cadbury is an international company (now owned by Kraft), but the Cadbury chocolate you’ll find in Ireland is different from the Cadbury chocolate you’ll find in the US or even in the UK.

Irish Cadbury Dairy Milk advertises that it’s made with 100% local Irish milk, that is,  real liquid milk  and not milk solids.  I’m not sure what it is about Irish Dairy Milk that makes it so delicious, but I grabbed a handful of these chocolate bars so I could contemplate it further.

Other local chocolatiers like Butlers Chocolate are also worth checking out.

You’ll be hooked on Irish chocolate– a delicious but inexpensive souvenir.

2. Irish Cheese

Ireland has the most delectable cheeses, especially if you’re a fan of robust cheddar.

If you’re in Dublin, visit Sheridans Cheesemongers, a top-notch cheesemonger located right in the center of town. Read all about Sheridans and some hyper local cheese options in my post here .

3. Aran Island Fisherman Sweater

If you are lucky enough to visit the Aran Islands as I was, you can pick up an Aran island sweater or scarf directly at the source. While you might find discounted knock offs of Aran knits around Ireland (including on the island itself), you can usually tell authentic hand knit sweaters by the high price.

Be prepared to pay 200 pounds and upwards for a sweater knit entirely by hand, tagged with a label bearing the name of the knitter. Cheaper, machine made versions of the fisherman sweater are also readily available.

Ireland edit - 036

My trip to the Aran Islands was the highlight of one Ireland road trip. From the sprawling rock walls, the thatched roof homes to the achingly beautiful cliffs.

Aran sweaters, while warm and durable, can be a little scratchy.

If a pricey handknit Aran sweater is out of your price range, but you still want something hand knit, consider a scarf or fisherman’s belt.

4. Wool Blanket or Throw

I find it easy to find souvenirs that inspire me when I travel Ireland. It is the magical kind of place you want to wrap around you and bring home– something I’ve been able to literally do with a beautiful handmade wool throw.

5. Donegal Tweed

When I think of traditional Irish outfit, I envision a gorgeous jacket in Donegal tweed. County Donegal still manufactures tweed within its country lines, with the oldest mill, Magee, Molloy & McNut, dating back to 1866. You can also find smaller artisan manufactures of tweed who work out of their studios. If you are not in the market for a pricey Donegal tweed jacket, consider smaller items like hats, ipad cases and scarves.

6. Trinity College Gifts

You’ll want to see the beautiful library and the Book of Kells on Trinity College’s gorgeous campus. For collegiate souvenirs, they also have an excellent gift shop as you exit the library. Look for collegiate tees, rugby balls and books.

7. Irish Soda Bread or Brown Bread

You’ve probably heard of and tried Irish soda bread. Pick it up at any local bakery or supermarket. But if you’re a bread aficionado, you might also want to consider Irish brown bread– described as soda bread’s “ deeper, darker sister. ” Both breads are best enjoyed with some creamy Irish butter.

Knitting has had a resurgence among millennials, some who have put down their smart phone for knitting needles. In a country full of sheep and a tradition of knitting and weaving, it’s not hard to find quality local yarn.

9. Sweny’s Lemon Soap from Sweny’s Pharmacy

Sweny’s was a place where a character in Joyce’s  Ulysses  bought lemon-scented soap. Sweny’s still exists in Dublin today (located at 1 Lincoln Place)– but as a charity that sells only a few items, including the famous lemon soap. It’s really a must for any lover of James Joyce.

10. Fingerless Gloves

I’m not sure why but I saw a proliferation of fingerless gloves on my trips to Ireland. While at first glance they seem impractical (aren’t gloves supposed to keep your fingers warm?) they are perfect for that in between weather when you need to handle your camera or smart phone.

11. Souvenir from Avoca

Like an Anthropologie on steroids, Avoca has fabulous homespun designs in a slew of irresistible candy colors– except you won’t find anything made in China here. Avoca is one of the world’s oldest surviving manufacturing companies (and the oldest in Ireland), with a mill that dates back to 1723, and incredibly, is still family owned and run. For a full photo view of what I loved at Avoca, read my post here.

12. Book of Poetry or Literature

Some of the world’s most loved literature and poetry comes from Ireland– James Joyce, Oscar Wilde, Seamus Heany, William Butler Yeats– I could go on and on. I bought a beautiful hardcover edition of Yeat’s favorite poems– check used book stores for deals.

14. Irish Tea

England does not have the monopoly on fabulous tea. Irish breakfast tea is more robust than English, with a reddish color and malty flavor and is usually taken with milk. Try some popular Irish brands like Barry’s, Lyon’s and Bewley’s.

