Gibbs Gardens-Japanese Garden

Atlanta history center - goizueta gardens, atlanta beltline, outstanding gardens of atlanta, georgia.

Garden Design's self-guided day trip to Atlanta, Georgia.

Written and produced by Karen Chapman as recommended by local garden expert Helen Lawson

Mention Georgia and you’re likely to imagine juicy, sun-ripened peaches, so it’s no surprise that more than 70 roads in Atlanta include the word “Peachtree” in their name. Atlanta is also known as the birthplace for the civil rights movement in America. The Capitol Dome, gilded in pure gold, has become as much of a tourist attraction as Centennial Olympic Park, the centerpiece of Atlanta’s Olympic legacy.

Yet, local garden expert Helen Lawson also encourages you to seek out some of the many public gardens around the city and suggests you begin your day at Gibbs Gardens. Founder Jim Gibbs spent six years searching for this site in order to realize his garden dreams. While one could easily spend several hours exploring the many gardens here, Helen suggests focusing on the Japanese Garden. It's one of her favorite spots, where every turn in the path offers another beautiful vignette.

From there, you will drive to the Buckhead neighborhood and visit the Atlanta History Center where several unique garden experiences await. These include the Quarry Garden, created from an abandoned rock quarry, with its naturalized plantings that offer refuge for plants and wildlife. You will find plant collections native to pre-settlement Georgia, many of which are rare and/or endangered.

Finally, take a walk along Atlanta’s BeltLine, a quirky, multi-use trail through the center of the city, which Helen describes as an urban prairie and linear arboretum.

garden tours atlanta

1. Gibbs Gardens - Japanese Garden

At over 200 acres in size, Gibbs Gardens is one of the nation’s largest residential estate gardens so be sure to wear comfortable walking shoes for this visit. If you prefer not to walk there is a tram service that runs frequently in dry weather, but call ahead if heavy rains threaten, as neither wheelchairs nor the tram are permitted to use the paths in muddy conditions.

Gibbs Gardens is composed of two main areas, the Manor House Gardens and the Valley Gardens, each containing distinct garden spaces. A meandering stream flows through the center of the valley, intersected by hundreds of springs and pools, a perfect environment for the naturalized ferns that thrive there, as well as providing an idyllic setting for both the Waterlily Gardens and the Japanese Gardens.

Helen suggests that you beat the crowds and plan to arrive early in the day, then head straight to the Japanese Garden, one of her favorite areas. “This is so well designed,” reflects Helen, who appreciates that every angle offers a perfectly framed view. Here the tranquil atmosphere invites you to slowly stroll through the texture-rich plantings where foliage is truly celebrated. Take time to enjoy the reflections, the carefully sited stone lanterns, and the artistically pruned conifers. “It’s simply gorgeous.”

Before you leave, be sure to visit the gift shop which offers a thoughtfully curated selection of souvenirs and gifts.

Allow 1 hour or more.

2. Atlanta History Center - Goizueta Gardens

Explore the highlights of Southeastern horticultural history by visiting Goizueta Gardens at the Atlanta History Center. This 33-acre public garden features historic homes framed by period gardens, preserved native woodland, and a variety of ornamental and native plant gardens with exciting, new enhancements planned for 2020.

Helen especially likes the Quarry Garden which she says has an enclave feel about it. This former granite quarry is now a sanctuary for native plants and the wildlife that depends on them. For contrast, visit the formal Swan House Gardens, designed to showcase the opulent residence. Visitors can then stroll the recently opened 350-foot-long, Swan Woods Boardwalk, which gently ascends from its start inside the Swan House gate through Swan Woods (a preserved tract of native forest) and up to Wood Cabin.

If time allows, the new Olguita’s Garden offers fragrance and flowers in a peaceful setting or the Smith Family Farm demonstrates gardening practices used in the 1860s. Be sure to visit the chickens and sheep!

