Key West cruise port

Local Time 2024-04-07 21:52

Port Key West cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from Key West, Florida. To see the full itineraries (ports of call dates and arrival / departure times) and their lowest rates – just follow the corresponding ship-link.

Key West is an island, city and cruise port in the Florida Strait (within Monroe County, Florida USA) with population around 25,000. Key West City includes also the nearby islands Dredgers Key, Fleming Key, Sunset Key and also Stock Island's northern part.

Key West (port locode USEYW) is approx 150 mi (240 km) from Miami  and just 90 mi (145 km) from  Havana Cuba .

As cruise port, Key West has 2 ship docking piers. The first/principal (Fisherman Wharf) is within walking distance from downtown. The second (Outer Mole Pier) is a free trolley bus ride away from downtown.

In mid-July 2020, to the November ballot was added a referendum (3 proposed amendments) to limit the number of big-sized cruise ships calling at Key West. The ballot's amendments restricted the ship's size ( max passenger capacity 1300), limited the number of disembarking tourists (max 1500 per day) and also gave priority to newer and safer liners - more environmental (engines, technologies) and with fewer accidents (especially onboard illness outbreaks ) and better VSPs (CDC vessel sanitation records).

  • According to a CLIA-commissioned study conducted in August 2020 (CLIA-Cruise Lines International Association), the industry's economic impact for Key West is that ~7% of the island's total spending is from cruise ship tourists who contribute ~USD 73 million of the island's total ~USD 1,2 billion annual visitor spending.
  • In November 2020, Key West's residents voted for the three proposals and effectively banned the large cruise ships, including the fleets of Carnival, Royal Caribbean, NCL, MSC.
  • In late April 2021, the Forida Senate passed (in a 25 to 14 vote) "Senate Bill 426" that could overturn Key West's initiative to limit cruise shipping. The bill (aka "State Preemption of Seaport Regulations") was introduced by Jim Boyd (Senator of District 21). In the bill, he indicated that allowing each port city in Florida to impose its own rules on the port's maritime activities could result in "abrupt changes in the supply lines bringing goods into and out of this state", thus disrupting the state's economy. However, to become a law, Bill 426 must pass Florida's House of Representatives.
  • On June 29, 2021, Florida's Governor Ron DeSantis signed "Senate Bill 1194 (2021)" (aka Transportation Bill). The Bill contains various transportation-related (road, airports, seaports) provisions but also doesn't allow ballots/referendums (conducted by local municipalities and counties) to impact the state's seaport businesses. "[the Bill] Provides that with respect to any port that has received or is eligible to apply for or receive certain state seaport funding, a local ballot initiative or referendum may not restrict maritime commerce in such port based on specified but unlimited factors. These provisions apply retroactively and prospectively, prohibiting, rendering void, and preempting to the state any conflicting initiative or referendum".
  • Since July 1, 2021, Key West's ban on cruise liners is history.

In 2019, the cruise port handled 417 ship calls and nearly 965,000 passengers.

On December 1, 2017, RCI-Royal Caribbean added a 5-night itinerary on Empress of the Seas visiting Key West and Havana (overnight). For summer season 2018, Empress OTS had scheduled roundtrips to Cuba from Tampa FL with a series of 4-5-night itineraries to Key West, Mexico ( Costa Maya , Cozumel ) and Cuba ( Havana ). For winter season 2018-2019, the ship was homeported in Fort Lauderdale .

On November 27, 2018, upon leaving Key West, due to heavy winds, the luxury liner  Silver Spirit collided with The Fisherman Wharf (aka Mallory Pier/at Mallory Square). The ship departed the berth at ~6:30 PM and started to turn around when strong winds stopped it and pushed it back towards the dock. The crash resulted in minor hull damages and no injuries, but the concrete structure sustained damage that left the berth unusable (remained closed until May 2019). Berth damages were estimated ~USD 0,5-0,75 million. Silversea agreed to pay for the repairs plus ~US$50,000 reimbursement (for not-received passenger fees during the restoration period).

In 2023, ACL-American Cruise Lines included Key West as a call port of its 7-night/8-day "Florida Gulf Coast and Keys" itinerary. The roundtrip from Tampa was specifically designed for ACL's newbuild catamarans (Coastal Cats) and was first operated by American Glory in 2023.

