Sierra Backcountry Ski Tours

This is our video description of what it is like to take a ski tour with with SMC

We are probably biased, but we believe that this is what the Sierra Nevada has in spades; long tours in the Sierra with warm days, perfect corn snow, spectacular scenery and no crowds. We are stunned that people flock from California to Europe to ski, ignoring the best spring skiing in the world in their backyard.

These trips do take a certain skill level and we suggest that those starting out start with our Introduction to Touring Skills. Before undertaking one of the advanced tours you need to have done one of the easier ones.

You need to carry a multi-day pack and be comfortable on skis so these tours are not for everyone. But if you are prepared these are the best tours you will find anywhere.

Introductory Tours

Hilton Creek Mini Tour — Two days

This is a great tour to start on and fits readily into a weekend and it even has that skiers dream; more downhill than up hill. We head up the Rock Creek road a mile or so before cutting up onto Hilton Bench and our first night amidst lakes and lodgepole forest. After a short tour near camp, Day Two finishes with a long gliding run down to Highway 395 near Crowley Lake and a shuttle back to the vehicles.

Mammoth to June — Three Days

This tour from Mammoth to June Lake is an ideal introduction to backcountry touring. It is only three days long, a perfect long weekend. The skiing is moderate and the scenery outrageously beautiful. In the summer the Thousand Island Lake and Agnew Pass area is a popular destination, but in winter it is deserted and perhaps even more beautiful than ever. In fact we like this tour so much that we offer it several times during late winter and spring.

Intermediate Tours

Yosemite High Country — Five Days

This tour is quite possibly one of the best introductions to longer backcountry ski touring. It takes one into some of the most beautiful terrain in the Sierra Nevada, the skiing terrain is straightforward, and the traveling days are not too long, allowing time to drop the packs and to enjoy unencumbered skiing. The initial part of the tour follows the line of our Mammoth to June ski tour and this continuation is really no more difficult – just longer and more fun. Everyday brings a new vista and the campsites are perfect. What else is needed?

Beneath the Palisades — Four Days

This tour is not well known, except by locals, and in some years no one ventures into this part of the Sierra during the winter and spring. The crossings of the passes are short, steep, and high linking together two of the most beautiful areas in the Sierra’s Dusy and Palisade Basins. Staying on the west side of the divide for most of the tour, the jagged crest of the Palisades is never more than a mile away as we hug the slopes of some of the Sierra’s highest peaks. Days are not too long and we try to find time to ski some of the fantastic slopes along the way.

Ionian Basin — Six Days

The Ionian Basin sits in the heart of Kings Canyon National Park, above the rugged gorge of Le Conte Canyon. Mt. Goddard dominates the region and the gentle slopes on its southeast side offer one of the great ski descents of the Sierra, but so remote that it is seldom skied (except by us!). We plan on at least two nights camped in the heart of the Ionian, allowing several days skiing with only a daypack. Remote and little known, this is a wonderful loop trip that should be on everyone’s wish list.

Ritter Range Circumnavigation — Five Days

Anyone who has driven Highway 395 towards Mammoth has seen the Ritter Range on the skyline with the large bulky peaks of Ritter and Banner alongside the serrated spires of the Minarets. Even better is the view from up on Mammoth Mountain where the range and its peaks dominates the skyline and in winter the snow covered slopes and valleys just ask to be skied. Our goal is a loop starting and ending in Mammoth and along the way hopefully summitting the main peaks of the range.

Tour de Darwin — Four Days

A great loop tour, this trip starts and finishes near North Lake, above Bishop Creek. We ascend Paiute Creek up into the wonderful ski terrain in the Alpine Col region. With a base on the Darwin Bench our itinerary allows a layover day to enjoy long runs on nearby Goethe Peak or perhaps Mt. Darwin. Highlights include great views of the entire Evolution area and northern Kings Canyon National Park. We find this tour to be a great warm up for the Sierra High Route.

