The Two New Golf Video Games Are Awesome, But One Is the Clear Winner

  • Author: Nick Menta

It’s been nearly a month since EA Sports PGA Tour made its long-awaited return during Masters week on April 7. That means gamers have had ample time to compare and contrast EA’s newest offering with the series that rose up in its eight-year absence: PGA Tour 2K . Having spent the last few weeks bouncing back and forth between both titles, I’m excited to offer this look at how EA Sports PGA Tour and PGA Tour 2K23 stack up.

EA’s producers and marketers spent considerable time hyping their game’s visual fidelity — and they delivered. As you’d justifiably expect from a brand-new, next-gen title that took nearly four years to develop, PGA Tour is far and away the best looking golf sim that’s ever been brought to market. Thanks to EA’s Frostbite engine, LIDAR scans, drone flyovers, Augusta National agronomic data, and old-fashioned conversations with course superintendents, the game’s more than 30 venues provide a genuine sense of place. Because each course has been engineered to play in a slightly different way — with St. Andrews sporting 100-yard rollouts and Harbour Town offering the chance to flag approach shots on spongy bermuda greens — each course has its own identity. These features shine through thanks to the game’s array of shot types, making a round at Bandon Dunes a markedly different experience than one at TPC Sawgrass.

Right now, 2K23 doesn't compete when it comes to how these courses look side by side.

It’s true that 2K’s real strength is in its vast library of user-generated courses, but that’s a credit to the users themselves. Judging studio against studio, the same officially licensed courses present in both games look nothing alike.

Winner: EA Sports PGA Tour

I’ve been playing golf video games dating back to Tiger Woods ’99 , and EA Sports PGA Tour is the first golf sim to ever make me think my way through a round.

PGA Tour features 20 different shot types, allowing players to chart their own way around a given track and to employ some creativity in the process. For years, golf sims have featured standard shots — drive, approach, pitch, chip, putt, usually a flop, maybe a punch — and most every shot in most every round has felt more or less the same. But PGA Tour finally makes a virtual round of golf feel like a real round of golf.

During one of my first rounds at Augusta National, my ball settled over the back of the green at the par-3 4th and I found myself actually thinking through the different ways to save par. Rather than aiming straight at the pin and employing as much spin as possible — as I would in any other golf game I’ve ever played — I opted to aim left, check a low runner into the slope, trundle the ball over the fringe, and watch it work its way sideways toward the hole. As nerdy and granular as this sounds, it’s revolutionary for a golf game and a massive step forward in terms of what it means to be a sim. That, and scorching a 290-yard stinger with a 2-iron is just plain fun.

If there’s a drawback, it’s that PGA Tour isn’t challenging enough. You can win a major in career mode on the hardest settings, with the AI scoring turned all the way up, well before you ever max out your player’s stats and abilities. In part, this is because you’re never really going to hit the ball very far offline. Odd as it sounds, PGA Tour is really a game about shot selection and course management; the execution is a little too baked in.

While 2K23 is a more straightforward experience with fewer options and less in the way of creativity, it will allow you to blow the ball off the planet with a poor swing. The perfect golf video game would likely be found in pairing EA’s shot types with 2K’s swing stick.

Short of that ever coming to pass, EA would benefit from making its own swing mechanic more sensitive and more subject to operator error. Considering PGA Tour ’s arcade mode still features the old-school, button-mashing mechanics players will remember from the Tiger games, it makes sense to greatly dial up the difficultly on the harder levels for those interested in an elite sim experience. Introducing wider misses, more scrambling, and more in the way of risk would make PGA Tour’s already significant gameplay advances even more meaningful.

Online Play

PGA Tour features daily, weekly and seasonal tournaments on varying difficulties from Arcade to Pro to Tour, giving players a range of competitive experiences. Then there’s head-to-head matchups and social outings, which support live play from up 16 users at once. You can actually see other players on the course and watch their shots in real time. This was a feature in EA’s Rory McIlroy title in 2015, and it returns eight years later, while 2K23 ’s ranked matchmaking mode still features just one player and one shot at a time.