On this ACL ex-Florida voyage, on days 3 and 4 the ship stays in Key West overnight. This allows tourists to explore Key West City on Day 3 (with a complimentary guided tour to the Ernest Hemingway Home & Museum) and the Dry Tortugas National Park on Day 4 (visiting Fort Jefferson/Civil War prison).

The Caribbean island Key West was initially called "Bone Key" (Cayo Hueso) honoring the Indian skeletons found by the Spaniards on its shores when they landed here for the first time in the 16th-century. The USA bought Cayo Hueso from Spain in the early-19th-century, and eventually, the name was Americanized to Key West. Today, the island is best-known with its pleasantly warm weather and great beaches, architecture, historical sites, and easily-traversed streets lined with restaurants, bars, nightclubs, shops, galleries, theatres, museums. Cruise ship tourists may easily explore the downtown on foot and see Duval Street, Mallory Square, visit the Aquarium, Mel Fisher Museum, Audubon House, Hemmingway's House. A quick tour is offered by the Conch Train.

The island is one of nearly a thousand coral islets (Florida Keys archipelago) stretching southward from Miami. Key West is directly linked to mainland-USA (Miami) via Overseas Highway (113 mi / 182 km long US Route 1). Overseas Highway is part of US Highway 1 (serving East Coast USA) that has total length 2369 mi (3813 km), starts in Key West and ends in Fort Kent (Maine, at the USA-Canada border).

US Highway 1 connects most large US East Coast cities ( Miami , Jacksonville FL , Raleigh NC, Richmond VA, Washington DC , Baltimore MD , Philadelphia PA , NYC , Boston MA ) and is the USA's longest south-north route linking Southeastern US to New England.

Key West cruise terminal

Most cruise ships in Key West dock at The Fisherman Wharf (aka Mallory Pier/Mallory Square). Alternatively, the cruise port has two more berths - Outer Mole Pier (Truman Waterfront Park) and Margaritaville Resort (near Mallory Square).

Next are listed the most popular Carnival Cruise Lines tours in Key West, with USD prices per adult:

  • catamaran and snorkeling tour ($50)

Guide to Sailing to the Key West Cruise Port

Posted on Published: 02/14/2023

I’ve sailed on many cruise ships in the Caribbean, and one of my favorite ports of call ever is Key West in the Florida Keys. As a US port, it’s a nice stop where you can turn on your cellular service, use US dollars, and even stop at an American pharmacy if you need any refills. But, it’s also a beautiful, walkable town with so many activities that are great for families and cruise ship passengers.

While some frequent cruisers skip getting off the ship at ports in favor of spending more time on the ship, I highly recommend leaving the ship in Key West. At a minimum, it’s great to walk around, shop, and have a delicious meal before going back to the ship. It’s an easy port to explore.

There are three different docks in Key West where your cruise ship may dock. These include Mallory Square Dock, Outer Mole Pier (owned by the U.S. Navy), and Pier B (which is privately owned and is in front of the Westin Resort). Our recent Virgin Voyages cruise (as well as my last Disney Cruise Line Key West sailing) docked at Mallory Square, which seems to be most commonly used by cruise ships.

It’s important to note that there has been some talk of local ordinances and changes to cruise ship rules in Key West. During the cruise shutdown, Key West voters to limit cruise tourism in the area.

The proposed ordinance would limit the number of ships based on the number of passengers. While smaller vessels could still be allowed, larger ships would not be permitted. While the Key West residents did approve this, it hasn’t been implemented.

In looking at the cruise calendar for all of the cruises in Key West, it’s clear that not all of the cruise lines have returned to the port of Key West. For instance, we didn’t see any upcoming Disney Cruise Lines or Royal Caribbean ships on the schedule. So keep an eye on these proposed changes if you’d like to visit this popular port of call.

Excursions or Going Solo

If your cruise ship is going to stop at Key West for a day, you’ll want to consider whether or not you’d like to book an official cruise ship excursion. Unlike some other ports, this is really a place where you can easily comfortably head off on your own. But there are lots of excursion options to consider if you’d prefer to do something scheduled.

These are likely to vary based on availability and can differ by the cruise line. On my last sailing to Key West, offerings included a bike tour, wildlife safari, a trolley tour, parasailing, a catamaran tour, a snorkel trip, a walking tour, a pub crawl, and a rum tasting tour. You may also be able to visit Fort Zachary Taylor State Park or Dry Tortugas National Park.

