Wyoming wildlife, spotted.

Experience the wild side of Jackson Hole on a guided safari.

Jackson Hole is part of the 20-million-acre Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem (GYE), the last intact temperate ecosystem in the lower 48 states. The GYE is the only habitat where the same wild, big-game animals (wolves, elk, deer, bison, moose, pronghorn, bighorn sheep) that roamed this land when Lewis and Clarke first traveled through it are still here today. On a wildlife tour, local guides lead you out of crowded areas to observe and teach you about the many species of wildlife that call Jackson Hole home. In addition to spotting wildlife, guides are experts in local flora and fauna, the history of the area, and conservation efforts. Most importantly, guides ensure you have a safe experience that takes you out of the driver’s seat so you can sit back, relax, and take in the sights.

Questions about view wildlife in Jackson Hole

What kind of wildlife will i see.

The Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, one of the few remaining intact ecosystems on Earth, is home to more than 200 species of animals including wolves, black and grizzly bears, bison (did you know that Yellowstone bison comprise the nation’s largest bison population on public land?), elk, and nearly 60 other species of mammals. We’re also home to more than 300 species of birds including fantastic raptors like bald eagles, ospreys, and peregrine falcons. You might not see them, but we also have 16 species of fish, six species of reptiles (non-poisonous), and four species of amphibians.

Please help preserve this incredible natural treasure for future generations by observing wildlife from a distance, never feeding the animals, extinguishing wildfires, and driving slowly.

Wildlife Watching

Are there rules for wildlife watching?

Yes, and they exist to protect both you and the animals. No matter how harmless they look, wildlife is wild. Keep your distance, give bears, other large carnivores, and large nesting birds at least 100 yards of space, and give all other animals, including bison, elk, and moose, at least 25 yards of space.

When is the best time to see wildlife?

Wildlife tends to be most active during what locals consider to be the off seasons — April to May and October to November. These are the months that animals migrate between their summer and winter ranges and emerge from or prepare to go into their dens. Wildlife doesn’t disappear in July and August, but they do often rest during the heat of the day, so your best chance of seeing them is at dawn or dusk. When there’s snow on the ground, thousands of elk congregate on the National Elk Refuge, where you can take a sleigh ride into the middle of the herd. Winter is also the best time of year to spot wolves, since their dark coats are more visible against snow than sagebrush.

What do I do if I spot wildlife while driving?

It’s of utmost importance for both the safety of the wildlife and drivers to keep driving lanes clear at all times. If you spot wildlife while driving, pull entirely off the road in a designated pullout to limit roadside erosion and avoid traffic interruptions. Only get out of your vehicle if you can maintain the proper distance between yourself and the wildlife.

On average, more than 300 large animals are killed annually on Teton County roadways. To prevent wildlife collisions, observe the speed limit and be attentive, scan the edges of roads for wildlife, and take note of other drivers’ behavior to spot an indication of nearby wildlife. Familiarize yourself with wildlife collision hotspots at j jhwildlife.org/hotspots .

Grand Teton Tours

grand teton mountains in the fall

Jackson Hole is a very special place to visit as it has access to two incredible national parks. As well as easy access to Yellowstone, Grand Teton is Jackson’s backyard. The border of the park sits a mere 4.5 miles from downtown, and 1.5 miles from Teton Village. You are always only minutes from jaw-dropping scenery and exciting wildlife when you visit!

With so many breathtaking things to see, booking a tour can help remove the stress and guesswork of trying to make the most of your time. We offer several different Grand Teton tours – you’re sure to find something that will fit your particular interests and itinerary.

May-October Tours

Half-Day Tours

This tour is ideal for getting a taste of what Grand Teton has to offer from towering mountains to vast lakes, from fields of grazing bison to a moose munching in a pond. You might get your fill of scenic beauty from this tour before enjoying the many other activities Jackson has to offer, or you may see things that you want to return to for further exploration in your own time. Either way, you will be surprised how much you will see and learn in a morning or evening with one of our local guides!

Full Day Tours

Want to spend more time out of town and in the park? Slow down and take your time with a full day 8 hour Grand Teton tour. Starting early, you’ll spend the morning searching for wildlife during peak activity before pausing at a scenic spot for a picnic lunch. This tour allows for more time to explore some of the back roads and more hidden spots to see what animals you might stumble across, admire the seasonal wildflowers, and witness the majestic Teton mountain range from different viewpoints throughout the day. This tour is more immersive and allows your guide to dive deeper into the history, geology, wildlife, or whatever your personal interests are of the region.

Grand Teton Wildlife Tour and Scenic Float

Trying to decide between a wildlife safari and a float tour down the scenic Snake River? Why not both? We have partnered with Solitude Float Trips to create a special combination tour, providing you with an action-packed day of wildlife watching, a picnic lunch, and a 10-mile float tour all within Grand Teton National Park. What animals can I expect to see?

The Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem is home to an amazingly diverse list of wildlife species! Some of the most frequently observed animals on our safairs are elk, eagles, bison, moose, mule deer, and bears. Black bears are more common than grizzly bears, but both species are most often seen in spring and fall. Wolves are present, but these shy animals are a very uncommon sight in Grand Teton. Other critters such as badgers, coyotes, beavers, otters, and many many more live in this ecosystem, but are not an everyday occurrence! The thrill of wildlife is not knowing what’s around the corner. Every species has certain times of the year where they are more or less likely to be seen, so this will depend on the season in which you are visiting.

What highlights are there to see in Grand Teton?