That said, EA doesn’t offer anything in the way of 2K’s “Online Societies,” which allow groups of users, large or small, to run their own tournaments. You could set up a quick tournament or a short season with a few of your friends, or you could join TGCTours , an online hub for thousands of 2K users that organizes 18 weekly events, organized by settings and skill level. The site features daily leaderboards, a promotion and relegation system, and its own world ranking.

As it stands, EA’s initial online tournament experience is a little too detached. You play on your own, you post a score, and you earn some rewards; but it never really feels like you’re part of an event, playing against other users. In addition to giving users the opportunity to organize their own events, EA would be wise to consider recreating a TGC Tours-like experience on its own servers — grouping the wider community of players by flights. EA will never be able to offer the sheer quantity and variety of courses available available in 2K, but an online career arc would give players something to work toward and a reason to keep playing week after week.

Winner:  PGA Tour 2K23

Course Offerings

Those of your who have read these columns in the past know about my affinity for 2K’s custom course designer. The 2K series was born out of a niche game originally called “The Golf Club,” built solely around golf-course design. Over time, that game evolved, secured the PGA Tour license, changed its name, and eventually put Tiger Woods on the cover.

While 2K has gotten bigger and better over time as a golf sim, the course designer is still the primary reason to pick up this game and to keep playing. Individual users have produced a staggering number of real-world recreations and original designs.

Having spent a month with both games, I feel comfortable telling you — if you’re looking for a PGA Tour sim — to go play PGA Tour over 2K23 . And if you’re only comparing what the studios themselves have produced on a course-by-course basis, EA comes out ahead, thanks to superior graphics and gameplay.

But if you’re looking to play Pine Valley or Cypress Point or Royal County Down or whatever course you can think of — you’ll be shocked at what you can find on the game’s servers — you’ll still want 2K23 .

Winner: PGA Tour 2K23

Product roadmaps and future releases

Both PGA Tour and 2K23 release periodic updates with new courses, features and fixes.

2K23 recently added Payne’s Valley and Spyglass Hill to its official stable of courses and will soon debut Pinehurst No. 2.

PGA Tour , meanwhile, will roll out the year’s three remaining major venues — the PGA Championship at Oak Hill, the U.S. Open at Los Angeles Country Club (North), and The Open Championship at Royal Liverpool — in addition to Olympia Fields (North), site of the 2023 BMW Championship, and Marco Simone, home to 2023 Ryder Cup . The producers are also currently working a Ryder Cup gameplay experience, but they are tight-lipped on details.

As for what comes next? 2K has been working on a two-year product cycle, which would theoretically point to a potential PGA Tour 2K25 . EA’s producers, separately, took four years to get to this point and are not yet committing to a future timetable. For now, they’ll be updating this version of the game based on gameplay data and player feedback.

Big Picture

EA Sports PGA Tour has set a new bar for graphics and gameplay. The question is whether the game is deep enough and challenging enough to keep players around after they’ve bested career mode and maxed out their golfer’s RPG progression. My above suggestions related to EA creating its own online career arc and dialing up the difficulty would go a long way to extending this game’s ongoing replay value.

As for PGA Tour 2K, what was the only PGA Tour sim on the market now feels like its been lapped in relatively short order. Sooner or later, the graphics engine is going to need a serious upgrade to even approach what EA is offering.

More to the point, the HB studios team would be well served to focus on what it really means to be a golf sim. Too much of the ongoing development of this game is related to features that either alienate the game's most ardent fans - consumable golf balls - or don’t add gameplay value . Relationships with influencers  may be good for marketing and social media presence, but this doesn't matter much for the players at home who already own the game. Too often with PGA Tour 2K , it feels like the users are creating the content and value.

Hopefully, with EA back in the market and two Tour titles available, each studio will push the other to up its game.

EA Sports PGA Tour Review - Hit The Links

  • First Released Apr 4, 2023 released

EA returns to the world of golf with a challenging and rewarding title that's let down by a couple of inconsistencies and an underwhelming swing mechanic.