Paiute to Rock Creek — Five Days

A true Sierra Crest tour, this is one of our favorite moderate ski trips. The tour features gentle skiing across Humphreys Basin, a spectacular traverse around Bear Creek Spire, and the exhilarating open skiing down the bowls of Granite Park and Rock Creek Canyon. As a five-day trip our itinerary allows plenty of time for taking a run or two without a full pack at the end of the day. If you want to make the trip longer pair this with its continuation along the crest: the Rock Creek to Mammoth tour.

Advanced Tours

Sierra High Route — Six or Seven Days

This is “it”; the ultimate Sierra Classic ski tour. First skied in its entirety in 1975 by Sierra veteran Dave Beck, this subtle line linking high passes and long contours around huge snow filled bowls has become the goal of many a backcountry skier. Starting in the low desert of the Eastern Sierra and crossing some of the more rugged parts of the Sierra Nevada this is not a tour for the beginning skier. Often compared to the famous “Haute Route” of the European Alps or Colorado’s Tenth Mountain Trail, this is a true extended wilderness ski tour, with no huts, few other people and no nearby roads. For the experienced backcountry skier with good backcountry skills it will be a truly outstanding venture; the essence of ski mountaineering.

Itinerary: We offer two variation starts to this wonderful route

  • The classic and original route from Symmes Creek and over Shepherd Pass
  • The slightly longer, and our favorite, variation start from Onion Valley, over Kearsarge Pass and rejoining the regular route at Milestone Creek.

Rock Creek to Mammoth — Four Days If you do not have time for one of the longer advanced tours but still want some great skiing and challenging pass crossing try this tour. We have abreviated this tour some from past years and now start off with a bang climbing over the trickiest pass first, Halfmoon Pass. From here we stay close to the crest and head north finishing at the gustatory delights of Mammoth.

Monarch Divide — Seven Days While the Sierra High Route has become the most popular of all trans-Sierra tours there are numerous other tours that are just as good but are unknown, except to locals and Sierra experts. The Monarch Divide is one of these. This has easily become our favorite Sierra ski tour so if you have already skied the High Route or want a challenging remote tour where few others venture this is a your perfect option. The route stays high, rarely dropping below 11,000 feet as it follows the entire crest of the Cirque Divide.

Clarence King and Gardiner Basin — Five Days This is the trip for the ski mountaineer. Not only is the skiing great, the pass crossing are technical and then we included ascents and ski descents of mounts Cotter and Gardiner. No one else goes here so expect wilderness ski mountaineering at it Sierra best.

The Great Western Divide — Nine Days The longest tour in the Sierra, this covers the highest and most rugged terrain in the range. We start at Kearsarge Pass and finish at Mineral King on the west side. This is the ultimate trip for the Sierra connoisseur.

Cañon de la Zorra & Sol De Mayo Waterfall Hike First Timer Guide

A short hike in Cañon de la Zorra (Fox Canyon) leads you to what feels like a desert oasis in the middle of the gorgeous Sierra de la Laguna mountains of Santiago, Baja California Sur. The towering 40-foot Cascada Sol De Mayo Waterfall pours into a turquoise-blue swimming hole below, then flows down a refreshing river through the striking desert canyon.

As a Mexico travel fanatic, I would argue that the Fox Canyon waterfall hike is one of the very best day trips from Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo, yet few visitors make the journey to this stunning location. Cañon de la Zorra remains fairly uncrowded, even on weekends, and primarily attracts Mexican tourists. But with several local tourism companies starting to offer day trips to this stunning Santiago waterfall, Cascada Sol De Mayo is steadily gaining popularity among international travelers.

This  Fox Canyon Waterfall and Sol De Mayo BCS travel guide  will tell you everything you need to know about visiting this gorgeous natural landmark, whether you intend to take a tour or visit on your own.

The Ultimate Guide to Visiting Cascada Sol De Mayo & Cañon de la Zorra

The famous Sierra Laguna Waterfall hike is known by many names. Before we go any further, let’s clear up any confusion. These are the names used to refer to Sol De Mayo Waterfall in Santiago, BCS: Fox Canyon Waterfall, Cascada Sol De Mayo, Sierra Laguna Waterfall, and sometimes Santiago Waterfall .