15. Connemara Marble

On one visit to Ireland, we flew into Shannon, rented a car and took off for Connemara, the region that hugs the Western coastline of Ireland. The drive through Connemara was stunning, full of contrasts and colors, beaches and  mountain vistas.

A perfect souvenir of the region would be something fashioned from local Connemara marble. Marble ice cubes and coasters are popular gifts.

16. Guinness Merchandise

I think it’s impossible to visit Dublin without stopping into the Guinness factory and tour. Although I visited before I started blogging (so no photos of the gift shop, sorry!) I can tell you the souvenirs for beer lovers are plentiful. While there is a huge selection of glassware, a more portable souvenir might be Guinness coasters based on vintage designs.

17. Walking Stick

Ireland is a country of walkers, though what they call a “walk” there would be more likely deemed a somewhat challenging hike here. So a beautifully carved hiking stick makes a lovely souvenir.

Walks are a favorite Irish pastime.

18. Claddagh Ring

I grew up in a town with a lot of children of Irish immigrants, so in grade school many received their first claddagh ring. The design of the claddagh ring is heart, crown and hands, representing love and friendship.

I recall in school we would always check to see the direction the person was wearing it– depending on the hand and which way the ring is turned indicates if you are single, married or in a relationship. For grade schoolers this was endless fun.

19. Irish Whiskey

Despite neighboring whiskey centric Scotland, Ireland has its own booming whiskey market, up over 1000% in the last decade.  I am no whiskey expert but learned that Irish whiskey differs from Scottish whiskey in that it’s less peaty and triple distilled. Taste test for yourself.

20. Waterford Crystal

Of course you can find Waterford crystal all over the world, but the question on every shopper’s mind is: is Waterford crystal cheaper in Ireland? I haven’t priced checked the Waterford factory store in Ireland myself, but the consensus from researching this online is not really.

Also, keep in mind that not all Waterford crystal is made in Ireland– much of it is now made in Slovenia.

But what you will find at the Waterford crystal store headquarters in Waterford is selection– this is the largest amount of Waterford worldwide, with some items exclusive to the factory, so it is possible to find a unique souvenir here unavailable anywhere else.

21. Irish Linen

Ireland is famous for its beautiful linens. Look for tea towels and long night shirt.

22. Irish Smoked Salmon

After trying the delicious local salmon on your Irish vacation, you’ll want to bring some home as a souvenir. Fortunately there are many specialty purveyors of smoked salmon– try Burren smokehouse’s organic varieties. You can actually visit the smokehouse, conveniently located about 15 minutes from the Cliffs of Moher.

23. Newbridge Silver Christmas Ornament

Founded in 1934, Newbridge is a well known silver manufacturer, known best for its tableware. A popular silver souvenir is their annual Christmas ornament.

24. Irish Butter

There’s a reason Kerrygold is such a popular butter option available in most US supermarkets– it’s deliciously creamy, made from the milk of cows who roam Ireland’s verdant hills.  When in Ireland, pick up an artisanal brand of butter– it will easily survive the plane ride home without refrigeration.

Thanks so much. We are going in March. This was very helpful. I will try the Cadbury chocolate. I have 4 pieces of Waterford and a vintage Beleek cup and saucer I can see through. Very fragile. Hope to find something unique and, of course, a Christmas ornament.

Looking for the perfect present for someone who loves to travel my unique travel gifts will give you plenty of inspiration..

I am fortunate that I can justify spending money on travel accessories, so one of my guilty pleasures is browsing websites to see what’s new. I have picked some of my favourite items below, many of which I already own, but there are a few that are still on my wish list… Perhaps you want to treat a loved one to some unique travel gifts, or maybe you just want to treat yourself?

Whatever the reason, I’ve got gifts from €8 to €525, so there is something here to suit all tastes and budgets. I hope one of my unique travel gifts takes your fancy – do let me know in the comments below.

1. Personalised Leather Passport Holder and Luggage Tag: €80

passport holder travel gifts

This was my favourite travel gift that I received when I started my website. I have seen personalised passport holders and luggage tags elsewhere, but seeing my company logo perfectly engraved on them was something special. Nine years and hundreds of flights later and I still love them. The high quality leather ages beautifully and both look ‘well travelled’.

These unique travel gifts are made by CarveOn, an Irish company who use premium vegetable tanned leather, and each product is finished by hand. CarveOn ensure their suppliers were environmentally conscious and all packaging uses recycled materials.

2. World Map Pendant & Chain: €23

I have a similar pendant to this and love it. This is a great gift for the girl who likes to travel, and at only €23 it makes an ideal stocking filler.

3. Travel Prints: from €65

unique travel gifts

A personalised print from a favourite destination is another unique travel gift. Perhaps you have memories of where you first met your loved one, or a place you like go back to regularly? There are many different prints to choose from, depending on personal taste. They also make great wedding or engagement gifts.