In general, excursions should be toured in advance, because they may sell out. Booking a cruise-sponsored excursion is typically the safest option – you’ll be refunded if the ship can’t stop there for some reason, and you’ll be sure to be back on the ship in time at the end of the evening.

You can also opt to walk off the ship and do your own thing for the day. It’s fairly easy to get around, and getting back to the ship at the end of the day probably won’t be too difficult. There are several options for getting around. You can walk around, or even rent a golf cart to drive yourself around the town.

On our first visit to Key West, we opted to purchase tickets to the Conch Tour Train. This adorable train makes three stops around Key West, while also offering narration and information about the town. It stops at the seaport, the Southernmost Point, and the Hemingway House.

It was nice to get a ride to those destinations, while also learning about the history of Key West. The Conch Tour Train offers a nice balance between all of those. Tickets can be purchased online in advance, but you can also buy them once you arrive at the port.

There are also walking tour options , which can be a great way to see the town and learn more about the history.

Hemingway Home and Museum

We chose to visit the Hemingway Home and Museum on our first visit to Key West. After visiting the Southernmost Point, we walked down to the Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum. While kids may not know much about Ernest Hemingway, they will certainly love the 40-50 six-toed cats that make the house/museum their home.

It’s important to know that the Hemingway Home is cash only, so make sure you have some with you. Guided tours are offered at no additional cost on a set schedule. We had just missed one and decided to skip it. You can easily walk through the house yourself, reading the exhibits. No reservations are required for your visit.

Southernmost point marker

Southernmost Point of the United States

The most popular photo opportunity in Key West, the Southernmost Point marker is definitely a must-see and one of the best things to do in Key West . Go early, because a line forms as tourists want to take their photo by the marker. It’s a gorgeous area on the waterfront as well. We found that everyone in line was friendly and willing to take photos of the group in front of them, so you can all be in the picture.

Mel Fisher Maritime Museum

The Mel Fisher Maritime Museum is a nonprofit maritime museum located in Key West. Tickets can be purchased in advance or at the door. It’s open 7-days a week, and exhibits include both permanent and rotating traveling exhibits.

Entrance to Key West Aquarium with fountain in front

Key West Aquarium

If you are visiting with young children, you may consider visiting the Key West Aquarium . It’s a short walk from the Mallory Square pier, and it’s located among shops and restaurants.

Tickets for the aquarium can be purchased online. Combination tickets, including tickets to tours in Key West like the Conch Tour Train and the Old Town Trolley Tour, are also offered.

Exhibits at the aquarium focus on the local marine life, including sea turtles and sharks. A Sea Turtle Conservation Tour, a jellyfish exhibit, a shark exhibit, and a touch tank are among the popular attractions. Check out their schedule online before you go to see the times of the Shark Feeding and Conservation Tour.

Shopping and Eating in Key West

While there are some fun points of interest and excursions in Key West Florida, during this past visit, I enjoyed just walking around the town. We had a few places in mind to visit, and armed with Google maps, just walked around on our own.

As soon as you walk off your ship, you’ll be faced with souvenir shops and cafes. If you are looking to have a slice of that famous Key Lime pie, there are ample opportunities throughout the town (including at the port). You’ll also see some kiosks where you can book some last-minute excursions if you’ve made a last-minute decision to do one.

We started our journey at the nearby CVS, to pick up a few forgotten items. Then, we walked to Books & Books at the Studios, the bookstore co-owned by famed young-adult author Judy Blume. This is a great place to pick up the latest beach read, especially if you need a book to read on your cruise. They have lots of wonderful books, including staff suggestions if you aren’t sure what to purchase.

Attached to the bookstore is the Studios, a beautiful space with several visiting art galleries. It’s definitely worth visiting after picking up some books.

We then headed to Duval Street, the most popular and busy street on Key West. This is where you’ll find most of the shops, bars, and restaurants – many offering live music.

Most of the restaurants are casual and don’t require reservations, so you can even choose a restaurant just by walking by. Two of the most popular ones for tourists include Sloppy Joe’s and Irish Kevin’s. During our most recent visit, we ate at Lucy’s Retired Surfers Bar & Restaurant , which also has other locations. We really enjoyed the atmosphere as well as our meals and drinks.

Before going back to the ship, we stopped at Mallory Square, an area with some great souvenir shops and kiosks. We made sure to visit the Cuban Coffee Queen, a coffee shop in the indoor building adjacent to the square. It’s a great place to pick up a cup of coffee or a snack before heading back to your ship.