Grand Teton National Park is rich in both geological wonders and human history. The spectacular Teton range is visible from most areas of the park, and they look different from every angle. Jenny Lake and Jackson Lake are stunning sights to see. Oxbow Bend is a popular spot for a picturesque view of Mount Moran and a great place to look for birds and aquatic species along the Snake River. Stand where Ansel Adams snapped his famous shot of the mountains from the Snake River Overlook. Mormon Row, where you can find the famous Moulton Barn, is a wonderful place to step into the past days of early settlers. There are many more beautiful and fascinating things to see, it would be impossible to list them all here!

What kind of vehicle will we be in?

We provide both private and public tours, but we keep our group sizes small, so you will not be on a big bus. We use spacious SUVs and passenger vans. This allows us to focus on individual guests more closely, have a more personable experience, and we can pull over easily for wildlife sightings!

My wife and I did the private snowcoach tour through Yellowstone- very few crowds, we saw more bison than people! Monica was simply fantastic as our Scenic Safaris tour guide. She was quite knowledgeable about the area and her fun personality added to the excitement of our adventure. We loved it, will book with Scenic Safaris again soon!

We took the Teton national park ATV morning tour with David and had what could be the highlight of the trip. He was super knowledgeable and had an entertaining way of transferring that knowledge to us - whether it be equipment management or Teton history and science facts. The ride was both awe-inspiring and adrenaline producing. Five stars!

We weren't sure if we'd like to drive around Yellowstone on our own or through a tour company. We are so glad we chose to do Scenic Safaris Yellowstone Lower Loop tour. It was absolutely fantastic! Our tour guide, Ryan was terrific. Extremely knowledgeable, courteous, efficient and helpful. Do not hesitate to book Scenic Safaris- it's the real deal!

We went on an all-day snowmobile tour to Togwotee. Our guide (Dakota)was GREAT! He was very knowledgeable about wildlife, flora, mountains, etc. He also really let us open the tour up with how fast / slow we wanted to go. We covered over 80 miles on the tour. We will definitely book with Scenic Safaris again in the future for another snowmobile tour!

We took a side-by-side tour with Irwin as our guide. He went above and beyond and took us to amazing places for great wildlife photos. We decided to book another tour with him (the Yellowstone Lower Loop). Irwin again delivered an experience that exceeded expectations. Thank you for a once in a lifetime trip and an experience we’ll never forget!

The Best Time to Go on a Snake River Float Trip

If you are wondering what is the best time to go on a Snake River float in Jackson Hole, then you will be happy to know that spring, summer, and fall are all great times of year to go floating in Jackson Hole.

Each season offers a unique experience on the Snake River!

  • Spring is the early season for rafting, and the season falls between the months of April to June. Despite being the early season, most rafters consider spring to be one of the best times of year to raft Jackson Hole. Spring in Wyoming can be chilly, but it also presents the perfect opportunity for rafters to enjoy small groups and see the most animals during a scenic float trip in Grand Teton.
  • Summer (July & August) offers prime rafting weather in Jackson Hole. Since the temperatures hover in the low to mid-80s throughout the season, summer is the perfect time to go whitewater rafting as well as swimming. Scenic float trips are also great in the summer since you can catch cool breezes along the Snake River to keep you comfortable while you check out all of the wildlife and sights!
  • Fall tends to be a little chillier but many locals will say that it’s their favorite time of year to go on Snake River floats Jackson Hole. There is beautiful weather as well as far fewer visitors which makes for a relaxingly quiet scenic float trip, but whitewater rafting is also still an option up until October. Floating between the months of September and October also allows you to view the amazing autumn colors of the Teton National Forest right from your raft!

What to Wear on Jackson Hole Float Trips

When choosing what to wear on a Jackson Hole Float Trip, you need to consider what type of Teton float trip you will be going on.

Jackson Hole scenic float trips will be much calmer and way less wet since you will be in a secure raft on calm waters the entire time. Whereas if you were to go on a white water rafting float trip you would want to dress accordingly and be prepared to get wet during the entirety of the rafting trip.

  • Sun Protection

While floating the Grand Teton Snake River, there is little to no protection from the sun. Even if you happen to experience a cloudy day during your tour, you can get a sunburn in as little as a couple of hours while on the Grand Tetons Snake River. That being said, you should apply sunscreen before the tour and reapply sunscreen during the tour in addition to wearing sunglasses.

  • Appropriate Shoes

Whether you plan on getting in the water or not, you will still need to wear the appropriate footwear to float Snake River. Water shoes or old tennis shoes with soft soles are the best options for both scenic float trips and whitewater rafting. Pretty much all outfitters will not allow bare feet, flip flops, or Crocs!

  • Weather Appropriate Clothes

If you are going on a scenic float trip on the Snake River, then you can pretty much wear whatever you are comfortable in for the weather that day since you likely won’t be getting wet. It is recommended that you wear some layers regardless of the season that you go floating in because even during the summer the mornings can tend to be chilly.

If you plan on going on a whitewater rafting tour or know that you will get wet or go swimming on your tour, you should wear a swimsuit or quick-drying clothes. Avoid cotton, but still consider layers due to the possibility of a chilly morning or a breezy day.

Float Trip Jackson Hole Tips

  • Bring a camera

  • Plan an early morning float

Going on float trips Grand Teton in the early hours of the day will greatly increase your chance of seeing the region’s amazing wildlife, especially birds.

  • Bring snacks and water

When you float Snake River Jackson Hole, you will probably get hungry and need to refuel especially if your particular tour doesn’t provide lunch. Bring things like granola bars, fruit, and water bottles.

  • Book tours in advance

Most tours will have limited seating and will in turn have to regularly turn people away when they’re booked. You will want to book your tour as soon as you know your plans especially if you happen to have a large party.

  • Bring a bag with a change of clothes/towels

If you know that you’ll get wet during your float trip Tetons, you should pack a bag with a comfy change of clothes and a towel to use to dry off at the end of the float trip.