Sol De Mayo Waterfall is located in Cañon de la Zorra, which means Fox Canyon in English . The canyon and waterfall are located on private property, and you have to pay a small entrance fee ($200 pesos). There are other hikes in Fox Canyon, but most visitors hike to Sol De Mayo Waterfall and spend a day swimming and taking in the surrounding beauty.

As a side note, the waterfall in this article should not be confused with the Santiago Apoala waterfalls in Oaxaca, Mexico (which are jawdroppingly beautiful and totally worth visiting).

Cascada Sol De Mayo Waterfall

The 40-foot Sol De Mayo waterfall looks smaller from the water below, but just as beautiful!

I visited Cañon de la Zorra and Cascada Sol De Mayo on a road trip stop in Santiago BCS on my way between Cabo and La Paz. It was my favorite stop on our Baja road trip, and we almost decided against visiting but I’m so glad we went! Whether you’re looking for waterfalls in Cabo San Lucas, exploring other Baja California Sur towns, or road-tripping, make sure you carve out some time to relax and hike at this beautiful canyon. You won’t regret it!

Okay, now let’s get into everything you need to know before visiting this serene Fox Canyon waterfall!

Where is Cañon de la Zorra and the Sol De Mayo Waterfall?

Cañon de la Zorra (and Sol De Mayo Waterfall) are located inside the Rancho Ecologico Sol De Mayo, a privately owned ranch in Santiago, BCS, Mexico. Located in the Sierra Laguna mountains of Baja California Sur, the ranch is a good 25+ minute drive from the center of Santiago. Santiago itself is an hour from San Jose del Cabo, an hour and fifteen minutes from Cabo San Lucas, and two hours from La Paz.

How to get to Santiago and the Sol De Mayo Waterfall Trailhead

Self-guided directions.

You need a car to get to Fox Canyon on your own.  Looking for a guided tour?   Scroll down for top-rated tour recommendations with reviews and ratings.

Santiago From Cabo

The drive from Cabo to Santiago is between an hour and an hour and fifteen minutes, depending on the area of Los Cabos.

To drive from San Jose del Cabo, head north on Highway 1 for about an hour until you see the sign for Santiago (after about 50 minutes). Turn left toward Santiago and drive about five minutes into town.

To drive from Cabo San Lucas, drive toward San Jose del Cabo and get on Highway 1 North (you may enter San Jose on Highway 1, depending on where you’re coming from). After about an hour and ten minutes, you’ll see the sign for Santiago and turn left, driving five minutes into two.

Santiago From La Paz

Sol Del Mayo is sometimes called the La Paz waterfall hike, but the waterfall is actually about two hours outside of La Paz. It’s certainly worth visiting Sol De Mayo if you’re in La Paz, though. Follow these directions to reach Santiago:

There are two ways to drive toward the Sierra Laguna mountains from La Paz: Highway 1 and Highway 286. There isn’t much of a time difference, but check your GPS to see which route is faster based on traffic and your exact starting point.

Highway 1 and 286 meet near La Venta, converging into Highway 1. Keep driving south on Highway 1 through Los Barriles until you see the sign for Santiago after about two hours of driving. From there you can drive into town, which takes about five minutes.

Be warned: some sections of the road to Santiago are very windy and curvy. Be careful as you drive and ensure you’re driving in full daylight in both directions.

Santiago to the Sol De Mayo Trailhead

I recommend pre-loading Google Maps directions to Cañón de la Zorra before you leave Santiago as the internet is spotty outside the city, and the drive can be a bit confusing.

Keep in mind that that the drive to the trailhead on a dirt road, so drive carefully. You don’t need four-wheel drive, though. I drove to Fox Canyon in a sedan with no problems.

How to Visit the Sol de Mayo Waterfall Without a Tour

Spending a Canon del Zorra is easy, even without a tour guide. From Santiago, head to Rancho Ecologico Sol De Mayo. I recommend using Google Maps (download your map beforehand as there is no service) to get to the ranch. It’s a 20-minute drive down a dusty dirt road, but it really felt longer than 20 minutes to me. Keep your map up to assure you’re headed the right way.