You can really have your choice of experience at the Port of Key West – from adventure excursions to the casual walking around that we did. Just keep in mind that if you do want to participate in an excursion, it’s always best to book those in advance.

While musicians, jugglers, mimes and other performers provide entertainment, the sun sinks slowly below the horizon as sunset cruise boats sail by in Key West Harbor. Dining opportunities in the island city are as enticing as the sunset. Cuisine choices are varied and unique, but most restaurants feature great area seafood such as shrimp, Florida lobster, conch chowder, local fish and stone crab claws. Key lime pie is a heavenly end to an exquisite meal.

Florida Senate Bill 280 – A Potential New Hurdle for Key West

2022 is setting up to be round 2 in what is turning into a battle between the State of Florida and Key West with regard to the city’s cruise ship restrictions. While the City of Key West continues to explore options to restore cruise ship restrictions following Florida’s 2021 preemption , a new State Senate bill would make it more difficult for a city or county to pass a local ordinance that could negatively affect businesses within the ordinance’s jurisdiction is making the committee rounds.

FL SB 280 Local Ordinances 20220121

CS/CS/SB 280: Local Ordinances , proposed by Senator Travis Hutson , if passed by the State would “authorize courts to assess and award reasonable attorney fees and costs and damages in certain civil actions filed against local governments; requiring a board of county commissioners to prepare or cause to be prepared a business impact estimate before the enactment of a proposed ordinance; requiring a governing body of a municipality to prepare or cause to be prepared a business impact estimate before the enactment of a proposed ordinance, etc.”

If the bill is passed in the current revision, it will add a hurdle for a local governments – they would need to prepare the business impact estimate for public review. The bill would then prohibit local officials from enforcing an ordinance if there is a legal challenge to the ordinance. In the case of the anticipated cruise ship ordinance, there is a high percentage chance there will be a legal challenge from stakeholders in Key West.

At the time of publication, the bill has been voted favorably by both the Community Affairs (6 Yeas/2 Nays) and Rules (14 Yeas/2 Nays) committees . If you followed last year’s proceedings, you already know this is not the final bill text, if it makes it out of committee, the bill will proceed to through the process of both houses of the Florida Legislature which will inevitably result in multiple amendments which could change the overall impact of the bill with respect to any Key West cruise ship ordinances.

Last fall, Disney Cruise Line removed Key West from the current slate of available sailings, and ultimately this does not impact any upcoming cruises. The City of Key West attorney recommended the city not enact an ordinance that mirror the referendums. Now, it sounds like the cruise lines are in discussion with Key West on a possible compromise.

Regardless, this bill could result in future impacts related to this ongoing battle for Key West and the cruise industry as a whole.

A DCL primer for Disney World people

A DCL primer for Disney World people

Lots of people enjoy going to the Disney parks and want to consider branching out to new areas but aren’t sure where to start.

That’s why we’ve put together this Disney Cruise Line primer to help you get started if cruising is new to you.

When we teach people how to plan trips to Walt Disney World, we like to use a 6-step planning process to make sure all of the decisions are being made in the right order.

We’re going to adapt that for cruising in order to walk you through the basics.

In this article

Step 1: pick a cruise

Choosing travel dates for a Disney World trip is usually a matter of comparing your availability to crowd calendars or events that are scheduled, but picking a cruise includes a lot more factors that might make this step harder (though other steps – like dining – are much easier for a cruise).

Factors to consider when picking a cruise:

  • Your availability
  • Length of cruise – lots of options available from 2-15 nights in length. We recommend 4-5 nights minimum for a first cruise to give you time to learn and enjoy the ship.
  • Departure port – is the place that it’s departing easily accessible to you? If you’re a Disney World person who wants to try DCL, cruises out of Port Canaveral might be easiest to create a land/sea trip.
  • Itinerary – is the cruise stopping in places you want to visit?
  • Ship – Disney has 6 ships that vary in size, age, and amenities
  • Price – the cost of each cruise can vary wildly. Booking early is your best bet for getting the lowest price.

Use DCL’s filter tool to narrow down your options based on your criteria and/or check out the chart below that compares all of the ships.

Step 2: choose your stateroom

For Disney World trips, this step would be all about choosing your hotel and room type, but it’s about choosing your stateroom when cruising.