By Richard Wakeling on April 12, 2023 at 10:55AM PDT

EA Sports PGA Tour is unlike any other golf game I've played. It still features familiar elements from the series' past--back when Tiger Woods was front and center--such as slow-motion heartbeat moments and climactic power shots. But after an eight-year hiatus from the world of golf simulation, EA has returned to the fairway with a more demanding recreation of the sport that's as much about feel as it is mastering the game's robust mechanics. With 30 courses covering all four majors--including The Masters at Augusta National--EA Sports PGA Tour has a plethora of golfing action to sink your teeth into. It's just a shame there are a few notable issues in critical areas that hold it back from greatness.

The first of these is the game's swing mechanic. If you've played a golf game before, the actual act of swinging a driver or 5-iron will be familiar. You pull down on the analog stick to bring the club back, then push forward again to unleash your shot. This has been a staple in golf games for a number of years now, and there aren't any alternatives at the moment--not until a three-click system is implemented in a later update. The issue with EA Sports PGA Tour is that there's a slight delay between your input and the on-screen visual. Your swing isn't 1:1, so there's an uneasy disconnect where you never quite feel like you're in total control. The general malaise of each swing doesn't help matters either, with the slow, clunky pacing and frustrating lag making it difficult to nail the timing and power of each shot. I eventually grew accustomed to these idiosyncrasies over time, but it never feels quite right and fails to capture the satisfaction that hitting a 300-yard tee shot should achieve.

To compound the issue, EA Sports PGA Tour also lacks any sort of meaningful tutorial. There are tooltips that pop up and cover the basics the first time you play, but these brief snippets barely scratch the surface of everything going on under the hood. Instead, the game has a suite of challenges that happen to include a Coaching Academy. This is the best place to start, even if these challenges still neglect to offer any tips or feedback to help you along the way. What you get is a variety of contextual situations covering different aspects of the sport, from putting downhill to dealing with elevation changes and the multitude of shot types on offer. There's a lot of trial and error involved, but the repetition of replaying each situation does give you a greater understanding of how everything works. It's not a very user-friendly approach, but it sets expectations and is genuinely helpful in an unconventional way, even if it might prove frustrating for some. Plus, completing these challenges also earns you XP that can be used to improve your created character.

EA Sports PGA Tour

EA Sports PGA Tour's career mode sits front and center, starting off with your no-name golfer competing in the qualifying school before moving on to the amateur Korn Ferry Tour. The ultimate goal is to reach the PGA Tour, which can be done either by winning one of the many four-round courses or by placing highly enough in the Korn Ferry rankings come season's end. You can expedite this process by opting for a quick play mode where you only need to play a few holes rather than an entire round, but I think playing full rounds is the way to go. That's mostly because it gives you ample time to fine-tune your skills, learn the courses, and gain a better understanding of the game's mechanics. There's also a palpable sense of progression that comes from leveling up your golfer. Earning XP lets you build your skills in driving, approach play, short game, and putting, while progressing each attribute also unlocks more shot types, giving you additional options when preparing to send the ball careening toward the green.

Fortunately, the Coaching Academy includes challenges for each of the game's myriad shot types, giving you the opportunity to see how each one functions before playing competitively. There's value in understanding the differences between a runner, spinner, or knock-down shot, but knowing when to utilize each one essentially comes down to a matter of feel. In this respect, EA Sports PGA Tour resembles the sport of golf more accurately than any other game. There are a number of variables at play for every single shot, to the point where there's a real thought process behind each swing. You have to choose the right shot type and club for each situation, adjust for wind and elevation, judge how much power you need to put into the swing, and account for the distinct ways each course plays--tweaking your shot shape depending on the shape of the fairway and lie of the bunkers. The game helps to some degree by displaying relevant information such as wind speed and distance, but then you're left to your own devices. This can be frustrating, particularly early on when you're still learning the ropes and your golfer's attributes aren't up to snuff, but once everything clicks, EA Sports PGA Tour plays an engrossing game of golf that can be incredibly rewarding.