Garden and design scholars may also appreciate the Cherokee Garden Library which is next door, while the recently expanded museum has wonderful historical exhibits.

Allow 1.5 hours or more.

3. Atlanta BeltLine

Created from an abandoned railway that used to encircle Atlanta, the BeltLine is now a 22-mile loop of multi-use trails that has revitalized the city, similar in part to the High Line in New York. This linear path runs through the center of Atlanta and is punctuated by breweries and eateries, including the Ponce City Market . Helen suggests you begin your visit at the market, as there is ample parking and it’s also a good spot for lunch.

Rather than a traditional park, the BeltLine is more of an urban prairie and linear arboretum. “It’s fun and quirky,” laughs Helen, pointing out that the BeltLine eventually lines up with Piedmont Park , adjacent to the Atlanta Botanical Garden . It passes through historic areas, tunnels, and runs alongside waterways, the changing scenery adding to the experience.

The Historic Druid Hills Home & Garden Tour is back and better than ever!

Our unique neighborhood, designed by famed landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted, was almost erased by the construction of a highway. Instead, the community fought fiercely to preserve and protect Druid Hills.

Even as it has evolved with the needs of today’s world, we are grateful that the spirit and soul of Olmsted’s original vision for our neighborhood are still thriving. This year’s Tour showcases 10 stunning examples of true Druid Hills stewardship, through clever adaptive reuse of original estate homes, meticulous restoration, and thoughtful realization of our neighborhood’s historic preservation guidelines in new construction.

We can’t wait to open the doors and garden gates for you!

Spring Garden Tours Atlanta 2023

February 28, 2023 By Lucy Mercer Leave a Comment

Garden inspiration abounds in spring. You just need to know where to look for it.

Generous homeowners and gardeners open their garden gates in spring and let enthusiastic plant nerds like me walk around and take a bazillion pix. It’s a great time to be inspired, to be out in nature, and to talk with gardeners.

I’ve compiled a list of Atlanta area spring garden tours. A few are straight from Google, along with my favorites (Cobb MG, Penny McHenry HydrangeaFest).

And remember my top tips for Garden Tours:

  • Best light for photos is early morning. Start on time if you want the best pics.
  • Stay hydrated. Pack a cooler with bottled water if you’re traveling with fellow garden tourists.
  • Wear your comfiest shoes. You’ll do a lot of walking.
  • Stay in designated areas and on marked paths.
  • Thank the volunteers and the hosts.
  • Pack your patience. We’re all here to enjoy gardens.

Phoenix Flies March 3–25 In a city that usually paves over landmarks, the Atlanta Preservation Center has championed historic homes and storied neighborhoods since 1979. For the past 15 years, the nonprofit has hosted oodles of free events across the city during this festival—from neighborhood tours to explorations of cultural institutions like the Atlanta Ballet. atlantapreservationcenter.com

American Craft Show March 16–18 For nearly three decades, the 76-year-old Minneapolis-based American Craft Council has celebrated makers of furniture, fashion, decor, and jewelry in Atlanta, now spotlighting their work at the Cobb Galleria Centre. Meet the next big designer at Hip Pop shows, try crafting at Let’s Make stations, or learn how to make a fashion statement at the Style Slam catwalk. craftcouncil.org

Atlanta Home Show March 23–25 Reimagine an entire house from roof to deck at the largest home show in the state, now in its 40th year. Stop by Cobb Galleria for inspiration, tips, and price shopping from more than 350 vendors. Don’t miss Marietta’s Red Hare Brewing Company’s beer garden, where attendees can gain backyard inspiration as they sip local brews and chat with vendors. atlantahomeshow.com

Tour of Kitchens March 24–25 Discover the latest trends in kitchen design on this self-guided tour benefiting the Junior League of Atlanta. Prominent kitchen designers show off their work with cooking demos from notable Atlanta chefs throughout the weekend. jlatlanta.org