You’ll arrive at the ranch, and walk toward the Sol de Mayo sign (pictured below). There is a small ticket booth to the left. If no one is in the booth, say “hola,” and someone should come out to greet you.

Sol de Mayo Sign

Pay the $200 peso fee (in cash) and then walk under the Sol de Mayo sign, to the right, toward the trail. From there, the walk to the waterfall is only about 15 minutes. There are plenty of gorgeous vista points overlooking the waterfall and steam below, so be sure to stop along the way for photos.

Once you arrive at the base of the waterfall, jump in and enjoy the water!

Sol de Mayo BCS Waterfall Hike FAQs

What type of facilities are there at rancho ecologico sol de mayo.

There are no facilities at the base of the waterfall, but near the parking lot, you’ll find bathrooms, a restaurant (not always open), and cabins for rent.

What should you pack for visiting Cascada Sol De Mayo?

I recommend bringing the following items:

  • Walking shoes : You don’t need hiking shoes, or even tennis shoes. The hike to the waterfall is short, and you can do it in sandals if you’re comfortable climbing over a few rocks in your sandals. If you intend to hike more throughout the canyon, bring comfortable walking shoes.
  • Towel : Depending on the time of year, you might dry off in the sun without needing a towel, but it can still be nice to have if you want to change or sit on it. I love  Nomadix towels for travel.
  • Bathing suit : Wear something you can swim in!
  • Water : Always be prepared with a reusable water bottle. The canyon is hot and hydration is important.
  • (Optional) GoPro or waterproof phone case : Make sure you can capture photos of this beautiful spot without risking getting your phone wet. I have a  GoPro Hero11 , which has 27 megapixels and screens on both sides, and I love it!

What else is there to do in Santiago BCS?

Santiago is a small town, but it’s also the gateway to the Sierra Laguna mountains. There are tons of hikes in the area, as well as hot springs. My favorite hot springs in Santiago are the Santa Rita Hot Springs , which are just about 20 minutes from Sol de Mayo! Visiting both in one day is the perfect way to experience the wonder of Baja’s Sierra Laguna.

Final Thoughts: Cañon de la Zorra & Sol De Mayo Waterfall Hike

If you have a trip to Los Cabos Cabo or Baja California Sur coming up soon, make sure to add Fox Canyon to your itinerary. Don’t miss spending a day (or afternoon) swimming beneath waterfalls, you deserve it!

As you visit Cañon de la Zorra and the surrounding areas, respect the local ranchos and other tourists. Follow the park rules by keeping noise low and cleaning up after yourself. On your way out of town, grab food in Santiago and support some local businesses. Sustainable tourism is key to protecting stunning places like this, and it all starts with us!

Sierra Canyon’s ‘Juju farewell tour’ faces its toughest test against Country Day

Two months ago, when her Chatsworth Sierra Canyon High’s office was stuffed with boxes of jerseys and a run at back-to-back state championships was hypothetical, 11th-year girls’ basketball coach Alicia Komaki leaned against her desk and mused that — gasp — the Trailblazers might actually lose a few games this season.

She knew going into the season that it would be the toughest schedule any of her teams had played. And Sierra Canyon played 13 straight games to start the season against out-of-state teams, three of which were ranked in ESPN’s national top 25. They didn’t play a home game until the end of December. Komaki half-joked she slept in her own bed only three times last month.

So she took it a step further.

“I think it’s the toughest schedule anybody’s ever put together,” Komaki said.

There was a special opportunity this season, Komaki said, to put together that schedule in national anticipation of transcendent USC commit Juju Watkins’ senior season , which the coach has dubbed the “Juju farewell tour.”

Somehow, the tour bus hasn’t hit a single pothole. The Trailblazers have gone 14-0 but will face their toughest test yet Saturday, taking on a 16-1 La Jolla Country Day team in the Chosen-1s Invitational at USC’s Galen Center — Watkins’ stomping ground next season.

Could Saturday bring that first loss Komaki anticipated?