Much of this is down to the courses themselves. Every single one of the 30 officially licensed courses is staggeringly beautiful and offers an authentic attention to detail, whether it's Liberty National and its view of the Manhattan skyline, the waves crashing against the sand at Pebble Beach, or the alligators lurking in the water at TPC Sawgrass. Almost every course is iconic on some level, and they've all been faithfully rendered and recreated, right down to individual blades of grass. The absence of a course designer is a tad disappointing, but unlike PGA Tour 2K23, it's not something that feels like a necessity because there are already so many 18-hole delights. The courses are the game's main character, providing the kind of variety and depth to stave off any tedium. Mastering a golf game's mechanics is usually the key to success, but EA Sports PGA Tour's courses demand much more from you. Each one plays differently, whether it's the roll of the green or the width of the fairway impacting your decision-making. It genuinely feels like you're playing against the course rather than the shot meter.

EA Sports PGA Tour

The physics model, which is built around the official TrackMan data for ball tracking and swing analysis, is excellent for the most part. However, there are some inconsistencies when it comes to ball rollout. On The Old Course at St Andrews, for instance, the rollout is overly extreme to the point where the ball will roll uphill at pace, even through heavy rough. This forces you to account for situations that shouldn't really occur. Once you land on the green, putting is also equally aggravating for different reasons. Each green contains a grid that uses moving beads to show you the direction of the break. The problem is that sometimes this data is inaccurate and the break is opposite to what the beads are showing. The putt reader alleviates this somewhat by showing the ideal path to the hole, but this is also misleading at times. With no reliable way to gauge the breaks, putting is a lesson in irritation that will only be rectified if these issues are fixed in future updates.

Outside of career mode, EA Sports PGA Tour also features various tournament options for use in online matches against the community. If you want to play against friends, however, stroke play is the only option, and there's a disappointing lack of alternating play for those who want to see each other tee off. A range of daily, weekly, and seasonal tournaments give you another chance to earn XP and items like club specs and in-game cash for a limited time before they're refreshed, so there's an incentive to keep coming back. That in-game cash can be spent in a store of rotating items including various cosmetics, which holds some appeal because the character creator is extremely barebones. Outfitting your golfer in branded clothing can be fairly costly, though, which is explained by the inclusion of microtransactions for those who would rather buy the in-game currency with real money. This isn't a surprising move, but it doesn't exactly vibe with the serene mood.

After almost a decade away from the sport, EA's return to the golf course is a promising one. The range of shot types, courses, and tangible variables make for a methodical and tactical game of golf that's both challenging and rewarding. It stumbles by barely introducing players to its robust mechanics, while a laggy swing and inconsistent putting are notable flaws on what is otherwise a fantastic golf sim. EA Sports PGA Tour represents a solid re-entry for the series and lays down a sturdy foundation for an auspicious future.

  • Leave Blank
  • Each shot must be carefully considered, taking into account a number of variables
  • All 30 courses are wonderfully recreated and each one feels distinct
  • Offers a tough but satisfying simulation of golf that's close to the real thing
  • The lack of tutorials makes for a rocky start
  • Swing mechanics are delayed and create a disconnect
  • Putting information is frequently misleading

EA SPORTS™ PGA TOUR™ Patch Notes 12.0

Coming to the ea play list: discover new courses, play as jack nicklaus, and take on the augusta national par 3 course..

On April 2nd, EA SPORTS™ PGA TOUR™ will receive an update that includes a new season, several gameplay improvements, and game-wide bug fixes. Read on to learn about what’s coming next.

Welcome to Season 11!

Season 11 launches as the largest content update to date for EA SPORTS™ PGA TOUR™ with the release of four new courses and the ultimate Major champion of all time, Jack Nicklaus joins as the first playable golfer added since the game's launch. Moreover, starting April 4th, EA Play^ members can enjoy the EA SPORTS™ PGA TOUR™ updates available via the Play List. As with all previous updates, the new courses and Jack Nicklaus are included with no additional purchase required. This now makes a total of 39 playable courses and 23 playable pro golfers.