Unlike hotels, cruises allow you to pick your exact room so you’ll know what type of room you’re getting and where it’ll be located on the ship.

(There’s also the option to choose an unassigned room for a lower cost which allows Disney Cruise Line to assign you closer to your cruise date. These are called guarantee rooms. Get more details .)

When choosing a stateroom, you’ll want to consider these things:

  • Cost – bigger rooms cost more, interior rooms can save you money, etc.
  • Type of room – room size, bed configuration, interior/exterior, etc.
  • Location on the ship – forward (front) vs midship vs aft (back), port side (left side as you face the front of the ship) vs starboard (right side), and which deck (lower decks are often better for motion sickness, upper decks have better views)

While researching, you may want to search “[ship name] [stateroom]” for pics, videos, and reviews.

Step 3: make a daily plan

If this were Disney World, you’d be choosing which parks to visit each day of your trip. Since it’s a cruise with a preset itinerary, you’ll want to decide what activities to do each day of your cruise instead.

The tricky thing about knowing what’s happening on your cruise is that you have some parts you already know (days at sea, ports) and some you won’t easily know all the details about (when is pirate night, is there a formal night, etc.)

The schedule is available to concierge guests about 140 days before the cruise begins by emailing [email protected] .

Concierge guests will often share that schedule in cruise FB Groups. Sites sometimes have Personal Navigators (printed schedules) from recent cruises that can also give you much more detail on what’s happening each day.

disney cruise ship in key west

For days at sea:

  • There will be lots of onboard activities you can do for free. You’ll be able to find the whole list in the DCL app during your cruise. We recommend hearting the things you’re interested in which will put them in your plans.
  • Activities you can pay extra to do. This can include things like mixology classes, Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique, spa services, etc.

disney cruise ship in key west

For port days:

  • You can choose to stay on the ship. The activities above are available on port days as well if you choose to stay on the ship. For example, we always stay on the ship in Nassau, Bahamas, because it’s not a port we like and the ship is quieter on those days.
  • You can choose what to do when you get off the ship. If you get off at a port, you can choose what to do which could include just walking around, but often includes booking port adventures (excursions). Booking through DCL guarantees they’ll take care of you in the event of anything happening during your port adventure, but it also often means the activities cost more money or have more limited options. Booking on your own can give you more options at a lower cost, but if the port adventure operator doesn’t get you back in time (a rare event for a reputable company) the ship will leave without you boarding and you’ll have to figure out how to meet up with your cruise again. We highly recommend reading reviews of port adventures as the description given by the cruise line or operator doesn’t always thoroughly explain how it works or what’s included.

Themed nights during your cruise

In addition to sea and port days, you might also want to look at themed nights on your cruise.

Most or all Disney cruises have themed nights such as pirate night, Frozen night, formal night, semi-formal night, etc. You’ll likely find out the schedule for these in your cruise FB Group.

disney cruise ship in key west

Participation in those is totally optional, but if you’re interested in partaking, be sure to add it to your daily plans so you can dress for the occasion.

Live productions

Every ship has a theater called Walt Disney Theater where stage productions take place a few nights during your cruise.

disney cruise ship in key west

Some of these are stage versions of popular Disney movies (Tangled, Little Mermaid, Cinderella, etc.) and others are original cruise line productions (Golden Mickeys, Disney Seas the Adventure, Disney Dreams).

We highly recommend making time to see them as it’s 1 of the things that Disney Cruise Line does so well.

There will be 2 showings on the nights that the productions are running. For good seating, try to line up 20-30 minutes beforehand.

Step 4: planning dining

This step of the planning is much easier when cruising than going to Disney World since it’s mostly all planned out for you.

On Disney Cruise ships, there are usually these dining options available:

  • 1 large casual buffet location – large buffet available for breakfast and lunch
  • 3 main Table Service restaurants – themed dining rooms that you rotate through each night of your cruise, has a main dining time or late dining time option
  • Quick Service locations – a few different options, often located near the pool
  • 1 or 2 adult-exclusive restaurants – requires reservations, costs extra, has a dress code, available for brunch or dinner
  • Room service – food is included with your cruise cost, but you’ll want to tip $1-3 for a small order, $4-5 for a larger order
  • Miscellaneous areas – various lounges, coffee spots, etc., throughout the ship. Often costs extra.