“One-thousand percent,” Komaki said. “They’re one of the top five teams in the country. We’re not untouchable. And that’s kind of the fun part of this year is, we’re not just doing this [schedule] knowing we’re automatically getting wins everywhere we go.”

The Sierra Canyon-La Jolla girls game is at 6:30 p.m., part of a schedule of four games in the LeBron James- and Nike-sponsored tournament. The Santa Ana Mater Dei girls and boys play the Akron (Ohio) St. Vincent-St. Mary, girls and boys at 3 and 4:30 p.m., respectively, while the Sierra Canyon boys take on Marietta (Ga.) Wheeler at 8 p.m.

Saturday could bring one of the best games in recent girls’ basketball showdowns. The last three Country Day-Sierra Canyon games, dating to 2019-20, have been decided by a total of four points. This season features two of the best teams in each program’s history, cores intact and improved from the Trailblazers’ one-point win over the Torreys in the CIF Open Division state tournament last year.

Sierra Canyon, Etiwanda stay unbeaten, remain at the top of girls’ basketball rankings

Sierra Canyon is No. 1 and Etiwanda No. 2 in the latest top 20 Southern California girls’ basketball rankings provided by CalHiSports.com.

Back for Country Day are four players averaging double figures: the athletic Taj Roberts, shooter and UC San Diego commit Sumayah Sugapong, crafty guard and NIL star Jada Williams, and 6-foot-4 interior presence Breya Cunningham. Williams and Cunningham are both committed to Arizona, and share a special point guard-big connection — La Jolla coach Terri Bamford called Cunningham, who averages 19.4 points and 2.8 blocks a game, “one of the best post players in the country.”

As always, La Jolla’s defense will have to throw the kitchen sink at Watkins — but it’s not that easy. Last year, Bamford said, they tried to double team Watkins by using Cunningham to help off Sierra Canyon senior forward Crystal Wang. It didn’t work. Wang, a talented scorer who just led the Trailblazers with 21 points against Studio City Harvard-Westlake on Tuesday, had “the game of her life,” Bamford remembered.

Guard Izela Arenas, junior daughter of former NBA All-Star guard Gilbert Arenas, changes gears and directions on her drives to the rim like a Chevrolet from the “Fast & Furious” movies. And Mackenly Randolph, junior daughter of former All-Star forward Zach Randolph, has honed an inside-out game and is relentless on the boards.

Plus, the Trailblazers have an intriguing piece to throw at Cunningham in freshman center Emilia Krstevski, who held her own in an early-season matchup against South Grand Prairie (Texas) and star junior center Adhel Tac.

“Putting that kind of talent on display … people will be excited about it,” Bamford said. “It’s fun basketball, it’s high-scoring basketball. I think as role models for both high schools, younger players growing up right now watching them play, [it] inspires young kids to be, ‘Hey, I want to be like that.’”

Others to watch

— Mater Dei 6-foot guard Addison Deal, a summer transfer from Santa Monica Pacifica Christian, is one of the top guards in the country. She’s a triple-double threat flanked by senior guard and Concordia commit Hannah Vela and senior guard and Tennessee Chattanooga commit Caia Elisaldez on a deep 13-2 Monarch girls’ team that’s just a tier below Sierra Canyon and Etiwanda in the Southern Section girls’ basketball hierarchy.

—The Sierra Canyon boys aren’t the only team at the Chosen-1’s Invitational with royal bloodlines. The 13-2 Mater Dei boys include freshman Cole Leinart, son of USC Heisman Trophy winner Matt Leinart; freshman Malloy Smith, son of NBA champion Kenny Smith; and freshman Che Brogan, son of Mater Dei great Tom Lewis. Brogan, in particular, is a 6-6 standout making an immediate influence on a young Monarchs team.

—USC hoops fans in attendance will have plenty to get excited about. They can see future Trojans in Watkins and 2023 USC men’s commits Isaiah Collier and Arrinten Page, talented players for an 8-4 Wheeler team that’ll give the Trailblazer boys one of their toughest opponents of the season.