I like this Map Mountain where you can feature any three cities in the world. They have a vast resource of maps to use, so even small towns can be included. You can choose these unique travel gifts framed or unframed. I ordered one of these for my nephew when he moved overseas and was impressed with the quality and service.

Another gift that took my fancy is this contemporary bus blind, that will highlight a personal place in coordinates. This would suit an office too.

4.  Jewellery organiser: €13

5. Paul Smith Globe Cuff links: €130

7. Apple Airtag: from €33

luggage tips - how to avoid lost luggage when travelling with Apple AirTags

The Apple AirTag looks like a large coin and can be placed in your suitcase or backpack when you travel. It shows you where you luggage is at all times via the Find my Network app.

Priced at just €33 for one coin, and €109 for a pack of four, these are a good investment if you are concerned about lost luggage. Samsung have a similar device called a Smart Tag , and Tile is another alternative that works with any mobile device, but does not have the same precision finding as the AirTag.

8. Go-Pro Hero 10 Waterproof Digital Action Camera: €290

unique travel gifts - go pro hero 8

It has a built in stabiliser so is great if you are on the go, or just want to record yourself while walking. It also captures great photos, even in low light areas.

9. Bamboo Eye Mask & Pillowcase: €55

ireland tourist gifts

This gift set from Irish designer Jo Browne is a gorgeous travel gift for someone who likes a little luxury in their life! Made from Bamboo fabric – it feels like a silky cashmere. Bamboo fabric is hypoallergenic and breathable, making it cooler in summer and warmer in winter.

Ideal for long journeys, this pillowcase and matching face mask, I have one of these and never travel without it!

10. Marc Jacobs Large Traveller Tote Bag: from €275

travel bag

Marc Jacobs tote bags are so versatile. They are lightweight and roomy so are ideal for travelling, shopping or even a day at the beach.

They come in various colours and sizes but I suggest buying a medium or large for the travel addict in your life. There are large tote bags available from €220.

11. Hotel vouchers with 4 handmade Irish gifts: From €160

Christmas gift boxes from Select Hotels of Ireland

With a choice of over 20 hotels to choose from, in superb locations throughout Ireland, Christmas gift boxes from Select Hotels of Ireland are the ultimate travel gift this Christmas.  As well as giving someone a hotel gift voucher, these gift boxes include four handmade Irish gifts.

12. Earbuds, and Airfly Wireless Adapter from €47

travel gift ideas - Airfly

Noice cancelling ear phones or ear buds are a Godsend when travelling, and there are many luxury brands on the market. Jabra ear buds are less expensive than some of the more well known brands, and are a great travel gift.

Shop here   Which ever option you choose, make sure you get AirFly is a wireless adapter to go with them. This is bluetooth device that lets you use your wireless headphones or earbuds in places that only have a headphone jack, like airplanes and treadmills.

I bought one of these recently and used it on a long haul flight to the USA. It was great to be able to use my own headphones rather than the flimsy earphones that are given on planes.

13. Personalised Leather Travel Journal: €19

travel gifts - travel journal

This distressed leather travel journal is an inexpensive and beautiful gift for the traveller in your life. The handmade, eco-friendly and Fair Trade journal also makes a difference to the communities who make them.

The cotton is made by a charity that promotes women’s development in rural areas of Rajasthan, India. There are different sizes to choose from and all can be personalised.

14. Louis Copeland’s Weekender LeatherBag: €399

For men who like to travel, or have to travel for work, this is a practical, yet luxurious Christmas gift. As well as a leather weekender bag it can also be used as a suit bag.

Beneath two zip pockets you will find a suit carrier as well as shoe pockets. If you are looking for unique travel gifts for men, look no further. Available in brown or black.

15. Samsonsite light-shock cabin case: €299

travel gadgets

It may be more of a practical travel gift rather than a unique travel gift, but believe me the travel addict in your life will thank you for it! It is so light and expandable that you can fit much more inside this case than another case of similar size. I purchased mine in Kildare Village , but they are also available on Amazon.

16. Travel Themed Candles from €29

19. Insta 360 x 3 Action camera €535

If your travel pal likes gadgets – this is the ultimate gift. I bought one of these a few years ago. It is a 360 camera action camera that can be used for photos, videos and live streaming. It is also waterproof and has what looks like an invisible selfie-stick on screen!

I have linked the newer model which has an even longer batter life, larger screen, faster WiFi, increased camera pixels and voice control. Check out the video above to see all the amazing features.

20. Travel Money Box €15

Travel money box is a unique travel gift

This wooden frame money box is the perfect present for someone who likes to save for their next adventure. Priced at just €15, it won’t break the bank either!