All of the food listed above is included unless noted.

disney cruise ship in key west

Some tips related to dining on your cruise:

  • You will rotate between the 3 main Table Service restaurants throughout your cruise, keeping the same table number and servers who rotate with you.
  • You won’t know which order you’ll be dining in them until you can connect to the ship’s wifi at the cruise terminal or on board. If, for some reason, you don’t don’t like your rotation, you can go to Guest Services on the ship to see if they can change it.
  • Your stateroom will have breakfast order door hangers (usually in the desk drawer). You can jot down your breakfast order, leave it on your door, and it’ll be delivered at the time specified. This is completely free since all room service is included. Unless you’re staying concierge, room service breakfast options are really limited. You’ll want to head to a restaurant if you want hot breakfast food.

disney cruise ship in key west

  • Eating at the adult-exclusive restaurants requires a reservation. These spots can be really competitive, particularly on days at sea. The service and food are incredible, so we do highly recommend them if you want something special during your cruise.
  • The 1 large casual buffet location on each ship is often very busy and crowded, but you can often find smaller locations near the pools that are less crowded .
  • You’ll need to pick a dining time for your 3 rotational Table Service meals . Early dining is usually at 5:45 p.m., while late dining starts at 8 p.m. We’ve done both and prefer early dining because we like the flow of having dinner, going to see the ship’s evening show, and then heading for nighttime activities and bars. However, earlier dining does have more kids and may require getting back to the ship too early, depending on your port and port adventure times.

disney cruise ship in key west

Step 5: booking and checking in

In this step, let’s talk about booking and check-in processes for Disney cruises because it’s often 1 of the most confusing parts of the whole process.

Now that you’ve made some decisions for your cruise, you can now book your trip.

You can do that on your own, but we highly recommend booking with Small World Vacations who can not only provide professional help but offer you onboard credit that you won’t be able to get on your own.

Once your deposit is put down, be sure to join your cruise’s FB Group which is an invaluable resource as you plan. Search “[ship name] [cruise date]” to find yours (for example “Disney Magic January 10-15 2025”).

FYI – booking for the items below opens at midnight eastern time.

Step 6: add extra magic

We always like to include this step in any trip plan because it’s a chance to customize and have fun with your plans.

For a Disney Cruise, consider some of these options:

  • Bring special outfits to wear for themed nights (as mentioned above).
  • Participate in Fish Extenders which allow you to hang something from the fish hook outside your room that other people can deposit trinkets into while you deposit gifts you’ve brought into theirs. This is usually organized in your cruise’s FB Group.
  • Decorate your door. The stateroom doors are magnetic (sometimes the walls are too) so they’re fun to decorate with magnets that are often used to hang lights, dry erase boards, and other decorative items.

disney cruise ship in key west

  • Purchasing onboard gifts. This is a fun way to have your stateroom decorated when you arrive or have gifts delivered during your cruise. Many onboard gifts are exclusive to each ship.
  • Get a free call from a character. Pre-recorded phone calls from Disney characters wishing you well on your sailing are a fun way to get the entire travel group excited about an upcoming Disney cruise. After you’ve booked your cruise, visit  My Reservations  under  My Disney Cruise  and select “Request Call” beside the Free Character Call header. This link will take you to a site where you can choose a Disney character, enter your phone number, schedule a call time, and provide additional information for your Character Call.

Carnival Cruise Line makes a bold statement on a divisive topic

While the efforts were not overly successful, Target faced boycotts — more than once — over its moves to be inclusive.

The chain faced a backlash from conservative customers over its decision to allow shoppers to use the bathrooms that matched their gender identities rather than their birth genders.

In 2023 the chain also had to remove its Pride Month collection from stores because it believed selling the items put its frontline employees in danger.

Related: Carnival Cruise Line forced to make beverage package change

Walt Disney ( DIS ) has faced a right-wing backlash simply for including diverse characters in its movies and films. That has led Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who has made Disney has favorite target in his so-called war on woke, to accuse the company of "sexualizing children."

Disney CEO Bob Iger has called that claim "preposterous and inaccurate."

Bud Light, of course, faced a massive and incredibly damaging boycott after it made a small marketing deal with the transgender social-media influencer Dylan Mulvaney. It wasn't a TV commercial or even a significant deal.

Mulvaney was hired to promote to the LGBTQ+ community that she liked to drink the Anheuser-Busch InBev ( BUD ) brand. This, for some reason, outraged Kid Rock, who kicked off a massive boycott of Bud Light, which saw the brand lose about 25% of its sales on what appears to be a long-term basis.