Atlanta Dogwood Festival April 13–15 Spring kicks off with this festival—now in its 82nd year—when the dogwoods start budding in Piedmont Park. Art booths abound, and the juried fair shows more than 250 pieces by painters, ceramicists, sculptors, and jewelers. Watch Fido catch a Frisbee at the Disc Dog Competition, or run a 5K for a mimosa at the finish line. dogwood.org

Inman Park Festival April 28–29 The crown jewel of this annual fete is the tour of homes. Stroll tree-lined streets touring eight abodes, from turn-of-the-century Queen Annes to modern lofts, which highlight just how much Atlanta’s first streetcar suburb has changed. The longstanding festival always includes a parade, artists market, and live music. inmanparkfestival.org

Imaginary Worlds May 5 Phoenixes, wooly mammoths, and mermaids come to the Atlanta Botanical Garden for the return of this popular topiary exhibit. The International Mosaiculture of Montreal builds the creatures out of steel, and the garden fills them with bright sphagnum moss (there will be a few for the Gainesville garden, too). Also don’t miss the ABG fundraiser Gardens for Connoisseurs Tour (May 12–13) at a dozen private residences around town. Open through October 28. atlantabg.org

Cobb Gardeners Tour May 12 Explore six private Cobb County gardens on this outdoor tour. At each stop, learn tips and tricks on how to create a healthy, blooming garden from onsite master gardeners.  cobbmastergardeners.com

The self-guided tour is an opportunity to find inspiration for ways to add biodiversity to your own yard or patio as you wander through beautiful habitats created to support pollinators and other animals. Come see bees, butterflies, and birds feasting on nectar and berries. The gardens are private properties that have been certified GNPS Native Plant Habitats. The gardens can be visited in any order and the onsite tour is self-guided. At each property, GNPS volunteers will be available to answer questions.

Invite your friends and neighbors! Tickets are limited and may sell out so get your tickets early.  Children under 12 and volunteers attend for free.

The tour takes place rain or shine.

The five gardens are described below:

Native garden 1.

In just over 10 years, this quarter-acre  Morningside  property has been converted from a traditional “lawn-with foundation plantings” type of residential landscape, to a planned habitat with close to 200 species of native plants. It is a pesticide free and remarkably productive food forest (for humans and wildlife) and a place to enjoy close encounters with dozens of species of insects, birds, small mammals and reptiles.

Native Garden 2

This  Morningside  homeowner started gardening with native plants in 2017 after hearing an inspiring talk by Doug Tallamy. She has been especially interested in the keystone native plants that host the most caterpillars which in turn feed baby birds. She started her garden with the top keystone natives: Oak, willow, cherry/plum, goldenrod, asters, and sunflowers and then just kept adding native nectar plants. September should be an ideal time to see butterflies.

Native Garden 3

garden tours atlanta

This garden is a special narrow, long yard in  Virginia-Highland  with a high diversity of native plants that provide year-round food and shelter for birds, insects, small mammals, and other wildlife. Berry-producing shrubs, vines, and trees, sheltering evergreens, small prairie pockets filled with pollinator plants, mature canopy trees, a fern-filled seepage, and partly shady woodland edges combine with brush and stone piles, logs, and water sources to provide a diverse wildlife habitat.

Native Garden 4

At this amazing deeply sloped property in  Decatur , the owner used a profusion of native shrubs and grasses to replace a non-native landscape over six years. An overgrown backyard was removed in favor of natives. A lovely array of Solidago and little Bluestem Grass greets the visitor in the front yard; Inkberry, Florida Anise, and Muhly Grass highlight the back.

Native Garden 5

garden tours atlanta

To support wildlife, this half-acre wooded property in  Avondale Estates  required several years of invasive plant removal, and replanting with an understory of native shrubs, small trees, ferns and pollinator plants. This ongoing restoration project shows how an owner-designed and maintained native plant garden can be achieved.