Included as a 2024 Major Course, Valhalla Golf Course is located in Louisville, Kentucky, a modern, parkland-style course designed by Jack Nicklaus. Characterized by its wide fairways, large, undulating greens, and challenging water hazards, it has been the venue for multiple major championships, including the PGA Championship and the Ryder Cup. Since it hosts the 2024 PGA Championship, Career mode has been updated to have the PGA Championship rotate every season between Valhalla, Oak Hill, and Southern Hills.

Pinehurst No. 2, the second 2024 Major Course to debut, is located in North Carolina and is a world-renowned golf course known for its crowned, undulating greens and strategically placed bunkers. Designed by the legendary Donald Ross, it has hosted more single golf championships, including the U.S. Open Championship and PGA Championship, than any other course in America. It will host the 2024 U.S. Open Championship, so Career mode has been updated to rotate the U.S. Open every season between Pinehurst No. 2, The Los Angeles Country Club, and The Country Club.

The third 2024 Major Course, renowned for its "Postage Stamp" eighth hole, is Royal Troon. Known as a world-class course, with traditional links located on the rugged coast of Scotland. Offering golfers challenging wind conditions, deep bunkers, large putting greens, and undulating fairways, Royal Troon is a frequent stop in the Open Championship rota, including this year. The Open will now rotate in Career mode between Royal Troon, Royal Liverpool, and St Andrews.

Further celebrating the tradition of Masters week, the Augusta National Par 3 Course will also be added to the game. The course is stunningly beautiful and serves as the traditional venue for the Par 3 Contest held annually on the eve of the Masters Tournament.

All four of these incredible courses are now available to play in Quick Play and Private Match and will be featured in Online and Tournament playlist rotations as well. As previous Ryder Cup hosts, Pinehurst No. 2 and Valhalla have also been added to Ryder Cup formats in Quick Play, Online, and Private Match.

Jack Nicklaus, often referred to as “the Golden Bear," is renowned for his powerful drives, precision iron play, and exceptional putting ability, which contributed to his record 18 major championship wins. Nicklaus's six Masters titles add to his legendary status as the greatest Major Champion golfer of all time. When playing as Jack Nicklaus, you’ll notice that he has his own set of golf clubs, four outfits to choose from, and his unique swing animation. Jack Nicklaus is available to play in any format that supports playing with pro golfers.

Season 11 Pro Pass** includes a wide variety of cosmetics in the premium tier including a selection of spring-themed apparel, Jack Nicklaus’ clubs, and one of his outfits. Completing Season 11 Pro Pass will earn you Jack Nicklaus’ '65 Masters Ball Spec in the free tier and the J.LINDEBERG “KV Tour - Azalea” outfit in the premium tier. Throughout the season you’ll earn tokens to level up your Pro Pass by completing live Quests and playing rounds in Online, Tournaments, and Career modes.

Challenges mode has been updated with two new challenge series. The “Drive Chip and Putt” challenges series offers a taste of what it feels like to compete in the famous junior golf competition. The “Jack Nicklaus” challenge series showcases the history of the Golden Bear, featuring some of the best rounds from his Major Championship victories, and a variety of other memorable moments from his legendary career.

Additional Patch Notes

  • Jack Nicklaus’ swing animation has been added to the Store rotation.
  • Added a “Starter Bundle” which includes a set of rare specs and a currency pack.
  • New items added to the store rotation including the TaylorMade Qi10 Driver, Scotty Cameron Circle T putters, and several new apparel items.
  • Increased matchmaking search timeout from 2 to 5 minutes.
  • Updated the “Into Out” swing animation.
  • Fixed the “TaylorMade MySpider - Red” left-handed version of the putter being colored white instead of red.
  • [Kiawah] Moved several shrubs and bunker footprint decals that were incorrectly placed.
  • [Career] Fix to enable changing outfits in Career mode lobbies.
  • [Select Golfer] Updated Patrick Cantlay’s picture.
  • [Store] Updated thumbnail icons for “In to Out” and “Sweep” swing animations.
  • Additional crash and stability-related fixes.

** Pro Pass content requires gameplay to unlock. Requires EA SPORTS PGA Tour (sold separately) and all game updates to play.

^ Conditions, limitations and exclusions apply. See tos.ea.com/legalapp/eaplay/US/en/PC/ for details.