Making any comment on transgender issues puts a company at risk of backlash. Carnival Cruise Line Brand Ambassador John Heald, however, recently addressed a key topic for transgender inclusion on cruises.

Carnival shares a key policy

Cruise lines are generally inclusive. Carnival, Royal Caribbean, MSC Cruise, Virgin Voyages, and other major cruise lines all have LGBTQ+ meetup events on their cruises. In a broad sense, when you bring 2,000 to 6,000 people together on a cruise ship (or really anywhere), you're going to get a diverse crowd.

All the cruise lines work hard to make their ships safe spaces where people can enjoy their vacations even though the person sitting next to them at the pool deck may have very different political views.

Carnival room attendants, much like Royal Caribbean's, are given the names of their passengers as they appear on the cruise manifest.

It's common for your room steward (and any employee who sees your name when you make a purchase using your room key) to address you by your first name. Usually, they precede your name with a "Mr.," Ms." or "Mrs." Some people, however, take issue with that and Heald shared his thoughts.

"Yesterday somebody mentioned they did not want to be referred to by their first name by the crew. This particular post received over 50 different likes or thumbs-up things," he wrote.

He then shared how passengers can correct that.

"So I thought it best I say again that if you do not wish to be addressed by your first name by our wonderful crewmembers please simply tell them. Writing to me after you’ve left the ship complaining means there is nothing I can do to help you," he said.

"If you have a problem with being referred to in the wrong way, for any reason, please speak to the crew, they will gladly listen. They will smile, and they will address you as you wish. It really is that simple."

Carnival talks about a transgender issue

Names are a particularly challenging issue in the transgender community. Carnival, Heald explained, makes every effort to be inclusive and supportive, but crew members can act only off of the information they have in front of them.

"In response to Joyce, and I’m sure there will be a few others in the same situation. If you have a transgender child, and they have not legally changed their name, then at first, the cabin attendant is going to call them by the name they have been given on the manifest," he wrote.

That mistake can't be avoided, and the cruise line will quickly correct it as soon as crew members are made aware.

"So, please don’t get angry, it’s not their fault. It really isn’t. But I do understand that it’s upsetting, and we certainly do not want to misgender” them," he wrote.

"So, again this is just a simple solution of explaining to the cabin attendant and any other crewmember how they wish to be referred to, and as always my wonderful wonderful colleagues will comply and make everyone smile. Thank you for your understanding."

How the Key Bridge Collapsed in Baltimore: Maps and Photos

By Weiyi Cai ,  Agnes Chang ,  Lauren Leatherby ,  Lazaro Gamio ,  Leanne Abraham and Scott Reinhard

On Tuesday, a major bridge in Baltimore collapsed into the water seconds after it was struck by a cargo ship, sending vehicles on the bridge into the river below. The ship lost power and issued a mayday call shortly before it hit the bridge.

A video shows the cargo ship striking the bridge and the resulting collapse of the bridge.

The ship, a 948-foot-long cargo vessel called Dali, was about a half hour into its journey toward Colombo, Sri Lanka, when it hit a main pillar of the bridge. All crew members are safe, according to the ship’s owners.

Follow our live coverage .

A mayday call from the ship gave officials enough time to stop traffic at both ends of the bridge. The waters where the bridge collapsed are about 50 feet deep. By Tuesday morning, six construction workers who had been fixing potholes on the bridge remained missing as divers and other emergency workers on boats and helicopters continued to search for them. Two others had been rescued, and one was in the hospital.

The Francis Scott Key Bridge was opened in 1977 and carried more than 12.4 million vehicles last year. The bridge was one of the three major ways to cross the Patapsco River and formed part of Baltimore’s beltway.

The Port of Baltimore is a major trade hub that handled a record amount of foreign cargo last year. It is an especially important destination — the nation’s largest by volume last year — for deliveries of cars and light trucks.

Overall, Baltimore was the 17th biggest port in the United States in 2021, ranked by total tons, according to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics. The bridge collapse brought marine traffic there to a standstill, with seven cargo or tanker ships stranded in the harbor as of Tuesday afternoon.

Gov. Wes Moore declared a state of emergency for Maryland and said that his office was in close communication with Pete Buttigieg, the U.S. transportation secretary. The White House issued a statement saying that President Biden had been briefed on the collapse.
